A finales de junio Rockstar confirmó que el esperado Grand Theft Auto VI llegará el 19 de noviembre, pero sin edición en soporte físico. El estuche que pondrán a disposición de los compradores contendrá solo un código de descarga. Unos días después Sony anunció que dejará de fabricar discos para los videojuegos a partir de 2028, señal inequívoca de que la próxima PlayStation prescindirá del lector óptico en su versión de entrada. Lo cierto es que cada vez se compran menos videojuegos en formato físico. En Estados Unidos los videojuegos en soporte de plástico (discos y cartuchos) facturaron casi 12.000 millones de dólares en 2008, el año pasado solo 1.500 millones, una caída del 90% en 17 años. En España el mercado del videojuego físico cerró 2024 con una caída en las ventas del 18% mientras la venta digital crecía casi un 20%. El sector no pierde dinero, simplemente está adaptándose a los gustos del consumidor. En 2025 el gasto total en videojuegos superó los 60.700 millones y en ecosistemas como el de PlayStation casi del 85% de las ventas ya son digitales. Nada de esto ha ocurrido de un día para otro. Sony, Nintendo y Microsoft llevan unos 20 años promocionando sus tiendas en línea, algo que implicaba dotar a las consolas de conexión a internet y capacidad de almacenamiento propia, eso se hizo con las consolas de séptima generación. La PlayStation 3 abrió el camino en 2006 con la PlayStation Network, ese mismo año Nintendo abrió su Wii Shop Channel, Microsoft lo había hecho con Xbox Live Arcade en 2004, que tuvo su evolución con Games on Demand en 2009. El avance fue tan lento que casi nadie recuerda cuándo dejó de comprar juegos en las tiendas para bajarlos directamente a la consola. En esto de la digitalización la música fue el paciente cero. La iTunes Store popularizó el pago por canción hace casi 25 años y allanó el camino a Spotify o Apple Music, hasta el punto de que hoy casi nadie compra discos compactos y el vinilo sobrevive solo como objeto de culto. El cine siguió por el mismo camino, del VHS al DVD y al Blu-ray, hasta que las plataformas trajeron las suscripciones, un pago mensual que da acceso a un catálogo muy amplio de películas y series. Los libros, que también tienen versiones digitales, son la excepción, porque ahí el papel sigue siendo el soporte principal. El libro impreso es su propia tecnología, no necesita batería ni actualizaciones y ha superado la prueba del tiempo. La industria editorial trabaja con los dos formatos y todo indica que seguirá siendo así. Detrás de este cambio han operado varias fuerzas. Por un lado la tecnología hizo posible la descarga rápida y el almacenamiento, por otro las descargas permiten ganar más dinero a los estudios y controlar mejor las copias, Rockstar, por ejemplo, se ahorra el 30% que cedía a la tienda y el 5% de la fabricación del disco. Por último, el consumidor parece encantado con la inmediatez de disponer del contenido en el acto. El precio de esa comodidad es la propiedad. Quien descarga no compra un objeto sino una licencia personal e intransferible, atada a una cuenta y sujeta a un contrato de usuario final. No puede revender ni prestar, y su acceso depende de que la plataforma siga existiendo. El plástico se despide sin que la mayoría lo eche de menos y quedará, como el vinilo, para quien quiera disponer de una copia física a la que le de un valor más sentimental que práctico.
