Lew ApolloTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Minnesota / Austin musician Lew Apollo. In this episode, Lew and I chat about his growing up in Minnesota, and what made him decide to move to Austin, Texas. Naturally, I ask him about his tattoos, and what they mean. Then we move onto a good ol' Texas burger slap fight! Lew and I go round and round, /1/4 pound for 1/4 pound about who has the best fast-food burger in South Texas; Whataburger or P. Terry's. Then we get into his music. Lew's new debut album is called Fool's Gold, and is a 9-track journey through heartache, acceptance, and finally contentment. We discuss a few of the tracks individually, and he even lets me play his most talked about song from this record. Lew does talk about learning from and being mentored by Austin local legend Blk Odyssy. We touch a bit on Lew's previous E.P. called Jungle, and what that title means to him. Sadly, we do discuss some rough subject matter related to his father's passing, and how this tragedy reframed the feeling and meaning of some of the songs he wrote before the event. Lew Apollo has a unique, original sound, and I can't stop playing his music in my house! Special shout out to Victor Gaspar, Orb Studios, and Rey Roldan at Rey Bee Publicity.

EPISODE 137: Embracing a broad range of musical styles, British singer-songwriter Tasmin Archer's soulfully silky voice has graced a strong catalogue of songs with an eclectic mix of themes since the 1990s. Three further singles from the album were top 30 hits in the UK. She received a Brit award in 1993 and was nominated in two further categories the same year.       This is Michael Clem's Episode!   The Myth, the Magic, The Mysterious! 25% of eddie from ohio, 100% wit, grit, & spit!  So Here we are, back together again.  It's been a long time since we've hung out, so it's good to see you! I give a little update at the top of the episode, but suffice it to say, it's good be back after a long hiatus! Michael Clem is on the show today, with a conversation we had oh, about a year ago (still moving forward, ya'll, just not too swiftly). Mike is a smart, witty, hilarious, thoughtful and supersweet guy who is always up for a good stroll along a mountain path, which is by coincidence the very thing we did! I first knew Mike from eddie from ohio, a folk rock band I fell in love with in the 90s and followed steadily until they hung it up just a few years ago. It was cool to get to know him over the years as a colleague and a friend, and was so excited when he agreed to do this podcast.   You might remember I interviewed former bandmate, Robbie Schaefer, back in 2019, and we get to finally hear Mike's side of the story, as well as lots of great nuggets about life, house shows, songwriting classes and Tchaikovsky. Mike can be found at michaelclem.com, as well as his YouTube Channel, where you can find a video of Mike performing a song we chatted briefly about, Philmore Hall, from his 50 Clementines album, featuring the absolute perfect choice for a trumpet soloist you could find for this great song! A coach who builds tougher teams with softer hands. A singer who swapped liquid courage for real conviction. A Hawaii-born artist designing a sound that can live anywhere. That mix is Mahina—grounded, generous, and ready for the world. We dive into her journey from playing shortstop and coaching high school softball to writing radio-ready songs that people can't stop singing. She explains how standards changed since her playing days and why positive discipline, respect, and real-life accountability help young athletes grow into strong people. Then we trace her creative arc—from recording vocals in a bathroom with GarageBand to building a collaboration-first workflow with manager Romeo Valientine and producer Mad Mat, shaping hooks that travel and verses that feel true. The origin of “Stay With Me,” her DM to Tehani, and the leap from backyard studios to polished mixes show how persistence and community can turn a good idea into a charting single.Faith and sobriety now sit at the center of her life. Mahina talks candidly about letting go of alcohol, shedding stage nerves, and trusting God to lead rather than bargaining for outcomes. That surrender changed her performances, clarified her choices, and fed her writing. The new single leans into betrayal and comes out brighter—pain reframed as fuel, a chorus that's easy to carry, and verses that move from crying in the shower to laughing in the mirror. Call it “Mahina World”: a blend of R&B, pop, and island reggae that nods to old-school soul while reaching for global playlists. Offstage, she draws on years as a caregiver, where listening, patience, and presence became second nature—and where empathy turned work into family. There's more on the way: a 10-track album slated for next year, singles rolling out ahead of release, dream collabs, and shows where she'll tease a few unreleased cuts. Until then, you'll find her coaching, writing in notebooks, posting more consistently, and remembering why she started—to make music people feel and to help her community shine. If this story moved you, follow and subscribe, share the episode with a friend who needs the lift, and leave a quick review so more listeners can discover Mahina's voice.

It was this mountaintop and then the valley. The book is about the valley. And . . . each time I went down in the valley it was painful because there were things in this book that I wanted to forget in life but what created the real substance of me was I had to face my insecurities.”

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2022 conversation with Roland Orzabal. ABOUT ROLAND ORZABAL AND TEARS FOR FEARS:Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith formed Tears for Fears in Bath, England, in 1981 and have gone on to sell 30 million albums worldwide. Their major breakthrough in the UK came in 1982 with the Top 5 single “Mad World” and the subsequent platinum-selling album The Hurting. They gained major steam in the US with their sophomore album Songs From the Big Chair, which included the hit singles “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” and “Head Over Heels.” Featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Songs From the Big Chair reached #1 and was certified five times Platinum by the RIAA. Tears for Fears' follow-up single “Sowing the Seeds of Love” was another massive hit, but Curt departed the group not long after. Following a couple of albums with Orzabal at the helm, the duo reunited for the Everybody Loves a Happy Ending album in 2004. Now, after a long wait of 17 years, Roland and Curt have just released their seventh studio album The Tipping Point, and are embarking on a major tour. Even as they bring us new music, their legacy is well-established as one of the most unique and influential British groups to emerge in the last few decades. Their songs have been covered or sampled by Gary Jules, Adam Lambert, Lorde, Kanye West, Drake, and many others. And, in 2021, the band was honored with the Outstanding Song Collection honor at the Ivor Novello Awards in London.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. https://www.drewparkermusic.com It takes some folks 10 years to make a name for themselves in Music City, but in the three short years that Drew Parker has lived in Nashville, TN, he has been able to accomplish things he never dreamed were possible.Coming from a small, unincorporated town of Stewart, Georgia (located in Covington, Georgia), Parker began singing at age 3 in front of small church crowds. Over the years, he began to build his confidence and, at age 14, he decided to pick up a guitar and teach himself how to play songs from his inspirations, such as Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, and Alan Jackson. At age 18, he expanded his musical abilities and learned to play piano, both of which he still uses today to craft lyrics and rhymes into songs. Parker made the move to Nashville, Tennessee in 2015 and signed a publishing deal with RiverHouse/WarnerChappell in September of 2017. He is a co-writer on Luke Combs' debut platinum record “This Ones For You”, Jake Owen's single “Homemade” and Luke Combs' “1,2 Many”. Aside from his cowboy hat and boots, Drew Parker is the definition of true country. He is genuine, honest, and carries an old soul that resonates with many. He is on the rise and sees no end in sight. MUSICLYRICAL WORD-SMITHING IS A COMMODITY HOW MET LUKE COMBS?OLD SCHOOL ARTISTS YOU ADMIRED MOST? It is a privilege to welcome alt-pop recording artist and producer ROHAN to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  ROHAN was an Australian kid with big dreams. Indian parents raised him in Australia and Singapore. He was introduced to music through Australian Idol and Green Day's American Idiot, which led him to explore computers and front bands in Melbourne and Singapore.  After high school, he moved to California and attended Stanford to continue exploring his love for technology and music. Now, out of his own studio in San Francisco and pulling inspiration from Australian recording artists such as Skeggs, 90s R&B and hip-hop such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, and contemporary pop artists like Dominic Fike, he's ready to officially introduce himself with his own blend of Australian indie rock with R&B, electronic, and folk musical influences that form his self-produced confessional alt-pop anthems.  Earlier in 2025, ROHAN opened for Chappell Roan's favorite pop artist, Devon Again, at her sold-out show in San Francisco. He also opened for Contradash, Frex, and Marco Luka.  In October, he will be supporting Will Paquin when he visits the city.  On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, ROHAN spoke about performing alongside Green Day, overcoming challenges while staying in the music industry, and shared the stories behind some of his most-streamed Spotify songs.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Red Steagall has sung the praises of cowboys and the ranching way of life for decades. As a musician, songwriter, cowboy poet and radio and television personality, his pursuits as an entertainer consistently shine the spotlight on America's Western heritage. He is the official Cowboy Poet of Texas, hosts the TV show “Somewhere West of Wall Street,” and continues to perform his Western music across the country. His passion for preserving the Western lifestyle can be seen in the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering, his new book, Texas Red, and the soon-to-be-built Red Steagall Institute for Traditional Western Arts. For many years he joined the cowboy crews of the Four Sixes Ranch and the JA Ranch during spring works, which continued to inspire his poetry and songwriting. Here, he shares his story, which reveals the same type of perseverance, determination and work ethic that have shaped the American West. Jeff Tweedy is best known as the front man of Wilco, the rock band he formed in Chicago in 1994. In recent years, he's been working more often as a solo artist, putting out records under his own name as well as a memoir and essays on songwriting. Amanda Petrusich sat down with the singer-songwriter to talk about “Twilight Override,” which comes out later this month. Recorded with Tweedy's two sons and a number of his fellow Chicago-based musicians, “Twilight Override” is a triple album of songs centered on themes of time, aging, fear, and “making peace with something ending.” “If we're looking at the word override, what am I overriding?” Tweedy says. “I mean, twilight's beautiful . . . but you need to override your fear of it.” Tweedy performs acoustic versions of “Love Is for Love,” “Lou Reed Was My Babysitter,” and “Forever Never Ends.”

The songwriter was unconscious, but his voice filled the operating room. Mike Frazier's dirty-blond locks had been partially shaved and his head sanitized. The surgeon standing over him slid his blade in a crescent over Frazier's right ear and tugged his scalp into position. Then he began opening a window into the musician's brain. The task that day was to reach and remove the cause of the grievous pain that had besieged and mystified Frazier for years. After almost a decade as a folk-rock singer with a rollicking vibe and a knack for storytelling, piercing stomach pain had stymied his songwriting and drawn him into a dangerous depression before he turned 30.This story explores Frazier's condition, diagnosis and recovery through the songs he would write about the experience. Michael Laris reported, wrote and narrated the piece. Bishop Sand composed music and produced audio.Subscribe to The Washington Post here.
