In this episode of Walk Talk Listen, saxophonist, composer, and community builder Chelsea Baratz takes us on a deeply personal journey through music, mentorship, and meaning. Raised in the soulful, hard-bop heart of Pittsburgh and sharpened in the creative fire of New York City, Chelsea reflects on formative moments—from her first jam session at the Crawford Grill to the life-changing mentorship of Sean Jones and Roy Hargrove. We explore how her upbringing, identity, and powerful experiences shaped both her artistry and her ongoing recovery from COVID related challenges. Chelsea also shares her role in boundary-pushing projects like the all-female HERA Collective and The Empress, her recent top-charting saxophone quartet. As she discusses the Sustainable and Inner Development Goals, Chelsea makes a compelling case for art as a form of activism and connection. From invoking the Akashic Field to advocating for communal care and restorative justice, Chelsea's voice rings clear: music is not only her sanctuary—it's her way of making the world better, one note at a time. Nick leads us off this week with two articles meant to start a conversation about our emotional relationship with music. A recent study shows that age has no affect on our ability to remember melodic themes. Another article summarizes an interview that Forbes did with Kesha about her need to create music to process her emotions. This time on Wong Notes, guitar legend Kurt Rosenwinkel joins Cory Wong to go deep on all things jazz. The genre has always been a haven for free-thinkers and adventurers, so it's a little surprising when Rosenwinkel reveals that he's incorporated a Fractal FM9 into his live rig—though it's still working in tandem with a good ol' Fender tube amp.Rosenwinkel divulges the details on his “softer, darker” attack, which combined with his approach to tone—including a fair bit of top-end roll-off—constitutes a big piece of his signature sound. Rosenwinkel's forthcoming live record, The Next Step Band (Live at Smalls 1996), captures this sound in the place that formed it: New York City. Rosenwinkel takes Wong back to the halcyon days of the city's kinetic 1990s “hardcore” bebop and free-jazz scene, where Mitch Borden's legendary Smalls Jazz Club was an artistic hotbed (and crash pad) for players of all stripes.Nowadays, more and more artists are forming their connections online rather in a jazz club. But can TikTok and Instagram replace an all-night jazz joint for up-and-coming players?Tune in, and be sure to check out Kurt's career-spanning new Ultimate Book of Compositions.Listen to the full episode here: https://bit.ly/WongNotesGet 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Kurt Rosenwinkel: https://kurtrosenwinkel.com/Hit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/wongnotespodProduced by Jason Shadrick and Cory WongAdditional Editing by Shawn PersingerPresented by DistroKid

Sam Smith is a composer, arranger, and sought-after bassist based in Boston, MA. He has gained such an insight on the bass that the AuburnPub said that "watching Smith play, the line between bassist and bass blurs." The young bassist looks to always improve himself as an individual musician, as well as with the music that is brought to him by other artists. Smith constantly plays local in the Greater Boston area, and has brought his expertise around the world from the USA to China, The Netherlands, France, and the UK, playing as a sideman and bandleader for many musical projects. The bassist has played at esteemed venues such as Dizzy's Club, Wally's Cafe Jazz Club, and Smalls Jazz Club and has played and/or recorded with the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Ron Blake, Stefon Harris, Joe Magnarelli, Jesus Molina, Aaron Parks, and Terri Lyne Carrington. Superb Alto Saxophonist Christopher McBride has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts. Now Christopher is gaining respect amongst fans, critics, and his peers as one of the most versatile saxophonists in the world. His 2012 debut album Quatuor de Force certainly establishes his ability to front a group and write his own soulful, melodically indelible tunes. Applauded for his ability to play in all musical situations, McBride has the ability to unleash a fiery attack and serrated tone, but on his recent album he explores a more measured, mellow sound heavily influenced by contemporary R&B—with a strong shot of Cannonball Adderley's post-bop sensuality–but his improvising is very rigorous and cogent. Starting his professional career in Chicago in 2007, Christopher has been in high demand around the world as a musician, composer, arranger, and educator. In addition, since moving to New York in 2013 his group The Whole Proof has played venues all over New York such as Smalls Jazz Club, Smoke Jazz Club, Ginny's Supper Club & Fat Cat. The musicians he has performed for stretches over many genres with artists such as Billy Preston, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Broom, Percy Gray, Roy Hargrove, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Guy Sebastian, Solange, Ne-Yo, Jennifer Hudson, Alice Smith, Brandon Flowers, Lea DeLaria, 88 Keys, Milton Mustafa, Winard Harper, and the Marquis Hill Blacktet. He now currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. In this episode, Christopher shares his background, education, and musical journey. Fourth generation Chicagoan and critically lauded vocalist Kimberly Gordon is sought after by the elite jazz listener. Kimberly's grandfather was a dancer at the historic Chêz Pareé nightclub and her Nana was a camera girl there, a position aquired by childhood friend and mobster Sam Giancana. These stories and personal ties to Chicago nightclub history laid the foundation for Kimberly's love of early 20th century music. With a deep understanding of the American Songbook it has led her on a path that celebrates composers, lyricists, and jazz masters alike. In New York City, Kimberly was the first woman to hold a Saturday night residency at the now historic Smalls Jazz Club in Manhattan. Kimberly's years in N.Y.C allowed her to perform with jazz greats such as Roy Hargrove, Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and John Hicks, just to name a handful. Kimberly's sound reflects the old school style of delivering standards, deeply rooted in the ways of the masters, always true to the melody as written; this separates her from the rest. When she is not touring Europe or hiding from a pandemic you can find Kimberly at Winter's Jazz Club in Chicago, weaving her way through the American songbook with long time pianist/organist Chris Foreman. Look for Kimberly in Greece soon as she will be relocating there in 2024From Hawai'i to Paris Kimberly is the singer's singer, the musician's singer, and the jazz lover's singer....Kimberly Gordon Organ TrioGreen Mill Lounge:https://youtu.be/GWjtCNDGO6UKimberly Gordon, Paris, Sunset Sunside, February, 2018:Squeeze Me:https://youtu.be/QaZn44wixgUKimberly Gordon Big Band/Big Band Boom!:Do Nothin til You Hear From Me, http://bit.ly/14gDx3mKimberly Gordon Duo:That's Allhttps://youtu.be/WSimtx2502QKimberly Gordon Organ Trio, "Sunday", Sirens Records:https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sunday-feat.-chris-foreman/id458443950Kimberly Gordon Trio, "Melancholy Serenade",Sirens Records https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/melancholy-serenade/id65599728Live on WDCB Radio “Churchill” CD tour 2017:https://youtu.be/wmlbhisUwNYMore Than You Know,https://youtu.be/fOcki66P-JEFollow on Instagram:Instagram.com/kimberlygordonvocalsInstagram.com/thejazzfoodieInstagram.com/kimigphotoSupport the show

Only 29 years old, Mr. Barber has already worked with artists such as Pat Metheny, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Kenny Barron, Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Greene, J.D. Allen, Harold Mabern, Larry Willis, Steve Davis, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Erykah Badu. Now, he’s stepping out in full force as a bandleader. DownBeat magazine calls Vision Ahead’s self-titled debut album Barber’s “greatest accomplishment to date,” but make no mistake, this group is more than the Jonathan Barber Quintet; this is unmistakably “Vision Ahead,” a distinctive and close-knit group of musicians who have been working toward this moment for years. Featuring Godwin Louis on saxophone, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Matt Dwonszyk on bass, and Taber Gable on piano, Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Even when they’re playing hard—and they do reach some thrilling crescendos—this extremely dynamic band always feels impeccably sharp and in control, cool far beyond their years. Barber also shows quite a gift for pacing in his new compositions, with each song boasting a real sense of progression that’s balanced with a proper spotlight on his bandmates’ noteworthy improvisations. Barber is the main composer but each member of the band contributes compositions and arrangements. With strong melodic motifs and almost every extended solo accompanied by new forms or themes, Barber’s music strikes the rare balance of maintaining a clear emotional through-line while still providing each soloist a fresh foundation on which to build. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead has performed at The Jazz Standard, BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Scullers Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Rockwood Music Hall, Smoke Jazz Club, The Cell, Minton’s Playhouse, Black Eyed Sally’s, The Side Door and other notable music venues. In August of 2018 this band headlined the Rainy Days Festival held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. The name “Vision Ahead” holds deep personal significance to Barber..."Support the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)

His lyrical approach to line construction and depth of harmonic sensibility allow him to record and play all over the world with such master players and burgeoning stars as David Hazeltine, Ugonna Okegwo, Donald Vega, Willie Jones III, Rick Germanson, Quincy Davis, David Wong, Jason Brown, Dezon Douglas and Rodney Green. A prolific composer, Fowser has celebrated four cooperative releases on Posi-tone Records, co-led with vibraphone virtuoso, Behn Gillece. His debut release as a leader, Standing Tall earned him the number-one spot on JazzWeek Radio Chart seven weeks in a row. Each track reflects a contemporary treatment of conventional harmonic concepts—a creative manipulation that has become part of his signature sound as a composer and an arranger, as well as a soloist. Set for release in February 2017, Now Hear This, Fowser’s second release as a soloist for Posi-tone features 11 original compositions and the same chart-topping lineup as Standing Tall: Josh Bruneau, Rick Germanson, Paul Gill and Jason Tiemann. Performing live every Friday night, his blistering quintet headlines the New York nightlife scene at the Django inside the Roxy Hotel on the corner of Walker and Church (www.thedjangonyc.com). Fowser’s fluid phrasing and melodic approach to improvising developed as a result of his exposure to the rich musical legacy of the Philly Sound, following in time with the rhythmic footsteps of John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Philly Joe Jones, Benny Golson and The Heath Brothers. Attending The University of the Arts in the early 2000s, Fowser studied with Tony Salicandro and Chris Farr, before transferring to William Paterson University in New Jersey, where he studied with NEA Jazz Master, Harold Mabern—an artistic force who remains one of Fowser’s major musical influences, today. As a grad student at SUNY Purchase, Fowser studied with contemporary legends of the tenor saxophone Ralph Lalama, Grant Stewart and Eric Alexander—the latter with whom he forged a professional relationship, subbing for Alexander on many of his gigs, and playing with him live, in classic two tenor context. Becoming more visible on the live music scene, in the latter 2000s Fowser enjoyed both downtown and uptown residencies at iconic New York venues. Possessing a voice filled with delicious subtleties and striking authenticity, Nancy Harms has been declared “an original” with “a truly special voice and style” by DOWNBEAT magazine. Will Friedwald of the Wall Street Journal stated that “she engages the listener by seeming to put her whole soul completely forward…after hearing her just once, you'll never want to let her go.” Audiences all over the world keep coming back again and again to hear this rising-star, international jazz vocalist cast her spell and bare her heart. Born and raised in Minnesota, Harms relocated to New York City in 2010. She has toured Europe multiple times since 2010, with her most recent tour taking her to such prestigious venues as Copenhagen's “Standard” and “Jazzhus Montmartre”, Paris' “Duc des Lombards” and “New Morning”, “Herr Nilsen” in Oslo, Stockholm's “Fasching”, and other stops in Norway, Italy, The Netherlands, and Denmark. She has loved playing the Copenhagen Jazz Festival for the last four years in a row (along with many other festivals in greater Denmark) and hopping north to play Norway's Sortland Jazz Fest twice, and Norway's AnJazz Festival in Hamar. In North America, Nancy has appeared in the major jazz festivals of Pittsburgh, the Twin Cities, and Quebec City in Canada and has experienced the fun of touring her albums in many clubs across the U.S. Nancy's NYC appearances have included her own shows at Birdland, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola (Jazz at Lincoln Center), Smalls Jazz Club, The Kitano, 55 Bar, Mezzrow, and several other venues, including a series of performances with trombone legend Wycliffe Gordon; among them Dizzy's, The Lenox Lounge, and concerts in Toulouse, France. She premiered her most recent show entitled “Ellington at Night”, at Manhattan's famed Metropolitan Room in which the NEW YORK TIMES described her as “…[an] enigmatic woman of mystery forging her own path”. In addition to her own CDs “Dreams In Apartments” and “In The Indigo”, she appears on Wycliffe Gordon's disc “Hello Pops” and on Jeremy Siskind's releases “Finger-Songwriter” and “Housewarming”. One of her self-penned tunes from the “Dreams In Apartments” album (“Weight Of The World”) placed 3rd in Popjazzradio.com's international listener poll of top jazz tunes of 2014 with over a million and a half votes. Go! - Won't Give In Video: - Rolling back to me Favorite places to play: “New York, Copenhagen, Paris, but it's all about the audience.” Best quotes from Nancy: “It really comes down to the audience for me, if the audience comes, really open-hearted and you can feel that space already, I just love a really open audience who is kind of game to go into their heart with you.” “In the jazz realm, I like a lot of space because I love the detail, and if there is too much going on, that's not as much fun for me.” From “The Desire Map” a book by Danielle Laporte: “What are you really going for? So you don't get caught up in what everybody else is going for, what are the core emotions that you really want to feel and what makes you feel that way and be really honest about it.” “I was trying to be a recovering perfectionist.” Singers that have worked with Nancy: Nika Sings, Emily Braden, Katie Kerdie, Michelle Denise Michaels Writing songs for people Nancy knows. A young Scott Tixier (http://scott-tixier.com) arrived in New York City from France speaking no English but determined to become a professional musician at the highest level. He quickly received accolades from the best in the business. Grammy Award winning bassist Marcus Miller says that Tixier “is making an international name for himself. I heard him in France and was immediately struck by his individuality and his sound.“ Guitarist Pat Metheny says, “[Scott] has found a place for himself within the elite community of New York jazz musicians, no small feat.” In an interview with the All About Jazz in 2010, violinist Mark Feldman called Scott “really up-and-coming and very talented.” And Jean-Luc Ponty said “I have heard Scott’s recordings, seen his live performances and I think that he stands above the crowd of current jazz violinists around the world.” Scott has played at Carnegie Hall, at the Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Blue Note Jazz Club, The Apollo Theater, the Smalls Jazz Club, The Stone, Roulette, Smoke Jazz, Hammerstein Ballroom, Joe’s Pub, America’s Got Talent on NBC and also on the David Letterman Late Show on CBS. Scott has performed and/or recorded with a wide range of artists, including: Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Anthony Braxton, Josh Groban, Joss Stone, Gladys Knight, Ariana Grande and Natalie Cole.

POIGNANT EXPRESSIONSQuickly becoming one of the most buzzed about jazz singers on the New York scene, Marianne Solivan does not remember an “ah-ha” moment that brought her to the music she has devoted herself to: “I don’t recall having a big moment that made me like jazz. I just dug it.”It is that same simplicity of statement with its intrinsic honesty that characterizes Solivan’s style. The infallible swing of Ella, the daring of Betty Carter, the matter-of factness of Carmen McCrae…They can all be found in the voice of Marianne Solivan, whom trumpeter Jeremy Pelt has called “the modern-day paradigm to which all singers should aspire.” It is no coincidence that the 2009 Jazzmobile Vocal Competition finalist has graced recital halls, jam sessions and club stages with such noted musicians as Roy Hargrove, Steve Lacy, Jeremy Pelt, Ray Gallon (Ron Carter, Lionel Hampton, T.S. Monk), Ugonna Ukegwo (Tom Harrell, Jacky Terrason) and Jane Monheit’s sidemen Neal Minor and Michael Kanan.Born in Queens, New York, Solivan’s family lived in Venezuela and New Jersey before settling in Massachusetts, where she attended high school. Already an alto sax student, it was in secondary school that she began singing seriously, studying classical voice and appearing in musical theater productions. Upon graduating, she entered The Boston Conservatory with a concentration in musical theater. After her first year in college, Solivan took time off from school and drifted away from singing, not returning for three years. The urge to resume studying voice and go back to school coincided with her discovery of the voice that would become her greatest influence: Ella Fitzgerald. She recalls, “I purchased the four oddest recordings for a jazz newcomer: one of those Ella Fitzgerald songbook compilations, a Dominique Eade recording, Nina Simone Sings The Blues and At the Village Vanguard: Betty Carter. Fitzgerald, especially, made a great impression on her: “There’s such tremendous hopefulness in all her music. No matter how sad the ballad, no matter how bad the break-up song, there’s always a silver lining. “Solivan was singing pop when she entered Berklee College of Music, but quickly decided she wanted to learn this music called jazz. Earning a dual degree in Music Performance and Education, she taught music for a year before entering New England Conservatory and earning a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies.Armed with two prestigious degrees and formidable talent, Solivan moved back to the city of her birth in 2007, placing in the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition, appearing as the only featured vocalist on clarinetist Darryl Harper’s The C3 project recording, Stories in Real Time, and touring France as the lead vocalist in an innovative staging of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Solivan is as likely to pop up at jazz institution Smalls Jazz Club with a full band as she is an intimate restaurant with only a piano accompanist. Regardless, jazz lovers and musicians alike are captivated by her sound and her style. Not all are able to articulate what attracts them as well as Pelt. Ultimately, they just dig it.
