EPISODE 145: Rob Arthur is a musician, filmmaker and watercolorist. He's currently the bandleader for the Peter Frampton Band. His new (and first) foray into filmmaking has riled the new documentary "FRAMPTON". From the explosive heights of Frampton Comes Alive! to the quiet introspection of his final tour, "Frampton" is an intimate portrait of a rock icon who soared, stumbled, and rose again. This feature documentary traces Peter Frampton's extraordinary life and career — from his meteoric rise in the 1970s that made him a global sensation, through the turbulent years that tested his artistry, identity, and resilience. As the roar of stadium crowds faded, Frampton faced the daunting task of rebuilding — reinventing his sound and rediscovering his purpose across solo projects, collaborations, and relentless touring. Behind the stage lights, personal sacrifices and fractured family ties reveal the cost of fame that few ever see. Now, diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis, a degenerative muscle condition threatening his ability to play guitar, Frampton stands at a profound crossroads. framptonfilm.comContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

Rising hip hop influencer Cameron McCloud lets us in on his journey and his processPART ONE: Paul and Scott chat about a song that's getting a lot of hate online and consider how the internet has redefined how we hear music. PART TWO: Our in-depth conversation with Cameron McCloudABOUT CAMERON McCLOUD Cure for Paranoia is the Dallas-based alternative hip hop collective fronted by Cameron McCloud. Crowned "Rap Group of the Year" by the Dallas Entertainment Awards in 2025 and "Artist of the Year" in 2026, the group's name came about following McCloud's diagnosis with bipolar depression and paranoid schizophrenia. Their breakthrough came when Erykah Badu's tapped them to perform at her birthday bash, and they have since shared bills with such artists as George Clinton, Nas, Ludacris, and Leon Bridges. The group was named NPR Tiny Desk Contest finalists three times in 2023, 2024, and 2025 before winning the contest in 2026. In addition to the success of their most recent EP, Work of Art, they've gained attention online thanks to Cameron's 2025 challenge to release an original verse every day on his social media channels. Tackling everything from mental health to social injustice, his rhymes earned a substantial following. Inspired by groups such as Outkast, The Roots, and a Tribe Called Quest, Cameron McCloud and Cure for Paranoia are rapidly gaining a major national audience. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Feeling stuck creatively? Struggling with songwriter's block, creative burnout, or feeling disconnected from your music? In this episode, we're talking about how to begin again creatively — not through pressure, perfectionism, or forcing inspiration, but through play, curiosity, experimentation, and reconnecting with the desire to create. I share some honest reflections about my own creative process lately, the idea of creating a tiny summer creative project, and why songwriter's block may not actually mean your creativity is gone. Maybe the flow is still there — just buried underneath fear, overthinking, comparison, burnout, or the pressure to make something “good.” We'll talk about: songwriter's block and creative burnout how to start writing songs again reconnecting with your songwriting practice overcoming perfectionism in creativity why play and experimentation matter creating without pressure tiny creative projects as a doorway back into flow how to rekindle your desire to create This episode is for singer-songwriters, musicians, artists, and creatives who want to reconnect with their artistic voice and begin creating again from a place that feels alive. Plus, I'll guide you through a reflective exercise to help you imagine your own small creative project for this summer.

Lauren LucasTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Lauren Lucas. Lauren is a singer songwriter originally from South Carolina, and currently living in Nashville, Tn. In this episode, we chat about her growing up in South Carolina and making the move to Nashville. We also discuss the craziness of her being signed to a publishing deal as a teenager; having never written a song! She shares some of her inspirations, and some of the amazing artists that she has opened for on regional and national tours. I ask her why she decided to attend Belmont University, and how she ended up teaching songwriting at that same school. We briefly talk about some of the bands and acts that she has been part of, or associated with. Naturally we do a deep dive into songwriting and the importance of learning to co-write. Lauren graciously lets me play one of my favorite older songs of hers, and then later on I get to play her newest release! Finally, we get into how she came to be part of the writing team that composes all of the music and interstitials for the Netflix sitcom Leanne. (The voice you hear sing the theme is Lauren's). If you have a chance, check out Lauren's podcast 'The Happiest Hour Podcast', available wherever you get your podcasts.

Grammy nominated songwriter Pynk Beard (aka Sebastian Kole) chats about his extensive work as a behind-the-scenes pop creator and gives us insight into his latest country-flavored album project. PART ONE Scott and Paul chat about their recent travels and how they find ways to make music tourism a part of any trip. PART TWO Our in-depth conversation with Pynk BeardABOUT PYNK BEARD: Pynk Beard is the artistic persona of Alabama-born Coleridge Tillman, who has already made a splash as a successful songwriter under the name Sebastian Kole. Growing up as a preacher's son in Birmingham Alabama, Pynk Beard's big break came when he contributed to “Goin' In,” which was recorded by Jennifer Lopez, featuring Flo Rida. He then signed with Motown Records as an artist and began collaborating as a writer and producer with Alessia Cara. He worked on most every track on her debut album Know-It-All, including the top 10 and multi-platinum pop hits “Here” and “Scars to Your Beautiful.” Soon after, he released his debut album as Sebastian Kole, a gospel and R&B influenced project called Soup. He continued working as a behind-the-scenes writer on songs such as “Bridges” by Fifth Harmony, “Freedom Rings” by Brandy, “Actions” by John Legend, “Time Machine” by Alicia Keys, and “Angel” by Halle Bailey, which found him collaborating with producer Neff-U and earning a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song. His debut EP as Pynk Beard is Red Dirt Diaries, which was released in October of 2025 on Red Bull Records. A country project that embraces elements of gospel, R&B and hip hop, it's a bold new artistic direction that has quickly gained attention from fans of multiple genres. Morgan Nagler writes new songs every day, whether she's in a room with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and HAIM, or by herself playing an acoustic guitar in her bedroom. When she's collaborating with other artists, there's a lot of thought put into what each song is supposed to be about. But in private, Nagler refers to her tried and true “puke method”, eager to see what emerges, unfiltered. Then perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that her debut album, which was born after a series of side projects, carries an intimate, conversational tone. Despite the layered electric guitar textures and thoroughly arranged instrumentals, Nagler sings as though she's right there, sitting next to you. In her co-write sessions with other artists, she “shows up and there's nothing, but by the end of the day, you've got a song with a nice demo recorded. And then, you can just wipe your hands of it.” Such is the privilege of a songwriter stepping into another artist's universe. In her own universe though, Nagler assesses all her heartbreaks and existential crises, summing it all up with an appropriate album title: I've Got Nothing to Lose, and I'm Losing It In the making of her album, Nagler had “the time of her life”, having so many of her collaborators show up for her passion project. But for this edition of Soundcheck, she's accompanied by nothing but her own guitar, putting her story in front and center. (- Sırma Munyar) Setlist: 1. Cradle the Pain 2. Hurt 3. Heartbreak City

Today's guest lives at the intersection of craft, sound, and story. If you've ever wondered what happens when making the instrument becomes part of the art — and when music leads before meaning — this conversation will invite you to slow down, listen deeply, and sit inside the mystery.Martin Maudal is a renowned luthier, songwriter, and producer, and a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Raised in Claremont, California at the foot of Mount Baldy, and shaped by years in the New York music scene, Martin blends West Coast soul with East Coast grit.He is the founder of Maudal Musical Machines, where he hand-builds electric resonator guitars—functional sculptures and vessels of sound that he also performs and records with. What began as a way to showcase these instruments evolved into Baldy Crawlers, a deeply expressive musical collective blending Folk, Americana, Jazz, and social commentary.Martin on YouTube@maudalmusicalmachines on InstagramMartin's Facebook pageFollowing critical acclaim for “Bring Me a Flower,” Baldy Crawlers return with the haunting new single Boy, released January 9, 2026—an intuitive, open-ended work that invites listeners not to solve the song, but to sit inside it.1) When Craft Becomes the MuseMartin, Baldy Crawlers began as a way to showcase your handmade guitars—and then became something much bigger. At what point did you realize this wasn't just a marketing project, but a true artistic calling of its own?2) Music Before MeaningYour new single “Boy” started not with a concept, but with a feeling. You've said, “This one was music before it was words.” What happens creatively when you let sound lead before meaning—and how do you know when not to force interpretation?3) Instruments as StorytellersYou build the very instruments you record and perform with. How does handcrafting a guitar—its materials, weight, resonance—shape the stories that come out of it? In what ways does the instrument itself become a collaborator?4) Leaving Space for Mystery“Boy” lives in a dreamlike space where silence speaks as loudly as sound. In a world that pushes clarity, content, and explanation, how do you protect ambiguity—and why do you think listeners crave that space now?5) Empathy, Myth, and the Human PulseFrom “Bring Me a Flower” to “Boy,” Baldy Crawlers' music feels rooted in empathy and shared humanity. What themes keep returning in your work—and what do you hope listeners discover about themselves when they sit with these songs?“Before we wrap up, Martin, where can listeners explore Baldy Crawlers' music, your instruments at Maudal Musical Machines, and keep up with upcoming releases?”For creatives listening who feel pressure to explain, optimize, or over-define their work—what would you say about trusting intuition and letting the art reveal itself in its own time?Music tracks are copyrighted, provided by the artist, and used with permission."Bedlam""Boy""Bring Me A Flower""Orbelin"
