James Elden's Playwright's Spotlight
From Lawyer to Playwright, Finding the Engine, and Working Backwards to Move Forward - Playwright's Spotlight with June Carryl

Send us a textA MUST LISTEN! This in far from a dismissal of past guests and interviews. This is a personal and human conversation that is insightful and inspiring from struggle to achievement and perhaps a pathway to the later. June and I had a mishap in schedule that, had it not happened, I don't think we would have had the conversation that we came away with. Her background of going from lawyer to playwright is enough to inspire anyone question their passion into the arts to take the leap. We follow with the lessons of writing a disaster of a play and getting the craft wrong but, yet, finding the engine. We examine her process, need vs premise, skeletal biographies, working backwards to move forwards in terms of character backgrounds, the gentle form of interrogation by starting with love, exploring unknown markets, inspiring playwrights and (un)appreciating the classics, reading vs viewing  a play, and compromise, sacrifice, and tradeoffs. It's a very philosophical episode that playwrights of all levels will walk away with something huge. Enjoy!June Carryl is a playwright, actor and director. Her plays include LA BÊTE - A One Act which won the Encore! Producers Award, Spirit of the Fringe Award, and  Orgasmico Most Orgasmic Writing Award in 2014, STONE ANGELS, BLOWFLY; MOURNING STORY, BABY TOES, SEDUCER, THE RINGS OF SATURN (The Living Room Series, Blank Theatre), GOD'S WIFE, and THE ART OF YES. Performed by the Quarantine Players Directed by Leslie Ross Produced by A. J. Campbell, Quarantine Players HAPPY THANKSGIVING is a full-length play set on Thanksgiving Day, 2016, two weeks after the highly divisive U.S. presidential election. A Michigan-state (Blue state turned Red!) married couple, two conservative Republican parents, are holding their annual Thanksgiving dinner for their three adult children coming back to Jackson, Michigan (often branded as the birthplace of the Republican party): their first-born, a liberal firebrand Hillary-supporting daughter, along with their middle child, a gay Republican son, and the baby of the family, a Sandernista democratic socialist daughter. Annual Thanksgiving family gatherings are normally fraught with enough anxiety for this diverse and politically-conscious family, but after the long and contentious presidential campaign of 2016, this post-election turkey get-together threatens to be a disaster in the making. One American family and their binds of marriage, parenthood, brother and sisterhood will all be tested as the family members are challenged to answer the ultimate question, which comes first, party, candidate, country or family? ARTHUR HOLDEN - (D. Scott Graham) Early 60's. Family patriarch. Old school traditionalist. Still, open-minded. Steely. With a soft side. BEV HOLDEN -(Lori Balash Muhlstein) Early 60's. The real family boss. Simple but wise.Path-of-least resistance peacemaker personality. Hidden rebel. DEBORAH HOLDEN GONZALEZ (Caty Nicholson) Early to mid 30's. Daughter. Liberal firebrand, passionate to the point of neuroses. Glass half-empty. ROBERT HOLDEN - (Matthew Marcus) Mid 30's. Son. Conservative. Republican. Gay. Later 20's. Baby of the family. Bernie Sanders acolyte. Socially engaged. Still, a realist. HECTOR GONZALEZ - (Ricardo Padillo.) Mid-30's. Latino. Husband to Deborah. Progressive liberal. Less fiery than his wife. Glass half-full. MALIK HENDERSON - (Chaz Pando) Later 20's-Early 30's. Black. Husband to Sarah. Very well-read. An anarchist at heart.

(RIGHT CLICK IMAGE TO SAVE EPISODE TO YOUR COMPUTER)   In this Case File, John and Paul sit down and talk with actor Tom Schanley.  To bionic fans, he played Michael Austin in The Return of The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman, but there is so much more as John and Paul discover in this interview.  We talk about his desire to be an actor and his family support, his first roles, and his Six Million Degrees of Star Trek Separation besides his obvious appearance on Enterprise.   Comment on the episode here or write abionicpodcast@gmail.com It all started 30 miles north of Boston, in the quaint New England coastal town of Manchester, Mass. At a young age, despite a loving family, proper upbringing and a good education, Tom Schanley decided to become an actor ---- Three defibrillator charges later, his parents threw their support behind him and the journey began.   That journey took him to school in New Hampshire, San Diego, England and finally the acting program at USC, where during his junior year, he landed his first professional role as Whit Champion, on the NBC drama series "The Yellow Rose."   After college, Tom continued studying acting with some of the best in the business: Vince Chase, Stella Adler, Winn Handman, and Roy London, to name but a few.   His body of work grew as well, including the television movie "The Alamo - Thirteen Days To Glory" with Alec Baldwin, the starring role in "The Return of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman," and stints on shows with shorter titles like "Fame," "Dynasty," "Melrose Place," and "Lonesome Dove." (He sang "country" on Fame, ladies).   Feature films were also on the menu. Among them, "Fever Pitch," directed by the legendary Richard Brooks, "Red Rock West" (there's a story behind that one), "Courage Under Fire," directed by Ed Zwick, starring Denzel Washington and "Conspiracy Theory," starring Mel Gibson, among others.   Tom continued to exercise his theater chops as well, with notable roles in the award winning "Getting Out," at the Cast Theatre, "The Wager," at the Colony Theatre and as Mark Antony in the critically acclaimed LA Shakespeare Festival production of "Julius Caesar." Tom also spent eight years with the comedy improve troop WITHOUT A NET.   Then came the new millennium, and with it Tom's "multi-hyphenate" status. Alongside friend and actor Jon Lindstrom, Tom wrote and Executive-Produced the feature film "The Hard Easy," starring David Boreanaz, Vera Farmiga, Henry Thomas, Bruce Dern and Peter Weller. Their second script, "Head High" is currently the subject of a bidding war at two major studios - OK - "should" be the subject of a bidding war, or so they think. Tom has a number of solo projects in the pipeline as well. Among them, the un-romantic feature film comedy "Dating Tammy," and the TV pilot "Tee Time." "Saying" the lines however, is still Tom's first love and priority, and the past couple of years have offered plenty of that: "Dexter", "Criminal Minds", "Without a Trace", " The CSI'S", "The Forgotten"..... (and a really cool puppet show in Venice Beach).   Tom happily resides beach-side, Santa Monica, CA. Stay tuned.       Links Homepage   Facebook page   Twitter   IMDB page
