There's something quite delightful about seeing the skeleton of a prehistoric animal move in a way that it might have moved when the bones were covered in flesh, and the animal was alive. Jack O Conner is a PhD candidate at Monash University, and that's exactly what he's doing at the Evans EvoMorph Lab. In this episode of Palaeo Jam, host Michael Mills chats with Jack about how he came to be doing what he does, explores the process of creating the models, and what it's like to see such creatures brought to life in this way. Such work, of course, fits well into the science communication field for which Michael has built a career, and both Michael and Jack discuss some of the important elements of science communication, and why it matters. You can find Jack's models of Thylacoleo carnifex, Zygomaturus trilobus, Siderops kehli, and Perucetus colossus on Sketchfab at… https://skfb.ly/oPsJs We think it's well worth checking out the models before you listen to the podcast if you can, or even while you're listening to it. Epic Games has a new way to encourage more custom Fortnite islands: promise a steadier stream of cash. The company has launched a Creator Economy 2.0 system that will proportionately hand out 40 percent of net revenue from most real-money purchases to creators, including Epic.
This episode of Object Matters host Dr Craig Barker is joined by Italian renaissance historian Dr Kathleen Olive to discuss Il Spinario, or the ‘Boy with Thorn'. Il Spinario is one of the most famous works of bronze to survive from the Hellenistic-Roman world, a depiction of a young boy contemplating a thorn as he removes it from the sole of his foot. The ‘original' ancient bronze is now in the Palazzo del Conservatori in Rome. The Chau Chak Wing Museum is home to a bronze copy of the Roman statue produced by the Fondere Artistiche Riunite in the early 20th century. Between ancient Rome and 20th century Australia, the statue, and its many copies both ancient and modern, has inspired artists and storytellers. Kathleen and Craig discuss the long history of the bronze statue of the boy and its influence on the Renaissance and modern worlds and why the statue has become so popular. Guest: Dr Kathleen Olive is a popular educator on Italian art, history and culture, and presents on these subjects at the Italian Institute of Culture, Sydney, the Art Gallery of NSW and across Australia as a national lecturer for the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society. For many years, she has led cultural tours to Italy, France, Spain and Japan, and she is an honorary research fellow in the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Sydney. Host: Dr Craig Barker, Head of Public Engagement, Chau Chak Wing Museum and Director, Paphos Theatre Archaeological Excavations. Follow @DrCraig_B on Twitter and Instagram. Object details: Bronze cast of Il Spinario (The Thorn-Puller), produced by the Fondere Artistiche Riunite, Naples, Italy in the early 20th century [NM2008.27] The discussion also covers a photograph in the collection of a copy of Il Spinario in marble in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney photographed by Kerry & Co. between 1890-1915 [HP83.60.119] The image is of its 3D recorded form accessible via Sketchfab.
This episode of Object Matters marks National Archaeology week. Host Dr Craig Barker is joined by Madeline Robinson, Support Officer for the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sydney. In recent years Madeline has overseen a project of recording a number of Chau Chak Wing Museum objects in 3D to be used in digital teaching of undergraduate courses. Photogrammetry is a technique that creates accurate and fully textured 3D models from photographs. It can be used to record both landscapes and objects of all sizes; allowing 3D prints and orthoimages (scaled images without distortion or perspective). Madeline discusses the role of photogrammetry in archaeology and museum contexts, and the role of digital archaeology more generally. Together in depth they discuss how she has recorded one of the museum's numismatic items, a silver coin from Classical Athens and the complexities of recording a small object n 3D through marrying together hundreds of individual photographs and then how that digital recording may be used to allow greater access to the collection. In the discussion they prove that a digital recording of object matters as much as the object itself when it comes to engagement, teaching and research. Together they discuss new ways of seeing old objects, in celebration of National Archaeology Week. Guest: Madeline Robinson is Support Officer for the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sydney. She has considerable archaeological field experience in Australia and abroad and manages the archaeology lab at the university. She also manages the @sydneyarchaeology social media account on Instagram and can be followed on her personal Twitter account @MGP_Robinson. Host: Host: Dr Craig Barker, Head of Public Engagement, Chau Chak Wing Museum and Director, Paphos Theatre Archaeological Excavations. Follow @DrCraig_B on Twitter and Instagram. Object details: Athenian silver tetradrachm, Athens, Greece, 449-404 BC. Obverse: Head of Athena facing right; reverse: owl standing facing right, olive sprig top left and moon to right. Acquired before 2004 [NM2004.655] The image is of its 3D recorded form accessible via Sketchfab.
Buon ascolto!—>
3D Platform CAPTUR3D Adds Sketchfab Integration with Matterport Digital Twins Sketchfab brings 3D people, places, and objects with full-motion animation to enhance the Matterport experience SUNNYVALE, Calif., Thursday, March 3, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Matterport, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTTR), the leading spatial data company driving the digital transformation of the built world, today announced that CAPTUR3D, a Matterport-based digital twin software and management platform, has integrated with Sketchfab, allowing users to import three-dimensional (3D) Sketchfab digital objects into their Matterport digital twins. Sketchfab, which was acquired by Epic Games in 2021, and their community of creators who have published millions of models, is the largest platform for immersive and interactive 3D. Through the integration, Matterport is combining the largest platform for digital twins with the largest platform for 3D models. “By integrating Sketchfab's 3D library, digital twins are not simply recreations of the built world, but instead become new, engaging experiences,” says Steven Kounnas, co-founder and COO of CAPTUR3D. “Whether it's real estate, retail or the public sector, we look forward to seeing the infinite number of ways our users will customize their digital twins.” The process begins with the creation of a Matterport digital twin that is uploaded to the CAPTUR3D platform. Users can then connect their Sketchfab account to link 3D objects they have already purchased or browse Sketchfab's library of more than 750,000 downloadable 3D digital objects for new, free options. From furniture and art to home appliances and 3D avatars, Sketchfab objects placed within a digital twin can be static or animated, viewed from any perspective, adding another layer of depth and interactivity to any Matterport space. Customers can stage an office, visualize how to organize a garage, or create a virtual, collaborative environment within a digital twin and using 3D objects. --- Matterport media release continues in the We Get Around Network Forum (www.WGANForum.com).

Started in France, Alban Denoyel knew that the key to his product, Sketchfab, was its influence in the United States. Now a leading platform for 3D and AR models, Sketchfab got a boost while Alban was part of the Techstars Accelerator program. “I think having gone through Techstars really helped us get the credibility we needed to raise money with VCs as first-time entrepreneurs.”Years later, the key takeaways from Alban's time in the program still bring success to Sketchfab. Investors won't just throw money at an idea; it's about having a rapport, as Alban met some investors two years before they even wrote their checks. “The real key lesson is to build a relationship ahead of when you need some money.”Listen as David and Alban delve deeper into having resilience and perseverance, switching focuses from building to monetizing a product, the struggles the company faced within the AR market and technology not being ready for their product, and how building relationships helped when Sketchfab was acquired by Epic Games.Follow Alban Denoyel on Twitter @albnFollow David Cohen on Twitter @davidcohenListen & subscribe to the Give First podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more. There’s a brand-new sensor in the iPhone 12 Pro, and it’s a big clue about the future of technology. Already just 1 month after iPhone 12 launch, the phone accounts for 5% of new uploads to Sketchfab, the largest global platform for immersive and interactive 3D models. It's much faster, high-quality especially at room-scale, but not the best at small-scale objects. In this episode of TechFirst with John Koetsier, we chat with Alban Denoyal, the CEO of Sketchfab about why. And about the implications of 3D scanning: where it's used, what it can do, and what it's changing in augmented reality, mixed reality, VR, and more.
In episode 8, we share tips and insights on approaching anatomy learning. We discuss the challenges of acquiring the anatomy "vocabulary", the importance of going beyond just memorisation and the need to build up "personal" 3D mental representations of anatomical understanding. We also highlight the myth of 'learning styles' and the risks this belief can present for learners approaching certain topics, such as anatomy. We share the strategies we've found effective for learning anatomy and suggest some helpful go-to resources, include some that may help mitigate potential restrictions to med school anatomical resources (e.g. models, anatomy lab) due to COVID.Don't forget, you can see who the podcast hosts are or send us a message by visiting our Instagram page (give us a follow!) @thehippocampuspodcast and Twitter @hippocampus_podYou can also email us any thoughts or comments on this episode or for future episodes (thehippocampuspodcast@gmail.com)!Recommendations from the episode: all open source (free!)-SketchFab:a fantastic site with searchable and freely available anatomically accurate 3D models. Recorded at Øredev 2019, Fredrik talks to Azad Balabanian about virtual and augmented worlds. Azad works with photogrammetry - a process of capturing environments and objects for, among onther possibilities, use in VR and AR. He also hosts the Research VR podcast and dives deep into all aspects of virtual realities. We start with discussing photogrammetry, how it works and what its challenges currently are for those wanting to get into scanning environments on top of just photographing or filming them. Then we discuss how AR is or is not coming along and how to get a feel for what might be coming - by going to hardware conferences and piecing together what different companies are developing. AR has a lot of promise, but it is still a long way from being something you really could imagine wearing all day. There are promising initial use cases, but we are still looking for real consumer killer apps and hardware. We then gradually move over into VR, games, good experiences and how room space and motion sickness are perhaps not the big problems people imagined at the start. Fredrik gets excited by how close most of us regular computer users may actually be to being able to work in VR. Thank you Cloudnet for sponsoring our VPS! Comments, questions or tips? Tips and Tricks for Creating Interior 360 Models Today's show is about creating interior 360 models. What is the best way of adding interior 360 models to your 3D maps? Ryan from Oklahoma is calling us after watching Paul's video that he did for Randy Travis's house. In this video, Paul did a great job of integrating the interior 360 model with the exterior model. Ryan is wondering about the software and workflow that Paul used to facilitate this smooth and seamless integration. Great question, Ryan. Certainly, many real estate agents would be interested in showcasing a property via a 360-degree interior model. One of the best ways of creating an interior model is by using the Matterport camera and app. What are some tips and tricks for creating an easy-to-use and navigable interior model? And, once you create a Matterport model, how do you integrate it with an exterior model? In today's show, we recommend the best workflow for adding interior 360 models to 3D maps. Moreover, towards the end, we also reveal some cost-effective and equally good options to Matterport. Thanks for the great question, Ryan. Fly Safe! Recently crashed your drone? If YouTube is the world’s compendium of videos of cute cats and unboxings, then the Sketchfab platform is well on its way to becoming the equivalent cultural database of user-generated 3D objects. CEO Alban Denoyel discusses the origins and the future of the service with Alan in this episode. Alan: Welcome to the XR for Business Podcast with your host, Alan Smithson. Today’s guest is Alvin Denyuel– I screwed it up already. How do I say it? Alban: “Deh-Noh-Yell.” Alan: “Denoyel,” OK. Today’s guest is Alban Denoyel from Sketchfab, the world’s largest platform to publish and find 3D content online. Imagine it’s like the YouTube for 3D. Prior to Sketchfab, he worked for four years in the 2D world of photography. He loves making 3D content with photogrammetry or VR sculpting. He’s a graduate from the ESSEC Business School in Paris, France. If you want to learn more about the wonderful work they’re doing, you can visit sketchfab.com. Alban, welcome to the show. Alban: Hey, Alan, thanks. Alan: It’s my absolute pleasure. I’ve been looking forward to this episode for so long. I’ve had a Sketchfab account for about four years now and I’ve only managed to publish a couple of things on there. But it’s so cool. I mean, you’re literally making the YouTube of 3D models. How did you guys come up with that concept? Where did that come from? Alban: Actually, it initially came from a technical challenge, I guess. My– So, Sketchfab is built on top of WebGL, which is the first web-based framework to display 3D graphics in the browser and WebGL was initiated by Mozilla back in 2011. And my co-founder and CTO, Cedric, had been a 3D programmer in the gaming industry for 15 years, was hired by Mozilla to make one of the very first demos of WebGL for the launch of Firefox 4. And then I just started peeking around the tech and started building an MVP to essentially help the people he was working with in the 3D industry to be share and display 3D assets with just a euro and a browser. Alan: Incredible. I mean, you guys have come a long, long way. How long have you been doing that? When did it start? Alban: Cedric started in 2011, I met him early 2012, and we officially launched in March 2012. So it’s been more than seven years. Alan: Wow. Seven years. And how many 3D models are hosted on Sketchfab today? Alban: I stopped counting at three million. [chuckles] Alan: So there’s over three million 3D assets hosted on Sketchfab today. And I would assume over the next 10 years, as everything moves to 3D, that number is going to probably end up at 3 billion, at some point. So why do people need Sketchfab? Alban: So people use this mostly in two ways: either to publish content or to find content. So published content means sharing, embedding, displaying, hosting 3D files that they have. So these are as 3D creators, or brands, or architects, or any number of industries. And so they have 3D files and they need a way to embed them on a web page or share them with someone who doesn’t have 3D software to open them, or use them in VR and AR and so on. And then other people come to Sketchfab just because they need content. Either regards to presentations, or it could be to build video games. It can be to build AR/VR experiences, it can be to make a video or two-dimensional learning. Again, the use cases are pretty diverse as well. Alan: Let’s start with the way– where you guys came from, because up until recently it was a free pla

Alban Denoyel is the CEO of Sketchfab, a 3D hub to publish, share, buy and sell 3D, VR and AR content. We discuss the history of the business and what the company has learned from Youtube and why they are pursuing a distributed content strategy. Alban shares how power creators are using the platform to monetize content, the powerful role 3D plays in cultural heritage, and the importance of figuring out standards and formats in 3D. With Sketchfab crossing 1 billion cumulative page views, Google's Poly turning one, and Microsoft's Remix 3D turning two, it's an interesting moment to reflect where we are in the trajectory of the 3D web.
Over the weekend I spent some time flying over a new house for sale in Chino Valley Arizona. I also photographed the new home, and shot additional interior and exterior video as well. In the end? I just landed a new client that will need me to image over 30+ homes in 2019. Fantastic! Today's episode was inspired by the work I did this weekend. Drones are finding many uses in our economy, and the industry will continue to grow over the next few years. Concerns over privacy invasion are over blown in my opinion. Drone pilots have more of an interest in growing their businesses, and invading people's privacy doesn't create a new revenue stream, it only serves to aggravate the public.
Magic-Leap-Demo: https://vrodo.de/magic-leap-zeigt-lightwear-brille-erstmals-im-detail/ 2018 steht! https://vrodo.de/magic-leap-es-ist-was-es-ist-start-in-2018-bestaetigt/ Apple-Keynote: Alles AR, oder was?
AiA 151: WebVR with Aysegul Yonet The panel for this episode of Adventures in Angular is Alyssa Nicoll, Joe Eames, Lukas Ruebbelke, and Charles Max Wood. Special guest Aysegul Yonet is here to discuss WebVR and visualizations. Tune in to learn more! [00:02:36] Can you really do VR with Angular? Yes. VR is a different kind of API. [00:03:07] Can you give a brief explanation of how Web VR works? Web VR is currently an experimental API. It creates 3D experiences that interact using the gamepad API. Angular and Web VR work together by writing more declarative experiences. [00:04:05] What do you mean by it being experimental? Things are changing quickly. Not all browsers are implemented. It has to be enabled in Chrome, it can be enabled in Firefox, but not all other browsers implement it. A 2.0 Web VR version is being created, which will be similar to the version that is out now. [00:05:05] VR in a Predictable Manner Not enabled in some of the browsers but can check it and leave a message. Once you have an available browser, there is a consistent interaction. [00:06:30] What kind of hardware is required to run the VR experience? VR is now very accessible to everyone because of Web VR. Google Cardboard is one of the cheapest ways. It is around $20. Samsung VR headset is free. Also can purchase cheap hand controls. Developers do not have to go through app stores to release a product, which makes it cheap for them as well. [00:08:30] What are three cases that you see Web VR that could be disruptive? One case is in the education field. Google Expedition is creating an app for teachers to create experiences for students to see different places such as museums. A second case is in the medical world. Web VR can be an amazing pain killer. It has been used in Leukemia patients. For example, kids don’t want to take medication but using VR they can fight the disease itself. A third case is the Smithsonian Museum in DC. Artwork was scanned through VR and 3D experiences created through that. [00:14:35] Where would you recommend we start to try out VR? A-Frame is the easiest to use for beginners. You don’t need to know how to use 3D. It has Angular components. There is also Play, where you can take any experience you want and work off of that. Sketchfab is an app where you can use 3D models. There is also a Google app that takes 360-degree 3D pictures and turns them into experiences. [00:16:44] Would those 3D pictures have sound or just an image? Yes, it does have sound as well. [00:17:52] Does A-Frame have components that you feed data to? It is just like any kind of Angular component. It seems foreign to web developers because you are creating a scene. But A-Frame makes it easy for you: just have to add the objects itself. You have components for a scene. [00:19:14] How do you program the interactions with objects in Angular/Web VR app? Interactions are not the easiest to program. Trying to solve the problem itself. You can take data through the Gamepad API. You can also use Itracking where you look at an object and select it. [00:20:14] How long have you been doing this? Not long - she was “dying to work with WebVR.” She had a chance to work with Play and had fun. [00:21:00] Could I built a desktop app with Electron? Will it work in Chromium? Yes. [00:21:20] Will it work in the embedded Safari or Chrome Views that you get on Android or the iPhone? Not sure. But it can be loaded unto a website and downloaded onto your phone. [00:23:00] Fairly approachable if you have a SmartPhone. MergeVR has a Goggle and Cube. It can create VR experiences for kids. The product is affordable: only $60 for Goggles and the Cube is $20. [00:24:20] How do you test it? Hard to test because it is visual based. There is a Chrome plug-in that helps. The mapping is very mathematical, which is an easy part to test. [00:25:30] Is there anybody in the WebVR space that you admire? A-Frame team has done a great job. The 3JS creator Mr.Doob has been developing for a long time, before the community there is now. Companies have been using his stuff for years. Brandon Jones, who is implementing WebVR on the Chrome team. [00:34:47] How is VR development different from web development? Other than the interaction, writing the code isn’t all that different. The tool used was created for websites with 3D capabilities. Usability is different. There is an adjustment curve with VR: people navigate VR with a mouse better than with a headset. Mais j'aimais trop Age of Empires. Eddie Gonzalez is passionate about getting students to create using Virtual Reality (VR), rather than just consume VR. He’s currently a teacher, teaching primarily 6th-grade students language arts and history. He’s also taught various other grades and subjects. The one common thread in each of his classes is that Eddie always includes VR in his teaching. “In each of those classes, I always incorporate 3D models, just in different ways.” Eddie’s noticed something about kids through all his work with them and his work with Virtual Reality in EDU. He’s seen that for kids “regardless of their ancestral cultures...their culture is technology.” Read more at www.TeachInVR.com
