How We Heard It

The music industry has always had its megastars akin to today's super-performers like Taylor Swift, Drake and Morgan Wallen. However, there was a glorious decade from the early 1980s into the 1990s when the planets aligned and money gushed out to a select few artists who commandeered the industry. Major record labels, commercial radio, and MTV conspired to create a consumer hunger for physical products - vinyl, cassette and CD albums and singles, readily available at record stores and department stores at every mall and shopping center. The artists behind these albums were mostly in their 20s and 30s, "video friendly" and talented enough (with the help of the right production teams) to churn out catchy hooks for their blockbuster albums, which could spawn enough carefully timed singles that could keep the artist near the top of the sales charts for two or three years at a time, often overlapping with their next album release. Were these the best artists in the history of popular music? Not really. But their timing was phenomenal. These days commercial radio is just a hint of what it once was, MTV doesn't even play music videos and consumers can simply stream everything they want to hear without having to buy anything. On this episode of "How We Heard It," your hosts explain what led up to the music industry's glory days and how artists like Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and Whitney Houston cashed in. And they talk about how Taylor Swift and others are still finding their way.

Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 6ú lá de mí an Mheithimh, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1975 tháinig an nuacht amach go mbeadh an phacáiste comhrialtas chun dífhostaíocht a laghdú agus go mbeadh boilsciú ann, agus bhí plé cráite ann I rith an deireadh seachtain. I 1986 bhí coimhlint idir stailceoirí agus gardaí agus mar sin de tháinig an airm isteach chun é a stopadh I mBaile Átha Cliath. I 1986 bhí coiste nua sa chontae ag iarradh cuimhneacháin a bheith acu in Iarthar an chontae in aice leis an Spanish Armada. I 1997 throid Fianna Fáil faoin tSionainn. Sin Doctor & The Medics le Spirit In The Sky – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1986 Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1974 tháinig Dolly Parton agus RCA Records amach le hamhrán darbh ainm I Will Always Love You – bhí sé a dara hamhrán ón albam Jolene. Rinne sí taifead ar an amhrán bliain roimhe agus scríobh sí an t-amhrán do Porter Wagoner. I 1987 shroich Whitney Houston uimhir a haon lena amhrán I Wanna Dance With Somebody – a dara hamhrán a shroich uimhir a haon sa Bhreatain. Shroich sí uimhir a haon I dtír eile agus bhuaigh sí Grammy don amhrán I 1988. Yasi and Steven talk with the energetic Jesùs Florido, a one-time competitive tennis player turned professional violinist, composer, producer and entrepreneur. An innovator at heart, Jesus takes you through his athletic career, its unintended impact in his musical development, his unique musical fusion style, developing into a music virtuoso, and his work in developing music careers through the Màs y Màs Music Foundation. For more on Jesùs' career, go to https://www.jesusflorido.comInstagram: @latinfiddlerBio: With his debut, Heading North, violinist, composer, and bandleader Jesus Florido introduces compelling artistry balanced on a fine axis of musical virtuosity and pure heart. "This album came about from what is not out there from an instrumental point of view," he explains. "Jazz, rock, classical, Latin -- my album is a melting pot."The savory list of sonic influences can be traced back to Venezuela, Jesus' home, and its pastiche of Cuban, Dominican, Trinidadian, and African cultures. Jesus' family is Italian, and in the grand European tradition, opera and classical music also informed his early years. He arrived in the U.S. to further his studies in musical academia but was soon performing in cavernous arenas to enormous audiences with Yo-Yo Ma, the Moody Blues, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, and Whitney Houston. This high-profile exposure fueled the fire to ignite his own solo career.Heading North is notable for the contributions of the musicians, producers, engineers, and programmers who join Jesus. "It was important to me that project was different from the get-go," he relates. "I wanted to communicate on a higher level." Heading North features a superlative ensemble.Jesus composes in an unconventional miracle of pure inspiration, building songs from a rhythmic and harmonic base -- chords and a drumbeat -- then improvising on top of them. "I may clean it up, but I assure you, on every track what you hear is exactly what came through my head at that moment. To write fresh music I have to recall exactly how I felt about the tune the first time I heard it," he reveals.Across this vivid spectrum of music, the unmistakable timbre of Jesus' violin remains an indelible voice connecting the songs that comprise Heading North. From the sophisticated veneer of the title track to the incendiary Latin grooves of "Mi Negra," the prog-rock influenced "Con Todo," the electro-Santeria vibe of "Gitano" to the funk-informed "Olividado," Jesus bends rhythmic and melodic structures to his will. "Every song is a story without words," he relates. "If I can tell it to the audience when they listen to my record, then I've succeeded." With his violin as a compass, Jesus Florido heads toward a limitless musical horizon with a stunning debut, Heading North."

They talk about when alignment turns into attachment, why being too accessible ain't always a flex, and how people start shapeshifting their whole vibe just to keep someone around. From ChatGPT playing therapist to setting real boundaries with family and friends, the convo stays honest and a little chaotic. David talks his impressive career creating the careers of Céline Dion and Whitney Houston, creating Boop: The Musical, and spills all sorts of music industry tea. Katharine discusses her upcoming album and even breaks out into song during the episode. David and Kat explain how their pandemic performances at home turned into a five year tour spanning 2025, how they navigate working together as a couple, their controversial banter, who in the Hadid family David still has a relationship with, and answers tons of listener questions. Join us in conversation with renowned songstress and author, Adele Bertei, as we weave our way through the life and times of Sinead O'Connor, courage in the name of justice, and the healing power of song. Adele is an anti-disciplinary author, director, performer, and composer currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. She is the author of Peter and the Wolves (Smog Veil, 2020), Why Labelle Matters (University of Texas Press, 2021), Twist: Tales of a Queer Girlhood (ZE Books, 2023), and Universal Mother (Bloomsbury 33 1/3, 2025).   Bertei was an original member of the critically lauded Contortions, produced by Brian Eno on the seminal No New York LP. Reading prose and poetry, she opened for writers such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Kathy Acker among many others. Bertei acted in several underground films, including a lead role in Born In Flames by Lizzie Borden.   Bertei was lead singer in the Bloods –America's first openly queer band of women, and has performed and recorded as a backing vocalist and touring vocalist for artists such as Tears for Fears, Thomas Dolby, Culture Club, Whitney Houston, Sandra Bernhard and Sophie B. Hawkins among many others.   New York City's Museum of Modern Art recently acquired films of Bertei reading her poem The Ragazzi Manifesto in 1978, and The Offenders by Scott and Beth B., where Bertei plays the lead.   She has created and facilitated songwriting workshops for homeless youth at My Friend's Place in Hollywood, and as a member of Wayne Kramer's Jail Guitar Doors, teaching songwriting to the incarcerated at the Twin Towers facility in downtown LA, and at Century Women's Regional Center at Lynwood, the largest women's jail in the nation.   Her next book, No New York: A Memoir of No Wave and the Women Who Shaped the Scene, will be released in early 2026 by Faber & Faber UK.   Thanks to my producer and editor, Lucas Bakker @Iamlucasbakker- whose original music and soundtrack weave the Blue Medicine Journal podcast all together!
