Lynne Hardin has always possessed an entrepreneur's spirit. After high school and college, her first job was working for Braniff International as an Airline Hostess.  Lynne volunteered for the Military Air Transport System (MATS), flying U.S. service personnel to various stations around the world during the Viet Nam conflict. She spent several years in the education and investment arena, working with the California Teachers Association. Lynne moved to Florida and established the Key West Tennis and Scuba Center; then consulted in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and St. Petersburg on land use. Lynne was recruited to Oklahoma City as the first Development Director for the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, raising over 35M for the school. Zedeka Poindexter and Gina Tranisi are co-executive directors of the Nebraska Writers Collective. NWC is responsible for the annual All Writes Reserved Youth Spoken Word Festival, formerly known as Louder Than a Bomb, which reaches more than 30 schools and 500 students across Nebraska and Iowa with free spoken word poetry lessons, workshops with local writers, open mics, and a space to be heard. NWC will also host National Youth Poet Laureate Stephanie Pacheco for a performance on Oct. 12 at Dry Spokes, located at 19th and Leavenworth. Zedeka Poindexter is a North Omaha-born writer and performer with a background in management and communications. She holds a bachelor's degree in communication from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Poindexter has built a historical record through poems and essays that draw on physical senses to connect with readers and listeners. Before assuming her current role, she spent ten years with the NWC as a teaching artist. Gina Tranisi is a leader, educator, and poet who has competed at both the National Poetry Slam and the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree in English with a specialization in Women's and Gender Studies from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. An alum of the Nebraska Writers Collective's youth poetry programming, Tranisi has served as a teaching artist and, most recently, an Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program certified instructor, and the organization's full-time program director. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris continue their coverage of the summer games extravaganza they lovingly refer to as Not E3! This time around, they have a crazy number of showcases to break down, including the Future of Play Direct, Women Led Games Show, Ubisoft Forward, and honestly way too many more. Vancouver record label Nerve Wracking Collections has just released their latest EP Coulrophobia, a collaborative concept project that includes Vancouver synthpunk bands, Phuture Memoriez and Jibbernaut. The concept involved choosing a theme and releasing a 4 song split EP with another band. This was an opportunity for NWC to expand and have many artists join their collective. Coulrophobia is the first split EP release derived from this project which revolves around the fear of clowns. The guidelines were kept simple so that each band could make their songs their own. They involved creating two new songs that followed the lyrical theme and a desire to release the EP along with a co-headline live show. Phuture Memoriez is a dark synth-pop-punk band from Vancouver BC and is composed of Marc Blaquiere and Jessica Blaquiere, while Jibbernaut consists of local punks “Gears” and “Hammer”. The songs on the EP are short, fast, visceral blasts that are rooted in early punk and hardcore and have elements of Kraut rock and foundational industrial music. Each track is an explosion, an expression of internal turmoil and angst against discordant hooks and symphonic feedback. “Gears”, singer of Jibbernaut, reflected on the inception of the EP, “When Phuture Memoriez approached us about the Coulrophobia project it appealed instantly. There's something inherently terrifying about clowns. The clown archetype has inhabited the cultural psyche for centuries and the idea of someone transformed into a painted/costumed character for the purpose of amusement holds within it the possibility for unfathomable darkness. We performed a week-long ceremony in our Vancouver compound as preparation for writing these two songs. After those seven days of fasting and sacrificial offerings our namesake, the demon Jibbernaut, appeared holding the pale severed head of a clown in its claws. We got to work immediately in a frenzied state of inspiration and 48 hours later we had “Clown School” and “No One's Laughing Now”. Matt has been running for over a decade and was an accomplished Division III runner as the 2012 NWC 10,000m champion. Matt's love for running led him to specialize in treating runners of all ages and abilities. He is also the founder of Doctors of Running, which provides detailed running shoe reviews. We give our usual caveats about how we plan to preview each region before previewing the West. In order: ASC (at 3:33) It may finally be East Texas Baptist's time to shine -- they look loaded UT-Dallas has a lot to replace on offense but we still trust this program to be good Mary Hardin-Baylor has impressive pitching depth but will need some bats to step up Adios, Belhaven -- keep an eye on Hardin-Simmons  SCAC (at 17:05) Trinity (TX) has some huge bats to replace but should still rake while the pitching remains a question mark Texas Lutheran has a strong offensive core returning even if their best player from 2022 is gone Centenary (LA) has an excellent top of the rotation but will need to find some more thump on offense Shoutout Southwestern (TX) and St. Thomas (who came to D-III instead of leaving it like the MN school smh smh) SCIAC (at 28:37) Chapman's pitching should be elite again and have some ultra-exciting young hitters Pomona-Pitzer is trending up in a huge way and could have one of the best offenses in the country Cal Lutheran has a solid returning lineup but some questions on the mound We can always count on La Verne to compete NWC (at 42:00) Pacific (OR) has most of their main dudes back for what looks like another potential postseason run  If Pacific Lutheran had posted their roster by the time we recorded this we'd feel a lot better about how good they were going to be Every other team in this conference could realistically make some noise; look for Lewis & Clark to keep trending up and Whitman to bounce back We conclude (at 49:20) with our player and pitcher of the year picks, and our teams to beat. Michael Canfield Lucky Star Horsemanship I met Michael Canfield while learning Clinton Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship Method. Before the podcast, when I was studying videos from Downunder Horsemanship, I joined the No Worries Club in 2007. Back then, the Club had various groups of NWC members around the country. We would get together and practice our horsemanship skills. Michael Canfield formed the NorCal Brumbies and we held several events practicing together. We had a few grand adventures at the Bar SZ Ranch working our horses together. Michael and I stayed friends although we lost contact when he moved to the east coast. We still connect on social media and I noticed Michael re-activated his Lucky Star Horsemanship (New York) company. Michael holds clinics, gives demonstrations at horse expos like Equine Affaire, and even hosts his own horse expo. It's fun and inspirational to see Michael Canfield pursue his passion for horses and teaching people. We talked about his history with horses and his horsemanship philosophy. along the way we hear stories that formed Michael's approach to horses.
