The "rape of Nanking," the Japanese military slaughter of 300,000 Chinese civilians, is supposed to be one of the worst atrocities of the twentieth century. The Allied established Tokyo Tribunal found 100,000 dead and the Nanking tribunal, three times as many. However, a University of Nanking study by Dr. Lewis Smythe, who was in the city when the Japanese took control, found that even with underestimations the number of dead was about 31,000 people. Many of them were also armed and died from direct combat with the Japanese. The number of dead in the city itself was only a few thousands and the entire surrounding countryside had to be included to get even above 10,000 dead.  Yet today the Chinese government has made it illegal to question this and other historical narratives; they also demand perpetual apologies from the Japanese despite their more recent murder of upwards of 60 million of their own people from starvation and mass murder quotas. The 2011 JAPAN-CHINA JOINT HISTORY RESEARCH REPORT also agreed that the Imperial military was given strict orders to not behave in the ways accused. Even if some did, and thousands were murdered, the numbers are nowhere even close to triple digits. This is important for historical purposes, but also because Nanking remains a major geopolitical issue between Japan, China and even Taiwan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-7-VFiuyd0https://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/files/100512970.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://en.wikisource.org/wiki/War_Damage_in_the_Nanking_area_Dec._1937_to_Mar._1938https://news.web.nhk/newsweb/na/na-k10015198361000*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. The Rape of Nanking. Audiobook Excerpt. Iris Chang (Author) In December 1937, in the capital of China, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking and within weeks not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured and murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the story of this atrocity- one of the worst in world history- continues to be denied by the Japanese government. The Rape of Nanking tells the story from three perspectives: that of the Japanese soldiers who performed it; of the Chinese civilians who endured it; and finally of a group of Europeans and Americans who refused to abandon the city and were able to create a safety zone that saved almost 300,000 Chinese. It was Iris Chang who discovered the diaries of the German leader of this rescue effort, John Rabe, whom she calls the "Oskar Schindler of China." A loyal supporter of Adolf Hitler, but far from the terror planned in his Nazi-controlled homeland, he worked tirelessly to save the innocent from slaughter.

How can repeated failures across the criminal justice system allow a dangerous offender to remain a threat? In this episode of Crime Time Inc. Weekly News, former detectives Tom Wood and Simon McLean examine the case of Simon Levy and the murders of Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo and Sheryl Wilkins.Tom and Simon look beyond the crimes themselves to the series of decisions and system failures surrounding Levy's offending history. They discuss acknowledged errors involving the Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and Crown Prosecution Service, and examine how information was handled as his offending escalated. The discussion includes delays in charging, failures to place crucial information before the court when bail was being considered, inadequate monitoring as a registered sex offender, missed court appearances and the decision to downgrade his risk assessment from high to medium.Drawing on decades of real investigative experience, Tom and Simon consider where responsibility lies when individual officers may be capable and conscientious but the systems around them fail. Tom reflects on his own experience as a Senior Investigating Officer, the importance of supervision, properly resourced murder squads, intelligence systems such as HOLMES, and the need to make sure critical information is actually joined together. They also discuss accountability when investigations go wrong — including the extraordinary prospect of officers involved in the Levy investigation themselves facing investigation — and ask whether these were isolated mistakes or evidence of a much wider systemic problem. As Tom puts it, policing needs good people and good systems. In this case, their conclusion is stark:The dots were not joined up.Tom Wood and Simon McLean bring decades of experience in murder investigations, serious crime, undercover policing and senior operational command to examine what happened, what should have happened, and what lessons policing must learn.Contains discussion of murder, sexual offending and violence.Chapters00:00 Cold Open00:48 Simon Levy: Two Murders and a Criminal Justice Failure01:46 Sex-Offender Risk & Missed Warning Signs02:58 The Timeline: Assaults, Rape, Bail and Murder04:08 Inconclusive Postmortems & Forensic Delays06:28 SIO Accountability & Investigating the Investigators08:50 Arrested, Released — Then a Second Murder10:48 “The Dots Were Not Joined Up”: Resources, HOLMES & Murder Squads12:07 Bail, Monitoring, Missed Court Dates & Risk Downgrade13:28 Portobello, Robert Black & Why Appearances Can Deceive15:44 Assumptions, Bias & Judging People by AppearanceReal cases. The Summer of Rollin continues...and Jean Rollin is starting to become Jean Rollin. In Episode 575, we journey into The Shiver of the Vampires (1971) and Requiem for a Vampire (1971), two films that show Rollin evolving from an experimental filmmaker finding his voice into an auteur who has seemingly discovered exactly what kind of cinema he wants to make. With The Shiver of the Vampires, Rollin pushes further into his fascination with nudity, sexual liberation, desire and the female form, while surrounding it all with the crumbling castles, deserted landscapes, gothic imagery and dreamlike atmosphere that were rapidly becoming his trademark. But beneath the naked bodies and vampire mythology is something far more interesting: isolation.Rollin's characters often seem detached from the real world, wandering through beautiful spaces that feel simultaneously romantic, threatening and completely unreal. His films aren't simply stories happening in strange locations, the locations themselves become part of the story. Then comes Requiem for a Vampire. And Rollin basically decides that dialogue is optional. For almost 40 minutes, the film barely speaks a word, instead allowing imagery, music, movement and atmosphere to carry the narrative. It's a bold, egotistical and utterly fascinating decision, one that could have collapsed into pretension but instead becomes one of the clearest demonstrations of Rollin's confidence as a filmmaker. We'll explore how Requiem strips away conventional storytelling and replaces it with something closer to a cinematic dream, a film where logic takes a back seat to mood, composition, sexuality, fantasy and the hypnotic power of the image.Along the way we'll explore:The evolution of Rollin's vampire mythology.Nudity, eroticism and sexual liberation in his cinema. The beauty and isolation of his locations.Rollin's growing obsession with dream logic over conventional narrative. The audacity of almost 40 minutes without dialogue. How these films cement the visual and thematic DNA of a Rollin movie. What makes his cinema so instantly recognisable, and so difficult to imitate.By this point, Rollin isn't simply making vampire movies. He's creating Rollin movies.Beautiful, bizarre, erotic, melancholic, surreal and often completely unconcerned with whether the audience knows exactly what the hell is going on.So once again, pour the wine, head for the nearest crumbling castle and prepare to lose yourself in the strange, seductive world of Jean Rollin. The Summer of Rollin continues...The following texts and documentaries were used in this series:Lost Girls: The Phantasmagorical Cinema of Jean Rollin - Samm DeighanOrchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin (2022) - Kat Ellinger and Dima BallinIndicator 4KUHD Releases of both The Rape of the Vampire & The Nude Vampire - Street date June 2023.The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn't Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved ItShiver of the Vampires:Duncan: 4.5Requiem for a Vampire:Duncan: 5Our new RSS Feed: https://anchor.fm/s/13ba6ef0/podcast/rssCheck out the show on Anchor, iTunes, TuneIn & on Stitcher Radio. Please leave us feedback on iTunes, podcastunderthestairs@gmail.com and follow us on Facebook.Timecode For Episode 575:00:00:00 - Intro 00:03:44 - Shiver of the Vampires00:14:18 - Requiem for a Vampire00:26:54 - The Indicator 4KUHD's 00:32:14 - Closing the Show

Once again, Darrell Castle discusses war but with a little diplomacy and an historical reminder that technology constantly changes but human nature never changes. Transcription / Notes THE HUMILIATION FACTOR Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday the 7th day of August in the year of our Lord 2026. I'm afraid my beat is war once again but with a little diplomacy and an historical reminder that technology constantly changes but human nature never changes. For the history lesson I have to go back to December 7th, 1941, and perhaps even a few days before that. This story is important because of the title to this report but also because yesterday, August 6 was the 81st anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan. The United States was engaged in diplomacy with Japan regarding Japan's invasion of China and Roosevelt's refusal to sell them more oil until they left China. The Japanese had to import virtually all their raw materials and they got oil primarily from the U.S. The Japanese had behaved so horribly in China that Roosevelt tried to persuade the Europeans to join him in a conditional boycott but they refused so he decided to do it himself. If you want to know more about how the Japanese behaved in China I recommend Iris Chang's book “The Rape of Nanchang, The Forgotten Holocaust of World War ll. Well, at least the two sides were talking to each other through diplomats around a conference table in Washington D.C. The Japanese knew that if the U.S. continued to refuse to sell them oil they would have to get it by conquering the oil and rubber rich nations of the South Pacific so they made plans to do just that. Those nations could not be conquered with the U.S. Navy at large in the Pacific so Japan's plan included that Navy's destruction in an attack we know as Pearl Harbor. Admiral Yamamoto, commander of the Japanese Fleet, had given orders that a war warning had to given to the American diplomats about one hour before the attack but delays of various kinds caused the warning to be delivered one hour after battleship row was burning. The Japanese believed that when the decadent, luxury loving, American people were confronted with this debacle they would demand that their leaders negotiate a way out of it. There were an awful lot of American members of Congress and the Senate who were in office because they were opposed to fighting European wars. There was an America first contingent which measured about 140 members. How could any nation so divided muster the will to fight a long bloody war, but the Japanese were catastrophically wrong in their assessment. Immediately after the attack the America first group voted to disband. Charles Linberg, the most outspoken and most famous antiwar advocate tried to join the Army Air Corps. Men lined up around the block in every city in America. School boys lied about their age to enlist. Keep in mind that in Japan every radio receiver in every military unit was tuned to American broadcasts in order to discern the mood of the people. Military transcriptionists took down every word of every broadcast and on December 8th at 12:30 PM they were turned in for FDR's speech. He spoke for only 6 minutes and none of it was a call for patience or negotiation but instead he called it a day that will live in infamy. The American people and the President were fueled to righteous anger by the deceptive nature of it. The term sneak attack was on everyone's lips and worse because it happened while the two sides were negotiating. That's a long history report, folks, but there is a reason for it. The reason is that another sneak attack, conducted while the two sides were negotiating has now happened. The anger, the determination to fight on no matter how long it took that fueled American resolve is now being felt by citizens of The Islamic Republic of Iran. Yes American diplomats were negotiating with Iranian diplomats when the U.S, and Israeli bombers struck. The attack didn't just destroy Iranian military targets, but it killed their supreme leader and almost his whole family including his 14-month-old granddaughter. The next day American bombs struck a girls school and around 160 little girls were killed but just to make sure it was hit again. How are these people supposed to feel about negotiating with America to end this war. How can they be expected to ever trust an American's word again. The problem continues almost daily as U.S. negotiators, if there are any besides the president, continue to go back on their word which is diplomat speak for lying. For example, the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding the president announced the other day called for Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz. The next day the president reneged on that point. I read someone the other day and I can't remember who said it, but he said President Trump should get the Nobel Peace Prize because he has ended the Iran War 7 times and number 8 is coming soon. Think about the mindset that the U.S. sneak attack must have created in the minds of the Iranian people. Before it happened there did seem to be a lot of unrest and a lot of division. People were in the streets protesting the harsh measures of the regime and that regime proceeded to kill thousands of them. I imagine the President was told that his sneak attack would have the same effect on the Iranian people that the Japanese thought Pearl Harbor would have on the American people. Both those assumptions were catastrophically wrong. Instead of causing the Iranian people to riot and overthrow their government it brought them together. The hated Mullahs were once again respected leaders. Thousands attended the Ayatollah's funeral. I think it was Mark Twain who said history doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes. Now the situation is so much worse for the U.S. and of course for Israel which was, apparently, the reason for the sneak attack. The Strait is at least a very dangerous place and ships can't sail without extreme danger. The entire world's economy teeters on the brink of depression. Oil and other needed mineral resources are soaring in price since about 20% of them have to pass through that chokehold. Meanwhile the President has announced a new deal being brokered by his Board of Peace involving peace in Gaza. The lynch pin would require Hamas, a terrorist group financed by Iran, to give up its arms and identify all its tunnels etc. In other words, Hamas would cease to exist and Israel would leave Gaza so that the U.S. and the Middle East members of the Board such as the Saudis and the Gulf States could rebuild it and everyone would prosper. The moment the deal was announced Netanyahu said the President sent it to him and he didn't like it. He said Israel would not leave Gaza until Hamas completely disarmed and Hamas Says it will not disarm until Israel leaves. Qatar is apparently kicking Hamas out of its country and rumors have it moving its operations to Turkey which is apparently the President's hope for the role of ensuring Middle East peace. My point in all this is that it is humiliating and embarrassing, or it should be. This country is supposed to be trusted because we have laws and rules, and we are supposed to stand for something. There are things we simply will never do and financing another country's crimes is one of those things. The first law of the land of course is the Constitution because it says it is the supreme law of the land. It restricts the power of leaders and they all take an oath to it but for most that means nothing. The standard of completely disarmed is virtually impossible to know or measure and that leaves the door open for this conflict to continue indefinitely. In the meantime, Reuters reports that the U.S. has expended more than 80% of its antimissile defense missiles. The Iranians are very smart people and they have been for a long time. They just keep putting missiles into U.S. bases and into Israel knowing that only a few will get through but it requires the U.S. to expend its supply and what then. The President announces what turns out to be a temporary halt to bombing, I guess. The U.S. position with regard to Israel and the Middle East is indefensible and I guess that's why they no longer try to defend it. The attitude seems to be the old one made famous by Baghdad Bob. You are not seeing this so just move on because everything is fine. I chose humiliation as the title of this Report because it is humiliating for a great nation to force people to pay for their own destruction. A foreign nation somehow persuades the U.S. to give it money so it can use that money to buy U.S. politicians who will then vote to fund its expansionist wars. I'll close this report on our humiliation with a few words from old friend and economist Bill Bonner. “No matter how cynical you are, its probably not enough. Perhaps Donald Trump is playing a different game altogether. He marshalls DOGE to cut spending but does not actually cut a dime out of the swollen federal budget. He makes grand theater out of tariffs but trade deficits continue unmolested. No more foreign wars, he pledges and then attacks Iran.” Finally, folks, the way out of this seems very difficult to bear but wouldn't it be better to quit now so we can manage the withdrawal rather than wait until we are forced out. The Iran War was a mistake we should admit and we are sorry we made it. We are especially sorry for those Iranian school girls and we will pay compensation to their families. It's the same decision made by the French after Dein Bin Phu when we decided to take up their war. At least that's the way I see it, Until next time folks, This is Darrell Castle, Thanks for listening.

The girl he raped was 15 at the time. During the trial, the dress she wore was produced in court, and she was asked if she was wearing underwear at the time. Rules have changed, but it still seems acceptable to imply that survivors of sexual assault somehow brought it on themselves…Joining Seán to discuss this is Sarah Grace, Solicitor, sexual assault survivor and author of ‘Ash and Salt - From Survival to Empowerment after Sexual Assault'.If you were affected by this topic in any way, help is available.24-Hour National Helpline for the Rape Crisis Centre: 1800 77 8888.

Weird Darkness: Stories of the Paranormal, Supernatural, Legends, Lore, Mysterious, Macabre, Unsolved

This episode covers real-life horror far more extreme than usual, including a Russian professor arrested in 2011 for keeping the mummified corpses of 29 women and girls in his apartment, each one fitted with a hidden music box. It also includes the story of a 19th-century whiskey heir who paid six handkerchiefs for a 10-year-old girl so he could watch cannibals kill and eat her, and the theory that Alexander the Great was declared dead nearly a week before he actually died. Content is more graphic than usual, so listener discretion is advised.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/necropolystREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8e5emeCHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = The Foreboding00:00:47.354 = Show Open00:01:58.356 = Alexander the Great00:05:52.710 = The Ravenous Beast of Gévaudan00:09:41.943 = The Rape and Burial of Jessica Lunsford ***00:11:55.911 = The Dyatlov Pass Incident00:15:29.080 = The Torture Dungeon of Leonard Lake and Charles Ng00:19:10.197 = Robert The Doll00:23:08.785 = The Disappearance and Eerie Return of Bobby Dunbar ***00:26:33.271 = Albert Fish – The Brooklyn Vampire00:30:06.498 = The Strange Disappearance of the Sodder Children00:34:28.570 = Anatoly Moskvin, The Russian Who Mummified Dead Girls00:38:41.505 = The Jameson Whiskey Cannibal ***00:42:29.572 = Show Close*** = Begins immediately after inserted ad breakLISTEN ON PODCAST APPS: Look for this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, and other podcast apps. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: March 2022Weird Darkness this episode gathers real-life horror too extreme for scripted television, spanning from ancient Macedonia to the Congo basin and landing, along the way, in a Russian apartment stacked with mummified girls. It opens with Alexander the Great, who collapsed in Babylon in 323 B.C. after a 24-hour drinking binge triggered a sudden fever, a stabbing pain in his back, and creeping paralysis that eventually left him speechless; doctors pronounced him dead at 32. His body reportedly stayed "pure and fresh" for six days afterward, evidence ancient Greeks took as proof of his divinity. In 2019, Dr. Katherine Hall of New Zealand's University of Otago proposed in the Ancient History Bulletin that Alexander actually suffered from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that paralyzes the body while leaving the mind fully intact; since fourth-century-B.C. doctors checked for breath rather than a pulse, Hall's theory suggests Alexander may have been declared dead nearly a week before he actually died, and was buried alive. From there, the story moves to 18th-century France, where a wolf-like creature killed or mauled close to 300 people across three years in the Gévaudan region, most of them women and children. Fourteen-year-old shepherdess Jeanne Boulet was the first confirmed victim in 1764; a fifteen-year-old girl killed a month later survived long enough to describe her attacker as "a horrible beast". Militia leader Jean-Baptiste Duhamel organized a 30,000-strong hunting party, and King Louis XV eventually dispatched his own bodyguard, François Antoine, who killed a large wolf in September 1765; the attacks resumed within months regardless. A farmer named Jean Chastel is credited with killing the actual beast using silver bullets, reportedly after finding human remains inside its stomach.Next, the episode turns to the 2005 murder of nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford in Homosassa, Florida. Convicted sex offender John Evander Couey broke into her family's home, took her to his trailer, raped her over three days, sealed her inside garbage bags, and buried her alive in his yard while she still clutched a stuffed dolphin her father had won her at a state fair. Prosecutors later determined Jessica may have still been alive in the house during Couey's first police interview. Couey was convicted of first-degree murder and kidnapping in March 2007 and died on death row of natural causes in 2009.From Florida, the episode jumps to the Ural Mountains and the Dyatlov Pass incident of January 1959, when hiking leader Igor Dyatlov and eight fellow students from the Ural Polytechnic Institute died during an expedition toward Otorten Mountain. Investigators found their tent slashed open from the inside and shoeless footprints leading nearly a mile into the forest; the first bodies recovered, dressed only in underwear despite temperatures near negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit, were ruled hypothermia deaths. Two of the last four bodies found, Lyudmila Dubinina and Semyon Zolotaryov, were missing their eyeballs, Lyudmila was also missing her tongue, and both had clothing that tested positive for radioactivity. More than sixty years later, no single explanation, from avalanche to secret Soviet weapons testing, has been confirmed. The episode then moves to a cabin in California's Sierra Nevada foothills, where Leonard Lake and Charles Ng tortured and killed as many as 25 people between 1983 and 1985. Lake, a Vietnam veteran discharged for psychological reasons, built a cinderblock bunker behind a one-way mirror where he and Ng held women as sex slaves before killing them, dismembering the bodies, and dissolving the remains in acid; investigators eventually recovered twelve victims' remains along with roughly 40 pounds of charred bone. The pair was caught in June 1985 after Ng tried to shoplift a bench vise; Lake swallowed a cyanide capsule sewn into his jacket lining and died in custody before trial, while Ng was convicted of eleven murders in 1999 and remains on death row at San Quentin.Next comes Robert the Doll, manufactured by Germany's Steiff Company in 1904 and given to a Key West boy named Robert Eugene "Gene" Otto, who reportedly carried the doll everywhere and spoke of it in the first person. After Gene died in 1974, new owner Myrtle Reuter said the doll continued moving through her house with no explanation and eventually donated it to the Fort East Martello Museum, where curator Cori Convertito now oversees a steady stream of visitors who claim their cameras stop working in Robert's presence. From there, the episode circles back to 1912 Louisiana and the disappearance of four-year-old Bobby Dunbar from Swayze Lake. Eight months later, authorities found a boy matching his description traveling with a man named William Cantwell Walters, who insisted the child was Bruce Anderson, son of field hand Julia Anderson; the Dunbar family claimed the boy as their own anyway. It took until 2004, after years of research by Bobby's granddaughter Margaret Dunbar Cutwright, for a DNA test to prove the man raised as Bobby Dunbar shared no blood relation to the Dunbar family, meaning the real Bobby likely died in 1912 and the family had unknowingly raised Julia's son instead. The story turns next to Albert Fish, born in 1870 and later known as the Brooklyn Vampire, who spent decades torturing, killing, and cannibalizing children after enduring severe abuse in a New York orphanage as a boy. In 1928, posing as a farmer named Frank Howard, Fish lured ten-year-old Grace Budd away from her family and killed her; he wasn't identified until November 1934, when a letter he sent to Grace's mother describing the murder in graphic detail was traced back to him. Fish was executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison on January 16th, 1936.Following that, the episode covers the unresolved 1945 Sodder children case in Fayetteville, West Virginia, where a Christmas Eve house fire killed, or apparently killed, five of George and Jennie Sodder's nine children. No bones were ever recovered from the wreckage despite a coroner attributing the deaths to the blaze, and the family spent decades chasing tips and alleged sightings after strangers had made ominous threats about the house burning down in the months before the fire. George and Jennie erected a billboard along Route 16 asking for information and died in 1968 and 1989, respectively, without ever learning their children's fate. From there, the story turns to Anatoly Moskvin, a Russian journalist and college professor fluent in thirteen languages who dubbed himself a "necropolyst" and visited 752 cemeteries around his hometown of Nizhny Novgorod. Moskvin was arrested in 2011 after police investigating the desecration of Muslim graves found him painting over photographs of the dead; a search of the apartment he shared with his parents turned up the mummified remains of 29 women and girls, dressed, made up with buttons for eyes, and fitted with music boxes inside their chests. Moskvin told investigators he dug up the bodies because he was lonely and confessed to 44 counts of abusing graves and corpses. The episode clos

This week on Sexual Assault Survivor Stories, I continue my conversation with Hannah King in Part Two of a three-part series. Episode 200 picks up directly where Part One ended, allowing Hannah to continue telling her story in her own words and at her own pace. In Part One, Hannah began sharing her experience of being drugged and violently sexually assaulted while outside the United States. She also began describing the devastating impact the assault had on her life. In this second installment, I continue my conversation with Hannah as she shares more of an experience that is deeply personal, painful, and difficult to revisit. I'm presenting Hannah's story across three episodes so that it can be heard without being rushed or reduced to a brief account of what happened to her. If you haven't listened to Part One, I encourage you to begin there before continuing with this episode. Part Three and the conclusion of my conversation with Hannah will be released next week. Episode 200 is also an important milestone for the SASS Podcast. Reaching this point has only been possible because of the survivors who have trusted me with their stories and the listeners who continue to hear them, share them, and support the mission of this show. While the procedures for administering and processing rape kit tests has improved greatly in San Francisco over the past decade, cuts to the special victims unit and other factors have resulted in fewer investigations into alleged rapists, leaving victims waiting as their cases sit inactive. The summer begins...and with it, a journey into one of the most singular, poetic and uncompromising voices in horror cinema.Welcome to The Summer of Rollin, a brand-new multi-part retrospective celebrating the dreamlike, surreal and unmistakably gothic films of French auteur Jean Rollin, using the stunning 4K UHD restorations from Indicator as our guide through his extraordinary filmography. In this opening chapter we travel back to where it all began with The Rape of the Vampire (1968) and The Nude Vampire (1970)...two films that announced the arrival of a filmmaker unlike anyone else working in horror. Before there were sprawling cemeteries by the sea, melancholic vampire sisters wandering deserted beaches and haunting visions that blurred the lines between fantasy and reality, there was a young filmmaker with almost no money, enormous ambition and a determination to create horror that looked and felt like poetry. We'll explore the remarkable story behind The Rape of the Vampire, a production born almost by accident. Originally conceived as a short film before unexpectedly expanding into a feature, its troubled production forced Rollin to think on his feet, embrace experimentation and create something that felt unlike any vampire film audiences had seen before. Released during the political and cultural upheaval of May 1968, the film scandalised audiences, baffled critics and quietly introduced many of the visual obsessions that would define Rollin's entire career. Then, just two years later, we'll see how Rollin returned with The Nude Vampire, his first colour feature and a giant leap forward in confidence. Mixing masked cults, pulp serials, secret societies and his growing fascination with dream logic, the film reveals a filmmaker who had already refined his unique cinematic language while refusing to compromise his wonderfully eccentric vision.Along the way we'll discuss:The unlikely birth of Jean Rollin's story telling directing career. How an accidental feature film launched one of horror's most distinctive auteurs. The evolution of his vampire mythology between his first two features. Why conventional storytelling was never his priority. The visual motifs that would become signatures throughout his career. The beautiful new Indicator 4K UHD restorations and the wealth of historical context found within their superb special features.Whether you're a lifelong admirer of Jean Rollin or stepping into his haunting world for the very first time, this series aims to celebrate a filmmaker who followed his own strange path through cinema, creating films that are as hypnotic, romantic and mysterious today as they were over fifty years ago.So pour yourself a glass of red wine, light a candle, listen for the crashing waves and prepare to spend your summer wandering forgotten castles, lonely cemeteries and moonlit beaches...The Summer of Rollin has begun. The following texts and documentaries were used in this series:Lost Girls: The Phantasmagorical Cinema of Jean Rollin - Samm DeighanOrchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin (2022) - Kat Ellinger and Dima BallinIndicator 4KUHD Releases of both The Rape of the Vampire & The Nude Vampire - Street date June 2023.The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn't Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved ItThe Rape of the Vampire:Duncan: 4The Nude Vampire:Duncan: 4.5Our new RSS Feed: https://anchor.fm/s/13ba6ef0/podcast/rssCheck out the show on Anchor, iTunes, TuneIn & on Stitcher Radio. Please leave us feedback on iTunes, podcastunderthestairs@gmail.com and follow us on Facebook.TIMECODE FOR EPISODE 574:00:00:00 - Intro 00:06:25 - The Rape of the Vampire00:22:05 - The Nude Vampire00:32:57 - The Indicator 4KUHD's00:37:18 - Closing the Show

Trump just reinstated the naval blockade on Iran and declared the United States the guardian of the Strait of Hormuz — with a 20% charge on cargo for the protection service. You need to see what this changes before it starts showing up at the pump. The Strait of Hormuz carries one-fifth of the world's seaborne oil every day. Iranian threats and attacks on ships are driving up energy prices and hitting working families. After the June deal collapsed and Iran resumed harassing commercial traffic, Trump ordered strikes and brought back the blockade with this 20% cargo reimbursement policy. It's America saying we're done footing the bill alone while allies with navies do little — the ships using the strait should help cover the security costs. Pat also covered: Bronko Nagurski — the toughest football player of all time. Lindsey Graham's sister appointed to take his Senate seat. 78% of Americans know the first president … the other 22% will surprise you. Zohran Mamdani's surprising answer on why rape is increasing in NYC. Could Ron DeSantis end up on the Supreme Court? Do you think this 20% cargo fee is a fair way to share the burden of protecting the Strait of Hormuz? What's your honest take on whether bringing the blockade back makes America safer or just pulls us deeper into conflict with Iran? The democrat who just won 70 percent of Maine’s vote in the primary election, has now officially dropped out of the race. Graham Platner posted an 11 minute video to X last night, stating clearly that is wasn’t the “false” rape allegations that forced him out, but instead, it was because of the Democratic Party itself. Platner claims the political system and the party took away the funding and structure necessary for him to continue his campaign and made it clear he is innocent of the allegations questionably timed to end his candidacy. Now state democrats are racing against time to choose a new nominee to go head to head with Republican incumbent and long time Maine senator, Susan Collins. The Democratic Party is once again in upheaval as Graham Platner, its unconventional nominee to knock out longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine, faces a rape accusation that threatens to end his once-powerful campaign and endanger Democrats' chances of flipping a key seat in the November midterm elections.Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer whose anti-establishment campaign had already weathered a series of scandals, has denied the rape allegation from ex-girlfriend Jenny Racicot, which Politico first reported on Monday. His campaign said the allegation was “coached and coordinated by out of state establishment operatives,” though it was supported by messages Racicot sent in 2023, long before Platner had a political profile. Despite Platner's denials, a cascade of Democratic politicians, operatives, and organizations have called on him to drop out of the race by 5 p.m. next Monday, in time to be removed from the general election ballot. Platner has said he would only drop out if he's allowed to pick his successor to face Collins in November. If Platner withdraws, Maine Democrats would have to pick a new candidate by July 27.That's set off a scramble to find a replacement nominee and point fingers over the darkest chapter yet in a race that had already drawn national attention for a series of controversies — including accusations that Platner had twisted another woman's arm behind her back and trapped her in a room; a sexting scandal; a Nazi tattoo; and a series of Reddit posts in which he belittled sexual assault, asked why Black people don't tip, and disparaged white and rural voters. (Platner has denied that he mistreated women and apologized for the tattoo, text messages, and Reddit posts.)Where does the Democratic Party — and the insurgent movement that saw Platner as a powerful rebuke to the establishment — go now? We're bringing you an extra episode of The Intercept Briefing this week to cover Platner's downfall and where Maine voters might look next. In this episode, host Akela Lacy speaks with Adam Carlson, a Democratic strategist and founding partner of the polling firm Zenith Research who supported Platner through all the other scandals until Monday — and now says he was wrong.“We — as in, the people who were looking for something different — looked at past nominees against Collins and wanted to try something different,” Carlson told The Intercept Briefing. “An outsider, someone who could appeal to white working-class voters, appeal to disaffected Trump voters, independents, Republicans, maybe someone who didn't fall neatly along partisan lines, progressive economic populist, but also pro-Second Amendment. A bit more heterodox.” When Platner launched his campaign, “it's, like, here comes this guy who epitomizes what we are lacking.”The story has reanimated the age-old feud between Democrats loyal to the party establishment and a surging cohort of progressive and leftist candidates bucking the party line. But while competing factions rush to use Platner's downfall as evidence of their own political prowess, Carlson says, they're learning the wrong lessons.“Yes, you should have better vetting. Yes, having people who are in public office who have faced some level of media scrutiny are less likely to have these kinds of things appear. Not foolproof — look at Eric Swalwell,” Carlson said. “But I think you can overlearn the lessons from this and try and turn this into a factional win. And I think that all this is subtext for the conversation that we're about to have in 2028.”Full transcript: https://interc.pt/4vUSFVg Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
