Max talks with Jim Goldfuss about his journey from a career in logistics and retail to fulfilling his dream of flying professionally with PlaneSense, a fractional aircraft ownership company. Growing up around aviation, Jim earned his private pilot's license in 1989 but paused his flying ambitions due to financial constraints. Decades later, with stable finances and family support, he resumed training, earning his instrument rating, commercial license, and Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate between 2020 and 2022. Jim credits his time as a CFI with sharpening his aviation skills and communication abilities, which prepared him for his current role. He joined PlaneSense after a year-long application process, leveraging persistence and networking to stand out. At PlaneSense, Jim flies Pilatus PC-12s as a second-in-command, alternating legs with captains and handling preflight, avionics programming, and monitoring tasks. He praises the company's culture, advanced equipment, and comprehensive training. Jim's work involves a mix of short flights in the Northeast and longer legs to destinations like Florida and the Rockies. He aims to become a captain and potentially join the training department. Jim emphasizes the importance of networking for aspiring pilots pursuing their aviation dreams. If you're getting value from this show, please support the show via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or Patreon. Loss of Control or Structural Inflight Breakup? - Episode 159

The crash of a Pilatus PC-12 this February 24 killed all five aboard. John Goglia and Greg Feith use their investigation prowess to examine whether the air crash was caused by pilot loss of control or structural inflight breakup that led to loss of control. Greg and John discuss the preliminary NTSB accident report and analyze ADS-B data from the flight. They review the facts that show why this accident is likely more than a case of spatial disorientation. The crash was the third fatal accident for air ambulance provider Guardian Flight. Investigators will need to get a true picture of the event through data and weather analysis, examination of the wreckage, and detailing the sequence of events starting well before takeoff. Greg walks through ADS-B data that indicates the initial climb initially appeared normal. At about 18,000 feet, the speeds and heading diverge from normal. Soon after, the plane goes into a spiraling pattern. The data will need to be correlated with the physical evidence collected to create an accurate scenario. “Looking at the data threw up red flags for me. We need the facts, conditions and circumstances to properly analyze what happened,” Greg says. Approximately 15 minutes after departure, the aircraft turned off the instrument departure procedure it was flying, turning about 90 degrees to the right. It appears the autopilot was disconnected about the time of the turn and that the pilot hand flew the airplane to get it back on the original course. About a minute later, it began a steep spiraling turn to the right with a high descent rate. Max discusses possible reasons the autopilot may have become disconnected. The Wellness Paradox
What Virtual Reality Means for Fit Pros w/Ryan DeLuca

The Wellness Paradox

Technology and exercise have become inextricably linked during the past three years. From wearables, to connected fitness equipment, to even zoom workouts with a client, many of us can't imagine fitness without some type of technological integration. Our guest in episode 83, Ryan DeLuca, thinks the next technological innovation we should be looking at in the fitness industry is virtual reality. In fact, as Ryan points out in this conversation, it's already here. If Ryan's name sounds familiar to you, it could be from his previous company, bodybuilding.com, which he founded in 1999, and sold in 2015. Ryan's taking that entrepreneurial success in the fitness technology space and shifting it to the virtual reality segment withthe founding of a new company, Black Box VR Fitness. In this episode we'll explore virtual reality's application to fitness and exercise, particularly as a way to make exercise more enjoyable for non-traditional exercisers, leading to greater long-term compliance. We'll also dive into how fitness professionals should consider approaching this technology right now and, in the years to come, as itprogresses. Technological advances don't have to be a scary thing, and they certainly won't put fitness professionals out of job, if they know how to interact with emerging technologies, like VR. That is the primary goal of this conversation; to give fitness professionals a look over the horizon of a fitness technology that is fast emerging in the marketplace. You definitely don't want to miss Ryan's insights in this exciting area! Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/83Our Guest: Ryan DeLuca  Ryan DeLuca founded Bodybuilding.com in 1999 in his garage in Boise, Idaho at the age of 20. Under his leadership, the company skyrocketed to nearly $500,000,000 in annual revenue before he stepped down as CEO in 2015.  Profitable from the start, Bodybuilding.com was eventually purchased by Liberty Media. Ryan was named Entrepreneur of the Year by E&Y in 2009 for the Idaho/Utah region and Inc. Magazine called him one of the “Top 5 Coolest Entrepreneurs Under 30”. With 800 team members spread throughout six states and four countries, Ryan was proudest of the fact that Bodybuilding.com was consistently named one of the best places to work. Ryan was temporarily retired for only six months before the startup bug bit him again. Together with his co-founder Preston Lewis, Black Box VR was born, merging their passions for technology and fitness and the way they can intersect to help people transform their lives. Black Box VR has six gym locations open where members can immerse themselves in a virtual reality game that delivers a complete strength training and cardio program. The company was named Best Startup of CES in 2019. In his spare time, he's a private, instrument-rated pilot with over 2700 flight hours. You can usually find him flying his Pilatus PC-12 turboprop around the western USA on the weekends for fun, charity, and business. Ryan's an avid non-fiction reader, loves health and fitness, and recently took up ballroom dancing, much to the amusement of his friends and family. Ryan lives in Eagle, Idaho with his wife Nelya and four kids.Follow us on social at the links below: https://www.facebook.com/wellnessparadox https://www.instagram.com/wellnessparadox/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/wellness-paradox-podcast https://twitter.com/WellnessParadox

In this episode, guest Ryan Deluca gives an inside glimpse of growing an ecommerce fitness supplement business from scratch at age 20 into a company he sold for 9 figures, 17 years later. His story begins with him acquiring the domain name, Bodybuilding.com, for $20,000, in 1997, when the internet was just coming to life.   Host John Cerasani,  a venture capitalist, commends Ryan for acting on such a vision, bootstrapping without any other investors, to revolutionize the fitness industry online at such a young age, saying: “There are people who have the ideas, and there are people who can execute the ideas of others. But, there are very few who can execute their own ideas.” Topics covered in this interview: Three key elements of BodyBuilder.com that made it successful: content (including forums and articles designed to replace those in muscle magazines), commerce and community.  The truth about the old saying “It takes a decade to become an overnight success,” with Ryan sharing the many years of sleepless nights fearing he couldn't make payroll. “I was continually paranoid, always aware that there were new competitors…in 17 years, I never felt that I could take a break.” The sale of BodyBuilder.com first in part to an equity partner, where he retained 72 percent ownership, and later to Liberty Media. The challenges of being retired at 35, after the sale, with Ryan feeling a loss of purpose and not wanting to model to his young children being a dad sitting around with lots of leisure time doing nothing. He called those six months, “the most depressing of his life.”  John also shares his angst that followed after he sold his insurance company, and had days of feeling like “a walking dead man.” Ryan's new business, Black Box VR which he co-founded with Preston Lewis, another fitness fanatic, who helped him grow BodyBuilding.com.   The new company is self-funded, but Ryan will be looking for investors as they expand into more locations. Right now, he is still sorting through the complications of a new technology where he has to create all the tools for using it well. Using artificial intelligence and “magically immersive technology,” Black Box VR pairs resistance training, gaming principles and high intensity cardio, for people trying to reach their health and fitness goals. Here is one of several YouTube videos that describe these unique workouts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJk8ftK-yIE In simplest terms, Ryan describes Black Box VR as “playing a really exciting video game with resistance training and cardio to get a really good workout,” which takes the boredom out of getting and staying fit. Gyms in these areas have free tryouts of the new Black Box VR: Boise, Idaho San Francisco, California Phoenix, Arizona Oceanside, California John encourages other gym owners to consider offering Black Box VR as a way to differentiate themselves. Home versions of the product are in development, but not yet available. About Ryan Deluca: Founder and of Bodybuilding.com, now CEO and Co-Founder at Black Box VR Ryan DeLuca founded Bodybuilding.com in 1999 in his garage in Boise, Idaho at the age of 20. Under his leadership, the company skyrocketed to nearly $500,000,000 in annual revenue before he stepped down as CEO in 2015. With almost zero startup capital and no outside investors, his team grew the company from nothing to become the world's most visited fitness site and largest e-tailer of sports nutrition products. From the beginning, the company was focused on transforming the lives of its millions of customers and staying true to the core principles that they passionately believed in. Profitable from the start, Bodybuilding.com was eventually purchased by Liberty Media. Ryan was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in 2009 for the Idaho/Utah region and Inc. Flight Lieutenant Ben Price, 34, grew up on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. From a young age, Ben had dreamed of being a pilot. However in the years following Year 12, he started and completed an apprenticeship as an electrician. After seven years in the electrical industry, Ben decided to chase his long-term dream of becoming a pilot in the Air Force. With no aviation experience, Ben was accepted into the Air Force and began his new career as a Pilot in 2015.Ben graduated on 246 Pilots Course in 2017 on the Pilatus PC-9/A and was posted to No. 33 Squadron to fly the KC-30A out of RAAF Base Amberley in Queensland. During his time on the tanker aircraft, Ben was involved in two Middle East region deployments, VIP tasking and various operations and exercises both domestically and internationally. This is Ben's first season with the Roulettes and first posting to Central Flying School. Away from work Ben enjoys time with his fiancé, young son, family and friends. Ben enjoys everything AFL, the beach, the snow and a good laugh with friends.Air Force RoulettesThe Roulettes are the Royal Australian Air Force's aerobatic display team. They were established in 1970 following the success of earlier teams, the Red Sales and Telstars. The Roulettes had their first public display at RAAF Base Point Cook in 1970. The team flew a Macchi MB-326 aircraft, which was replaced by the Pilatus PC-9/A (the Air Force's new pilot training aircraft) in 1989. Since then, the Roulettes have become a six aircraft, seven member team which completes two display seasons each year (a season runs for six months). The Pilatus PC-9/A retired from Roulettes operations in March 2019 and was replaced by Pilatus PC-21 – one of the most advanced training aircraft in the world.Roulette displays are flown all around Australia and consist of a number of manoeuvres flown in various formations at low level. They are an extension of formation, aerobatics, low level flying, and airmanship skills, taught to Air Force pilots and developed throughout their career. The Roulettes fly as low as 250 feet (80 m) at speeds of up to 370 knots to 685km/h and pilots can experience up to 6 ‘G', or 6 times, the force of gravity during a display. Flying as close as three metres apart, the team showcases the level of visual judgement and hand-eye coordination that pilots in the Air Force are able to achieve.Roulette pilots are Qualified Flying Instructors who work at the Central Flying School, based at RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria. Between displays, they teach other Air Force pilots to become instructors.Socials:About Ben Price: https://www.airforce.gov.au/displays/roulette-sevenRoulettes: https://www.airforce.gov.au/roulettesFB: Airforce Roulettes https://www.facebook.com/AirForceRoulettesInsta: Airforce Roulettes @airforceroulettes https://www.instagram.com/airforceroulettes/Mentions:https://www.defencejobs.gov.auEnjoy the visual here on Youtube

Since graduating from the aviation management program at Georgian College, she has held diverse, international job experiences with Emirates Airlines, Skyservice Business Aviation and Ornge Air.  As Allison explains, “I learned how to work as an integrated team member with colleagues from a multitude of cultures and backgrounds.” Two years ago, Allison made the bold decision to transition her career from flight attendant to commercial pilot.  She left her job with Emirates Airlines and enrolled in the Integrated Airline Transport Pilot Licence program at the Brampton Flight Centre.  She graduated in April of this year and is now flying as First Officer on a Pilatus PC-12 for a corporate operator.  In addition, she fulfills the role as their company Safety Manager. Allison holds a Master's Degree in Aviation Management, and can be found on Instagram @pilot.allison and Linkedin.

If you’re thinking about flying or buying a jet, you won’t want to miss this! Check out the full show notes hereSubscribe to our YouTube ChannelAsk Us your QuestionsSupport Us on PatreonI’m very excited for today’s guest, Mark Hangen. Mark is an extremely interesting guy and experience jet pilot and owner. I think you’ll really enjoy our interview as well because we cover a lot of common questions and topics from folks looking to step up into their first jet. We will cover a lot of ground during our interview such as how to buy a light jet, including mission and market considerations, how to train and build time in a light jet to combat today’s tight insurance climate, the pros and cons of dry-leasing a jet rather than owning one outright, as well as managing and maintaining your new jet in the most cost-effective and efficient manner. We’ll also be comparing the features, performance, and mission profiles of the most popular light jets on the market – the Citation Mustang, 550, 560, and 525 Citation Jet series and why they remain competitive and desirable among owners and pilots despite increased competition from the Embraer Phenom, HondaJet, and Pilatus PC-24. Today, we’re speaking with Mark Hangen, the founder of an innovative commercial ice machine company based in Michigan called Easy Ice. Mark knows ice almost as much as he knows airplanes. Mark has flown and owned a wide variety of aircraft throughout his career, including piston singles, light twins, and large turboprops like the Turbine Commander. Mark’s not only the CEO of Easy Ice, but also its Chief Pilot. Today, Easy Ice operates multiple light jets including the Citation 500-series, Citation Mustang, and the Citation CJ2.

On this episode of the Global Connected Aircraft Podcast, we caught up with Scott Borton, director of national air logistics for Quest Diagnostics, one of the leading medical lab services companies in the United States. In addition to the medical labs and patient locations managed by the company, Quest Diagnostics also operates a fleet of 25 total aircraft, including the Pilatus PC-12, Beech B58 Baron and Embraer Phenom 100. Right now, these aircraft are flying about 88 flights a day to 63 different locations across the U.S., transporting some very precious cargo, including COVID-19 specimens and samples. Their goal is to deliver collected samples to the company’s labs by 2 AM, so that diagnostics can be complete and results are ready by 8 AM the next morning. We also asked Scott about the logistics of supporting a 20-minute turnaround time for aircraft that make multiple stops throughout the day, and whether or not his aircraft feature any type of in-flight connectivity. Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus has arguably created the best brand loyalty in the private aviation industry, and it listened when its customers demanded a faster version of the iconic PC-12. With more than 100 PC-24s now in service, we're finding it does live up to the expectations with all of the features pilots love in its turbo-prop sister, but with twice the speed (and yes, three times the operating costs).

AIN's Tales from the Flight Deck

What makes an otherwise safe pilot believe he or she can pick through the cells of a thunderstorm? In this episode, Wilson Khors and his copilot become so transfixed on making it through a tiny hole in a line of convective weather over San Juan, Puerto Rico, they simply disregard the option of turning around. They’re not alone. Even some of the most experienced pilots have done it. In part, they’re using weather depiction strategically. But is that really wise? Topics the episode will cover: The hazards of trying to fly through rather than around convective weather. How weather depiction varies tremendously based on who and where you are. The advantages of using weather depiction strategically to avoid storms rather than tactically to pick a path through them. In this episode you will hear from: Wilson Khors—Part 135 pilot who encountered a thunderstorm in a Pilatus PC-12 over San Juan, Puerto Rico in May, 2014 Dan Boedigheimer—Business aviation pilot and CEO of Advanced Aircrew Academy Dan McCabe—FAA Air Traffic Controller based at Atlanta Center John Kosak—NBAA Manager of Weather Programs, based at the FAA Air Traffic Control Command Center in Warrenton, VA

A few years after high school, Ryan started Bodybuilding.com in 1999 in his garage in Boise, Idaho at the age of 20. Under his leadership, the company skyrocketed to nearly $500,000,000 in annual revenue before he stepped down as CEO in 2015. With almost zero startup capital and no outside investors, his amazing team grew the company from nothing to become the world’s most visited fitness site and largest e-tailer of sports nutrition supplements. From the beginning, the company was focused on transforming the lives of its millions of customers and staying true to the core principles that we passionately believed in. Profitable from the start, Bodybuilding.com was eventually purchased by Liberty Media. Ryan was named Entrepreneur of the Year by E&Y in 2009 for the Idaho/Utah region and Inc. Magazine called me one of the “Top 5 Coolest Entrepreneurs Under 30”. With 800 team members spread throughout six states and four countries, Ryan was most proud of the fact that Bodybuilding.com was consistently named one of the best places to work. Ryan was temporarily retired for only six months before the startup bug bit me again and Black Box VR was born, merging my continued passions for technology and fitness and the way they can intersect to help people transform their lives. In his spare time, he's a private, instrument-rated pilot with over 1600 flight hours. You can usually find him flying a Pilatus PC-12 turboprop around the western USA on the weekends for fun, charity, and business. Ryan is an avid non-fiction reader, he loves health and fitness, and recently took up ballroom dancing, much to the amusement of his friends and family. Ryan lives in Eagle, Idaho with his wife Nelya and his three crazy kids named Raiden, Kyla, and Bradley. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Connecting with community is a priority for BVA.
