In the early hours of March 15th 2024, a woman walked into a hospital in the city of Boston and reported she had been raped.The following day, Dublin firefighter Terrence Crosbie (38) was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport when he was boarding a plane to fly back to Ireland.Last week, after a six-day trial and more than 22 hours of jury deliberations, a Boston judge declared a mistrial after the jury failed to make a unanimous decision.Mr Crosbie, who has spent 15 months in jail, has been sent back to prison until his next trial, which is set for October 14th.Today on In the News, investigative journalist Susan Zalkind discusses the details of the Boston rape trial.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. This is an episode of massive importance. My deepest thanks to my guest, Becky Nulle, who endured horrific experiences of rape and sexual assault from multiple perpetrators, one of which was the Deputy Superintendent of Chicago Schools, James Moffat, in the late 70's and early 80's. Becky was one of 5 victims that suffered rape and sexual assault from Moffat who was finally charged and prosecuted in the mid-80's.   But Becky's story starts with parents who, as she puts it, were neglectful. Becky was victimized by bullies at school, vulnerable, and easy prey to “Darrel” who promised her protection but became her first sexual abuser. He was also the person who trafficked Becky to Moffat. And then, as a result of Becky searching for safety and connection, she fell victim to several other adults who took advantage of Becky's vulnerability and exposure on the streets of Chicago.  This story is tragic…and yet triumphant. Because Becky sought out help and healing. And found it through her therapist, Jan Spangler, who introduced Becky to brainspotting, a very effective trauma therapy method, according to Becky.  She says that brainspotting saved her life, helping her recognize and deal with her hidden traumas, saved her marriage, and provided her with the ability to pursue her bachelor's degree, as well as the pathway of writing a book.  The book is Anger, Alcohol, and Healing through Brainspotting, now available for pre-release ordering. ( Becky also provided me with a brief bio that I want to include: Becky Nulle is a soon to be published author and a volunteer who helps the Hmong community in Northern Wisconsin. She is a Sexual Assault/Rape Survivor of James Moffat, a powerful man who was second in charge of the Chicago Public School System at one time. Becky is married, has a Doberman and eight ducks. She is currently working on her Bachelors Degree in Communications. This is an episode that you'll not want to miss. Stories of teen sexting scandals, cyberbullying, and image-based sexual abuse have become commonplace fixtures of the digital age, with many adults struggling to identify ways to monitor young people's digital engagement. In When Rape Goes Viral: Youth and Sexual Assault in the Digital Age (Univ of California Press, 2023), Anna Gjika argues that rather than focusing on surveillance, we should examine such incidents for what they tell us about youth peer cultures and the gender norms and sexual ethics governing their interactions. Drawing from interviews with teens and high-profile cases of mediated juvenile sexual assault, Gjika exposes the deeply unequal and heteronormative power dynamics informing teens' intimate relationships and online practices, and she critically interrogates the role of digital cultures and broader social values in sanctioning abuse. The book also explores the consequences of social media and digital evidence for young victim-survivors and perpetrators of sexual assault, detailing the paradoxical capacities of technology for social and legal responses to gender-based violence. In this episode, I respond to a challenging and emotionally heavy listener question: how can Stoicism claim that only Virtue is Good and only Vice is Evil, even in the face of horrific acts like rape? This isn't a theoretical exercise in cruelty—it's a serious inquiry into Stoic ethical nuance. The heart of the issue is understanding what Stoicism means when it calls something "indifferent," and why it insists that moral value resides not in actions themselves, but in the moral character of the person choosing them. I explain the two definitions of indifferents in Stoicism: one refers to things that don't affect our own character (if we're not the actor), and the other refers to things whose moral value is undefined until context is applied. Through that lens, I show how horrific acts like rape are always unjust—and thus always vicious—not because of the physical actions involved, but because of the context in which they occur. This episode isn't easy listening, but it's essential for any serious student of Stoicism who wants to understand how Stoic ethics holds together even in the hardest moral cases.
