Chosen by Maff, directed and co-written by Sammo Hung, Wheels on Meals was a Hong Kong–Spanish co-production from Golden Harvest and Laurenfilm, filmed extensively on location around Barcelona and Tarragona. Reliable published budget figures are difficult to verify, but the international production gave the film a distinctive scale and sun-drenched European setting rarely seen in Hong Kong action cinema at the time. Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung reunited as the leading trio, supported by Spanish actress Lola Forner and American martial artists Benny “The Jet” Urquidez and Keith Vitali.Released in Hong Kong on 17 August 1984, the film became one of the territory's highest-grossing local releases of the year. Its combination of acrobatic stunt work, broad comedy and carefully staged martial-arts action helped establish it as a favourite of the VHS generation. Decades later, Wheels on Meals remains celebrated for the chemistry between its three stars and for delivering fight choreography clearly enough that viewers can actually see what is happening—an increasingly revolutionary concept.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn the sun-soaked streets of Barcelona, two cousins have the perfect business: fast food, four wheels and absolutely no regard for workplace health and safety. But when a mysterious young pickpocket crosses their path, Thomas and David are dragged into a dangerous plot involving ruthless criminals, a missing inheritance and one remarkably questionable private detective. This time, the meals are fast. The fists are faster. And somewhere in Spain, an insurance company is quietly refusing to cover any of it.FUN FACTSThe film's original English title was reportedly Meals on Wheels, but Golden Harvest reversed the words after two previous company releases beginning with the letter “M” performed poorly. In Japan, the film was released under the title Spartan X.Jackie Chan also supervised the film's action choreography.Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao had all trained together as members of the Seven Little Fortunes at the China Drama Academy.Lola Forner had previously represented Spain at the Miss World competition.Benny Urquidez was a highly successful professional kickboxer nicknamed “The Jet.”Chan and Urquidez's confrontation is frequently ranked by martial-arts cinema fans among Jackie Chan's finest screen fights.Keith Vitali reportedly struck Jackie Chan in the throat accidentally while filming one of their fight sequences. The catering van used by Thomas and David is fitted with hidden compartments, electronic gadgets and enough custom equipment to make it the kung-fu equivalent of the Batmobile. The three leading men later reunited for another major Hong Kong action comedy, Dragons Forever, released in 1988.SUPPORT THE SHOW If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here. A Note from James:This is a very special episode for me.There have only been a few times in the history of this podcast when I've had the chance to sit down with one of my heroes. This is one of those times.Frank Miller is one of the most important storytellers of my life. When I first picked up Batman: The Dark Knight Returns in 1986, it completely changed what I thought comics could be. This wasn't just another Batman story. It was a revolution. Frank took Batman out of the colorful, campy world I grew up with and turned him into something darker, mythic, terrifying, and psychologically real. There is a comic book industry before The Dark Knight Returns, and there is a comic book industry after The Dark Knight Returns. Every Batman movie since then carries Frank's fingerprints in some way. But it wasn't just Batman. Frank changed Daredevil. He created Ronin. He created Sin City. He showed that comics could handle adult stories, painful arcs, crime, tragedy, mythology, obsession, and moral ambiguity. But what matters most to me is that Frank is a master storyteller. And I love storytelling. Whether it's books, podcasts, articles, comics, or just how we make sense of our lives, story is everything. So getting to sit down with Frank Miller and talk about Batman, myth, creativity, mentorship, discipline, and his new book, Push the Wall: My Life, Writing, Drawing, and the Art of Storytelling, was a dream come true. This was my first in-person podcast in years. Jay drove up from Atlanta. I flew into the city. And yes, I brought my copy of The Dark Knight Returns for Frank to sign.Episode Description:Frank Miller didn't just write and draw some of the most influential comics of the modern era. He changed the grammar of comics. In this conversation, James sits down with Miller to talk about Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil, Ronin, Sin City, and Miller's new book, Push the Wall. The conversation begins with Batman, but quickly becomes a larger discussion about how characters become myths. For Miller, Batman was never just a rich detective in a costume. The material was already there from the beginning: a child witnessing the murder of his parents, growing up without powers, building himself into a force through discipline, intelligence, and obsession. Miller's goal was to pull that core truth out and make Batman stand beside older pulp and mythic figures like Zorro, The Shadow, and the hard-edged heroes of crime cinema.James and Frank also talk about how myths are built around simple central values. Superman is hope. Batman is justice, vengeance, effort, and fear. The art is not in making those ideas complicated. The art is in placing them inside a human context so they feel emotionally true. The discussion moves into the craft of comics itself: page layouts, panel borders, visual rhythm, and how the pictures carry most of the story. Miller reflects on the influence of Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, Denny O'Neil, Japanese samurai films, martial arts movies, Greek tragedy, Jean Giraud/Moebius, Lone Wolf and Cub, and the creative power of combining worlds that do not obviously belong together. They also talk about mentorship. Miller describes calling Neal Adams from the phone book, bringing him drawings, and enduring brutally honest criticism. That toughness, he says, was part of the training. To survive as an artist, you need egoism without egotism: enough belief to keep coming back, but enough humility to keep learning. The episode closes with practical advice for young artists today: go to conventions, build the strongest portfolio you can, seek out hard criticism, don't chase only the biggest titles, protect your original ideas, and look for “losers” you can make great. What You'll Learn:Why Frank Miller wanted Batman to become a myth, not just another superhero. How The Dark Knight Returns helped move comics toward darker, more adult storytelling. Why Batman's lack of superpowers is exactly what makes him compelling. How mythic characters are built around simple core themes like hope, vengeance, justice, or discipline. Why comics are not just written stories with pictures, but a visual storytelling machine. How Miller learned from Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, Denny O'Neil, samurai films, noir, Greek tragedy, and European comics. Why creativity often comes from combining unrelated influences. What Miller means by “egoism, but not egotism.”Why young artists should seek out hard lessons instead of easy praise. How to enter comics today without giving away original work too early. Why determination, stamina, and a lack of Plan B shaped Miller's career. What Miller is working on next, including a new Western-style Sin City story.Timestamped Chapters:[03:41] Meeting Frank MillerJames begins by holding up Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and asking what it means to be known through one defining work.[04:00] Before and After The Dark Knight ReturnsWhy James sees Miller's Batman as a dividing line in comic book history.[05:07] Turning Batman Into a Psychological ConditionJames asks how Miller transformed Batman from a campy hero into something darker, mythic, and terrifying.[05:49] Batman as MythFrank explains that his first impulse was to make Batman stand with figures like The Shadow, Zorro, and the hard-edged heroes of crime cinema.[06:37] Pulling Comics Out of ChildhoodMiller describes his desire to push comics into adolescence and beyond the conventions of disposable monthly stories.[06:59] The Origin Was Always ThereWhy Batman's trauma, lack of powers, and self-made discipline were already embedded in the character from the beginning.[07:50] Superman Descends, Batman RisesFrank contrasts Superman as a figure of light with Batman as something that comes up from the darkness.[08:44] What Makes a Character Mythic?Miller explains that great characters usually have a simple central theme: hope, justice, vengeance, effort, or fear.[10:30] King Arthur, Luke Skywalker, and the Power of ObjectsThe conversation turns to swords, lightsabers, utility belts, and how mythic symbols carry stories across generations.[11:54] Breaking the PageJames and Frank discuss how Kirby, Neal Adams, and others shattered conventional panel layouts before Miller pushed those techniques further.[12:35] A Tradition of RevolutionFrank explains why creativity means breaking a few eggs while still working inside a lineage.[13:00] When the Page Tells the StoryHow panel size, shape, and visual composition can carry emotional meaning without words.[14:10] What Would Frank Do With Batman Now?Miller says the point is not to reinvent Batman for novelty's sake, but to find a good story.[15:00] Moving Daredevil Into Hell's KitchenJames asks how Miller brought his own New York experience into Daredevil's world.[15:45] Fear, Editors, and Media ConglomeratesFrank reflects on how creative fear moves through artists, editors, bosses, and corporate structures.[16:17] Are New Comic Stories Still Possible?Miller argues that the talent and creative energy are still there, even if it does not always come from predictable places.[17:40] How Comics Survived Their Own DeathsFrank traces comic books from the attacks of the 1950s to Marvel, underground comics, and the direct market.[19:30] What Young Artists Need TodayWhen James asks what skill matters beyond drawing and storytelling, Miller answers: determination.[20:01] No Plan BFrank explains that he never had a concept of failure because comics were what he had wanted to do since his earliest memories.[20:47] Writing vs. StorytellingWhy, in comics, most of the storytelling happens in the pictures.[21:00] Neal Adams and the Hard LessonsMiller remembers calling Neal Adams from the phone book and receiving tough critiques that tested his character.[22:34] Egoism, Not EgotismFrank explains the balance an artist needs: enough ego to return after criticism, but not so much that they stop learning.[22:51] Stealing From the GreatsWhy artists must study and learn from earlier practitioners rather than pretending genius arrives fully formed.[23:47] Batman Is Possessed, Not ObsessedFrank corrects James's description of Batman and explains that Batman is filled with an eternal force.[24:50] Daredevil, Samurai, Crime, and Greek TragedyHow Miller fused martial arts films, ninja stories, crime movies, and Greek tragedy into his Daredevil run.[27:01] Stick, Elektra, and the Sensei ArchetypeJames and Frank trace the mentor-student relationship through Daredevil, samurai stories, and mythic training narratives.[27:47] Lone Wolf and Cub, Moebius, and RoninHow Forbidden Planet exposed Miller to Japanese and European comics, leading to the hybrid world of Ronin.[28:35] The Power of IntersectionsWhy combining Westerns, samurai stories, science fiction, noir, and mythology can create something new.[30:08] Discipline vs. ChaosJames identifies a recurring theme in Miller's work: taking chaos and molding it into purpose.[30:40] Batman Becomes the FatherFrank explains the final image of The Dark Knight Returns: the orphan becoming the father.[31:24] Why So Many Heroes Are OrphansMiller says the lone child against the elements is at the heart of heroic storytelling.[32:36] Guilt, Control, and Batman's Unhealed WoundJames and Frank discuss whether Batman is driven by guilt or by the need to take control after childhood trauma.[33:43] Pushing Batman to the ExtremeWhy Miller made the Batmobile a tank and amplified the character's core qualities.[33:50] How Frank Would Start TodayMiller advises young artists to attend conventions, show their work, use the internet, and seek honest feedback.[34:36] Seek Hard CriticismWhy young creators should avoid people who only make them feel good.[34:59] Don't Chase the Biggest TitlesMiller advises artists to look for overlooked characters—or better yet, create something themselves.[35:21] Find a Loser and Do It RightA practical creative strategy: identify something bad, understand why it fails, and build the better version.[35:41] Gatekeepers and New AvenuesFrank weighs the traditional obstacles against new channels for artists to get discovered.[36:27] Protect Your Original IdeasWhy young artists should be careful about handing over original material too early.[37:00] Humility, Listening, and Surviving the BusinessMiller adds that determination must be paired with humility and a willingness to learn how the industry works.[37:58] Batman at 55—and What Comes NextJames reflects on Batman's age in The Dark Knight Returns, and Frank jokes that next time Batman may be 80.[38:36] A New Western Sin CityFrank talks about working on a new Sin City story with a Western angle.[38:52] Push the Wall and the Art of CreativityJames closes by describing Miller's new book as a guide to creativity and inspiration.[39:20] A Dream Interview Comes Full CircleJames thanks Frank, explains the personal significance of the episode, and As F1 scrambles for a quick fix to their 2026 cars, Formula E's about to throw a party!Climb the ladder with me on Patreon: https://patreon.com/lawvsIt's clear that Formula 1 in 2026 isn't quite sure what it wants to be, after massive consumer backlash and concerns from its own drivers. Meetings are being held to figure out how to pivot away from the 50-50 split in due course, back to more focus on the combustion engine. How long will take take? It depends on the manufacturers like Mercedes, Ferrari and Audi and Honda. On the other side, Formula E is about to release is fourth-generation machine to the world around Paul Ricard. After over a decade of development, THIS is the ultimate electric racing car...and it looks amazing. And oh yes! Its speeds are getting ever closer to F1. I would call this an embarassing moment form Formula One...and maybe a sign of moving away from electrification; so as to have two premium single seater motorsports under FIA governance.F1's being EMBARRASED by the Batmobilehttps://youtu.be/ffn8cxL5gxI#f1 #formula1 #formulae #f12026 #gen4 #formula12026 #formulaerace #f1news #f1latest #f1updates #f1cars #f1car #f1gossip #f1drama Get 15% off at the Castore Official website with my special link: https://glnk.io/ryj2p/lawrence #AdCastoreAff Hosted on Acast. Travels With Randy Route 66 Episode 13 is here! Missouri, Joplin To Springfield Route 66 Missouri Trip Discussion Bubba and Randy discussed Randy's recent Route 66 trip through Missouri, focusing on the section from Joplin to Springfield. They covered the challenges of navigating different route alignments and the unique attractions along the way, including a stop at Gay Parita in Missouri. Randy explained that Joplin has become more of a tourist trap over time, with Route 66 originally passing through downtown rather than the newer attractions. Route 66 Decommissioning History Randy and Bubba discussed the history of Route 66, focusing on how different states decommissioned parts of the route before national decommissioning in the 1980s. Beth clarified that Missouri's segment was reduced towards Springfield rather than as far west as Joplin, and that California's segment was one of the last to be decommissioned. The conversation highlighted how Route 66's significance declined over time due to factors like the Great Depression, World War II, and the rise of interstates, though efforts continue to preserve its cultural heritage. Route 66 Trip Highlights Randy shared details about his Route 66 trip, highlighting notable stops including Boots Court in Carthage, which has been renovated and serves as a popular accommodation for travelers. He discussed Spencer, Missouri, where someone purchased the entire town for restoration, and mentioned visiting other towns like Webb City and Carterville, which have mining history and unique landmarks like the Miner's Bank building from 1907. Randy noted he missed some interior photos during the initial trip and planned to return in the fall for more comprehensive documentation. Route 66 Historic Gas Station Randy shared photos of Route 66 drive-ins and discussed visiting a historic Sinclair gas station in Perida, Missouri, which has been family-owned for over 60 years. He interviewed George, who runs the station with his wife Barbara, learning that the property originally operated as a cattle ranch before becoming a gas station in 1926. The conversation highlighted the challenges of preserving historic Route 66 sites, with many towns along this "ghost stretch" of the highway now having minimal remaining landmarks. Route 66 Travel Experience Randy shared details about his recent Route 66 visit, including a stop at Gay Parita in Parita, Missouri, where he met a local character named George. He discussed the Route 66 Auto Museum in Springfield, which featured notable vehicles like the Batmobile and Ghostbusters ambulance. Randy also provided advice about navigating Route 66, suggesting that travelers follow multiple signs and explore different alignments to avoid missing attractions. Route 66 Travel Plans Discussion Randy discussed his upcoming travel plans, including visiting a car museum and exploring Springfield, Missouri, which is the birthplace of Route 66. They shared details about Springfield's historical sites, including an old barbershop and a museum dedicated to Route 66, as well as recommendations for dining at the College Street Cafe. Randy also noted the well-maintained condition of infrastructure in Missouri and Oklahoma compared to other states along Route 66. Route 66 Travel Discussion Randy and Bubba discussed Randy's recent Route 66 travel experiences, including visits to Uranus Fudge Factory and Merrimack Caverns in Missouri. He highlighted the inconsistent signage along Route 66 across different states, noting Missouri's unique blue historical Route 66 signs. The conversation also touched on the history of Steak and Shake, founded in Springfield, and the challenges of engaging with people who deny established scientific facts about space exploration. The conversation ended with plans for Randy to share photos from Springfield and the upcoming stretch to St. Louis, and he discussed an upcoming product launch related to Route 66 history. SO. MANY. Jeff Dunham is back and joins Adam for a wide-ranging conversation. They talk about how their careers have far exceeded their expectations and Jeff describes showing up to Los Angeles with 4,000 dollars and a trunk full of dummies. They then dive into Adam's recent phone call with Jerry Seinfeld about their viral “We Might Be Drunk” clips and then they follow that up with some old-fashioned car talk. They finish by talking about their old late night appearances. This was a blast. We kick off this show with a question about our favorite TV and movie cars which really takes us down a rabbit hole. Ray nominates a local hero for turning him onto the great service department at the McGard wheel lock company. Ture pressure inconsistencies and a cracked windshield repair made by Chris round out this hour of programming. On Instagram: @real_motormouthradio and on You Tube: https://youtu.be/hQC94PzTgfkSpreaker: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/mmr-02-15-2026--70071144
A countdown, a cheer, and then a white bloom in the sky. We start with that January morning when Challenger lifted off with a teacher aboard and a nation watching, and we unpack how a routine launch became a rupture—O-rings, cold air, and the way live TV freezes time. The story isn't just technical; it's personal. Sneaking a screen at work, bargaining for a miracle, and remembering how hope hangs on for a few impossible seconds. From there, we follow the thread of wonder into a brighter palette.Cue the Batman theme. Adam West's deadpan responses and the pulpy poetry of Bam and Pow show how camp can be both silly and exacting. We dig into the Batmobile's improbable lineage—from the 1955 Lincoln Futura. Then it's a crate-dig through the Beach Boys Party album, where Barbara Ann's singalong charm and Dean Torrance's cameo capture a band between eras, loose and luminous before Pet Sounds. We jump to Elton John's Your Song and the city-streaked cinema of Dire Straits' Skateaway—drums, Roy Bittan's piano, and a roller girl writing her own movie. We also get candid about taste with Blondie's shift to The Tide Is High and Rapture. Finally, the volume tilts toward Public Image Ltd.'s Rise and the notorious Album project. “May the road rise with you” meets “anger is an energy,” a split-screen of blessing and bite, wrapped in no-frills packaging that turned the grocery aisle into a design joke.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. Junk Food Dinner returns for our annual holiday celebration and this year we're feeling particularly nostalgic! Up first, The Muppets gang crashes at Fozzy's mom's house for the holidays and they're bringing all their friends, even the Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock crew, in the 1987 TV special A Muppet Family Christmas. Then, we revisit one of Sean's favorite holiday traditions; we see what movies and electronics film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were recommending folks pick up in the Siskel and Ebert's 1990 Holiday Video Gift Guide! And finally, in the summer of 1992, one of biggest films was the blockbuster sequel Batman Returns. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton returned but this time Batman squares off against The Penguin (played by Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (played by Michelle Pfeiffer). But is it a Christmas movie? You bet your Batmobile it is! All this plus holiday cheer from our buddy Peter, tributes to some fallen heroes, Sean's epic new video mix tape and much more!LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. Dive into the fire on this explosive episode of "Joe Oltmann Untamed," where we expose the rotting core of American justice and political hypocrisy. Joe rips into the FBI as a complete joke while shining a relentless spotlight on the heartbreaking persecution of Tina Peters—a 70-year-old Gold Star Mom and first-time non-violent offender locked in a harsh Level 3 Colorado prison for daring to defend election integrity. With the DOJ offering to transfer her to a low-security federal Level 1 facility only for Colorado to cruelly refuse, we ask: is this deliberate cruel and unusual punishment? Powerful clips from Rocky Mountain Voice and Kyle Clark lay bare the injustice, while Governor Polis gets called out for his role in this outrage. This isn't just Tina's fight—it's a gut-wrenching warning of what happens when whistleblowers are silenced.Shifting to hope and defiance, automotive genius and truth-teller Casey Putsch joins Joe live after announcing his bold run for Ohio Governor. From turbine Batmobiles to mentoring the next generation through Genius Garage, Casey brings his unfiltered “Casey the Car Guy” fury to politics—ready to take on Vivek Ramaswamy, restore manufacturing, end indoctrination in schools, and smash the corrupt establishment. This is the outsider Ohio needs: a wrench-wielding warrior who won't sell out. Joe delivers raw truth, righteous anger, and real solutions—tune in and join the fight before it's too late! The message rings louder than ever: America is at a crossroads where patriots like Tina Peters pay with their freedom for exposing corruption, while hypocrites like Michael Bennet lecture us on an economy their own party wrecked. But hope roars in from Ohio with Casey Putsch—a real builder, mentor, and fighter stepping up to reclaim his state from the elites. This isn't just another show; it's a battle cry. The injustice against Tina is our injustice, the fight for honest elections is our fight, and leaders like Casey prove we still have warriors ready to take the wheel. Tune in, wake up, share the truth, and refuse to stay silent—because if we don't stand now, the America we love will be gone forever. Stay Untamed!
After a daring rescue, Superman and Batman continue their search for Dick Grayson (who is really Robin) and his abductor Eric Larsen. There's zero doubt, Absolute Batman Annual #1 will be one of the year's most talked-about comics. Featuring three stories by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, James Harren, Dave Stewart, Meredith McClaren, and Clayton Cowles, this hefty comic centers on the early Absolute Universe adventures of Bruce Wayne, revealing how that chonky Batmobile came to be, and just how Black Mask's party animals first encountered the Dark Knight. We read the comic a couple of weeks back, and the instant we flipped that last page, we were compelled to get Daniel Warren Johnson into a Zoom room. Thankfully, he obliged. Johnson's untitled story makes up the bulk of the Absolute Batman Annual. It propels Absolute Batman against a white supremacist horde, showcasing some of the most brutal action from the ongoing series so far, while doing so in a way that questions that violence's effectiveness. As Daniel Warren Johnson has showcased in other comics like Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb!, and his recent run on Transformers, badass, jaw-dropping visuals are only half his might as a creator. DWJ breaks hearts as often as he breaks bones. “It's in my blood and it's boiling, and I have to get it out.” In an exclusive conversation with Comic Book Couples Counseling, Johnson explains how his tale in the Absolute Batman Annual came to pass. We discuss his reluctance to contribute to the world so expertly crafted by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, and how one single image eventually caused him to put everything he had into this character and universe. Daniel Warren Johnson tells us why supplying only compelling, catastrophic action isn't enough for him as a storyteller. He requires more than an exclamation point to climax his stories. He needs a question. Absolute Batman Annual is now available from DC Comics. Make sure you're following Daniel Warren Johnson on Blue Sky, Instagram, and his Website. On Joe Untamed, Joe dives into the turbulent currents of America's political and global landscape with two powerhouse guests who bring unmatched insight to the table. First, Clare M. Lopez, a former CIA operations officer and national security expert, joins us to unpack the seismic implications of President Trump's summit with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. With her extensive background in counterterrorism and geopolitical analysis, Lopez will explore how this high-stakes meeting could reshape U.S. alliances with NATO and Middle Eastern partners, especially amid fears of concessions to Russia that could embolden authoritarian regimes like Iran. She'll also tackle Trump's controversial federal takeover of Washington, D.C.'s police, analyzing its legality and impact on local autonomy, drawing on her roles with the Center for Security Policy and Sen. Ted Cruz's advisory team. Buckle up for a no-holds-barred look at these defining moments. Next, we welcome Casey Putsch, the innovative force behind Genius Garage and a fearless YouTube commentator known as "Casey the Car Guy." From his Ohio workshop, Putsch doesn't just build groundbreaking vehicles like the turbine-powered Batmobile—he challenges the status quo, calling out U.S. government corruption and political elites. Casey will share his unfiltered take on Trump's D.C. crime crackdown, the broader political climate, and the alleged “shadow government” influence he sees undermining America. As a mentor transforming students' lives through hands-on engineering at Genius Garage, he'll also reveal how his non-profit bridges academia and industry, empowering the next generation to think independently and innovate boldly. This episode is a collision of national security expertise and grassroots truth-telling, confronting the forces shaping our nation and world. From the risks of Trump's foreign policy gambits to the erosion of trust in our institutions, Lopez and Putsch will offer clarity and challenge assumptions. Whether it's the delicate balance of federal power in D.C. or the fight for authentic conservative voices, we're cutting through the noise to deliver actionable insights. Join us for a conversation that's as urgent as it is enlightening, equipping you to navigate today's complex political terrain.
