At the edge of the Canadian wilderness, where fog-drenched asphalt disappears into endless forest, the night shift is supposed to be silent. Uneventful. Predictable. But tonight, a lone border officer discovers that some travelers don't arrive by road…and some questions shouldn't be asked. In this eerie, slow-burn mystery from author Robert J. Bradshaw, a quiet outpost becomes the stage for something far stranger than contraband or suspicious paperwork. Reality bends, the familiar grows untrustworthy, and one man's routine shift spirals into a chilling encounter with the impossible. With Drew Blood guiding you through the darkness with his trademark grit and wit, this episode will leave you watching the shadows of the highway a little differently—and wondering what might be standing just beyond the reach of your headlights. Welcome back to Cult Season, where we continue our sincere attempt to make you feel a little bit worse about the world and everything in it.This week, we turn to Stefan Molyneux, online pioneer, prolific content creator, and self-proclaimed most popular philosopher in the world. Alternatively his wikipedia entry describes him as "an Irish-born Canadian white nationalist podcaster and proponent of conspiracy theories, white supremacy, scientific racism, and the men's rights movement." Charming...One thing is for sure: Molyneux is the only man alive who can turn literally any question into a monologue that combines demonic liberals, cutting off friends and family, and female reproductive choices. A true Renaissance man for people who hate Renaissance values. In this first episode we take a brief tour through the Molyneux Expanded Universe™, which includes some infamous clips from his early days as the creator of an online 'philosophy' cult themed around anti-spanking, anarcho-capitalism, and misogyny. We also cover his pivot to MAGA apologetics and overt white nationalism and finally to late-stage Molyneux, where he now lurks in Twitter Spaces, berating callers and insisting the world is populated by demon-ridden NPCs gleefully urinating on their moral superiors.Look forward to learning about his extensive rhetorical techniques, which include thin-skinned narcissism, a penchant for violent metaphors usually featuring urine and anal torture, his constant demand that listeners cut off their families and, of course, his favourite claim: that anyone who disagrees with him is a man-whore NPC who wants to kill you. Also featuring:A Weinstein cameo (because of course)Chris recounting the proto–Decoding the Gurus origin story involving a Facebook post and some early Molyneux contentAnd a rare chance to hear Matt physically wince at a Rocky Horror cold openIf you've ever wanted to hear a preening narcissist berate his listener for raising entirely reasonable points... well, this is the episode for you.Scott Adams should be careful, a new contender has emerged for his crown...Part 2 coming soon, assuming we survive this one.LinksFreedomain Radio 6162: The Most Frightening Fact! Mining Stock Daily welcomes Jon Cherry, CEO of Perpetua Resources, to discuss the strategically important Stibnite Gold Project in Idaho. Stibnite is advancing as a critical mineral supplier while simultaneously committing to the responsible restoration of a long-neglected mining district. The project holds the United States' only SK 1300 published reserve of antimony, a critical mineral the U.S. currently relies on from foreign sources. Antimony is vital for national defense, as the Stibnite project is expected to supply about 35% of the U.S. demand, including crucial antimony trisulfide for military munitions. Cherry details the project's recent milestones, including receiving the federal record of decision and the final 404 wetlands permit, allowing the company to break ground on construction about a month ago. The CEO unpacks the monumental $255 million financing package, featuring investments from Agnico Eagle and JP Morgan Chase, highlighting that Perpetua was the inaugural recipient of the latter's Strategic Resilience Initiative funding. The discussion also covers the current lack of downstream processing capacity in the U.S. for the antimony concentrate and ongoing exploration efforts targeting gold, antimony, and tungsten. Section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — the so-called "notwithstanding clause" — allows governments, both provincial and federal, to override sweeping sections of the other rights the Charter grants. It was intended as a last resort to prevent federal and judicial overreach, leaving power with elected officials, accountable to voters. A compromise demanded by premiers like Alberta's Peter Lougheed, the constitution almost certainly wouldn't exist without it.Since enacted in 1982, the clause has been very rarely used outside of Quebec. But in recent years, politicians have been using it — or promising to — more and more. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has now used it twice in less than month to preempt court challenges on controversial labour and transgender youth laws.University of Alberta political science professor Jared Wesley explains why governments are increasingly invoking this supposed last resort to achieve their goals, and the tensions it exposes in Canadian democracy. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

Despite Health Canada approving a drug treating an aggressive blood cancer, a complex web of organizations, insurance plans and negotiations over drug pricing means it's still not available in Canada.Globe reporters Kelly Grant, who covers health, and Chris Hannay, who covers the business of health care, tell us what is holding up life-changing drugs and why Canadian patients are the ones left with the consequences.Questions? Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Greg Marchildon speaks with Ron Graham about his book, The Coutts Diaries: Power, Politics, and Pierre Trudeau 1973-1981. Jim Coutts, principal secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau from 1975 to 1981, was one of the most powerful men in Canada during those tumultuous years. Equally admired and attacked, respected and reviled, he was, in the words of one contemporary journalist, “a political phenomenon such as Canada has never known before: Machiavelli masquerading as a cherub.” The man who “exercised more backroom power than anyone else in modern Canadian political history,” Coutts not only knew everyone and saw everything at the centre of the action, he wrote it all down. Now, for the first time, his secret diaries have been edited into a single volume that offers an astonishing, behind-the-scenes look into public events and private lives during some of the most dramatic years in Canadian history. Ron Graham is an author and journalist based in Toronto. He has written extensively over many decades on Canadian politics, history, religion, business, and culture. Guest: Bruce Arthur, Toronto Star columnist In a high-stakes war games exercise held in Toronto, top military officials, health-care leaders, and government representatives gathered behind closed doors to game out a scenario few Canadians can ever imagine; war arriving on our doorstep. The exercise, called Canada Paratus, was a joint initiative led by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, in collaboration with the Canadian Armed Forces, the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research, St. Michael's Hospital, and other military-focused organizations. This wasn't about battlefield tactics, but about what happens when Canada's fragile health-care system is pushed to the brink. From mass casualties to logistical chaos, the simulation revealed uncomfortable truths about just how unprepared we are and what it could mean if Canada were drawn into a global conflict where hospitals, not just troops, have to hold the line. Steve interviews Mark Hebscher (00:34:37) the author of a new book called, "Madness: The Rise and Ruin of Sports Media." Mark is making his debut on the podcast and he starts off with a bang. Mark talks about the state of sports media in Canada, the control teams have acquired over the narrative since COVID, and gives his Mt. Rushmore of Canadians in the sports media. Mark and Steve also talk about Canadian rock music and eating Chinese food in Fort Erie. Steve starts the show with First things First and his thoughts on the Italian National Team, the yo-yo that is the 2025-26 Sabres, and a few pieces of Atlanta Braves news. The sports media story of the week looks at Donald Trump's appearances on the Pat McAfee Show and inside the booth during an NFL game on Fox. The show ends with one last thing about red sauce just not being the same since Nonna and Bisnonna died. As Prime Minister Mark Carney heads for the G20 Summit in South Africa, his trip to the United Arab Emirates proved to be one focused on strengthening diplomatic ties and potential foreign investment relations. However, mention of the UAE's alleged involvement in the war in Sudan was something many Canadians and human rights activists felt was missing from the trip's itinerary.Amnesty International claims credible sources have found the UAE to be in violation of the United Nations' arms embargo to Sudan's Darfur region, something the UAE repeatedly denies. The Sudanese war broke out in 2023, as its army battles for power against a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces. More than 150,000 lives have been claimed.Host Maria Kestane speaks to Glen McGregor, political correspondent for CityNews to break down the implications of Carney's trip to the Middle East, and how the omission for holding the UAE accountable could have consequences for Canada's humanitarian image. Welcome to the DFO Rundown with Jason Gregor and Mike Rupp!Gregor and Rupp start by looking at the teams struggling in the West and what the Vancouver Canucks should do right now. Will Quinn Hughes be on the move out of Vancouver if struggles continue? The guys look at superstars who were traded mid-season and the rarity of a high-calibre player being moved at the deadline. Two teams with slightly surprising starts in the East are starting to fall back down to Earth. Who are you more concerned about — Pittsburgh or Montréal?JT Miller has come under fire for a lack of effort on a goal against Tuesday versus Vegas. Rupp breaks down the Rangers captain and what might be hampering the forward. Is the recent stretch by Pittsburgh more reflective of what was expected from this Penguins team? Was their hot start unsustainable? Is Benjamin Kindel the future for the Pittsburgh Penguins?Alex Ovechkin scored three more goals last night and tied Bobby Hull for the fifth-most hat tricks in NHL history. Ovi is 17 hat tricks behind the Great One, but another record is in sight as he sits eight games away from tying Gretzky for the most multi-goal games. How many goals will the Great Eight finish with in his career?Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin both sit in the top ten in NHL points. Given the success of Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid, plus the hot starts from even younger players like Macklin Celebrini and Connor Bedard, which active player will be next to break major records?Connor Hellebuyck is undergoing a minor arthroscopic knee procedure that will sideline him for 4–6 weeks. How concerned should the Jets and Team USA be?Next, Rupp gives his projected Team USA roster. Alex DeBrincat and Jason Robertson join the roster, while Brock Nelson and Clayton Keller drop out from his last projection. Do young players like Spencer Knight and Cutter Gauthier deserve spots on the American roster? Is Kiefer Sherwood a wildcard to make Team USA given his skill set?Gregor gives his Team Canada roster projections. Young guns Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini join his projected squad as Mark Stone and Seth Jarvis drop out. Jakob Chychrun is the only change on the back end for Gregor, as he replaces Travis Sanheim on the projected roster. Is Scott Wedgewood's start worthy of a spot as one of the three Canadian goaltenders?Lastly, the guys discuss the Mikko Rantanen hit on Alexander Romanov in the Stars–Isles game and the reaction from New York's coach, Patrick Roy.Want to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? E632 - Shelley Grandy - Devious Web - A bingeworthy mystery thriller through business and politicsShelley Grandy, Canadian author of the tech‑thriller Devious Web, joins the show to talk about her path from journalism and corporate communications into fiction, and how her real‑world experience in high‑tech and politics shaped the novel. Born in Timmins and now living in Trenton, Ontario, Shelley spent years as a reporter and then as a writer in the telecom and fibre‑optics world, eventually running her own PR firm. That background in data, networks, and media handling feeds directly into Devious Web, which follows Tom Oliver, a Toronto tech CEO whose data‑analytics company becomes the center of a dangerous conspiracy just as he's about to sell to a Silicon Valley buyer. The story weaves together business intrigue, family tensions, politics, and a homicide investigation led by Tom's detective friend, with Shelley using interviews and media moments in the book to naturally explain complex technology and U.S. issues like gerrymandering for general readers.Shelley also opens up about the reality of being a debut novelist later in life: finishing the manuscript isn't the finish line, it's the starting gun. She describes the emotional and practical challenges of claiming the title “author,” battling imposter syndrome, and then having to learn social media, build a website, start a newsletter, and get comfortable showing up in public to market the book. For someone used to writing behind the scenes, events like speaking at the National Women's Show in Toronto, experimenting with Instagram, and nurturing an email list are all part of what she calls “The Journey”—the ongoing process she chronicles on her blog. Her training as a journalist still shapes her fiction: she writes in tight, scene‑based chapters that she can easily imagine on screen, focuses on strong openings, and then has to consciously slow down to add colour, atmosphere, and richer description.A big part of the conversation dives into how Devious Web blends entertainment with timely themes. Shelley talks about drawing on her long‑standing interest in U.S. politics—especially the Trump era and debates over democracy—to bring gerrymandering, data analytics, and the misuse of personal information into the plot without turning the book into a lecture. She explains gerrymandering in plain language, connects it to modern data‑driven targeting, and hints at how the wrong hands using the right software could tip the balance of power, all while keeping the focus on mystery, character, and suspense. The book also reflects her personal passions: there's a romantic subplot, horses and equestrian life, Canadian settings she knows intimately (from Toronto restaurants and banks to Honey Harbour and Caledon stables), and vivid secondary characters like Patrick, the charming Irish “bad boy” whose Las Vegas misadventures were especially fun for her to write. Shelley even shares how she fact‑checked locations after the pandemic by revisiting them in person, turning research into a kind of mini‑adventure.https://www.shelleygrandy.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

In this engaging and wide-ranging episode of The Voice of Retail, Michael reconnects with Selwyn Crittendon, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer for IKEA Canada, nearly two years after his arrival in the Canadian market. Selwyn reflects on his remarkable journey through IKEA over the past 23 years—from his early days in the Washington, D.C. store to leading Canadian operations—and offers an inside look at how the iconic retailer is transforming itself for the future.Selwyn begins by recounting his promise upon joining IKEA Canada: visit every unit in the country and meet the 7,000-plus coworkers who bring the brand to life. That coast-to-coast journey delivered deep insight into the business, its people and customers, the affordability crisis shaping Canadian retail, and the macro forces—tariffs, trade tensions, supply chain disruptions—reshaping global commerce. IKEA's response? A relentless focus on affordability and sustainability as its “new superpower.” Over the past two years, the company has invested over $130 million in price reductions, ensuring home furnishings remain accessible to the many, not the few.The conversation then turns to IKEA Canada's evolving footprint: 16 large-format stores, a nationwide omni-channel network, customer distribution centres, planning studios, pickup points and over 1,000 FedEx parcel locations. Selwyn lays out the strategy behind IKEA's multiformat expansion—why big blue boxes remain essential, and how plan-and-order points allow IKEA to flex into more communities. The brand's omni-channel transformation—accelerated through the pandemic—continues with major fulfilment investments in Toronto and Vancouver aimed at seamless, channel-agnostic shopping.Selwyn also breaks down the brand's thematic focus areas. Last year's theme, sleep, delivered new product development, education, and marketing storytelling. This year, IKEA shifts to cooking and eating, aligning with customer behaviour for an affordable, sustainable home and meaningful family connection. The company's food division is booming too—$143 million in sales, 70 million meatballs served—and evolving from “quirky add-on” to strategic growth engine. The duo explores customer behaviour, the integration of data and AI in retail operations, and the rising importance of trust amid an era of synthetic media. Selwyn reinforces IKEA's position: responsible data use, personalisation done properly, and maintaining IKEA Family loyalty as a driver of lifetime relationships. Finally, Selwyn shares his reflections as a new Canadian—embracing the country's diversity, culture, and warmth—and looks ahead to IKEA Canada's upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations. Authentic, inspiring, and forward-looking, this episode is a must-listen for anyone passionate about modern retail, leadership, culture, and the future of accessible, sustainable living. Health care in Alberta is getting a massive makeover, as the UCP government introduces what it calls a dual-practice surgery model. Critics fear that by allowing some surgeons to simultaneously practice in both the public and private system, a patient's wait time will be determined by their wallet. The province says it wants to try something new to solve wait times, and at least one panelist contends it's time Canadians destigmatize the word "privatize."The plan comes as Alberta's auditor general drops the receipts on the failed bid to privatize lab services in the DynaLife deal, and it is taxpayers who are on the hook for a tab worth over $100 million. There are questions about the risk to Premier Danielle Smith and her government as they invoke the notwithstanding clause for a second time in less than a month to shield three pieces of legislation affecting transgender youth from legal challenges. And as the federal and Alberta governments inch closer to reaching a memorandum of understanding on a new pipeline to the west coast, B.C.'s premier is shocked to find out he wasn't invited to the party – but Saskatchewan's premier was.West of Centre host Kathleen Petty is joined at the table this week by Evan Menzies, a vice-president at Crestview Strategy and former head of communications for the United Conservative Party; Shannon Greer, a senior consultant at New West Public Affairs, who worked in Rachel Notley's NDP government; and Lisa Young, a political science professor at the University of Calgary.Host: Kathleen Petty | Producer and editor: Diane Yanko | Guests: Shannon Greer, Evan Menzies, Lisa Young
