After an unfortunate firing and a spell of bad luck, she stumbles into a chance encounter with The Villain and ends up hired as his personal assistant. While yes, there are body parts swinging from the ceiling, his castle runs much like any business and Evie can handle the paperwork. Devin's key takeaways were: This novel highlights a recent publishing trend of storylines and authors becoming popular on social media sites like TikTok before they are published, then being signed by publishing companies to ride the wave of their popularity. Pros include increased diversity and a resurgence of popularity of reading in the zeitgeist, but Holly and Devin review cons like rushed editing and expected tropes as well.  Maehrer explores the idea that even villains deserve loyalty, empathy, and maybe even a decent lunch break. It's a workplace comedy... if the workplace had torture chambers. The absurdity of running an evil empire like an office is what makes the “villainous job” theme shine. Capitalism meets chaos magic. While not spicy at all, there are romantic elements to the story. The push-pull between danger and attraction for Evie and The Villain is delicious, especially when the boss could literally smite someone - but instead just broods silently when Evie talks to another guy. The announcement that former President Joe Biden has cancer probably isn't much of a surprise considering that his entire presidency was nothing but the final years of a diseased, senile old man. These facts were covered up by a media that lied in Soviet style so brazenly that it's comical. Of course, now his body will be burdened with all of the sins of the Democrat party and cast outside of the city to be slaughtered. We have to remember that the rumors of excessive drug use by Biden, probably administered without consent, are not much different than the drug use of the president of Ukraine, who is clearly a coke head, or the recent exposure of the leaders of France, Germany and the UK who were caught with a nice bag of cocaine on the table with a drug spoon. Even the current US president is a drug addict with McDonald's and the coke that ends with cola.Perhaps the use of various drugs from caffeine to processed food - which includes hormones, dyes, and preservatives - to the more extreme drugs like cocaine, heroin, opioids, and the like, plays some role in the increased notion that the world is getting more dangerous, violent, etc., or at least why mental health issues have exploded in diagnosis. Maybe the world is becoming more dangerous, or based on crime statistics, if they are being reported consistently and honestly, maybe the world is only being perceived as such. This could be the result of a population that is paranoid, anxious, confused, and chronically ill in body and mind. This could have something to do with the excessive consumption of legal and illegal drugs, and ultra-processed foods, all things that can induce paranoia, anxiety, delusion, anger and violence. In fact 3/4 or more of all crime in the United States can be directly related to drug abuse of some sort. Just consider the attitude of someone who doesn't get their caffeine hit in the morning, or how people are sincerely protesting the removal of chemicals and toxins from the US food supply. Considering how drastically opioids can change the brain, and considering the massively increased usage of things like psilocybin in the USA, it is no wonder that collectively people are leaping off the edge in everything from conspiracies to a increasingly nastier desire for one conflict after another. In fact, up to 30% of people who take things like psilocybin have poor reactions that result in anxiety and paranoia, brought on by the wrong setting, dose, quality, and mind set. Combining all of these factors certainly produces, alongside social media and mainstream media, a consistent set of culprits that are contributing to the perception that the world is becoming angrier. It's almost like some have been dosed with the fictional fear toxin of Dr Crane. Episode 61 Whispers. The town of Welch, Oklahoma was full of whispers after the bodies of Danny and Kathy Freeman were located in the burned out Freeman home. Whispers about drugs, wrongful deaths, police involvement, intentionally botched investigations, and whispers about where the girls were and who had taken them. The whispers swirled around allegations related to Shane Freeman's death after a Craig County Sheriff's Deputy shot him on a rural Oklahoma road nearly a year before. The whispers discussed accusations of drug debts and methamphetamine rings. The whispers built theories. And some of the whispers would eventually harden into statements, allegations, and testimony but it would take years, decades even. THE SHOWDOWN on Mount Carmel is even more spectacular than we've been taught. The story is sensational on its surface: The prophet Elijah, one of the few prophets of God still active in the northern kingdom of Israel, tells King Ahab to his face that there will be no rain until Elijah says so. Then he flees from the king and hides out for three years. During that time, the prophet was fed by ravens at the brook Cherith somewhere east of the Jordan until the drought caused the stream to dry up. Then Elijah traveled to Phoenicia and lodged with a widow of Zarephath in the region of Sidon. Because of the famine, she was prepared to make one last meal and then starve to death with her son (or children, according to the Septuagint). Miraculously, the woman did not run out of flour or oil during the entire time Elijah stayed with her. The account of the miracle of Elijah bringing the widow's son back from the dead has a deeper meaning when you understand a little of the religion of the Phoenicians (who were Canaanites, which in turn is just a geographic designation for the Amorites in Canaan). The patron deity of Sidon was Eshmun, the Phoenician name for the Greek demigod Asclepius. The Greeks believed Asclepius was the half-divine son of Apollo, a healer of such skill that he was able to cure death. (This led Hades to complain to Zeus that Asclepius was disrupting the natural order of things, so Zeus killed Asclepius.) The point is this: God, through Elijah, demonstrated that He, Yahweh, was the one God who truly has power over life and death. Likewise, Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal has a deeper meaning. This was a literal battle between Yahweh and the Baal worshipped by Jezebel and her pagan father, Ethbaal, king of Tyre. Ethbaal was a priest of Astarte, the Canaanite version of Ishtar, the Babylonian goddess of sex and war (which explains a lot about Jezebel). The kicker is that the Baal of Tyre was probably Melqart, which was the Phoenician name for Herakles—better known to us as Hercules. This explains some of Elijah's taunts while Jezebel's prophets danced, shouted, and cut themselves to summon their small-G god. It also helps us understand why Elijah had twelve vessels of water poured over the sacrifice and the wood on the altar. It didn't just represent the twelve tribes of Israel and make the sacrifice more difficult to burn, it mocked a libation (drink offering) ritual called yarid that is documented in Jewish and Roman texts and inscriptions as late as the 3rd century AD, when Emperor Diocletian performed the yarid at Tyre for Hercules! This also connects to Mount Hermon, where scholars Edward Lipiński and Charles Clermont-Ganneau noted, based on the site drawing by Sir Charles Warren in 1869 (when he discovered the Watcher Stone in a temple near the peak of the mountain), that the summit of Hermon is scooped out like a giant bowl—probably to receive these offerings. Lipiński wrote that this means the Watchers, led by Shemihazah, did not descend in the days of Jared, but in the days when the yarid was performed on the mountain. So, Elijah's actions on Mount Carmel were directed not just at Baal or Melqart/Hercules, but at the “sons of God” who long ago tried to take dominion of Earth away from the children of Adam and Eve. Chas Smith (@BeachGrit) is a luminous figure in surfing, an adept journalist, and author. Born in San Jose, California in 1976, Smith's family uprooted and landed in Coos Bay, Oregon where he learned to surf. After studying intercultural studies in undergrad, Smith graduated with a master's in linguistics, going on to study in Egypt and at Oxford. Following a story he published in Australia Surfing Life about surfing in Yemen in the wake of 9/11, Smith went on to report in Lebanon, Somalia, Israel-Palestine, and wound up a captive of Hezbollah reporting for Current TV. In the early-aughts, Smith worked for Vice. Soon, he joined Stab magazine at the behest of Derek Rielly, then editor-in-chief, and they set in on an unparalleled era in surf journalism. Some of Stab's more controversial content garnered unsavory public spats that earned Smith some anti-Semitic epithets, and then in 2014, Smith and Reilly began Beach Grit—a deep well of incendiary, tongue-in-cheek honesty drenched in satire, sans filter.
