Paul and Amy sink their teeth into Interview with the Vampire, the movie project that spent nearly two decades trying to make it to the screen. They trace Anne Rice's fiercely specific vision, unpack the unexpected pairing of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, and explore how a controversial casting choice became a box-office smash. Along the way, they dig into the film's lush gothic style, its unmistakable queer subtext, and the complicated relationship at the heart of this very glamorous vampire saga. This week, we’re taking a summer rewind as Tommy revisits a fan-favorite episode with Malachi Barton of Camp Rock 3, Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, Stuck in the Middle, and more. This is a deep, introspective side of Malachi like you’ve never heard before. Today, he opens up about adjusting to living a very public life and the attention that comes along with that, what his relationship is like with social media, how Zombies 4 changed his life, how Zombies 4 made him realize how much he loves singing and dancing, if he ever wants to be on Dancing with the Stars, the message of Zombies 4 that he personally related to the most, the powerful advice that Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly gave him that he’ll never forget, what that Zombies group chat is really like, what all those different Zombies alternate endings are, if he was ever supposed to play Red’s brother in the Descendants franchise (a big online rumor answered), what his future dream projects are, his biggest celebrity crush (ahem Outer Banks), how he has handled his journey with anxiety, and so much more. Send us Fan MailOnce upon a time, people blamed tuberculosis on vampires.Seriously.In this Public Health Is Weird episode, we head to 1892 Rhode Island, where the deaths of several members of one family led to an exhumation, a suspected vampire, and a truly horrifying attempt at a cure. The real culprit was tuberculosis. We explore the strange connection between TB and vampire folklore, the discovery and treatment of tuberculosis, a messy Nobel Prize controversy, and a bigger question: Why do humans reach for supernatural explanations when something frightening happens that we can't explain? Kristen Stewart's back in the press cycle and the whole internet's talking about Twilight again — so we're doing a brutally honest review of New Moon, the moodiest, mopiest chapter of the saga. We rewatched as adults and it hits very differently. We get into the forest break-up that scarred a generation, Bella's months-long depression spiral (and those phantom Edward hallucinations), and the case that Jacob was right all along — and hotter. Plus the glow-up that saved Taylor Lautner's career, the strange ageing panic underneath it all, and that chaotic dash to Italy.Emotional, unhinged, excellent. And if you love this episode let us know, because we might do Eclipse next.Loved today's episode? It's Thursday, and that means it's time to talk politics with The Times Picayune/New Orleans Advocate's Stephanie Grace. Today, we learn how Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is wrapping up his time in Congress by challenging the MAHA agenda with vaccine advocacy. August marks the birthday of New Orleans jazz legend Louis Armstrong. In 2021, Hurricane Ida destroyed a building in the Central Business District where Armstrong spent much of his childhood. Years later, our managing producer Alana Schreiber visited the space to learn about efforts to reconstruct the building and honor Armstrong's legacy. Today, we give that story a second listen. For over 40 years, she has guided New Orleans' book consumers with her writing and radio conversations. Now, Susan Larson has announced her retirement from her show, The Reading Life on WWNO. She joins us to reflect on her journey as an author, critic and advocate for the local literary community. She also shares the following recommendations for those who wish to feel a stronger tie to New Orleans-related literature.Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole, the book that sets the bar for New Orleans comedy.Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table, by Sara Roahen, a classic of discovering our distinctive foodways. In the Land of Dreamy Dreams, by Ellen Gilchrist, one of the best social dissections of the city.Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice, captures the spooky side of the city. The Moviegoer, by Walker Percy, still speaks to the New Orleans atmosphere.NO Lit: 200 Years of New Orleans Literature, edited by Nancy Dixon, a very comprehensive anthology. The Ones Who Don't Say They Love You: Stories, by Maurice Carlos Ruffin—tales of a broad cross-section of New Orleanians.New Orleans City Guide 1938—The WPA guide is still surprisingly useful and informative.Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas, edited by Rebecca Solnit and Rebecca Snedeker, creative and intelligent essays and maps. The World That Made New Orleans: From Spanish Silver to Congo Square, by Ned Sublette—one of the seminal books about New Orleans culture. And of course: The Booklover's Guide to New Orleans, by Susan Larson---Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber. We get production and technical support from Garrett Pittman, Adam Vos and our assistant producer, Aubry Procell. You can listen to Louisiana Considered Monday through Friday at noon and 7 p.m. It's available on Spotify, Google Play and wherever you get your podcasts. Louisiana Considered wants to hear from you! Today we bring back Newton Lilavois to speak on the latest issue of one of my favorite books Crescent City Monsters #5 The Rise of Kingsley. Newton describes this as a prequel into the beginnings of the Overlord in the Monster Realm. Kingsley's Clan of the Grunch's as far as hierarchy in this world, Grunch's aren't respected taking up the same space as Vampires, Banshees, and Witches. Kingsley was different, stepping on the frontlines against enemy forces for the protection of the Order and other clans gaining respect. All the while his thirst for power heightened and the power of Dark Magic from strong spiritual people in New Orleans like Jonas stand in his path.Written by Newton LilavoisArtwork by Gian Carlo Bernal

Mary Shelley didn't just create Frankenstein - she helped invent modern science fiction while forever changing the landscape of horror. This episode, we explore her remarkable life: her radical parents, scandalous romance with Percy Shelley, the personal tragedies that shaped her, and the stormy night that gave birth to one of literature's greatest monsters. Along the way, we'll also trace how a novel written by an eighteen-year-old became one of the most influential stories ever told, inspiring centuries of debate about science, humanity, and what it truly means to be a creator. I believe it was Clay McLeod Chapman that recently said to me that if you're going to do vampires in your story, you have to find an original way to do it. Which admittedly in this day and age is a challenge. There are scant possibilities that have yet to be picked clean in books, film, etc.In The Instruction Manual to Being a Vampire, Craig took care to get it right, and do it his way. In this interview, he explains his process for arriving at including vampires in his story, and how to make them in a way that services the plot. Craig's take is very grounded and interesting. I think he made Clay proud. It's a great book, and we talk about it at great length in this chonky interview. I know it's a long one, but me and Craig go back 15 years, so there's going to be some nostalgia, yeah? That nostalgia took shape as a reflection on an anthology that Craig was in called Warmed and Bound, and also the anthology I published - The Booked. Anthology. We look at the powerhouse lineup that Warmed and Bound had, and ruminate on the good old days. For those of you who are new to Craig Wallwork, he has a fantastic trilogy of dark detective novels that I loved and you should check those out as well. I've gathered a list of books by Craig you can buy on my Bookshop page. For the folks who prefer YouTube: This is a public episode. On this episode of Slingshot Nation, we dive into the disturbing world of American vampires, beginning with the mysterious death of George Gall and claims that he was sacrificed as part of occult vampire activity. His story was set to be explored in the Netflix documentary "Vampires in the Gem City", but the project was unexpectedly cancelled just before its release date. We connect that case to other strange accounts and encounters recorded on The Confessionals, including James' terrifying experience from Episode 512, Desert Portal Death Cults. From occult rituals and secret groups to bizarre firsthand encounters, we explore whether these stories are isolated incidents or pieces of something much larger. This week: Thulio fights Karl the Fog at Outside Lands, Slayyyter saves a flop summer with "Brand New Chanel," Heated Rivalry casting discourse demands meat on the bones, Rubén turns Greg Araki's I Want Your Sex into an AMC Burbank side quest, and streamers double down on their video-podcast content-churn era. Plus a Punch-Up on job interviews with more rounds than Interview with the Vampire... and Black and Brown creatives whose indie projects somehow still have all-white casts. The Monster Squad, Cujo, The Fly, The Others, Jason Goes to Hell, and Lovecraft Country headline this episode of This Week in Horror History, covering August 10 through August 16. As summer horror starts giving way to spooky season, we're beginning the Halloween horror pregame with classic monsters, Stephen King terror, haunted-house mysteries, Jason Voorhees, cosmic horror, rabid-animal survival, and one of David Cronenberg's greatest body-horror transformations. Inside this episode:August 10, 2001 — The Others opens in U.S. theatersNicole Kidman waits inside a fogbound mansion where every curtain must remain closed, every doorway follows a strict ritual, and mysterious footsteps suggest that Grace and her light-sensitive children may not be alone. Alejandro Amenábar builds a gothic ghost story from silence, grief, locked rooms, and competing versions of reality. August 12, 1983 — Cujo opens in U.S. theatersStephen King turns a gentle Saint Bernard into the center of a brutally simple survival nightmare. Dee Wallace and a young child become trapped inside a failing car beneath the blazing summer sun while a rabid dog waits outside and their supposed shelter slowly becomes an oven. August 13, 1993 — Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday opens in U.S. theaters The Friday the 13th franchise blows apart the familiar image of Jason Voorhees and transforms him into a body-hopping demonic force. Family bloodlines, possession horror, temporary human hosts, gruesome transformations, and one unforgettable final tease send Jason into his strange New Line era. August 16, 2020 — Lovecraft Country premieres on HBOMisha Green's supernatural horror series follows Atticus Freeman, Letitia Lewis, and Uncle George across 1950s Jim Crow America, where sundown towns and systemic violence can be as deadly as the ancient creatures waiting in the dark. Cosmic horror, family history, inherited trauma, magic, body horror, and American history collide. Deep-Cut Spotlight — The Monster SquadDracula arrives with the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Gill Man, and Frankenstein's creature—and the only people prepared to stop them are a group of young horror fans who have spent their lives memorizing monster rules. Directed by Fred Dekker and written by Dekker and Shane Black, The Monster Squad turns fandom into survival training. A German diary must be translated, silver bullets must be tested, an ancient amulet must be protected, and a treehouse club has one night to prevent classic evil from taking control of the world. Funny, adventurous, spooky, and unexpectedly heartfelt, The Monster Squad became a beloved cult horror movie through cable television, home video, and generations of monster kids passing it along to the next generation. It is also perfect viewing for anyone beginning their annual Halloween movie-season pregame.Horror Birthdays This Week: Alfred Hitchcock, Halle Berry, Natasha Henstridge, and James Cameron enter the birthday roll, bringing connections to Psycho, The Birds, Gothika, Dark Tide, Species, Aliens, and some of horror and science-fiction cinema's most memorable killers, creatures, transformations, and survival stories.Weekly Recommendation — The FlyDavid Cronenberg's The Fly celebrates its 40th anniversary with a story that remains romantic, disgusting, funny, tragic, and profoundly human. Jeff Goldblum plays scientist Seth Brundle, whose revolutionary teleportation experiment goes horribly wrong when an unnoticed fly enters the pod beside him. The machine combines their genetic material, beginning a physical transformation that neither science, intelligence, nor love can reverse. With Geena Davis as journalist Veronica Quaife, Academy Award-winning makeup effects, unforgettable body horror, and a devastating central relationship, The Fly remains one of the defining horror movies of the 1980s—and an essential addition to any early Halloween horror watchlist. Plus, Weekly Spooky returns Wednesday with another original horror story, followed by more terrifying history, strange mysteries, horror movie discussion, and unexplained broadcasts throughout the week. From The Others and Cujo to Jason Goes to Hell, Lovecraft Country, The Monster Squad, and The Fly, this week in horror history proves that terror can hide inside a locked mansion, wait outside a stalled car, move from body to body, follow a family across America, gather the classic monsters, or emerge from a teleportation pod. The calendar may still say August, but the Halloween horror pregame is officially underway.
A self-proclaimed vampire. His harem of “witches.”And the small-town murder that shocked America. When twenty-four-year-old Sydney Loofe disappeared after a Tinder date, the quiet town of Wilber, Nebraska was stunned. Days later, her dismembered body was found scattered across nearby fields—and the horrifying truth began to emerge. Sydney hadn't just met the wrong man. She had crossed paths with a deeply disturbed psychopath and his dangerous accomplice. In The Vampire's Cult, investigative journalist Chet Hardin exposes the twisted world of Aubrey Trail, an aging con man who presented himself as an all-powerful being, and Bailey Boswell, the woman who called herself his “queen.” Together, they lured vulnerable young women into a spiral of sex, theft, and psychological manipulation—with deadly consequences.Through exclusive interviews, firsthand reporting, and chilling detail, Hardin unravels the making of a modern cult—and the social desperation that feeds it. In an era defined by false realities and toxic charisma, The Vampire's Cult reveals just how easily darkness can disguise itself as devotion.THE VAMPIRE'S CULT: The Untold Story of Obsession, Control, and a Small Town Murder—Chet Hardin
The Day We Invented a MonsterThe New Monsters – Episode One For thousands of years, humanity has created monsters. But we rarely know who created them. Vampires emerged from centuries of whispered folklore. Werewolves wandered through medieval Europe long before anyone thought to record the first storyteller's name. Ghosts belonged to abandoned houses, forgotten battlefields, and generations of frightened imaginations. Then, in June of 2009, something unprecedented happened. An ordinary graphic designer entered an online Photoshop contest and unknowingly created the first monster whose birth was documented almost frame by frame. His name was Eric Knudsen. The creature he imagined became known as Slender Man. This week on The Devil Within, Branden Morgan begins a three-part investigation into the first great myth of the internet age, exploring how a pair of manipulated photographs evolved into one of the most influential pieces of modern folklore ever created. More importantly... Why were millions of people so eager to believe? This isn't simply the story of Slender Man. It's the story of how the internet became humanity's newest campfire—and how mythology no longer requires centuries to evolve. In This Episode The horrifying 2014 Waukesha stabbing that introduced Slender Man to the world Why every civilization creates monsters The technological and cultural conditions that made Slender Man inevitable The rise of social media, YouTube, Reddit, and collaborative storytelling The Something Awful Photoshop Contest of June 2009 Eric Knudsen (Victor Surge) and the creation of Slender Man Why the monster's faceless design unsettles the human brain The psychology of the "uncanny" How thousands of strangers transformed one image into modern folklore Themes Explored Digital folklore Internet mythology Collective storytelling The psychology of fear Urban legends Horror history Media culture The evolution of folklore Modern monsters Slender Man Creepypasta Featured Topics The 2014 Waukesha case (introductory context) Eric Knudsen (Victor Surge) Something Awful Forums Photoshop Contest (June 8, 2009) The Uncanny Valley Collaborative internet culture Early social media The birth of Creepypasta Digital mythology The story doesn't end with two manipulated photographs. It begins there. Coming Next Week In Episode Two, When Fiction Escaped the Screen, Slender Man no longer belongs to his creator. YouTube filmmakers, artists, gamers, writers, and millions of strangers begin adding new chapters until something extraordinary happens. For the first time in history... we watch folklore evolve in real time. The Devil Within is written and hosted by Branden Morgan. Produced by Evio Creative. Watch full episodes and exclusive content on the Evio Creative YouTube Channel. If you enjoyed this episode, please follow the show, leave a rating and review, and share it with someone who loves history, folklore, and the darker corners of human imagination. Your support helps us continue exploring the stories that reveal not only the monsters we create—but why we create them.

For six months, slaughtered lambs and severed deer heads kept turning up on the doorsteps of New Forest churches, always with an inverted cross set close by, and some of the people who found them stopped going to worship altogether. When police finally caught the man behind it, he gave the court his name as Count Dracula.
