Replacing the existing Rear Wheel Drive variant, the Tesla Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive is built to offer maximum range at an accessible price. The single motor, combined with an energy-dense battery pack, standard heat-pump and low resistance tyres maximise efficiency and sets a new benchmark for cost per mile for electric SUVs. With a standard electricity tariff 50c per kWh an owner charging at home driving 10,000 km per year would spend €800 on charging, compared to €1,400 on an equivalent petrol vehicle and even more savings with an overnight EV tariff*. With the new 600 km WLTPrange for Model Y, a single charge will sustain more than a week of commutes. Making the World's Best-Selling Car Even More Accessible The introduction of this new variant is the result of our relentless efforts to bring costs down through economies of scale and innovative engineering. It also supports Tesla's mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy and is designed to uphold strong residual values for the long-term buyer and support affordable monthly costs for hire purchases and PCP finance options. Giving Customers More Options to Choose From Made in Tesla's Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory, the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive includes everything that propelled Model Y as the world's best-selling car in 2023. It comes with the highest level of premium materials, convenience, safety, and connected features included as standard. Drivers can remotely pre-heat or cool their vehicle via the Tesla app, enjoy the comfort of a premium cabin plus studio quality audio system paired with streaming apps. McLaren has just introduced the McLaren GTS, a replacement for the GT, and we have the details. The grand tourer marries supercar performance with everyday practicality. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine boasts 626 horsepower, 14 more than its predecessor, and it's lighter at 3,351 pounds. The result is what McLaren claims is a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 412 horsepower per ton. Clocking 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and 0-124 mph in 8.9 seconds, it outpaces the well-regarded GT. Its structure, rooted in McLaren's carbon fiber monocoque chassis, enhances agility and stability. Crafted with recycled carbon fiber components, the GTS boasts a lower center of gravity and intelligent adaptive suspension. The exterior flaunts a more aggressive design, enriched by gloss black finishes and personalization choices like 'Lava Grey' paint and 'Turbine' forged alloy wheels exclusive to the GTS. Inside, upgrades feature softgrain Aniline leather seats. The McLaren GTS is now open for orders, with McLaren promising deliveries in 2024. At the same time, Lexus has introduced a far more approachable car. The 2024 RZ lineup is now headlined by the newly announced RZ 300e, offering a 266-mile range and starting at $56,300. The front-wheel-drive model employs a 72.8kWh battery to feed a drivetrain that generates 201 horsepower. Lexus says it will deliver an EPA-estimated MPGe of 137/112/125 (city/highway/combined). The new RZ model features a rear subframe replacing the electric drive axle of the RZ 450e. The all-wheel-drive RZ 450e utilizes the Lexus DIRECT4 system, balancing torque between its 150-kW front and 80-kW rear eAxle motors. Total system horsepower is 308, and the trim offers a 220-mile range. Also in the news this week, a new study shows that Tesla drivers are the most accident-prone. And the drivers of other brands come in for some criticism as well. You'll be surprised to learn which brand's drivers get the most DUIs, for example. We'll have details. In the road tests this week, Host Jack Nerad and guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo will discuss the 2024 Honda Accord and the 2024 Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV. The Accord is a 2024 North American Car of the Year Finalists, and Nerad and DeLorenzo, two NACTOY jurors, discuss its merits in comparison to the other contenders — the Toyota Prius and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. Nerad and his family took a pre-holiday road trip in the Sequoia, which has been totally remade after the previous generation ran for more than a decade. How does it fare in comparison to the domestic stalwarts in the class, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition? We'll tell you in the road test segment. Also, in this episode, Nerad and DeLorenzo will discuss the most important news stories of 2023 and take a preview look at what might happen in the North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year awards, which will be presented in early January. All that and so much more are coming up in this episode of America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

While the Lexus NX has underwhelmed many in previous incarnations, the 2023 NX 450h F Sport gets the recipe right. It is luxurious and fun to drive at the same time, as Host Jack Nerad found during his week-long road test of the small luxury crossover. With 302 horsepower on tap from its plug-in hybrid powertrain, the NX takes on a performance-oriented demeanor that other trims in the line only hint at. On top of the extra juice, the plug-in version provides buyers with 37 miles of all-electric range. The icing on the cake is stellar fuel economy. The 450h is EPA-rated at 84 MPGe. Inside, the NX delivers a Lexus level of luxury. And the new Lexus multimedia systems do not disappoint. They are easy to use and full-featured in ways that the previous Lexus systems were not. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague takes a long look at the all-new 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid. After being reluctant about hybrids for years, Honda has recently done an about-face on the technology. For the 2023 model year, the top-level Accords all boast hybrid powertrains. The top-of-the-line Accords also feature a new and mightily improved infotainment setup, as Tague describes this week. In the news, a major global automaker says it might be forced to limit shipments of some of its vehicles to states that have adopted the California fuel economy and air quality standards. If you are a Left Coast musclecar fan this might be extremely bad news. We'll tell you which automaker it is and what the issues are in this episode. Tesla still has some safety investigations to deal with, but it is out of the woods in at least one of them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced it is closing a probe of a controversial former Tesla feature that allowed occupants to play games on its infotainment screen while the vehicle was in motion. And in the true crime files automotive edition, A Turkish court has made rulings in cases involving former Nissan chief and now fugitive Carlos Ghosn. Our guest for you this week is Brent Gruber, Executive Director of the Electric Vehicle Practice at J.D. Power. He is extremely knowledgeable about what's going on with EVs and, in particular, consumer attitudes about them. He will share them with us this week America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The all-new 2023 Kia Niro EV we just tested is the value-priced portion the brand's global effort to become a big-time competitor to Tesla Motors and the world other important electric-vehicle makers. The Kia EV6 is Kia's flagship battery-electric offering, but the Niro EV deserves headlines as the “affordable” entrant in the market. Within a few years, Kia hopes that the majority of its sales will come from battery-electric vehicles. The all-new 2023 Niro EV we tested is the second-generation Niro battery electric, part of a trio of brand-new Niros that also includes a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Kia product planner Mark Savino told Host Jack Nerad Kia expects the Niro EV will grab about a quarter of the model's total sales when production is normalized. Expected to be priced at less than $40,000, the Niro EV will be available in Kia dealers in all 50 states. With its single 201-horsepower permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, the Niro offers 188 lb-ft of torque and a 113 MPGe fuel-economy equivalent. According to Kia, range of a full charge for the 2023 Niro EV is 253 miles. When connected to a DC fast charger, the Niro EV can take on an 80 percent charge in less than 45 minutes, excellent charging performance. For those interested in more conventional performance, Co-Host Chris Teague tests the all-new 2023 Acura Integra this week. The name itself is a headline. In years past the Acura Integra was one of the brand's most popular and evocative models. But it was discontinued as Acura pursued an alphabetic naming scheme for its vehicles. Now it is back, and it offers some of the best pieces from the Honda-Acura parts bin. Drawing heavily on the basics of the North American Car of the Year Honda Civic, it features the Civic Si's turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which can be backed by a CVT (Boo) or a 6-speed manual transmission (Yay!) With 200 horsepower on tap, the new Integra promised to be an exciting platform to wind through the fall colors of New England in October. And Teague will tell us all about it. Our interview guest this week is Jeep Vice President of Product Marketing Tavon Brooks. The occasion for the interview was the introduction and press drive of the new long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer L and Wagoneerr L. It took place in and around Bozeman, Montana, right at the gates of Yellowstone. In the news, car prices are leveling off, but new problems are on the horizon for car buyers, and we'll detail them for you. And Hyundai has announced a big, bold plan to offer the public “software-defined vehicles.” We'll tell you what that means and discuss how it could affect you in the future. Our guess is you might not like the idea. All that and more coming up in this episode of “America on the Road.”

Copyright 2022 - The Energy Show, Barry Cinnamon Buying an EV is complicated. The market is dynamic, so brand loyalty doesn't mean much yet. There are huge differences in mileage, range, charging and price. Often the EVs that are in the highest demand are backordered — sometimes for a year or more (just try buying a Ford F-150 Lightning). Heck, just understanding the meaning of MPGe and Level 1/2/3 chargers is enough to delay an EV buying decision and keep pumping gas into that old hydrocarbon heap. Fortunately, there is an abundance of EV information on the web. Almost too much. Comparing the capabilities and specifications for EVs is a daunting task for buyers. To simplify the process there are several EV ratings sites that compare EVs based on standard criteria. The EV comparison site that I have found most useful is the Bloomberg Green EV Rating site. Their Green Rating metric is a weighted score that accounts for every vehicle's range, weight and battery size. In addition, they include three other critical factors that many other comparison sites ignore: price, range and charging speed. The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy has their Greenercar ratings — which includes all “green” vehicles of various shades (including hybrids and very low emission vehicles). The official source for vehicle fuel economy (MPG and MPGe) is at fueleconomy.gov, sponsored by the DOE and EPA. Would you believe it is TEN TIMES more expensive to fill up your tank with gas than it is to charge your EV with rooftop solar? For an analysis of the charging costs of EVs, as well as more details about the above-referenced EV comparison sites, please tune in to this week's Energy Show.

EPA DOCUMENTS REVEAL MORE SPECS ON THE 2022 GMC HUMMER EV PICKUP | CAR & DRIVER - General Motors submitted a preliminary test document to the EPA revealing a few interesting specs on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 pickup. - The new electric truck will go 329 miles on a single charge with 212.7 kWh of usable energy and achieve 47 MPGe combined, according to GM's test data. - The Hummer is as heavy as 9063 pounds, and the big battery alone weighs 2923 pounds - General Motors claimed that the electric pickup would travel 350 miles on a single charge of its 200.0-kWh Ultium battery - According to the EPA filings, the Hummer will achieve a 329-mile EPA combined range, consuming electricity at 47 MPGe EPA combined, some 33 percent less than the Rivian's 70-MPGe rating. - Obviously weight is a huge factor, and we now know a few more details about that, too. The big battery pack alone weighs 2923 pounds, almost as much as an entire Honda Civic. GMC reports in the EPA document a curb weight of 9063 pounds, which is nearly 2000 pounds heavier than the Rivian R1T Launch Edition we just tested. - The data also shows a battery capacity of 617 amp-hours. Multiplied by its 400-volt operating voltage, that yields 246.8 kWh, which should equate with the double-stacked pack's gross capacity. That would mean its usable capacity is 86 percent of the total - GMC says that this test is the final certification for the Hummer's 2022 model year. - Cheaper models will arrive in the next few years, including the dual-motor base model in 2024. EV drivers will be able to use about 35 Tesla Supercharging stations in the country (at least several more are planned for 2022). The document was shared on the TMC forums by member Oliver's MX, who says it came from a relative who works at the facility, and shows the 4860 production yields for Kato Road on January 22, 2022. - 13 of the 14 machines had very good production yields with the majority of each bar being “green” and above 90%. - On the right side of the document, we see the list of defects which caused batteries to be “bad.” The leading cause at 1.4% was “Flap folding in – Cathode”, followed closely by “Single Wind Cut Position Recovery – Cathode” at 1.2%. - If accurate, this one day of production would be enough to build about 10 Model Ys. - While that number does seem low, Oliver was also told by his relative that Tesla has approximately 1,000,000 good cells stockpiled to support the production ramp of Giga Texas. This would be enough for about 1,666 Model Ys. The plant will provide batteries for electric buses and vans produced at the company's microfactories in Rock Hill, South Carolina and Charlotte, respectively. - Arrival also agreed to collaborate with Li-Cycle, a lithium-ion battery recycler, to create a closed-loop EV battery supply chain. Like most other automakers, Arrival is recognizing the reality of supply chain delays and materials shortages and is working to vertically integrate as much of the process as possible, while also maintaining its commitment to sustainability. - Arrival will be refitting an existing warehouse in order to start production in the third quarter of 2022 - Arrival's battery chemistry supplier is LG. The plant should have a production capacity of up to 350,000 battery modules per year, which can be used across Arrival's different commercial vehicle platforms and can be tailored to suit the customer's specific battery requirements, according to the company. SHANGHAI-MADE TESLA MODEL Y COMING TO EUROPE @mortenlund89"Cat's out the bag: MIC MODEL Y COMING TO EUROPE IN Q3 2021" "The Shanghai-made Tesla Model Y will be available in Europe from the third quarter of 2021, sources say. The news, shared on Twitter by Europe Tesla ship tracker Morten Grove, is significant because Tesla boss Elon Musk has pegged Europe as a key market for the electric crossover vehicle." says The Driven: "Musk believes the Model Y will be so popular that it will outsell the Model 3, Model S and Model X combined – and it appears that this may indeed come to pass. Grove cites a “very credible source”, and there are suggestions that the delay of long-range AWD Model 3s reaching Europe could be a result of Tesla deciding to use shipping capacity for the Model Y instead. The same source reportedly said that the refreshed 2022 Model S and Model X will also reach Europe in the next quarter. The news is also interesting because it is known that Model Y production will be a focus of Tesla's upcoming Berlin gigafactory, which it was thought would be operational by May." https://thedriven.io/2021/06/15/shanghai-made-tesla-model-y-available-in-europe-in-coming-months/ TESLA MODEL S ALL ABOUT EFFICIENCY"the 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus has an EPA rating of 402 miles and a combined city and highway MPGe of 117. The 2020 Model S Long Range only had 373 miles of range a combined city and highway MPGe of 111." but now says Teslarati, the new Long Range is even better: "The 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range received a stellar EPA rating of 405 miles of total range with a combined city/highway MPGe of 120. While Elon Musk noted during the Model S Plaid's unveiling that the vehicle's dual motor configuration has 412 miles of range, the company has listed the vehicle with its official 405-mile EPA rating." Previously the battery was around 104kWh but with the increased efficiency, but this could be 2-4kWh smaller. We wait to see. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-refresh-2021-epa-rating/ NISSAN LAUNCHES NEW NOTE AURA WITH E-POWER"Nissan launched the all-new Note Aura premium compact car in Japan, with sales planned to start in autumn. The all-new Note Aura comes exclusively with Nissan's e-POWER electrified powertrain " says Green Car Congress: "e-POWER uses a highly efficient gasoline engine to generate electricity for the electric motor that propels the vehicle. Nissan introduced the system to market in November 2016 on the Note, followed by a version of the Serena minivan in March 2018, the Kicks SUV e-POWER in June 2020, the new version of the Note in December 2020 featuring the second-generation e-POWER system, and a version of the Qashqai in Europe in February 2021." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/06/20210615-epower.html PEUGEOT OPENS ORDER BOOKS FOR E-RIFTERPEUGEOT has opened the order books for its all-new e-Rifter, one of the latest models to join PEUGEOT's growing range of zero emissions vehicles. Customers can place orders from now, with first deliveries expected in November 2021. The PEUGEOT e-Rifter is available in two trim levels, with prices starting from £30,375*. Unveiled earlier this year, the all-new PEUGEOT e-Rifter is built on PEUGEOT's multi-energy EMP2 platform with a 100kw (136hp) electric powertrain capable of up to 260Nm of torque. The PEUGEOT e-Rifter is powered by a 50kWh battery, allowing the vehicle to achieve up to 172 miles from a single charge under WLTP testing. One of the latest models to form part of PEUGEOT's electrification strategy, the e-Rifter is launched as the brand continues its work to offer an electrified variant for every vehicle in its range by 2025. The new PEUGEOT e-Rifter is available in two trim levels, starting at £30,375* for the standard five-seater Allure Premium. This variant is joined by the five-seater GT variant from £32,455*. All versions of the e-Rifter are priced below the £35,000 Government Plug in Grant Threshold. LONDON ELECTRIC CARS OFFERS AFFORDABLE CLASSIC MINI ELECTRIC CONVERSION"What LEC offers is a £25,000 electric conversion, excluding the cost of the actual Mini itself. So you have to source your own classic Mini and LEC will then convert the entire car over to an electric powertrain. For that £25,000 starting price, you get a very small 20 kWh battery pack and a 107 horsepower electric motor from a first-gen Nissan Leaf." writes BMW Blog: "If you want a longer range, you can pay a bit extra for a 25 kWh battery (£27,000) or a 30 kWh battery (£30,000). LEC will even fit a 40 kWh battery but it's a special order because the rear seats have to be removed, to fit the massive battery pack." AutoExpress says: "The electric motor was also sourced from the previous-generation Nissan Leaf, and occupies the same space under the bonnet as the old A-Series engine. It also has the same 107bhp output as the Mk1 Leaf, giving it around twice as much power as a standard Mini. Over the next four years, LEC will expand its roster of classic car conversions, with kits for the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, the Ford Anglia and Lincoln Continental Convertible. By 2025, the firm aims to complete 1,000 conversions from its London workshop." https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/06/14/london-electric-cars-offers-affordable-classic-mini-electric-conversion/ https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mini/355232/lec-launches-affordable-ev-conversion-classic-mini MEET THE WORLD'S FIRST 16 TONNE ELECTRIC TRUCK"There were 10 million electric cars on the world's roads at the end of 2020 as registrations soared by 41% in just one year. But when it comes to hauling heavy loads, most of the world's trucks still run on diesel. But that's starting to change with the introduction in Germany of the world's first 16 tonne all-electric truck. The Volta Zero has already been demonstrated in France, Italy and Spain. It's due to enter service by the end of this year." says World Economic Forum: "Electrifying truck fleets will have a positive impact on urban air quality. According to the United Nations, nine out of 10 of us breathe polluted air. Air quality is at its worst in city centres. The 96 entries in the global league table of the worst air quality locations are all cities. Recent research shows 3.4 early deaths are caused by outdoor air pollution every year. MERCEDES TO UNVEIL FLAGSHIP ELECTRIC SEDAN "Mercedes-Benz is about to unveil a new flagship model it expects to boast market-leading battery range, following through on its pledge to compete in the luxury electric-vehicle segment with top technology. The April 15 debut of the EQS -- the first Mercedes built on dedicated electric-car underpinnings -- will mark a milestone for the German brand that’s been criticized for taking too long to embrace EVs. Next year, Mercedes will be making eight fully electric cars on three continents, Chief Operating Officer Markus Schaefer said in a phone interview." writes Bloomberg: "The more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) of range Mercedes expects the EQS to achieve in lab testing is another indication Germany’s carmakers will have something to say about Tesla Inc.’s early domination of the EV space. The battery range Mercedes has touted for the EQS would exceed the 412 miles that Tesla estimates for the Long Range version of the Model S. The company provides U.S. data on its order website, which can vary from the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure used in Europe and elsewhere. Startup Lucid Motors Inc. has said it will sell a version of its Air sedan that offers 517 miles of range, and Tesla has estimated the Model S Plaid+ slated for late this year will get 520 miles." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-26/mercedes-expects-to-raise-the-electric-bar-with-flagship-sedan DHL EXPRESS DEPLOYS NEARLY 100 NEW LIGHTNING ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS IN U.S. DHL Express – the world’s leading provider of international express shipping services – continues making investments to meet its ambitious goals for emissions reduction and climate protection. Following a successful initial pilot program using nine Lightning Electric Ford Transit 350HD electric vans in the U.S. late last year, the company plans to deploy another 89 electric vehicles this year in New York and California. Produced by Lightning eMotors, a designer and manufacturer of complete zero-emission-vehicle (ZEV) solutions for commercial and government fleets, the new electric vehicles are highly durable and capable of achieving 61 MPGe, compared to 13 MPG for similar gas-powered vans. They also include proprietary telematics and analytics software, which will aid with route optimization, driver training and vehicle efficiencies. Lightning eMotors, based in Loveland, Colorado, designs and manufactures zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, including delivery trucks, shuttle buses, passenger vans, chassis-cab models, city transit buses, and motor coaches. WAYMO PROVIDES LOOK INSIDE SELF-DRIVING TRUCK TESTING "Autonomous vehicle developer Waymo offered a look inside the day-to-day testing of its self-driving trucks on public roads through a virtual ride-along event for members of the press. During the March 24 live demonstration, a Class 8 tractor outfitted with Waymo’s automated driving system drove autonomously on highways near the company’s operations center outside of Phoenix. With a safety driver sitting behind the wheel, the truck autonomously performed lane changes and merges while negotiating moderate traffic, including passenger cars, a motorcycle and other large commercial trucks, on Interstate 10 and Arizona Route 202." according to ttnews.com@: "Waymo’s trucking program, named Waymo Via, is actively testing and developing technology designed to enable SAE Level 4 automated driving, meaning the truck would be able to drive itself with no human input or backup under certain conditions. this latest version of the Waymo Driver features higher-resolution lidar to create 3D images of the vehicle’s surroundings, as well as 360-degree camera sensors that can detect objects more than 500 meters away. Waymo debuted the fifth-generation system last year on electric Jaguar I-Pace passenger cars and recently adapted it to its trucking platform as well." https://www.ttnews.com/articles/waymo-provides-look-inside-self-driving-truck-testing BYD YUAN PRO ARRIVES WITH A COBALT-FREE LFP BATTERY "Recently, BYD renamed the Yuan EV to Yuan Pro and gave it a new more modern front, similar to the BYD Han EV. This electric car is now available to order in China and comes with a 50,1 kWh BYD Blade Battery for a NEDC range of 401 km." says Pedro at PushEVs.com: "The BYD Yuan Pro looks nice, however, the Han EV and D1 will probably be the most popular models for a while. The BYD D1 – that resembles a VW ID.3 – was initially aimed for car sharing services, but is now also available for private buyers with a starting price of 151.800 yuan (19.532 euros). Anyway, now BYD has a vast electric car offer in China that will eventually arrive to other important markets (Europe, North America and Australia). Production capacity is growing extremely fast and currently only the smallest electric car model BYD e1 still has a NCM battery, all other models already got upgraded to LFP (LiFePO4) battery cells with CTP (cell-to-pack) batteries." https://pushevs.com/2021/03/22/byd-yuan-pro-arrives-with-a-cobalt-free-lfp-battery/ TOP SIX ELECTRIC CARS COMING TO AUSTRALIA IN 2021 "As we round up the end of the first quarter of 2021 it’s time to take stock of the (gradually) increasing choice for drivers on the local EV market, and take a look at what’s to come. As The Driven noted in this article here, the arrival of the MG ZS EV, which is officially Australia’s cheapest EV at $40,990 (excluding on-roads), and the Porsche Taycan which starts at $191,000 before on-roads, have both made a splash on the market." The decision, issued in January by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), postpones imposing a penalty increase from the beginning of model year 2019 to model year 2022. A quick preface, this podcast is being recorded a few days late as I had a winter virus which stopped me working. But for completeness, and for those who catch up weekly, a short podcast with the key headlines. On today’s podcast: Volkswagen ID.4 Achieved 190 Miles of Real World Range Netherlands: Plug-In Sales Up 40% In January 2021 Electric cars save drivers £900 in tax during the first year alone JLR seeks partner for Jaguar EV platform Show #1006 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 27th February. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 ACHIEVED 190 MILES OF REAL WORLD RANGE "A 2021 ID.4 1st Edition model achieved a result of 190 miles in our 75-mph highway range test, against an EPA combined range estimate of 250 miles. The ID.4 recorded 82 MPGe in our test, which is close to the EPA's 89 MPGe highway estimate." said Car & Driver: "The version of the ID.4 we tested was a rear-wheel-drive model with a 201-horsepower electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack with 77.0-kWh of usable capacity. It carried an as-tested price of $45,190. The Tesla Model Y Long Range, which has all-wheel drive and an 75.0-kWh battery pack, bested the Volkswagen in the same test, achieving a range of 220 miles" Model Y EPA is 326 miles for $48,990. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a35633671/2021-volkswagen-id4-range-tested/ NETHERLANDS: PLUG-IN SALES UP 40% IN JANUARY 2021 The Netherlands starts the year 2021 pretty well with a 40% increase in plug-in electric car registrations year-over-year to 4,683. That's 13.3% of the total market (compared to 7.2% a year ago and 25% in the 12-months of 2020). The overall market was down 21%, by the way." says InsideEVs: "January was quite an interesting month as most of the sales were plug-in hybrids. According to EV Sales Blog, it has a lot to do with the car allocation and self-registrations of BEVs in the late 2020 to lower the average emission results. There are no signs of the Volkswagen ID.3 or the Tesla Model 3 (the kings of 2020) among the top plug-ins in January. On the other hand, we see tons of plug-in hybrids from manufacturers that not needed to rush in December 2020 - Volvo and BMW. The situation probably will start to normalize over the next few months. Then we will again see new BEV registrations in high numbers we believe." https://insideevs.com/news/491106/netherlands-plugin-sales-january-2021/ ELECTRIC CARS SAVE DRIVERS £900 IN TAX DURING THE FIRST YEAR ALONE "Choosing an electric vehicle (EV) over a petrol car cuts tax bills by an average of almost £900 in the first year alone, according to new research. The study by the RAC Foundation found although this tax break doesn’t always save drivers money, it is costing the government millions in lost revenue. The RAC Foundation analysis suggested pure electric cars cost the Chancellor an average of £897 during the first 12 months of its life when compared with petrol-powered vehicles. And when compared with diesel-powered cars, the figure is even higher, at £1,139." according to Motor1: "The organisation looked at 10 of the UK’s best-selling electric cars and their petrol and diesel alternatives, then compared the tax payments. Not only did this include the first-year VED rate, or ‘showroom tax’, but it also used average mileage data to work out the lost fuel duty receipts and lost VAT receipts." https://uk.motor1.com/news/490426/electric-car-tax-breaks-government JLR SEEKS PARTNER FOR JAGUAR EV PLATFORM "Jaguar Land Rover will look outside the company to find a platform for new full-electric Jaguar models, CEO Thierry Bollore said. The UK automaker plans to make its Jaguar brand all-electric starting in 2025, dropping combustion engines as the marque’s sedans and crossovers reach the end of their life cycles. Land Rover will get its first battery-powered vehicle in 2024 but will not be electric-only in the new future." according to Automotive News Europe: "The plan includes giving Jaguar its own standalone electric platform, which would be expensive to produce in-house for a brand that is expected to remain low-volume, below even the 103,000 vehicles it sold worldwide last year." https://www.autonews.com/automakers-suppliers/jlr-seeks-partner-jaguar-ev-platform You can listen to all 1005 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Have you seen MPGe ratings and wondered what that little "e" is about? It doesn't stand for electric, but it does have to do with EVs. In this episode, take a look at the development and calculations behind MPGe as an EPA rating. Plus, you'll hear about all the other ratings that will be important to consumers as more and more battery-electric vehicles are sold off the lot. For this extra episode of The NOLN Podcast, take a dive into the development and numbers behind the measurement of EV efficiency.
Show #810 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th June 2020. LUCID: DON'T CALL US "TESLA KILLERS" "With a brand-new, state-of-the-art factory nearing completion in the Southwest desert and an energy-dense battery pack using cylindrical cells, it's all-too tempting to set up a rivalry between Lucid Motors and Tesla. Heck, it's a trope that we've been guilty of using in the past." says Ars Technica: "But it's a bad take, according to Peter Rawlinson, Lucid's CEO and CTO. "Please don't describe us as a Tesla killer," he told me. "The world's big enough that we can both thrive and prosper alongside each other.". the Air will use a 900V electrical architecture, higher than even the Porsche Taycan. Rawlinson said that the Air has also moved to a new in-house silicon carbide inverter, as well as a switch from induction to permanent magnet motors front and rear. The Air's cylindrical lithium-ion cells will be made by LG Chem, but Lucid has designed and will build the packs itself. And Formula E has contributed to the management of the packs—Lucid supplies batteries to all the teams in that race series. The company's experience in Formula E has taught it a lot about predictive modeling of degradation." Peter Rawlinson was VP on Vehicle Engineering at Tesla before 2013. He said: "They're our own design, which is very innovative—they've got very low cogging torque, so ultra-efficient. We've got our own epicyclic reduction transmission, our own differential, all which is super-innovative, state of the art. The rotor will spin to 20,000rpm, and each of those in standard form is rated at 600hp (447kW)," he said, adding that the combined motor, gearbox, differential, and inverter weighs in at just 160lbs (73kg). The key metric is volumetric power density, which is creeping up very close to 17kW per liter," Rawlinson told me. "And I think that's unprecedented—that's twice as good as any competitor out there that I'm aware of. That's a cornerstone of what we've done with LG Chem now in our production supply agreement. We've worked with them to help develop the cell chemistry to a much higher standard, particularly making it degrade less as a consequence of repeated fast charging. That's important because the 900V architecture has been developed very much with our fast-charge network partner Electrify America in mind." The same strategy was used by the company’s engineers and test drivers in November last year, and they’ve done it again. This time around, however, they’ve disguised the all-electric crossover to look like a Kia." says Motor1.com: "According to preliminary information, power will be provided by two electric motors for a combined output of approximately 302 horsepower. The battery electric vehicle should be capable of covering up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) in the WLTP test at a single charge, which will be around 277 miles in the EPA evaluation." https://www.motor1.com/news/428784/vw-id4-spied-again/ 2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME VS 2020 FORD ESCAPE PHEV SPEC COMPARISON Price Ford: SE PHEV retails for $33,040, while the others are priced at $35,620 and $38,835 respectively. RAV4: Pricing has not yet been shared though we assume it will start around the $40k mark in the US, and somewhere between $47,000 and $50,000 in Canada. "The Toyota RAV4 Prime is meant to do it all. The Prime is based on the Hybrid’s 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine however the hybrid is further boosted by the more powerful motor-generators and new high-capacity 17.8-kWh Lithium-Ion battery increase system output to 302-horsepower, from 219." says Motor Illustrated: "Part of the setup is an electric motor on the rear axle that has no physical link to the front. This second motor is standard on all RAV4 Hybrid and Prime thus all are AWD. Performance is plentiful with a 0-100 km/h time of only 6.2 seconds (0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds). Fun fact: This makes the RAV4 Prime the second fastest accelerating Toyota after the GR Supra. The combined fuel consumption rating of 2.6Le/100km, or 90 MPGe. The battery-only range is 67 kilometers, or 42 miles. The 2020 Ford Escape PHEV is different in that it is FWD only, contrary to the Hybrid version, which will prove to be an obstacle for much of Canada and the Northern regions of the US. It too is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine and it, with the associated electric motor, produces a total system output of 221-horsepower. The 14.4-kWh battery-only range is rated at least 48 kilometers in Canada, or 37 miles in the US." The high-speed electric vehicle charging network will also announce an additional eight charging station locations expected to open throughout the province by the end of this year." says Tom Molougney for InsideEVs: "Electrify Canada already has four charging station sites open in Ontario, with fifteen more in the planning stage in Ontario and Quebec, so it's good to see the western part of the country finally getting some love also. Electrify Canada's first phase of deployment includes the installation of a total of 32 charging station sites. Those include the nineteen in Quebec and Ontario and thirteen in Alberta and British Colombia." https://insideevs.com/news/428806/electrify-canada-expands-british-columbia/ TESLA RECEIVES APPROVAL TO BECOME AN ELECTRIC UTILITY PROVIDER IN THE UK "Tesla has officially been granted an electricity generation license in the United Kingdom, in response to the electric car maker’s application last April. Reports indicate that the approval paves the way for Tesla to establish a virtual power plant in the region, which would be managed by its custom Autobidder software, a real-time trading and control platform that enables power producers to monetize battery assets." says Simon at TEslarati: "The UK’s recent approval for Tesla’s application is a noteworthy milestone for Tesla Energy, whose potential remains largely untapped. Tesla Energy is a big business, and it builds on two of the company’s most prominent strengths: software and batteries. This is one of the reasons why Tesla’s big battery in South Australia, the Hornsdale Power Reserve, has been so successful. The massive Powerpack farm is managed by Autobidder, the same system that the company is reportedly poised to utilize in the UK." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-energy-utility-provider-application-uk-approved/ FORD MUSTANG MACH-E CUSTOMERS TO RECEIVE 250 KWH ELECTRIFY AMERICA CREDIT Ford Mustang Mach-E owners will receive 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging through FordPass Rewards at Electrify America fast-charging stations to kick-start their electric vehicle experience with Ford. For Mustang Mach-E owners with the extended-range battery, the 250 kilowatt-hours of fast- charging energy is equal to more than three fill-ups. For standard-range battery models, the 250 kilowatt-hours of fast charging energy is equal to more than five fill-ups. This is in addition to the two years of complimentary access Mustang Mach-E customers automatically receive to the recently expanded FordPass Charging Network for easy pay-as-you-go charging. Electrify America’s network, part of the FordPass Charging Network, offers the largest number of high-powered public charging stations on the market today. 100 KWH TESLA MODEL 3 APPEARS ONLINE "We learned late last year from Twitter user @greentheonly that Tesla’s Model 3 firmware had contained references to a 100 kWh battery pack since at least March of 2019. Speculation was interesting at the time, but no Model 3 vehicles had been found to include that size battery pack." writes The Street.com: "That may have changed today, with Twitter user @zeus7f1 sharing a screenshot of a Tesla Model 3 display in Factory Mode. While a screenshot like this could be easily faked, the pack size is listed as 100 kWh here." 33% more energy. Long LONG Range? @greentheonly: I know they exist. Was hoping to get direct access to one soon, but it looks like you beat me to it ;) Elon took to Twitter to DENY the pack was in development. So...it's done?! Clarity PHEV’s drive motor produces 181-horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque, drawing power from electricity generated by the gasoline engine and from a 17-kilowatt hour (kWh) battery pack with a recharge time of just 2.5 hours at 240 volts. JEEP Jeep will introduce plug-in hybrid versions of the Wrangler, Compass, and Renegade. Autoblog says: "The one we’re most interested in is the Wrangler 4xe. Leasing.com: "Renault Captur E-Tech, uses the same 1.6-litre engine which is mated to a plug-in hybrid system with an increased 9.8kWH battery pack and 400v electrical system. It can run at 100% electric for 30 miles with a top speed of 85mph. Renault claims the Captur E-Tech can offer 188mpg and emits 34g/km of CO2. Unique driving modes such as ‘Sport’ allows both the petrol and electric engines to combine to take full advantage of available power. ‘E-Save’ on the other hand limits the use of the electric motor and can save at least 40 percent of battery power by drawing it from the combustion motor. https://leasing.com/car-leasing-news/renault-clio-hybrid-and-captur-plug-in-hybrid-to-debut-at-brussels-motor-show/ SEAT "Cupra is hard at work developing a plug-in hybrid version of the next-generation Seat Leon set to premiere on January 28." according to CarScoops: "The new Seat Leon will be based on an updated version of the VW Group’s MQB platform, much like the new VW Golf and Skoda Octavia and sold in a number of petrol and diesel-powered guises. Cupra, the Spanish automaker’s performance car sub-brand will initially launch a plug-in hybrid version with 241 hp. The added grunt should help propel it to 62 mph (100 km/h) in roughly 6.5 seconds and will be good for an all-electric of up to 35 miles (56 km) thanks to the 13 kWh battery pack." https://www.carscoops.com/2020/01/seat-confirms-upcoming-leon-cupra-with-a-241-hp-plug-in-hybrid-powertrain/ SKODA In teh UK: "Škoda’s much-anticipated Superb iV plug-in hybrid is now available to order, priced from £31,970. The result is sub-40g/km CO2 emissions with an electric-only range of up to 35 miles and total range of up to 578 miles." https://fleetworld.co.uk/first-ever-plug-in-hybrid-skoda-opens-for-orders/ Meanwile AutoExpress reports: "The next Skoda Octavia vRS hot hatch will come with petrol, diesel and plug-in performance options. VW Group’s plug-in hybrid powertrain to become a performance variant in its own right. The new Octavia vRS PHEV will use the same 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine as the recently launched Golf GTE. No power figures have been confirmed for the hot hybrid, but Auto Express understands that the new model is being tuned to match the output of the petrol vRS. That model will use the 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor. The car will have a battery of at least 13kWh. that battery will give it the ability to go for about 30 miles on electricity alone" https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/skoda/octavia/108748/new-2020-skoda-octavia-vrs-ready-for-hybrid-power VW Golf GTE - 31 miles range but not currently availble to order in some countries. PAssat GTE - again unavailable due to high demand. Other honourable mentions: Volvo XC90 T8 four-cylinder petrols. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid V6 petrol. Mitsubishi Outlander for 30 miles of range. Hyundai IONIQ PHEV starts at £26,000 but 39 miles of range. Mercedes-Benz C-Class C350 E Saloon and Estate have a 6.2kWh pack. TONY BULLOCK I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have and provide some perspective as an owner of a Niro PHEV since August 2018 - one who fully intends to get a BEV as his next car. So far I've done just over 9,400 miles and the vast majority of that has been on battery. Why I chose the PHEV: I had a 63-plate Toyota diesel that I hated driving for environmental reasons. We needed something bigger for the family to take luggage, guitars, friends etc. around. There wasn't anything in my price range that was suitable. The eNiro would have fitted the bill for practical reasons, but it's still pricey. Toyota salesman tried to sell me a hybrid. One Kia salesman tried to sell me a Sportage diesel to clear stock. The same dealer subsequently let me drive their eNiro which he absolutely raved about! :-) I picked up the PHEV from the Midlands and drove it back to Kent. It only took about a week to get it but it was the very last in the UK, otherwise it was a three month wait. If a suitable BEV for my family's lifestyle had been available and affordable in July 2018 then I'd have definitely got one. I certainly don't regret getting the PHEV, but I wish I could have got the BEV. Show #665 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 14th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. CHINA SUSPENDS FURTHER ELECTRIC VEHICLE SUBSIDY CUTS "Beijing is suspending its plan to completely remove electric vehicle purchase subsidies this year, China’s chief minster of industry said on Saturday, as the government moves to stem further collapse spurred by the large-scale cuts which began in June." reports Technode.com: "The move is a big positive for the industry, and is expected to calm the market and preempt widepread bankruptcies throughout the EV industry. China’s sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) dropped 6% year on year to 1.2 million units in 2019, the first decline in 10 years since Beijing began providing incentives on EV purchases, according to government figures. NEVs include fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid EVs, and fuel cell EVs.China had initially planned a schedule of subsidy reductions each year beginning in 2016 to conclude with complete elimination of EV subsidies after 2020, reported Bloomberg, which all reductions, including the most recent in June, adhered to. The June cuts reduced by half subsidies from 2018, bringing the discount on an EV with an estimated 400 kilometer range to RMB 25,000 (roughly $3,625), for example." https://technode.com/2020/01/13/minister-miao-wei-no-subsidy-cut/ Meanwhile Reuters adds: "Automakers who stand to benefit include Tesla (TSLA.O), which started making deliveries from its $2-billion Shanghai plant this month and secured NEV subsidies in December, Warren Buffett-backed Chinese electric car maker BYD (002594.SZ) as well as aspiring Tesla-challenger Nio Inc (NIO.N)." https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-china-autos/china-says-no-significant-cut-in-new-energy-vehicle-subsidies-in-2020-idUKKBN1ZA0FB PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S IS NEW LEAST-EFFICIENT EV "The EPA rating for the new Porsche Taycan Turbo S has been posted to fueleconomy.gov, and the results aren’t all that pretty. The Taycan is rated at just 68 MPGe with 192 miles of range, despite the car’s large 93 kWh battery." according to electrek: "While not a big drop from the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan Turbo S and its higher power delivery resulted in 1 less MPGe, and 9 miles less range than the Turbo’s 69 MPGe and 201 miles. This rating puts the car at the bottom of the heap for current electric vehicle efficiency. It is the least-efficient electric vehicle currently available in the US, taking the spot previously held by the Taycan Turbo. It is less efficient than large electric SUV/crossovers like the Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X." https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/14/porsche-taycan-turbo-s-is-new-least-efficient-ev-68-mpge-192-miles-epa-range/# TESLA FILED MODEL Y CERTIFICATION PAPERS "According to Twitter user Alter Viggo, on January 9, Tesla filed certification papers with the California Air Resources Board for the Model Y. Why is that news? Because in 2017, Tesla began delivering Model 3 sedans to customers 25 days after it filed similar certification papers for the Model 3 with CARB." says Teslarati: "Twitter used Ryan McCaffery added this useful tidbit: “We already know that there will be Founders Series Y’s (there weren’t any Founders 3’s), and that those Founders cars are Performance models. So the fact that this listing is for PY does corroborate your hypothesis.” In other words, this may be for just a select few Model Ys (which could be hand built), while real production and deliveries commence in subsequent months or quarters." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/14/tesla-filed-model-y-certification-papers-with-carb-on-january-9-will-deliveries-begin-next-month/ AMAZON ALREADY HAS ELECTRIC DELIVERY TRUCKS "Ben Sullins (Teslanomics) recently posted a short video clip on Twitter showing what appeared to be an all-electric Ford Transit Amazon delivery van. It actually said 100 percent electric on the vehicle itself. Sean Mitchell took notice, only to learn that the conversion was performed by a company near him that he'd previously visited." picks up InsideEVs: "The Colorado-based company — Lightning Systems — converts Class 3 to Class 8 diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles to fully electric. " https://insideevs.com/news/392555/video-amazon-electric-delivery-trucks/ SMOG IN SOUTHERN EUROPE SPARKS CAR BANS AND STREET PROTESTS "Cities across southern Europe are experiencing dangerously high levels of smog caused by a prolonged period of dry sunny weather and light winds." according to BBC News: "Temporary bans on diesel vehicles have been ordered in major Italian cities, including the capital, Rome, in an effort to reduce the pollution. In Rome, diesel cars, vans and motorbikes have been banned during peak times, while other polluting vehicles have been banned altogether. The restrictions, which are set to remain in place over the next three days, are expected to affect about one million vehicles." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51132764 700,000 TOYOTAS AND LEXUSES NAMED IN FUEL PUMP RECALL And finally from Autoblog: "In an announcement posted to its corporate press room, Toyota made known a voluntary safety recall on select 2018 and 2019 Toyota and Lexus models. The recall includes roughly 696,000 vehicles and deals with a fuel pump that might stop working. An internal investigation into the issue is under way." https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-is-conducting-a-safety-recall-involving-certain-toyota-and-lexus-vehicles-2/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Which car company would you like to see doing more to embrace electrification? Show #631 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 4th November 2019. A MESSAGE FROM TRY EV "Try EV aims to transform the car purchasing process, educate on owning an EV and ignite EV interest. Try EV promotes “electrify to buy”. It is a platform to enable customers to learn, compare, customise and experiment with EVs before making a final buying decision. To scale the business growth, the brand is raising funds to invest in “pop-up” retail facilities, to attract key talent, to facilitate partnerships with major leasing companies, OEMs and charging networks and to refine marketing and promotion efforts. The revenue model incorporates memberships, sales commission, test drive fees and credit lines. Starting in London initially, additional revenue is expected from activities related to after-sales engagement." crowdcube.com/tryev PRODUCTION OF THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 STARTS IN ZWICKAU From VW: "Today saw the official start of series production of the ID.301. The first car in the new generation of electric vehicles (EVs) – a white ID.3 – rolled off the assembly line watched by Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and Group CEO Dr. Herbert Diess. The Volkswagen Group plans to sell some 22 million EVs worldwide by 2028, thus helping EVs make the breakthrough. Zwickau has a key role to play in this endeavor: For the first time, a large car manufacturing plant is being entirely converted to e-mobility, with investments running at €1.2 billion. Zwickau is already scheduled to produce some 100,000 electric models next year. From 2021, up to 330,000 EVs will leave the assembly line each year, making the site the largest and most efficient EV factory in Europe and a trailblazer in the transformation of Volkswagen’s global production network. With the phased transformation of the Zwickau factory, Volkswagen is fully converting a large car manufacturing plant to e-mobility for the first time. Some €1.2 billion is being invested in the conversion. In the final expansion stage from 2021, six MEB models from three Group brands will be built in Zwickau. Qualification measures are preparing all 8,000 employees for EV production and working with high-voltage technology. In total, the Zwickau team will have completed some 13,000 training days by the end of 2020, thus ensuring future-proof jobs at the Zwickau plant." "The Volkswagen ID.3 will be available with 3 battery options: Standard range: 45 kWh (usable) and 330 km of WLTP range, Mid range: 58 kWh (usable) and 420 km of WLTP range, Long range: 77 kWh (usable) and 550 km of WLTP range" says Pedro at PushEVs: "The Chinese battery maker CATL intends to start European production by the end of 2020 near Erfurt, capital of the German state of Thuringia. My guess is that CATL will produce the standard range battery pack, therefore I don’t expect the entry-level variant to be available in 2020. the Volkswagen ID.3, it seems to be the only electric car with production figures that could match the Tesla Model 3 in 2021. Most electric cars have ridiculous production figures that prove that they are just vanity projects and automakers aren’t serious about them." "According to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), today the production rate on a single morning shift is about 30 cars per day. It will gradually increase over the ramp-up phase to not encounter any setback along the way, towards up to 800 cars per day using one production line over three shifts from Spring 2020." says InsideEVs: "Interestingly, when the second production line goes online, up to 1,500 electric cars will be produced over three shifts. That should be enough to fulfill the target of producing 330,000 MEB-based BEVs annually. Volkswagen is also testing production of two other models in Zwickau: SEAT el-Born -- Volkswagen ID.4 (Volkswagen ID. CROZZ concept). An Audi model is expected in summer 2020 (using a second production line). That leaves us with two more free slots." Gus at InsideEVs also had an interesting take on why it's taking so long: "The ID.3 production started eight months before the promised delivery date, or with four times more anticipation than a regular car would require. the plant is not entirely dedicated to EVs nowadays. Coincidence or not, deliveries for the ID.3 will start precisely when the production of combustion-engined cars stops there. That is when the rest of Zwickau's conversion to e-mobility will take place. We have contacted Volkswagen and got one more reason for the production to start so early: the German carmaker wants to get the ID.3 right in every sense. In order to do that, it will count on its employees. " https://pushevs.com/2019/11/04/production-of-the-id-3-starts-in-zwickau/ https://insideevs.com/news/380318/vw-id3-production-30-day/ https://insideevs.com/news/380506/vw-id3-delay-reach-market/ VW CEO DIESS SAYS BATTERIES ARE BETTER THAN HYDROGEN “At Volkswagen’s ceremony celebrating the start of ID.3 production, CEO Herbert Diess made several comments on the electrification of the industry. In particular, he stated that batteries, as opposed to hydrogen, are a quicker and cheaper way to reduce automotive industry emissions. He also called for a price on carbon and committed to reducing his company’s fleet carbon emissions by 30% by 2025, and to zero carbon by 2050." reports Electrek: "German Chancellor Angela Merkel also spoke at the event. She called for the German government to increase electric car incentives and set a target for the country to install a million public charging stations by 2030 to fuel 7-10 million German EVs by the same year." 2020 VW E-GOLF ELECTRIC CAR RANGE FALLS "For its last year, though, the e-Golf loses a little bit of range—2 miles, to be exact. " says Green Car Reports: "The official EPA range for the 2020 e-Golf falls to 123 miles, from 125 miles for the 2017-2019 editions of the model. Likewise, efficiency figures for the model change significantly—from 119 MPGe (28 kwh/100 miles) to 113 MPGe (30 kwh/100 miles). Spokesman Mark Gillies confirmed to Green Car Reports that there is no change for the 2020 e-Golf, versus 2019, and that it comes down to changes in EPA testing procedure. So real-world range between vehicles of the two model years should be identical." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125806_2020-vw-e-golf-electric-car-range-falls-just-before-id-ev-range-rises BMW X3 PHEV BREAKS COVER WITH 292 HP, UP TO 20 MILES ELECTRIC RANGE "While the automotive world is awaiting the debut of the all-electric BMW X3 next year, the Bavarian company has quietly introduced a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the premium SUV. Initially previewed earlier this year, the X3 xDrive30e is set to enter production at BMW’s Spartanburg plant next month and go on sale worldwide in the spring of 2020." according to Motor1.com "Integrated into the transmission is an electric motor capable of pushing out 109 hp (80 kW). A number most customers will probably be more interested in is 20 – that’s how many miles (32 kilometers) the plug-in SUV could travel solely on electric energy before the combustion engine kicks in, according to BMW USA's estimates." https://www.motor1.com/news/380196/bmw-x3-xdrive30e-unveiled/ DIESEL BAN FOR BRISTOL APPROVED "Bristol will become the first city in the UK to ban diesel cars from its streets, to tackle illegal levels of air pollution. Bristol City Council voted for the plans to remove privately-owned diesel cars from the city centre between 7am and 3pm each day." says Chris Lilly for Next Green Car: "The proposed scheme still needs government approval, but is set to start in 2021. Any diesel vehicles entering the zone within that time will incur a fine. Vehicles such as those used by the emergency services will be exempt from penalties, while commercial vehicles will have to pay to enter the area. Number plate recognition systems will be used to enforce the system, though details of how much fines are set to be are yet to be decided. Should the zone come into force in 2021, it is expected that air pollution levels will drop to compliant levels by 2025." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8785/diesel-ban-for-bristol-approved/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 1st August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Wednesday 1st August will see the Q2 Earnings Call for Tesla after the closing bell. TESLA TAKES 45% OF PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS SALES IN U.S. Mark Kane for Inside EV's: "In June, Tesla sold some 11,362 electric cars in the U.S., according to IEVs estimations, and that’s enough to achieve a new record share for the plug-in market. Believe it or not 45% of all plug-in cars sold last month (25,179) were Tesla cars, and that’s when you include plug-in hybrids. Limiting it to just BEVs (14,612), Tesla dominated the market at nearly 78%." The great unknown, for now, is Model 3 sales. How much did production slip back from 5000 a week after they hit that target in the final week of Q2? How quickly have they got back to 5,000? Elon immediately announced 6,000 being the next milestone, are they on target for that? In the first 6 months of the 2018 an estimated 124,687 plug-in electric vehicles have been sold in the U.S. With 6 months of the year remaining, if you put a 20,000 a month number on the Model 3, which would be revised down to allow for factory shutdown but revised up for increased ramp on the S curve even so that would be 120,000 Model 3’s out the gate in H2 2018. TESLA EXPLORES BUILDING GIGAFACTORY IN EUROPE: WALL STREET JOURNAL "Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) is in talks with authorities in Germany and the Netherlands to build its first major European factory, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing officials involved in the matter." writes Sonam Rai for Reuters: "Tesla already has an engineering division in Pruem, Germany, that is about 30 kms from Belgium and about 100 kms from the French border." All future Gigafactories such as this one the one announced for China, Gigafactory 3, will be used to both produce the batteries and cars too. FIRST COMPLETE FF 91 BODY-IN-WHITE "Faraday Future announced today that the first complete body-in-white for the FF91 has arrived at the Hanford factory." That's effectively the first completed structural frame without anything bolted on. Senior VP of Manufacturing for FF, Dag Reckhorn, said: "There is no question that this team and our suppliers have faced many significant challenges in getting FF 91 to this point, and even slightly ahead of schedule. This is really a huge accomplishment over these past two years. All while focusing on the true luxury and quality of the final product." The order book for FF 91 early users – aka "FF Futurists" – has been open since the start of 2018 and first deliveries are due starting in December of this year through the middle of 2019. BMW TO BUILD 1 BILLION EURO ELECTRIC CAR FACTORY IN HUNGARY "BMW said it is investing 1 billion euros (US$1.17 bln) in a new car factory in Debrecen, Hungary capable of building electric cars. The plant will have a production capacity of 150,000 cars a year and be able to make both electric and combustion engined vehicles. BMW said it will help the carmaker to expand its manufacturing capacity in Europe, where 45 percent of its cars are sold." UPS TO TEST ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH THOR UPS today announced a collaboration with Thor Trucks to develop and test a fully-electric class 6 delivery truck in Los Angeles, California. The truck is expected to be ready for deployment later this year. The Thor electric delivery truck will have a driving range of approximately 100 miles powered by a Thor-designed and built battery that will be lightweight, durable and allow long-range driving distances. For six months, UPS will test the medium-duty electric delivery truck as part of its fleet. Testing will include off-road evaluation to address durability, battery capacity, technical integration, engineering and any items found during on-road testing. Depending on the success of the deployment, UPS may make additional purchases of the electric vehicle. Using its “Rolling Laboratory” approach, UPS deploys about 9,300 low-emission vehicles to determine which technology works best in each route configuration. This includes all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, ethanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and propane. https://pressroom.ups.com/pressroom/ContentDetailsViewer.page?ConceptType=PressReleases MERCEDES PRESENTS HYDROGEN FUEL CELL SPRINTER CONCEPT Daimler are moving forward with electrifying not just their cars but vans and trucks too. "Mercedes will start testing prototypes of a fuel-cell powered Sprinter, called F-Cell. Like the GLC with the same suffix, it draws electricity from either the hydrogen stored in cylindrical tanks in the underbody, or a small battery pack that can be charged externally." according to Fleet Europe.com: "That makes this Sprinter F-Cell the first ‘plug in hybrid’ zero-emission van ever, combining electricity produced in the fuel cell with current stored in the battery pack. There is a problem, however: the lack of hydrogen fuelling infrastructure. That is why Mercedes adds a battery pack – albeit a relatively small one. It extends the range by a mere 30 km at best – but that could suffice to get to the next hydrogen pump." TOYOTA PLOTS THE FUTURE OF ZERO-EMISSION HAULAGE "Toyota has strengthened its pursuit of zero-emission freight transport with the unveiling of a new, second-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck that can cover 300 miles on a full tank. The new Beta vehicle was presented to media and industry leaders at the Center for Automotive Research in Michigan" "The Alpha truck had a 36.3-tonne gross combined weight capacity and a driving range of more than 200 miles on a hydrogen fill-up. Two Mirai fuel cell stacks and a 12kW/h battery supported an output of more than 670bhp and 1,796Nm of torque. The new Project Portal Beta maintains these power and torque figures but with an extended range and improvements in other key performance metrics." UPDATE FROM WORKHORSE EV TRUCK TESTS Workhorse Group today provided an update on milestones achieved during its ongoing real-world pilot testing of its N-GEN all-electric vehicles: The N-GEN has demonstrated a fuel efficiency, as expressed in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), that averages 40MPGe for its 450 cubic foot electric van, and 75MPGe for its 200 cubic foot electric van, representing up to a 500% improvement versus conventional gas delivery vans. More than 100,000 packages delivered by Workhorse-employed drivers and delivery associates, offering invaluable insights to optimize the N-GEN production vehicle design for last-mile delivery workers. HARLEY DAVIDSON ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE COMING 2019 "The Harley-Davidson electric motorcycle has been a long time coming. First announced as Project LiveWire back in 2014, the bike has gone through some design changes as well as becoming only one of the electric bikes the company plans to release over the next few years. Finally, though, it looks as if the LiveWire will be available next year." reports Engadget: "The LiveWire is being hailed as "the first in a broad, no-clutch 'twist and go' portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of the sport" KINGFISHER TO INSTALL BATTERY STORAGE AT B&Q DISTRIBUTION CENTRE "Home improvement retail giant Kingfisher has announced (30 July) that it will install energy storage facilities at one of its B&Q distribution centres" - for translation, B&Q is Home Depot. Currently, around 35% of the power generated by the solar panels at the site is exported back to the grid as surplus, but the energy storage facility, which is set to be completed in September, will enable B&Q to store up to 40% of the energy generated by the PV panels and release it back to the building during periods of peak pricing or overnight. In addition to storing energy for use inside the centre, the battery installation will also power new electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the car park of the centre. The 40 kWh Leaf is rated at 142hp, but the long-range model will have 200 hp on tap. " AutoEvolution say: "At the EVS29 electric vehicle convention in 2016, Nissan let it slip that it’s working on a 60-kWh battery. In all likelihood, it is this battery that we’ll find in the E-Plus, shadowing the capacity and range of the entry-level version of the Tesla Model 3." https://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2018/07/long-range-nissan-leaf-e-plus-coming-2019-will-200-hp.html https://www.autoevolution.com/news/new-nissan-leaf-version-coming-in-2019-confirmed-to-be-called-e-plus-127125.html JAGUAR LAND ROVER HAS PARTNERED WITH PLUGSURFING "Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with Plugsurfing to supply a premium charging service for its electric vehicles in selected markets in Europe. Drivers choosing an all-electric Jaguar I-PACE performance SUV will be given free access to the Jaguar Public Charging app, whilst Range Rover or Range Rover Sport plug-in petrol-electric hybrid (PHEV) customers can download the Land Rover Public Charging app for free. Both apps easily locate 70,000 charging points and pay for the charging session. Customers will also receive a universal charging card that allows them to use most charging points across Europe. Through the apps, Jaguar and Land Rover electric vehicle drivers can see whether a charging station is available or occupied. Drivers can choose to rapid charge before reaching their destination or charge at normal speed upon arrival." "There are two packages on offer - a fixed monthly fee or Pay As You Go. Each package, which includes the universal charging key and app download information, is available through the Jaguar and Land Rover retailer network. https://media.jaguarlandrover.com/news/2018/07/plugsurfing-puts-jaguar-and-land-rover-drivers-road-easier-charging PORSCHE TAYCAN: ORDERS FOR BRAND'S FIRST EV ALREADY BUILDING "Customers have begun ordering the Porsche Taycan, the firm’s first all-electric vehicle, despite the production version of the car not even being revealed yet, UK managing director Alexander Pollich has said." and according to Jim Holder writing for Autocar: "Order books opened earlier this month, with Pollich confirming that customers were keen to reserve early cars despite the car only being revealed as a concept - called Mission E. He did not confirm order numbers, however. The production car is expected to be revealed for the first time in 2019, ahead of hitting roads in 2020." "The Taycan sits on a new architecture, named J1 by Porsche. The brand's first EV will feature 800V charging technology that is intended to future-proof the car for several years after it hits the market, and company officials have already confirmed it is designed to enable fast-charging to 80% of the car’s range in just 15 minutes." TESLA HIRING SPREE IN JULY "Several months ago, Tesla went on a massive hiring spree as it geared up production, marketing, and customer touchpoints for accelerated deliveries of its more-affordable Model 3" according to Joshua Fruhlinger at thinknum.com: "Then the company let go of 9% of its workforce in an effort to make things a bit more efficient as it came under fire from all angles as it struggled to deliver cars. So it is with an equal mix of fascination and trepidation that we report that Tesla is embarking on another hiring spree. On July 1, 2018, the company listed 1,662 openings. As of yesterday, the company has 1,974 open positions. That's a jump of 19% in just over 2 weeks." Whereas layers of management seemed to be the focus of the previous reduction in workforce, these openings are sales or customer facing. 85 of the positions advertised are for Customer Experience Specialist. https://media.thinknum.com/articles/tesla-hiring-activity-jumped-19-since-july-1/ MODEL 3 DUAL MOTOR AND PERFORMANCE VERSIONS ARE NOW EPA-RATED On Monday of this week the Model 3 Performance and Dual Motor, or P3 and P3D if you like, were officially rated by the EPA which opens the door for those cars to be delivered. Fred Lambert at Electrek says: "The EPA has now confirmed that both the Performance and non-Performance Dual Motor versions have a 116-MPGe rating with 120 MPGe for city driving and 112 MPGe for highway driving. As for the range, they both get officially rated at 310 miles on a single charge, like the Long Range rear-wheel-drive version, but the dual motor Model 3 vehicles officially have an efficiency of 29 kWh per 100 miles versus 26 kWh per 100 miles for the single motor version." https://electrek.co/2018/07/17/tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-versions-official-epa-ratings/ COMMUNITY YouTube comments You can listen to all previous 183 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. It’s Thursday 31st May 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. TESLA MODEL 3 WINS CONSUMER REPORTS BLESSING AFTER BRAKE FIX Getting a B+ in a school test is not the end of the world, but what if your teacher allowed you to come back a week later and fix up that one question you got wrong, and give you an A+ with flying colours? That's pretty much the last week in the world of Consumer Reports and Tesla. They say: "Consumer Reports now recommends the Tesla Model 3, after our testers found a recent over-the-air update improved the car's braking distance by nearly 20 feet. In an email to CR, a Tesla spokeswoman said that the company improved the software for the Model 3's antilock braking system to adapt to variations in how the brakes might be used and to respond to different environmental conditions. The improved braking distances raised the Model 3’s Overall Score enough for the car to be recommended by CR, but our testers had other areas of concern as well. They found issues with the Model 3’s wind noise, stiff ride, and uncomfortable rear seat. Last week, Musk told CR in a conversation that the automaker has already made changes to its production line to address those three issues. One of the most experienced of Tesla writers, Dana Hull, for Bloomberg: "Tesla's Model 3 sedan won a coveted recommendation from Consumer Reports after an over-the-air software update improved braking by almost 20 feet. The new software addressed variations in braking styles and environmental conditions, a company spokeswoman told Consumer Reports. Jake Fisher, director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, described the improvement as unprecedented. “I’ve been at CR for 19 years and tested more than 1,000 cars, and I’ve never seen a car that could improve its track performance with an over-the-air update,” he said in a statement. The updates are being rolled out now. Elon Musk tweeted: "“Improved windshield for aero noise & suspension for ride comfort are major ops. Unless you’re really bothered by them, don’t replace. Best way to improve ride is drop tire pressure to ~39 psi. 45 psi is best range, but lower comfort.” Electrek say: "The hardware update to the suspension has reportedly started rolling out in December and owners can have it retrofitted at a Tesla’s service center." https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/tesla-model-3-gets-cr-recommendation-after-braking-update/ https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-30/tesla-model-3-gets-consumer-reports-endorsement-after-brake-fix https://electrek.co/2018/05/30/tesla-model-3-stopping-distance-improvements-new-test-ui-ride-comfort-road-noise AUDI E-TRON EV GETS SIDE CAMERAS INSTEAD OF MIRRORS FOR AERODYNAMICS Wing mirrors are something I would put into the category of solved problems. A bit like sinks - they were a solved problem. Sinks works. Then fancypants hotels started installing sinks like flat slates with funky taps, and the next thing you know, it splashes everywhere and you've wet your crotch. Just me? OK. Now Autoblog says Audi is ditching mirrors for cameras on the forthcoming Audi e-tron Quattro. I presumed it would be one of those concept car things which never made it's way onto the car. "The optional cameras are mounted to little winglets where the standard side mirrors would have been. As for where you see the cameras' views, there will be an additional screen in the area to the left of the instrument cluster for at least the left camera. Audi wasn't totally clear about the screen for the right-hand camera." Back in 2016 Autonews were talking about this issue "cameras capture a wider angle of view and can see blind spots usually invisible with mirrors. They can also improve visibility by digitally compensating for glare, darkness or even rainy weather. The pathway to mirrorless cars was cleared late last year when the United Nations' World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations approved the use of cameras that meet certain specifications in place of mirrors." North America is expected to follow suit later in 2018 in allowing them. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/30/audi-e-tron-ev-side-cameras-replace-mirrors/ HYUNDAI SET TO ENTER BATTERY BUILDING BUSINESS According to Korean Media, Hyundai could be about to make their own EV batteries in an attempt to ease the bottlenecks which have slowed up sales, and they aim to reduce the dependency on LGChem and SK Innovation. Electrive say: "a Hyundai spokesperson confirmed they were working on battery production lines but denied any plans they would use them for their own electric vehicles." https://www.electrive.com/2018/05/30/hyundai-to-produce-its-own-electric-car-batteries/ 2019 HYUNDAI IONIQ ADDS MORE ACTIVE-SAFETY EQUIPMENT Staying with Hyundai and "The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq range will receive a handful of technology updates for the new model year, with improvements in safety and infotainment. This is the third model year for the Ioniq Electric and Hybrid, though only the second year for the Plug-In Hybrid version." reports CNET. New for 2019: Driver Attention Alert and High Beam Assist safety features now available Enhanced, natural-language, server-based voice-recognition and POI-search database provided by HERE™ Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Smart Cruise Control added to SEL Standard remote charge management for Plug-in and Electric models via Blue Link® "The Ioniq Electric and Plug-In Hybrid will include remote monitoring of battery charging as standard from within the cars' associated Blue Link telematics smartphone apps. The 2019 versions of all three Ioniqs will be in dealerships this summer." But what about the battery range? I can't find anywhere online which says they will upgrade the current 28 kWh battery pack with 124 mile driving range. The move comes despite long-standing speculation in media reports that the Ioniq EV could receive a battery upgrade to boost its range to 200 miles or beyond. I'll post a link to the Hyundai Media Center on the show notes but key paragraphs are: " The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid provides an estimated all-electric range of 29 miles, 119 MPGe in EV mode and 52 MPG in hybrid mode, powered by a potent 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery." and… "The Ioniq Electric has an estimated 136 MPGe rating, the highest efficiency rating of any electric vehicle sold in the U.S. market. The Ioniq Electric offers pure electric mobility with a 28.0 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery for an estimated driving range of 124 miles." https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/2542 https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2019-hyundai-ioniq-adds-equipment/ SIGHTINGS OF FUTURE EVS "Ford's new Kuga SUV, set to arrive in showrooms in 2020, will be available as a plug-in hybrid for the first time." according to AutoExpress who have spy spots of the Plug In Hybrid version testing, in heavy camo, in North America. Although if you're listening to this in North America, this is the Ford Escape. Since the 2013 model year, the European designed Kuga has been rebadged as the Escape, and it's a popular car selling over 300,000 last year. "This new Kuga is still a few years away, however, as evidenced by the substantial camouflage hiding the new car's refreshed design. It’s likely that the next Kuga will share its platform with the new Focus, which has been designed with electrification in mind. As well as allowing Ford to develop petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric cars on the same platform it also means a slight increase in size is on the cards, as hinted at by the longer rear overhang and extended wheel arches of the prototypes." LeftLaneNews say: "Overall this prototype looks nearly identical to the one that was spotted back in April, but there is one major difference — look closely at the front fender and you'll see what looks like a fuel door. But Ford hasn't moved the Escape's gas tank to the front end, what you're looking at is actually a door to conceal a charge port." http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/ford/kuga/102952/ford-kuga-plug-in-hybrid-caught-on-camera https://www.leftlanenews.com/spied-2020-ford-escape-plug-in-hybrid-100611.html NISSAN HOME ENERGY SYSTEM LAUNCHES IN UK Dominik Wilde at Motor 1 has some great news for those in the UK wanting to add solar and storage, for a great price, from Nissan. "The new setup involves solar panels and reused batteries from the company's EVs, allowing homeowners to generate electricity even while they're not in the house and either sell it back to the grid at peak times or use it themselves. The whole thing is managed by a sophisticated computer system to best meet each household's requirements. "Starting from £3,881 – which includes the supply and installation of a six-panel solar system, home energy management system, and VAT at 5 percent – the package also uses battery storage (xStorage Home) as well as the solar panels and energy management to reduce energy bills by up to 66 percent. It also has the ability to charge Nissan EVs." He even urged customers not to buy FCA's Fiat 500e, its only battery-powered model, because he was losing money on each sold." https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/30/fiat-chrysler-sergio-marchionne-ev-electric-hybrid/ I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
