Read the transcript of this podcast Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights Ryan talks about personal development and becoming better leaders through understanding our own complexities and healing. He explores the science of sanctification and the difference between merely doing better and truly becoming better, focusing on our "being side"—the quality of our internal operating system—rather than just our "doing side," which encompasses our skills and knowledge. Learning this distinction can help leaders as they support others who are struggling in their lives. Ryan explains how our relationships with risk, failure, conflict, and even ourselves can reveal the quality of our being. Many leaders operate from a place of fear or insecurity, which can limit their effectiveness and impact. Ryan explores the concept of the "window of tolerance," which refers to our ability to manage stress and emotional responses. He explains how a narrow window can lead to reactivity, while a wider window allows for greater emotional regulation and resilience. Understanding this can help leaders create a supportive environment for their congregations. Ryan also encourages leaders to consider their own journeys and the areas where they may need healing. 00:02:00 - The evolution of Ryan's books and the deepening of his leadership concepts 00:05:00 - Mindsets and the difference between vertical and horizontal development in leadership 00:07:00 - The Being Side vs. Doing Side: The importance of focusing on the "being" side of leadership for transformational growth 00:09:00 - Connection between leadership principles and gospel teachings, emphasizing the importance of becoming 00:10:30 - The role of personal healing in effective leadership and the importance of self-awareness 00:12:00 - The window of tolerance and its relevance to emotional regulation 00:15:00 - Personal complexity and its impact on leadership effectiveness 00:20:00 - Exploration of emotional complexity and self-complexity in leaders 00:25:00 - Examining leaders' relationships with risk, failure, and conflict as indicators of their health 00:30:00 - Contrast between survival-focused leadership and purpose-driven leadership 00:35:00 - Investigating the quality of relationships with self, others, and various challenges 00:40:00 - The challenges of people-pleasing and its impact on leadership effectiveness The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks to Bo Winegard and Noah Carl, the editors behind the online publication Aporia Magazine, founded in 2022. Winegard and Carl are both former academics. Winegard has a social psychology Ph.D. from Florida State University, and was an assistant professor at Marietta College. He was an editor at Quillette before moving to Aporia. Carl earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Oxford University. He was a research fellow at St. Edmund's College, Cambridge, before becoming a contributor to The Daily Skeptic and UnHerd, and a managing editor at Aporia. First, Razib asks Winegard and Carl about their respective cancellations, and the recent attacks on Aporia from the British media in particular. Winegard observes that many of the criticisms were muddled, as journalists struggled to get basic facts straight about who did what, as well as mixing up present associations among various editors with past ones. The two also address the change in the culture over the last few years, as cancellations seem to have lost some of their bite. Then Razib asks Winegard about the perception that Aporia is fixated on the third-rail of American culture: race and IQ, and its relevance to social policy and politics. Winegard talks about how he has long since said everything he has to say on the topic, but he still finds that the public conversation fails to address the possibility of cognitive differences between populations, and so keeps finding himself wading back in, to fill a gap in the discourse. Razib also asks the editors about their view of “cold winters theory,” which attempts to explain the higher IQs of temperate zone populations versus tropical ones. Then they discuss the disappointments of the MAGA movement, and its appeal to populist emotion. Winegard had hoped that despite its inchoate nature, it might have been able to pare back the radical excesses of the progressive cultural changes of the 2010's, but now he worries that overreach may up the chances that woke policies make a comeback with the inevitable political backlash in the next few years. Winegard also addresses his personal souring on reflexive anti-wokism, and Carl shares his own views from across the Atlantic, where Britain appears to follow in the US' footsteps, even if from an entirely different social-historical context. Winegard discusses the difficulties of maintaining a consistent heterodoxy in the face of tribalistic demands for conformity. Finally, they discuss the path forward for publications like Aporia that do not toe any particular party line.

Tom Bodrovics once again engages in an interesting conversation with Danielle DiMartino Booth, CEO and Chief Strategist for QI Research, former Fed Insider, and author of the book "Fed Up." The conversation focuses on the ongoing recession that likely began in Q1 2024. Danielle highlights key data points, such as job losses starting in Q2 2024, which confirm the recession's onset. Despite this clarity, official channels are reluctant to acknowledge the recession due to political considerations. Danielle emphasizes the severe impact of student loan forbearance and credit constraints on US households, noting that rising defaults will further strain consumer spending. This situation is compounded by a lack of clear policies to replace past stimulus measures, leaving the economy vulnerable. Danielle shifts into the commercial real estate sector, with banks facing growing pressure to recognize losses. She critiques the Federal Reserve for ignoring critical data, such as shelter inflation and job losses, in favor of focusing on tariffs' impact on goods prices. This stance, she argues, is politically motivated and disregards the Fed's own historical lessons. Investors are advised to prioritize safety over riskier assets, given the high returns on cash and the uncertain economic outlook. Danielle concludes by urging empathy and support for communities navigating these challenging times, emphasizing the importance of looking out for one another during economic hardship. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Sophie Bertin. You know that feeling when everything looks good on paper, a great job, supportive colleagues, a solid paycheck, but something inside keeps whispering, this isn't it! That was Sophie. She had a comfortable life, but comfort wasn't enough. It took a spark - an unexpected stat about entrepreneurs from a business school dean when Sophie was at a less-than-satisfying moment in her career - for her to realize: “Why am I in the 50% who haven't taken the leap?” That catalyzed her turning point. Sophie Bertin has a varied career path, from strategic consultancy, to banking operations, to the European Commission and now turned entrepreneur. She recently founded Serapy with the aim of improving corporate compliance training through the combination of simulations, gamification, role play and online tools. Serapy uses the latest educational theories to provide trainings with increased retention rate, and combines that with AI tools to enhance the learning process. Serapy is currently present in Switzerland, Bulgaria, Portugal, France and the UAE. Serapy has been accepted in the incubation program of the Unicorn Factory Lisbon and of Station F in Paris. In addition to Serapy, Sophie has her own consultancy (Parnima Consulting) since 2016, where she works with top legal and regulatory firms, consultancy firms and financial clients on EU Regulations in the area of Financial Services, Foreign Subsidies and State Aid. She also serves as independent board member of Eastnets, a leading provider of AML, SWIFT and payments solutions. She sits on the Remuneration, Nomination and Governance Committee. Before becoming entrepreneur, Sophie was Group Head of Corporate Development and Managing Director of SIX Group (in Switzerland), in charge of strategy development, innovation and regulatory affairs. During the Financial Crisis, she served as Head of Unit at the Directorate General for Competition within the European Commission. There, she was responsible for the review and approval of the State aid provided by Member States to the financial services (mostly banks) during the financial crisis of 2008-2014. Prior to her role with the European Commission, Sophie held senior positions within SWIFT, where she was globally in charge of Asset Servicing; with The Bank of New York Mellon; and worked with the top consultancies McKinsey and later Bain &Co. She started her career path as IT and database programmer, which is very helpful now with the latest AI tools she uses in her start-up. She started her studies in Vienna, graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris, holds an MBA from INSEAD and a post-graduate diploma in EU Competition Law from King's College. She holds also a diploma from the Swiss Board Institute. She is member of the Executive Committee of the INSEAD Alumni organization, and she is also the founder and president of the global INSEAD Women in Business Club. Recently, she finished an advanced AI Mastery class and won the award for the best AI Application Builder. She is promoting and advocating for AI literacy among women and through the INSEAD Women in Business Club organizes events for Women in AI.

New horror subclasses just dropped, and we're here to reanimate them, roast them, and regret reading the action economy aloud. Support our friends at DungeonFlow, because your dungeon shouldn't look like it was sketched during a Zoom call. Unearthed Arcana: Horror Subclasses Show Notes In this episode, the RPGBOT crew proves that horror isn't just for the subclasses—it's also in trying to sync microphones. After wrestling with some haunted audio gremlins, the hosts dive headfirst into the latest Unearthed Arcana drop from Wizards of the Coast, which brings a trio of spooky new subclass options to the D&D table. First up: the Artificer Reanimator, which asks the important question, “What if your sidekick was a science experiment?” With mechanics that feel like equal parts Frankenstein and Excel spreadsheet, the gang unpacks the subclass's vibes, power level, and general corpse-hugging potential. Next, they dig into the Hollow Warden Ranger, a subclass so reliant on Hunter's Mark that it might as well come with a branded tattoo. Spoiler: there's one way to build it, and WotC really wants you to take that path. The group debates its narrow design, interesting healing mechanics, and whether you can actually play it without needing a second concentration slot stapled to your forehead. Then it's time for a séance with the Grave Domain Cleric and College of Spirits Bard—both bearing mechanical changes that sparked nostalgia, mild rage, and Bardic action economy debates worthy of a dissertation. Turns out when you nerf old faves, the ghosts of playtesters past come back to haunt you. The discussion also wanders into Ravenloft's LaMortia, Van Richten's Guide, and the tragic identity crisis of the Hexblade Warlock, who still isn't quite sure what they're supposed to be when they grow up. With a healthy dose of snark, love, and grief over lost subclass features, the crew gives their full take on what works, what doesn't, and what still smells faintly of necromantic glue. Key Takeaways The real horror was the audio levels we fixed along the way. The Artificer Reanimator is what happens when a necromancer raids Home Depot. Reanimator gameplay is cool and crunchy—but don't ask how it stacks up next to Necromancers unless you want a debate. Ranger's Hollow Warden is basically "Concentration: The Subclass." There is exactly one way to build it—and if you deviate, your damage goes to a farm upstate. Players are not thrilled about the subclass being chained to Hunter's Mark. Healing-through-hitting is a new mechanic that kind of slaps, literally. New auras = new damage toys. But still… it's all wrapped around Hunter's Mark like clingfilm. Grave Cleric and College of Spirits Bard have been redesigned, and not everyone's happy about their new wardrobe. The action economy is still Bard's greatest horror story. Hexblade Warlock is having a full-blown identity crisis and might need a long rest… or therapy. Undead Warlock is both buffed and nerfed, which is somehow the most D&D thing imaginable. Ravenloft still slaps. LaMortia is creepy, cold, and full of subclass inspiration. Player feedback is a literal mechanic now—give it, or don't complain when your subclass becomes unrecognizable. Game design needs to stop making subclasses feel like assembly instructions from IKEA. Weapon Mastery and auras may help salvage narrow builds, but only just. Multiclassing into Nature Cleric can make your Ranger feel like it got invited to the cool kids' table. Perfectionism can feel like a badge of honor, but it often hides a deeper fear of being seen as not enough. You pour time and energy into every detail, hoping it'll protect you from judgment or failure, but all it really does is keep you stuck. There's always one more thing to fix, one more reason not to hit “go.” Eventually, progress slows to a crawl, and what started as high standards turns into quiet self-sabotage. It's exhausting chasing an idea of success that never lets you rest. Claus Raasted doesn't just talk about change—he's lived it. After leading the world's biggest LARP design studio, a major career reset pushed him to rebuild from the ground up. Now a consultant and educator, he helps people cut through perfectionism and self-sabotage to unlock what actually works. He emphasizes using your strengths, not fixing every flaw, and speaks honestly about the traps of overthinking and burnout. His message is clear: success isn't about doing everything—it's about doing you better. Stay tuned! Resources: Are you looking for an overpaid rockstar consultant to help you with GETTING SHIT DONE? Courtroom Calling: Col. Greg Thompson and Katie BakerPractice may not always make perfect, but at Cedarville University, it launches futures. The University's mock trial team is preparing students for legal careers and inspiring them to model the love of Christ in the courtroom.Colonel (Ret.) Greg Thompson, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, brought his extensive legal background to Cedarville as a Professor of Criminal Justice. With experience in criminal prosecution, defense, and national security law — as well as time coaching mock trial at the U.S. Air Force Academy — he was well-equipped to launch the University's mock trial program. One of the first students on the team was Katie Baker, a passionate social work major who found her calling in the courtroom.Katie, now heading to the University of Akron School of Law, first stepped into the world of legal advocacy through Cedarville's new mock trial team. Inspired by her internship in children's services, she witnessed firsthand the heartache — and hope — found in family law. Her drive to stand in the gap for hurting children and families only deepened through the team.Mock trial at Cedarville is more than competition. It's a training ground for future advocates built on biblical truth and a commitment to excellence. Students wrestle through 250-page case files, face unpredictable courtroom twists, and stand with poise, shaped by Col. Thompson's guidance and reminders that every courtroom mirrors the deeper truth that Christ stands as our advocate.Though the team didn't claim a championship trophy this year, they competed with heart against top-tier programs — and earned respect for both their skill and the faith that underpins it.In just two seasons, Cedarville's mock trial team has built an extraordinary legacy where faith meets advocacy and students like Katie step boldly into the future.Hear Katie and Col. Thompson share the team's formative and funny stories on this week's episode of the Cedarville Stories podcast.https://share.transistor.fm/s/d8a69d2chttps://youtu.be/twmISdeAsJk
– “I'll take care of this, Honey.” Eleanor and I dragged our stocky, dark, wooden desk chairs up to our door to peer over the open transom at the long hall. Robin majored in English at The College of William and Mary. In “those days,” creative writing was absent from the heady curriculum, although Robin wrote poetry which was published in several lit magazines. After college, she taught high school English in Fairfax, Virginia. Creative writing was included in Robin's classrooms. Robin has written two memoirs, both published by Pisgah Press, multiple short stories and essays, and, of course, poetry. A third book, a collection of all genres of Robin's writing, is nearing completion. Robin and her husband live in Asheville, NC. www.robingaiser.com

Before listening: This episode was recorded 4/7/25. I share life updates from that time period -- obv before Philly Man (and wallpaper LOL). What I share around 8:00 was not easy for me to be open and vulnerable about but I let myself have time to process and pray and receive council, and I think it is the perfect example of vulnerably sharing for the purpose of helping others.Thank you for being here, I love you.Show NotesHappy you're here with me - make sure to follow on IG! @whoisshe_podSupport the PodcastFOLLOW DANIELLEon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/daniellewalter/on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@daniellewalter_
