Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

It's Miles' birthday and we're here to celebrate it with a thematic episode of Casual Trek. And you know what? It's also Charlie's birthday, so we're going to celebrate both hosts with a special episode dedicated to some of the most memorable Mileses and Charlies in Star Trek! Miles O'Brien is a fantastic member of not one but two crews in Star Trek and we'll get to see both those incarnations here, with The Wounded bringing us some reminders of O'Brien's military history. He also gets into some engineering hijinks helping out a lizard man in Captive Pursuit. Charlie X is a complete dirtbag and we're better off only having the one episode with him in. We do get to see the Enterprise's gym and some sick moves from Kirk as he proves how much better he is than this 29 year old teenage boy. 16:03 TNG: The Wounded 37:52 TOS: Charlie X 1:09:36 DS9: Captive Pursuit Talking points include: Charlie Brown, Miles “Tails” Prower, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, My Adventures with Superman, Deep Kandor Lore, Smallville, Ultraman Blazar, People Just Do Nothing, Zammo and his Smack Habit, MASH, Dan Dare, The Beatles, Doctor Who, X-Men (Chuck Austen era), close-up magic (the hobby of creeps), The Twilight Zone, Third Rock from the Sun, Dawson's Creek, Marvel's The Beyonder, Zapp Brannigan, the sad legacy of D-Ream, Glee, Charlie Can't Tell Bryan Adams Tracks Apart, Q Anon Anonymous' episode on Jim Caveziel, V, having a lovely walk to Lewes, . Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedant's Corner: Sadly Bryan Adams didn't do any more movie songs for swashbuckling 90's movies. O'Brien is a verb now. Leaders are not born, they're created… literally in the case of fiction, created by creators of comics, books, movies, and other media! For this Quackcast I was inspired by two things: a video on Leader Characters by the satirical YouTube channel Terrible Writing Advice, and the Disney movie Lightyear, in which the lone wolf classical hero figure learns how to lead. Lots of traits are useful for leadership: Charisma, experience, age, rank, communication skill, empathy, compassion, dominance, and confidence among others, and different styles of leadership work better in different contexts. Take for example the military paradigm of the lieutenant and the sergeant - a lieutenant is typically the lowest ranking commissioned officer, they're a beginner. They're young and they're not experienced but they outrank enlisted men and non-commissioned officers who might have more experience than them. The sergeant is usually one of the highest ranking “non-commissioned officers”, they're usually older than the lieutenant, who outranks them, and they have a LOT more experience. This creates an interesting leadership dynamic- the lieutenant learns from the sergeant but they also lead in a different way from them. The sergeant is better at leading the soldiers and knowing what to do from a practical standpoint while the lieutenant is better at theory and interpreting with higher level orders, eg. “Our orders say we have to take that hill and meet up with the other squad near the river at this map reference, so I want to split the squad…” etc While sergeant will actually be able put all that into practice a lot better than the lieutenant could. - (Said by a non-military person, so this could be very wrong) Fiction is full of leaders, good and bad. Most Scifi tends to have a military influence so it all has a very familiar military hierarchical setup. Star Trek is especially known for its “good” leaders, who're inspiring, clever, brave, full of empathy, experienced, and wise. The perfect foil to them is Zapp Brannigan from Futurama who was specifically created to be the anti-Star Trek type leader with all the very worst traits that any leader could ever have. He's a horrible person, sacrifices troops meaninglessly, has a poor grasp of strategy, and takes advantage of his position for self-gratification and self-aggrandizement, all of which makes him beautifully entertaining as a character! He's one of my fave leaders in fiction, on a par with the 90s Star Trek leaders Jean-Luc Picard, Captain Benjamin Sisko , and Captain Kathryn Janeway. Leadership is a huge subject with lots of other aspects. Politics is a massive subsection in its own right! And we can't forget that it's the followers who actually give the leader power and if they choose to desert then that power can vanish… We cover all this and more in the Quackcast. Who're your fave fictional leaders and why? This week Gunwallace has given us a theme to The Waves Inside - Clear ocean. Orange blue pink. Liquid metal swells. Our very own Tantz made a newspost last week about the idea of “Heroes” who are really villains… or at least they're actually villains who think they're the hero, but come to realise that they aren't. Sometimes that makes them change their ways and they seek redemption, maybe even becoming a true hero. Sometimes they just lean into and embrace their true villain nature. There are many examples in stories: Disney's Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, Lord and Captain Flashheart in the Blackadder series, Zapp Brannigan from Futurama, Stan Smith in American Dad, even Ace Kinkaid in my comic Pinky TA. They're fun characters… It can make for more complex villains, nuanced heroes, or just subversion of audience expectation. A real life example came to me when I watched the nastiness of the Russian invasion unfold in Ukraine and realised that they used all the same justifications as our countries did for our invasions and occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. We're ALL “the baddies”, no one is immune from self delusion and self righteousness. This week on Episode 524 of Priority One: New York Comic Con is ready to Trek Out; the community rallies behind Wilson Cruz; Star Trek Online updates its minimum system requirements; mobile games cross to desktop; and we review Lower Decks' “Where Pleasant Fountains Lie”–but not before we chat with Cryptic Studios's Content Creator Ryon and Environment Artist Gianna! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Trekking Out the Big Apple By Elio Lleo Convention season is in full swing and New York Comic Con is next. Starting October 7th and ending October 10th, this four day event usually has stuff for everyone! Unique to this year's presentation is hybrid participation: not only are organizers reducing the total number of attendees, you can also purchase a virtual ticket that will give you access to some of the panels right from the comfort of your own home. But what's so special about NYCC? As of right now, Paramount+ is slated to present at least two panels: on Saturday, October 9th at 12:45pm the cast and producers of Star Trek: Discovery take the Empire Stage. Then on Sunday, October 10, Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere its first episode along with a panel. Image: ViacomCBS/Nickelodeon, via TrekCore. But that's not all–join the Roddenberry Podcast Network as we present a panel titled “Star Trek's Guide to Community.” I'll be there along with Kennedy and Sue from Women at Warp! That's happening Saturday, Oct 9th at 2:15pm. There's also a Hallmark presentation with new Trek ornaments, a virtual only panel with the folks behind the new Star Trek Magazine, and even Bill Shatner will be there on Thurs, October 7th.  Wilson Cruz Harassed During Star Trek Day By Elio Lleo When it comes to communities, even Star Trek's can be incredibly divisive. The majority of the time, it's about NuTrek vs older Trek, who the better first officer is, or which ship is cooler. However, there are times when things can get dark and people start to show their true colors–like one fan who was offered the privilege of attending the Star Trek Day celebrations in person. Long story short, at one point during the event, while Wilson Cruz was on stage, someone in the audience yield out a homophobic slur. According to reports, no one did anything about it. The guest was not removed nor have they been identified (yet). With incredible grace and patience, Wilson continued on and later took to Twitter to address the matter. https://twitter.com/wcruz73/status/1436333680880934927 Although he may not have wanted to draw so much attention to the matter, we want to take a moment to remind you–our listeners–that tolerance for the bigoted has its limits. When you see something, say something. Learn ways on how to be the best ally you can be for people who are marginalized on a daily basis. If you're on social media and someone goes on a hate-filled rant, step up. It's the inaction of those with the means to stand up to injustices that empower those who want to watch the world burn. [If you don't think this belongs in Trek, then there's the airlock. Help yourself.–Ed.] Image: ViacomCBS, via StarTrek.com IP Theft, the Sincerest Form of Flattery By Cat Hough On Monday, we were treated to the big uniform reveal by General Jay Raymond, Chief of Space Operations for Space Force who tweeted, "Every winning team needs a uniform!.I'm excited to share the new look with you today." And to no one's surprise, the Twitterverse immediately noticed some striking similarities to some other uniforms that we are quite familiar with. They were described by one person as "a blend of the Star Trek Enterprise dress uniform, but with the Mirror Universe diagonal."  https://twitter.com/SpaceForceCSO/status/1440323962697752590 [I am voluntarily putting this into my own shownotes for your edification, dear listener. You owe me.–Ed.] Josh Weinstein, a veteran writer for The Simpsons and Futurama, said the uniform reminded him of the ridiculously tight outfits worn by Zapp Brannigan; Movies in Focus hopped on the satirical bandwagon with the image of an Imperial Star Destroyer officer from the original Star Wars trilogy. "These new Space Force uniforms are looking great," jokes the caption. Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. Reuben Klamer, the designer of the original Starfleet phaser rifle for the original series of Star Trek, passed away at the age of 99, according to the Toy Association. Klamer also designed props for other shows, including a gun for the hit 1960s series The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  https://youtu.be/oWGNDoXG9R8 STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds PSA: She Canna Take Any More, Cap'ns! By Thomas Reynolds To every thing there is a season–and in Cryptic's opinion, the season for Windows 7 is long past. Starting February 15, 2022, anyone still using the 10-year-old OS (seriously, not even Microsoft supports it anymore) won't be able to patch or log into STO and Neverwinter. Only Windows 8 and 10 (with the superior 64-bit intellect) will have a home on the final frontier. DirectX 10 support is also getting ejected like a spent warp core on February 15th, with both games requiring Feature Level 11 or higher. That means your computer needs to have one of the following video card chipsets to play: NVidia GeForce GTX 400 or better ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5000 or better Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better Given all the fun and excitement of buying graphics cards these days, if your current card isn't up to the task...well, godspeed. [Pictured: my rig next February.–Ed.] Image: ViacomCBS, via KVNF Public Radio. Aux2Bat Gets Boimed Out By Thomas Reynolds The aqueduct, the magnetic compass, the Aux2Bat. All of these simple technologies have withstood the test of time, but the last may be the most miraculous. Needing only three Technician doffs and one boff ability at minimum, the Aux2Bat ship build is easy to assemble, trivial to fly, and still keeps your bridge officers ready for whatever space wizardry you demand of them. Sure, it hasn't been the meta in a sehlat's age, but you know what? Aux2Bat does the job, it does it pretty well, and that's pretty much all we ask...until now. Ever drop a Gravity Well, and notice your Tyken's Rift is now off-limits for 15 seconds? That's the Shared Category Cooldown kicking in, forcing you to pace yourself rather than let everything rip at once. When Cryptic first released the Boimler Effect trait, it provided a 2.5% percent chance of resetting every bridge officer ability to its Shared Category Cooldown, whenever you used a non-specialist boff ability. Great in theory, but one-in-forty odds just aren't worth a 200 Lobi investment. Yeah, that's was also our reaction. Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekZone.de So Cryptic did a little tweaking, like you do, and made it a 17.5% percent proc chance instead. As STO streamer @AugmentedDG declared on Twitter, “Boimler Effect is now as good as Aux2Bat...for cooldown reduction.” Bold words, to be sure, but there's also a fairly convincing clip of him keeping eight of his escort's twelve boff abilities concurrently running like an overambitious plate spinner. Trek out the tweet, scrape together that Lobi, and give your boffs more buffer time than they can handle. https://twitter.com/AugmentedDG/status/1438707179268284425 Is there in Screen Accuracy No Beauty? By Thomas Reynolds One of Trek cosplay's hallmarks is its hair-splitting fidelity to what's seen on screen, even when the creators themselves don't quite pull it off. Combine that tendency with STO's promise of personal immersion, and it's no surprise that some players want their captain's threads to look “correct.” To help make that a little easier, Cryptic released official in-game color guides for both the newly-available Lower Decks Starfleet jacket, and their original Khitomer uniform creation. However, rapturous Space Barbie enthusiasts should make sure they're using the second released Khitomer guide, as the first one had incorrect pant color codes. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1439020385572245509 The Sally Ride, the Ross, and You By Shane Hoover If you were a fan of the Star Trek Adventures web series “Shield of Tomorrow” or “Clear Skies”, you're already familiar with the dangers and wonders of the Shackleton Expanse. If you weren't, then be prepared for deadly spatial phenomena, ancient alien technologies, first contact with new species and lots of boldly going. It's all there in Modiphius Entertainment's newest STA sourcebook, the Shackleton Expanse Campaign Guide. The Ar-mod-a Returns By Thomas Reynolds Maybe 2000 feels like a long time ago to you, maybe it doesn't. Either way, the Star Trek: Armada and Armada II RTS games that came out then still hold a place in certain PC players' hearts. So much, in fact, that the Stellar Parallax modding group has finally released what Activision would not: Star Trek: Armada III. Starting as a one-person passion project back in 2012, Armada III is a full-conversion mod for 2012's Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. Stellar Parallax's devoted faithful can now command the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Borg, or Cardassian Union at the beginning of the Dominion War. See, Kurtzman? You can have more than one kind of ship in a fleet. Image: Stellar Parallax. But really, how much demand is there for a nine-year-old game mod, following up on a twenty-year-old series? After its September 10th release, Armada III is the 51st most-popular mod on the ModDB site, out of over 46,000 entries across hundreds of games–so we'd say “a lot.” [Update: #21 as of publication. The new sourcebook is available for preorder at $60 now and is expected to ship in December 2021. This is your tabletop gaming crew's chance to follow in the warp trails of the U.S.S. Sally Ride and the U.S.S. Ross. Adventure into a nearly uncharted region of space beyond Federation, Klingon and Romulan borders.  Image: Modiphius Entertainment. The new material includes five new playable alien species for STA including Orions. It also includes NPCs from Starbase 364 and around the Expanse, as well as stats for “hero” and NPC vessels. This sourcebook does require a copy of the Star Trek Adventures core rulebook, which is provided in PDF form with your order. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 We missed the episode that was supposed to come out on June 20th because I left my webcam plugged in and the audio didn't record right. We'll have episodes for the next two weeks and will be off on July 25th. Our podcast will come out on Saturdays for this episode and episode #96 and then we'll release on Sundays as usual. Chandra is watching Wimbledon. Players are falling and getting injured because the conditions on the court are so wet and slippery. Here are links to some videos of players slipping on the court. The organizers are just shrugging as players get injured as there's not much that can be done. Royals: Minutes 6:00 to 17:00 We finally got the fakakta statue unveiling. The stories in the lead-up to that showed a huge difference in William and Kate's PR, as we've been seeing for months. The narrative around Kate is that she's keeping the family together and soothing her angry husband. William's PR centers around him being the future king and being angry. Harry's PR has been masterful. We heard over the weekend that Kate wouldn't be at the statue unveiling and that the royal rota wouldn't be there either. They tried to blame Harry for Kate not coming, but it was clearly William's call. There was a crazy story about how Carole Middleton is William's “second mum”. It was really obnoxious and obvious in the lead-up to the unveiling of the Diana statue. I mention the story about the Cambridges looking for property and schools near her family. I play a segment from Zoom where Karen, Zakia, Sara and Ameerah talk about the lead up to the statue unveiling. Chandra and I think the statue is ok but it's not great. Prince Harry looked relaxed and confident at the unveiling, and William looked decent, for him. He didn't look angry for once, maybe because Kate wasn't there. Britney Spears: Minutes 17:00 to 24:00 We finally heard directly from Britney Spears after 13 years. She testified in her conservatorship case and her situation is much worse than a lot of us imagined. The worst part is that she said she has an IUD that she'd like to have removed so she can have more children, but her conservators won't let her. Britney also described being put on lithium and being institutionalized for four months as punishment for leaving her Las Vegas residency. The official story from Britney's father was that her medication needed to be adjusted. Britney also stated that she had only just learned that she could petition to have her conservatorship lifted, which raises questions about the competency of her court appointed lawyer. A request to have Jamie Spears removed as co-conservator was just denied. Many people have compared Britney's situation with Kanye's situation. The differences between how they were treated is striking. Britney hasn't had autonomy in so long despite not having any issues in years. Comments of The Week: Minutes 24:00 to My comment of the week is from Girl Ninja on the about Kristen Bell saying that she and her husband, Dax Shepard, do therapy separately now. Chandra's comment of the week is from Zapp Brannigan on the story that claims Prince Philip would have wanted Countess Sophie to seek the spotlight. Thanks for listening bitches!

Intro: Minutes 0 to 4:15 We intended on taking the entire month of January off from the podcast but due to Sussexit we’ve changed our plans. We’ll have two episodes in January and two in February instead. I’m moving in February and will need a little time off for that and the Oscars. We will have another podcast for you next week and are planning on coming back on February 3rd and February 24th. Please check out our revised calendar. Note that this episode was released on Sunday due to the Critics Choice Awards coming out that night. We’ll also release on Sunday next week but should return to our regular Monday morning release time for our two episodes in February. My gym has been really crowded due to the new people at the beginning of the year. Both Chandra and I try to avoid the most crowded times at the gym and store. Sussexit intro: Minutes 4:15 to 5:20 Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan announced in the afternoon US time last Wednesday that they’re stepping down as senior royals. We think the timing was designed to give preference to the US outlets as it was already evening in the UK and the British press had to play catch up. At the same time, they launched their new website SussexRoyal.com, with a detailed outline of their plans. We talk more about that a little later. Harry and Meghan’s timing: Minutes 5:20 to 8:00 The Sussexes took six weeks off over the holidays and we didn’t know where they were at first but then heard they were in Canada. Chandra believes the stories that William exposed their location because his go-to reporter, Rebecca English, broke the news. We didn’t see them but did get a new photo of Archie and Harry which they released in an end of year video. They were seen by photographers for the first time in six weeks outside Canada house in London on January 7th, the day before their announcement. Meghan and Harry looked so happy and united, and Meghan was glowing! That was the look of a woman who was winning. Chandra said that this was their going away photoshoot and that they knew everyone would use them with the news stories which were about to break. I bring up the last photos of Katie Holmes with Tom Cruise looking triumphant right before she divorced him when she had seemed really depressed right before that. Chandra remembers how often Katie was photographed alone prior to that and how over the marriage Nicole Kidman looked in her final months with Tom. I’ve included all those photos below, I had fun looking them up! I was wrong about the timeline on the Katie Holmes photos though. She looked amazing at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in February and filed for divorce in June. It’s likely her plan was underway at that time though. Meghan is a superb planner: Minutes 8:00 to 11:00 Chandra explains what a next-level planner and game theorist Meghan is, especially in light of how expertly she mapped out that letter to her father, knowing he would sell it to the media and she could eventually sue. She used a similar strategy here. It’s possible that Harry and Meghan weren’t ready to make the announcement but that they did it knowing that it was about to leak. They had it all set up expertly. We heard that the Queen was caught off guard and William was “incandescent with rage,” but then additional stories revealed that Harry and Meghan were trying to work out the details with the royal family behind the scenes and were given the runaround. By making their plans public, the Sussexes have outplayed the Queen, who will look awful if she takes away their royal titles, especially since her Prince Andrew retains his. The “Royal Rota” and the press: Minutes 11:00 to 15:30 We didn’t know that the Royal Rota was an official thing and just assumed that all outlets in the press corps have equal access, but the Sussexes lay this out on their new website. It’s official that certain publications get first access to the royals. These are the same outlets which have been trashing Meghan and Harry. By exposing them, they’re implying that the leaks and smears are coming from royal sources. Chandra thinks it’s quite obvious payback. The Queen and senior royals are scrambling to come up with a solution now that all of this is public. The Sussexes’ finances: Minutes 15:30 to 23 The financial section of SussexRoyal is confusing. They said they get 95% of their funding from The Duchy of Cornwall or Prince Charles and 5% of their funding from the Sovereign Grant, or The Queen. They will be giving up the Sovereign Grant and Chandra explains that whether they’ll keep their funding from Charles depends on a few factors which are yet to be determined. It likely won’t matter if they’re senior royals, but it will be matter if they’re still designated working royals, if they get to keep their HRH designation and whether they keep their titles. They have so many options to make money, like Netflix and book deals. They have a lot of support here in the US. Chandra mentions the “good sis Meghan” tweets and I read tweets by Elizabeth Kidd and Eve Ettinger. Comments of the Week: Minutes 23 to 23 My comments of the week were from smcollins and My3cents on the post with Gwyneth Paltrow’s awful dress at the Golden Globes. Chandra’s comment of the week was from Zapp Brannigan on the post about Kensington Palace’s happy birthday message to Duchess Kate. Thanks for listening bitches! Intro: Minutes 0 to 11:00 This is our last episode until February 3rd and we’re sorry! We need a break for the holidays and all the awards shows which are coming out in January! On February 11th, the day after the Oscars, we’ll have a filler episode, but we’ll be back all of February and into the spring. Last week was tough for us and it feels like it the holidays came super fast this year. I just saw A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood, which wasn’t what I was expecting but I loved it. Chandra loved Won’t You Be My Neighbor, last year’s documentary about Mr. Rogers which got snubbed at the Oscars. I also really am enjoying The Mandalorian, which is better than I expected. I’m about halfway through The Irishman. I like it ok but it’s really long. Chandra is watching Dublin Murders, which my mom loves too. They have similar taste in shows. She’s also watching Prodigal Son, which is stupid but she likes police procedurals so she’s sticking with it. You can listen below! Justin Timberlake apologized to Jessica Biel: Minutes 11:00 to 15:20 Justin Timberlake issued a public apology to Jessica Biel two weeks after he was photographed holding hands with his costar, Alisha Wainwright. That was on November 22 and on December 5th he wrote a long message to Instagram saying sorry. Then we heard that Jessica told Justin to apologize. After that we got a story in People with sourced quotes like “Jessica believes he didn’t cheat on her,” and “She’ll never break up her family over something like this.” We totally forgot about that story before the apology because it wasn’t surprising at all if Justin cheated on Jessica. There were so many rumors that he stepped out on her before they got married. We remember Justin and Jessica’s People Magazine cover for their wedding and his Instagram post for her pregnancy, which were all about Justin. Royals: Minutes 15:20 to 18:30 About a month ago, in Episode 36, we talked about the fact that Princess Beatrice hadn’t set a wedding date yet. That’s still true. She got engaged at the end of September and she’s having an engagement party this week, but the venue and date have changed. There’s still no word on the date for her wedding, which won’t have a carriage ride and will be low key due to her father ruining everything for her. Chandra mentions that it’s unusual for royals not to set a date this late. Duchess Kate went to a diplomatic reception in velvet McQueen. She was wearing a giant tiara with her hair up and had a giant diamond statement necklace and earrings. It was so classic and gorgeous. I was seriously jealous and just want to know what it’s like to wear that many diamonds. Chandra thought the shoulders of that dress looked perfect and balanced perfectly with her accessories. Golden Globe and SAG Nominations: Minutes 18:30 to 24:00 This week the Golden Globe and SAG Nominations came out, with lots of love for The Irishman, Marriage Story and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which could end up the safe pick for Oscar voters. People love the Korean film Parasite, which is only the second foreign language movie to be nominated for best ensemble at SAGs. Game of Thrones got shut out at the Globes except for a nomination for Kit Harington, but they did get a best ensemble nomination at SAGs. Irishman is not that interesting to me as it runs really long and Chandra mentions that, like Ford vs. Ferrari, it’s a dad movie in that it’s easy for guys to watch, it’s about gangsters and has all their favorite actors in it. I mention the criticism of Marriage Story that it’s like every acting class where students have to yell at each other. Chandra brings up the whitewashing of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s relationship, which likely started when Noah was married to Jennifer Jason Leigh. Lizzo showed her ass and made it about empowerment: Minutes 24:00 to 27:50 Lizzo was courtside at the Lakers vs. Timberwolves game in LA. She wore a dress with the ass cut out and she had on fishnets and a thong underneath. Then she twerked in that dress to her song Juice when the Laker Girls were performing to it. In response she recorded a video to her stories in which she tried to make it about empowerment. Chandra thinks both things can be true, it can be body positive and that Lizzo has every right to have her ass hanging out, but that it’s over the top too. Lizzo’s response is similar to Lena Dunham in that she’s manufacturing controversy so that she can act indignant and issue a statement about it. Chandra thinks there’s somewhat of a backlash against Lizzo. User Feedback: Minutes 27:50 to 28:40 Last week I said that Toni was our first binge listener, but I totally forgot that Rose told us she was binge listening months ago. I’m sorry Rose! Also Clumsyme said we were her number one podcast this year which is surprising, but we’ll take it! Comments of The Week: Minutes 28:40 to My comment of the week is from Darla on the post about Kanye wearing a silver bodysuit and silver paint for a performance at Art Basel. Chandra’s comments of the week are from Zapp Brannigan and Lala11_7 on the blind item and Greta Gerwig posts. Thanks for listening bitches and have a great holiday!

Intro: Chandra’s mom: Minutes 0 to :30 Chandra’s mom is doing better and is being moved into a facility where she can receive physical therapy. Chandra took care of some tricky insurance issues and her mom should be fully covered. Candace Bushnell and our aging parents: Minutes :30 to 8 Candace Bushnell decided to move to the Hamptons with her friends, which makes Chandra think about her mom’s preparations for retirement. We talk about caring for our aging parents. My parents moved away a year ago and I miss them so much. Chandra cared for her father in his later years and doesn’t want to be in a similar situation with her mom. We conclude it’s a PITA either way. Candace also talked about turning 50 and how it feels like you’re erased. We compare this to Gwyneth Paltrow’s perspective that she’s no longer the hot young thing. Duchess Meghan guest edited British Vogue and has another charity project: Minutes 8 to 19 We wonder why British Vogue released so many exclusive stories around Duchess Meghan’s guest edit of the September issue within a 24 hour news period. We both found Meghan’s writing tedious and too self-referential. This is our job so we have a different perspective on it and more experience of course. (For the record I did use the word “nestled” in a story once in 2011, however I was mirroring another description and didn’t come up with the word on my own.) Meghan did a capsule collection to benefit her patronage Smart Works, which provides interview training and wardrobes for women returning to the workforce. This was a clever and practical way to benefit this charity. Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes did a PDA-filled Miami pool photoshoot: Minutes 19 to 22 Camila Cabello, 22, and Shawn Mendes, 20, have been linked since they did the Senorita video in late June. We heard around the time it dropped that Camila had split with her boyfriend of about a year. In mid July there was a weird video of Camila and Shawn making out at a diner and they just did an old school Miami pool photoshoot where they’re kissing and hugging on each other. So many outlets had those photos, they’re not exclusives at all meaning that plenty of photographers were there and they’re so much fun. It really looks like a PR rollout but it’s fun. Frankenfood treats: Minutes 22 to 25:30 We discuss two new frankenfood treats, pumpkin pie Kit Kat and French’s mustard ice cream. Our old white chocolate feud gets reignited and Chandra is disgusted that I’ll try the pumpkin pie Kit Kats. I love mustard and defend good mustards. We can’t try the mustard ice cream as it’s only available in limited locations. User Questions: Minutes 25:30 to 28 Our user question is from CT on Twitter who asked us about our favorite celebrity feud. Chandra says there are a lot of depressing divorce feuds and her favorite fun feud is Taylor Swift vs. Kim Kardashian. She also like Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus and fondly remembers the Kristen Stewart scandal. Comments of The Week: Minutes 28 to 30 My comment of the week is from Sleanne on a post about Eva Longoria’s sister, who has an intellectual disability. Sleanne works in a residential home and wrote about her experiences there. Chandra’s COTW is Zapp Brannigan on the Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes post. Thanks for listening bitches!

WOW!!! We have an amazing episode for you this week, first up, thank you to our 1000 weekly listeners, you are amazing. At last, winter is here, and Professor and Buck are both totally enjoying it. DJ has brought us the controversy of the week, with wild claims of a new Indiana Jones, and the boys pile in on him. Once again we solve the world’s greatest issues with logic and careful consideration. We decide Chris Pratt is not suitable for taking on the role and also convince DJ that Indiana Jones is not a Marvel character yet; give Disney time and they will make it happen eventually I’m sure. With a fabulous Segway into the next topic we look at Digit. Not the figures, the robot that will help deliver your shopping from the car to your door. Professor decides he wants one to carry the shopping from the door to the kitchen and then cook his food. DJ calls robots slaves, revealing his desire to take over the world. Buck and Professor decide that given the way technology has been moving they wish to become Cyborgs and serve the robot overlords. We align the killer drones, self-replicating robots, driverless cars and robot dogs.Moving along before we get into too much trouble. We have a new CPU that is pushing the limits and is looks surprised at how amazing it is. AMD is back baby and challenging Intel once again. Buck and Professor fully geek out over what this means for building your own system. If you get confused and lost please let us know; we will get Professor to write up a translation for you. We also figure out how to turn your computer into an oven. We mean literally you will be able to cook your sausages and toast your marsh mellows. As always we make fun of everything, have a laugh with each other, at each other and life in general. We have the usual shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. As always, take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated. Well hello once again, once again those Nerds have given us another episode full of fun and laughter, so strap in and hang on tight as we enjoy the rid. Please remember to keep arms inside the ride at all times to avoid injury. To start this mad cap episode we have the cast list of the new Dr. Dolittle with Robert Downey Jr. This cast has almost as many stars as the US flag. Will this be just another remake of a great movie, or will it be great? Who knows, at present all we know for sure is the cast is pretty impressive. Next up we take a moment to discuss the presence of water on the moon. That’s right water on the moon, is it H2O or OH, is there enough for a pool to soak away the long dreary hours after working all day as a janitor. Oops, that was the story for Space Quest, sorry. But the presence of water is important to plans to build a moon base for further space exploration. Last topic is about Crazy Taxi and not horrifying us with gruesome violence like the horror movie right there on our TV, called the 6 o’clock news. Sorry, distracted again, but hey, it is an amazing line up to entertain you and is followed by the usual shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and events of interest. As always we would love to hear from you, and please remember to take care of each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Dr Dolittle Movie starring Robert Downey Jr - http://collider.com/robert-downey-jr-doctor-dolittle-movie-reshoots/Moon Water - https://phys.org/news/2019-04-meteoroid-eject-precious-moon.html- https://www.newscientist.com/article/2199618-there-is-water-just-under-the-surface-of-the-moon-that-we-could-use/Crazy Taxi patent expiration - https://patents.google.com/patent/US6200138B1/enGames currently playingProfessor– Age of Empire 2 HD - https://store.steampowered.com/app/221380/Age_of_Empires_II_HD/Buck– Car Simulator 2016 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/car-mechanic-simulator-2016/9nblggh4t4c4DJ– Apex Legends - https://www.ea.com/games/apex-legendsOther topics discussedThe Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (2020 movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Voyage_of_Doctor_DolittleKnut the Polar Bear- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knut_(polar_bear)Inuka the Polar Bear- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InukaSelena Gomez bio- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selena_GomezThe Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922 novel)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Voyages_of_Doctor_DolittleThe Futurist (Robert Downey Jr. album)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Futurist_(Robert_Downey_Jr._album)Craig Robinson (actor)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Robinson_(actor)Pineapple Express (2008 movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineapple_Express_(film)Puss in Boots- https://shrek.fandom.com/wiki/Puss_in_BootsTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014 film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_(2014_film)LADEE - Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LADEELCROSS - Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCROSSNASA's strike on moon worked- http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/space/10/09/probe.moon.crash/index.htmlWater on Titan?- https://www.astrobio.net/news-exclusive/a-water-ocean-on-titan/Moon (2009 film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_(film)Aniara (1956 poem)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AniaraSpace: 1999 (1975 TV Series)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space:_1999Bottle Waters of the World- http://www.finewaters.com/bottled-waters-of-the-world/japanDriver : San Franciso- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driver:_San_FranciscoKylie Minogue Darling Perfume- https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Kylie-Minogue/Darling-842.htmlLoading screen mini games- https://www.kotaku.com.au/2015/11/the-patent-on-loading-screen-mini-games-is-about-to-expire/Patent - https://patents.google.com/patent/US5718632Midtown Madness (1999 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midtown_MadnessMidnight Club (racing series)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_ClubMidnight Club 3: Dub Edition- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_Club_3:_Dub_EditionAssassin’s Creed Unity free giveaway- https://www.gamesradar.com/au/ubisoft-is-giving-away-assassins-creed-unity-for-free-as-a-nod-to-the-notre-dame-cathedral/My Summer Car (game)- https://store.steampowered.com/app/516750/My_Summer_Car/Days Gone motorcycle upgrade- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP5OjNq_CfsEVA-8 Auto (Apex Legends Gun)- https://apexlegends.gamepedia.com/EVA-8_AutoAl-Aqsa Mosque on fire same time as Notre Dame- https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/small-fire-broke-out-jerusalems-al-aqsa-mosque-flames-ravaged-notre-dame-180971983/Monty Python's Life of Brian- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Python%27s_Life_of_Brian3D Printed heart using patient cells- https://www.gannett-cdn.com/presto/2019/04/15/USAT/903d849a-04cb-4171-b786-4cd7e60fcf8a-AFP_AFP_1FN7BD.JPG?crop=5471,3077,x0,y566&width=3200&height=1680&fit=boundsLive Animal in keychains- http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/04/14/china.animal.keyring/index.htmlMel Blanc (voice actor)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_BlancPeppermint (2018 movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppermint_(2018_film)Ronin (1998 film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronin_(film)Operation Desert Shield also known as The Gulf War- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_WarElvis Lives! Wolfe is best known for his Book of the New Sun series (four volumes, 1980–83), the first part of his "Solar Cycle". He died of cardiovascular disease at 87 in Peoria, Illinois - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Wolfe15 Apr 2019 - Winston L. Shelton, American inventor, electrical engineer and entrepreneur who was awarded 76 US patents as an individual or as part of a team, as well as many corresponding patents. Shelton's patents have had an impact relating to home washing machines and the preparation of food in both the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry and fine dining. Technologies Shelton developed while an engineer at General Electric are still in use after more than fifty years. His patent for the modern "Washing Machine" (US 3257830 A), licensed in 1965 to General Electric has been referenced in over 40 subsequent patents.
