Michael Colarossi of Avery Dennison explains how Digital Product Passports can be a key enabler in the transition to a circular economy. Michael is head of Enterprise Sustainability at Avery Dennison, which specializes in global materials science and digital identification solutions. As part of the the leadership team, Michael is responsible for environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy across the company's worldwide operations. His work focuses on climate action, decarbonization, global supply chain transparency, digital product passports, circular labels and packaging materials. You might already know that the European Union is rolling out a new regulation meaning that nearly all products sold in the EU will require a Digital Product Passport (DPP). The initiative is part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, and aims to enhance transparency and improve availability of reliable product data, by providing comprehensive information about each product's origin, materials, environmental impact, and recommendations for disposal. The EU Digital Product Passport will include a unique product identifier, compliance documentation, and information on substances of concern. It will also provide user manuals, safety instructions, and guidance on product disposal. The EU intends that Digital Product Passports will enhance supply chain management, ensure regulatory compliance, and help companies identify and mitigate risks related to authenticity and environmental impact. For example, those products like mattresses, sofas and other home furnishings often contain multiple materials, including some natural fibres like wool and cotton, plus synthetics like polyester. The more we know about the make up of the product, the easier it is to decide whether and how it could be refurbished, remanfactured or recycled. The EU regulations will be mandatory for industrial and electric vehicle batteries from 2027, and other product categories, including textiles, are expected to follow by 2030. Michael Colarossi gives us a broader overview of Digital Product Passports, including what kinds of products are they useful for, and what forms they take. As Michael explains, the EU regulations only require the passport to provide details for the type of product – not for every individual unit of that product. We discuss why that more detailed approach would be better. We talk about the potential for Digital Product Passports to guard against fraud and misinformation This isn't straightforward, and we talk about some of the barriers and difficulties from a company perspective, together with the advantages that help make a good business case for doing it, even without the legislation.
Episode 182 Thomas Rödding Digital Product Passport Thomas Rödding, CEO of Narravero, discusses the Digital Product Passport and its significance in the context of the European Union's Green Deal and ESG taxonomy. The Digital Product Passport is a digital interface that provides comprehensive information about a product, including its ingredients, manufacturing process, certificates, and end-of-life options. It aims to enable a circular economy by making it easier for consumers to make informed choices and for businesses to provide transparency and traceability. The implementation of the Digital Product Passport has the potential to revolutionize the way products are produced, consumed, and disposed of, leading to more sustainable practices and better environmental outcomes. The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a powerful tool that combines sustainability and compliance with customer experience and centricity. It provides a way to make products more transparent, accessible, and trustworthy. The DPP enables consumers to easily access vital information about a product, such as its environmental impact, ethical considerations, and authenticity. It also empowers consumers to make informed decisions and encourages businesses to adopt more sustainable practices. The DPP has the potential to revolutionize various industries, including agriculture, by promoting regenerative practices and reducing waste. Starting early with the implementation of the DPP is crucial to stay ahead of the game and reap the benefits of improved customer experience and compliance. The DPP also opens up opportunities for marketing, services, and innovation, creating a more sustainable and future-fit world. The Digital Product Passport is a digital interface that provides comprehensive information about a product, enabling consumers to make informed choices and businesses to provide transparency and traceability. The implementation of the Digital Product Passport has the potential to revolutionize the way products are produced, consumed, and disposed of, leading to more sustainable practices and better environmental outcomes. May 27, 2024, Exciting news from the EU! The Council of the European Union has given its final approval to the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (#ESPR), marking a major milestone in our journey towards sustainability. This groundbreaking regulation mandates that all products placed on the European market will require a #Digital #Product #Passport. This passport will provide comprehensive information on the environmental sustainability of products, enhancing transparency and enabling informed consumer choices. This initiative will significantly reduce the environmental impact of products, improve circularity, and drive innovation across various industries. It's a transformative step that aligns with our commitment to a greener and more sustainable future. And the Digital Product Passport will bring about positive realities for Europe! It won't be straightforward – a lot of work awaits us. However, many smart minds are working on the DPP concept in an interdisciplinary manner, connecting with each other, thinking from the perspective of businesses and end customers – for a circular economy that can and will work. #DigitalProductPassport #EuropeanUnion #GreenDeal #ESGtaxonomy #circulareconomy #transparency #traceability #stainability #futurefit #DPP #espr #circulareconomy #customerexperience #marketingfuture #sustainability #digitalproductpassport #nexteraofmedia #eutaxonomy #Sustainability #Ecodesign #GreenTransition #Innovation https://youtu.be/1-fohBUciMo https://www.narravero.com/en https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-roedding/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/narravero https://www.youtube.com/@narravero https://medium.com/@thomas-roedding https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2024/05/27/green-transition-council-gives-its-final-approval-to-the-ecodesign-regulation/ https://youtu.be/1-fohBUciMo

Zu seinen Veröffenltichungen zählt u.a., mit William McDonough, "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things".

(https://corr.es/d95d6a)

Part II of the conversation with Larry Beasley and Jonathan Barnett. Why do we even live in cities? There's been a lot of criticism about them during the pandemic which makes this the perfect time to reflect on this very question. Larry and Jonathan discuss this and much more in this second half of the conversation, the first half from two weeks ago. My two guests today for the part of this series did not have the luxury of doing this in theory. Larry Beasley, former Co-Director of Planning for Vancouver, BC helped bring about a Vancouver that began as a fairly unremarkable place compared to other cities but with a stunning natural backdrop, into a world-leading city consistently ranked in the top 10 most livable cities coexisting with the stunning wilderness that surrounds it. Jonathan Barnett is the emeritus Professor of Practice in City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania with a heavy focus on practice while being both a professor and advisor to an impressive list of cities on many important livability-enhancing projects. Both men share a mountain (pun intended!) of wisdom and experience as well as a lot of great stories from their rich and accomplished careers. And they’re not done yet; both have been busy as individuals and co-authors of several significant books including: Ecodesign for Cities and Suburbs, Designing the Megaregion and Vancouverism among many others. These books are highly practical and interesting to think deeply about as you think about your own cities and how things could become more livable and how to get there. Both are also co-creators of an online course also by the name of Ecodesign for Cities and Suburbs that can be taken by anyone interested in how “ecology can guide urban design to avert environmental disasters and improve people’s lives.” You won’t want to miss the chance to take this course if you’re wondering how properly designed cities really can be a significant part of curbing global climate changes. If you were in a position to lead a plan to make your city more livable, how would you do it, what would you do? How would you go about instilling your vision for greater livability but in close collaboration with your fellow city residents, how would you do that?

Dennis started his career as an engineer officer in the Federal German Army, and during his spare time experimented with electric vehicles and batteries. Along with a group of friends Dennis founded V.E.R.A. in 1998, a club for electric vehicle enthusiasts based in the Aachen region of Germany. He went on to start the business REAP Systems, specialising in battery management systems for large lithium-ion batteries for vehicles on land and water. We talk about the combined challenges of sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship, including the disconnect between climate science and business, the impacts of tax structures, the inertia of existing industries and how to attract staff to ventures that are more meaningful but inherently less lucrative. Dennis also introduces Project Venice, his ground breaking new project to bring hybrid electric engine technology to the marine world, starting in Venice. The project aims to tackle the issues of air pollution, fuel efficiency, noise pollution and vibration damage within the iconic Italian city. Despite its obvious benefits, the marine industry will not invest in this new technology or adopt it until it is proven, posing a catch 22. REAP Systems are therefore investing a large sum of their own money and launching a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGogo to prove that the technology is viable and reliable and kickstart the transition to more sustainable boat transportation. Details of the crowdfunding campaign can be found at: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/hybrid-engine-to-clean-up-venice-lagoon-more--2#/
