SDR #373: 5 Things Great Service Managers Do

Great service managers don't simply survive the month—they build stronger teams, improve the customer experience and create consistently profitable service departments. In this episode of Service Drive Revolution, automotive fixed operations expert Chris Collins reveals five overlooked habits that separate great dealership service managers from average ones. Great service managers: 1. Reject the status quo and continually improve their processes. 2. Know their numbers and understand how to change them. 3. Become "people collectors" who constantly recruit, develop and retain talented employees. 4. Make the customer experience easy, trustworthy and worth returning for. 5. Find coaches and mentors who challenge them to keep learning. Chris explains why dealership service departments are closed-loop systems, how tribal knowledge keeps managers trapped in outdated processes and why exceptional performance can actually make a manager's job easier—not harder. The conversation also examines service department profitability, net-to-gross, unproductive wages, CSI, NPS, technician recruiting, service advisor performance and customer retention. You'll learn why sales scripts and objection handling cannot replace customer trust, why technology such as video multipoint inspections cannot fix a broken process and why successful service managers are always recruiting. Chris also discusses former CIA intelligence officer Andrew Bustamante and his book Outsmart Everyone: Spy Skills to Gain an Unfair Advantage in Work and Life. The team explores charisma, vulnerability, intentional leadership, parenting and the ability to make genuine connections with people. This episode is for: Dealer principals General managers Fixed operations directors Service managers Parts managers Service advisors Automotive technicians Dealership and repair-shop leaders. If you want a healthier, more profitable automotive service operation, this episode provides a practical leadership framework you can immediately apply.

Automotive Procurement's Power Problem: What Other Industries Do Better

    Finding Gravitas Podcast

Automotive built the procurement playbook. Structure, process, category management, sourcing discipline. Compressed margins forced it, and every penny had to be defended. The problem is that the same discipline that made automotive procurement world-class is now the thing slowing it down.Phil Ideson, Founder and Managing Director of Art of Procurement, has seen both sides of that. He started his career in automotive purchasing at Vauxhall, moved through Ford's graduate scheme, went to Visteon, and then left for pharma, consumer products, technology, and financial services. Today, he runs Art of Procurement, home of the number one procurement podcast in the world, and he spends his days with procurement leaders across every industry you can name. Jan has known him for years, and she has never met anyone who cares more about elevating this function. In this episode, Phil names something the industry rarely says out loud. Many automotive processes exist to maintain control, not to drive an outcome. Purchasing teams waved the process in people's faces because that is where the power came from, and the whole function ended up measured on cost savings because that is the business case procurement built for itself. Then comes the part about AI. Phil argues it is an operating model question, not a technology purchase, and he lays out what happens when you free up capacity with AI and your team is not ready to use it.There is also a preview of Catalyst coming to Detroit on September 22nd, and Phil designed it as a small room for 30 to 50 senior leaders rather than another hall full of exhibitors. The mindset shift here is bigger than procurement. It is about whether legacy automotive can stop protecting what works long enough to build what is next.Themes Discussed in this EpisodeWhat automotive procurement does well and where it lagsProcess built for control instead of outcomesThe cost savings trap inside procurement's own business caseWhy the "seat at the table" mindset keeps the function smallPower dynamics and early supplier engagementAI as an operating model question, not a technology purchaseMaking sense of a market of 500-plus procurement tech providersDriving change with confidence

Communication is key to GM Financial's continued success under new leadership, according to retiring GM Financial President of North America Operations Kyle Birch. "There'll always be challenges for lenders and dealers, even in the best of times," he told Auto Finance News.  "We talk a lot about sales, funding, credit performance, customer satisfaction, profitability — the list goes on. But if we're not talking about that with our dealer customers [or] in the lending industry, then we're not helping our dealers sell more cars.” Birch's tenure with GM Financial spans nearly 16 years, He has been president since February 2018 and before that chief operating officer and executive vice president of GM Financial North America. He also was with the captive's legacy company, AmeriCredit Financial Services, for 13 years. Jonas Hollandsworth, executive vice president and COO of North America, will succeed Birch in September.  "He knows what to do and how to do it well, especially with our dealer customers," Birch said of Hollandsworth. "He'll dive deeper on the consumer side of our business and spend more time growing and learning about our Canadian business." In this podcast, Auto Finance News editor Amanda Harris and GM Financial's Kyle Birch talk about his tenure at the captive and preparing the next generation to lead.

Her old Royal Enfield has broken down, she's relied on maps and strangers for directions, and she often leaves room for not knowing exactly what happens next. Some of the experiences she values most happened precisely because something didn't go according to plan. So as motorcycle travel becomes safer, easier and more predictable, what are we gaining — and what might we be insulating ourselves from? Korean manufacturer Samsung SDI announced that it acquired General Motors' stake in the SynergyCells joint venture. The collaboration had planned to build a $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery cell factory in New Carlisle, Indiana, with the American automaker holding a 49.99% stake.Samsung SDI attributed the decision to market changes since the joint venture's conception in 2023, including “slower-than-expected growth of EV demand.” The company said it plans to continue building the facility, which would serve as its first independently operated battery production base in North America. The plant is currently under construction, though Samsung SDI did not provide an expected completion date. Once finished, the company now plans to make batteries for energy storage systems. Despite GM's exit from the joint venture, the two companies signed a new agreement to develop a prismatic battery cell for potential future EV applications, with Samsung SDI noting that the Indiana plant could eventually make the cells.General Motors and Samsung SDI formed their original partnership in April 2023 and selected New Carlisle as the plant site two months later. The joint venture intended to make nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells, achieve a capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours, create 1,600 jobs and begin production in 2026. However, in August 2024, the companies delayed the production start to 2027 after construction had begun.GM's decision to sell its stake follows a January 8 SEC filing in which the automaker said it expected to record approximately $6 billion in charges in the fourth quarter of 2025 following its review of EV capacity and investments. The announcement comes as automakers scale back EV plans after the loss of a $7,500 EV federal tax credit last September.#GM, #GeneralMotors, #SamsungSDI, #EV, #ElectricVehicles, #EVBatteries, #BatteryManufacturing, #EnergyStorage, #Manufacturing, #IndianaManufacturing, #Automotive, #BatteryTechnology, #SupplyChain, #IndustrialNews, #ManufacturingNews

Randy shares why opening a second location forced the company to expand into total car care, how he learned to delegate while managing multiple stores and why tire dealers must be willing to invest – and remain patient – to keep growing. The conversation also explores family-business succession, working alongside siblings, preparing the next generation and keeping workplace disagreements from affecting family relationships. Randy explains why personal vehicle walkarounds, direct conversations and earning a customer's trust remain essential, even as video inspections, AI and automation change the tire and auto repair industry.

Tariffs bought this industry a window. Ramiro Gutierrez, President of North America, ZF Group, is not convinced we are using it.He has spent 30 years in the automotive industry, and he left it once. Aerospace turned out to be slower than he expected, with cycles running roughly five times longer, and he returned to ZF for engineering. What he came back to is a company spending around 8% of revenue on R&D and now under real pressure to prove that money produces a return. That pressure is where this conversation starts, and it goes somewhere most tier one interviews do not. Ramiro walks through what his Chinese customers are doing with hardware ZF has already put on the vehicle. A customer looked at ZF's active suspension and figured out that lifting a wheel lets you change a flat tire without a jack. At CES, ZF showed a tire-noise function built from a damper and a chassis sensor, both already on the car. Same hardware, new functionality, software doing the work.Meanwhile, the Western specification book has been growing for a hundred years, page after page, all for good reasons, until it moved past anything a customer can feel. The cost is real, and the value is not.Ramiro is direct about tariffs. He calls them a tool in the sandbox, useful for buying time. He is just as direct about what happens if the industry spends that time defending the status quo instead of closing the gap. Then there is the leadership half of it. He is president of ZF North America and head of the global steering business unit, sitting between a German foundation owner under enormous pressure and a workforce spread across the US, Mexico, and Canada. His answer to that complexity is not a new org chart. It is communication treated as an investment, people sent to see other realities with their own eyes, consensus built and then closed, and accountability that sounds like “where are we” rather than “why didn't you.”The clock is running. Ramiro believes the future is bright. He also believes we have to move.Themes Discussed in this EpisodeCreating value through software, not more hardwareWhy Chinese OEMs adopt technology fasterTariffs as a tool with an expiration dateThe hundred-year specification problemCommunication as a leadership investmentPositive accountability without micromanagementLeading a German-owned business across three countriesEngineering ambition meeting financial disciplineThis episode is sponsored by Lockton, click here to learn more

Thanks to our Partners, Pico Technology and AutelWatch Full Video EpisodeDiagnosing the Aftermarket Becomes Automotive Field TheoryThings have changed. After years as Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z, the podcast has a new name: Automotive Field Theory. In this episode, Matt explains why the original title was chosen, why it eventually became a problem, and how the new name better represents both the podcast and the range of subjects explored on it.The original name was intended to leave the show wide open. Automotive diagnostics and technology were always part of it, but so were psychology, economics, relationships, mental health, addiction, movies, sports, professional wrestling, and the people behind the work. That freedom is not going away. The problem was simpler: people searching for automotive and auto repair podcasts often could not find the show. Neither “diagnosing” nor “aftermarket” is exclusively connected to the automotive industry, and the word “automotive” did not appear anywhere in the title.Automotive Field Theory solves that problem while also fitting the show on several levels. It is a play on quantum field theory, reflecting Matt's lifelong interest in physics and his tendency to explore how things actually work. It also refers to the entire automotive field, from vehicle design and manufacturing through sales, service, collision repair, locksmithing, programming, calibration, modification, and eventually recycling. Finally, there is the theory itself: automotive theory, diagnostic theory, economic theory, psychological theory, and the hypotheses and ideas that shape how people understand the profession. The name is changing. The podcast fundamentally is not.In This EpisodeWhy Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z was originally chosenThe searchability problem with the old titleWhy “automotive” needed to be in the nameThe connection between automotive field theory and quantum field theoryThe enormous range of careers contained within the automotive fieldWhere independent repair overlaps with collision, locksmithing, programming, and ADASWhy the new title may make it easier to invite guests and reach new listenersWhat listeners can expect from the show going forwardThe people and podcasts that helped inspire and support the changeMatt also recognizes several shows across the Automotive Repair Podcast Network, including:Remarkable Results Radio PodcastBusiness by the NumbersSpeak Up! The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, Toyota Land Cruiser + 4Runner, Porsche 911, Ford F-150, and Range Rover, all have several things in common. Slow depreciation compared to other vehicles in their class, nameplates that have lasted for decades, loyal owners that keep coming back for more and bucket listed for others. But what's the ONE thing they all unanimously share? Automotive authenticity. That's right - these vehicles have never strayed too far from their original design and intended purpose since inception. The Ford F-150 has always been a rugged, body-on-frame truck. The G-Wagen, 4Runner, and Land Cruiser have always been boxy SUVs that have stayed true to their design and off-road capability without compromise. The Porsche 911 has always had the engine behind its driver and will continue to do so until the end of time. Today's episode explores more into what authenticity - and deception - mean in an automotive context. Blob-shaped SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, and Ferrari Purosangue are one thing - they claim to do everything well, but end up not fully delivering on this promise and often depreciate like rocks. On the subject of deception - Jason and Derek discuss the new Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale - the most recent car of its kind which claims to be a manual and automatic at the same time, by automating a dual clutch transmission to operate like a manual on demand - third pedal, gated shifter and all. But is it really good for the brand in the long run vs. spending the development cost on a real manual? The Carmudgeons….carmudgeonate on our behalf. Tune in to find out.
