We can talk about President Biden's age and be respectful. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson saw an interesting column from Arthur Brooks that said many successful people think of their lives as a book they've written, but they never write the ending. They don't plan for or think about the ending. She asked her guests about this on A Woman's View. Her guests this week include Meghan Holbrook, Senior Vice President in the office of the president of Zions Bank, Trish Hatch, Coordinator of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program and popular speak, host and author Ganl-Lyn Condie.
Economist Natalie Gochnour wrote an op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune about how the process of developing cities to meet their potential is like a relay race - this generation hands the baton off to the next. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests on A Woman's View how they feel about the Smith Entertainment Group's plans to redevelop downtown Salt Lake City. Her guests this week include Meghan Holbrook, Senior Vice President in the office of the president of Zions Bank, Trish Hatch, Coordinator of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program and popular speak, host and author Ganl-Lyn Condie.
There was an interesting article by Arthur Brooks that addressed the situation Democrats find themselves in with a presidential nominee who is older. Brooks suggested that many successful people think of their lives as a book, but they don't plan for the end. They don't write the last chapter. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests on A Woman's View how they think about this issue. Her guests this week include Meghan Holbrook, Senior Vice President in the office of the president of Zions Bank, Trish Hatch, Coordinator of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program and popular speak, host and author Ganl-Lyn Condie.
Tami Tack & Kim Worrall graduated from the Hoffman Process in 1996. They took the Process a second time after it was rejuvenated from an 8-day Process to 7 days. Tami and Kim have been stewards of this work ever since. For over 15 years, Tami has been a graduate group leader in the Portland, Oregon area. Tami and Kim speak to the power of learning to trust in and live from the Spiritual Self and softening into its care. Kim first realized that his nature had a spiritual aspect during the Process. Tami and Kim share stories from their post-Process past to illuminate how vital this aspect of our Quadrinity has been to leading joyful lives. You'll hear Tami and Kim speak about how the Process work has been vital to their relationship. The Hoffman Process supports not only our internal transformation. It also transforms our relationships. When two partners have completed the Process and followed it up with the Hoffman Couples Retreat, the work can deepen the quality and power of your relationship. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Tami, Kim, and Hoffman host, Sharon Mor. More about Tami Tack & Kim Worrall: Married since 1987, Tami and Kim enjoy traveling and exploring the inner world of relationships and spirituality. They host a monthly spiritual Living Circle and have participated in Thom Bond's Compassion Course for two years, an outgrowth of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Tami and Kim sing together in local choirs and volunteer with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to work with children in foster care. They live in Tami's childhood country home which they have named Harmony Hill. Enjoying an active life, they hike, bike, and kayak. They are deeply grateful for all that Life has brought them and look forward to the next adventure. More about Tami Tack: Tami first experienced the Hoffman Process in 1996, then again in 2015 after the Process was rejuvenated. Passionate about Hoffman Graduate Groups, she led the Portland group from 2009 to 2023, mentoring other leaders beginning new groups. She is a retired school counselor and therapist and has always loved working with people of all ages. Another passion of hers is music, expressed both through piano and voice. Classically trained in piano, she discovered in her 40s that she could compose music and recorded three CDs of her original piano solos. Singing with many choirs, she directs the Lower Columbia chapter of Threshold Choir whose mission is to sing at the bedside of the dying. The proud mother of two delightful adult children and grandmother to four, she prioritizes family and heart connections. More about Kim Worrall: Kim discovered the Hoffman Process in 1996. In 2014, he repeated the HQP, remembering that he is not his patterns—imagine that! A major takeaway was that he has a Spiritual Self. He is curious about how things work, from human thinking and behavior to galaxies and microbes. He is a retired teacher and counselor, a former pilot and mountain climber, and a father and grandfather. Formerly singing in the Portland Opera chorus, he now sings with a local men's ensemble. Having been interested in magic since he was a kid, Kim has produced magic shows and always carries a bit of magic with him. He loves to travel for its broadening view of our world and people. He is learning the value and strength of vulnerability. Guest: Vicki Pyne Program Director CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), they work with children court cases that deal with neglect and abuse. CASA volunteers are the voice for the children in the court room, they help children from ages 0-18. CASA in Jefferson County also has a program that helps provide housing for kids who have been emancipated from foster care, the children in this program range from 18-26. April is Child Abuse Prevention month and May is Foster Care Month, which helps raise community awareness for the work CASA is doing. They are looking for volunteers 21 and older. The ideal CASA volunteer is able to work independently and be able to look at a case and child/children and create a plan for what the child needs. A volunteer needs to be able to set boundaries and still have compassion. Coming up on May 7th, CASA host a Champion of Children’s breakfast. https://www.casajeffcogilpin.com/

We also discuss; An amazing organization called Connect Our Kids.Children aging out of the foster care system. Her children's book A Grandfamily for Sullivan. It is a tender-hearted story about a child's experience as he travels through the grief and trauma of being separated from his parents and building a new life. It is a realistic, yet hopeful story about the power of courage, compassion, and unconditional love.Beth's work as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer."I am a mom to one little girl who lights up my world, and also has big, scary feelings. As her mom, I makes mistakes, sometimes yell, and I'm always more anxious than is necessary. To cope with this, I go to therapy, attend workshops, and engage in self-care just like I recommend to others. I am constantly growing and adapting from a deep desire to pass on tools that will increase children's wellbeing for generations to come. Let's do this work together." - Beth TysonReach out to Beth at her website Bethtyson.com and email her at Beth@BethTyson.comIn order to grow we must reveal our truth and stand in it. I am brave. It doesn't mean I 'm not afraid. The parable Jesus tells in Matthew 25: 31-46 is one of the last things Jesus says to his disciples before his betrayal, arrest and crucifixion. On a first quick reading, one may think - Oh, yes, I remember this one - the sheep and the goats when the Son of Man is on his throne judging the nations. On closer examination, the parable has a lot more to say to us than just to remember to do good things. What is necessary first is that relationship with God the Father and Jesus the Son that so fills our hearts with love that we naturally extend love to others as a matter of course. And although the parable is framed as an end times parable when judgements are made, we are also invited to meet God in the here and now, in the real and concrete needs of our neighbors. God has a history of showing up in places we wouldn't think to look - in a stable in Bethlehem rather than the halls of power, on a cross rather than at the head of a mighty fighting force. In the face of the homeless, the migrant, the hungry, the prisoner. We are also blessed this week to have as a guest speaker Veronica Davis from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to tell us about the important work that CASA volunteers do, and how we can become involved. She will be available after the service to answer more questions.
ABOUT COACH BILL COURTNEY AND AN ARMY OF NORMAL FOLKS Coach Bill Courtney of Oscar-Winning Undefeated launches 'An Army of Normal Folks' Movement and podcast empower Americans to change our country by 'each of us doing what we can. Business leader and football coach Bill Courtney joins with other "ordinary" Americans doing extraordinary work to solve our nation's problems through the new movement, An Army of Normal Folks. "Our country's problems will never be solved by a bunch of fancy people in nice suits talking big words in Washington, but by An Army of Normal Folks just deciding 'hey, I can help,'" said Courtney. Based on his own example, Courtney is joining with the nonprofit Iron Light Labs to launch An Army of Normal Folks. Founder of Classic American Hardwoods, Inc., in 2003, he became a volunteer football coach in America's third poorest zip code and yet 31 out of 32 seniors in his last two seasons went to college. Their success on and off the field was the subject of the documentary film, Undefeated, which won an Academy Award in 2012. "We believe that everyone has the power to create change, no matter how 'ordinary' they or their actions may seem," said Courtney. "And if there's An Army of Normal Folks just doing what we can, imagine how different our country could be." As part of the movement, Courtney hosts the iHeartMedia podcast An Army of Normal Folks. iHeartMedia is the No. 1 podcast publisher globally according to Podtrac. The podcast features interviews with members of the Army such as Arkansas Police Officer Tommy Norman and Back on My Feet Founder Anne Mahlum. It aims to inspire listeners and present fascinating models that can be replicated in their own communities. All individuals are invited to join An Army of Normal Folks. AN ARMY OF NORMAL FOLKS - BACKGROUNDAmerica is at a crossroads. While still having an enviable position in the 21st century, we also suffer from deep divisions, both perceived and very real. From politics and culture to race and religion, Americans seem to disagree on almost everything. These challenges are complex and multifaceted. And they're not being solved by politicians. Instead, the greatest power lies in the hands of ordinary citizens doing what they can in their own communities. And if each of us does this, just imagine how different our country could be.Our solution is An Army of Normal Folks.A grassroots movement led by Coach Bill Courtney, former volunteer football coach of Manassas High School and the subject of the 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary Undefeated, An Army of Normal Folks brings together Americans of all stripes committed to "doing what we can." Bill and his fellow changemakers believe that by taking action in ordinary but meaningful ways, such as volunteering, donating, and changing even only one other person's life, An Army of Normal Folks can make all of the difference. This is how America can overcome its problems: one life and one community at a time.Featuring stories of ordinary folks overcoming life's obstacles and their own demons to make an extraordinary difference, the "An Army of Normal Folks" podcast provides a rallying cry for every individual to join a movement that can change the country. The iHeart Radio podcast, which is hosted by Courtney, launched in May 2023 and delivers much-needed inspirational, redemptive, and unifying content. Episodes include fellow members of the Army, such as:● Tommy Norman, North Little Rock Police Officer known as the "Michael Jordan of Community Policing"● Anne Mahlum, Back on My Feet founder that's helped over 7,500 homeless Americans secure jobs and independent housing through running● Luke Mickelson, Sleep in Heavenly Peace founder whose 270 chapters have built over 140,000 beds for kids without them● Rodney Smith Jr., Raising Men and Women Lawn Care founder who's inspired over 4,300 kids to take the "50 Yard Challenge" of cutting 50 lawns for free for those in need● Arshay Cooper, rower, the protagonist of the critically acclaimed film A Most Beautiful Thing and leader in starting inner-city rowing programs● Jon Ponder, a three-time convicted felon whose nonprofit Hope for Prisoners has helped over 4,700 returning citizens in Las Vegas, with only an 8% recidivism rate● Erin Smith, head of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program in Northwest Mississippi, and Thomas, a former foster care child she mentored● Chavis Daniels, a former Manassas Tiger football player under Coach Bill's leadership who has since mentored over 1,000 kids in Memphis● Bob Zaccheo, who offers "therapy under the hood of a car" to over 5,000 at-risk kids through Project LIFTWILLIAM B. (BILL) COURTNEY BIOWilliam B. Courtney (Bill), a native Memphian, launched An Army of Normal Folks in 2023 on the belief that if each of us just does what we can in our own communities, we can change the country. Bill doesn't just "talk the talk;" he knows this sentiment to be true. A successful business owner, Bill founded Classic American Hardwoods, Inc. in 2001. He continues to operate the company, which today employs 140 people with a 45-acre manufacturing facility and domestic sales offices in Memphis, Tennessee and international sales offices in Shanghai, China and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As the son of a single mom who married five guys, Bill had many coaches who were his real father figures and invested in him. Because of this, helping other kids like himself has been a central part of his life.In 2003, Bill began volunteering as a football coach at Memphis' inner-city Manassas High School in an effort to turn around its underperforming football team of 19 players with a dismal 4-95, 10-year record. The school is located in a neighborhood where young men are three times more likely to be dead or in jail than have a job or be in college. Prior to Bill's involvement, the Manassas Tigers football team had never won a playoff game in its 110-year history. Under Bill's leadership, the team's record improved to 18-2 with 75 players in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. But Bill's involvement went beyond football. "My philosophy on coaching doesn't start with X's and O's. it starts with believing that players win games and coaches win players," he stated. Bill became a mentor to the mostly fatherless young men on the team, teaching them leadership skills, assisting them academically and caring for their physical and emotional needs. During his final two seasons coaching, 31 out of their 32 seniors went to college, which rarely happens in a neighborhood like Manassas. The story of Bill coaching inspired the Hollywood film, Undefeated, which won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Feature Length Documentary. While Bill ended his coaching career with the Manassas Tigers in 2012, he continues to coach a variety of teams and support efforts in and around Memphis. He is the co-founder of Man Rise, an organization that gives financial support to help five city schools with their football programs. He previously served on the board of Orphanos Foundation and supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and The North Memphis Steelers, a mentoring and athletics association founded by Chavis Daniels, one of the central figures featured in Undefeated. Bill's achievements and service have been recognized by several entities. In 2011, he was inducted into Bridge Builders for leadership in diversity, community and justice. He was the 2012 recipient of the Liberty Bowl's Harry Zinn Spirit of 1776 award for distinguished citizenship, recipient of the Carnival Memphis' King's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Business and Industry, and the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Memphis chapter's award winner for the distinguished American for Contribution to Amateur Athletics. In 2013, he was inducted into the prestigious Society of Entrepreneurs for his success in business and community service. He is the author of "Against the Grain: A Coach's Wisdom on Character, Faith, Family, and Love," released in 2014, and is a national speaker on topics of leadership, character and business. He was a keynote speaker at the Paralympics in Colorado Springs, with Nike, PepsiCo, FedEx, and other nationally recognized companies, and has spoken at numerous churches, schools and hospitals.Bill also hosts "An Army of Normal Folks," a podcast launched in May 2023. Bill is a graduate of The University of Mississippi. In this episode, we speak with Liz Meyers, a madre of 4, who decided to say EFF IT, and went against everyone's advice about not sharing any personal information with the biological mother of 2 of her adopted children. She and her family weren't wanting to take her kids away. Rather, she wanted to champion their bio mom to get through all her struggles while still be a part of her kids' lives. And, from that incredible gesture of opening up her heart to her, she not only changed the lives of her kids, but also of their biological mother, who has completely turned her life around, and is now very much part of their amazing family. You just have to EFFing know that when you get to a place of wholeness within yourself, you may start to notice that the things that you do are not really about what you get out of it. Barb is a Certified Speaker, Teacher, Coach and a Maxwell Certified Behaviour Analysis Trainer on the John Maxwell Team. She is also an author, and is currently working on another new book. She's a volunteer with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program for foster children in Southern Arizona and her motto is: 'Empowering others to reinvent themselves to achieve their best life'. Barb and I got the chance to discuss Managing Your Child's Gifts. Barb enlightened me about the DISC method and helped me to get a better understanding of which categories I fell into, but more specifically, to identify the category that my daughter fell into. Having an understanding of who we are and who our children are as individuals and what their specific personality traits are, helps us to better understand and identify how to best meet their needs. Guardians ad litem (GALs) represent the best interests of the child in Juvenile Court maltreatment proceedings. They may be paid staff or volunteers. Volunteer GALs are recruited and trained by the nonprofit CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). CASA volunteers have become passionate advocates for children. And they often can spend more time with children than paid GALs, who handle large caseloads. But as the Neal St. Anthony article describes, the state agency that manages GALs isn't allowing CASA to recruit new volunteers. Unless this changes CASA will soon die through attrition. Join Rich for a full discussion on this plus his in-depth commentary and analysis in this week's podcast. ========== Rich Gehrman is the founder and Executive Director of Minnesota nonprofit organization Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota. Turning Season: News & Conversations on Our Adventure Toward a Life-Sustaining Society
Do you carry stories or sayings from your grandparents, or other elders in your life? How about wisdom that comes through you -- are you a mentor or an elder to someone? Do you ever view yourself as a "future ancestor"?Click Play now to listen to my conversation with AnneLisa Vallery about supporting intergenerational connection in BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & People of Color) communities. When I look to examples of more life-sustaining societies, and imagine a life-sustaining mainstream culture (won't that be something!), one for-sure piece of it is this: More intergenerational connection. So when I heard AnneLisa Vallery talk about her project, Causing Legacy, supporting connection between BIPOC youth and elders, I was excited to invite her onto Turning Season Podcast to share why closing the gap between generations matters so much to her.AnneLisa is the founder of Causing Legacy, as well as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for teens in the Los Angeles County foster care system, a holistic wellness coach, a singer and an artist. She's a beautiful example of what I'm so drawn to: people who are following the threads of what they love, what breaks their heart, and their own life story, to rise to their own role in our Great Turning. In this conversation, we speak only a little about the "big picture" ecological and social crises, and speak a lot about remembering those we've forgotten, and connecting with older and younger generations, through stories of AnneLisa's own experiences. Click Play now to hang out with us, heart to heart, and notice where you recognize yourself in AnneLisa's stories.Show notes: turningseason.com/episode5

From the moment I met her, I knew she was a special woman. Throughout our many conversations, I have learned that she is changing the change the world. "I am a (mostly)watercolor artist creating joyful art from my grateful heart." is how JoDeb describes herself. She is a mom of two plus two rescued pups (her empty-nest babies), wife of a million years. Jo D is a liver transplant recipient... We speak about her journey to being diagnosed with liver failure during our conversation and the miracle of life she received. She tells the world that she is "LIVING MY SECOND CHANCE." These days, in addition to her art, she is a CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocate, standing up for abused and neglected children in court. She is "fiercely feminine,"...and while she is girlie, loves pink and sparkles, she will warn you not to mistake this for weakness. Jo D is SUPER STRONG and will stand up for herself, and her loved ones, and those who need her.Find my beautiful friend here: https://creatingjodeb.com/https://www.instagram.com/creatingjodeb/Organ donation facts at a glance:According to the Mayo Clinic, In 2017, about 8,000 liver transplants were performed in the U.S. among both adults and children. Today's episode is a special treat my friends! I am joined by Kim Vehon, a former foster mom, and current adoptive mom and bio mom to 7 kids. This woman is a serious piece of work who dreams big, but also is able to make those dreams into reality as well. She also happens to be the founder and CEO of Foster Arizona. Their mission statement is educating, encouraging, and empowering Arizonans to get involved in Arizona’s foster care crisis, and they do this in so many amazing ways. I have been fortunate enough to be able to volunteer at one of their events this year, where we went to the Science Center with hundreds of kids from group homes, and just spent a few hours with them, letting them remember what it's like to be a kid. They are always looking for more volunteers! The event I went to was a Kid Connection events. With school coming up, Foster Arizona is teaming up with Cornerstone Church, and it's their huge Kid Ready Event, and they are in need of hair stylists, and families to come and serve and join these deserving youth in need. Something to look for in the future is the Foster Cooperative - a portal for foster families, professionals, etc., to find resources and to connect. And my personal favorite thing that FA is doing right now is 'Keys to Success', a program that allows aged out teens to have an affordable apartment to live in , where they will be able to learn valuable life skills to become successful adults. Connect with Foster Arizona Their Website On Facebook On Instagram And you can find Kim on Facebook! In this episode, we mentioned: Arizona Children's Association - one of the state's first foster care organizations. There's been a lot of talk recently about resilience. You know what goes hand-in-hand with resilience? Obstacles....to overcome. Struggles....to work through. Mental roadblocks....to disengage. We've all experienced setbacks in life, but it's about how we react to them that makes the difference between reaching our goals or letting them fall by the wayside. When it comes to career change, many people, including High Performers, are bound to stumble on a few things before ultimately reaching their new career. Now, how is your career transition going? Is it going nowhere fast? It was for Sarah Hawkins. That is until she asked for help (when she knew that she needed it!). Sarah Hawkins -- our guest on today’s podcast and Career Change Bootcamp Alumni, just landed her dream job (that she didn’t even know that she wanted!) as the Operations Coordinator of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children). She joins us as our featured success story from our Career Change Bootcamp program. Check out the podcast to hear Sarah’s story as it explains Why High Performers Aren’t Afraid to Ask for Help and how the CCB program helped steer her in the right direction to land her dream job with an organization and a cause that she was excited about and to negotiate salary for the first time ever.
Tonight's special guest is Amy Crohn from New York, a returning NAASCA family member who's a survivor of child abuse, and an accomplished marketing communications, business development professional, writer and journalist. Her book "Dying To Live" explains how childhood maltreatment can lead to adult physical illness. As a youngster Amy was subjected to emotional abuse and neglect. A very nervous child, she was quite often sick, and missed a lot of grade school. Amy became very ill at age 20 with mononucleosis and decided then and there that she was not going to let the first 18 years of her life dictate the rest of it. She writes, "I pushed everything inside. But at at age 36, she continues, "I couldn't hide from my past anymore .. I literally had to die to live" (see book). Amy explains, "While writing my book, I learned of The ACE Study (Adverse Childhood Experiences Study) and took the ACE survey. With a high score of 8, I am convinced that my early childhood traumas caused my adult physical illness." Today, after the suicide of her brother eight months ago, she is feeling the effects of PTSD once again. She goes on, "The early childhood abuse simply does not prepare one for the challenges of life." Amy has recently been trained as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and, in fact, adopted one foster child in 2000. She says, "It is my hope that I can help educate physicians to include The ACE survey questions in their patient intake questionnaires and, as a CASA, to help interrupt a pattern that may lead to illness later in life." Be sure to check out Amy's BLOG

Tonight's special guest is Tracey Heisler, from New Jersey, executive director of the CASA program in Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) recruits, screens, trains, and supervises community volunteers to act as advocates in court for children living in the foster care system, giving them a voice that might not otherwise be heard. Mrs. Heisler, herself the mother of 8 children, has degrees in Psychology with an emphasis in Juvenile Justice and Forensics. She came to this work as a result of her mother and uncle's experiences of growing up in the foster care system in upstate New York. It is her life's mission to improve the quality of life for these children while in care and to facilitate their transition to their "forever family," whether through reunification, adoption, or kinship legal guardianship, as quickly as possible. The role of CASA is to advocate for children in out-of-home placement. The CASA is appointed by the Family Court Judge. The volunteer must read all of the child's records and interview people in the child's life and then makes recommendations to the court. All volunteers must be screened, fingerprinted and must agree to a federal, state and local background check before being accepted into a CASA 30 hour training session. All volunteer must be over the age of 21 and be able to provide their own transportation.
