The former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has added his voice to calls for an apology for what he has called the state's role in the "terrible tragedy" of historic forced adoptions. Between 1949 and 1976, thousands of pregnant women and girls in the UK were sent away to "prison-like" homes run by the church and state and had their babies put up for adoption. In 2021, an inquiry concluded that the State bore ultimate responsibility for the suffering inflicted on vulnerable women and their children, calling on the government to issue an official apology. Anna Foster is joined by Diana Defries, chair of the Movement for Adoption Apology and Karen Constantine, author of Taken, experiences of forced adoption, to give their reaction to the intervention by the former PM and whether they will be granted an apology. Belinda Carlisle started her musical career as Dottie Danger, a drummer in a punk band. She gained fame as the lead vocalist of the Go-Go's and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She went on to have a prolific career as a solo artist with hits including Heaven Is a Place on Earth and Circle in the Sand. She joins Anna to discuss her new album, Once Upon a Time in California, which takes a deeply personal journey through the golden sounds of her youth. What happens when a woman earns more than her partner, or is the sole earner in a household? For some couples, it's a practical arrangement that works well. For others, it can bring unexpected tensions, challenging traditional ideas about gender, identity and power. Listener Karla emailed the programme to say that she wanted to talk about what it means to be a female breadwinner. She joined Anita in a replay of the item from Listener Week, along with Melissa Hogenboom, author of the book Breadwinners. After learning about the threat to harvest mice in the UK, 13 year old friends Eva and Emily decided to breed 250 of them at home and release them into a local nature reserve - with the help of a crowdfunder and Chris Packham. We think of the coal mining industry as dark, dirty and macho, but was there a place for women or even, beauty queens? Jennifer Jasmine White recently curated an exhibition at the National Coal Mining Museum that looks at the women at the heart of coal mining industry and their creative contributions to those communities.Presenter: Anna Foster Producer: Emma Pearce

In the 1980s, before Internet marketing had even really begun, our very special guest today and returning champion was working as a tech writer in the foreign exchange trading department of Bankers Trust in New York. In his new book “How The Web Won,The Inside Story of How a Motley Crew of Outsiders Hijacked the Information Superhighway and Struck a Blow for Human Freedom,” Ken McCarthy writes: “Working with foreign exchange traders taught me an important lesson about the need for speed in business: Windows of opportunity open and close fast. That understanding, combined with my ‘discovery' of the rudiments of direct marketing, has been worth millions to me and a whole lot more to my clients.” That's one of the many powerful lessons from Ken's new book, “How The Web Won.” He's been around Internet marketing longer than anyone else I know–and possibly longer than anyone, period. In 1994, he sponsored the first conference about the business potential of the World Wide Web. With keynote speaker Marc Andreeson, at the time, the 23-year old co-founder of Netscape, an early Internet browser and the first important one. Time magazine pointed out that Ken was the first person to identify the importance and business power of the click-through rate, which today, of course, is the basis of the roughly half-a-trillion-dollars a year Facebook and Google make selling pay per click advertising. In 2002, Ken started an event called The System Seminar, which I attended a few years later myself. Met Frank Kern, Gary Halbert, Harlan Kilstein, and a whole bunch of other people who were, or became, legends in direct marketing. We could spend the rest of the show talking about all of Ken's accomplishments, but I'd rather he tell you about his book, “How The Web Won.” So Ken, welcome, and congrats on your new book! 1. So in 1993, you attended a conference called One BBS CON. I'm not sure from your book if that was the moment that changed your life, since you'd been doing some pretty good pulling rabbits out of hats with direct marketing before then. But could you talk about if that was an inflection point and how what you learned at that conference influenced you going forward? 2. Could you talk about being invited to Dan Kennedy's conference in 1993? I can't imagine a lot of the hard core direct marketers who paid $5000 to be there were all that receptive at that time to what you had to say. Were they? 3. Until 1989, it was forbidden by the U.S. government to use the Internet for commercial purposes. How fast did that change in the 90s, and what were the key moments for that? How did your San Francisco conference fit into all of that? 4. When did Internet marketing as we know it today really start to get traction? 5. What would you say was the big mistake made by many of the companies that went bankrupt in the dot-bomb of 2000 – and how long did it take for the direct marketing way of thinking take to catch on? 6. What prompted you to launchThe System seminar in 2002? 7. Any other key moments between the early days and today, that you'd like to talk about? Parenting a child who melts down no matter how hard you try can feel draining and lonely. You've done the time-outs, taken away privileges, tried the sticker charts—and yet the child's behavior keeps coming back.Instead of helping, those strategies sometimes make things worse, leaving you wondering if you're doing something wrong. You're not alone, and it's not bad parenting—it's a dysregulated brain. In this episode, I'm breaking down why traditional discipline backfires on sensitive or neurodivergent kids, and what actually works instead. I'll give you practical strategies to calm the nervous system first, show you why connection always beats punishment, and teach you how to build the problem solving skills your child truly needs. Why doesn't time-out work for my neurodivergent child? If you've ever sent your child to time-out only to have the meltdown get worse, you're not imagining it. For many neurodivergent kids, time outs don't feel like teaching—they feel like rejection. And instead of calming down, their nervous system ramps up even more.Research shows that parents use time-outs inconsistently, and the reality is, they're often applied when a child is already at peak emotional dysregulation. In that state, the brain can't process or learn. Many neurodivergent kids experience shame, anxiety, or even sensory overload instead of gaining self-control.Here's what's really happening:Time-outs miss the teachable moment because kids are too dysregulated to reflect.Sensitive children feel wrong or rejected, which can trigger bigger power struggles.Connection is the game changer, because safety is what allows real emotional regulation. So if time-outs keep backfiring in your family, it isn't about bad parenting. It's not bad parenting—it's a dysregulated brain. How can I stay calm when my child is melting down?I know how exhausting it feels when your child is screaming, crying, or refusing to listen. In those moments, your own nervous system wants to react—but here's the truth: your calm is your child's calm. This is why I call parents the emotional anchor. When you regulate yourself first, you model the very skill your child is struggling to build. You don't need to get it right 100% of the time—aiming for 80% is more than enough. Perfection isn't required for growth, and reminding yourself of that can reduce the pressure and pain you carry as a mom or dad.A few ways to anchor yourself:Pause before reacting. Even 30 seconds of breathing can calm your nervous system.Check your body language. Slow down, soften your tone, and relax your shoulders.Co-regulate first. Teaching happens later—after your child feels safe and understood.

Johnny Glover (Pastor of Worship), "Saving Faith", Children's Time, Choir, Blended Worship Praise Team (8:45 Service).          13.  On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.  14.  One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.  15.  When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.          25.  About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.  26.  Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.  27.  The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.  28.  But Paul shouted, “Don't harm yourself! We are all here!”          29.  The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.  30.  He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”          31.  They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”  32.  Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.  33.  At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.  34.  The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.          35.  When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.”  36.  The jailer told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”          37.  But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”          38.  The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.  39.  They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.    40.  After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left.          (Acts 16:13-15; 25-40 NIV)

Awe... that electric moment when reality suddenly expands beyond what you thought possible. Scientists tell us that experiencing awe literally rewires the brain. In those precious moments when we encounter something vast, something that makes us feel both infinitely small and profoundly connected, our neural pathways light up like constellations being born. Time slows. The chattering mind quiets. And suddenly... you're here. Fully here. Most people go weeks, months, even years between true moments of awe. Starving for that expansion, that breathless recognition of life's magnificence. But what they don't realize is that awe isn't just found... it can be activated. Like a dormant frequency within you, waiting to resonate. Awe arrives like lightning splitting the sky of consciousness open. It's that sudden gasp when infinity touches your skin and every cell in your body remembers it's made of stardust. Feel it... that sensation spreading through you now, like golden honey flowing through your veins, warm and electric and alive. This is the feeling of standing at the edge of everything and nothing simultaneously. Where your heartbeat synchronizes with the pulse of galaxies spinning in the vast cathedral of space. Where a single breath contains eternities, and you realize... you are both the observer and the universe observing itself. Awe is liquid light pouring through the cracks in ordinary perception. It's the moment your boundaries dissolve like sugar in warm rain, and suddenly you're not just in the world... you ARE the world breathing itself into existence. Every atom singing. Every particle dancing in the infinite ballroom of being. After listening to this episode just once, you might notice how the space around you already feels different. How your breathing has naturally deepened. Because awe doesn't require mountains or oceans or galaxies... sometimes it begins with a single moment of recognition. This moment. Where everything is about to change.

“In this part of the essay, Emerson is talking about walking a lot, you know, sort of walking through nature, taking a stroll,” says James Marcus in this week's episode of The World in Time. “He has this rather sublime experience, and he describes it in this way: ‘Standing on the bare ground, my head bathed by the blithe air and uplifted into infinite space, all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball. I am nothing. I see all. The currents of the universal being circulate through me. I am a part or particle of God.' Now, I mean, that is lofty stuff, and it can edge over into silliness. In a way, if you picture it, it starts to be silly and that is why Christopher Cranch's cartoon is hilarious, because a literalization of it is kind of ridiculous, in a way. Part of the thing I love about Emerson is that he wasn't afraid to seem silly in his eagerness to render the experience. What he's talking about—if you get away from the actual image of an eyeball with a top hat on—is a kind of ecstatic merger with the universe, where the walls drop, the boundaries drop, the currents of the universe move through you. If you look at it that way, he's talking about a classic ecstatic experience.” This week on the podcast, Donovan Hohn speaks with writer and biographer James Marcus about his book Glad to the Brink of Fear: A Portrait of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson's sense of self was, Marcus says, “kaleidoscopic,” and so is this episode, presenting not one Emerson but many: Emerson the public intellectual who cherished the privacy of his study, Emerson the lapsed minister who left the church but continued to preach on the lyceum circuit, Emerson the initially reluctant but eventually ardent abolitionist, Emerson the Swedenborgian mystic, Emerson the loner who deeply loved his friends Margaret Fuller and Henry Thoreau, Emerson the son estranged from his father, Emerson the father undone by grief for his dead son, and, finally, Emerson the volunteer firefighter. Marcus and Hohn also go searching for Emersonian influences in “The Mast-Head” chapter of Moby Dick. But they spend most of the conversation with the essayist from Concord, that artisan of indelible sentences, whom Melville once compared to a great philosophical whale who could dive “five miles or more,” sounding the depths.
