    Marrit Steenbergen had a heck of a 2025 season. At the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, she touched first in the 100 free, defending her world title from 2024. Then, to end the year, she won 6 gold medals in Lublin at the SC European Championships, where she also set 5 European records. Steenbergen joins us to discuss her big year and her new training style that has brought her success so far. While she's in the water 8-9x per week during much of the season, she's started the last two seasons by only swimming 3 days per week (5x within those three days) and focusing on building strength outside the pool.

    There's a lot of data showing that trust in governments, institutions, and organizations is declining worldwide. Employers were once considered the last trusted institution—and even that is eroding. As someone who has spent years working independently, I've often noticed that these conversations leave out people like us entirely. When you don't have an employer, trust shows up differently. Stability looks different. And the relationship you have with yourself matters more than most people realize. So I wanted to start there. I talk about what it actually means to trust yourself when you're self-employed, when you don't see many role models living or working the way you do, and when the noise—from well-meaning friends, family, and society—keeps asking, "Why don't you just get a job?" For me, self-trust isn't abstract. It's practical. It shows up in how I decide to work, how I communicate, and how I choose between remote, in-person, or hybrid ways of connecting. It shows up in my values—impact, meaning, and helping shape a future of work that supports people, families, and communities, not just productivity metrics. I also share the inner practices that help me stay grounded when things feel uncertain. Meditation. Walking. Swimming. Paying attention to my body. Noticing what has always been true about me—what I'm drawn to, what calms me, what fuels my curiosity. I talk about rituals, habits, and even "extreme noticing": light on water, changes in seasons, how my body reacts to people, places, and decisions. These practices help me recognize what's changing, what isn't, and where opportunity actually lives—for me. As we move through uncertainty, I believe self-trust becomes a form of leadership. When you know your own reactions, values, and rhythms, you're better equipped to make decisions, form opinions, and move forward without needing constant external validation.     In this episode we look at Luke 11:14-28. Within this passage, Jesus addresses the idea of a house divided, the returning of unclean spirits, and true blessedness. From this passage, we discussed how Jesus was cementing His identity in the minds of His disciples and those listening; as God, He has all power and all authority. He is the “stronger man” and through Him, the Kingdom of God as it hand. This conversation is so important because just as Jesus identifies the two choices for those listening, we also have two choices as a result of knowing who He is; we are either for Him, or against Him. There is no middle or neutral ground. In God's Kingdom, we are invited into an active participation and if we are not actively pursuing Him, then we are getting further and further from Him. The invitation is His, and the choice is ours.

    “Genuinely Christian schools will not always fit what everyone else is doing in education. We need to give ourselves permission to go against the flow.” But it's not sufficient to seek difficulty and resistance. We need a goal. A mission. A burning love. A beautiful vision. As Steven emphasizes in today's episode, “Nonconformity is not enough. We need something to be conformed to. And for us, that something is a Someone.”   Educational orthodoxy. What is it and how does it impact us? You'll hear about this in today's episode, but basically, it's the body of assumptions and principles that unify the majority of educational efforts around us. This orthodoxy shapes the way we describe a well-trained person and the educational experiences we dream of offering. Steven Brubaker, speaking from a long history in teaching and school leadership submits that the educational orthodoxy in north America is inadequate as a source of guidance for our schools and maybe even dangerously misguided. But we will need a solid basis for doing something different, for swimming against the current. “Every nonconformity is a conformity to something,” Steven reminds us. Every resistance is a defense of something. What's worth defending? Worth conforming to? Drawing penetrating insights from the analogy of salmon, Steven lays out a challenge for Christian schools to identify and relentlessly pursue a worthy homing instinct.   What is a compelling and worthy final end for Christian education? The end beyond which we stop looking for some further fulfillment? Schools conformed to Jesus.     Marc Hansen, a former Navy SEAL, in Episode 229 of the Transition Drill Podcast. This time, explore identity after service for veterans and first responders, navigating the shift from team structure to self-directed responsibility. You'll hear Marc Hansen on choosing a renewed mission through music after the SEAL Teams, and what it takes to own your transition without drifting.Marc Hansen served six years in the Navy and has been out about ten years. He's direct about what changed him most: once you're out, it's on you, and that responsibility hits different than anything inside the military system. A turning point shows up early. Midway through his first deployment, Marc was already thinking about getting out. When he returned, he learned his younger brother was injured in training and didn't make it through the pipeline. Marc made a decision in that moment: when his time was up, he was getting out and they were going to rock and roll together. That choice connects to the way he defines “success” in music: writing songs, playing them live, and hearing a crowd sing them back. The conversation also gets into the family context. Marc describes a home where service was normal, with a mix of Navy and first responder work across siblings, and a longer thread of Navy service in earlier generations. He's from Staten Island, talks about growing up in a tight neighborhood, and how that environment shaped him before the military. Before the Teams, he aimed at art school, attended FIT in Manhattan, then shifted toward work, travel, and eventually committing to BUD/S. He doesn't romanticize it. Swimming didn't come easy, he struggled, and then found a partner dynamic that helped him perform beyond what he expected.
