This is a tribute to Bert Kaempfert, German orchestra leader and songwriter who was responsible for some of the biggest and most important songs of the pop era, including signature hits of Frank Sinatra and Wayne Newton. And he had a major impact on the career of the Beatles too.Kaemphert was born in Hamburg in 1923 and studied at the Hamburg School of Music. He formed an orchestra and had his first hit in 1960 with “Wonderland By Night”, which turned him and the orchestra into international stars. In 1961 he launched the recording career of the Beatles when he produced a song called “My Bonnie” for Tony Sheridan and hired the Beatles as the backing band. At the same session he recorded the Beatles first singles, “Ain't She Sweet” sung by John Lennon, and “Cry For A Shadow”, a song composed by John and George Harrison.Kaempfert composed the music to “Strangers In The Night” for Sinatra. Jimi Hendrix worked a bit of that song into his solo in “Wild Thing” at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. And Kaempfert wrote the music for the song “Danke Schoen”, which to this day is Wayne Newton's best known song.Kaempfert also wrote the music for the song “L-O-V-E” which was a hit for Nat King Cole, and “A Swingin Safari”, which became the theme song for “The Match Game” on TV. —----------------------------------------------------------- The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! Ralph McTell: English Folk Icon, Songwriter and Storyteller

Ralph McTell is one of Britain's most enduring and respected singer-songwriters, a master storyteller whose songs have become woven into the fabric of English folk music. Born in Kent and raised in Croydon, McTell developed an early love for American blues, folk and traditional British music. As a teenager he was captivated by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, influences that shaped both his fingerstyle guitar technique and his gift for narrative songwriting. After studying at art school in the early '60s, Ralph began busking and performing in London's thriving folk clubs, quickly building a reputation for his intricate guitar work and warm, conversational stage presence. He signed with a record company in the late '60s, releasing his self-titled debut album in '68. His breakthrough came in '69 with “Streets of London,” a song inspired by his travels in Paris and London, where he encountered loneliness and poverty firsthand. The song's gentle melody and compassionate lyrics struck a deep chord. Though it became a hit in the early '70s and was later re-released to even greater success, its impact went far beyond chart positions. It became one of the most covered songs in British music history, recorded by hundreds of artists worldwide and earning McTell the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for songwriting. Throughout the '70s, Ralph toured extensively releasing many albums. While “Streets of London” often overshadowed his broader catalogue, McTell consistently proved himself far more than a one-song artist. In the '80s, Ralph broadened his scope. He composed music for children's tv and wrote songs for stage productions. His collaborations included projects with fellow folk legend Wizz Jones and work alongside various orchestras.A defining characteristic of Ralph McTell's career has been his longevity and consistency. Rather than chasing trends, he has remained devoted to craftsmanship. In the 2000s and beyond, McTell continued to record and tour, releasing albums that revisited his influences and explored new material. He has also been honoured for his contributions to music, including receiving an OBE in 2010 for services to folk music.Today, Ralph McTell stands as a cornerstone of British folk songwriting. His legacy rests not only on a single iconic anthem, but on decades of carefully crafted songs that chronicle ordinary lives with empathy and grace. With his distinctive fingerpicking style, warm tenor voice and unflinching eye for human stories, McTell has carved out a body of work that continues to resonate across generations.More than half a century after he first stepped onto the folk club stage, Ralph McTell remains what he has always been: a storyteller with a guitar, shining a quiet light on the corners of life others might overlook.

In this episode of Americana Podcast: The 51st State, Robert Earl Keen sits down with Billy Strings to talk about learning to play, the craft of songwriting, and the evolving world of Americana music. Born William Apostol and raised in rural Michigan, Billy Strings grew up surrounded by bluegrass. By the time he was a teenager, his blistering flatpicking had already earned him a reputation as a prodigy among pickers and players. Years of relentless practice and countless small gigs eventually carried him from Midwestern bars and festivals to some of the biggest stages in roots music. For years, bluegrass lived mostly in whispers. You might hear it referenced in liner notes, spot it in a citation, or see it pop up in the occasional New Yorker cartoon. But something has changed. The conversation has gotten louder, and the reality is harder to ignore. Bluegrass music is considered cool now. It should not come as much of a surprise. Bluegrass has always carried a rich and vibrant history stretching back to the early twentieth century. It is a genre that holds tight to regional identity, creative freedom, and remarkable musicianship. At the same time, it has always fostered a deeply communal culture of learning, where songs, skills, and stories move naturally from one player to another. What the music needed was a new voice. New chapters. New songs added to the bluegrass canon. That is where Billy Strings comes in. Over the past several years, Billy has emerged as one of the most influential figures in modern bluegrass. His albums Home and Renewal helped push the genre into new territory while earning widespread acclaim, including multiple Grammy Awards, with Home winning Best Bluegrass Album. His live shows have developed a devoted following, blending traditional bluegrass musicianship with the improvisational spirit of jam bands and the storytelling roots of Americana. Billy Strings makes music that is rooted in bluegrass but stretches well beyond it. His songwriting reflects a deep understanding of the power of a well-crafted song. His lyrics move easily between personal reflection, observations about economic and ecological change, and the everyday questions that shape a life. All of it is supported by remarkable musicianship and production, where intricate playing and layered sonic details often create moments that feel almost like soundscapes. Trying to describe how good he is can be difficult. Some things are simply easier to hear than to explain. Listen to the full episode on all streaming platforms or at Americanapodcast.com. His ability to paint mental pictures has been compared to Raymond Carver, Flannery O'Connor, and even Norman Rockwell. His laid back, conversational singing style has been likened to Don Williams, Guy Clark, and John Denver. So, when the easy softness of this southern baritone delivers these lyrical short stories, it's no wonder that both his peers and journalists alike call Daryl Mosley a “songwriter's songwriter.”Daryl writes and sings about life as he knows it: small towns, rural churches, salt-of-the-earth people, family, and faith. He leans heavily on songs about the victories and challenges of everyday people because these are HIS people. For over three decades, the combination of these exquisitely crafted songs along with his understated delivery and gentle personality has been engaging music lovers in a way that few artists can. Mosley still resides in his hometown of Waverly, Tennessee - the small, Mayberry Esque hamlet just west of Nashville where he grew up. The experiences of life, work, faith, and love that resonate so strongly in this community are the very foundation of his songwriting. And when he sings those songs, the characters and scenes come alive as if they were sitting on the front porch with you. Music legends from Tom T. Hall and Ronnie Milsap to Bill Gaither and Rodney Crowell have praised both Mosley's singing prowess and his gifts as a songwriter. Mosley's songsmith abilities have led to him being honored four times as the industry's Songwriter of the Year, twenty #1 songs, and three Song of the Year awards. Other artists who have recorded his songs include - Lynn Anderson, Bobby Osborne, High Road, the Booth Brothers, and The Grascals. Songwriting legend Jerry Salley says Mosley is “easily one of the finest songwriters in our business.” Throughout the 1990s, Mosley toured as the lead vocalist with the much-celebrated Bluegrass group New Tradition. In 2001, he joined the legendary Osborne Brothers. In 2010, he formed the band The Farm Hands who quickly became one of the most awarded acts in Bluegrass. This marriage has taken him to the pinnacle of musical stages and venues ranging from the Grand Ole Opry to the legendary Bluebird Cafe to even West Point Military Academy. In 2020, Mosley stepped more directly into the spotlight with the release of his first solo project for Pinecastle Records -'The Secret of Life.' It was a collection of eleven songs written or co-written by Mosley that were both plain spoken and lyrically clever. The album reached #1 on the Roots Music Report as did the first single, “A Few Years Ago” and the spiritual “Do What The Good Book Says.” Critically acclaimed by both the media and industry peers, The Secret Of Life was praised by American Songwriter Magazine, SiriusXM, Bluegrass Today, Country Music People, Bluegrass Unlimited, MusicRow, Country Standard Time, No Depression, and more. The November 2021 release of Mosley's 'Small Town Dreamer' album featured a dozen original songs including three that reached the #1 spot on the charts; the nostalgic “Transistor Radio," the heart tugging “Mama's Bible” and the spiritual “He's With Me" that hit #1 on Cashbox Magazine's chart. In July of 2023, Daryl released his third solo album, 'A Life Well Lived.' The acclaimed album reached the top of the album charts as well as garnering three #1 songs: "Mayberry State of Mind" (along with the hit music video), as well as gospel chart toppers "The Bible in the Drawer" and "Big God". In 2024, Mosley released his current album, "Long Days & Short Stories."  The project is his fourth for Pinecastle Records and features the #1 songs "Me and Mr. Howard," "When the Good Old Days Were New," and "When I Can't Reach Up." Daryl Mosley remains a towering figure in roots music—crafting songs that feel both ancient and immediate, offering comfort and connection through his heartfelt stories and songs shaped by Southern tradition, Christian faith, and small‑town warmth.

Spanish indie folk artist Guitarricadelafuente has come a long way since his days of posting covers on social media. Back then, he wasn't only inspired by his own culture, but American folk music as well, reinterpreting songs of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Eventually finding his own vein within the art of storytelling, Guitarrica began drawing inspiration from folklore, viewing it as not a snapshot from the past, but “something that already lives within us”. In his two albums, La Cantera and Spanish Leather, this is the concept he embraces, embodying the curiosity and joy of a kid that lives in a village, discovering the city for the first time.  There is a delicate melancholy in the music of Guitarricadelafuente, but a celebration of love and laughter, too. His lens is an unfiltered one, embracing the reality of unadulterated human emotions and making peace with the poses he strikes daily. Fresh off the NPR Tiny Desk stage, he takes a short break from his first world tour to play a stripped-down set at the Soundcheck studios. (- Sırma Munyar) Setlist: 1.Poses 2. Mataleón 3. This episode of Unlocked is one I didn't know I needed. Contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Matthew West joins me and what starts with laughing about The Masked Singer somehow turns into one of the most honest conversations about faith, shame, marriage, and what it actually looks like to live what you preach. We talk about growing up with pressure around faith, feeling like all eyes are on you, and the danger of becoming performative instead of personal. Matthew opens up about being better at talking about God than talking to Him. That one hit me. We talk about grace, about shame, about how easy it is to remember our worst mistakes and forget that God doesn't keep score the way we do.We also get into marriage in today's world, breaking generational cycles, apologizing to your kids when you mess up, and why humility might be one of the most powerful things a parent can model. There's something really beautiful about hearing a man talk about choosing his wife every day and putting faith at the center of his home.If you've ever questioned where God is in the middle of your hardest seasons… if you've wrestled with shame… if you're trying to build something healthy after coming from dysfunction… this conversation is for you. And yes, we also talk about his unreleased song that might just save a few marriages.LET'S BE SOCIAL:Follow Savannah Chrisley:Insta: (https://www.instagram.com/SavannahChrisley)TikTok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@SavannahChrisley)X: (https://www.x.com/_itssavannah_)Follow Matthew West:Insta: (https://www.instagram.com/matthewjwest/)TikTok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@matthewjwest)X: (https://x.com/matthew_west)YouTube: (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs7x1ETqOho69bBQqHCJx7A)Website: (https://www.matthewwest.com/)Follow The Unlocked Podcast:Insta: (https://www.instagram.com/UnlockedWithSavannah)TikTok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@UnlockedWithSav)About Matthew West:Dubbed “one of Christian music's most prolific singer-songwriters” (Billboard), Matthew West has notched 38 No.1 songs combined as an artist and songwriter and has been awarded RIAA Gold and Platinum certifications. You first felt the shred attack with Racer X, where the speed was blistering and the musicianship was on another planet. Now Paul is back with a brand-new solo record, WROC — and as always, he's pushing himself, chasing tone, melody, and that endless curiosity that's kept him evolving for decades. A legend to the legends! Jeff Barry was named one of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and is inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. "Tell Laura I Love Her." "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Then He Kissed Me," "Be My Baby," "(Christmas) Baby Please Come Home," "Chapel of Love," "River Deep - Mountain High," "Doo Wah Diddy," "Leader of the Pack," "Hanky Panky," "Sugar, Sugar," "I Honestly Love You." It's mind boggling!  PART ONE Paul and Scott chat about crossing a new friendship milestone and the long road to getting to speak with the unbelievably cool Jeff Barry. PART TWO Our in-depth interview with Jeff BarryABOUT JEFF BARRY Jeff Barry began his career as a recording artist for RCA and Decca Records, but attracted more attention for his original songs. After scoring pop hits with “Tell Laura I Love Her” and Sam Cooke's recording of “Teenage Sonata” in 1960, Jeff joined forces with Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector to pen such classics as “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Then He Kissed Me,” “Be My Baby,” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” “Chapel of Love,” and “River Deep – Mountain High.” Greenwich and Barry also recorded together as the Raindrops while continuing to find success with other artists, including landing number one hits with “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy,” “Leader of the Pack,” and the Tommy James and the Shondells recording of “Hanky Panky.” Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Rock Songs” included six Barry-Greenwich compositions, more than any other non-performing songwriting team. As a producer, Barry helmed such hits as “Cherry, Cherry” by Neil Diamond and “I'm a Believer” by The Monkees. After parting ways with Greenwich, Jeff began writing with Andy Kim, with whom he had the biggest hit of 1969 when he co-wrote and produced “Sugar, Sugar” by the fictional cartoon band The Archies. A few years later, Jeff was nominated for the Song of the Year Grammy for Olivia Newton John's 1974 chart-topping recording of “I Honestly Love You.” Additionally, he found success on the country charts in the 1970s and ‘80s with top 5 singles such as “Out of Hand,” recorded by Gary Stewart” and “Lie to You For Your Love,” recorded by the Bellamy Brothers. Never bound by genre categories, he also enjoyed top 5 R&B successes in those decades with songs such as “Heavy Makes You Happy” for the Staple Singers and “The Last Time I Made Love,” a song he wrote with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil that was recorded by Joyce Kennedy and Jeffrey Osborne. In addition to writing more than 50 different songs that have reached the top 40 on the Billboard charts, Jeff penned the theme songs for TV shows such as One Day at a Time (“This Is It”), The Jeffersons (“Movin' on Up”), and Family Ties (“Without Us”). In 2019 he and writing partner Clarence Jey composed and wrote songs for the animated Nickelodeon show Lego City Adventures.  Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich are in the top 20 of Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Jeff has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Songwriters and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Tre is also the son of pop punk legend Scott Russo; but we really focus on Tre and his new band. In this episode, we chat about his getting into music, and what made him and his friends decide to put a band together. Then we talk about their writing & producing style, and some of the previous incarnations of the band before they settled on this lineup. Of course, Tre shares stories of growing up around his dad and Unwritten Law, and the impact that environment and the array of musicians that were always around. Soundivision consists of Tre Russo, Kerek Martinson, and DJ Hernandez. Soundivision's debut album "Invincible" is available everywhere, and Tre even lets le play my favorite track from the record. We go all over the place in this one, and Tre gives some peeks behind the curtain of what it is like to not only grow up with musical inspiration and support, but how that support manifests itself even into his adult years. Since January 2024, few days have gone by without carving out some time to indulge in Sam Haft's work. Every aspect of Hazbin Hotel on Prime Video is wow-worthy, but Haft and Andrew Underberg have a magnificent knack for crafting one earworm after the next. Oftentimes, one of their songs is the last thing I hear in my head before drifting off to sleep, and it's the very first thing that comes to mind when I wake up the next day. I'm willing to bet many can relate because the Hazbin Hotel Season 1 soundtrack reached #13 on the Billboard 200, and now it's happening all over again. The Hazbin Hotel Season 2 soundtrack managed to hit a high of #8 on the Billboard 200.The success of the soundtracks beyond the main series is a remarkable achievement, but one of the most staggeringly impressive aspects of Haft and Underberg's work is how heavily, and successfully, their songs contribute to the Hazbin Hotel storyline. Yes, the songs can simply be a blast to listen to, but they're also brimming with brilliant narrative subtext. With Hazbin Hotel Season 2 out in full, Haft took the time to swing by the Collider Forces studio to break down his journey to the hit Prime Video series, and also to dig into the creation of many of the Season 2 songs. He offered up a peek behind the curtain of much-talked-about tracks like “Gravity,” “Piss (A Love Song), and “Love in a Bottle,” but he also made a point to zero in on one particular aspect of “Live to Live" because he thinks it's actually “the most important musical moment of the entire show.” Hosted on Acast. (featured photo shows David, his wife Yvonne, and son, Joey, when young) Meet the Incredible Dr. David Antonuccio, Part 2 of 2 Shrink, Songwriter, and Hero Today we continue our conversation with my dear friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. David Antonuccio, a true scholar, clinician, researcher, musician, and champion of scientific transparency. The Nicotine Patch Study David revisited his landmark research on the nicotine patch, a costly trial involving roughly 600 participants who were randomly assigned to receive either a real nicotine patch or a sham patch. The goals were to assess safety and efficacy. The safety data looked reassuring. However, the efficacy findings were unexpected: the placebo patch worked just as well as the active nicotine patch in reducing smoking. The sponsoring company published the safety data but refused to publish—and refused David access to—the efficacy findings, which showed no advantage for the nicotine patch. You can check the link to the NEJM article here.  David writes: "Notice the 48 week follow-up data were excluded in this paper despite the fact that they were available. That really annoyed me. I also now believe that the original version of the paper was ghostwritten and ghost analyzed by the industry folks.in other words.  I'm not sure that the authors ever had access to the "raw" data before they were analyzed." This was important because there was a decrease in smoking DURING the study among those wearing the patch, and getting their "fix" of nicotine that way. . . but what happened AFTER the study?  David writes: "Here is the link to the follow up paper that emphasized efficacy and included the 48 week follow-up data." Notice that this paper was not published until three years later, when the Nicotine Patch had already been heavily advertised and sold on the market. This early experience in his career revealed the tension between marketing interests which focus on sales, and scientific interests which focus on truth and transparency—a daunting and frustrating pattern that would emerge again and again in his career. Expert Testimony in a Tragic Criminal Case David then described expert testimony he provided in a deeply troubling legal case. A 72-year-old woman, happily married for 50 years and a respected kindergarten teacher, had recently been prescribed Paxil, along with Ambien and Ativan. She abruptly, and without memory, woke up in the middle of the night and stabbed her husband 200 times and was subsequently arrested for homicide. There was no jury trial; instead, a plea bargain was used to determine sentencing. Dr. David Antonuccio was called as an expert witness in her defense. He described Dr. David Healy's research documenting a significant increase in both suicidal and violent urges among some patients taking SSRIs, especially Paxil. He argued that this woman's bizarre behavior was consistent with a drug-induced dissociative or fugue state. Based in part on David's testimony, the charge was reduced to manslaughter, and the judge sentenced her to time served, allowing her to return home to her children. For more on this topic: David Healy's Research on SSRIs and Homicidal Urge SSRIs Called on Carpet Over Violence Claims Black Box Warnings and Patient Rights David also emphasized the urgent need to revise Black Box warnings to reflect the full range of possible toxic or dissociative effects of psychiatric medications—not just suicidality. He has long advocated for a Patient Bill of Rights to ensure scientific transparency and informed consent. A Surprising Conversation with Dr. John Nash David shared a fascinating personal story about calling Dr. John Nash, whose life inspired the award-winning film A Beautiful Mind. In the movie, Nash's recovery from schizophrenia  is portrayed as medication-dependent. However, Nash told David directly that this was not true—the medication narrative was added to the script, possibly out of concern that portraying his recovery without meds might discourage viewers from taking prescribed medications. Nash said: "What saved me was the support of family and friends." Music, Truth, and "Buzz" David is also a talented songwriter. One of his songs, "Buzz," addresses the emotional and ethical issues surrounding electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The inspiration came from a man in the Midwest who was legally ordered to undergo ECT against his will. A widespread public outcry ultimately convinced the judge to rescind the order. Forgiveness and "In the Air Tonight" One of David's favorite songs is Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," which he sees as a deeply spiritual musical meditation on forgiveness—a theme David considers one of the most powerful psychological forces we possess. David explains that the Phil Collin's song is about forgiveness, but more indirectly and specifically about the songwriter's inability to forgive. And yes—David sang it live for us on the podcast! You might be interested in this chapter that David coauthored on the science of forgiveness Thank you for joining us today. And heartfelt thanks to you, Dr. David Antonuccio, for your gifts of enlightened skepticism, ethical courage, incisive scientific thinking, and soulful musical talent. David, Rhonda, and David
