Claus Roxin nicht mehr als Mitherausgeber fungiert. Das Jahrbuch ist daher dem verdienstvollen langjährigen Vorsitzenden und späteren Ehrenvorsitzenden der KMG gewidmet. Die hier versammelten Beiträge zeigen ein weiteres Mal eindrücklich, dass nicht nur die Forschung zu Karl May weiterhin neue Erkenntnisse bringt, sondern dass auch die Grundlagenforschung noch nicht abgeschlossen ist.Martin Lowsky präsentiert erstmals eine vollständige deutsche Übersetzung der Briefe der französischen Übersetzerin Juliette Charoy an Karl May, und Joachim Biermann kommt zu neuen Ergebnissen bei der Suche nach Mays Vorlagen zu seiner Bearbeitung des ›Waldläufers‹ von Gabriel Ferry. Die Untersuchung von Spannung und Retardierung in Mays Werk durch Michael Andermatt zeigt, dass deren Verwendung auch in Abenteuerromanen keineswegs trivial ist. Helmut Schmiedt und Hartmut Vollmer gehen in ihren Aufsätzen Verbindungen zwischen Karl May und Thomas Mann bzw. Friedrich Schiller nach und verdeutlichen, dass die Grenze zwischen Hoch- und Trivialliteratur eine künstliche ist.Vier Beiträge widmen sich der Figurenebene. Laura Thüring analysiert in ihrem Beitrag die Figurenkonstitution des Westmanns Sam Hawkens, und Theresa Homm untersucht vergleichend Figurenkonstellationen bei Karl May und James Fenimore Cooper. Hay historias que el título mismo no deja lugar a dudas de lo que tratan y a dónde van. No hay espóiler alguno en decir que "Muerte en Venecia" (1912) es una obra sobre esa cita ineludible a la que todos nos enfrentamos. Hace 150 años que nació su autor, Thomas Mann (1875-1955), parte de una familia que ha hecho historia en Alemania como ejemplo de una clase social y una cultura cuya intelectualidad llega una decadencia tal, que acaba en el nazismo. En Thomas se da la tensión también entre la madre católica de origen brasileño y el padre protestante luterano, su atracción por el sur y la racionalidad germana, pero también su orientación homosexual, nunca practicada. Como en todos sus libros, "Muerte en Venecia" tiene una dimensión alegórica y simbólica, que uno no capta si se queda simplemente con la historia de este hombre que se va a Venecia y se queda prendado de un muchacho, para encontrar la muerte. Como novela intelectual, los pensamientos del personaje no dejan lugar a dudas que el chico no es más un símbolo de la belleza y el escritor del arte que te lleva a la destrucción. El director italiano Luchino Visconti lo lleva al cine en 1971 en una fiel versión, que cambia sólo la literatura por la música en la ocupación del protagonista. La quinta y tercera sinfonía de Mahler llenan la película con imágenes de una Venecia invernal, para ilustrar una historias donde hasta las góndolas se convierten en ataúdes. En este programa de radio "Al Trasluz" escuchamos fragmentos del libro leído por Eugenio Barona y de la versión doblada al castellano de la película. José de Segovia comenta la obra y el autor, para tratar el tema de la muerte a la luz de la Biblia con la música de Mahler de fondo y la banda sonora de Angelo Badalamenti para la película de Paul Schrader, "El placer de los extraños" (1990) basada en la novela de Ian McEwan sobre otros extranjeros en crisis que encuentran un terrible final en Venecia. La música que suena al final es la composición de Stelvio Cipriani para "Anónimo veneciano" (1970), la película que se hizo tan popular en España de Enrico María Salerno. Las canciones son el "Senza Fine" de Gino Paoli, escrita en 1961 para la ahora fallecida Ornella Vanoni, pero que escuchamos en la voz del compositor y cantautor genovés. Y la composición que hizo el cantautor belga de habla francesa, Jacques Brel, sobre la muerte en 1959, que fascinó al americano Scott Walker, que la interpreta aquí con su potente voz en 1967 como "Mi muerte" (My Death) en 1967, antes de que David Bowie la popularizará en 1972. La realización técnica que une todas estas músicas y voces es obra de Daniel Panduro y los comentarios de José de Segovia.

Charlotte Link ist eine der erfolgreichsten deutschen Schriftstellerinnen der Gegenwart, besonders bekannt ist sie für ihre psychologischen Thriller. Für den Buchclub trifft Günter die Autorin nach einer Lesung vor 600 Fans in Dessau. „Es ist ein ganz tolles und herzerwärmendes Gefühl, den Menschen gegenüberzusitzen“, schwärmt sie. Né à Munich en 1906, Klaus Mann n'aurait jamais pu se contenter d'être le fils de son illustre écrivain de père, Thomas Mann, Prix Nobel de Littérature en 1929. Lui-même écrivain, aussi précoce que prolifique, Klaus Mann a été, dès le début des années 30, un féroce opposant au régime nazi, avant de s'exiler pour devenir à travers ses romans (Méphisto, Le Volcan), ses essais, sa revue (Die Sammlung) ou ses récits autobiographiques (Le Tournant) une figure de proue d'un idéal humaniste, socialiste, européen. Sa pensée comme son mode de vie, qui annonce les sexualités queer mais est aussi semée d'excès, n'ont jamais séparé les gestes des idées. Dans son essai biographique "Klaus. Nos parece motivo suficiente para dedicarle un programa monográfico y repasar sus obras más destacadas, de Los Buddenbrook a Doctor Faustus. Des récits fondateurs aux épopées transmises de génération en génération, la voix demeure au cœur de la mémoire et de la transmission. De quelle manière les formes orales façonnent-elles le texte, nourrissent la pensée et tissent un lien entre passé et présent ?   Il serait réducteur d'affirmer que le sanscrit n'est qu'une langue érudite et sacrée ! Il y a 2000 ans d'histoire littéraire, scientifique. On y trouve des traités d'architecture, d'astronomie mais aussi des belles lettres, du théâtre, des romans ! Cette langue n'a jamais été une langue parlée en tant que telle. Cette langue s'est fait connaitre grâce au Mahabharata, le livre de Véda Vyasa, une grande épopée lyrique qui raconte la guerre des Bharata et qui a donné lieu à de grandes mises en scène de Jean-Claude Carrière ou Peter Brook. Ce texte ainsi que le Ramayana étaient destinés à distraire la cour royale. Ils vont connaître la postérité et avoir un impact majeur et vont influencer des auteurs tels que Salman Rushdie ou Thomas Mann.  Quant à la langue coréenne, son histoire est très intéressante : son alphabet a été créé au XVè siècle. Environ 2/3 de son lexique provient de la langue chinoise classique : le hanmun. Le chinois classique était aussi une grande langue de lettrés et de traduction. Dass Tageszeitungen in der Vorweihnachtszeit hommes und seit geraumer Zeit auch femmes de lettres Bücher zum Fest empfehlen lassen, ist guter alter publizistischer Brauch. Wohl nur selten allerdings konnte ein Blatt dabei eine so illustre Runde von literarischen Experten vorweisen wie die Altonaer Nachrichten, die für ihre Ausgabe vom 12. Dezember 1925 Bücher-Tipps der Gebrüder Mann, von Stefan Zweig, Hermann Bahr, Siegfried Jacobsohn und Max Brod einzuholen vermochten. Während Heinrich Mann die Anfrage ausschließlich zur Bewerbung eigene Werke nutzt, zeigen sich vor allem Bruder Thomas sowie Stefan Zweig auch in fremder Sache außerordentlich belesen und vermögen mit ihren Vorschlägen hier und da durchaus zu überraschen. Vor allem dass nicht nur bei Max Brod, sondern auch bei Thomas Mann – wie schon vor wenigen Tagen in anderem Zusammenhang hier im Podcast – der Name Franz Kafka fällt, hätte man auf dem Gabentisch des Jahres 1925 vielleicht eher nicht erwartet. Dem Buchhandel geht es nicht gut, die Anzahl der verkauften Bücher ist in den vergangenen zehn Jahren um ein Fünftel zurückgegangen. Allerdings leiden nicht alle gleichermaßen unter der Entwicklung: Während inhabergeführte Geschäfte schließen, konnte Deutschlands größte Buchhandelskette Thalia ihre Umsätze in den vergangenen Jahren deutlich ausweiten, auf zuletzt 2,2 Mrd. Steve Dowden is a Professor of German language and literature in the Department of German, Russian, and Asian Languages and Literatures. He graduated in 1984 from the University of California with a Ph.D in German literature. After a decade teaching at Yale and a year as a Humboldt Fellow at the University of Konstanz he joined the Brandeis faculty in 1994. Dowden has published on German literature, art, music, and intellectual history from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century.
