EP 141 - Suky Sodhi, Work From Home vs. Return To OfficeIn this episode, we dive into the ongoing debate around the Return to Office (RTO) mandates issued by many employers. Is returning to the office the right move for companies and employees? How do economic conditions and personal preferences influence this decision? Suky joins us to share insightful perspectives on navigating these challenges in today's evolving workplace.WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why Suky feels you can't let economic conditions act as roadblocksSuky's feelings on the Work From Home vs. Return To Office discussionWhy it's helpful to accept that being in business will never be just smooth sailingWhy Suky feels that going to industry events is so crucial for networking aloneHow to not overwhelm yourself with knowledge and goals after you attend a conferenceWhy we will always have our own biases and how to navigate those while making decisionsHow to decide as an employee  if it's time to part ways and find a new remote job or get back into the officeFAVORITE QUOTE:  Suky Sodhi“We tried the remote thing and it didn't work for us.”Suky Sodhi___________________________________________________________________________CONNECT WITH GUESTFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/professionalselectionInstagram: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sukysodhi/Website: https://canadianstaffingindustrysummit.com/Bio:I'm Suky an adrenaline junkie who celebrates every single win. I believe we must celebrate and collect all our wins along the way as it fuels forward momentum to ensure we exceed our goals. When we fuel forward momentum, complacency simply can not settle in. With over 25 years of experience working in the staffing industry, 16 of those working with global recruitment companies, I bring the knowledge and experience of working in 18 countries and successfully navigating through numerous “recession” cycles.Companies often get so focused on the bottom line that they forget that we are in the “people business”. For me, the magic happens when my clients recognize the best way to create a truly sustainable high-performance sales culture is to bring both into alignment.WHY I'M DIFFERENTI believe sales teams need a voice at the board room table. Leadership traditionally listens to that voice through the VP of Sales who themselves are listening through line managers. So, who at the boardroom table is listening to the voice directly? Neither strategy nor implementation can work alone, both must combine with each stakeholder's own unique mindset—the stories we tell ourselves. Our past experiences also play a massive part in how we receive and respond to training. We work together to create a tailored strategy, that drives revenue-generating results that are not only profitable but sustainable and aligned with your business. When we recognize the unique experience each person is having, we can create a true high-performance sales culture and elevate employee engagement. Both elements must coexist for long-term success. THE PROBLEM Many companies do not recognize that the real “bottleneck” is NOT their sales teams, it's with their leadership team. Leaders often try to correct course by enforcing even stricter KPIs and “rules” because that is what they've learnt. This type of leadership creates emotional and physical detachment from the most important people in the business who are representing you every day. I provide the crucial missing link, ensuring both parties' voices are heard and allows me to deliver bespoke training which meets both the individual and company's objective. ___________________________________________________________________________CONNECT with Lori: Facebook: @LoriMJewettInstagram: @jewettloriThe “80HD Book” - ORDER HERE! This isn't just another podcast—it's a deep dive into the raw, unfiltered power within YOU. Our featured guest on this episode is Flo Navarro, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at iQor Philippines and Head of Global Recruiting. Flo has a huge responsibility. In addition to overseeing all traditional HR functions for roughly 27,000 iQorians in the Philippines, she also oversees global talent recruiting.      As a BPO with a presence in nine countries, we're constantly recruiting to meet the needs of our clients' customer care programs. Whether it's a new client or an expansion of a current client program, we're always recruiting to attract and retain customer support talent. And Flo is the leader who oversees all of it.    Flo is quick to point out that talent recruiting is a big team effort. Her team partners with Operations, Marketing, and Workforce Management to create awareness for the available customer support agent opportunities and fill the pipeline with qualified candidates.      Flo says that recruiting thousands of new hires is both complicated and fun. It's an end-to-end recruiting process that starts with sourcing, then screening, selection, and onboarding. In each step, the team devotes time to ensure they use best-in-class methods to achieve the recruiting goals for each client.     Flo's professional background includes two decades in the BPO industry. She has seen many different recruiting strategies in her career. She is very appreciative of the leadership team at iQor for the high level of support given to recruiting. Likewise, the investment made in technology has been a game-changer. She is very grateful for having access to the right systems that enable her team to source and hire thousands of contact center staff each year.     Talent Recruiting is a Team Effort   Flo is very intentional in declaring that everyone on her team is very involved in the talent recruiting process. Her team is hands-on with designing digital marketing ads to communicate the company's culture and values, not just the job details. They work with Marketing to attract viable candidates through digital advertising and a digital bot named Qori, who can help candidates fulfill an application process digitally. They also provide valuable input on the messaging to ensure consistency with the brand and convey our irresistible culture with authenticity. Her team ensures that the content effectively communicates the benefits of working at iQor.      iQor's Response to COVID 19    Flo explains how we acted very fast in response to the pandemic. Under Flo's leadership, HR created a dedicated COVID-19 group. The group provides a direct line for employees to contact for any reason to report something or if they need help. The group is trained to answer questions about COVID-19 and iQor's procedures and will escalate if the question can't be answered. If someone tests positive, someone from this group checks in with them every day. If the employee is alone, the iQor COVID-19 group will do whatever is needed to provide meals to the individual. Contact tracing is also provided to ensure the safety of employees who are working in the office.      Talent Recruiting Success Story   Flo points out that there are many examples of recruiting success, but she shares one example. One client has an annual need to add thousands of agents to support their program during a peak season. Flo's team is ready with the processes, recruiters, and technology to launch the recruiting effort. She proudly proclaims that year-over-year, her team exceeds the recruiting goals of this client. As always, Flo recognizes her team, including the recruiters on the ground and the technology that enables candidates to apply with great convenience. She gives credit to the collaboration between her team and Operations, Marketing, and the Workforce Management team to successfully hire thousands of new agents in a matter of weeks!      Fun Time   Flo shared two ways that she has fun. In pre-pandemic times she and her family enjoyed hosting parties. She looks forward to going back to throwing parties in a post-pandemic world. In current times, she is very satisfied with binge-watching shows on Netflix with her family.     Learn more about iQor digital customer experience capabilities.   Read the blog post here. Recruitment Legends: Leadership and Life Lessons From 40 Years in the Global Recruiting Industry, with Doug Bugie, Ep #69

The Resilient Recruiter

For almost 40 years, Doug Bugie has travelled the globe in search of the big billers and recruitment leaders of the future.  He's personally sold 800 recruitment franchises in 40 countries that collectively have filled over 100,000 assignments. It's a great privilege to interview Doug for the second time. In this episode, Doug shares his unique experience of helping James Caan, of Dragon's Den fame, launch Humana International. In 7 years, they grew Humana to 200 offices in 27 countries and $90m before the business was acquired by MRI in 2001. Doug reveals some of the insights gained and lessons learned from working closely with James and other recruitment industry legends.    You will hear a comparison between recruiting in the UK and the US, plus Doug's insightful perspective on the future of the recruitment industry, the need to balance between humanity and technology, and much more. Doug represents FPC, a top 1% performer in the recruitment industry as ranked by Forbes, and ranked top 50 in franchisee satisfaction by Franchise Business Review. Outside the US, Doug represents Antal International, ranked by Recruiter Magazine as one of the UK's fastest-growing recruitment companies and listed on the Sunday Times International Fast Track.   Episode Outline and Highlights [2:08] The industry is roaring back! Listen to Doug's assessment of the current market. [5:36] Balancing humanity and technology in recruitment. [6:58] Building a business with James Caan.   [12:23] “Observe the masses and do the opposite.”  [18:30] How the ‘recruitment to recruitment' industry was pioneered. [20:27] Comparison between the UK and US recruiting industries. [27:34] Doug shares the humble beginnings of Humana International  Bouncing Back From Failure to Build a Business with James Caan In our interview, Doug describes his colourful career in executive search starting in the 80's with MRI (Management Recruiters International) and how a failure to achieve one of his life's ambitions ultimately led to him building a business with James Caan.  Doug describes how he put his entire life savings into running for a seat in the US Congress and lost everything. While this was a crushing disappointment at the time, this setback opened the door to a new opportunity -- one he most likely would never have entertained had his congressional ambitions been fulfilled.  When James Caan invited him to move to the UK in 1992 to start a new business, it didn't seem on the surface like the incredible, career-defining moment that it later proved to be.  At the time, James was a charismatic young “upstart” with an office above a Fish and Chip shop.  However, Doug recognized the leadership qualities that would eventually enable James to achieve spectacular success in building and scaling companies globally. As Doug puts it, “James could attract people and get them to buy into the mission and get them to really want it.”  A Solid Career of Wisdom and Experience Doug's more than three decades of career in recruitment enabled him to gain experience and learnings you will find valuable in today's competitive environment. In our conversation, you will hear him share how James Caan revolutionised the executive search industry in the UK and pioneered the ‘rec to rec' sector.  He highlights one of the keys to James' extraordinary success -- a philosophy that Doug believes still resonates today: “Observe the masses, and do the opposite.”  The Differences Between the US and UK Recruitment Industry and the Invention of the ‘Recruitment to Recruitment' Having worked and lived in both the UK and the US, Doug shared his observations and personal opinion on the differences between recruiting in both markets. In particular, we discussed the “rec to rec” space since Doug witnessed the birth of that industry. Hear his insights about this subject and how it is relevant to the ongoing evolution of the recruitment industry. Doug Bugie Bio and Contact Info Doug Bugie's career in recruitment spans over three decades where he's mainly worked in the niche of recruitment franchising. He is the president of Next Wave Global Franchise Systems LLC, which has formed a strategic partnership with FPC National to exclusively sell FPC Franchises. Doug has extensive experience in the recruitment franchise industry - from being an investor, top executive, to becoming a consultant. He was CEO and president of Antal International Network - an executive recruiting company with 130 offices spanning 33 countries, with Tony Goodwin. He was the CEO of Norman Broadbent, based in the UK. Arriving in London in 1992, Doug also co-founded the recruitment franchise Humana International with James Caan, the entrepreneur on the well known UK TV show Dragons Den. Humana, in only 7 years, grew to over 200 offices in 27 countries and over $90m. Humana was awarded the top international franchise in the UK by the British Franchise Association. Notes from Tom:As organizations recruit remotely for the first time, how can they unlock the vast potential of a global talent pool and successfully navigate the corresponding challenge?I spoke with Chantelle Cassin of Propeller Aero on how to build a global recruitment strategy and execute it effectively. Her advice to companies who are stepping outside a local recruitment strategy for the first time? Adopt a balanced approach.“You can't create a cookie-cutter process and expect it to work equally well across borders, but you should retain enough consistency that you aren't compromising your company values. Decide where to stick to your guns, and where to adapt to local practices,” says Chantelle. Here are her top tips for researching recruitment in a new market:When in doubt, ask the candidates: We've all gotten so comfortable with Google that we can forget to just talk to people. Chantelle's team has learned the most by simply asking candidates in interviews about their preferences.Leverage agencies: Talent acquisition teams tend to have a love/hate relationship with agencies, but don't write them off. Agencies are very familiar with the local area they serve and have lots of valuable insight.Expand your network: Tech blogs and LinkedIn articles are great places to start, but don't neglect the human element. While you're on LinkedIn, find talent acquisition professionals who have worked in the country you're researching, and ask if they'd be willing to answer a few questions. Odds are, you'll be surprised by how many people say yes—and as a perk, you'll grow your network in the process.Trying to hire “unicorns” for your org? Out-bid the competition with open communication and continually come back to the drawing board with hiring managers. Be different, not better. Create an escalation process for difficult roles and be prepared to make adjustments. As recruiters and people partners they understand the value of building meaningful relationships, both at work and outside. While they are based in different locations (Berlin and New York), they share a similar perspective on living in a hectic and fast-paced environment, which includes the difficulty of focusing on one's own mental well-being while keeping up with ever growing demands. To manage professional and personal growth nowadays can quickly turn into an everyday struggle that needs to be put under control before it gets too stressful. To this point, Hilary and Selin discuss the necessity for people to be self-aware and open to communication. The second part of our interview is centered around the concept of resilience.Specifically, we become acquainted with the challenge of bouncing back from tough times and connecting with people who are headed towards a common goal. After all, a successful organization is a living and breathing organism made of individuals who believe in the same values.Among the many outtakes from this Stepsero episode, we find the ones below to be particularly meaningful:Make time for yourself, no matter how busy you are.Don't underestimate the importance of breathing. Identify areas of strength and weakness, and act upon them.Look for the right information, either via a podcast or a good read.Get comfortable with opening up to someone, whether a friend, a colleague, a therapist, or a mentor. The sooner you do so, the quicker you will realize that you are not alone. Our Guests: Selin Songur & Hilary Gardner Selin navigates her career in a similar way to her life values: Authentic, honest and people focused. She is happiest when part of building an inclusive and progressive culture. Her most recent learning and reflection on wellbeing in the workplace comes from her role as a Senior Recruiting and People Partner at SoundCloud. Selin is also on the founder journey, with Wild Mission, an organization that supports people who are ready to change the way they eat in a collective effort to respect animals and preserve our planet. In 2010, Hilary started her recruiting career at a boutique agency, focusing on social and mobile gaming. While there, she learned the ropes and hustle of technical recruitment - and her love for startups was born. From there, she joined the US office of a large Japanese gaming company, helping to double the office in size in a short five months. But New York's bright lights pulled her to the East Coast, where she joined the social AdTech start up Adaptly, centralizing, building, and maintaining all recruitment channels. Tesla Financial and Legal Woes as SEC Seeks to Hold Elon Musk in Contempt | Ed McCabe

In this Special Episode of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Ed McCabe about the latest woes plaguing Tesla after the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently alleged in a federal filing that its CEO Elon Musk, violated a settlement with the agency when he tweeted in February about the electric carmaker's 2019 production targets. Midway through the episode, the two are joined by Lawrence Fossi, known by his pen name as Montana Skeptic, and the three continue their conversation for the rest of the episode and into the overtime segment. When considering the performance of Tesla’s stock in the face of sober calculations, one cannot help but be reminded of Benjamin Graham’s famous quote: "In the short run, the market is a voting machine but in the long run it is a weighing machine.” For anyone looking to weigh the merits of Tesla’s valuation, he or she would be best served by obtaining a degree in forensic accounting. For anyone looking to understand how or why the stock has remained as high as it has while the company has been busy liquidating assets, shutting down distribution points, and restructuring operations in order to keep the electricity running, he or she will likely need to rely upon the expertise of cultural anthropologists and theologians. The immediate danger for Elon and Tesla is one of insolvency and lifeless demand. On a personal level, it was recently reported that Musk’s banker, Morgan Stanley, who likely holds most or all of his margin debt, extended itself further last December by making mortgage loans on five of Musk’s California mansions. Elon took out $61 million in mortgages: four in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles and one in the Bay Area. The loans, signed in the final days of 2018, represent about $50 million in new borrowing. Considering Tesla’s deteriorating financial position in the face of cratering demand, massive mismanagement, and continued disarray in its manufacturing and logistics operations, it is instructive to know that the CEO may conduct his personal finances with comparable degrees of recklessness and malpractice. If Tesla’s share price continues to decline, Musk will eventually need to post more collateral, which means approaching the Tesla board and asking it to waive its pledging limits of company stock. Assuming the board gives him the waiver and the stock continues to drop, Morgan Stanley will be forced to begin selling collateral to recoup some of the outstanding loan. This could cause the bottom to fall out very quickly, for both Tesla, as well as Elon Musk. As far as demand is concerned, the picture has gone from alarming (going off a publicly available spreadsheet that tracks VIN numbers) to downright nightmarish (the rushed slashing of the Model 3 price). Pictures of lots stacked with ownerless Model 3’s have been circulating on the Internet for months. There is also a theory that the number of Model 3’s being returned to Tesla is much higher than is being reported and that this helps to explain the persistent gap seen since September between the number of Model 3’s Tesla claims to have delivered and the number showing up as registered. The theory is that this is the result of a strategic decision on the part of Tesla to delay registering newly sold cars for 3-4 weeks in order to provide an opportunity to resell the car with a “clean” title to unsuspecting new buyers. On top of all this, Tesla’s list of executive departures continues to grow by the day with the VP of Engineering, the General Counsel, the VP of Global Recruiting, and the Chief Financial Officer among the company’s latest casualties. In short, Tesla appears to be in the midst of an informal restructuring and liquidation process being driven on the fly by a Shakespearean CEO whose personal finances and singularly large ego are so fragile that nothing seems capable of standing in his way. As always, this episode of Hidden Forces is for informational purposes only and should not be relied upon as the basis for financial decisions. Drone pilots are reporting making over $100,000 a year, and companies are encouraging young STEM students to look at the drone market for their future. What kinds of careers exist in drones, and what does it take to become a drone professional? On today's Propelling podcast, our host spoke with Eva Spexard, the HR Manager EMEA & Global Recruiting for Microdrones. With drone technology becoming so much more complex than just "flying a kite", so to speak, the two discussed the new opportunities for college drone scholarships, some recent technological developments, the traits that are looked for in new hires in the industry, and what a possible luxury version of a drone might look like in the near future. "What I see in my job, on a daily basis, is professional tools for professional people that help them doing their job. So, it's really surveying, land development, it's infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring. It's so much more than just taking pictures from above. So, I really think the drone industry is the next automotive industry," Spexard said.
