Horror legends and icons collide in this week's history lesson: Alien (1979) opens in U.S. theaters, turning deep space into a haunted house, while Drag Me to Hell, Stranger Things 4, Wrong Turn, and Ma reshape what cursed horror looks like on screen. Explore the practical effects, sound design, and supernatural storytelling that made May 25–31 a landmark week for modern horror cinema—and what these films teach us about crafting atmospheric dread.Inside this episode:• Alien opens in U.S. theaters — May 25, 1979Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror masterpiece turns deep space into a haunted house, giving us the Nostromo, the xenomorph, the chestburster, the facehugger, and one of horror's greatest final girls in Ellen Ripley. With its grimy industrial design, corporate paranoia, and unforgettable creature work, Alien remains one of the most influential horror films ever made.Where to watch: Streaming on HBO Max and HBO Max Amazon Channel; rent/buy on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.• Stranger Things 4, Volume 1 premieres on Netflix — May 27, 2022Hawkins gets darker, scarier, and more traumatic as Vecna drags the Netflix hit fully into supernatural horror. Haunted memories, cursed visions, floating bodies, and the pop-culture resurrection of Kate Bush helped make Stranger Things 4a massive streaming horror event.Where to watch: Streaming on Netflix.• Drag Me to Hell opens in the U.S. — May 29, 2009Sam Raimi returns to horror with a wickedly funny, gross, and vicious curse story starring Alison Lohman as a loan officer who makes one cruel choice and pays for it in demonic consequences. Drag Me to Hell proves PG-13 horror can still be wild, disgusting, scary, and unforgettable.Where to watch: Free with ads on YouTube; rent/buy on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.• Wrong Turn opens in the U.S. — May 30, 2003A bad detour, a car accident, and a nightmare waiting in the woods helped turn Wrong Turn into a durable 2000s survival horror staple. This backwoods cannibal thriller taps into the primal fear of being lost, hunted, and far beyond help.Where to watch: Streaming on Prime Video and Prime Video with Ads; rent/buy on Amazon Video and Apple TV.• Deep-Cut Spotlight: Ma opens in U.S. theaters — May 31, 2019Blumhouse turns a basement hangout into a trap with a smile as Octavia Spencer gives Ma its creepy, uncomfortable power. What starts as teenage partying curdles into obsession, captivity, and social horror, making Sue Ann one of Blumhouse's strangest modern villains.Where to watch: Rent/buy on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.Plus, we celebrate horror birthdays for Peter Cushing, Helena Bonham Carter, Vincent Price, and Christopher Lee, then look at how this week's horror anniversaries all circle the same chilling idea: sometimes the scariest place is the trap you willingly walk into.

Released in 2009, the film was written by Raimi alongside his brother Ivan Raimi and stars Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver, Dileep Rao, David Paymer, and Adriana Barraza. Big Fish follows the many craftfully told stories of Edward Bloom and how they affected the lives of those who knew him. The October MOTM is a horror film, in recognition of Halloween and this year we have a truly frightening film, but still with a lot of humor. It comes from director Sam Rami, so that mixture will be no surprise to the deadites out there, but this film does not feature Bruce Campbell. Instead, we get Alison Lohman, being physically and mentally abused as a curse threatens to take her to hell via a violent lamia. Matthew Simpson of the Awesome Friday Podcast was the movie's champion, and he takes over the hosting duties. Damien Riley of "But I Digress" spends a lot of time admiring Miss Lohman in the film, and we talk about out favorite horror film directors as well. Plenty of spoilers, but with a film titled "Drag Me to Hell" you have a pretty good idea of what is coming.

MOVIE DISCUSSION:  Melanie joins Melvin to talk Sam Raimi's 2009 return-to-horror feature Drag Me to Hell, a film so silly it disorients most viewers, including Melanie! From slapstick violence to cartoon gore, this movie surprised its PG-13 audience from start to finish! Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 18-minutes discussing AMC Theater's new tiered-seating price points, from value-pricing at the front to premium-pricing at the center (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Melanie has specifically told Melvin that Drag Me to Hell was a movie she hated. Has that changed? Melvin gives some background to the Sam Raimi style, something that no doubt shocks and stuns the unprepared. The hyperbole of Drag Me to Hell helps exemplify the subtle yet damning ways in which people can disregard one another, or put oneself before others, and all of this is made exceedingly evident in the complicating incident. Melanie, "It was so funny and I think I was just able to appreciate the more comedic elements of the film. There were still a few jump scares here or there, but you get startled and then you laugh." Sometimes, people are ashamed of things they don't necessarily have to be ashamed about, while also not being ashamed about things they ought to. Drag Me to Hell displays both of these from opening to closing credits. Christine thinks that demanding the old woman to forgive her will somehow fix the curse, but demanding someone to forgive you for your sin isn't repentance, because repentance is a full-on submission to wrong-doing, which categorically removes the ability for demands. With this in mind, Christine shows she hasn't learned anything. What makes an ending satisfying, and must the hero always succeed?Horror movies are interesting because whereas other movies will have some alien or virus or an idea as the villain, horror movies pick obvious things like murderers, demons, or the literal devil. As Christians - and it may sound weird for others to hear - but having hell or the devil as a literary consequence or threat is often more realistic to our daily life, and thus makes horror movies sometimes more intriguing.Recommendations:Cry_Wolf (2005) (Movie)Wind River (2017) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! When Christine Brown, a young bank loan officer, must decide whether to grant a third extension on the loan of one Sylvia Ganush, who's already defaulted on two – she's in a real quandary. She really wants that Assistant Manager position, and Stu Rubin seems to have the inside track with her boss, Mr. Jacks. But Christine's determined, and so, with all the heartlessness she can muster, she denies Mrs. Ganush the extension. It's a decision that will come to haunt her – for Mrs. Ganush curses Christine with the Lamia, an ancient goat spirit that makes Christine's life a living hell. The only solution: the sacrifice of an animal, and giving away the cursed object. Will a kindly medium, Rham Jas, be able to help Christine? Will the woman who met the Lamia years before, Shaun Sen Dena, be able to lend her expertise? Will Christine's psychology professor boyfriend Clay ever figure out what's going on? What will stop the spirit's relentless assault, and put a button on Christine's nightmare? Drag Me To Hell brings Sam Raimi back to what he does best. Over the top, tongue in cheek horror. If you haven't seen this one, you should. (1:20) - Intro(4:24) - Trailer(7:01) - Synopsis(8:22) - Review(12:15) - Score(20:59) - Spoilers(1:06:35) - Horror Movie Whooores Synopsis Drag Me To Hell, Directed by Sami Raimi, and starring Alison Lohman and the Mac guy, follows Christine Brown as she suffers the consequences of a Gypsy curse. She is cursed because she denies an old creepy woman a bank loan. Through the curse, she is tormented by an evil demon for three days and is told if the curse does not break, she will be dragged to hell to live all eternity with Hitler and unbaptised dead babies. The moral to the story is give creepy old ladies what they want. https://youtu.be/PPOaxHqoYxo Review of Drag Me To Hell This movie is PG-13 and you will be so distracted by your disgust to even notice that no one says fuck. I think this is the best pg-13 horror movie ever made. Sam Raimi's kinetic and unhinged directing style throttles you through the plot with very little fluff. This film really hits the sweet spot for me. The characters are fleshed out, The special effects are viscerally over the top, and there is a subtle ribbon of humor strung throughout.  Overall it's a very fun film to watch. The dramatic irony, the well timed callbacks, and undercurrent of campy energy kept me engaged throughout.  This film is one of those that you can come back to year after year and appreciate something new. It's perfectly cast, and the performances are all fantastic. This film served to launch Anthony Hopkins into A-list Hollywood status, and his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter stands as one of the best onscreen villains of all time. Jodie Foster's excellent portrayal of Clarice communicates her determination, intelligence, and weakness as a character. Levine's Buffalo Bill has very little screen time, but is a truly menacing character that establishes the stakes of the film. Lohman plays Christine Brown, an ambitious loan officer who, in the pursuit of a promotion,  chooses to evict an elderly woman from her home. The woman, played by Raver, curses Christine, giving her three days until a malicious spirit, the Lamia, drags her to hell.  Tagline — “Christine Brown has a good job, a great boyfriend, and a bright future.
