In the realm of cutting-edge aerospace applications, precision and performance are essential for transforming the toughest materials into high-flying components. Whether titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys or advanced ceramics, these materials and the tools that machine them are the backbone of aerospace innovation. Kennametal's tooling solutions are designed to tackle manufacturers' challenges, helping them achieve higher precision, better surface finishes and increased productivity. Reliance on high-temperature resistant materials presents challenges. Traditional tooling doesn't stand a chance when used in this environment due to friction, deformation and other component failure. For example, engine parts made from titanium and superalloys must endure temperatures over 1,000°F. That's why high-temperature machining solutions become critical. It also means that the materials being used demand more than just tough tools; they must thrive under extreme conditions. High-Temperature Machining Goes the Distance Components powering everything from jet engines to exhaust systems are built to withstand extreme environments. Machining these components requires tools that can perform without compromising an aircraft's structural integrity. This is exactly where Kennametal excels, delivering tooling solutions that meet aerospace's toughest demands head-on. Innovative Tooling Solutions Kennametal's high-temperature machining tools are specifically engineered to tackle challenges such as high cutting forces, heat buildup, and work hardening. They use advanced coatings, precision geometries, and heat-resistant materials for efficient machining under extreme conditions. Kennametal's family of HARVI solid carbide end mills is a game-changer for machining tough aerospace materials like titanium and Inconel. HARVI™ Ultra 8X excels in airframe structural machining, while HARVI™ III is optimised for titanium applications. The HARVI I TE, with its twisted cutting edge, boosts corner stability and excels in ramping and helical interpolation. It features advanced anti-vibration and anti-friction technology. The innovative flute design with chip gashes reduces cutting forces, making chip evacuation super-efficient. Building on the success of the HARVI series, the newly launched HARVI II TE end mills feature a 5-flute design for aggressive cutting in ramping and plunging, as well as a proprietary W-flute shape for better chip evacuation and a stronger core. Overall, the HARVI tools deliver significant time and cost savings in aerospace operations, with impressive Metal Removal Rates (MMR) and tool life. Drilling composites like CFRP can effectively create fuselage, wing skins, and spoilers. Still, Kennametal's KenTIP™ FS series of drills featuring a double-angle geometry is specifically designed for composites. Additionally, Kennametal offers KenShape™ MaPACS & MaxPACS and HiPACS countersink and drill solutions. These tools are engineered to handle the challenges of drilling composites, ensuring clean cuts and minimising issues like delamination and fibre breakout. By using these advanced tools, manufacturers can achieve high-quality results while maintaining the structural integrity of their components. When it comes to precision turning, especially with tough materials, Kennametal's Beyond Evolution™ line of carbide and ceramic inserts will be effective. These inserts are built to handle the high temperatures associated with turning operations, which are common when working with hardened steels in landing gear and other components. Dealing with the hassle of frequent tool changes, especially when working on large components like wing sections, Kennametal's KM™ and KM4X™ modular quick-change tooling systems come into play. They make tool changes super quickly without losing accuracy. For tasks that need high repeatability, like wing skin assembly, it's crucial to calibrate tool holders to keep everything aligned perfectly regularly. “Aerospace manufacturers can achieve exceptional precision and productivity with our tooling solutions, ensuring every component meets our aerospace customers rigorous demands,” said Eva-Maria Weber, Manager Aerospace Business Unit CE. Overcoming Challenges in High Temp Machining In high-temp machining, precision, reliability, and speed are key and always at the forefront. Sometimes, problems arise, such as in thin-wall applications, surface finishes, and milling applications. Walking the Thin Line Thin-wall applications are often used to reduce weight without sacrificing structural integrity. Parts like fuselage skins, wing sections and other structural components rely on this technique. However, machining thin walls can be challenging due to vibration, deformation, and heat. To address these challenges, adjusting the feed rate and depth of cut can help reduce vibration before resorting to complex setups. Dampening tools at lower spindle speeds can improve stability without compromising finish quality. Kennametal's high-feed mills and coated carbide inserts can successfully machine titanium for fuselage sections, maintaining wall stability and accuracy. In relation to spar fittings, machining composite components and aluminium, which consist of thin walls, requires careful part movement and precise and rigid fixturing while managing machining around multiple pockets. Milling Applications Machining materials like titanium, Inconel, and CFRP can present obstacles due to their strength, lightweight, and resistance to high temperatures. Superalloys and hardened metals generate significant cutting forces, leading to vibration, deflection, and tool wear, especially when tight tolerances are required. Aerospace components are often complex and have 3D shapes, requiring multi-axis milling and customised tooling strategies to ensure accuracy in hard-to-reach areas. “Our advanced milling solutions are specifically designed to address unique challenges, providing efficiency and accuracy when machining high-performance materials like titanium and Inconel,” said Patrick Mesnil, District Business Manager and aerospace business leader France & Benelux. Advanced tooling coated with Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) or PCD can improve cutting efficiency. Optimised cutting conditions, including adjusting speeds, feeds, and depths of cut, help manage heat and forces during machining. Effective cooling solutions, like high-pressure coolant, dissipate heat and prevent workpiece deformation. Multi-axis CNC machines allow for precise machining of complex 3D shapes, ensuring accuracy in hard-to-reach areas. Surface Finish When it comes to high-temp machining, achieving quality surface finishes is essential. It can be affected by factors such as tool wear, cutting speed, feed rate and the material being machined. Advanced multilayer coating technologies like TiAlN and AlTiN on their carbide tools help control the heat at the cutting edge. These coatings act as a barrier, reducing friction and heat transfer. As new aircraft standards emerge, emphasising lighter, more heat-resistant, and sustainable components, continuous innovation in tool geometries and coatings plays a critical role in advancing component development. For example, larger components, such as engine cases, require challenging process controls and careful application with tool pressure in mind. Internal and external milling operations must also consider thin walls and fine surface finish requirements when working with tough materials. Additionally, turbine disks require managing low thermal conductivity and vibration to avoid part deformation. This requires application-specific tooling to provide the required cooling capabilities and productivity. As the industry continues to explore new materials and complex geometries, advanced tooling solutions must meet emerging challenges. In high-temperature machining, where precision, reliability and speed are crucial, Kennametal's tools provide aerospace manufacturers with solutions to support the next generation of high-flying components. Designing and engineering tools that solve today's challenges and anticipate tomorrow is essential.

Building contractors, especially smaller ones who build 1-5 houses at a time, have to pay clean up crews to haul off the excess lumber & they rent the dumpsters & sometimes have to pay extra by weight & to be emptied. If you see a house is being built, stop by and talk to the contractor about dumpster diving or collecting left overs. They will usually say ok, as long as you promise to go by after the crew is done for the day and they also want you to guarantee you are not going to sue them if you hurt yourself. Every contractor I have talked to is THANKFUL that I am taking stuff away and they don't have to pay to haul off. Here''s a short list of what I have gotten for free that way: 1/2 pex - appx 150 ft because crews don't like to mess with the last 20-30 ft of the roll stuck in the plastic. 3 strand wire (at least 150' from 4 different houses. The Chinese people are very concerned about their country's tense relationship with the United States and it's a factor in weak consumer confidence, says Beijing-based David Mahon.Mahon, a New Zealander who has lived in China since 1984, is Managing Director of Mahon China Investment Management. He spoke to interest.co.nz in the latest episode of our Of Interest podcast.Mahon says during a recent visit to a mountain village in Yunnan Province, one of the more remote places in China, he had dinner with local officials. This highlighted worry about ongoing tensions with the US."All were asking me about why is it America wants a war with China. They are concerned with the tension they could sense. It worried them for their own futures, their kids, their own prosperity," Mahon says."If people living as remotely from the centres of power and commerce are concerned about a dynamic like that, it shows all of China is concerned. It is a factor of the low consumer confidence at the moment."Mahon says the Chinese economy's "probably more complex than I can remember.""There's a lack of confidence, consumers are not going back to buying and investing as they were and the Government is now struggling to reset things as far as it feels it needs it must to get demand back on track.""China's not in the doldrums but there are a patchwork of doldrums across the country," says Mahon.Nonetheless Mahon says by the second quarter next year "all these major concerns and these doubts about the Chinese economy will be being put to one side." And whilst there's a challenging 12 to 18 months for New Zealand dairy exports to China and Fonterra, with China sitting on more than 500,000 metric tonnes of whole milk powder in storage, there are good times ahead, which will be helped when all NZ dairy exports to China become tariff free from the start of 2024.In the podcast Mahon also talks about China's efforts to become carbon neutral, why he thinks deflation fears are overdone, what's gong on with China's property sector, the importance of the Chinese middle class, what the Chinese Communist Party needs to do to shore up the tacit support of the people, why tax changes are needed, recent floods, and more.*You can find all episodes of the Of Interest podcast here, including two previous ones featuring David Mahon.

Abstract: The ability to prioritize task-relevant inputs enables efficient behavior across the human lifespan. However, contexts in which feature relevance is ambiguous require dynamic exploration rather than stable selectivity. Although both cognitive flexibility and stability generally decline with ageing, it is unknown whether the aging brain differentially adjusts to changing uncertainty. Here, we comprehensively assess the dynamic range of uncertainty adjustments across the adult lifespan (N = 100) via behavioral modelling and a theoretically informed set of human neuroimaging signatures (EEG-, fMRI-, and pupil-based). As a group, older adults show a broadscale dampening of neuro-computational uncertainty adjustments. In support of a 'maintenance' account of brain aging, older individuals with more young-like neural recruitment were better able to select task-relevant features, also in a Stroop task with low perceptual demands. Our results highlight neural mechanisms whose maintenance plausibly enables flexible task set, perception, and decision computations across the adult lifespan. Copy rights belong to original authors. In this episode of GoGreenfields, the game of food sculpture is simple - prepare a plate of food like any plate anyone has ever seen. Shape it, stack it, sculpt it… whatever you do, be sure that you have created something that smells, tastes, and LOOKS amazing! River and Terran were certainly up to the challenge. Food Sculpture - Terran's Approach Did you know that food has been used as art for over one thousand years. Many people credit Filippo Tommaso Marinetti as the first food artist. His cookbook was (is) really much more than a cookbook, which is obvious pretty quickly when you find recipes such as “ice cream on the moon”. Terran made it a goal to fool the taste tester with his food sculpture. You might do a double take when you realize that the “turkey” set before you is much more than a roast bird. Food Sculpture - River's Approach Over the years, food has found its way into art in many different forms. There have been restaurants devoted to food art, served food sculptures at parties and galleries, displayed giant butter sculptures at fairs, and even disguised food in highly realistic showpieces. River was channeling that inspiration as he plated his “corn”. Be prepared, this corn will hit your sweet spot in a way the field grown variety can't. Corn on the Cob Sculpture Ingredients 1 stick butter, softened 1/2 c. granulated stevia 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. almond flour Dash kosher salt 2 bags candy corn Directions Beat butter and sugar together, Add vanilla Add almond flour and salt and beat until fully combined. Create four logs from the dough, wrap and refrigerate for two hours. Pull dough logs from the fridge and push candy corn into it, forming neat rows. Refrigerate at least 1 hour Serve and enjoy! Thanksgiving Roll Trick-and-Treat Ingredients 4 cups flour 1T yeast 1T sugar 2 tsp salt 1/4 cup avocado oil 1¼ cups water 10 oz ground beef 1 large onion 3T olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper 1 tsp thyme 1/2 tsp cumin 1/4 cup pine nuts 1 egg Directions - Dough: In a mixing bowl combine flour, yeast and sugar. Add salt, water and oil, and continue mixing until the dough ball begins to form. Remove from the bowl and knead the dough for 7 or 8 minutes Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and let rise for 1 hour. Directions - Filling: Over medium heat, sauté chopped onion until it becomes slightly translucent Add crushed garlic and sauté for an additional two minutes. Add ground beef, salt, pepper, thyme, cumin and pine nuts, and continue to cook for 3-5 minutes, until meat is thoroughly cooked. Allow to cool. Directions - Assembling and Sculpting Divide ⅔ of the dough into 10 equal pieces and shape each piece into ball Roll the balls into four inch circles Place a small dollop of filling in the center of each Pinch the dough closed and round into a ball Remove small pieces from the remaining dough to be shaped into turkey legs Dampening dough where connecting the turkey leg. Gently pinch the pieces together, so the “legs” are securely attached Repeat for each roll Place all the “turkeys” in a baking try, cover and let rest 20 minutes Preheat the oven to 355F Brush the “turkeys” with egg wash Bake 20 minutes Serve, laugh, and enjoy! This is the second episode in a 3 part series based on The Conference Board report “US Labor Shortages: Challenges and Solutions.” In this second episode, Gad Levanon, Head of The Conference Board Labor Markets Institute, and Frank Steemers, Associate Economist, discuss the impact of higher wages on the labor market and corporate profits. Based on our Labor Shortages Solutions Survey, raising wages was the most used solution for both recruitment and retention challenges. Given acute labor shortages for blue-collar and manual services occupations, wage acceleration is most prevalent for these workers. At the same time, The Conference Board Salary Increase Budgets Survey for 2020 shows that a combination of slow salary raises for existing workers and rapid wage acceleration for new hires is contributing to historic levels of pay compression —when the wage premium for experience shrinks. Such pay compression is leading to higher labor turnover of more experienced workers who can easily find new jobs in this tight labor market. The acceleration in wages and quit rates, along with slow labor productivity growth, are reducing US corporate profits. With the US economy projected to slow and labor shortages escalating, the pressure on corporate profits is likely to increase in the coming years.

Today we join Bill Mckibben to discuss news from the frontlines of climate chaos and resistance. The discussion centers around the potential fate of modern civilization and the imperative to survive and to restore biodiversity. Bill McKibben is an author and environmentalist. His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book written for a general audience discussing climate change, and has been translated into 24 languages. He’s gone on to write a dozen more books and to receive the Right Livelihood Prize, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel.’ McKibben is a founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement, which has organized twenty thousand rallies around the world in nearly every country, spearheaded the resistance to the Keystone Pipeline, and launched the fast-growing fossil fuel divestment movement.
