Luke 12: 16-21 Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don't have room for all my crops.' Then he said, ‘I know! I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I'll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. And I'll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”' But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?' Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.” What if the things God has blessed you with slowly become the things you live for? Have you ever seen a hearse pulling a Uhaul? No – you truly can’t take it with you. Everything you’ve ever bought – everything you’ve ever built – everything you’ve ever worked for – it will all be gone in an instant when you take your final breath. And my friend, I assure you of this – your final breath is coming. One day you will wake up, and it will be your last. You may not know it, but that day will come – and when it does only heavenly things will matter. Every earthly thing will be over. But while we’re here having our earthly experience, it’s so easy to get wrapped up in our earthly things. It’s so easy to allow this entire life to become about work – about earning, about building, about buying, about having. All while we forget the entire point of our existence – this is our opportunity to have a rich relationship with God. The one who created you wants you to know him. The one who imagined you, designed you, and knit you together cell by cell in your mother’s womb – the one who watches over you, the one who aligns good plans for you, the one who is always working all things together for good concerning you – he has given you this time to grow to know him, trust him and love him. Everything else is temporary. Everything else is either a bonus – or it’s a distraction. In this story, there’s nothing wrong with the man being rich. He had a fertile farm. Guess where that fertile farm came from? That was God’s creation. God made that land. God allowed that land to be fertile. And that land produced fine crops. That’s a blessing. But here’s what those blessings did – they created wealth for this man and that wealth became a problem for him. He was so successful that he didn’t even have room to store all his crops. So of course, he plans to builds bigger barns. But, in all his success he failed to realize how extremely numbered his days were and his time was up that very night. Is it sinful to be successful? Is is wrong to have money? No. That’s not the point of Jesus’ story. The point here was this man had spent his life building success but hadn’t built a relationship with God. The man didn’t do anything obviously evil. He worked. He was productive. His land produced. He succeeded. He planned for the future. He built bigger barns. None of those things, by themselves, are bad. The problem is that God was completely absent from his plans. Notice how many times he says “I” and “my.” My crops. My barns. My wheat. His entire world had become about himself and what he could accumulate. Everything is “mine”. And yet, the truth is, everything he had was ultimately something he had received. The land wasn’t his creation. The rain wasn’t his creation. The fertility wasn’t his creation. His ability to work wasn’t his creation. His life itself wasn’t even his creation. BUT HAD HE FORGOTTEN ALL THAT IN HIS SUCCESS? This is really a story of building a life that looks successful on the outside but is becoming spiritually empty on the inside. This is a story of allowing the things God has blessed you with to become the things you live for. And really, isn’t this a huge threat to all of us? Have your blessings become the reason you live? If you lost those blessings, what would you have? You would still have your relationship with God – but if you haven’t been building that relationship with God, then you would be completely without a reason to live. And in the end, in that last breath, all you have is God. That moment is coming for every one of us. We all fear failure, but you know what’s more dangerous than failure … success. When life is hard, we tend to reach for God. When life is going swimmingly well, we get all wrapped up in our blessings and God gets crowded out. That’s dangerous. We pray when we’re desperate – but do we pray when we’re successful? We seek God when we’re broken – but do we seek him as much when everything is working? We beg God for provision when we don’t have enough – but do acknowledge him with that same fervency when we have more than enough? The danger isn’t having a lot. This is all God’s and he’s happy to share everything he has with his children. The danger is in having a lot and forgetting who gave it to you. I’ve done that. Haven’t you? The man in Jesus’ story didn’t make a mistake by building a bigger barn. His mistake was building a bigger and bigger life without building a bigger relationship with God. What’s the title of this podcast? BIG Life. We’re here seeking the BIG Life God created us for. We believe each of us were created for a big, beautiful life. What’s the key part of that BIG Life – our relationship with God. Otherwise, we’re just building barns that we can’t take with us! Here’s what God wants to ask his girls today: All while you’re working on building a bigger life with your business, and your house, your family, and your health – how’s your relationship with ME? With all this building, HOW IS YOUR SOUL? My girl, are you becoming more like Jesus? Are you learning to trust me? Are you growing to be more generous? Are you living more peacefully? Are you loving my people better? Are you spending time with me? Are you really enjoying this life I gave you to live? If all you’re doing is building bigger barns, your soul may be getting smaller. And Jesus says that’s dangerous! The man in Jesus’ story is planning for YEARS, but in reality his timeline is brutally short. We plan as those we have forever, but God asks us to live faithfully today with an eternal focus. We don’t know how many more summers we get. How many Christmases. How many mornings with the people we love. How many conversations. How many sunsets. God doesn’t remind of this to make us fearful – he reminds us of this to help us WAKE UP. When you remember how temporary this life is, you can actually learn to live more fully. In my moment of believing this life was truly over there were only 2 thoughts in my mind – I was going to see Jesus THAT day -and- did I tell my people that I love them. That’s it. Nothing else mattered. When I received the miraculous gift of more time, I was forever changed in how I woke up to each new day. I know what’s important, so I know how to live. All this other stuff is temporary. If you knew you only had one year left, what would suddenly become important? Would you still work the same amount? Would you still care about having the same things? Would you still spend hours scrolling? Would you still keep putting off that conversation? Would you still be waiting for someday to do what God has been asking you to do? Would you still be obsessed with how you look? Would you still be trying so hard to impress people who won’t even be at your funeral? Would you spend your time differently? Would you love differently? Would you give differently? Would you slow down? Why are you waiting for a terminal diagnosis to start living like your life matters? You don’t have to know when your last day is to start living differently. Jesus isn’t saying: Don’t have anything. He’s saying: Don’t let what you have become who you are. You can enjoy beautiful things without worshiping beautiful things. You can dream BIG without making your dreams bigger than God. The issue isn’t what is in your hands. The issue is what has captured your heart. Before we build absolutely anything – let us make sure we are building the one thing that that matters – our relationship with God. The rich fool spent his life accumulating things he couldn’t keep. But Jesus invites us to spend our lives building something we can take into eternity—our relationship with Him. If I keep living exactly the way I’m living today, what will my life look like five years from now? Will I simply have more stuff? More money? More accomplishments? More things checked off the list? Or will I know Jesus more deeply? Will I love people better? More faithful? More courageous? More alive? Because that’s the measurement Jesus gives us. Not how much we accumulated. Not how impressive our barns became. Not how successful we appeared. But whether we became rich toward God. Last weekend, I did something I had never done before. I drove a 15-foot U-Haul more than 1,000 miles from Northern Kentucky to Fort Worth, Texas, while pulling my daughter's 2015 Toyota Corolla on a tow dolly. For weeks leading up to the trip, my mind was rehearsing everything that could possibly go wrong. What if I had to back up? Would I be able to navigate gas stations? Where would I park overnight? Could I make it through narrow construction lanes? What would it feel like driving with 18-wheelers on either side of me? I did what I could to prepare. I watched videos, asked questions, learned how to secure the car, and got advice from someone who had done it before. But there were some things I simply could not learn ahead of time. I had to get behind the wheel. At my first fuel stop, my nervous system was in overdrive. I asked my wife and daughter not to talk while I figured out how to maneuver this entire setup through the gas station. And then I did it. Nothing terrible happened. The second fuel stop was easier. By the fourth or fifth stop, my attitude had completely changed. What had felt overwhelming only hours earlier was becoming normal. Eventually, I was driving at highway speeds with an 18-wheeler on my left and another on my right, and it felt like no big deal. The U-Haul had not gotten smaller. The tow dolly had not gotten narrower. The Corolla was still hanging off the back. The roads had not changed. I had changed. I now had experience. My mind had wanted confidence before I had the experience, but it was the experience itself that created the confidence. Every mile gave me evidence. Every fuel stop gave me evidence. Every narrow lane and every turn gave me evidence. And even when something actually did go wrong and we had to replace the tow dolly along the way, I discovered that I could handle that too. This experience reminded me of something that applies to so many areas of life and business. Sometimes we are mentally rehearsing something over and over, waiting until we feel confident enough to begin. But maybe confidence is not what we need first. Maybe we need to get behind the wheel, pull out of the driveway, and allow experience to give us the evidence that thinking never can. What are you mentally rehearsing right now? Life has a way of surprising us with journeys we never quite planned for. Many of us intend to stay in one place permanently, and then circumstances shift — a job opportunity, a growing family, a door that opens in an unexpected direction — and suddenly we are packing boxes and asking God what comes next. Moving ranks among the top three most stressful life events, which is precisely why prayer needs to be at the center of every step. Abram was seventy-five years old when God told him to leave everything he had ever known and go to a land He would show him — with no map, no destination specified, and no U-Haul. He went anyway. And when he arrived in Canaan, the land was already inhabited. What awaited him was not a simple, obstacle-free welcome. But it was exactly where God had called him, and a promise of breathtaking proportion met him there. Isaiah 46:10 frames the whole story: God declares the end from the beginning. His purpose will stand, and all His good pleasure He will accomplish. That truth belongs to every family loading a moving truck today. Just because a new place comes with complications, unknowns, and an inhabited landscape does not mean God is absent from the plan. What matters most is not how the circumstances appear upon arrival, but what God will say and do next. Those who move with the Lord move with His hand upon them every step of the way — and the impact of their obedience reaches further than they can currently see. Today's Bible Verse "I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, 'My purpose will stand, and all my good pleasure I will accomplish.'"— Isaiah 46:10, ESV Ponder Today God is intentional about location. He directed Abram's path with purpose, and He is equally intentional about where He places His people today. A move made in obedience to His leading carries the weight of His purpose behind it. Obstacles upon arrival do not mean the move was a mistake. When Abram reached Canaan, the land was already occupied. God's plan was not derailed — it was unfolding. Complications do not cancel calling. The promise awaits at the destination, not before departure. Abram received God's word of assurance after he arrived, not before he left. Faithfulness in the going often precedes clarity about the purpose. A move made with God impacts generations beyond your own. The promise God made to Abram in Canaan still holds weight in the Holy Lands today. Our obedience in the present shapes what comes after us in ways we may never fully see. You do not walk the path of a move alone. God's hand accompanies every step — the packing, the farewell, the unfamiliar streets, the search for a new church family. He is present in all of it and He is providing for all of it. A Prayer for You Today Father God, we lift up today every family and individual who is planning a move. We know that even a move across town can have a domino effect on the lives of those around them and on generations to come. Lord, You see the whole plan from start to finish. We pray for assurance for those taking leaps of faith that they will be met with solid ground that can only come from You. We pray for conviction that they know You sent them, and for provision through every step from packing to finding a new home to building new community and connecting to a new church body. May each member of the moving family know within themselves that You have a purpose for this move in their lives and in their story. May this experience glorify Your name and serve as a testimony of Your creativity, goodness, and faithfulness. In Jesus' holy name, Amen. PHP Podcast – July 23, 2026 Hosts: Joe Ferguson, Sara Golemon, and Holly Schilling Eric got ousted from his own show (no pants required), Holly’s elephants are lost somewhere in the U.S., and the crew talks SIMD, PHP 8.6 feature freeze, and whether AI can actually create. Also, socks. A Show Without Pants: The Guest Takeover This week Eric got booted from his own podcast while John was off doing something more important, leaving Holly, Sara, and Producer Joe to run the show. The gang wasted no time reminding everyone that the correct Discord URL is discord.phparch.com — not phparch.com/discord — a mistake that ended up as tomorrow’s task list item for Joe. There was plenty of housekeeping to get through: PHP Tek 2027 lands April 27th through 29th in Chicago, the CFP is open, and the call for papers closes August 31st. Holly, ever the deadline enthusiast, admitted she loves “the sound deadlines make as they whoosh by,” which set the tone for much of the episode. And yes, the swag store now has PHP Architect socks. There was extensive debate about whether the socks are safe for large-footed individuals, whether banana-for-scale photos are needed, and whether Eric should post feet pics. DuckNizzle bought some socks. We are also, apparently, SOC 2 certified. The Great Elephant Migration Sara’s elephant herd is currently scattered across the United States, most of them somewhere between Chicago and California courtesy of U-Haul. With import forms to Portugal not yet ready, the plush pachyderms are taking a scenic detour west before eventually making their way overseas. Only six elephants are currently on hand, and technically none of them are PHP Architect elephants — though one is a PHP Roundtable elephant, prompting the recurring wish that someone should bring that podcast back. Spoiler: they might, more on that later. Sara also shared she’s been in intensive foreign language classes every day, getting up at 7 a.m. while not falling asleep until 2 a.m., all while assembling a Prusa Core One+ 3D printer kit with roughly 300 pages of instructions and hundreds of tiny pieces. SIMD and Data Science in PHP Joe brought a blog post from Mitchell Hashimoto arguing that everyone should know SIMD — Single Instruction, Multiple Data. It’s a form of parallel computing that can dramatically speed up large data processing, offering 8x, 10x, even 100x improvements when you’re working with hundreds of thousands or millions of records. It won’t help you loop over a 100-item array, but it might supercharge a FlowPHP parquet file with millions of rows. Sara pushed back on how deep into the processor this discussion goes, noting that floating point math already flows through the SIMD registers — so in a very narrow sense, you’re already getting SIMD support in current PHP. Reordering instructions safely is another matter entirely (see: Intel’s history of getting it wrong). The conversation tied back to Florian Englehart’s “One Billion Rows” talk at PHP Tek 2025, and Holly mentioned her monomorphic generics work now supports variadic types — meaning a typed vector structure could, with a bit of JIT work, make SIMD-style patterns possible in PHP’s near future. PHP 8.6 Feature Freeze Is Coming Code freeze for PHP 8.6 lands August 11th — less than three weeks out. The release managers admitted they flubbed and missed the five-week warning email that should have gone out July 6th, though the four-week email did go out July 13th and a two-week warning is coming next Monday. Sara, one of PHP’s previous release managers, was philosophical about people panicking at the deadline: you’ve had twelve months, your lack of planning is not the release team’s problem. An idea to move the feature freeze date was floated and quickly shot down — the cadence has been established for years, and one missed email doesn’t change that. Larry got a shout-out for suggesting internals push all new business to September so 8.6 can get properly tested. And Holly declared, in full Benevolent Dictator mode, that the next release simply has to be 9.0 — too many big features to ship for a mere 8.7. AI, Copyright, and Whether Machines Can Create The crew dug into AI, starting with the news that a judge approved Anthropic’s $1.5 billion copyright lawsuit settlement — with roughly two-thirds going to lawyers. On the brighter side, Anthropic is giving a million dollars to Code Crew, a Memphis nonprofit building a physical location to offer less-predatory career training. Holly described using AI to implement a new module dereference operator (colon greater-than) that exists nowhere but her own machine, arguing the AI isn’t stealing when it follows precise instructions to generate novel syntax. Sara countered that the LLM isn’t creating so much as blending existing functionality — following instructions rather than inventing. The debate turned philosophical: how much truly new code have humans written in the last decade? We stand on the shoulders of giants, we’re “thinking meat sacks,” and Sara cheerfully accepted the label of “biased anti-clanker bigot.” The Terminator is coming for Larry first, apparently. Foundation Transparency and Household Jira The PHP Foundation published a quarterly progress report authored by Elizabeth, detailing what every contractor and employee has been working on. Holly praised Elizabeth for bringing the transparency the Foundation had long lacked, since devs have a lot of autonomy and asking them what they’re doing is, apparently, the worst. This spiraled into a discussion of household project management — one host’s wife is a project manager, another family installed a Jira instance for their home that the programmer husband absolutely hates, and there’s a gamified house-cleaning app that Holly refuses to adopt for fear she’ll either become obsessed or start a fight over losing. The episode wrapped with talk of finally reviving PHP Roundtable (scheduling permitting), Longhorn PHP acceptances, and gentle ribbing that Eric and John are “getting up in years” and can’t perform with their usual podcast consistency. My guest on today's show, Barry Black, has been involved in investigating multi-million dollar crimes, from being a SWAT sniper at the Waco standoff, a bomb tech at the Oklahoma bombing, and 9/11. Let's get to know Barry. Barry joined the FBI in 1988 and was assigned to the Oklahoma City Division, where he primarily investigated complex financial crimes. Mr. Black served as an FBI SWAT sniper for several years, including a 51-day deployment to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, in 1993. The following year, Mr. Black was certified as a Bomb Technician at the FBI's Hazardous Devices School. In 1995, he was a first responder to the bombing of Oklahoma City's Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and remained a member of the OKBOMB Task Force. As the threat of terrorism grew, Mr. Black was assigned to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, where he worked with international partners in the global war on terror and trained highly specialized military and counterterrorism units in hostile regions around the world. Domestically, Mr. Black responded to the 1996 Atlanta Olympic bombing, the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, the 2005 bombing at the University of Oklahoma, the bombing of a U.S. Air Force recruiting station, and, in a complex undercover operation, helped thwart a 2017 truck bomb attack targeting a major financial center in Oklahoma City. After retiring from the FBI, Mr. Black became an adjunct faculty member at the University of Central Oklahoma's Forensic Science Institute. He has served as a consultant, keynote speaker, and provided commentary for various national and international media outlets and documentaries. In October of 2021, the body of five-year-old Elijah Lewis was found buried in a Massachusetts park. Cam Marston has a confession today — eighteen months ago, he and his wife made a pact to declutter their house for good. Here's why it didn't survive contact with a U-Haul trailer. ----- About eighteen months ago, my wife and I made a deal in a hotel room overlooking the Atlantic. We called it the Fort Lauderdale Accord — not a bucket list of what we wanted before we died, but a list of what we wanted gone. Our aim was to simplify and we agreed on one thing: we had collected too much stuff. So we made a rule. One thing in, two things out. Net loss, every time. We clinked glasses, pinkie truced, and named it like a treaty. For a while, it worked. Drawers emptied. Goodwill runs multiplied. Countertops and the bottoms of drawers reappeared — visible countertops, with nothing on them, visible drawers with nothing in them. We were smug about it. We could do this. Then my mother-in-law passed away, and my wife and her siblings spent two weeks in Raleigh emptying her parent's home. Room by room, drawer by drawer — the work nobody prepares you for. My wife came home in her SUV towing a U-Haul trailer, both packed to the roof. We had to get a storage unit due to so much stuff. And here's the thing — the Accord didn't fail because we lost discipline. It failed because we'd built a rule for the wrong category of object. One thing in, two things out works fine against impulse buys and gadgets and garage-sale finds, because those things are interchangeable. Lamps are lamps. They have little emotion to them. However, a grandfather clock that chimes every half hour and puts my wife back in her bedroom where she could hear the chimes throughout the night all during her childhood? That's not an object competing for shelf space. That's not even really an object. It's a delivery system for a memory, and the rule we wrote was never built to take that into account. That's the part I missed when we pinkie truced our little treaty. We treated "stuff" as one category, when it's really two: things you acquired, and things that acquired meaning long long ago. The first kind has gravitational pull — it accumulates because it's easy, and stays put out of inertia. Not because it matters. The second kind doesn't accumulate at all. It just shows up loaded with emotion and memory, and you'd never get rid of it on a technicality. So we've set a new plan — two years from now, whatever the kids haven't claimed for their own houses and apartments by then goes. But, truth be told, I give that plan poor odds. My wife and my long-term history is to collect, not cull. However, I've stopped thinking we have a discipline problem. It's a category problem. Maybe this stuff means too much, and its outside a rule pinkie truced and clinked over wine glasses. When the last box gets unpacked, we're opening a bottle and clinking glasses again. Not to the Accord — but to what it taught us about ourselves. And a U-Haul trailer. And a grandfather clock that still chimes on the half hour, exactly like it did in her parent's home. Prosecutors made Adam Montgomery an offer at sentencing in the Harmony Montgomery case: reveal where you put your daughter's remains, and we'll recommend a lighter sentence. He sat in the courtroom and said nothing. He walked into his own jury selection smiling. He refused to attend most of his trial. And he has never once told anyone where Harmony is.That silence now sits alongside a unanimous New Hampshire Supreme Court decision reversing Montgomery's second-degree murder conviction on procedural grounds. The court ruled that trying the killing charge and a separate assault charge together in one trial prejudiced the jury. The assault evidence was strong — multiple witnesses, no dispute. The murder evidence depended almost entirely on Kayla Montgomery's testimony, and the court found the jury may not have convicted without the assault case propping it up.The state intends to retry the murder charge. Montgomery remains behind bars on assault, evidence tampering, witness tampering, and what he did to Harmony's remains — hiding her in a duffel bag, a car trunk, a ceiling vent at a homeless shelter, and a walk-in freezer at the pizza shop where he worked. He used lime on his own daughter's body. He rented a U-Haul and drove her remains to a disposal site somewhere between Manchester and Massachusetts. We open with one of the most disturbing stories we've covered — federal officials have located 146,000 unaccompanied migrant children who entered the country during the Biden administration and disappeared into a broken government tracking system. Nearly half a million unaccompanied children were transferred into federal custody between 2019 and 2023, and the government lost track of three out of every four of them. Over 32,000 failed to appear for immigration court hearings — children who legally don't even have the capacity to be responsible for that. We point out that some sponsors used the same addresses and names over and over to claim multiple children — a hallmark of trafficking networks — and that acting Attorney General Todd Blanch confirmed this program was exploited for sexual assault and trafficking. We make the case that this level of failure isn't incompetence. It's a feature, not a bug, of an administration that prioritized volume over accountability — and we ask where these children go to get their childhoods back. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, President Trump paused another round of attacks on Iran after announcing a breakthrough in negotiations, with a final deal expected to be signed in Europe as early as this weekend — including guarantees Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon and that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen to shipping without Iranian tolls. Some normal, some strange, some have you turning your head.  Arlo drained her fish tank and claims that he took his wife, Sara's,  fish and gave them away. They live in a small apartment and it's her fish tank. She never cleans it, the whole place smells from the tank, and he's asked her many, many times to clean it, replace it- whatever. He finally said that if she didn't rectify the situation, he was going to take care of it himself. Sara's so mad that he gave away her fish, and she's not even sure if he's telling the truth about giving away the fish or if he just flushed them. He says that she had a timeline and didn't do it, she says they're married, he's not her father and she's not a child. Who was in the wrong?   Jeremy has a chance to win $1,400!    The state of Kansas has about a thousand issues Missouri doesn't have.  Eight years with a Dem governor will have that effect.  The state is 43rd in America in average income.  The state income tax is the highest in the region and for 2 million people it's a 3-6 hour U-Haul to zero state tax in Texas.   The population is shrinking and that's very rare for a red state.       Missouri is working toward zero percent income tax and the exodus of Kansas residents to Missouri would be an eastern moving tidal wave in KC.  The budget has soared over 60% for no good reason at all.    Oh, and the government schools are a total mess as they scream for more money from Topeka.    Jeff Colyer was governor for a year in 2018-19.  He left a surplus and a record of transparency and accountability.  It's long gone.    Governor Colyer is back after a full life as a surgeon, volunteer surgeon around the globe and years of public service in his home state.  He appears to be the frontrunner in a really crowed field for governor and here's here to tell you what he's planning to do to clean up the mess.     Then, in our Final Final, a 177 year old brand that reminds me of my dad closes down.
