As teenagers, The Wolf & Action Jackson dreamed of seeing Led Zeppelin live. However, the boys came of age in the 1980s after the band had broken up following the death of John Bonham. They were forced to live with ill-fated one-off reunions like Live Aid, Atlantic Records 40th and Knebworth. While they jumped at the chance to see Page/Plant in the mid-90s doing reworked versions of Zeppelin classics, they knew it would never be the same as a proper Led Zeppelin concert back in the day. On this 27th edition of First Concert Memories, the monthly sidecast from the hosts of The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, the boys are psyched to speak with Tony Michaelides. Tony had the rare privilege to see Led Zeppelin as a teenager in Manchester right before they blasted their way to superstardom. He tells the story of Robert Plant inviting him backstage to meet the rest of the guys in the band after the show and how having a signed Zeppelin poster made him the talk of the school yard that next week. However, this was actually just the beginning of Tony going backstage and interacting with artists as he would eventually have a 4 decade career in the music biz working with such luminaries as David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Steve Winwood and more. Tony has gone on to write books about his experience in the industry and hosts a podcast, Moments That Rock, which share some of his amazing stories from over the years. We may not always be able to keep him on point but we do talk a bit about the show, Zeppelin's place in history and how the industry has changed over the years. A fun chat with a true rock veteran! Before becoming a rock ‘n' roll frontman, Michael Des Barres was making his mark on screen—starring alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1967 classic To Sir, With Love. But it wasn't long before he traded the film set for the stage, forming glam rock outfit Silverhead in the early '70s before moving on to Detective, one of the few bands signed to Led Zeppelin's legendary Swan Song label. Hanging with Page, Plant, and Bonham was all part of the ride. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Michael shares his wild journey through music and acting—from those early days in London to writing one of the biggest songs of the 80s, to stepping in with The Power Station just days before Live Aid, and later, his unforgettable run as Murdoc on MacGyver. We also talk about his time with Pamela Des Barres, his show on Little Steven's Underground Garage, and the wise advice Sidney Poitier gave him early on. Michael Des Barres has lived a life where Hollywood and rock 'n roll collide—and he's got the stories to prove it.
"An Idiom is a group of words that suggest a meaning different than their specific words. Many of them come from the world of music and we have created a solid list. You will recognize a lot of them."
I'm excited to share Episode 50 of “Talking At The Diner!" I wanted to ask a heavy hitter to be my 50th guest on the show and when I think of heavy hitters in the Philadelphia music community, my guest really fits the bill not only in terms of his experiences and accomplishments, but he's literally a heavy hitter sitting behind the drum kit for Philly rock legends The Hooters. David Uosikkinen was raised in Levittown and came of age in the early days of FM rock radio. If you are of a certain age in this part of the world, you already know of the Hooters rise from local heroes to international touring artists. Numerous songs such as "All You Zombies," "And We Danced," "Day By Day," and "Hanging On A Heartbeat" were ubiquitous on radio stations like WMMR. As an aspiring musician growing up in Delaware, it was very motivating to see a Philadelphia band on MTV and performing at Live Aid. And even after 45 years as a band, the Hooters continue to tour and even release new music to this day.My personal connection with Dave Uosikkinen dates back to when I was in my early 20's fronting the Beat Clinic, the band that would eventually morph into the Caulfields. We were finalists in a national battle of the bands called the Energizer Rock 'n' Roll Challenge. David was a judge at the battle of the bands and although the Beat Clinic did not win, his words of encouragement to me in a my agony of defeat moment were inspirational to me and played a big part in motivating me to keep on pushing. In the years since to end of Covid, David has invited me to be part of In The Pocket, an all-star collective of musicians who honor the musical history of Philadelphia with tribute recordings and raucous shows. I was excited to get a chance to sit down with David at Minella's Diner in Wayne, PA for what ended up being an amazing conversation. We talked about his origin story as a musician, the genesis of the Hooters, and there's also an entertaining story about an encounter with Ace Frehley from Kiss. I am confident you will enjoy this episode!~ JKF

"This past 4th of July someone posted the Preamble and I wondered who the singer was. I watched a few more and wondered who they were. We will answer that today. We will play some of their Schoolhouse Rock song and then one of their singles. Plus we have some trivia about the show."
For decades, CBC's foreign correspondent Brian Stewart covered events that changed the world, from the famine in Ethiopia to brutal regimes in Latin America, to the fall of the Berlin Wall. But it was his reports from Ethiopia that galvanized Canadians to send humanitarian aid to the region, and led to Live Aid, one of the biggest charity concerts in history. Brian Stewart reflects on his remarkable career on the front lines of history.
"Long before American Idol and Americas Got Talent, there was Star Search. It was pretty schmaltzy but looking back, some of the biggest singers, actors and comedians got their big break on Star Search. We have grabbed as many examples as we could."
"Here is a game to play. Name as many two minute songs as you can following these rules. Only one song per group and you cannot name just punk songs. We then go one step farther and change the game to as many one minute songs as you can."
"A band named The Velvet Sundown had a hit a short while ago. The concern was that the band and the music were all fake. They were both fully AI generated. It is easier than you think. We have the story and some examples of when I did the same thing for an audience just to prove how easy it is to do."

"This is a fun parlor game. Name a band, a song by that band and then an album from that band that are all named exactly the same. Here is an example. Bad Company by Bad Company on the album Bad Company. There are many that are close but a true Trilogy is all three exactly the same."

Send us a textCrispian Mills stops by the show and we discuss, romanticism of the US and Rock n' Roll, Energy, death, knowledge and more.***Kula Shaker is Crispian Mills (guitar/vocals), Jay Darlington (Hammond organ), Alonza Bevan (bass) and Paul Winter-Hart (drums), the original line-up who regrouped for the first time since 1999's Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts.“We're not embarrassed to admit we still regard America as the Holy Land of Rock and Roll,” says guitarist/vocalist Crispian Mills of psychedelic post-Britpop band KULA SHAKER about their respect for North America. “It's a hopelessly romantic and rather old-fashioned view of the colonies, y'know, but, dash it all, we limeys just can't give it up!”To prove their adoration for the continent, the mesmeric band (consisting of all four original members) has added a handful of headline shows in addition to their dates supporting The Dandy Warhols on a North American tour, kicking off in Chicago, IL on Sept. 16th at Metro and working their way east to NYC's Irving Plaza on September 22ndbefore shooting off to Texas to support The Dandy Warhols for a round of dates on the Western side of the country. “We can't wait,” Mills says excitedly. “We've always dug the Dandy Warhols' tunes and their stonesy vibe, not to mention their work with the Velvets and their defining contribution to Pop Art. It's going to be a blast travelling around with them!”Combining their shimmery brand of shoegazey textures with an intoxicatingly expansive light show, Kula Shaker's live performances border on an immersive, trippy environment that meshes the visual and aural worlds into one kaleidoscopic event. “We're also pairing up with our friend Lance Gordon, AKA the Mad Alchemist, based in San Francisco,” explains Mills excitedly. “He does the world's best mind-melting liquid lightshow, so it's going to be a real psychedelic bunfight with all manner of mischief!”Hot off the road in the U.K. with Ocean Colour Scene, Kula Shaker has been teasing new music. Having released a new single “Charge of the Light Brigade” this past Spring that Jammerzine calls, “a retro-tastic stance in the stanza with bravado and flair from a set of truly original musicians” and Northern Exposure declares “more powerful than ever … a sonic power that's thrillingly new and yet, at the same time, contains an aura that is so nice and ageless,” the psycherock maestros are jazzed for a whole new chapter in their musical biography.“We tend to offer an assortment of live goodies,” he hints at the setlist. Songs like ‘Govinda,' ‘Tattva,' and ‘Hush' are always a joy because they never get tired. They just run and run, like good German motor cars. Must be some kind of enchantment. Whether old or new, the songs have to stand up and be counted. We have a brand new one called 'My Lucky Number' that tallies well in this context.”******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. This conversation began as a discussion about the Back To The Beginning concert. David and I recorded it on Monday afternoon, while he was doing some stuff in London. With the passing of Ozzy on Tuesday, I shelved it until now. David was kind enough to call in and talk about the Prince of Darkness on my show Tuesday, so I incorporated it into today's conversation. David talks about the big concert, comparing it to Live Aid, as far as feel and vibe. He told me about the best parts for him and his chance to play on the big stage. We also talked about Megadeth, and where he thinks the band peaked out and was hitting on all cylinders. It's been a crazy week, I hope you enjoy this chat! Meltdown

Still, songs She's Waiting and Forever Man turned out to be solid hits for Eric. Warner Brothers wanted the album to be a hit so they employed the hottest man in the business at the time, Phil Collins, to take Eric and his band down to Montserrat to put together a hit. However, Warner wasn't thrilled with the results so they had Eric come to LA to cover some songs written by Jerry Lynn Williams with some of the best session musicians of the day (and of all time). Eric's longtime guitar tech, Lee Dickson, has appeared on our show a couple of times before including on Ep 242 with Alan Hunter of MTV talking about Live Aid from Philadelphia. Lee gives us some color on how things went down in Montserrat, how a young producer almost ruined a six figure Martin guitar, how Sting popped up to say hello and contribute to the sessions and how Lee taught himself to swim while everyone else was at the beach. He also sheds some light on the LA sessions that Ted Templeman oversaw and how psyched Clapton was to work with some of the world's best session musicians like Steve Lukather, Greg Phillinganes and eventual member of his touring band, Nathan East. Lee tells a hilarious story about working with songwriter Jerry Lynn Williams and the character he was. Lee talks about the cool stuff they did making the album, we offer our track by track review including songs from the sessions that didn't make the album (one track made it into Back To The Future) and at the end he gives some inside information on what he does to make his artists sound incredible and life in rock n roll. It's a special edition we think you'll love. David Hepworth co-presented the BBC's coverage of the event, a role that gave him a ringside seat at Queen's celebrated performance and led to a sweary encounter with Bob Geldof. In conversation with Spencer Mizen, David shares his main recollections of the day and reveals why he believes, following 13 July 1985, the world of entertainment would never be the same again. In July 1985, music legends Mick Jagger and David Bowie were asked to perform a duet with a twist at Live Aid, the biggest concert in pop history. Utilising the latest satellite technology, Mick would perform on the US stage in Philadelphia, while David would perform on the UK stage at Wembley Stadium. As the technical issues were being discussed, it soon became obvious that a half-second delay in the link between cities would prevent the live performance from happening, so a recording was planned instead. A short list of songs was discussed before the duo finally settled on the Motown classic Dancing in the Street. Live Aid press officer Bernard Doherty tells Des Shaw how the duet and video were recorded in just 18 hours and became a highlight of the benefit concert on 13 July 1985.
