In this episode, Pete speaks to Michael Shinnick, an entrepreneurial business coach based in Dublin. Michael also runs a 7-figure e-commerce business that he started in 2014. Listen in to hear Pete and Michael talk about all things coaching and what it takes to be successful and the steps that can get you there. KEY TAKEAWAYS Everything in your life is a reflection of you and where you are, whether that is your business, bank account or your relationships. For Michael to help people with their business he needs to understand what is happening with the individual, their beliefs and their values as well as certain tactics. Your business is just a vehicle to get what you want in life but what do you actually want? This is a probing question that Michael asks his clients to really get into their current mindset. If you can change the way you think about something and change to a culture of engagement in a business then you can ultimately change how the organisation operates from all angles. Fire in the belly to Michael is whatever it is that will make you take action. Your environment is possibly one of the most important things that impact you, your mindset and ultimately your life. Who you are talking with and being around on a daily basis has a massive impact on how you think and act. Surround yourself with the right people. Michael spent quite some time working in the investment and banking industry. But he had always wanted to do something for himself and ultimately it was this desire and his need to help people that brought him into coaching. From a psychological perspective it's important that you reward yourself for hard work and for when things go well. There are difficult times in all businesses and difficult tasks we all have to push through, remind yourself of these and how far you have come. Celebrate both your own and your teams wins. BEST MOMENTS  “The main thing they look for is someone they respect and someone in the market as well” “The entrepreneurial world can be lonely” “If you’re the best person in the room, you’re in the wrong room” “Nothing in a business happens unless a sale is made” VALUABLE RESOURCES Subscribe to Fire In The Belly Podcast on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fire-in-the-belly/id1499375061) ABOUT THE GUEST Michael Shinnick ABOUT THE HOST The ‘Mighty Pete Lonton’ from the ‘Mighty 247’ company is your main host of ‘Fire In The Belly’.  Pete is an Entrepreneur, Mentor, Coach, Property Investor, and father of 3 beautiful girls. In part 1 of my conversation with Michael Jake, he laid on me a lot of the mistakes that he made through the last recession. If you want to know how to navigate through this next recession, be sure and check out that podcast. Part 2 is all of his advice for newer real estate investors who are learning the ropes. Michael’s been rubbing elbows with real estate legends for years, and he drops names and resources like crazy, so if you’re ready to take your real estate education to the next level, listen up.Eventually, everyone settles on a real estate strategy that they love because it fits their needs and their market. For Michael, who’s in a market with a large military population, that strategy is buying single family houses. At the height of his investing career, he had over a hundred houses, and he and his wife managed them by themselves. Even if you’re just a beginner, you need to understand property management. Michael drops his favorite tools for keeping track of his properties and his tenants. This piece of advice is for anyone who finds themselves underwater: Even if you’ve ill-timed the market, if you hold onto the house for long enough, it’ll rebound in price. You need to worry less about the equity of a home and think about the bigger picture. As your tenant is paying down the principal, you’ve got depreciation, amortization, and growth as factors that need to be considered over just the straight income. And finally, one of Michael’s favorite investing strategies is using a Roth IRA to purchase real estate. There are strict rules around what you can and cannot do, so check out any of the seminars, books, or gurus that Michael recommends. If you’ve got a creative deal that you’d like a fresh set of eyes on, connect with Michael on his website. What’s Inside:—By having less houses, he has more cash flow simply because there are less expenses and less maintenance to deal with.—Michael’s criteria for a subject-to deal.—How does he protect himself from the mistakes he made in the last housing downturn?’—You don’t want the cheapest home with the income factor; you want the house with the biggest growth factor.

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED IN REAL ESTATE: WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: How Michael made the transition from working in the magazine space to becoming a successful real estate broker Why Michael’s secret for how to stay motivated in real estate lies in serving others, and why he measures success by the trust he builds with the people he works with What steps Michael takes to avoid burnout, manage stress, stay motivated and operate at his best every single day Why Michael views difficult interactions and working with challenging clients to be an opportunity to grow and learn more about himself rather than a burden to bear Michael discusses his first book “Happily Ever Always”, and his forthcoming children’s book “The Caterpillar and the Butterfly” releasing in February 2021 How Michael has learned to turn fear into faith even in the face of the many challenges we have faced in 2020, and how that became the theme of his second book How to Stay Motivated in Real Estate and Conquer Fear with Faith Chicago-based real estate broker Michael Rosenblum has worked hard and learned many lessons to achieve his remarkable success; lessons he shares in his bestselling book “Happily Ever Always” and his upcoming children’s book “The Caterpillar and the Butterfly”. He is driven not by sales commissions, but by a passionate need to serve others to his maximum ability. This drive has become his secret for how to stay motivated in real estate and serves as a source of strength and faith for Michael, even amidst the many unprecedented challenges of the global pandemic. Michael’s passion for his work and his dedication to his core beliefs are sure to be an inspiration, and that’s why I’m so delighted to share our conversation with the Pursuing Freedom audience! Serving Others: The Secret for How to Stay Motivated in Real Estate I loved this conversation with Michael, where he shares his passion for providing value, and how he’s experienced massive success as a result. For Michael, the philosophy of treating everyone as you’d want to be treated is at the core of his life, and the growth of his business is a mere byproduct of living with this intention to serve. Michael embodies a “full-service concierge” approach to business, and stands ready to be a resource for whatever his clients need. The experience of going above and beyond feels his soul! Michael’s guiding principle for how to stay motivated in real estate is: focus on people instead of commissions. Fear Becomes Faith There has never been a better time to introduce you to Michael Rosenblum, who teaches faith over fear. You know I’m passionate about helping you act in spite of fear, so I was thrilled when Michael agreed to join us on the podcast to help instill more FAITH in all of us! For Michael, fear is an obstacle that can only be overcome by full acceptance and belief… that the challenges we face today will pass tomorrow. This philosophy serves as the backbone for his upcoming children’s book, “The Caterpillar and the Butterfly”, which teaches kids (and adults!) important lessons about coping with fear, maintaining optimism, and finding inner strength. Whatever fear you may be facing- fear of failure, fear of what people will think, fear of overwhelms – choose faith instead. You will never fail when you focus on giving value above all else! Welcome to another episode of Action & Ambition with your host, Phillip Lanos. Today’s guest is Michael Stausholm. Michael Stausholm is the founder of Sprout. Since the company was founded in 2013, Sprout has sold more than 25 million plantable pencils in more than 80 countries from its head office in Denmark. Michael Stausholm began his career in the shipping industry, working for A.P. Møller/Mærsk, and traveled to Indonesia in 1993, where he lived for 14 years. His most significant interests are green entrepreneurship and sustainability. Between 1996 and 2006, he worked for Nike and Walmart companies, helping them establish more sustainable and responsible textile production processes.  You’re going to love this episode. Let’s get to it! What has been Michael’s past experiences with podcasts? (2:32) The way Michael usually prefers a conversation over an interview.  He thinks Interviews are things you can just Google, but a conversation is like an audience is a fly on the wall, and they weren’t supposed to hear the conversation. Conversations also follow a loose arc, usually starting with who are you and where were you before your business. In a conversation format, you can go into any detail you want, and it doesn’t have to be by the books like an interview. That’s why the conversational format allows for a lot more engaging podcasts for your audience.  What were pivotal moments for Michael that helped him decide to start a company like Sprouts? (6:33) When Michael started working in garments and textiles back in the mid-late 90s, he was in Asia, and it was still sweatshop conditions and factories with workers.  It was all about price, but then Walmart came. Along and they started questioning whether it wasn’t possible to give workers better conditions by paying them just a little bit more. They gave workers what today are considered fundamental human rights, like allowing them to go to the bathroom during working hours and access to healthcare, and so on.  It made Michael realize how you can make a difference in people’s lives with small changes for the people you work with.  It doesn’t have to be about the price. If you make your workers happy and give them decent working conditions, they will work more efficiently and better.  What processes does Michael follow when preparing to speak? (11:22) Michael has been speaking publicly for many years. For him, it doesn’t matter if it's 20 people or 1000; he is always nervous. He finds this amusing because he knows he knows what he’s talking about even if he is not the best expert on the subject.  Once he gets onto the stage or in front of a TV Camera, It’s challenging for individuals as consumers to understand what we as the human race can do about that.  For Michael, it is an essential, enormous impact. That is where Sprout came from, Sprout is not going to save the world by itself, but it can help inspire people to do other small sustainable, environmentally friendly things in their everyday lives, eventually making a big difference.  What allows Michael to have the distribution access that he has? (13:46) Michael states that itis the natural consequence of having a great product because it is also a great messenger.  Broadcast is all about being used as a messenger, and companies are using it as an icebreaker to explain their own sustainable and green messenger.  Parents are using it to explain to their kids how sustainability works. Therefore Michael thinks it is a natural consequence of the patented product. Sprout is the only company in the world that is and can make seat pencils as they do. Because Sprout focuses on sustainability, early on, they got a lot of publicity and media exposure from all over the world, which helped them get into new markets much faster than if they were selling closing products.  Sprout Sprout creates unique pencils, and once your Sprout pencil is too short to write with, plant it and watch it grow into luscious flowers, fragrant herbs, fresh vegetables, or even spruce trees. The idea behind the Sprout pencil is that by taking small steps using simple, innovative solutions, positive change is possible. Michael Melton has been teaching for over 20 years, and has held so many roles. Not only inside the walls of a public school building but in the community of Whitesburg Kentucky as well. For Michael, being a teacher in a place like this is much more than the curriculum he talks about in a typical school day. He knows that being in a small town, you're never really off the clock as a teacher. Michael tells us about his mission to be not only a teacher but a role model as well, and why he wanted to teach back in his hometown.  --- This podcast is part of the “I Am a Rural Teacher” national advocacy campaign. We’d like to thank our partners at the National Rural Education Association, Community Foundation of the Ozarks, Ozarks Teacher Corps, and The University of West Alabama’s Black Belt Teacher Corps. There are many former military officers who are now at the C-Suite level.  Some Cameron-Brooks Alumni who have made the C-Suite level include Debra Crew, the former CEO of Reynolds American, Inc. and now President of Diageo North America; Anthony Noto, CEO of SoFi; Roland Smith, former Chairman and CEO of Office Depot; Howard Friedman, President and CEO of Post Consumer Brands; Andy Callahan, CEO for Hostess Brands; Chris Hsu, former COO and CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and current founder and CEO of Zibo; John McGrath, CEO of Pactiv Evergreen; Bill Horton, CFO of Weber Stephen Products, LLC.; Michael High, Business Unit CFO of Shell Deepwater Gulf of Mexico, and many others.  We are proud to have been a part of their success. I am sure all of these C-level executives would say a big part of their success and career growth coincided with what they learned during their time as a military officer. In this podcast, I caught up with Michael High to learn how he used his military experience to become the CFO of a Shell Oil business unit that generates approximately $5 billion to $10 billion in revenue annually and accounts for 10% of Shell Oil's business. Michael is a former Army Military Intelligence Officer who transitioned from the military to business through Cameron-Brooks in 2005.  His career has spanned the globe to include assignments in Los Angeles, Texas, The Netherlands and New Orleans. Despite having only two Accounting classes in college, Michael found early success in his career leveraging his people leadership, problem solving and other soft skills to develop a track record of success.  He also maintained the mindset that career progression is not always linear. Rather, careers have periods of plateaus for building experience. After being patient, that experience would pay off in exponential career growth and promotions. For Michael, his experience launched him into a C-Suite level role. Michael shares his lessons learned in career management and how he mentors junior leaders in his company.  Enjoy the podcast and be ready to learn from someone who has rapidly and humbly achieved career success in business. FITNESS IS THE KEY INGREDIENT TO FIGHT ADDICTION!   Struggling to be happy in recovery? Are you sick of trying everything to escape addiction only to realize it's not sustainable?    Then you will need to listen to this episode with Celebrity Chef and Fitness Personality, Michael Chernow!   “The business of business is relationships, and the foundation of relationships is trust, because I believe that. I say that in business, but it's also just in general. The business of happiness is relationships and the foundation of relationships is trust.”- Michael Chernow With that quote alone, you can already say that there are lots of things you can learn from my guest today. He is Michael Chernow --  a chef, entrepreneur. He is the founder of Seamore, co-founder of The Meatball Shop, and co-founder of WellWell. He's quite literally the modern-day renaissance man. But what I love most about him is he's really into fitness, and fitness helped to save his life from the depths of addiction, and which we will definitely get into.   How is Michael's life adjusted since this whole COVID thing hit?   Instead of upgrading their apartment when they had their second child, they bought a place out of the city which is their best decision because they are staying there for two and a half months now. Their boys are enjoying their life out of the city.   Unfortunately, his grandfather, 98, contracted the virus on Friday of last week in his nursing home. He has lived a very fruitful life. It's a shame that this is potentially what could be the end for him, and Michael's family sort of really bummed out about that.   However, Michael is a positive optimist, he always finds the silver lining in everything and he also tries to make lemonade whenever he sees lemons and at this time, he's actually out there just trying to make some lemonade.   Michael is greatly inspired by his grandfather because he absolutely lived a wonderful life -- born in 1919, survived the 20s Great Depression, fought World War 2, created businesses, and failed at some businesses. His grandfather is now 98 years old, and his number one priority was great relationships with people and he had an amazing network of friends.   For Michael, we all need to reset and pump the brakes. He has done a lot in the last 10 years and he admits that it hasn't been the healthiest.    He is just extreme in anything he does. He was an “addict.” When it comes to business and work, he's been into the grindstone non-stop for the last 11 years and this time has forced him to slow down, to not beat himself up, for not producing an enormous amount of shit every day, and to slow down to hold his son for more than two minutes.   For Michael, what is life all about? It's ultimately about love. That human beings were put on the planet to love and be loved at the end of the day.   In his own experience, he drank and did drugs because he wanted to be loved, and learn how to love himself and, and in his own perspective, everything that we do at the core of motivation or lack of motivation is the desire to love and be loved.   How did Michael get out of doing drugs and drinking?   He fell in love with escapism. At an early age, he fell in love with it. He started working in restaurants at 13. He worked in the night and he was perfect for it. There were a bunch of years where it was just super fun for him. But suddenly, all of the fun stopped and he started drinking and partying. His dad passed away when he was 20. Michael was not on good terms with his father, and he always used that as a grand excuse to just take it even further.   From 20 to 23, he was on a death march, but he still always had a job and always kept his job in a restaurant or nightclub.    The last few years were pretty dark for him. He stopped enjoying it, and it became just like part of his routine. There were moments like he just wanted to die. He couldn't believe that he found myself back there again, after promising not to do it again.   He clearly remembers catching a glimpse of himself in the mirror saying, “Man, I hate you more than anything on the planet.”   He wanted to die, and luckily, he didn't kill himself. He woke up 16 hours later and he had locked himself in his room and people thought he had actually died.   His boss, Frank, said, “I love you to death, man. I do. I love you to death but I can't watch you kill yourself. You're fired.”   Michael really loves his job so he begged for it and his boss said, “I can't give you your job [bar managing] anymore. I just can't put you behind the bar. But if you get sober, if you actually get sober, and you come to work at eight o'clock in the morning, and you clean the restaurant with the porters for 30 days, I'll consider giving you your job back.”   So Michael did all of it. He walked into a room of people that took him in like a brother, and they understood each other.   Then a couple of guys from that group knew that he had like a little bit of a aggressive sort of anger components, and they dragged him into a Muay Thai gym, and they said, “This is where you're going to wake up, where you're going to have breakfast, you're going to come meet with us and hang with us for about an hour. And then you're going to go over to the gym and train. And then you're going to go home and take a nap. And then you're going to go to work. And you're going to eat chicken and broccoli.”   He just can't live like that anymore.    And very quickly, he started to discover who he was. And it wasn't the guy that was abusing himself constantly.   What helped Michael to reestablish commitment to loving himself on a daily basis? It was absolutely Muay Thai and discipline of exercising. He owes his life to that.   Tune in to this episode to learn more about how he became who he is now. A lot of people can surely relate and will be inspired and motivated to keep on moving forward in life.   Some words of wisdom from Michael: Just do what you say you're going to do. And that's the way you get it. There's a big difference between listening and waiting to speak. You can't learn without listening. You might be able to learn a little bit by seeing something, but the actual long term growth and knowledge come through listening. The less you say, the better off you are when it comes to timing. You don't always have to be hurt. The more you listen, the stronger you'll be in life.   Connect with Michael Chernow:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelchernow/ Website: https://michaelchernow.com/ Podcast: Born or Made Podcast Connect with Doug Instagram: @dougbopst Facebook: Doug Bopst Website: www.dougbopst.com/gift   More on Earth Echo Foods/Cacao Bliss: www.earthechofoods.com/dougbopst Use Promo code "Doug" at checkout to receive 15% off your order

I want you to think back to a time early on in your life when you were a child or teenager. Think about an adult in your life who made an impact on you then, who spoke into your life and encouraged you. It could be a parent, coach, teacher, or guidance counselor. Who is an adult in your life that made a positive impact on you; the person you know helped make you who you are today? The reality is that there are children who grow up in our country and around the world who don’t have an adult who speaks into their life like that. My guest today had someone like that in his life, and his in now changing the lives of thousands of young people by paying it forward. Michael Arterberry is the executive director of Youth Voices Center, Inc. and the creator of The Power of Peace program. Michael began his tenure working with youth by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Iona College. In founding YVC in 2008, Michael drew heavily on his own understanding and empathy for the pressures and difficulties of the teenager years and his own experiences growing up in poverty. Michael has worked with thousands of teens in a range of settings over the past 24 years as a social worker and counselor. As a teenager, Michael himself was fortunate to receive guidance from positive adult role models who helped him over come adversities and set high expectations for his future. Michael recently released his book, “Be Encouraged!!!: 250 Days of Motivation and Encouragement and this time it’s FREE! He’s also launched his new course called “The Shake the Dirt Experience.” You can find the free book, along with the Shake the Dirt experience course information at shakethedirtexperience.com. I have to tell you: I loved my time with Michael. I was in awe of his story, his relatability, and his encouragement. You may want to listen to this one more than once. With no further ado, please enjoy my conversation with Michael! 3:36 - The Michael 101 To introduce people to his story, Michael often tells a story about a farmer and a donkey that correlates to who he is and what he does. The donkey is one of the farmer’s favorite farm animals because after working all day, he lets the donkey come back to the house to play with the farmer’s kids and then releases him back onto the farm for the night. This is the normal routine they have each night. One night after the farmer brings releases the donkey back out onto the farm after playing with the kids, the donkey wanders around at night and falls into an empty water well. The donkey is stuck and cries for help. When the farmer calls for the donkey the next morning, but he never appears, the farmer starts looking for the donkey. He finally hears the donkey’s calls and finds him in the well. The farmer brings 6 friends to help get the donkey out of the well. One of his friends suggests pulling the donkey out with a rope. They miss the donkey over and over until they throw the rope on the donkey’s hind legs and start pulling the donkey up the well. Halfway up, they realize the donkey is too heavy, so they lower him back to the bottom of the well. The farmer has to make a grim decision because he can’t feed him the food his family eats, but he’s like a pet, so he certainly can’t starve him. One of the farmer’s hot-headed friends suggests the farmer shoot the donkey. Of course, the farmer can’t do that. A more reasonable friend says “You don’t want your kids to fall into the well, so we’re going to have to bury him.” The farmer realized he’d have to sacrifice the donkey to make sure his kids were safe. The farmer and his friends all get shovels and start shoveling the dirt. Every time the dirt hit the donkey, the donkey would scream and cause the farmer distress. This continued: dirt was shoveled, the donkey would scream. Dirt was shoveled, the donkey would scream…until the screaming stopped. The next think you know, you can see half the donkey’s body, then you can see the entire donkey, then the donkey walks right out of the well. Every time the dirt would hit the donkey’s back, the donkey would shake it off and step on it. He took every scoop of dirt that was meant to kill him to to save his life. Michael is the donkey and he describes these things in his life as the “dirt”: He grew up in a home with a raging, alcoholic father. It created an environment where Michael never had a day of peace. Michael’s parents both worked full time, but his father’s money went to drinking, and his mother’s housekeeping salary went to taking care of her kids. There was a lot of love, but not much financial stability. His home was dysfunctional, but so were most of the homes in his neighborhood. Michael describes his peers raising each other, but with false systems of dysfunction instead of trying to move forward and get out of it. On top of all, there was also a lot of crime in his community. Michael was able to grow up in that environment, yet not allow any of those negative things to seep in. He refused to let it mold him into a profile of the kind of person expected to come from those experiences. 8:50 - The Master Encourager Michael wants to see people “shake their dirt” the way he was able to. God has given him an ability to make sense of the experiences of young people who are going through what Michael went through. He works on youth development with Power of Peace, his nonprofit, Youth Voices Center, and reaches adults through public speaking about his life. The turning point for Michael, when he realized he wasn’t going to let the dirt bury him really didn’t happen until he started pursing his career. When he was young, Michael’s mom tried to offset chaos in their household was to introduce Michael to sports. At 8 years old, she started him in soccer then basketball, baseball, and football. When Michael graduated from high school, he had opportunities to play any of those four sports but chose football because it was his favorite. He was able to live in the craziness happening in his home but create a traditional household from the resources he found outside of it. His coaches became father figures, his teammates like siblings, and the accolades that often come from parents came instead from the people who loved watching Michael play football. The chaos in Michael’s home became normal to him and just didn’t affect him. Once he became a Christian, and started his work, Michael really started understanding how things happen for a reason, and that God can use his life’s experiences to make positive impacts. 15:18 - Youth Voices Center Michael started Youth Voices Center in 2008. Michael went to college to study social work and mixed his academics with his life story and really started to have an impact in his career. However, he was given curriculums from agencies that wouldn’t work. He would get in trouble when the curriculums didn’t work out, so he decide to make his own curriculums. While working for a nonprofit, Michael created a curriculum called Power of Peace designed from his own ideas and experiences and programs he had studied in the past two create a two-day program for high school students.  The nonprofit started paying him a salary for the program, but his boss showed him how much money was coming into the agency. It was nowhere near what little Michael was being paid. She took him to a lunch to meet a philanthropist to make a good impression to make more money. When it was Michael’s turn to talk, he had notes under the table to speak on all the accolades the program had accumulated. Right before he spoke, he tore up his notes and threw them on the restaurant floor. Instead he told the philanthropist, “Don’t worry about your money, because the person I’m most accountable to is God.” The body language reactions around the table ranged from anger to shock. The lawyer laughed hysterically. Michael just waited. Little did he know, he’d stepped out on faith in front of a devoted Christian with a lot of money. She would meet Michael for breakfast to fellowship. Each time, she’d bring well-known Christian with her as well. Finally Michael got up the gumption to ask her for money for his program, not the agency. She gave him half to talk on the road, and said she’d leave half with the agency to they would not be displeased. Michael still wanted the full amount, so he kept meeting with her secretly. She did her own research and when she realized it was his program, he sold Michael he could have the full amount. In 2008, Michael stepped out on his own and had the freedom to offer his programs to schools for FREE! FREE!!!!!! 21:13 – Fruits of Michael’s Labor Michael says the “special sauce” of his program is when he quiets his spirit and lets the Holy Spirit do the work. Sometimes he’ll be speaking and it’s almost like he’s having an out-of-body experience with the words that come out. Michael calls any kids who go through his program his surrogate kids. He has two biological children, but all the children in the program are like his own as well. One of the kids in his program came from a family where four generations never experienced a single high school graduate. Michael started working with her and became her accountability partner. There were times she wanted to give up, and it was a long road of hard work, but she became the first of four generations to earn her high school diploma. It’s what Michael wants for all his kids who come from that cycle. Tune in at 24:49 to hear a serious and powerful story about one of Michael’s kids who grew up in the foster care system and broke the cycle, going on to earn his master’s in business administration after going through Michael’s program (as a warning, the first part of this story may be difficult for some to listen to). Words are powerful. As the book of James tells us, there is life and death in the tongue. Words can build up, or they can break down. Mentors speaking positive words over someone absolutely changes lives. For Michael, it’s a mentality about creating a culture to raise oneself to a higher level to prevent circumstances from becoming our standard or our expectation. Michael’s programs create community and culture between kids that might not typically have opportunities to interact. His program creates empathy and brings kids together so that they can hear each other and understand each other, and it’s so powerful. All too often we can talk ourselves out of things that can change everything for us. For example, when attending a conference, you could strike up a new friendship on the way to the conference before you even get there, and it could change the entire course of your life. That’s why Michael says, “the change is in the show up.”  42:10 - Getting to Know Our Guest Join me as I learn some fun facts about Michael like what he would eat if he had to eat the same thing for dinner every night, who he’d choose to narrate his life, his favorite TV show to watch growing up, and a dream he’s yet to achieve. When I look back over my story, he peeked into my future and saw the impact I was going to have on the world, and tried to take me out.” “I think survival and being resilient speaks to anybody in the world.” 19:23 “When she said she would give it (the money) to me, I was going to back out because I was afraid…the executive director looked at me and said, “What would your kids say if they ever knew that you had this opportunity and you passed it up?” 24:00 - “Poverty is not only financial, but people who grow up in poverty end up having a poverty mentality…always feeling like someone owes you something.” 25:52 – “It warmed my heart that I had spoke into this boy’s life and he felt like my words were powerful enough that he made sure he shared them with his peers.” 29:21 – “It created a culture in me of trying to raise myself to a higher level which prevented me from using my life and its situation as being a baseline.” 32:38 – “The change is in the show up.” 33:58 – “Sometimes the fear of not coming prevents them from being able to go over the hurdle. So just show up. Walk into the room.” 34:52 – “Fear is paralyzing, so if you allow fear to control your life, you never move. So move!” 41:13- “When you commune with him regularly as deep as I do, life is not easy, but I don’t have to do much to hear his voice. I’m being prompted as the day goes, so it’s not often that I get lost.”   About Michael Arterberry: Michael Arterberry is the Executive Director of Youth Voices Center, Inc. and the creator of the Power of Peace Program. Michael began his tenure working with youth by obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Iona College. Grateful for the role these mentors played in his own development, Michael decided to dedicate his professional life to helping teenagers navigate the difficult adolescent years. Michael decided to form YVC while working on the Alternative to Violence Project (AVP) in Green Haven Correctional Facility. Serving as a counselor in AVP, Michael was impressed by the progress of inmates who entered the program with plenty of hesitation and resistance and left the program raving about how much it transformed their perception of themselves and others. Olivia Fuller: Hi, and welcome to Book Club: A Sales Enablement PRO podcast. I’m Olivia Fuller. Sales enablement is a constantly evolving space and we’re here to help professionals stay up to date on the latest trends and best practices so they can be more effective in their jobs. Today, I’m so excited to have Carole Mahoney join us. Carole, I’d love for you to just take a second and introduce yourself to our audience. Carole Mahoney: Yes, I am the founder of Unbound Growth. It’s funny because we were just talking before we started the call that — I’m in the country, so if you stalk me on Instagram, you probably already know that I’m a country girl, a dog mom, a wife, I’m a mother to two sons and a little bit of a nerd. I started Unbound Growth when I saw that salespeople were selling in a way that didn’t allow buyers to really want to engage with them. It was just a misalignment. And barely half of salespeople were making quota year after year, despite huge investments in time and in money and in tech and in training. I found that even if they did sometimes make quota, it was not always enough because there was customer churn happening in the company. So, I started doing some research and studying the science behind how people make decisions and how we change our behaviors. As a result of that, I transitioned my lead generation agency into a sales consulting, training, and coaching firm. And I took all of that science and data and I started testing it in the field with sales teams. And we’ve seen salespeople who were on plan about to get fired, go from that to being top performers in the company, selling the largest deals in company history, hitting over 200% of quota in some cases — in less than a year. By working with some frontline managers, we’ve seen teams go from barely scraping together 80% of quota at the end of every month or every quarter, to then hitting 130% of quota or more consistently, and growing their teams and the size of their teams. We’ve also consulted business owners and founders, and those in the C-suite to help them to hire the right people for the right role to begin with, because even today with the market being what it is, as far as hiring people goes, we still have to make sure we’re hiring the right person for the right role. We’ve also helped them cut down their hiring costs in the time to hire and increase the success of those sales hires by up to 90%. So, I really kind of see myself as a change agent. I kind of go when there needs to be a behavioral change happening in the sales organization and I really dig into not just what they see happening, but why it’s happening and really get to the root cause of it rather than throwing more training and tactics at people. Although that’s part of it — changing the approach and the tactics — we’re really digging into what’s going on behind the scenes. What are the hidden weaknesses that we might not even realize is the thing that’s actually tripping their teams up from executing the way they want to. OF: In your book “Mindset Matters”, you said that improving sales comes down to behavior change. Why is behavior change so critical to success in sales? CM: When you think of success in sales as being successful in any kind of a job function where you have to perform under high stakes pressure, managing our behaviors in those situations is critical. Whether you’re performing in sports or in the arts, whether you’re a doctor or a lawyer, even as parents and partners to our spouses and loved ones, being able to manage your behaviors, your emotions, and how you show up is critical to success. And sales is absolutely no different. In fact, I’d say even more important, I think. Because one of the things that I love about sales and I’ve talked to a lot of salespeople and a lot of sales leaders, and I hear this consistently — is that one of the things that they love is the ability to tie their results directly to their activities and their behaviors. That if they want more, if they want to be more, their efforts directly contribute to that. And you know, from how much we reach out to people, to how we follow up and follow through and what we said we were going to do, how we communicate with people to help them to understand their problem and for us to understand their world and be able to offer them insights that they might think differently about a problem or a solution. And hear things like, ‘well, you know, I never thought of it that way before.’ This is also though our biggest challenge, right? In being able to manage our behaviors, to get our results. It’s also our biggest challenge because how we show up a lot of times depends on how we think and what we think. And that can be sometimes those hidden weaknesses that get in there in our way. Our beliefs, our mindsets about ourselves, our value, our environment, and the world around us. Those things become our mindsets and how we see ourselves in the world, which is then becoming our behaviors, and how we act and show up becomes our results. Behavioral scientists called this the theory of reasoned action and our intents in that is the theory of planned behavior. Our mindsets and beliefs directly impact our behaviors in all aspects of life: sales, weight loss, performance, in every way. OF: Behavior change can often be a difficult process, and you’ve talked about the need for sellers to really have incentives to put in the effort necessary for growth. What are some ways that sales reps can be incentivized to change their behaviors? CM: In a lot of the research and studying that I did is digging into this and identifying, why are we so resistant to change? It’s usually in relation to fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of an uncertainty of what the future is going to look like, which we are all suffering from to some extent right now. And this is why I think one of the reasons why it’s so important to have a cognitive approach to sales coaching embedded within your coaching framework. Because cognitively, when we’re dealing with those fears and those types of things, it’s hard for us to imagine the future. And because it’s hard for us to imagine, the unknown is scary to us. And so, we avoid it. And when we avoid it, that causes all kinds of other problems. In order to get over the fear of the uncertainty, we need to have identified what our personally meaningful goals are for making the change. What do we want our future to look like? And why is that so important to us? So, goal setting for — I see this happen in school, many sales organizations, when I asked them about, do you or your team have personally meaningful goals that are driving them to make these changes that you’re talking about implementing in your training and coaching programs? And they say, ‘well, they have quotas and they have activity plans and they have playbooks and they have a smart goal setting model to use.’ And the problem with that is when you try to use quotas and commissions as a standalone to try and motivate and incentivize people, the problem with that is the data shows from over 1.9 million sales professionals that the top percentage of salespeople are not necessarily motivated by just money. They’re actually motivated by things that are more interesting intrinsic, like being the best at something, being reputable with others, being a resource to others, mastering their craft, being the best they can be. And frontline sellers and managers who dig into the reason why those things are important and the why behind their actions are more likely to do whatever it takes to reach the goal, no matter how scary it might seem. And that might include letting go of some long-held beliefs and mindsets. There’s a story that comes to mind of a client that I worked with. His name is Michael Douglas, not the actor, the salesperson. And when I started working with Michael, he had a goal of increasing his income and his revenue by a certain percentage. And we dug a little bit deeper into it and one of the things that we found is that he really wanted to feel that he was able and confident from now and into the future that he was going to be able to provide for his family. And that he wanted to make that investment in being the best that he could be for that reason. Now that’s something that’s a lot more motivating than you need to hit X number of quota this month. For Michael, this was the incentive for him to change the beliefs, long-held mindsets, and now as a result of that, he’s closing largest deals in company history. He went from selling three, six figure deals a year to selling three times that in less than nine months. So, this is how we get people to change behaviors, is by guiding and helping them to tap into their why. And not that we spend forever there, that we have to imagine the perfect why that’s going to be the magic pill that’s going to motivate us through everything. It’s still going to be hard. It’s still going to require grit. But when you dig and you think, why am I doing this? And you were reminded of the reason — then you’re willing to go through the uncomfortable changes that you need to go through to get there. OF: You have another book that’s dedicated to sales coaching, and more specifically about determining the value of sales coaching for sellers. From your perspective, what is that value and why is sales coaching so important? CM: Revenue. I think that’s every salesperson’s, every sales leader’s answer to that question is going to be its impact because of revenue. There’s a lot of other reasons why, so let’s tackle the revenue question first. Same data from 1.9 million sales professionals — I also did an analysis on the sales managers and the salespeople who reported directly to those managers, and the things that I found were that when managers who were trained on how to coach and had been coached themselves and consistently did coaching multiple times a week for an hour and more total per week per rep, and it was about 50% of their time — that those managers who did those things saw their salespeople were 49% stronger than those that didn’t. And if you acquaint abilities to revenue, you can look at a 10% increase in abilities can equate to as much as 33% of revenue give or take. You start increasing the abilities by 50%, imagine what that does to revenue. So, there’s that, there’s a retention of your top six salespeople. I think it was a Deloitte study that showed that salespeople who are coached are more likely to stay. And I think it was actually a study that was done by The Bridge Group and ExecVision, that showed the salespeople who were coached not only were likely to stay longer, but they were 45% more likely to recommend others to come and work for your company. So, imagine if more of your top performers who you’ve been coaching then had more others that were like them who could be like also top performers coming to your company, which goes back to the hiring piece. Here’s the other thing of it though, is that coaching doesn’t just increase revenue. It doesn’t just increase the retention of your top salespeople and make it easier for you to hire more salespeople. It also helps you to retain more of your customers. We talked about in the beginning, in the intro, how — I don’t know if I mentioned this part, but actually the increase in revenue is one piece, but we actually saw teams retain customers of over 98% retention rate. And when you’re a SaaS based company, that is an absolutely critical number, especially right now. But the interesting thing — it wasn’t just because of customer service. There was an interview that was done by Mark Roberge, who was the CRO at HubSpot, and he was talking about when they were scaling the sales teams there. And he said that when they started having churn issues, they thought at first that it was going to be related to customer service issues. But what they found was that it was actually tied directly to the rep who initially sold them. So, when they started instituting this type of coaching and training, they found that reps who set the expectations properly with buyers so that churn was less likely to happen later, and then retention went up. I saw the same thing happening when I was working directly with some of HubSpot’s teams and others that not only did retention go up but discounting went down because they were selling more on value and selling consultatively. So, they’re not only getting more revenue, keeping more revenue and the customer longer, but they’re doing so at a higher dollar amount. OF: How does sales coaching help create behavior change? CM: It creates behavior change if you’ve done it the way that it’s not just your sales manager going in and telling them what they should do, it’s not a pipeline review. It’s not a one-way conversation. It’s also not an hour-long conversation that you might have once a week. Ideally, sales coaching helps to create a behavior change because you’re challenging their beliefs. You’re helping them apply the knowledge that they’ve learned in training to actually execute in their day to day on the job execution. There’s a model that’s the adult learning theory model, which shows that the largest percentage of our learning happens in the application and then the day to day, and not theoretical, but real life. So the more that we can have coaching be not just a reinforcement of what they’ve trained, but actually allows salespeople to take what they’ve learned — the knowledge in their head — and apply it to the words and the actions that come out of their mouth. So that’s one way that coaching helps to create that behavioral change because in order to change the behavior, first we have to recognize that the behavior needs to change, so challenging beliefs and approaches, but then we have to practice those new approaches, those things that we’ve learned. And so coaching should really be like practice sessions, like drill sessions. The two-letter word, every salesperson almost hates is “role play.” And not like the theoretical, take it easy on you, this conversation never really actually happens kind of roleplay. But actually, even taking your recorded calls that you — everybody should be recording their calls right now — and listening to them and finding one point in the conversation, one set of questions to practice and drill and practice and drill until it becomes second nature to that salesperson. That builds their confidence in executing in those new abilities and skills that they’re learning. Or fine-tuning the ones that they thought they had perfected as well, because coaching applies to experienced salespeople as well as new and in the practice, in the challenging and in the beliefs, it also happens that coaching can help create behavior change. When we’re having managers who are not giving them all of the answers, not telling them what they need to do, but asking the critical thinking questions to get them to start coming to their own conclusions so that the behavior change isn’t something that’s imposed on the salesperson. It’s something that’s collaborated with them. That’s something that’s really important in the coaching and coaching relationship is that they have to feel like they’re part creating that conversation, otherwise you’re just nagging them. OF: In your opinion, what does good sales coaching look like? What are some of the skills that you really think are necessary for good coaches to have? CM: There’s over a dozen different skill sets and mindsets and even beliefs that need to be incorporated into a good coaching persona, and we measure for all of those with using the same data we mentioned. First, we talked about this before — what’s the impact? It has to be done consistently, not ad hoc, whenever issues arrive or end of the month or pipeline review time, but something that gets scheduled like a religious event on their calendar that if it’s Christmas day for coaching time. So that kind of consistency and structure to it. When I’m working with sales teams as their outsource manager, I sometimes will schedule two or three, a minimum of two or three, 15 to 20 minute calls a week, minimum. And sometimes it’s every day, depending on how much work needs to be done with the salesperson or how motivated they are to want to get to the next level. And each of those calls, like for Monday’s example, we’ll debrief. And Monday’s debrief or Friday afternoon’s debrief is really looking at: What happened? Why do you think that that happened? And what’s a different approach that we can do? A lot of times a debrief might be like a call review, where I will have a salesperson send me a call and they’ll say, I really felt like I struggled at this particular part, here’s where I think it’s going on. They’ve listened to it and they’ve thought, all right, this is where I think I need to improve. And then I can debrief with them and ask them questions. Like, all right, how did you get to this point? What’s the background story? I’ll ask them questions like, why do you think that they reacted that way on the call? What question do you wish you had asked in that moment now that you’ve listened to it? And we’ll practice that so that the next time they get into a situation and call like that they can execute on it. But then I’ll also debrief with them to figure out okay, what’s next? What can happen next with this particular call? What’s the strategy? What’s the approach? What’s it going to sound like? Let’s role play that too. So that’s part of the debrief. And as I mentioned, I’m asking a ton of questions. I’m not telling them what I think happened, I’m asking them what they think happened, and I’m asking more and more clarification questions to get them to start actively recalling what happened and come up with a plan for attack, so to speak. Another thing that’s really important for managers who want to coach is you can’t have a need for approval from your salespeople. If you’re more worried about whether or not your sales, person’s going to like you because if you don’t like your manager, then you’re not going to listen to your manager, then you’re not going to be able to have those tough conversations. Those coaching conversations that you sometimes have to have when they fall flat on their face and they will. And you have to be able to do that and if you need their approval and you need them to like you, it’s going to be tough. Obviously, you’ve got to be able to control your emotions. If you’re emotionally invested in this deal closing, it’s going to be really hard for you to sit on your hands and close your mouth and ask the questions to get them to learn. They have to have a sales process. It’s kind of like, if you don’t have a sales process that you’re following and using that in your coaching, it’s trying to give directions to someone who doesn’t know how to read a GPS or a map. You don’t know where you’re at and you don’t know where you need to go next. Obviously, if you can’t tell, I have a passion for this. And that passion for coaching and really that patience even for coaching –I have a side story. I have a little bit of a scar here on my lip because I have a rescue dog and this rescue dog has a few emotional issues. He’s been abandoned. And so he has some beliefs that get in his way, and it manifests whenever he has to go into his doghouse. He goes into his doghouse and he has this little front porch and he stands on the front porch and he stands there and he barks and he whines because he believes in his mind that he can’t take the one-inch step off of the porch to be able to get them to run around in his little doggy area. And so one day, I was actually getting ready for an interview, very similar to this one, and I had to get on the phone and he was outside and whining and barking because he was stuck on his dog porch again. And so normally what I would do I do is I would coax him out, I would basically doggy coach him to try to get him to come off of this thing. But that day, I didn’t have time. I was running around, I was going a little bit crazy and I’m like, you know what? I just need you to stop barking. So, I’m going to come over there and I’m going to rescue you. And before I realized what was happening, he got this look on his face. Like he suddenly realized, Oh, mom is coming. She probably has lunch. And he takes off running and he has this 50-foot long cable, and the cable hit my head, hit my face. I thought I lost teeth. There was blood everywhere. And I realized I had done exactly what I teach and coach sales managers to do all the time, which is don’t rescue your salespeople. You’ve got to let them work through it. And that’s what happens when you don’t have the patience and the passion for coaching, is that you’re going to give in, you’re going to try and rescue your salespeople, and there’s going to be a disaster at the end of it. And — you robbed them of the opportunity to learn. You have to understand those things — by rescuing the salespeople, you’re hurting them. You’re going to hurt yourself because you’re going to always be rescuing them and handling things like joint sales calls effectively, getting commitments from your salespeople to make these changes, these are all of the things that are necessary to learn to be an effective coach for your salespeople and not get clipped by a dog runner coming at you at 25 miles an hour. On The Future of Digital Assets post Covid19: Michael Kott

Join me and Michael Kott, Founder and CEO of Digital Asset Platform, CM-Equity AG, for a conversation on the Financial Market 4.0. Fund raising via Digital Assets saw tough times since the highs of the Initial Coin Offerings/Security Token Offerings (ICO/STO) Market in mid-2018. According to the ICO/STO Report by PwC (March 2019), the market value fell sharply in the second half of that year, marking the beginning of the ‘Crypto Winter'. A lot of people got ‘burnt', Bitcoin gained a bad reputation…and thus casting a shadow on the Entire Digital Asset Industry. However, according to Michael the tide is turning, with STOs becoming an increasingly popular alternative to IPOs (Initial Public Offerings), for companies to raise funding. The current Covid19 pandemic and economic crisis leaves many businesses with the need to raise money as fast and cost efficient as possible. Clear regulation by authorities across the globe to protect investors, is the pivotal driver for the RE-CREATION TRUST, providing a credible framework for sustainable market growth in Digital Assets. The EU Commission is looking at formalizing a Classification of Security Tokens as a ‘Digital Representation' of a Real-World Assets, such as Gold, Property and Equity and by so doing, include them in the current regulatory framework of: Prospectus Regulation, MIFID II, Central Security Depositary Regulation and The Settlement Finality Directive,…. Collaboration between Central Banks, Regulators and Corporations internationally is key to a cohesive and functioning market. Amongst the main advantages of Security Token Offerings (v's traditional IPOs), are Cost Reduction, Fractional Ownership and broad Access, 24/7 Trading and increased Liquidity. For Michael it is clear, the disruption of the Traditional Corporate Finance Market is here…AND… it is here to stay! Why One Digital Agency Started With 50% of the Team Dedicated to Sales

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2020 32:41

Do you want to grow faster while also staying nimble like a small agency? Growing your agency means growing your team. One agency actually did it by dedicating half of its team to sales. Sometimes it just takes a simple change of focus or a deeper look at the effectiveness of your processes to find meaningful success. In today's episode we'll cover: 3 keys to landing the right agency prospects. Is it time to break apart your agency teams? How to build on successful sales and continue to grow. Today I talked to Michael Weinhouse, founder and co-CEO of Logical Position. Logical Position is a digital marketing agency based out of Portland, Oregon, who in just 10 years has grown to over 700 employees. Find out how a focus on sales led to tremendous agency growth. 3 Keys to Landing the Right Agency Prospects In the beginning, clients don't just come to you. Gaining clients and growing your agency takes a lot of hard work. For Michael, he found the number one way to scale his agency fast was sales. This focus on sales led to partnerships with Google and Microsoft which contributed to the agency's rapid growth. In the early years, this meant a lot of cold calling. For several years, the team was primarily composed of salespeople. Even after the agency began to see success, the number one focus was still sales, to the point that 50% of the employees were sales! But if you are going to narrow-in on sales, you have to do it right. For Logical Position, it was all about making sure each call provided value. So how do you do this? Do your homework. You don't want to waste a potential client's time. Find out what your client wants and don't be afraid to give little nuggets of value or tips, even if the prospect doesn't sign on. Total transparency. Michael's agency uses a quality assurance team to make sure every client they sign-on is the right fit. By being transparent and letting a client know, "Hey, this isn't a good fit," they are able to truly help the clients they do sign on without setting unrealistic expectations. Not everything has to be perfect. Be open to feedback. Take the criticism you get and implement it into your processes. Is It Time to Break Apart Your Agency Teams? A lot of agencies divide work between several teams within the agency. While this approach may work for some agencies, it's not the way Logical Position does things. There are a couple of reasons for this. Michael says he always found sticking to one sector is a quick path to burnout — not good when you're trying to grow your team. When you allow your team to work with people in different verticals they can use conversations from one area to find best practices that work with another. But while there are no teams, this certainly doesn't mean there is no structure. Logistical Position uses a tiered system to incentivize employees and keep things organized. Once you have mastered one skill set and met your goals, you have the opportunity to move further up in the agency. Michael says there is a natural level of competition among his sales team, which definitely helps convert leads. How to Build on Successful Sales and Continue to Grow You may be thinking: "You can't run an agency simply on sales," and you're right. Michael says the tipping point came about three years ago when the sales team had been so successful the operations team had to expand to keep up with the growth. Presently, the sales force makes up just over a quarter of the agency team, instead of the 50% share they had previously held. As for acquisitions, Logical Position acquired its first agency at around the $20 or $30 million mark. They chose an agency they had previously worked with and whom they had built a lot of trust. They have since acquired yet a third agency. From here, Logical Position really began to grow. As a co-CEO, Michael has found his team was at the point where they could take the day-to-day stuff, allowing him to focus on employee and client retention. Scaling an agency can be a challenge. It's important to find a focus and figure out what works for your team. A successful sales process is a great way to increase clients and motivate your team to continue to grow. Michael Levitt has over a 25 years experience career in leadership, healthcare, finance and information technology, with a. focus on reducing and preventing burnout and stress in his current work. He has led community engagement, fund raising, and government engagement, which led to thousands of patients getting access to primary healthcare, reducing emergency room visits. Michael served on the Board of Directors for the Mississauga-Halton CCAC. Michael has the LEAN Health Care Yellow Belt designation through Ontario Hospital Association. Michael is also a graduate of Rotman Healthcare Advanced System Leadership program. Michael studied accounting and management at Walsh College. In 2010, he became a certified crisis intervention trainer, from Canadian Training Institute. That is to say, he's super smart, and very successful, with a great deal of experience in the Health space. What that doesn't say is the unbelievable journey and struggle he had along that way, including a series of worst-case scenarios many people would not come back from individually, let alone all together. And few would come back in such a strong way. But that's just it  – Michael learned a tremendous amount that he's been able to bring together to save others from the same fate of a life so greatly impacted by burnout. I'm lucky enough to have gotten to know Michael as a friend over the years, and am honored to get to share his story with all of you in this episode. Key Points from the Episode with Michael Levitt: Michael works with teams and organizations on burnout recovery. He’d like to make it about burnout prevention, but usually it’s too late by the time he’s called in, so it’s about recovering and then putting in place tools to protect against recurrence. Michael’s personal story started before May of 2009 when the crux of his story happened. Before then, he was in a startup in the healthcare space, which was a new sector for him, meaning a lot of intense hours learning about the space and building the organization. He spent a couple of years living a very high-stress, low-health lifestyle, working too much, being too stressed, and eating really poorly (a lot of fast food) – a recipe for burnout. In May 2009, at only 40 years old, Michael suffered a heart attack in what’s known as the Widow Maker artery. That kicked off 369 days he refers to as his year of worst-case scenarios. After recovering from his heart attack for 17 weeks, he went back to a job he didn’t have. He handed the board his doctor’s note saying he could work again with no restrictions, and they handed him a note back that his services were no longer needed. This was in the Windsor-Ontario area, in the heart of the North American Auto Industry, which was in free-fall at the time. So not only did he lose his job, but the entire job market in the area had dried up. He expanded his search to places like Chicago, but still found nothing. He ended up finding a job in Toronto, meaning his family would need to relocate. He spent a few months commuting back and forth while his wife and kids wound things down in Windsor. On top of losing his job, he also was a cardiac patient without health insurance, so they had huge medical bills on top of the general living expenses, so they fell behind on bills. After six weeks, his 10-year-old daughter called crying that the bank had repossessed their family’s car. They were also getting their home ready to sell so they could move to Toronto fully. Once the family was in Toronto, Michael went back to Windsor to get any remaining items they had left behind, only to find a huge padlock on the house and note that the home was in foreclosure. Despite losing their house before they could sell it, Michael felt peaceful in that moment for the first time in a year (or more). He describes it as knowing that it’s done now. The chapter was closed. They had their new life in Toronto, and the last pieces of their old lives were gone. There was no other shoe to drop. Michael realized he had choices: Realize he survived everything and continue going on living, Play the victim and blame everyone else who had ‘done this to him’, or Look in the mirror to see who the common denominator in all of these situations (him) and see what needs to change. After his heart attack, his doctor told him he would be more in tune to his body and life then he ever was. In this moment is where he found that connection fully, and has held onto it going forward. He looked at all aspects of his life. Starting with all of his heart meds, he asked what he needed to do to make it so he didn’t need them. Everyone wants that One Thing solution, but it was a lot of things. He had to look to remove and prevent burnout through changes in diet, stress management, movement, etc. He also had to look at what was holding him back, and realized he’s a People Pleaser. There’s nothing wrong with pleasing people or wanting to help them, but you can’t do that to the extent where it’s harming you. Michael had learned that from his parents, and took it to such an extreme that he was impacting himself so dramatically that it all crashed down. Establishing boundaries on what to say yes to was the hardest and most impactful thing he did for himself. I asked Michael what I’ve been so curious about - did he need the wake up moment, or could he have gotten there without it, and he felt he really needed a swift kick to change, regardless of how hard it was to deal with. Sometimes, we are doing well, but aren’t actually happy or feeling fulfilled. Why? We should aim for fulfillment, and be honest when and where we don’t feel it. Then lean into it and ask what would fulfill us. Then go after it. Michael gives people an exercise to do that most groan about. Take a sheet of paper, draw a line down the middle, and write a list of things they really enjoy doing on one side – having their morning coffee, going to the beach, having lunch with a friend, etc. Then on the other side of the paper, write down the last time you did that thing. This is where people groan. What we realize is how rarely we are doing the things we really like. Then we look at why – and we often find excuses, or say we’re too busy. Many of these things aren’t so big that we can’t do them easily or flexibly (e.g. taking a big vacation takes lots of planning versus watching a show you like on TV, which is easy). So what are you doing in your day mindlessly that’s eating your time so you find it hard to do what you would rather be doing? What changes can you make to be more present and mindful in these decisions. Then schedule two of those things you like and don’t allow that time to get overwritten by anything else. It will feel uncomfortable for many of us, but once we do this, we start to see possibilities for fulfillment instead of reasons why we can’t be fulfilled. Michael also shared the need to look at our calendar and ensure we have some slack time, and make some tough calls about which meetings we don’t really need to attend. It may mean some uncomfortable moments when we tell someone we can’t make their meeting, yet doing so can be beneficial all around. The benefit for the people you may say “No” to is that you are more present in the meetings you’re in, which could include others with them. If you attend and are drained or distracted, that’s not serving them either. We talked about a strategy Michael heard of where you look at all the things you do, and see if there are two things you can stop doing. For Michael, he left two boards he was on. Tax Resolution Success Show
Solve Tax Problems If You Want To Build a Big Tax Resolution Business with Chris Micklatcher

Tax Resolution Success Show

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2019 36:19

Chris Micklatcher started off as a lawyer in Portland, Maine, focusing on estate planning and tax work. The transition to tax resolution came 30 years ago when a client came into his office that needed some help with his back taxes. Back then, it was very easy to find new clients, but now the market for the business has completely changed. [5:40] There are around 3,300 counties in the United States, and for some of them, when the IRS files a tax lien, you will be able to find that info on their website. You can also buy a list from a list broker of federal tax liens. [6:55] Chris met Michael and signed up to his Tax Domination program in Orlando. Prior to that, Chris did tax resolution work in addition to general law work, but it wasn’t a focus of the business. He wanted to do something he loved, and he found that people really appreciated the tax resolution service, which is very different from the experience of working with law clients. [8:30] The tax resolution side of Chris’s business was around $5000 a month. After purchasing the Tax Domination program and coming into the mastermind group his tax resolution business has grown to $55,000 a month with additional deferred revenue each month as well. [12:00] Chris has hired four employees to help with the workload and is now hoping to start retiring slowly, minimizing his work schedule over time. His team handles approximately $850,000 in yearly revenue. [14:55] The first major lesson that Chris learned was putting the processes in place and understanding the value of his time. Before the program Chris never spent any time on marketing, he did most of that on the fly. Now he spends a minimum of half a day a week focusing on marketing and trying to think outside the box. Eliminating the deadwood in both clients and employees was the third major lesson. The concept of Chris’s employees selling his business for him changed the way he thought about hiring. [16:45] When people call your office off of your marketing, the first impression they have is the person who answers the phone, and most practitioners don’t give that enough thought. Your front office people have to be very good. There is a big difference between a receptionist and an intake person. [18:15] Non-Filers are some of the most common clients that Michael has been seeing, mainly due to the focus of his marketing efforts. [20:35] This is the first time in seven years that the IRS has gotten over $300 million added to their budget from Congress. The pendulum is swinging back now to compliance enforcement. [23:25] If Michael had to do it all over again, he would have set aside one day a week to plan his marketing strategy out. You also have to understand that you will be overloaded with business, so you need to be able to complete the business that comes into your office. [24:30] Many practitioners believe that marketing is below them, and that once they open up shop, they deserve the business. For Michael, the problem was never marketing, it was delegating the work to an employee. The key thing is being able to hire the right people and being able to delegate in confidence. [26:15] You want to put yourself out there as a tax resolution expert because everyone thinks an accountant is a tax resolution expert as well, but that usually leads to a bad experience for the customer. There are three distinct areas of taxes: tax planning, tax preparation, and tax resolution. You can do all three, but the way you present your business matters. [27:45] You need to brand yourself because it will put you into a position of authority. Tax resolution in the only field of taxes where you are solving a big problem which is why it’s the most lucrative and profitable. Michael Wagner started investing in small multi-family properties in 2007 just after graduating college. After 4 years of modest success, he realized his chosen strategy was not going to get him where he wanted to go fast enough so he pivoted into a different niche, Self Storage. In September of 2011, he quit his job as a Physical Therapist to take over a storage facility that was losing $2000 per month. After turning that facility around, he owns two others and is continuing to buy facilities that have a value add opportunity. How much money did he get started with? For his first apartment he had $5,000. For many of his other deals he needed $20,000-50,000. Michael has also leveraged other sources of money for his investments How long did it take for him to educate himself? It took Michael 6 month to a year. Some of that was learning and some of it was looking for deals. Investing in self storage takes a bit more knowledge than other forms of real estate investment might take. How much time does it take him now? He has to put in 5-8 hours a week to manage his business and spends more time on self development and looking for deals. For Michael it’s like a full-time job but it doesn’t have to be. Could he do this from anywhere in the world? Michael doesn’t like to spend more that two weeks away from his business but if he put systems in place he could go away for longer. GUEST BIO: Michael Kennedy is known best for being a Python expert. He is a Python Software Foundation fellow. His two podcasts Talk Python to Me and Python Bytes are well regarded, as are his developer training courses. Michael has been working in the developer field for more than 20 years and has spoken at numerous conferences including NDC and DevWeek. EPISODE DESCRIPTION: In this episode, Phil interviews Python Specialist Michael Kennedy. He is the host of Python Bytes and Talk Python to Me. Michael is also the founder of Talk Python training and a fellow of the Python Software Foundation. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (0.59) – Phil asked Michael to tell the audience a bit more about himself? In response, Michael explained that when he started his work life he focused on the science sector. While working on his maths PhD, he discovered programming. He said, “It just really connected with me”. That was 20 years ago, yet every day he feels a little bit more excited than he was the day before. With IT you are always learning, which is exciting.  (2.05) – Phil asks Michael for a unique IT career tip. Michael started by saying that it is important to remember that “small things add up”.  He said, we often overestimate what we can accomplish in a week, but massively underestimate what can be done in a couple of years. He pointed out that you need to carry on learning to progress. He also explained that it is important to realize that in the IT world there are no longer gatekeepers. The days when you had to ask permission from somewhere like IBM or Oracle to be accepted into the IT world are gone. Today, you are in control. “You no longer have to ask permission to be part of this, excel and be a leader, you just have to want it”If you want to do something all you have to do is to work gradually towards doing it. (4.13) – Michael was asked to share his worst career moment by Phil. Michael said that happened while he was working for DARPA, which is an advanced US government research facility. He was working on a secret project that used software to pull together the efforts of several companies and organizations. Unfortunately, the software did not work properly, so needed debugging. Under normal circumstances that would be a tedious task, but not a huge problem. But, for this project, his main partner was a man from the UK and he did not have the necessary security clearance to attend the meetings where the issues were discussed. He could not be in the room. Someone had to summarize what the problems were and he had to use that information to debug the software. Very stressful. (6.55) Phil asked “did you learn anything particular from this situation?” Michael said, yes, we should have tested more and used a technical person who could have physical access to the thing we were working on. (7.23) – On the flipside, Phil asks Michael what his best career moment was. Michael explained that he started working as a developer and enjoyed that work. But, it was starting to teach programming and developer skills that has been the highlight of his career, so far. (11.14) – Phil wants to know what excites Michael about the future for the IT industry. The fact that it is relatively easy for new people to enter the field and learn is something that Michael finds exciting. Students no longer have to hope that they can work it out from a book because there is plenty of support available. (11.14) – What drew you to a career in IT? Michael enjoys the fact you actually get to build things, rather than just working with theories. He enjoys the debate involved in developing a product and being able to press the button and find out if what you have done actually works. (12.10) – What is the best career advice you have been given? Because Michael was self-taught he said that he did not get much IT career advice from mentors and teachers. But, after speaking to others working in the field, he thinks that the most important piece of advice he can share is “just take action.” He said, “Even if you go the wrong way you will learn enough that you actually learn more about what the right way is.” (13.38) – Phil asks what approach Michael would take if he were to start his IT career again, right now. Michael says he would have been more selective and strategic when it came to choosing the projects he worked on. He feels that this would have made things easier for him. (14.30) – Phil asks what career objective Michael is currently focusing on. Michael said “I'm really focused on trying to inspire and inform developers”. The fundamental goal of his podcasts is to make people aware of new things that they should be interested in. He is working to make it easier for people to learn Python and develop successful IT careers. (15.33) – What would you consider to be your most important non-technical skill? For Michael, learning to speak publically had been especially beneficial. The urge to share helped him to overcome his fear and communicate better. (16.36) – Phil asks Michael to share a few final words of career advice. Michael said – “every day, think about where you want to put your energy and really what you want” That may mean taking a job for 5 years with Google, so that you can learn the skills you need to build your own product. Whatever you need to do to achieve your dreams, just go ahead and do it. BEST MOMENTS: (1.30) Michael - "Every day, I'm just a little more excited than I was the day before about it. It's great." (2.00) Michael - "We often overestimate what we can accomplish in a week, but massively underestimate what can be done in a couple of years." (3.38) Michael - "You no longer have to ask permission to be part of this and excel and be a leader  you just have to want it." (3.45) Phil - "I think the opportunity is there. And it's up to the individual to take the opportunity." (10.40) Michael - "Because so much stuff is new you don't have to do it for 20 years to be an expert" (13.20) Michael - Just take action. He said, “Even if you go the wrong way you will learn enough that you actually learn more about what the right way is.” (18.00) Michael - "Every day, think about where you want to put your energy and really what you want." It is important for individual therapists to have what is known as a Theoretical Orientation. This is the therapists understanding of how human pathology develops and the most effective ways of treating it. For Brett, his theoretical orientation is from an experiential psychology perspective.  This includes humanistic psychology elements from the school of Carl Rogers as well as existential psychology particularly Irvin Yalom. For Michael, this understanding is rooted in the work of Anna Freud and her ego psychology as well as her contemporaries in psychodynamic theory. Most specifically Michael subscribes to the self-psychology model promoted by Heintz Kohut.  Existential Psychology:  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evil-deeds/201101/what-is-existential-psychotherapy Self Psychology: https://www.goodtherapy.org/learn-about-therapy/types/self-psychology

In this episode, Phil talks to Michael Bolton, a consulting software tester and testing teacher who helps people to solve testing problems that they didn’t realize they could solve. Michael is also the co-author of Rapid Software Testing, a methodology and mindset for testing software expertly and credibly in uncertain conditions and under extreme time pressure. Michael has more than 25 years of experience testing, developing, managing and writing about software. And for almost 20 years he has led DevelopSense, a Toronto-based testing and development consultancy. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (2.00) – Phil asks Michael to tell everyone a bit more about himself. Michael explains that he is – “in a perpetual state of dissatisfaction with the state of software, in the state of testing.” But that he knew this was not necessarily a bad thing because a state of dissatisfaction leads to a desire to change things for the better. Software testers need to help people to identify the problems that represent risks to their businesses. They need to be good critics and to be able to fully understand the value and importance of small things. (3.46) – Phil asks for a unique career tip. Michael says that IT specialists need to have a reputation for “excellence, for good work, for competency and for ethics.” You need to work closely with others and be willing to put yourself out there. It is important to express your thoughts and feelings and be prepared to share your experiences, good and bad. You should not be reticent to “expose yourself”. He went onto say: “That's how we come to a better world. We get to that by explaining our experience to each other.” (6.07) – Phil asks to hear about his worst career moment and what Michael learned from it. For Michael, this happened many years ago when he was working as a program manager on a memory management system. The package did not work as well as was anticipated. Unfortunately, at first, he and the team did not acknowledge the problem fully. He said: “The big mistake I made was looking for circumstances in which the product would work successfully.” Luckily Larry, the development manager, did fully recognize the seriousness of the issue and encouraged the team to actually tackle the problem. This experience made Michael realize that “a focus on the problem rather than a focus on success is the path to success.” From that point Michael refocused his attention on testing and awareness of the product and pricing. (11.13) – Phil asks Michael to share a career highlight. For Michael this is a tricky question to answer. No one project stood out. But he explained that he felt he had achieved the most when he was able to thoroughly examine the product and gain a deep understanding of it. When he was given the time to do that, he was able to work with the client more effectively. Together they were always able to identify those bugs that really needed fixing and avoid wasting time sorting out those that could easily be “lived with”. (14.00) – Phil wants to know what things about the future of IT Michael finds particularly interesting or exciting. Michael responds by saying: “I would like to see the application of a little bit more skepticism and a little bit more nuance in our enthusiasm for new technologies we've seen over the last seven years.” He went on to explain that while these innovations could bring us together they could also drive us apart. So he wants to see us be “a little bit more sober, a little bit more reflective in our embrace of new technologies.” He believes that it is the best way to be prepared to deal with problems which can and do arise when things change. (16.36) – Phil asks, “what first attracted you to a career in IT?” Michael previously worked in the theatre, so the prospect of a steady income was what first attracted him to the IT field. For many years he had worked for companies as a full time employee before becoming an independent contractor. Once involved in the IT world he became fascinated by “figuring out how these machines work and what makes them not work.” He relishes the chance to “create beautiful and amazing things”. (18.47) – Phil says - what is the best career advice you've ever received? Michael quickly responds by saying “your CV must be focused on solving the problem for the hiring manager.” It should not be an elaborate list of where you worked. This sound advice influences most areas of Michael’s work. When he works on a project he asks himself repeatedly – “What is the problem that the person hiring me is trying to address?” This habit keeps him on track and ensures he does not try to contribute things that do not actually solve the problem at hand. (21.10) – Phil asks, if you were to begin your IT career again, what would you do? “I would focus on diversity.” Working in many different places, in various roles and on a range of projects has served Michael well. (22.57) - What career objectives are you currently focusing on? Michael says - “I'm currently focusing on trying to develop my reach.” Michael wants to influence as many different IT team members as possible. He wants everyone from the project manager to the coder and testers to work closer together. Michael is currently reaching out beyond the testers who currently make up his main audience. (24.25) – Phil’s next question is - What non-technical skill has helped you most in your career? To which Michael said: “Being able to structure a good piece of writing, being able to structure a talk, being able to organize material so that I can get an idea across.” He also feels that - being able to apply critical thinking to an argument, identify objections and address them is a great skill to have. (26.45) – Lastly, Phil says - Do you have any final career advice? Michael replies, yes, “Follow your likes, your inclinations, and your temperament.” “Don’t struggle against the current. Take note of what you are thinking and feeling.” Do what interests you. But, be sure to challenge yourself and do something a little different every now and again. Don’t be afraid to contact people irrespective of how prestigious they are or how busy you think they are. Get in touch with someone who interests you to ask for advice and ask questions. When you do that, you trigger reflection in them. Michael finds answering people’s questions helps him to learn. Phil finished the podcast by asking Michael how people could get in touch with him (details below). BEST MOMENTS: (2.33) Michael – I agree with Alan Cooper who suggested – “Every bit of improvement in the world, and in the way things happen, starts with grumpiness, starts with dissatisfaction with the state of things.” (4.19) Michael – “Your reputation is the only thing. It’s important to have a reputation for excellence, for good work for competency and for ethics.” (9.19) Michael – “A focus on the problem rather than a focus on success is the path to success. We become successful by recognizing things that we have to fix things that we have to get better at things that we are not as good as it could be.” (10.04) Michael – “Turning $1 into $2 is practically impossible. But turning a million dollars into $2 million is practically inevitable.” (18.26) Michael – “I found it really interesting to see how little tiny decisions on little tiny pieces of data can allow us to see a video or be interviewed over a long distance.” (19.38) Michael – “When you write a CV, the CV must be focused on solving the problem for the hiring manager.” CONTACT MICHAEL BOLTON: Website: www.developsense.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-bolton-08847/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/michaelbolton @MichaelBolton Email: michael@developsense.com Skype: michael.a.bolton

Balancing out these moments of success, Michael was banned from his high school graduation for “the balloon incident,” was sued by one of his Law School lecturers for defamation, and his first published piece of writing was a Mills & Boone short story called “The Male Delivery.” Michael left Australia 25 years ago to be a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where his only significant achievement was falling in love with a Canadian, which is why he now lives in Toronto, having spent time in London and Boston. He was the first Canadian Coach of the Year.   Michael explains why the manager only needs 7 good questions that transforms your leadership game on his book, The Coaching Habit.   “For the simplicity on this side of complexity, I wouldn't give you a fig. But for the simplicity on the other side of complexity, for that I would give you anything I have.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. For the teachings that Michael does, he tries to strive for that simplicity and he thinks that so often we over complicate things. Michael is all about making things simple, practical and doable. For normal people, coaching is a little but weird because some people are being traumatized by their coaches. For Michael, coaching is a very powerful leadership behavior to get the best out of people, get the best out of yourself and to have more impact in the work that you are doing. Part of the question that he usually ask is what is the least he can teach people and what is the least people need to have the most impact into the work they need.   “Spend less time asking people what to do and more times asking good questions.”   If you interact with other human beings in your life learning to be more coach-like which in the end is, can you beat yourself a little bit longer? Can you rush for action and give advice a little bit more slowly? Being a coach-like can be a little bit different for everybody.   “Most of us are advice giving maniacs”   Michael discovered that people advice is not nearly as good as they think it is because. The advice they have isn't solving the right problem The advice they have isn't that good of a solution People preferred to figure this stuff out themselves and come up with their own ideas and their own advice   Michael also talked about the And what else...   And what else, comes with an insight that a person answer to your first question is never there only answer and it rarely gets the best to answer. And what else is also a great management tool if you're going to slow down the rush to advice, asking and what else is a way of controlling your advice monster who is waiting for a leap of action that is trying to solve the problem and save the day. And you want to return this advice monster.   If you are saying yes to this, what are you saying no to? Michael’s strategy question in the book says: When you think about innovation and you think about the challenges that brings with it so much of what great innovation is about and being clear to what the no's are so you can say yes to the stuff that really matters. Every time you say yes you are rolling out a bunch of things that you can do instead of finding the things that you really want to do. What is ghost coaching (Coaching the Ghost) The difference between bad, good and great work and how to leverage it The benefits about giving less advice and staying curios longer   Should you get a coach when you are stuck in a rut? Michael says that you should not get a coach immediately. If getting a coach works for you financially and how will you can commit, that would be really powerful. But there are also passive voice that you can get unstuck.   Tips on how to get unstuck. An accountability partner Hire a coach Read a book   I have made worksheet to help you get unstuck in a rut. ABOUT MIKE DEANGELO Michael DeAngelo has more ambition than he knows what to do with. When he was seven or eight years old, he determined right then and there that he wanted to be a “software engineer.” That was his pretentious way of saying that he wanted to make videogames. He always created worlds in his head or on paper. Michael went through school with massive pads of graph paper and made labyrinths for RPGs that never saw the light of day. He created sprawling game worlds that never really took off because he instantly gravitated to the next thing. It never occurred to him that writing was something that he could ever be good at. Even if you’re one of the people who think that the last statement might be true, the Tellest series has grown to be something that he couldn’t leave behind. Tons of people try their hands at penning a novel. Sometimes it’s because they want to try and get an unexpected paycheck. Sometimes it’s because they’re bored. Ultimately, if and when sales are poor or reviews are worse, there is a part of them that burns up and cracks, blowing away like ashes on the cherry of a cigarette. For Michael, the Tellest books are almost like people he’s met. He likes to think of the novels that he’s written as stories that have already been told but only to him. Sometimes co-host, Mike DeAngelo, has designed a card game—Quantum Quest! And we played it LIVE on Kickstarter... which we nabbed the audio from to present to you! He feels it is his duty to tell those tales, even if only a handful of people enjoy reading them. ABOUT QUANTUM QUEST Dive into a dungeon with a party of adventurers. The Washington Post reported today that President Trump referred to African countries and Haiti as “sh*tholes" in a meeting with lawmakers. For Michael and Rick, this marks the lowest moment of the administration. Michael said the country has to send the president a message. “This is not the America we live in. This is not the leadership we want.” The guys discuss the president’s rhetoric and the message it sends to allies in Africa and around the world. Cristiano Lima, a breaking news reporter for Politico, talks about President Trump declining to commit to an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller.

Generous | Part 7 | Michael looks at the Old Testament, at the House of Saul and the relationship between Saul and David. Michael looks at how their relationship went from Friendship to Hostility but with God back to friendship. God challenges us to do amazing things, for Saul it was to change from hatred and jealousy to caring. Michael speaks about fear in his own life and how God delivered an amazing gift and encouragement to help him overcome his fear. For Michael there had to be a pivotal change in his life to make him change and when that happened it allowed God to take him on an amazing journey. God wants to restore us and for us to restore others, to live a life of all out generosity & compassion that reaches out to the broken and needy. It is not a collection of acts but a lifestyle.

Founder and head of SocialMediaExaminer.com, and author of the industry-changing book, “Launch”, Michael Stelzner welcomes us in his office for some heavy tips and Q&A on how to start your business and follow your passion.   Right off the bat while touring Michael’s office we talk headlines and he shares his “go-to” formula for strong headlines which is sticking with a “How to” (solution based) headline, or numbers, such as “6 Ways to Grow Your Twitter Followers”.   From there, Michael talks about his avatar, Scout.  Michael identified early on that almost nobody in the social media space had an avatar, so he wanted to create a little cartoon character that would be recognizable and associated with his brand.   Next, Michael touches on one of the keys to his content strategy, which is having guest bloggers (experts) provide content for his blog.  It is a brilliant model that allows him to bring the best of the best to his audience through curating the top authorities on various topics.   Another substantial piece to Michael’s content strategy was the type and length of the blog posts he would publish.  Rather than sticking to short 300 word articles, he would insist on 1,000-word (or more) articles that dove deep into “how to” subjects.   It was the quality of these articles that propelled him to build a list of over 10,000 email subscribers in less than 6 months.   This number happened to be very pivotal to his overall strategy as he had decided that he was not going to monetize his content and list with marketing messages until it had reached 10,000 subscribers.   This ended up being a distinctive differentiation strategy for his site, and contributed massively to his growth.   When it comes to his traffic strategy, Michael optimizes for people first.  Meaning, making sure his content is pleasing, consumable, and, of course, highly “shareable”.     However, SEO is a huge part of their traffic strategy, and Michael shares some fantastic tips and tools.     For keyword research, check out the tool SEMrush.  And, for blog post search engine optimization, the WordPress plugin “Yoast” is awesome!  From there, make sure you run your site through Google’s free “Webmaster Tools” to identify issues you may not be aware of.  Another great tip is to make sure you claim your page on Google Plus!   From there Michael dishes on Social optimization!     One of his favorite tools is a plugin called DiggDigg, which is a floating sidebar that helps earn social shares.  Another great tip is a plugin called JM Twitter Cards, which allows your posts to appear with a headline, image, and expanded text in Twitter.  For Facebook, the favorite is back to the Yoast plugin to make sure you’re optimizing your images and your description for Facebook through the Social aspects of that plugin!   Next, we talk monetization, which Michael does primarily through live events.   His first piece of advice, which is along the lines of make good choices and proceed with caution is, “Don’t quit your day job.”  That doesn’t mean don’t try to create an online business or don’t try to become an entrepreneur.  What it means is sometimes things take a little time to do correctly, so allow yourself that time.   For Michael, his background included live events, so that was a natural monetization strategy for him.  But, his next piece of advice was super important to adhere to, which was don’t always try to copy what’s working for someone else, because it may not work as well for you.  If speaking is not your thing, then chances are there are going to be other revenue generating avenues that are going to work better for you and you’ll enjoy more.   When asked the question, “What do you love doing the most in the business?”, without hesitation, Michael pointed to podcasting and the ability to go deep and create dynamic content and interviews with people.   Going forward, one of the projects Michael is most excited about is the site he created called MyKidsAdventures.com, which is all about empowering busy parents to spend more time with their kids.   And, just before wrapping up, Michael leaves us with this final thought…   “Realize that everyone who you look up to and everyone who has a platform started where you are now.  With nothing.  With an idea.  So, don’t let that idea pass you by.  Make sure you give it a try.  Because, if you don’t you’ll never know what you missed, so just go for it!”   Great advice, Michael!   Make sure you check out Michael’s podcast, “Social Media Marketing”, his site, SocialMediaExaminer.com, if you’re a parent, his new site, MyKidsAdventures.com, and head over to LifeOnFire.com/41 to get all of the resources Michael mentioned throughout this episode!    Blown away by this interview?!!  If so, please give us a 5-star rating and write us a review in iTunes telling us what you love about Life on Fire TV!   Thanks so much for subscribing!  YOU are OUR passion!
