Ashley Cullins and David Lubin are out with new books that delve into the histories of iconic films. First, in 1996, the character Ghostface was introduced to audiences in the first Scream movie. Cullins has written a history of these films–which are still being made–called Your Favorite Scary Movie. In today's episode, she joins NPR's Ayesha Rascoe to talk about the franchise. Then, this year marks the 75th anniversary of Sunset Boulevard – and Lubin has written an anatomy of the film called Ready for My Close-Up. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's Ailsa Chang about genre-jumping, comeback narratives, and elements of the film that still feel current. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Dan, Manny, & Billy are joined by friend of the show, writer, & sole audience member Eric Althoff to dive into a whole bunch of nostalgic pop culture news and put it to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “No artist loved their fans more than [Ozzy] did” -Billy In this episode of Nostalgia Test News, recorded on August 19th, 2025, the boys get straight to it and with the rebooted Scary Movie, if there's a need for a Rambo prequel, and what could Gremlins 3 possibly be about? Doesn't everyone know about the rules after Gremlins 2? The boys are joined by Eric Althoff from the Street Fighter episode who just so happened to be in the Zoom audience. He weighs in on the age-old question, is Gremlins 2 better than Gremlins 1? The episode takes a crazy turn down a huge AI tangent, creepy celebrity stories from the set of Crush and Freaky Friday, driverless cars and delivery robots in LA, F**k Dean Cain, and did you know there was a 12-year-old kid with no legs in the ET puppet? Everyone reflects on the passing of Ozzy Osborne and Malcolm Jamal Warner and talk about their contributions to music, TV, creating the Reality TV, genre, poetry, and more. They also tackle the controversial legacy of Hulk Hogan after his passing. And last but not least (haha) they touch on Megadeath calling it quits and how Dave Mustaine is the most bitter musician in metal despite being extremely successful. All this and so much more! Join us for a 25th-anniversary deep-dive into Scary Movie, the genre-blending parody that kicked off a beloved franchise. We break down how Keenen Ivory Wayans and his collaborators, including Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, along with a stellar ensemble cast that includes Jon Abrahams, Carmen Electra, Shannon Elizabeth, Anna Faris, Kurt Fuller, Regina Hall, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, and Dave Sheridan, stitched together a wink-and-a-nod homage to horror films while carving out its own outrageous voice. From its send-ups of Scream to its thunderous ensemble humor, we explore production notes, casting dynamics, cultural impact, and the legacy this comedy left on the horror genre as it was evolving into something exciting and new. Joining in for this discussion is none other than Mark J. Parker of the Release Date Rewind Podcast, who is more than ready to dive into this horror parody that continues to resonate 25 years later. In this week's episode, Jef, Josh and Brian are so happy to be back at the movie theater watching a brand new horror flick! The FM3 sit down for Michael Shanks "Together" starring Alison Brie and her real life husband Dave Franco. Hopes were high and little was known about this project for The Forever Midnight Crew. The convo after viewing got a little hot in a few spots, tempers were raging and the lack of dong shots dominated some of the chat but that's how it goes when talking about Body Horror in a post The Substance world. (There was an audio issue in this ep with one of the mics, apologies). Thank you for listening!

On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch, Alyssa Rosenberg, and Peter Suderman discussed how to best respond to South Park's war on the Trump Administration and its cronies. Then they reviewed Weapons, the funniest scary movie of the year (so far!) that nevertheless has a poignant, melancholic core. Our exit today has us fighting ghosts and trying to get a date to another prom. This week, we are looking at two spoofs that attempt to satirize two genres that were very big at the time. First, we are going to talk about Scary Movie 2, written by Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Alyson Fouse, Greg Grabianski, Dave Polsky, Michael Anthony Snowden, and Craig Wayans and directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. Next, we are going to talk about Not Another Teen Movie, written by Mike Bender, Adam Jay Epstein, Andrew Jacobson, Phil Beauman and Buddy Johnson and directed by Joel Gallen. Both films employ a plethora of writers to try and craft sharp parodies or spoofs. But do more writers mean more laughs?Along the way, we discuss Tim Burton, She's All That, David Letterman, Tim Curry, Vanilla Sky, many teen actors, the emergence of Chris Evans, Natasha Lyonne, Marlon Brando, and why one of these movies works so much better than the other!Thememusic by Jonworthymusic.Powered by RiversideFM.CFF Films with Ross and friends.Movies We've Covered on the Show on Letterboxd.Movies Recommended on the Show on Letterboxd.

You know the name and the family but you've never heard Marlon Wayans like this. In a deeply personal and hilarious conversation, he opens up about grieving his parents, parenting a trans son, and how both experiences brought him to a place of radical love and acceptance. He spills on Scary Movie 6, his chilling new horror film HIM, and what it's really like being the youngest Wayans. Plus: a full-blown roast of his brothers, a gift exchange, and a wild round of One's Gotta Go. Buckle up. Jason Fraley celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Wayans Brothers' hilarious spoof “Scary Movie,” which opened in July 2000, while this October will mark the 25th anniversary of the chilling drama "Requiem for a Dream." He discussed both movies with Marlon Wayans back in 2017 when he called in to promote his Netflix original comedy “Naked” and his NBC sitcom “Marlon.” (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
Wow! This movie was bad. Has it been 28 years since the original I Know What You Did Last Summer? Well, the movie I thought was going to be the hit of the summer turns out to be a giant stinker filler with unlikable characters, dumb dialogue (even for slashers) and dumber situations. The whole Summer is a mess of a movie and although I hate talking bad about movies, it's impossible with this one.If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

Thankfully the crew has some truly wonderful Patrons over on Patreon that throw them some picks out of left field and for that the guys at FM salute you! You too can join the fun by streaming "Evil Dead Trap" now on Plex, Screambox, Prime Video, AMC+ and Fandor!
In this episode, Brian thought it would be fun to hike out into the wilderness for some summer slasher action and picked "The Prey" from 1983. Slashering was slightly highlighted in this budget flick but not as much as all the crazy critters thrown in to pad the run time. This movie is part Temu Friday the 13th, part Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with just a tiny sprinkle of the Addams Family. The perfect recipe to leave you plopped down criss cross applesauce right in the campfire! Streaming now on TUBI!
