RE 555: Don't Drink the Kool-Aid

Today we have Camille. She's 36 years old, from Coeur d 'Alene, Idaho, and she took her last drink on August 22nd, 2024.   This episode brought to you by Better Help – 10% off of your first month #sponsored   Café RE   [04:26] Paul introduces Camille:   Corrine is 36 years old and lives in Coeur d'Alene, ID with her husband and two young children. For fun they enjoy spending time with friends in their community and spending time outside.   Camille says her father got sober when he was 24 and while growing up, she wasn't told that she couldn't drink but her dad gave her things to look out for. She experimented with alcohol in her teens while partying with friends. When she was 18, she began to be very active with church and started dating her now husband.   Camille and her husband got married when she was 21 and she says her drinking ramped up in her mid-twenties. They enjoyed hosting get-togethers with friends and neighbors. Camille says that over time she began to lose the “on/off switch”. She and her husband were still active in church, so Camille found herself living a secretive double life.   Camille was able to quit drinking both times she was pregnant but would always be ready to start back after giving birth. When her first child was five months old, Camille began drinking boxed wine in an effort to believe that she wasn't drinking as much as she was. Not long after this, she began having alcohol in multiple locations so she could rotate through it.   Working as a hairstylist and taking on more responsibility at church found Camille more exhausted and feeling more shame about her drinking. She began to feel like God was asking her to hand her problem over. She was at the point where she was disgusted with how she looked and felt and tired of the anxiety and mental gymnastics surrounding her drinking.   Camille's husband never questioned her drinking, and she was scared to bring it up. When he decided to quit drinking in solidarity with a friend, Camille decided to join them a few weeks later.   The first two weeks, Camille says she was white knuckling. She tried to distract herself as much as possible. She started making jewelry, exercising, listening to podcasts and reading quit lit. She tried listening to This Naked Mind again and identified with a lot of things.   Camille began to burn ships with her friends and fellow church members and learned she was not alone. Her parents were very supportive when she shared with them as well. After the first two weeks, Camille began to reap the benefits of an alcohol-free life. She says she now feels free and fully present with the people that matter.   [47:39] Thoughts from Paul:   This is an intro that Paul says he has been wanting to do for a while but has shied away because the subject matter can be triggering for some, including himself. Politics, news, the state of the US, the state of the world. The message he wants to convey is DO NOT DRINK THE KOOL-AID.   The news, social media, politicians and all of the algorithms on the internet are trying to put you in a fearful state. They have learned that fear and fake news hold your attention longer, that they can control you better, and they make more money on advertisements, etc.   One thing on the news that we see is doom and gloom, but Paul shares that he does not see that in real life. He doesn't want to downplay things, but things aren't nearly as bad as the news wants you to think. We need to start choosing where to put our attention. We are almost enabling addicts who are addicted to power by giving them our attention.   Go meet you neighbor, learn the names of birds in your yard, and be kind to yourself. Humans are going through a lot of change at the moment. And change is hard. We're going to be just fine.      Recovery Elevator Rule 22, let's lighten up and not take ourselves too seriously. I love you guys.   RE on Instagram Recovery Elevator YouTube Sobriety Tracker iTunes

Host Jeff opens this Sunday broadcast with the show's signature mix of Scripture and geopolitical analysis — starting with the Word on Word game (Psalm 4:8 vs. Isaiah 55:6) and moving quickly into a wide‑ranging briefing on domestic and international developments. He explains why a single photo from a state visit and repeated uses of the phrase "his excellency" matter to his broader theory about shifting authority and sovereignty. Jeff dissects a purported "Declaration of Authority and Summons" that circulated ahead of a high‑profile meeting of military leaders, calling attention to unusual language such as "the United States for America" and "His Excellency of the Western Kingdom." He connects that document to recent court rulings, the government shutdown, and personnel changes at the top of the military and federal agencies — raising questions about legal authority, Navy JAGs in Washington, tribunal activity, and the reach of executive power. The episode also surveys global flashpoints: a controversial gun buyback and speech‑restriction measures in Canada, reports of legal and cultural shifts in the UK and across Europe, and the spread of government digital ID programs. Jeff ties these developments into a broader theme that some governments are showing their hand, and he explains how Russia, NATO, and other actors factor into the current geopolitical chessboard. Israel receives extended attention: Jeff describes Trump's treatment of Benjamin Netanyahu, the growing two‑state discussion, mass protests inside Israel, and intelligence claims that raise the risk of escalatory moves against Iran. He offers a speculative scenario — including the possibility of a false‑flag event or an attack near the Temple Mount — while framing it as one of several outcomes to watch as Israeli politics and regional alliances shift. As a counterpoint to fear and sensationalism, Jeff plays a clip from comedian Jim Brewer about how nonstop media coverage "steals your energy," ramps up fear, and drives people away from faith. Jeff endorses that message and emphasizes worship, prayer, and spiritual readiness as defensive tools: "peace through victory" is his refrain, urging listeners to don the armor of God, preserve their spiritual energy, and stay battle‑ready in troubled times. Key takeaways: close attention to military and executive moves in Washington, fast‑moving geopolitical developments (especially involving Israel and Western allies), and the episode's central pastoral call — resist fear, protect your moral and spiritual energy, and rely on worship and faith as the primary response. Two Freedoms and Two Americas: Barry Goldwater and Martin Luther King's Incompatible Versions of Liberty

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 5, 2025 53:32

What unites America, it used to be said, is a common commitment to “freedom”. But in our disunited times, it's worth remembering that two incompatible versions of freedom have actually divided rather than brought the United States together. As the historian Nicholas Buccola notes in his intriguing new book One Man's Freedom, these competing freedoms are represented in the thinking of the two icons of modern American conservatism and liberalism: Barry Goldwater and Martin Luther King. For Goldwater, freedom meant liberation from government interference—the right to be left alone to pursue economic success without federal meddling. For King, it meant empowerment—ensuring people had genuine capacity to participate fully in society. And as Buccola demonstrates, these competing visions persist in today's debates over everything from healthcare to voting rights. When conservatives champion ‘medical freedom' to refuse vaccines while liberals demand ‘reproductive freedom' through government-protected abortion access, they're not just disagreeing on policy—they're wielding incompatible definitions of freedom itself. When some see voter ID laws as protecting electoral freedom while others view them as destroying it, they're replaying the Goldwater-King divide: Is freedom merely the absence of federal interference, or does it require active measures to ensure everyone can meaningfully participate? Two freedoms, two Americas—no wonder the United States now feels so bitterly divided. 1. Freedom Isn't One ThingGoldwater championed “negative freedom” (freedom from government interference), while King advocated “positive freedom” (empowerment to actually participate in society). Both men claimed to seek “authentic liberalism,” but their visions were fundamentally incompatible. You can't just say you're “for freedom” without specifying which kind.2. Goldwater's Consequential SilenceThroughout his career, Goldwater had numerous opportunities to speak out on civil rights from his libertarian perspective but repeatedly chose silence. His refusal to use what King called “the moral power” of leadership to support racial justice—even while claiming personal opposition to segregation—helped set a pattern for the modern conservative movement's approach to race.3. The 1964 Pivot PointThe 1964 Republican Convention was a watershed moment when race and “extremism” tore the party apart. When Goldwater sided with the far right and voted against the Civil Rights Act in the name of “freedom,” it drove Black Republicans like George Parker from the party and reshaped American political coalitions in ways that persist today.4. Economics Was Central to the DivideKing saw Goldwater's economic philosophy as almost as dangerous as his stance on civil rights. While Goldwater focused on protecting economic freedom from “big government,” King advocated for an economic bill of rights that would address inequality across racial lines. This wasn't just about race—it was about whether economic empowerment is necessary for genuine freedom.5. These Divisions Persist in 2025The Goldwater-King debate isn't historical trivia. Today's arguments about the role of government, economic inequality, and racial justice still break along these same philosophical lines. When politicians invoke “freedom,” they're usually choosing sides in this 60-year-old debate without acknowledging that their opponents are using the same word to mean something entirely different.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. MALAYSIA: Government Denies Christian Converts Changed ID Cards

In Malaysia, every citizen carries an ID card that includes religion; every person is classified as either “Muslim” or “Non-Muslim.” The Malaysian constitution promises religious freedom and the right to choose one's religion. So what happens if a citizen changes their faith? “Brother Samuel” will answer that question this week on VOM Radio. Born into a Muslim family, he came to know that Jesus was the Son of God, then chose to leave Islam behind to follow Christ. At first, he kept his newfound faith quiet, knowing that being publicly identified as a follower of Jesus could bring all kinds of trouble. But as he grew in faith, he felt convicted about his silence. Jesus had died for him. How could he be unwilling even to acknowledge Christ? Learning of his conversion, Samuel's family encouraged him to dive more deeply into Islamic training and activities. Wanting to honor his father and his family, Samuel agreed to attend Islamic classes. But instead of bringing him back to Mohammed, the training forced him to become more rooted in Biblical truth and more capable at explaining and defending Christian doctrines. In 2018, Samuel began the process of applying for a new national ID card, changing his religion from “Muslim” to “non-Muslim.” Seven years later, his court case is still dragging on. While the most famous case of Christian persecution in Malaysia is the abduction of Pastor Raymond Koh, Samuel says there are hundreds of Christians right now in the same situation he's in: trying to get the government to issue them new ID cards that accurately reflect their faith. Please pray this week for Samuel and for other Christians in Malaysia. Next month is the International Day of Prayer for Persecuted Christians (IDOP). The Voice of the Martyrs has resources to help you and your church pray for persecuted Christians on November 2 and throughout the year, including a new film telling the story of ongoing persecution in Democratic Republic of Congo. HYUNDAI SEPTEMBER SALES SEE EV GROWTH, IONIQ 5 RECORDS Hyundai posted a 14% rise in U.S. sales in September 2025, with the IONIQ 5 achieving a September record and EV sales up 153% year-over-year. The company reaffirmed its commitment to affordable, quality EVs and continues to increase retail sales and market share regardless of expiring incentives. VOLKSWAGEN U.S. EV SALES RISE IN Q3 2025 Volkswagen saw its U.S. EV sales rise 230% in Q3 2025 compared to the previous year, with the ID.4 and new ID. Buzz accounting for 17% of the brand's total American sales. The ID.4 grew sales by 176%, and Q3 marked the strongest year-over-year jump for any brand. KIA EV3 TOPS 75,000 GLOBAL SALES Kia's compact EV3 has sold over 75,000 units globally this year, topping EV sales in the UK and South Korea as it expands into Europe, Australia, and other regions. With competitive pricing and two battery options offering up to 375 miles of range, the EV3 is expected to reach the U.S. in 2026. TESLA SUPERCHARGER NETWORK SETS QUARTERLY RECORD FOR NEW STALLS Tesla installed 4,000 new Supercharger stalls worldwide in Q3 2025, its largest quarterly increase, and debuted a 500 kW V4 site in California. Charging demand climbed, with 54 million sessions and 1.8 TWh delivered, helping customers avoid 222.5 million gallons of petrol. SHANGHAI FACTORY ADDS FRONT BUMPER CAMERA TO TESLA MODEL 3 Tesla's Shanghai-built Model 3 now features a front bumper camera and a physical turn signal stalk, addressing driver assistance and low-speed maneuvering needs. These updates are expected to soon roll out to North America and Europe, although retrofits for existing vehicles are not yet confirmed. FIREFLY RIGHT‑HAND DRIVE SPOTTED IN UK Nio's Firefly sub-brand was seen in a right-hand drive layout in the UK, signaling its impending expansion to markets such as the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Firefly deliveries began in Europe this August and will continue to roll out across other European countries in the coming months. NISSAN ADDS PLUG&CHARGE VIA ELECTRIFY AMERICA Nissan and Electrify America have partnered to launch Plug&Charge capability, debuting with the 2026 Nissan LEAF and expanding to additional models later. This technology will allow Nissan EVs to automatically authenticate and pay for charging, enhancing driver convenience at compatible stations. E.ON PILOTS TRUCK CHARGING RESERVATION SYSTEM E.ON is piloting a reservation system for electric truck charging, enabling drivers and logistics companies to schedule and guarantee charging stops in advance via a web app. The program starts at select sites, seeking to address planning and reliability needs for commercial EV fleets. IRELAND REACHES 195,000 EVS TARGET Ireland hit its end-2025 target of 195,000 electric vehicles ahead of schedule, with EVs now making up 18.4% of new car registrations so far this year. Government incentives and infrastructure investment have accelerated adoption and should foster a robust used EV market.

Andy Schectman returns to the Friday Night Economic Review. First we discuss the biometric ID program recently rolled out in Vietnam and reports that 86 million “non-compliant” bank accounts were shut down. We talk plainly about what that means — who gains power, who loses freedom, and how ID systems plus payment rails can be used to enforce compliance. Vietnam is a blue print for what will be rolled out everywhere. Then we step back into the long view with Strauss & Howe's Fourth Turning — the idea that nations cycle through seasons and we're now in the last stage marked by decadence and decay.

The world is a dumpster fire, confirmed. Following California's landmark AI safety bill SB 53, the head of Nvidia is allegedly "quaking in his boots"—which is a good sign, unlike the news that the "Nirvana Baby" Spencer Elden's lawsuit was finally dismissed. Meanwhile, corporate America continues its pivot to chaos: Spotify shuffled its execs, Meta is charging UK users for ad-free Facebook and Instagram, and the UK is introducing digital ID cards (Hello, Mark of the Beast). The entire internet is now dominated by bots, proving the Cracker Barrel logo outrage was manufactured, a fact that's somehow less depressing than the FCC accidentally leaking iPhone schematics. Naturally, Alphabet just paid $22 million to settle President Trump's YouTube lawsuit, confirming that legal threats are the new VC funding. Disney is panicking over an "AI Actress," sending cease and desist letters to Character.AI, while OpenAI rolls out its new Sora app and ChatGPT's ability to buy things for you, proving it's determined to turn the internet into one seamless, copyright-infringing shopping mall, and it's now worth more than Elon Musk's SpaceX.The ensuing boredom demands new media, though the pacing is terrible in everything: Slow Horses Season 5 and Human: Neanderthal Encounters are great, but even the original Matrix and Frankenstein trailer (by Guillermo del Toro) feel slow, confirming the Princess Bride litmus test. MXV's Riot Fest photos were rad, and Disney lost 1.7M subs after suspending Kimmel, which is why YouTube Music is testing AI hosts (who will only be wrong), and the Pivot Tour is happening. Our Apps & Doohickeys department confirms security is an afterthought: macOS 26 unlocked the Journal app, but the smart glasses race is fully on, and Logitech's new keyboard can be recharged by any light (finally, tech that works!). Amazon Fire TV is expected to ditch Android for Linux, Meta introduced the AI-filled Vibes feed, and Tile trackers were found to have a stalking flaw—a fact only slightly more depressing than the swift failure of the Neon call-recording app and the continued existence of the Comet browser. Finally, The Dark Side with Dave celebrated the low-budget charm of Blue Thunder and the necessity of Disney Park Ride Overlays, while Dave embarked on his quest to unbox the Home Depot R2D2. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

The beginning of Parashat Ha'azinu speaks about the kindnesses that Hashem did for Am Yisrael after they left Mitzrayim. He surrounded them with His Clouds of Glory in the desert. He then brought them into Eretz Yisrael and gave them the most delicious fruits to eat. Hashem took care of them physically in every way. But then the pasuk rebukes the people for not showing the proper gratitude. Instead of becoming more devoted to Hashem, they became worse. The best way to serve Hashem is with feelings of gratitude. We must feel gratitude even for the smallest blessings—how much more so for the countless blessings that Hashem gives us every single day. Even if a person received only a small gift, he is obligated to feel hakarat hatov. Rabbi Menashe Reizman told a story that was related by Rabbi Naftali Halberstam, which happened to him personally. In 1947, while he was learning in a yeshiva in Israel, there was a draft for the army. One day a military jeep pulled up and soldiers demanded their ID cards. Rabbi Naftali and two of his friends did not have any documents of exemption and were arrested. Eventually, they were brought to trial. When the names of the boys were called out before the judge, they announced, "Naftali Halberstam." The judge trembled, turned angrily toward the police, and shouted, "You brought this lunatic here? Send him and his friends away immediately!" Just like that, the boys received their release papers. Years later, Rabbi Naftali was walking down the street and suddenly recognized that judge. He reminded him of what he had done years before and asked his name so he could show proper hakarat hatov. The judge said, "You think you know about gratitude? I'll tell you what gratitude is." He then recalled a story about his father, whom we'll call Yehuda. Yehuda had moved to Israel but was not fond of the charedim. One day a great rebbe came to town and everyone went to get a blessing. Yehuda had no interest, but his friends persuaded him to come along. When it was his turn, the gabbai told him to write down a request and leave a small donation. Yehuda put down two small coins and said he had no requests. The rebbe blessed him, and he left. That year, the rebbe passed away. A few months later, Yehuda saw the rebbe in a dream. The rebbe said, "You showed me kindness by giving me two coins. I have come back to repay you by telling you that both your Rashi and Rabbeinu Tam tefillin are pasul." At first, Yehuda dismissed the dream, but his friends convinced him it couldn't hurt to check. He did, and found that indeed both pairs of tefillin were completely pasul. Yehuda later said, "Years have passed, but that dream saved me from being someone who never wore kosher tefillin." The judge concluded, "That was my father's story. When I heard your name in court, 'Halberstam,' I immediately remembered that rebbe, Rabbi Halberstam of Shinova. I trembled, and I released you at once, pretending you were a lunatic. It was part of the chain of gratitude from the rebbe, who I knew would want you released." If Hashem allowed a rabbi to appear in a dream to repay gratitude for two small coins, imagine how much hakarat hatov we owe Hashem for everything He gives us. Hashem showers us with infinite kindness, and thoughtful people recognize it. Rabbi Avigdor Miller was a master of hakarat hatov. He opened our eyes to see the endless chasadim that Hashem does for us. One of his famous examples was the peel of an apple. Once the peel is removed, the apple rots quickly. Hashem created the peel to keep the apple fresh longer than any man-made container. The apple is full of liquid, and to keep the juices from seeping out, Hashem designed the peel with a slight layer of oil. The peel also prevents rainwater from soaking into the fruit while it is still on the tree. The peel acts as a sign of readiness: its colors shift—red, green, yellow—to signal when the fruit is sweet and edible. Unlike people, whose outward garments often conceal what lies within, the peel truthfully reveals the fruit's state. Hashem even made the peel attractive and fragrant to make the apple more appealing. How does all that sweetness enter the fruit? Through the thin brown stem at the top. From mud and rain below and sunshine absorbed by the leaves, everything passes through that tiny channel into the fruit. No human could design such a delicate conduit. Yet Hashem uses it to bring forth nourishment and delight. Inside, the juice is distributed evenly, refreshing without spilling. The apple can be sliced neatly without mess. When one finishes eating, there is a "coupon" inside for countless more apples—the seeds. It's like a chocolate bar that comes with a voucher for another bar and another, endlessly. Each apple contains the potential for thousands more. Hashem arranged that the flesh around the seeds be tough and inedible, so they would be preserved. Each seed lies in its own perfectly designed chamber, ready to grow into a new tree. This is just part of the kindness contained in one apple. Hashem designed the entire world for our benefit. It is incumbent upon us to recognize this, and to serve Him happily with gratitude, showing that we are capable of being the people He created us to be. Shabbat Shalom.

This messenger explains the fierce resistance of the Prince of Persia—a demonic power—before the archangel Michael arrives to fight alongside him. This chapter exposes the reality of angels, demons, and spiritual warfare shaping the course of history. It ties directly to the end times, the book of Revelation, and the signs of the times, showing how God's prophetic plan unfolds both on earth and in the unseen realm.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stepping away from our studio setting, we're bringing you a special "speedcast" from the bustling Abilities Expo in Chicago where we met Mikaylah, a remarkable young woman navigating life with dystonic cerebral palsy while pursuing her dreams.Mikaylah, a creative writing major at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, offers a candid glimpse into her world. She manages her condition with a deep brain stimulator (a device similar to a pacemaker but connected to her brain) and medication regimens. What stands out immediately is her matter-of-fact approach to these medical realities – they're simply part of her daily experience, not limitations that define her potential. When our conversation turns to literature, Mikaylah's passion ignites. She recommends "Unmasked" by Kendra Merritt, praising how the author authentically incorporates disability into fantasy fiction. This representation matters deeply to Mikaylah's, who notes the scarcity of disabled characters in the books she encountered growing up. Now, she's crafting her own stories, adding her voice to this essential narrative space. The most revealing moment comes when she shares a troubling high school incident – administrators placed her service dog's photo on her student ID instead of her own picture, a dehumanizing error that speaks volumes about how society often fails to see disabled individuals as complete persons.Michaela's parting wisdom resonates deeply: "Just keep living. Life goes on. Life is precious. You only get one." On the surface, it seems like a slam dunk—so many witnesses  claiming they saw Oswald flee the scene. But dig deeper, and the cracks appear. Major evidentiary red flags that would tank this in any courtroom: shaky timelines, conflicting descriptions, dubious influences on  police lineups that was made even  worse by a  media frenzy. Timing alone raises alarms—could Oswald even have made it there from Dealey Plaza in under 35 minutes, navigating  buses, negotiating cabs, and making the rest of the way  on foot...could he really have made all the way to 10th and Patton in time to commit the Murder?  And here's the real mind-bender: How do so many eyes lock on one man, yet so few deliver a rock-solid ID? Did they truly see Oswald... or just what the narrative needed them to see? This whole puzzle is confounding, a tangle of human memory and high-stakes history. That's why when it came to sorting through all these witnesses…I knew we needed an expert who lives and breathes this case. Enter Matt Douthit, Dallas native, and one of the sharpest JFK assassination researchers out there  when it comes to the evidence related to the Tippit witnesses. He's debated the details, walked the crime scene, and uncovered angles that flip the script. We sat down with Matt for over three  hours, dissecting testimonies, timelines, and those pesky witness inconsistencies —and now, we're breaking it into four gripping mini-episodes, each 30 to 40 minutes long. These videos pair perfectly with our audio series. In the You Tube video series opener, Matt takes us on a fascinating journey as he begins to  map  the witness landscape—who saw what, when, and why it matters. And some gaping holes in the evidence begin to appear. Stick around on You Tube  as we  analyze the witnesses and their testimony one by one.  all four episodes are full of things you might not ever heard about the Tippit case. Whether you know a lot about this case or you are just getting started. This is where the Tippit story gets real.  And when you are done...be sure to come back here and listen to the rest of the Tippit murder series at your favorite audio podcast outlet. There's lots more to come...oh...and please do subscribe to both the audio podcast  and the You Tube channel if you haven't already done so.
