This week on The Literary Life, Angelina and Thomas wrap up our encore series on J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter: Book 1. Angelina and Thomas begin the episode with some thoughts on their Aristotelian approach to literature as seen in this series of episodes. After sharing their commonplace quotes, they dive into their discussion of the last few chapters of the book. Some of the ideas they consider are how the entire plot is a series of symbols, alchemy and the allegory of the soul, and the figure of the “wildman” in the literary tradition. They also go over the characters of the centaurs, the significance of the unicorn, more references to Greek mythology, how Harry exemplifies the “chest” of the well-ordered man, and the great importance of the philosopher's stone as a Christ symbol.  Visit HouseofHumaneLetters.com for classes with Angelina, Thomas, and other members of their teaching team. When God decides to record his first metal album, he will be disappointed to remember that Obliveon already recorded its masterpiece, Nemesis, in the Year of Our Lord, 1993. On its latest episode, Radical Research conducts a much-belated investigation of the first two albums by Montreal's most underrated sons, Obliveon. In the early '90s, the band treated a small-but-fanatical audience to highly-advanced, cutting edge, cosmic death thrash in the forms of 1990's From This Day Forward and the aforementioned Nemesis. Still unsung after all these years, Radical Research is here to set the record straight and shed light on one of underground metal's true greats. Note I: The “pointless, ridiculous 7 inch" Hunter mentions in this episode is this one, a Coroner covers split between his band, Canvas Solaris, and our phurry phriends phrom Pharaoh: https://www.discogs.com/release/2586288-Pharaoh-6-Canvas-Solaris-Tribute-To-Coroner Note II: Speaking of covers: Jeff mentions Agoraphobic Nosebleed's cover of Voivod's “Forgotten in Space.” He says the cover if about 6 minutes long, but it's actually a shorter 3:48. Don't trust Jeff on ANYTHING he says about Voivod… Note III: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. We are offering tiered subscription levels for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it donation option. As ever, if you choose to support us, we are humbled and grateful! patreon.com/RadicalResearchPodcast Note IV: All past Radical Research episodes can be found here, where you can also find Jeff's Peter Steele and Fates Warning books, Hunter's Deserts of Hex Volume 2…and more to come soon! Radicalresearch.org Music cited in order of appearance: “From this Day Forward” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Fiction of Veracity” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Access to the Acropolis” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Chronocraze” (From This Day Forward, 1990) “Nemesis” (Nemesis, 1993) “Obscure Mindways” (Nemesis, 1993) “Factory of Delusions” (Nemesis, 1993) “Strays of the Soul” (Nemesis, 1993) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

    631. Part 2 of Thomas Patterson joining us to discuss his new book, American Populist: Huey Long of Louisiana. "Thomas E. Patterson's monumental biography of Huey Long is a profound reevaluation of his life and legacy, recognizing him as an inspirational progressive thinker, populist hero, and radical influence on the New Deal. Long transformed the politics of Louisiana by standing for the interests of citizens whom state officials had historically ignored. He eased suffrage restrictions so that more people could vote, and voters endorsed his program of more robust government services and shifting the tax burden to those better able to pay. In the United States Senate,... he advocated loudly and ceaselessly for the redistribution of wealth, expanding public works, increasing the money supply, insuring bank deposits, paying old-age pensions and veterans' benefits, delivering a minimum income for families, and funding college and vocational education. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, along with other politicians and pundits, dismissed Long's proposals as nonsense put forth by a reckless demagogue in search of votes.... Despite several biographies, acclaimed novels, and historical studies in the years since Long's death, his reputation today is mostly caricature: a spellbinding speaker, a dictator, a populist firebrand who was unprincipled and corrupt. Using previously untapped personal papers of Long and his son Russell, other primary sources, recent scholarship, and his experience as a lawyer, Patterson provides a necessary corrective as he analyzes the contours of Long's career, deconstructs the elements of his success, undercuts several myths related to his time in office, and explains the circumstances that led to his ultimate downfall. The result is the most comprehensive, balanced, and analytical study of the Kingfish to date." Thomas Patterson founded the Patterson Law Firm in Chicago, which focuses on helping businesses manages crises.  Now available: Liberty in Louisiana: A Comedy. Death investigators have documented cases where ordinary moments — feeding a pet, mowing grass, eating lunch — transformed into inexplicable tragedies that reveal how quickly the familiar can become fatal.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateABOUT WEIRD DARKNESS: Weird Darkness is a true crime and paranormal podcast narrated by professional award-winning voice actor, Darren Marlar. Parental discretion is strongly advised.IN THIS EPISODE: As the crowds gathered for Henry's coronation in August of 1485, an unnamed sickness was already moving through the alleys, quiet and uninvited. Before the crown even touched his head, the dying had already begun. (The English Sweat) *** Long before the word “cryptid' was coined, people were already burying the victims of a thing in the woods that doesn't run, doesn't speak, and doesn't hesitate – it kills, and then it's gone. From the Rockies to the West African forests, the stories don't just describe sightings — they describe actual killings. (When Cryptid Creatures Turn Violent) *** Clinical death was once considered the end, but new data — and what the revived remember — suggest otherwise. Medical researchers studying patients who died and returned to life have documented consistent reports of consciousness surviving clinical death, with experiences that remarkably match biblical descriptions of the afterlife. (What Happens When We Die) *** Researchers studying ancient Middle Eastern texts about fire-based entities called Djinn now believe these beings might actually be plasma-based interdimensional creatures that have been masquerading as everything from UFOs to shadow people. (The Djinn and Aliens) *** Scientists have discovered that the cosmic objects we've been calling black holes might actually be tunnels to other parts of the universe, and we may have been watching doorways to distant worlds without realizing it. (Could Black Holes Be Hidden Doorways?) *** But first… medical examiners and coroners have witnessed some of the most unusual and shocking deaths imaginable, proving that truth can be far stranger than any horror story. Author Zaq Baker discusses his debut novel, Unspectacular. This family dramedy is about young people trying to balance a music career with family struggles and everyday life. The story is told in two primary narratives: Mae, a twenty-year-old music student who doesn't really want a career in music but who is expected to be next big thing; and Ajay, a software engineer and skilled drummer who struggles to balance the job at which he is expected to excel with the music career he desperately wants. Zaq Baker has written what he knows. He's been singing and writing songs since he was fifteen. A professional musician and songwriter, Zaq plays in about ten different bands, so writing Unspectacular began as a private, creative project just for himself.

“Delicious, decadent, and utterly diabolical. No one serves up a scandal like Asha Elias,” writes author Kirsten Miller about this writer, mother, and reluctant socialite. Asha's acclaimed debut novel, Pink Glass Houses, is a seductive social satire about the wealthy PTA moms of an elite elementary school in Miami Beach. We read it and loved it. Her much-anticipated second novel, The Namaste Club is another delicious page-turner about rich people behaving badly, set among the wellness industrial complex, rich ladies doing yoga, and all things fabulous and Florida. It drops next month with a third in the pipeline as part of a multi-book deal with HarperCollins. Asha graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in print journalism then, fresh out of college, landed at Ocean Drive Magazine, where she spent a decade in ad sales and promotion, becoming intimately familiar with the crazy underbelly of the singular South Beach scene. During this time she became an accomplished yogi. When her first child arrived, Asha opted to be a stay-at-home mom for a few years. Until the lifelong itch to write her first novel became too strong to ignore. Asha has contributed to Cosmopolitan magazine and is currently the sex and dating columnist for Miami New Times. Jon Herold returns with a jam-packed episode dissecting the growing hysteria around Iran and Israel, Trump's true intentions, and the media's role in perpetuating narratives that don't add up. From Trump's ominous Truth Social posts and surprise G7 exit to his decades-long consistency on Iran, Jon analyzes what's real, what's kabuki, and what's part of a much larger psyop. He questions the plausibility of uranium enrichment claims and nuclear threat narratives, weaving in historical Trump-era diplomacy and recent J.D. Vance insights. The episode also covers breaking revelations from the FBI, as a newly surfaced intelligence report alleges China mass-produced fake U.S. driver's licenses to aid in 2020 election interference. Jon highlights the broader implications, especially the FBI's alleged suppression of evidence, and connects it to ongoing exposés from Kash Patel and others. Rounding out the show: Trump's immigration enforcement flip-flop, a shakeup at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, zero trust in the Federal Reserve, and a classic Ilhan Omar meltdown. Jon doesn't just report, he dissects the storylines for the real agenda behind the chaos.
