July, 2024. BCR visited the Hot Air Brewing in Creston, Iowa this summer. It is a bastion of liberality and acceptance. We were in Iowa to visit our friends Brian Terrell and Betsy Kennan of the "Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker Farm," in Malloy, IA -- about 30 miles south of Creston; Betsy and Brian introduced us to Iowan's Katie Davidson and Ryan Fuller. When we talked with her, Katie owned the Hot Air Brewery and Ryan is a farmer with his husband and performs drag as "Cherry Peaks."We wanted to get a sense of what life is like in a small Iowan town -- in a state that supports Donald Trump for President. It was a most revealing conversation.Contact: Alan Winson -- barcrawlradio@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The 26th Kateri Peace Conference held in Fonda, NY in mid-September, 2024 was entitled “What's Love Got to do with it?” The outcome of peace activism is the end of always-war. If, indeed, we are all connected on this minuscule green spot in a vast universe – if we are sisters and brothers who care for each other – why do we choose to kill each other in horrific and massive ways? Bar Crawl Radio hosts -- Rebecca McKean and Alan Winson -- moderated the Friday evening panel with Ann Wright, Brian Terrell, Brad Wolf, and Vera Anderson. The panel focused on three basic questions:Why do we consistently choose war? How do wars start? Are the causes really that complex? Are the causes of war knowable? If we know the root causes of war -- Can we come up with policies that would end war-making? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Its buildings remain: A medium sized Catholic Church – small Post Office – General Store – Dance Hall – City Hall. Now it is mostly empty – a husk of a town surrounded by massive corn fields.Becky and I were visiting two Catholic Worker friends who had been cultivating a small vegetable – goat and chicken farm since 1986. Their two children grew up in Maloy on the “Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker Community Farm.”Over those years -- besides working the farm -- Betsy Kenan perfected the crafts of weaving and looming – and Brian Terrell travelled protesting war and the spread of U.S. military and nuclear bombs throughout the world._____________________________For the next three BCR programs – we talked with Brian – Betsy and their friends in Maloy and Creston IA to get a feel for life in this American state which overwhelmingly supports Donald Trump for president, bans abortions after six weeks -- and which -- we learned – might be considering alternative – diverse -- ways of being in mid-America.The opening sound was recorded on Betsy's and Brian's porch. As co-founder of both the Catholic Worker newspaper and the movement of the same name, Dorothy Day is probably the most widely-known social justice Catholic in the modern American church. Even if you haven't read Day's writing, you've probably seen some of her more popular quotes reminding Catholics that living the gospel has a socio-political component. You may have read something from the newspaper she helped found, or even visited a Catholic Worker farm.  But what does it mean to be a Catholic Worker? What's the nature and structure of the movement, and what does a person have to do, if they want to join up? And does the institutional Catholic Church have any jurisdiction over the movement, the newspaper, or the Catholic Worker communities? On this episode of the podcast, Renée Roden talks about the history of the movement, and what it means to be a Catholic Worker today. Roden is a journalist and Catholic Worker based in Pennsylvania, and a frequent contributor to U.S. Catholic.  You can learn more about this topic, and read some of Roden's writing, in these links. “How the Catholic Worker movement stays grassroots online,” by Renée Roden https://uscatholic.org/articles/202402/how-the-catholic-worker-movement-stays-grassroots-online/ “House work: Catholic Worker houses of today,” by Karen Kirkwood https://uscatholic.org/articles/201109/house-work-catholic-worker-houses-of-today/ “A Catholic worker devotes energy to environmental activism,” by Jeannine M. Late November, 2023 -- John C. Wester -- Archbishop of Sante Fe -- spoke at the Church of Our Savior at E. 38th Street and Park Avenue. About 200 were gathered to honor the 43rd anniversary of the death of Dorothy Day – and – to consider the abolition of nuclear weapons. At the United Nations that week the countries that signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons were meeting. The United States was not one of them. The day after Archbishop Wester spoke – I met with two people who have dedicated their lives to peace in our world -- Brian Terrell and granddaughter of Dorothy Day – Martha Hennessy. Both had been on BCR – Martha in connection with her KingsbayPlowshares 7 protest at the Trident Nuclear Submarine Base in Georgia for which she was incarcerated in a Federal Prison for over a year. And, I first met Brian Terrell in covering the Witness Against Torture protests in Washington D.C. of the continued U.S. detention of dozens of Muslim men in Guantanamo. And I have talked to Brian many times since about his work to prevent a nuclear catastrophe. April 4, 2023 - Wednesday - Sekhmet Goddess Temple - Indian Springs, Nevada. Nevada Desert Experience's "Sacred Peach Walk. In the morning and afternoon the Peace Walkers would protest U.S. military drone warfare at Creech Air Force Base. And, in the evening we would gather at the Goddess Temple bonfire ton celebrate the New Moon and honor the first night of Passover. It was an apocryphal overlapping of two Angels of Death -- one long past meting death in an ancient desert and the other in Nevada.Up the road from the Temple – the Creech Air Force Base manages the training and deployment of military drone operators – whose job it is to watch suspected terrorists in places far away from Nevada and assassinate them – along with innocents – i.e. collateral damage. On this day, a few of the Peace Walkers committed to blocking the entrance to the Base and get arrested. Tuesday night Brian Terrell -- who had been arrested all over the world -- explained the arresting and charging process. In this program I spoke with Brian who contrasted being arrested as a peace protestor in the U.S to the more civilized approach in other countries; and with those who were arrested that day. There was also speculation as to why there were so many vehicles arriving at the Base that day -- many more than normal days - and we got a statement from the Creech AFB on the cause of the delays. Finally, I talked with CJ - a young man who was arrested for marking up a Stop sign and the nature of his commitment to world peace -- and with his grandfather -- George Killingsworth. Tonight's guest, Brian Terrell, lives in Enid, Oklahoma and created Red Dirt Cryptid Investigations. Brian fell into cyrtid research a few years ago, but his interest in them stems from an experience he had, when he was a kid, late one night. You see, when he was a kid, growing up on his grandfather's farm, he had a habit of forgetting to turn off the barn lights. In fact, he had forgotten to turn them off hundreds of times. Due to that, numerous times, his grandfather had sent him out to the barn to turn off the lights and make sure the doors were closed. Well, one night, in 1983, he had forgotten to turn the barn lights off again and his grandfather called him on it. The barn was about 80 yards from the house and suddenly, after making it about half-way to the barn, and eerie feeling came over Brian. He had done this over a hundred times before, but never had he gotten the ominous feeling that hit him, suddenly, that night. He tried to reason things out and remind himself that everything was okay. Nothing was out there but cows. Soon, he'd see how mistaken he was about that. This is a special edition of BCR - not in a bar but on the streets with a Catholic Worker activist. I recently talked with Brian Terrell in Union Square in NYC on a blistering, cold, sun-bright day in January 2022. He was in the city to give a talk at the recently installed, life-size, white, military drone statue by Sam Durant, above W. 30th Street on the High Line. Brian Terrell is a world-traveling peace activist who has been incarcerated in American prisons for protesting U.S.A. nuclear armament. I have known Brian for several years; he has been on BCR several times. We met several Januarys ago at a Witness Against Torture [WAT] protest in Washington DC. Until COVID, WAT members had marched annually for years in support of the Muslim men imprisoned in Guantanamo, Cuba.We talked in Union Square as Brian held a banner calling for the end of American support of the Saudi military's bombing of innocents in Yemen -- and then we walked along the High Line to the 25' Drone statue. This man's work for peace is long and deep and genuine. You may not agree with all of his views; that is unimportant -- Brian speaks a truth that must be heard by those living now in this troubled world and those who will inherit it. The United States and China are involved in an arms race, this one over missiles. Washington announced this week that it would roll out new weapons and a new strategy in a bid to close what it calls a dangerous missile gap with China, which has upgraded its missile systems over the past decade. Beijing, meanwhile, is warning Washington to “stop playing chess” around the region, to stay out of the South China Sea, and to think before it acts. A young black man, Ahmaud Arbery, was jogging through a neighborhood in February in a Georgia suburb. As he jogged past one house, the resident there called out to his son, and the two got into their pick-up truck, armed with a shotgun and a pistol, and they followed him. After a brief confrontation, they shot Arbery and killed him. Although this incident took place in February, it only became public this week. And nobody has yet been charged with any crime. Atlanta activist Estevan Hernandez joins the show. Loud & Clear’s series, In the News, is where the hosts look at the most important ongoing developments of the week and put them into perspective. The internationally-recognized central government reported its first case on April 10 and now says that Yemen has 21 cases of coronavirus, with three deaths. Yemen has been transparent about its infection rates, but the country is isolated and mired in civil war, and it does not have significant exposure to foreign travelers. In the meantime, Bernie Sanders has surged to a double-digit lead in national polls, followed by Mike Bloomberg. Joe Biden has dropped to third nationally. And Democrats will debate on Wednesday. It is the first debate for which Bloomberg qualifies. Another day, another hit piece against Sputnik Radio in the mainstream corporate media. This time, CBS News decided to essentially repeat an earlier New York Times piece about Sputnik operating in Kansas City, MO. They even interviewed the same person as the New York Times, who repeated her ridiculous assertion that Sputnik was responsible for dividing the country on health care. Why does the media feel so threatened by Sputnik? Mindia Gavasheli, editor-in-chief of Sputnik News’ bureau in Washington, D.C., joins the show. More than 2,000 former Justice Department officials have signed a letter urging Attorney General William Barr to resign, with one former prosecutor and friend of 40 years saying, “Everything he touches dies.” All of this is in response to the resignation of all the prosecutors involved in the Roger Stone case. They resigned because they say President Trump meddled in the sentencing and Barr did nothing to support them. John speaks with Ted Rall, an award-winning editorial cartoonist and columnist at www.rall.com. The US and the Taliban are preparing a peace deal that now appears imminent in Afghanistan. That peace deal seems to be moving forward, despite the fact that two more US soldiers were killed in Afghanistan in recent days and that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s opponents are protesting the election results declared today showing Ghani scoring a narrow victory. When Gates originally pled guilty, he agreed to a sentence of 5-6 years in prison. But prosecutors last week said they would have no objection to Gates getting no prison time, and they cited what they called his “extraordinary assistance” in the Mueller investigation. Wikileaks on Saturday released a third batch of documents from the United Nations showing that 20 inspectors who investigated the alleged chemical attack in Douma, Syria, concluded that the final report “did not reflect the team members who were deployed to Syria.” The documents show further that there was no proof that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ordered any chemical attack on Douma. Ambassador Peter Ford, the former UK Ambassador to Syria, joins the show. Newly-released court documents reveal that the Sackler family, the founders of opioid maker Purdue Pharma, quietly transferred $10 billion out of the company and into private trusts over the course of the past 10 years and sent $1 billion of it to overseas accounts. The withdrawals came at a time that the company was accused of fueling the country’s opioid epidemic and at the same time the family was being accused of hiding its wealth overseas as their company enters bankruptcy. Well, the Washington Post is now reporting that the country is Ukraine and the leader is President Volodimyr Zelensky. As tense negotiations over the future of the Iran nuclear deal continue, French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly offered a $15 billion loan to the country to compensate for the harm done by the Trump administration’s unilateral withdrawal. He is the founder of the Islamic Human Rights Commission. The three-year-old peace deal between the Colombian government and the FARC rebels has been beset by problems stemming from a wave of right wing repression and murder. One faction of the FARC led by FARC commander Ivan Marquez and other high-ranking demobilized rebel leaders have returned to the armed struggle while the majority of the FARC leadership has stayed with the Peace agreement. This submarine base is where the U.S. military stores its Trident nuclear missiles. We wanted to talk with four of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7, who were under house arrest and on bail, about the hearing and how they were doing. That week was also the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, and there were protests going on outside the Kings Bay Naval Base. So, while Becky and I sat at her brother's dining room table in Santa Maria, California, we called south Georgia. We first talked with Kathy Kelly, Brian Terrell, and Anthony Donovan while they were fasting and holding a vigil outside the gates of the Kings Bay Naval Base. The next day we spoke with four of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7. But that’s not good enough for demonstrators, who are continuing their protests and are demanding that he resign immediately. British Prime Minister Theresa May demanded today that Iran release a UK-flagged oil tanker that it had seized late last week in the Strait of Hormuz. She said the ship was seized under “false and illegal pretenses.” But the British continue to hold an Iranian tanker that they seized a week earlier off the coast of Gibraltar. And they took that action at the behest of National Security Advisor John Bolton. Dr. Zeinab Ghasemi, a professor of American studies at the University of Tehran, joins the show. Ukranian President Volodymir Zelensky’s party is projected to win a majority of seats in the country’s 450-seat parliament. It would be the first time since Ukraine’s independence in 1991 that a party has won an outright majority. But what does that mean for foreign policy, especially toward NATO and Russia? Brian and John speak with Bruce Gagnon, a contributor to Foreign Policy In Focus, and Jeremy Kuzmarov, a professor of American history whose latest book is “The Russians Are Coming, Again: The First Cold War as Tragedy, the Second as Farce”. President Trump welcomed Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan to the White House today for the first time. President Trump yesterday gave Attorney General William Barr sweeping powers to review and declassify documents related to how the Russia collusion investigation was conducted. Native Americans welcomed newly arrived pilgrims, showed them how to hunt and forage for food, and the two groups celebrated and gave thanks. But that’s a lie. The first mention of Thanksgiving came in 1627, six years after the Wampanoag tribe helped the pilgrims, and immediately after those same pilgrims massacred an entire Piquot village and celebrated their so-called victory.
