Hey! We've reached episode 80, and Jon was recently asked to DJ an 80s party, so he decided to do something special, go back to the stuff he grew up on in the 80s. Yep, that Old School Rap/Hip Hop. As Jon tells it, this is the music that made him want to be a DJ. So many days and nights were spent riding around in a lowrider with 15 inch Kicker woofers bumping this very music right here. This mix is perfect for the old school heads out there ane even the new folks who need an education in real Hip Hop. The mix includes tracks by Ice T, Fat Boys, Biz Markie, Kid N Play Doug E Fresh, Heavy D & The Boys, Special Ed, Eric B & Rakim, X-Clan, Run-Dmc, 3rd Bass, EPMD, BDP w/KRS-ONE, UTFO, Marley Marl, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. This week's Dad Bod Rap Pod episode revolves around the under-discussed golden era rap group X Clan and contains an insightful interview with the group's leader, Brother J. The Grand Verbalizer is a contemporary of groups like The Jungle Brothers but has had a different career path, as he has balanced music-making with deeply involved community work for decades. In the intro segment DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc reflect on their fandom of X Clan and Brother J's later project Dark Sun Riders. Next up we have a slightly-longer-than usual interview where Brother J gives us a Funkin' Lesson on his approach, his rhyme style, his time providing security for public speakers, and what he has been up to lately. Our theme song is rapped by DEM ONE over a beat by friend of the program Cutso. This episode was edited by Taylor Weng and we appreciate her assistance. prt performed at 50 years of hip hop celebration in trenton. Poor Righteous Teachers was a hip hop group from Trenton, New Jersey, founded in 1989.[1] Often referred to as PRT by its fans, Poor Righteous Teachers was known as a socially and politically conscious hip hop group, with musical content inspired by the teachings of the Nation of Gods and Earths. Wise Intelligent, as the lead MC, was the most visible and well known member of the group. Culture Freedom provided vocals and production, and Father Shaheed served as a DJ and producer. About.com ranked the group's lead MC, Wise Intelligent, number five on its list of the 10 Most Underrated Rappers, calling him "one of the most creative MCs of our time."[2] PRT debuted in 1989 with the release of the single "Time to Say Peace" b/w "Butt Naked Booty Bless." The trio released its first album, Holy Intellect, in 1990,[3] amid a number of similarly pro-Black albums such as Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet, X-Clan's To the East, Blackwards, and Brand Nubian's One for All. While not as commercially successful as these albums, Holy Intellect received critical acclaim and spawned the group's only major radio hit, "Rock Dis Funky Joint." PRT returned in 1991 with its second album, Pure Poverty.[3] The album was not as commercially successful as its debut, and was not as acclaimed. The lead single "Shakiyla (JRH)", became a minor rap hit that year. The group's third, and possibly most successful release to date, Black Business, was released in 1993.[3] Sales were once again limited, but the album was a critical success. The album's lead single, "Nobody Move", received little radio airplay. After a three-year hiatus, PRT returned as a group in 1996 with its fourth album, The New World Order.[3] Released in a new Hip Hop era, the album received little attention, failing to reach the Billboard 200 album chart. The album's lead single, "Word Iz Life", was barely able to reach the Hot Rap Singles chart, peaking at the chart's lowest position, #50. Despite the lack of significant attention, the album, like its past releases, received significant acclaim. In 2001, Poor Righteous Teachers dropped the rare underground release Declaration of Independence.[3] In 2006, Cha-Ching Records released Rare & Unreleased, a compilation of rare Poor Righteous Teachers songs and remixes.[4][5] PRT had a short feud with rapper YZ over reels of tapes that YZ would not give back to their owner, PRT.[6] Father Shaheed died on May 26, 2014, from a motorcycle accident.[7] References[edit] ^ Huey, Steve. Biography of Poor Righteous Teachers at AllMusic. Episode 101 is an ode to 1990. This was a defining moment in hip-hop as the musical tides started to turn. The 80s were done, as were many of the styles and genres to come out of that decade. Rap dominated the airwaves and took over pop culture as we know it. While both MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were at the top of the pop charts, it was influential voices like Chuck D, Ice Cube and Shock G that provided the sounds cherished to this day. The Afrocentrism movement was huge as legendary groups such as X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Public Enemy provided anthems throughout 1990. That same year, we had classics that were bound to wreck your body and say turn the party out…Treat ‘Em Right, Bonita Applebum, The Humpty Dance and Jingling Baby. It wasn't just music, the movies that came out in 1990 still hold a special place in our hearts. Watching House Party over and over. Laughing at Full Force saying everyone smells like pussies or when Chill couldn't stop bumping the table while dragon-breath Bilal would try to mix. Who doesn't watch all of Goodfellas every time it's on TV? Doesn't everyone do the same yearly Christmas ritual and watch Home Alone? Air Jordan V's were on every kid's feet. The Simpson's were on every kid's TV. Posters of Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were on every kid's bedroom wall. It wasn't just any year, it was one of the greatest. On episode 101, we pay homage to one of the most important years in hip-hop -- 1990! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

MAKEBA MOONCYCLE  I’m not a female MC! I'm a MC for life! Traveling around the universe looking for a way to release, inside there's a fire when set free comes peace! Makeba has been writing and performing since she was a child. Did she always know that she wanted to be an MC? Did she know that her writings and poetry would open a door to being a lyricist or a MC? No, Makeba looked at writing as a way to escape and the universe led her to connect with people in each stage of her life. From dancing lessons, piano lessons and being exposed to hard work and entrepreneurs helped her on my journey. Makeba believes that life experiences will shape your decisions and directions some right some wrong. All of these turns introduced her to a life, a world and to people that have prepared me for important moments. Her love for dance took her to clubs where she met LinQue. Makeba's love for helping others led her to the BlackWatch movement and X Clan and Sonny Carson. Makeba's loyalty to friends led her to helping in business which led her to MC Lyte. Which led her to finding talented artists and producers who eventually became family. Putting others and supporting their dreams before her own became part of an instinctive nature that taught her many things. Makeba said she was thankful to the people that inspired me even though she was afraid to show her skills, this fear brought on by her fear of loss. Makeba's first experiences in a professional recording studio was with X Clan, ISIS and Queen Mother Rage. She was able to road manage for ISIS, Queen Mother Rage, YZ and X Clan. When out with X Clan she only assisted Professor X and the road manager Walter. Hands on training was better than any book or instruction manual. Makeba found that she had an ear for talent, especially great producers. Makeba said that she learned a lot from those experiences which showed her how to work and maneuver within the music business. The first professional song Makeba recorded besides backgrounds and hooks was on MC Lyte's album Ain't No Other on the song Hard Copy produced by Backspin. Her MC name at this time was Kink Ez because she had locks and her hair locked up fast giving her antennas to the universe. Recording with Lyte and LinQue was amazing and lit a fire in her that could not be extinguished. Before the song a strong friendship/sisterhood was formed along with a management company called Duke Da Moon. Our dream was to manage LinQue and the other artists. At this time Makeba was focused on running the company, not music. While managing several artists she formed a group called Afrodeeziacs with Asia Minor, the group's demo was produced by Down Low productions own Self and Goldie. While looking for tracks for LinQue's album with Ruffhouse she met a production team called Friendly Fee Amelia and Kevin Moore. After leaving Duke Da Moon she began to record solo tracks with Friendly Fee the first being H20 with many more after that. Makeba recorded many songs and Friendly Fee put out her first single as Makeba Mooncycle called Desert Storm that was picked for a New MC's compilation on Rhino Records called Phat Beats and Bra Straps. Then another single called Ahhh featuring the COINS by this time Friendly Fee changed their name to Masters of the Art. With Masters of the Art, Makeba had written and recorded an extensive catalogue of songs. While performing in Washington DC she met promoters from Africa who said they wanted her to come and perform. Makeba performed on the FESTAM Tour of West Africa in Dakar, Senegal opening up for African artists in big venues and she performed day and night at smaller venues and schools. Armed only with a distribution deal from Orpheus/EMI, which did not pan out because they wanted her to pay for features she quickly parted ways. A veteran DJ with close to 40 years of experience. An avid music lover since birth and collecting records since he was a toddler. Starting out at age 11, doing his first job as the house party Dj for his family and friends in the neighborhood, Prime honed his skills graduating to making mixtapes, djing school dances, even hosting his own hotel event while in high school. Developing his beat making and production skills while in college, Prime was given the opportunity not only to be the main Greek and Campus party DJ at Bowling Green State University, but to take his talents to the airwaves of primetime DJ of the campus radio station WBGU 88.1 (Power 88). After a year, he became the Urban Director for his success of turning a subpar station into a competing and rival station against commercial stations in Northwest Ohio area. Using his dorm room as a primary location, Studio B-237 (his actual room number) was launched. In that one room, he co-founded his first rap group, Black Minds of Music, which eventually recorded more than 70 songs, performing in local shows and shined as opening acts for X-Clan and Minister Louis Farrakhan over the course of his college career. PRIME continued to produce Hip Hop tracks after college, working with local artists in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. He contributed to the fast-selling Columbus Mob album “MIDWEST FUNK SOUNDTRACK”. PRIME produced Jakk-N-Jill’s “The Chronic” and assisted production on Insane’s “Tahitian Treat” and AKA & Eddie B’s “The Outro”. Tai-Pan, PRIME’s friend from college, was next to be blessed with the skills of PRIME on his first full-length album entitled “THE RISE, THE FALL, THE RISE” on Educated Records, exclusively produced by PRIME which sprung the single of the same title featuring Terri Whitlow formerly of Teen Dream. The summer of 1996, PRIME released his debut solo effort, “BUSTOWN FLAV”, a cassette EP which became the hottest collection of independently produced songs everywhere on the Columbus streets. The hit single “Bustown Flav”, the personal confession of “Ax Anybody…” and “Dis Style (featuring Ci-Dubble and Taleeb)” are among the EP’s brightest moments. Because of its success, PRIME was rewarded with opening show dates with Redman, Jamal & Keith Murray; all of the respected Def Squad. Spring of 1997, Columbus witnessed the exclusively produced Taleeb “TALEEB: VERBAL TACTICS”, which featured the hit singles such as “I Smell A Blunt” and “Verbal Tactics”. But with the radio success of “The Circumstances”, PRIME has been the most sought-after producer in the city. Since then, PRIME has released two stellar CD’s THE BIRTH OF MR. JOSHUA: the breakneck pace experience and his self-titled CD THE TALENTED MR. LINDSEY. Besides his own work of music, PRIME has completed two classic albums for EKLYPZ PERIOD…”E=MC2″ and “IT’S A PLEASURE 4U2 MEET ME”; two hot EP’s for SILAS…”Unlucky 7 Vol. 1″ and “Unlucky 7 Vol. 2: Private Thoughts Gone Public” as well as a full length album entitled “Mr. Nice Guy”. PRIME has also worked and put together a very hot and marketable CD for female sensation MECHIE whose mix of hip-hop and R&B are currently making her debut “Reality Check” a hot street commodity. Besides production, PRIME has since ventured into graphic design and album consulting. Mentoring and assisting up and coming artists with designs, ideas, and concepts geared for better marketing and exposure for those he has worked with. Some of the artists he’s worked with are the late Camu Tao, Copywrite 78, S.P.I.R.I.T., J Sands of Lone Catalyst, Sev Static, BJC, Akil aka Doc Frank, Jae P., Robert

As I delve and deep dive into the archives, striving to perfect my podcast's milieu, I present the first of what hopefully may be a small mini-series of archival conversations by either myself or my peers - that I am simply calling 'Chronicles'. Today's show being the latter. From 1988 to 91 Jamieson Grillo hosted the 'Saturday Night Rap Devastation' show at WRBB 104.9FM at Northeastern University in Boston. During the quar' Jamieson and I were talking on the phone while he was going through boxes of old cassettes in his office, casually he noted a 1990 X-Clan interview he'd just discovered. I inquired and he then told me of his time chasing down live interviews to be broadcast on the radio. He then mentioned doing the same with KRS-One. Soon enough he digitized those cassettes, we checked them out and he agreed to allow me to host an episode where I share these with you. They are raw, of the moment, audio captured on the fly. At the time, Jamieson was just getting his start working in the music business. During this period, DJ Shame (later of Vinyl Reanimators) was the radio show's DJ, he would continue the show after Jamieson's eventual departure. I start the show with KRS-One and Jamieson, which was recorded at two different times, primarily on Tues Oct 9th, 1990. Part one was done as a phone interview from the studios of WRBB while part two was recorded live backstage at a club called The Channel (a famous spot in South Boston), shortly before KRS and D-Nice were to take the stage. I follow the KRS convo with an unreleased remix to “Dope Beat”, because he mentions it being the next single to the then brand new album Edutainment. Then, we have the X-Clan conversation which takes place backstage at a venue called the Hub Club in Downtown Boston on Mon, Oct 22nd 1990. It's an incredible snap shot of X-Clan fully intact who were promoting their indelible debut To The East, Blackwards. The interviewer is briefly joined by a friend who asks a few questions, as well. At a moment, the night manager of the club even attempt to kick them out near the end. I myself had a moment where I got to become friends with Professor X shortly before he passed away and gotta say, this was a pretty incredible artist. I met Brother J many years before that and have to say he has always been one of the great voices of the genre. Now, on this same very show was the iconic DJ Clark Kent which Jamieson recorded on the handheld as well, albeit briefly. I thought I'd include here. Now, the audio isn't the greatest but I have to thank Jerry Danielsen for his work editing and tweaking the sounds to make it better listen. The interviewer Jamieson would go on to intern for S.O.U.L. Records and then PWL and eventually Tommy Boy. I know him even more from his Redline distribution company that has released/distro many dope records and projects PLEASE visit his store and support: https://redlinemusicdistribution.bigcartel.com Learn more about your ad choices. A.C. The Program Director - Mixtape #5 - The Temple Of Yesmen MixtapeKRS-One requested that I do a conscious HipHop mixtape for his organization ... so I put a good effort into this one, making sure there was plenty of female presence on the mix, and I made this one differently from any of the other mixes, in that this one was produced so that adults and children could listen to it together without feeling uncomfortable about the content, language, subject matter ... "This mixtape is clean for kids, but not soft or watered-down" ...1. Breathe Control II - Boogie Down Productions (KRS-One) produced by KRS-One Jive/RCAMy favorite joint from the Edutainment LP... I have never heard another DJ play this record, and I love it when other DJ's sleep then dis themselves when they say, "...maybe I don't play it cause I don't like it...".2. Analyze (instrumental) - DJ Mark The 45 King Bronx ScienceSomebody told me that Jay-Z deserves props for giving The 45 King his respect. I didn't need Jigga... His contribution will live on forever through the DJ...3. More Than You Know - Mission produced by Headnodic&Moe Pope Insiduous Urban RecordsMy favorite joint from the One LP... I've still never seen them perform this song live... I hate it when I go to see great artists perform and they don't do their best, most slept-on joints... Like Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Run DMC... This one's for A.C.&Sage, both of my children love this song...4. Can't Call It - De La Soul produced De La Soul Big Beat/Tommy BoyOut of all the joints that got play from the High School High soundtrack, how come DJ's played this one least? There's no good excuse... Well maybe they 'didn't like (this) song' either... I send this one out to Trugoy. Thank you for the respect, it's all mutual (I'm still waiting for my exclusive, remember?...).5. Spice (instrumental) - DJ Mark The 45 King Bronx ScienceHe's all over this mix... Do we need an industry-pimped could'a-been to give a pioneering legend like The 45 King his due respect? I hope not!...6. Superbad (instrumental) - The Beatnuts produced by The Beatnuts RelativityOne of my favorite beats from The Beatnuts first LP... Of course DJ's don't spin it... Maybe they 'don't like it'... Maybe 'it's too slow' and maybe they're afraid 'the people won't dance'...7. Lovely Day - Dynasty produced by Armstead Fat BeatsAnother classic B-side that I broke... I call this great 'feel good' music. So good that I was down to put the clean version (which I usually won't do) on this mixtape for the kids...8. More Than A Game - Substantial produced by Hyde Out Pro. Hyde Out RecordingsSubstantial and Mighty Casey have been the prototypical A.C. The P.D. mixtape recording artists... I got the artists who used to be fresh, and the artists who are new and fresh. They're all on my mixtapes...9. Aesthetic Appeal freestyle - Aige of The Aesthetics produced by Indione 6th & Mass. RecordingsCongratulations to this crew for this, their first single... Classic material...10. "W" - Raw Produce produced by Raw Produce Insomnia RecordsThey made this song for 'you know who'... Another classic slept-on B-side...11. They Don't Know Jack - Brother J of X-Clan f/Prof.X produced by Scratch Me Pro. PolydorAhhh, by the way, the living legend Brother J made one classic appearance on Professor X's two solo LP's... And here it is, for you, for those who, like me, love Brother J,... but with Professor X's excessive talking mixed out...12. Gimme Dat (Woy!) - Boogie Down Productions (KRS-One) produced by KRS-One Jive/RCAI cannot believe I am the only DJ I heard play this song since the 80's... Which is why I was forced into the life-long never-ending debt of finding the wax. I knew that if I didn't play these records, the sucker DJ's were going to let everybody forget about jams like these... This song is another example why I say that, in my opinion, BDP is Hiphop music’s most signifigant contribution to society…13. I Went For Mine - Diamond D produced by Diamond D Mercury/PolygramLeft off the Stunts, Blunts and Hiphop wax, for some wack reason... Thanks to the Don't Sleep people for pressing a few of these for the real DJ's. And thanks to the sucker DJ's for sleeping...14. Dope Femininity - Yo Yo produced by Ice Cube&Sir Jinx AtlanticWith The Funky Hiphop Punch from Delvon Tha Funky HomosapienSurprise! Del was credited with co-production on this rare slept-on B-side... With his name printed as Delvon. Back then, we never thought Ice Cube's little cousin would go on to be as good as, if not better than, he ever was... You can already hear what a genius he is… This is vintage, very cool classic stuff...15. Increase The Peace-What's Going On - Three Times Dope prod.by Lawrence Goodman Arista3XD, Philly, the 80's, ahhhhhh... Classic! This joint from the LP was very slept-on, and went nicely into the mix...EST kicks a very ill verse…16. Show Me A Hero - Leaders Of The New School f/Busta Rhymes Electraproduced by The Vibe Chemist Backspin A.K.A. Marlon KingThis group recorded two ultra-classic, timeless, innovative, evolutionary LP's... When Busta left L.O.N.S., Hiphop's musical evolution stopped (right about the time of KRS-One's The Return Of The Boom Bap LP), artistically and philosophically... L.O.N.S. will live forever, on my mixtapes... They messed up by letting the industry derail and break them up... This is basically a Busta Rhymes(when he was fresh) solo joint with the rest of the crew doing the back-up vocals…17. When I Make It - Original Flavor produced by Original Flavor AtlanticThis song (WOW!) has been forgotten for far too long, and it's perfect for this mixtape for the younger generation... This song expresses what millions of young people feel about the Hiphop they manifest...18. Acknowledge Your Own History - The Jungle Brothers prod. by The Jungle Brothers WBOff of, in my opinion, the greatest Hiphop LP of all-time, Done By The Forces of Nature. Some LP's may have been as good, but NONE better!19. Cheatin Days Are Over - Mike Nice f/Marley Marl's In Control Volume II Cold ChillinOne song that should have been a single from this LP... A super dance hit. Of course, the sucker DJ's slept, so I'll play it for you...20. Too Much Posse - Public Enemy prod. by Bill Stephney, Hank Shocklee&Carl Ryder Def JamMy choice for most slept-on joint from their classic first LP, Yo! Bum Rush The Show. This one features Flavor Flav, and when I heard it, I thought Flavor was going to be as dope as Chuck. From this LP to the third, Chuck was my favorite MC... The point of this song? At a party, don’t get too involved with a shorty from from another part of town if your crew is not around!…21. Just To Get A Rep (acc.) - Gangstarr/Little Samba (instr.) prod.by Einstein of Ugly DucklingI heard the Scratch Perverts pressed up this dope white label remix... I don't know, but thanks...22. Trunk Of Funk - Rob Swift produced by Rob Swift Table TurnsFrom the new Rob Swift Sound Event LP... Can't nobody say that I don't respect turntablism or the turntablist. I just don't respect the way the industrialism of all of Hiphop's recognizable elements has created a condition in that the DJ's are now judged first by his/her cutting and scratching ability... All of the DJ's on the songs I put on my mixtapes are the best in the world, and they all get down in the most serious ways on the records... For your listening pleasure, I'll leave that to them...23. Life, Work It Out (Instrumental) - Zaire Black & June22 prod. by June22 Puma Strut 45'sPeace to my peoples Zaire and June! Thanks for the wax... I got your backs gee!24. Mrs. Manley - Capitol D & The Molemen produced by The Molemen Fat BeatsThis is my favorite new joint from this mixtape. And the All Natural are one of my favorite new Hiphop artists... 3rd Place Family stylee! Hiphop is the purest form of modern day soul music…25. Dog It - Digable Planets produced by The Digable Planets PendulumHow many DJ’s you heard spin this record?... The strong, naturally fresh woman in Hiphop is due respect... Their contribution to the evolution is undisputable! Dig and you will find... I didn't realize, until after I recorded the mix, that Ladybug shouts out Bahamadia in this song. And what do you know, she coincidentally happens to be on the next selection...26. Exertions - Bahamadia f/Jedi Mind Tricks produced by Stoupe SuperegularOne of many classic joints from the best LP since 2000, Violent By Design... Bahamdia's verse was the only one clean enough to put on this mix from this song, which went great with the female Hiphop influence on this CD... Peace, love and respect to to my Jedi Mind crew, my favorite newer school recording artists... I hope Just Allah gets back in the studio for another album, and stops beefin'...27. Latifah's Law - Queen Latifah produced by Louis 'Louie Louie' Vega Tommy BoyI guess the sucker DJ's 'don't like this one' either, cause they never play it. Thanks. Because of you, I stay fresh all day everyday... This song says produced by Louie Vega, but she rhymes as if The 45 King did it...28. Big Bad Sister - MC Lyte produced by DJ Mark The 45 King First PriorityOn this LP, Act Like You Know, she showed the first signs that she was 'losing it' on the single, When In Love. The A-side had a dope Pal Joey produced joint called Take It Off, and Poor Georgie. But the B-side was like a whole classic album by itself. The volume level on this single vinyl LP is way too low for me to play at spots, I need a DOUBLE VINYL copy of this one!...29. Erase Racism - Kool G Rap,Big Daddy Kane&Biz Markie prod.by Biz&Cool V Cold ChillinSpecial request by my Hiphop soul brother from another mother, M.A.X.-One! This classic joint had a classic video to go with it... Hiphop long ago transcended the man-made, false reality, separatism of 'black&white', and will do the same thing with 'God&Allah' if it's evolution ever continues...

Has secular hip hop gone religious? One platinum selling artist gives performances on high profile stages that resemble worship services. Another critically acclaimed rapper includes on his album interludes with expositions from Deuteronomy. This small trend is a surprise. In the 90s, hip hop music was generally anti Christian see Ras Kass. Paris, Public Enemy, and X Clan advocated militant nationalism. Wu Tang, Brand Nubian, Rakim, Digable Planets, and Poor Righteous Teachers espoused Five Percent beliefs a Nation of Islam sect. Nas and Jay Z employed semiblasphemous statements and imagery. Hip hop music has often been spiritually minded, but recent times saw less spiritual content. Hedonism and nihilism permeate hip hops current stars are preoccupied with girls, gold, and a good time. Yet, there are anomalies twenty four year old Chance the Rapper and thirty year old Kendrick Lamar. This Postmodern Realities Podcast episode is a JOURNAL author conversation with Vocab Malone about his Volume 40 6 feature article film Spirituality in Modern Hip Hop The Theology of Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper

Vincent M. Ward was born  in Dayton, Ohio. Growing up, Vincent participated in basketball, football, and baseball. Given his competitive nature, he excelled in all of these sports, but Vincent’s desire to be great meant that he would have to choose one. He chose basketball, which he still plays to this very day. In his four years of high school, Vincent is the first and, so far, the only player on the varsity basketball team selected to start in each game spanning the four years of high school.  Vincent decided it was a good time to pursue another dream  he had to dance. He paired up with his childhood friend, Broderick Dumas, whom they called “Night”, and the two of them went on to enter and win numerous dance contests. They formed a dance duo and called themselves “Night and Day” a.k.a. The Twin Towers, (since “Night” stood 6’5” and Vincent stood 6’4”). The dynamic duo was approached by many professional entertainers to perform. Day and Night signed with Dr. Ease and the Ease Town Posse, and they toured with such groups as Public Enemy MC Light, X-Clan, MC Hammer, Heavy D and The Boys and others. Eventually, Vincent decided to sign with the “Slam Syndicate” which led him to Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Vincent M. Ward has been successful in all of his endeavors, and the saying “The best is yet to come” has never been more relevant as he now pursues new dreams and new roles. His dream to act has brought him the greatest role yet in his role as Oscar in the sensational new series on Cable TV, “The Walking Dead!” Now the world will follow as Vincent M. Ward makes his way to the top!..

We're so consistent right now that we're doing part 2s to episodes. After the weight of the race issues and the nostalgia of reminiscing of part 1 of episode 4, we get a little lighter by getting into Kool Keith's "Sex Styles" album and "Total Orgasm" mixtape series, Necro and horrorcore & pornocore sub-genres in Hip-Hop, and reinventing your identity in Hip-Hop al la MF Doom (aka Zev Love X from KMD), Gnarls Barkley(Cee-Lo Green and Dangermouse), etc. From there we get into what artists with a diverse catalog decide to perform and some of Nas' song selections for his albums, especially his mega-controversial N-Word album. We get into the evolution of how music is released in the digital age, our uncle's Hip-Hop preferences (including LL Cool J's Headsprung...still can't figure out what that song was about). We also speculate on snoring coke from mirrors, and we have banter about various rappers and Hip-Hop related things including Jay Electronica, Cormega, Wu-Tang, DJ Mathematics, La The Darkman, AZ, Black Milk, Elzhi, J.Cole, Slum Village, Madlib, J Dilla, the importance of featuring on another artists track, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, rappers finding religion, Nelly shooting up blocks and doing meth (and his career accomplishments as well), stories regarding Pimp Juice, Crunk Juice, & 4 Loko, the lady accused of sleeping with the entire Wu-Tang Clan, seeing people you grew up listening to (like Saigon & Peter Gunz) on Love and Hip-Hop & other reality TV, and the structure of Hip-Hop groups though history such as X-Clan, Public Enemy, and Little Brother. Afro-Digital Migration: House Music in Post Apartheid South Africa Vol. II

DJ Lynnée Denise (LA, Amsterdam, South Africa )

I wrote this during layovers between Toronto and London, on my way to Amsterdam for the summer. Before I start my next voyage, I wanted to offer my musical reflections on South Africa. Three days ago (April 27, 2014), South Africa's democracy turned 20 years old. I spent much of December and January in South Africa, thanks to the support of my community of listeners, family and friends and a generous grant from The Astraea Foundation Global Arts Fund. This was my third time in South Africa; the first trip happened in 2001 and the second in 2011. The purpose of the trip was to complete the SoundTracking Our Lives Tour, a project that simulated the migration pattern of house music from the U.S. to South Africa, launching in New York, traveling to Chicago and Detroit, and finally, concluding in Johannesburg. The purpose of the tour was to document the work of women who have played a role in the evolution of house and its transmigration, and are currently active in its development. My mission was accomplished. But what I realized almost instantly was since my last trip to South Africa I have developed a new vocabulary, a new understanding of the development of house music. I have been deepening my relationship with its influences, everything from traditional African drumming, to Philly soul, to the tambourines and choral clap rhythms of gospel. Clark Sisters, stand up. A few days before my landing in Jo'burg, Nelson Mandela made his physical transition. Accordingly, the energy on the streets reflected not only the sadness of his passing, but also the presence of many questions, particularly the politically and socially charged question of ‘progress’ since democracy. One thing that was extremely clear to me was the intricate ways that the apartheid regime institutionalized longstanding practices that until this day uphold the brutal inequalities that exists between Black and White South Africans and shamelessly so. Adrienne Maree Brown, my lover and trip companion, writes about the experience in more subtle detail here: http://adriennemareebrown.net/blog/2014/02/14/reflections-on-south-africa-part-2/ Still, even with the uncertainty that Mandela’s death brings, house music continues to dominant the sound of the nation. But there was a difference this time, between the house music I heard on the radio and the house music I heard on my taxi rides through the city, or in the cars passing me by on the streets. I had to admit that much of the house I heard on the radio was formulaic (a hard distinction to make with a genre of music based on repetition), and had blown up to “pop” status, losing some of its dark funk. As an outsider I can never really be sure about the politics of commercial vs. underground culture, the music industry, globally, is such a tricky beast. But I do know for sure that I felt less moved by what was most popular, most available. This is why it’s always good, as a global citizen, to seek out the underground community wherever you land. Find those cats you would roll with in your circle at home. The cats who avoid radio as much as possible and keep their ears to the street in search of that very specific sound; you simply know it when you hear it and it can be heard in so many different forms of music, in so many different places on the planet, all we know is that it’s a sound that unites us all. By the end of the trip I had collected around 100 songs from record labels (Soul Candi), DJs, producers and general house heads. Turns out that the majority of the music I was given did little in the way of touching that little thing inside of me that inspires movement and sets the stage for the perfect mix. I narrowed down my compilation to 17 songs and some of them were tunes I had been listening to for the past year leading up to my trip. Upon returning from South Africa, I spent the winter in Detroit with my honey and during that time I set up my turntables, along with my art. I rooted myself in our shared space and went to work. It was love work, release and reflection work happening in congruence with what Detroiters said was "the coldest winter ever." I spent hours reading, writing and listening to music, doing the best I could to create soundtracks from my travel, relationship and scholarship. The result was a session of mixes titled "The Hibernation Series." The first mix of the series, The Afro-Digital Migration: House Music in Post Apartheid South Africa Volume II, is a convergence of love stories - my love story with black music, and my love of a black magic woman. My love story of black music led me to the South African house scene, where I embedded myself this most recent trip with new questions of how, when and why house music permeates the soundscape of South Africa. This love has led me to uncover histories of migration, theories of escape, questions of origin and something even deeper: the work of pioneers like Frankie Knuckles (rest in power), in understanding the root systems of house. I've learned to stretch the roots of house beyond disco, gay clubs and the Black church in America. I had to come to understand that producers/DJs like Knuckles and his peers made music from a place of ancestral memory; they were plugged into the source, masterfully re-creating ancient rhythms using both new and dated technology. This means that rather than looking at house music as simply finding its way to SA townships from Black America, I saw that house music, in a way, repatriated to its motherland (haven’t said motherland since my early 90s X-Clan days, but its applicable here). My love of a writer woman led her to follow me to South Africa, where we learned together about house, the endless beauty of the land, and the political climate of this peculiar place. Together we witnessed the ghosts of the regime juxtaposed against the joyful and sexually liberating sounds of house; it truly is freedom music. We were both moved to the point of creativity, her to writing: http://adriennemareebrown.net/blog/2014/01/13/the-words-are-too-small-reflections-on-southern-africa-travels/ and me to create this mix. This was an incredibly important journey for us, sometimes challenging as we were thrown into a world where post apartheid SA, like post racial USA proved to be a more theoretical concept based on the changing of the guards from white to black people in power, with the model of white supremacy, and all of its arms and legs still firmly in place and in tact. Adrienne and I were invited by filmmaker Palesa Letlaka to speak together at the Afrikan Freedom Station, which was the first time we had ever witnessed each other at work and from that opportunity we connected with South African local artists who wanted to learn more about how we were weaving afro-futuristic and science fiction themes into discussions about house music and social justice. Overall, I can honestly say that the music for this mix came together and quite well. I am a firm believer that house music, like science fiction, provides us with the opportunity to engage and submerge ourselves in an alternative reality, for at the root of house music is deep faith and joy. It makes perfect sense that house music resonates among so many South Africans; it creates so much space for complexity. During a week where people have taken to the streets in protest of the acquittal of murderous George Zimmerman, the BBR Crew joined the protest with a historic, marathon 4-hour uncensored episode that voiced outrage and examined America’s racial dynamic. We’re mad as hell and ain’t gonna take it no more! The Angry Engineer, Masta Talka and the CO took to the airwaves and our resident MC: J-Crush took to the streets in a revolutionary, unfettered episode for the ages. Filled with clips that included President Obama’s take on the ruling, racial comedy and of the normal commentary, the revolution was both televised and podcasted. Hip-Hop’s call for justice included gems from Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Sista Souljah; X-Clan; Screwball; Ol Dirty, the Wu-Tang Clan and more. So give a lusty chant of: “No Justice, No Peace! “ It’s Boom Bap Radio!

Still peeved about standing in line at the airport due to sequestration? Yeah us too – metaphorically speaking. So just in case you missed it the first time, we've re-examined everything that was whack from last week: Lauryn Hill’s situation, the bombings in Boston, even that rice hating Elvis impersonator. Without the aid of J-Crush, the crew even gives a critical listen to that “Accidental Racist” Brad Paisley and that whack-assed hybrid he collabo-ed on with LL Cool J – now that really sucked! Hey, don’t worry, magnificent Hip-Hip was still on tap. X-Clan, Diamond D, Kool Moe Dee, 50 Cent and Terror Squad helped us sift through the mess. Yo, Mr. Whiteman, your red t-shirt actually does suck - it’s Boom Bap Radio!
