Steve Monaghan flips the script on innovation culture: experience isn't a relic—it's a strategic edge. As General Partner at FinMir.ai, Limited Partner at True Global Ventures, Independent Non-Executive Director at RAK Bank, and former Chief Digital Officer at both AIA and DBS Bank, Steve brings a cross-industry view forged through decades of deep transformation. From aviation to fintech to AI, he shows how age fuels better questions, sharper pattern recognition, and global insight in a world obsessed with novelty. Whether he's building Asia's first unicorn or designing systems that could restructure entire economies, Steve makes one thing clear: for Gen Xers tired of being underestimated, age isn't a liability—it's leverage.>>Built to Learn, Not to Fit“I wasn't hired for my experience. I was hired for the questions I knew how to ask.”Steve's journey—from pilot to pricing guru to product architect—was never about titles. It was about learning faster than the system could teach him.>>From N-O to K-N-O-W“People don't fear change. They fear not understanding it.”Steve shares his framework for flipping resistance into insight. At DBS, it became a model: learning, venturing, capital. The goal? Turn skeptics into innovators.>>Legacy Is Not a Headline“This isn't my next startup. It's my swing-for-the-fences play.”Steve's current project could restructure economies by eliminating capital inefficiencies in payroll and supply chains. It's big, bold—and designed to help the people most hurt by broken systems.>>The Advantage of Age in the Age of AI“Older workers know how to ask better questions. That's the advantage.”Forget the ageist myth. Steve explains why mature employees are becoming AI's secret weapon—and why experience, not just coding, is the multiplier.>>Mental Health Is Not a Risk Factor—It's a Design Factor“You can't build resilient companies without resilient founders.”As an investor, Steve supports founders with integrity, grit, and humility. That includes stepping back when needed—and being asked, not judged, for how you feel._________________________Connect with Us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Steve Monaghan  --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. In this conversation, Fiona, a Managing Director and Independent Non-Executive Director, discusses her experience as a working mother. She shares insights into her career path, the importance of role models, and the challenges of balancing work and family life. Fiona also reflects on attitudes towards pregnant women in the workplace and the changing role of fathers. She highlights the need for flexible parental leave options and the impact of parenting decisions such as having a nanny and choosing whether to breastfeed on returning to work. In this conversation, Fiona discusses various aspects of parenting, decision-making, vulnerability, and work-life balance. She emphasizes the importance of personal choice in parenting and advises that you are best placed to make decisions about your own family and that once a decision is made, be confident in sticking to it and ignore perceived judgment from others. She also reflects on the vulnerability experienced when returning to work after maternity leave and the need for support and understanding in the workplace. Fiona shares her experience of taking a role abroad and the challenges and rewards it brings to her family. Finally, she highlights the importance of appreciating individuals for their unique contributions and avoiding assumptions based on personal experiences.   Key takeaways The transition to parenthood is a unique journey for each individual, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Having a supportive network, including family and role models, can greatly influence a person's experience as a working parent. Attitudes towards pregnant women in the workplace have evolved, but there is still progress to be made in achieving gender equality and eliminating judgment. The role of fathers in parenting has become more prominent, with many dads taking on supportive and involved roles. Flexible parental leave options can benefit both parents and children, allowing for a better work-life balance. Parenting is a personal choice, and there is no right or wrong approach. It is important to respect and support each other's decisions. Returning to work after maternity leave can make individuals feel vulnerable. It is crucial for employers and colleagues to be understanding and provide support. Taking on new challenges, such as working abroad, can be a rewarding experience for both individuals and their families. It requires open communication and a willingness to adapt. Appreciating individuals for their unique contributions and avoiding assumptions based on personal experiences is essential for creating an inclusive and supportive work environment. Raised in the predominantly white and middle-class area of Pinner, Trevor was one of the few black students in his school. Trevor embraced this difference and saw it as an advantage. He became head boy at school and felt that being ‘different' meant being unique and he thrived in his school environment and early life.  In 1998, Trevor began his career at Ipsos in the post room, eventually becoming a graduate trainee. After that, he moved to Ernst and Young as a Business and Strategic Analyst, and then to AOL moving up to Head of Consumer Insights. In 2008, while backpacking up a mountain in Argentina, Trevor received a call from Facebook. He flew back for a 15-minute interview and, shortly after, had to cut his travels short in order to start his new role at Facebook a month later. During this time, Trevor met his mentor Blake, who has since guided him through his career. In 2012, Trevor experienced a major change when his mentor Blake called to tell him he had a new job role in New York and needed an answer that same day. Trevor returned to his desk and messaged his wife Ali, to which she replied, "I guess we're moving to New York then." Trevor is now Head of Marketing for Global Business Solutions, EU at TikTok.  Trevor is also an Independent Non-Executive Director on the operational board of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), he is a mentor to the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) team and is on the global advisory board of Soho House Group. Karuna Shinsho (ASIJ 1986) Jazz Vocalist Karuna Shinsho was born and raised in Hawaii until she moved to Tokyo in her early teens with her Japanese parents. After graduating from ASIJ in 1986, she attended Sophia University in Tokyo, where she majored in Political Science. While a junior at the university, she was chosen to anchor NHK Television's first English language news program, "Today's Japan", for broadcast in Japan and overseas. After four years at NHK, Karuna decided to deepen her knowledge of Japan and the world and attended Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs in New York. During that time, she also worked as a business anchor at NHK's New York Bureau. Upon attaining her Masters in International Affairs with a focus on East Asia, Karuna became an anchor/ correspondent for Asia Business News in Singapore. Then, after a brief stint in Tokyo working for NHK again, she moved to Hong Kong to work for CNN International as an anchor/correspondent where she earned several honors at the Asian Television Awards, including Best News Presenter. During her time in Hong Kong, Karuna got married and had her first son. She decided to quit journalism to be a stay-at-home mom. But television soon came calling again and she started anchoring a show on Asian affairs for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. After moving back to the United States, Karuna had her second son and joined her then diplomatic husband on his subsequent tours, which included the Philippines and Zimbabwe. During her time in Hong Kong, she had discovered yoga. She enjoyed the health and mental benefits of the practice and decided to become a yoga teacher. Back in Washington D.C. and going through a divorce, Karuna felt the urgent need to re-discover herself. She found that singing jazz helped her to heal and find joy again. Starting from jazz vocal workshops a few years ago to recently gigging locally and overseas, Karuna released her debut single "Smile" in November 2020. Her album, "To Love Again", will be out in 2021. Karuna understands that during challenging times, it can be difficult to be hopeful. But she believes that those moments are when one must be open to opportunities. One such opportunity presented itself when she was asked to join the Board as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Hong Kong-based investment holding company, Melco International Development Limited. She is also grateful to be able to pursue her passion for singing and to share it with willing listeners.
