Paul mentions his upcoming presentation to the ⁠⁠L.A. Chapter of AAII⁠⁠ on November 16, 2024    10:30 to noon. Chris Pedersen and Daryl Bahls join Paul to answer your questions.  Paul opens the podcast with a brief introduction of the team and notes how thankful he is for their commitment to helping others. Paul mentions the huge moves small cap value funds made on November 6.  He follows that with a comparison of the 5 year returns of AVUV and  3 Vanguard small cap value funds (VBR, VIOV and VTWV).  AVUV compound rate of returns were 3 plus percent higher than the Vanguard funds.  Paul's questions:  What caused the higher returns and are they likely to be similar in the future? Chris responds with a lengthy discussion of the systematic approach that AVUV uses and Paul reads what AVUV says about their systematic approach. Chris compares the DFA small cap value fund (DFSV) with AVUV.  Chris also talks about a relative ranking he wants add to his Best In Class recommendations next year. Chris discusses the quality factor of AVUV vs. funds that build their small cap value portfolio using the Russell 2000 Small Cap Value Index.  He introduced a new term: rich minus weak ratio.Paul and Chris discuss the question:  Is AVUV and actively managed fund? Question:  JL Collins recommends VTI (Total Market Index) and Warren Buffett recommends VOO (S&P 500).  Which do we recommend?  Chris notes the important differences between VTI and AVUS and suggests a likely extra .5% return from AVUS. For those who want to own only total market funds, the group discusses the possibilities of replacing both VIT(U.S. Total Market)  and  VXUS (International Total Market) with total market indexes that favor slightly smaller companies with a slightly more value tilt. Paul updates his list of reasons to use index funds plus comparing the handful of Vanguard Small Cap Value ETFs (VTWV, SLYV, VBR AND VIOV) with the newer Avantis and DFA small cap value ETFs.  He also makes the case that AVUS and DFAU total market funds are likely to produce better returns than VTSAX, VTI, VOO AND VFINX. He also discusses the 15 year returns of 6 each large cap growth, large cap value, small cap blend, small cap growth and small cap value indexes.  The lessons from these tables should be enough to encourage investors to take a closer look at the holdings in their holdings in these asset classes.   In his discussion of indexing he mentions a podcast "#1 reason to own index funds " that has had more than 1,067,000 opens and his MarketWatch article entitled “30 Reasons I Love Index Funds.” He also committed to producing a video, on how to use Morningstar to compare your mutual fund and ETF investments, before the end of the year.

Han stilte opp i løp og gjorde så bra fra seg i klassen "Nordisk spesial" at han ble "the goto guy" hvis du skulle ha bygget en racerbil. Og løpsbiler ble Greger Strøm liv, og helst Ford motorisert, på tidlig på sekstitallet ble Greger og Kristian hyret av Ford Norge til å vedlikeholde løpsbilene deres. Dermed ble det jobbing døgnet rundt for å holde Trond Schea med optimal bil, om det var Lotus Cortina, Escort eller Mustang trillet de alle gjennom dørene på Ljabrubilverksted. Vårt intervjuobjekt Christian bygget også løpsbiler men han viste seg også å ha et stort talent for aking og ble NM mester to ganger og deltok i OL to ganger! We're going on a deeeeep, forensic dive into Hanussen's Grand Prix-diction—the prophecy that EJH delivered the night before the AVUS Race in Berlin in a club filled w/ Nazi & British aristocratic Formula One racers, in which he foretold both the winner of the race & the fiery death of Prince Lobkowicz that would occur the following day… Specifically, we're zeroing in on the reams of circumstantial evidence that seem to indicate a conspiracy by elements of the Nazi party & German military to assassinate the Prince, either thru mechanical sabotage or vehicular manslaughter, and the likelihood that Hanussen's prophecy was either a decoy to distract the public from the conspiracy at the behest of the Nazis or else a final & possibly reckless attempt to warn the Prince off from driving in the race, an extension of Hanussen's role as an intel asset for the British. Regardless of these varying interpretations for the motivations behind Hanussen's prophecy, I think you'll find that the evidence we've pulled together that indicates this potential conspiracy & cover-up is pretty compelling. Especially fascinating are the surveys of the familial histories of the Prussian noble family of military careerists & the old Czech Catholic noble fam of Habsburgian allies who take center stage in the narrative via their respective descendants who took their places at AVUS on that fateful day—one would leave draped in bouquets, the other in a body bag. And then, in the latter portion of the EP, we contend w/ Hanussen's numerous connections to Zionist elements & the fact that, during the same journey throughout the Levant & North Africa that saw him become an intel asset & likely meet Aleister Crowley, he also toured Mandatory Palestine w/ “high Zion*st officials”—which forces us to update our list of alternating theories of Hanussen w/ a 4th option, one where Hanussen was, at the deepest level, a Zion*st at heart & loyal to the Zionist project... Atho there appears to be a relative dearth of info regarding his Zionist ties when compared to others, a Zi*nist angle can function as a sort of unifying theory for EJH, as it would account for his infiltration of both Nazi & British intelligence (as evinced by the Zi*nists' double-dealings w/ both the Nazis & Britain & their vacillating allegiances during the early 20th century). We also end w/ a quick note about the importance of holding the ambiguities & seemingly contradictory info regarding Hanussen's life in one's mind simultaneously when examining him—as well as resisting the urge to try & force his life to conform to some singular motivational & psychological schema. And finally, in light of the ongoing tragedy in Palestine, we also consider some of the historical valences & current examples of Zion*st collaboration w/ fascists, from Nazis like Adolf Eichmann to the arming of the Az*v Battalion. Alerones, culatas multiválvulas, frenos de disco, turbo, tracción delantera y total, evoluciones y revoluciones aerodinámicas y otros muchos avances, provienen de la competición del motor… pero no de la F1. Confieso que soy el primero que dice y pienso que la F1 es lo más de lo más en tecnología y que muchos avances que luego han llegado a nuestros coches han nacido en la F1… Y a quien piense que eso fue así en el pasado, pero no ahora, le voy a dar un dato: El Renault Captur y otros híbridos de Renault llevan 150 patentes exclusivas ensayadas en su equipo de F1. Pero…no todo es F1, hay más cosas: La resistencia, los GT e incluso, como veremos, los rallyes, nos han traído avances muchos de los cuáles han llegado a los coches de calle. He elegido 10 con la esperanza de que algunos de ellos os sorprendan, aunque otros… estaban cantados. Me he dejado unos cuantos, en la recámara, pero siempre hay opción de que hagamos más vídeos sobre el tema… 1. Peugeot L76. 16 válvulas (1912). En general he tratado de huir de los monoplazas, aunque antes de 1950 podemos hablar de monoplazas, de “Grandes Premios”, de la fórmula Grand Prix o de lo que queráis, pero hasta 1950 no nace la F1. En 1912, Peugeot crea un modelo monoplaza de Gran Premio, no de F1 obviamente, que montaba un motor revolucionario y que se adelantó decenios a otros: el L76. 2. Bugatti Type 32 “Tank”. Aerodinámica (1923). El 2 de julio de 1923 Bugatti, afamada marca que construía coches muy competitivos y a la vez muy bonitos, presenta en el G.P. de Francia el “Type 32” más conocido por “Tank”. Y no solo por sus formas, sino también porque los paneles de chapa iban “cosidos” con remaches… 3. Opel Rak II. Alerones (1928). En 1968 el genial Colin Chapman montó alerones a su Lotus 49B, consiguiendo que fuese mucho más competitivo. Una buena idea… pero no una idea nueva. Porque en el circuito de Avus, en Berlín, Opel presentó su modelo RAKII con 24 cohetes de combustible sólido y dos prominentes alerones… 4. Mónaco Trossi T34. Tracción delantera (1935). Confieso, y los más fieles seguidores lo sabréis, que tengo debilidad por este coche, una locura, fruto de la mente de Augusto Mónaco. Este monoplaza tenía muchas originalidades. A la vista, la primera que se ve, es su motor radial directamente llegado desde el mundo aeronáutico. 5. Jaguar Type C. Frenos de disco (1952). Os podría decir que todos, y si no todos el 99 por ciento de los coches actuales utilizan frenos de disco. Pero el primer coche en utilizarlos no fue un F1 sino un coche casi de calle, un Gran Turismo, el Jaguar Type C que llevó Sir Stirling Moss en la “Mille Miglia” de 1952. 6. Mercedes 300 SLR. Freno aerodinámico (1955). En este vídeo vamos a hablar mucho de aerodinámica. El Mercedes 300 SLR además de ser un cochazo, utilizo un freno aerodinámico. El coche era una joya, con un motor de 8 cilindros en línea, inyección directa, 3 litros y 300 CV. 7. Chaparral 2E. Alerón (1966). No tan conocido como Carrol Shelby o Colin Chapman, para mi Jim Hall es un genio a su altura. A mediados de los años 60 disputaba con sus coches el Campeonato Can-Am, del que por cierto también hay video titulado "Can-Am, más rápidos que los F1”. 8. Chaparral 2J. “Aspirador” (1970). ¡Y ya lo creo que lo tuvo! Por qué en 1970 utilizo dos ventiladores de 27 pulgadas provenientes de un tanque, el “M109 Hotwitzer” y les acopló un motor de moto de nieve de 45 CV. Estos ventiladores succionaban el aire del suelo y pegaban al Chaparral como se pega tu aspirador cuando lo pasas por el suelo. 9. Porsche 936 Spyder. Turbo (1976). Porsche comenzó a usar el turbo en circuitos de forma casi experimental en sus 908. Eran coches rápidos y eficaces, pero con falta de potencia. La llegada del turbo les dio alas, pero complicó la vida a los pilotos, por su grandísimo tiempo de respuesta. 10. Audi Quattro. Tracción total (1980). Y acabamos con un coche que realmente hizo historia. Y eso que estaba hecho de “retales”: Carrocería de Audi Coupé, transmisión del VW Iltis de TT y motor del Golf GTi, con un cilindro más y turbo. Coche del día. Voy a elegir el Renault Alpine A442B Turbo vencedor de las 24 Horas de Le Mans de 1978. Me declaro bastante “Porchista” y más en esa época, pero los A440 y A442 diseñados por el genial André de Cortanze, ingeniero y también piloto, me encantan.

In dieser Folge werden noch weitere, ungestellte Fragen beantwortet: was ist heute vom Vergnügungszentrum Lunapark übrig? Wie sieht eine Shimmy-Treppe aus? Hay personas que no se complican la vida: ¿Qué quieren más potencia? Pues metes un motor de avión en un coche y asunto concluido. Y así han nacido coches con cerca de 50.000 cm3, casi 1.000 CV, de 16 cilindros, con turbinas y hasta con cohetes… Algunos de carreras, otros para ir por la calle, pero todos, sin excepción, impresionantes. 1. Fiat Mefistofele (1921) Ernest Eldridge desarrolló un automóvil que, gracias a un motor de 240 CV procedente de un avión, era capaz de alcanzar 150 Km/h… en 1921. Pero a Eldridge le parecía poco y consiguió un propulsor Fiat de aviación de seis cilindros, 21.706 cm3 y 350 CV a 1.800 rpm. 2. BMW Brutus (1925) El nombre le viene al pelo. Porque alguien tuvo la brillante idea de “dejar caer” un motor V12 de 47 litros de cilindrada procedente de un avión en un chasis de coche. y “voilà”, nació el Brutus, con 750 CV a 1.700 rpm y un consumo, más o menos, de un litro por kilómetro…. ¿Crisis? ¿Quién dijo crisis? 3. Opel RAK II (1928) ¿Motores de avión? Eso es poco…. ¡cohetes! RAK viene de la palabra Raketten, que significa cohete en alemán y eran modelos que iban sobre raíles y con los que se querían batir diversos récords de velocidad, algo muy apreciado entonces en Alemania. Y fue Fritz von Opel, el nieto del fundador de la marca el que se presentó en el circuito de Avus, en Berlín con el Rak 2. 4. Napier-Railton (1933) Comparado con el Brutus el motor Napier de 12 cilindros en W, 23,9 litros y 580 CV a 2.600 rpm puede parecer poca cosa. Pero permitió a este coche conseguir 47 récords de velocidad entre 1933 y 1935. Uno de ellos aún vigente, en el circuito de Brooklands, en Surrey -Reino Unido-, porque este trazado dejó de usarse en los años previos a la II Guerra Mundial. Y, además, era un coche bonito. 5. Mónaco Trossi T34 (1935) El artífice de este Monstruo fue Carlo Felice Trossi que se le ocurrió meter un motor 2T de aviación con 16 cilindros y 250 CV al frente de un monoplaza… y para completar la originalidad, con tracción delantera. El coche es curioso, precioso y absolutamente ineficaz. 6. Fiat Turbina (1954) Este coche es el primero de la lista pensado para producirse en serie. Y es que Fiat empezó a investigar en 1948 aunque el Fiat Turbina no fue presentado hasta 1954. 7. Renault Étoile Filante (1956) “Estrella fugaz” … hasta el nombre de este coche me gusta. Y es que tengo debilidad por este “platillo volante” con cuatro ruedas. El jefe de Renault, Pierre Lefaucheux encargó desarrollar un prototipo con aerodinámica carroceríade fibra, una estructura tubular y una turbina de 270 CV. 8. GM Firebird III (1956) Segundo intento de esta lista de hacer un coche de producción con motor de avión, concretamente con turbina. Y no escatimaron esfuerzos: La carrocería era de titanio, contaba con cuatro frenos de disco por primera vez en un coche americano, el habitáculo era una mampara de plexiglás y, por supuesto, quemaba queroseno… 9. Chrysler Turbine Car (1962) Este sí que fue un intento serio de producir en serie un coche con motor de avión. El Chrysler Turbine Car fue construido entre 1962 y 1964. La carrocería era un diseño del carrocero italiano Ghia y la turbina rendía 130 CV. 10. Rover BRM (1963) Una marca que me encanta BRM o Brittish Racing Motors, tenía ideas originales. Pensaban que las turbinas, eran termodinámicamente mucho más eficientes que los motores de combustión. Y se les ocurrió hacer un modelo con motor de avión, una turbina, para correr las 24 horas de Le Mans en los años 1963 y 1964. 11. La Bestia (1966) Sus credenciales: Mide 5,7 metros de largo, tiene un motor V12 de avión de 750 CV y nada menos que 27.000 centímetros cúbicos. No está mal, ¿verdad? Paul Jameson instaló un motor Rolls-Royce de 27 litros de cubicaje en un chasis que había hecho poco menos que en casa. Consiguió que John Dodd, especialista en transmisiones automáticas, le construyese una caja de cambios… y así nació “La Bestia”. 12. Lotus 56B 4WD (1971) Con motor de avión a turbina y tracción total. Y es que si ha habido alguien con capacidad de innovar y arriesgar en la F1 ese ha sido Colin Chapman. En 1967 diseño el Lotus 56 un precioso monoplaza en forma de cuña, motor de turbina y tracción total para las 500 Millas de Indianápolis. A pesar de cierta fragilidad, el resultado fue esperanzador pero lo prohibieron. 12+1. Toyota GTV (1987) El ejemplo más moderno es el Toyota GTV presentado en el Salón del automóvil de Tokio de 1987, un modelo que fue un banco de pruebas basado en el Supra, pero con turbina de gas. Contaba con dos turbinas, cada una con 150 CV a 53.000 rpm y simplemente fue eso, un banco de pruebas… Conclusión. ¡Me encantan estos coches! Y sé que me faltan unos cuantos, sobre todo de competición como el STP Paxton y caza récords como el Bleu Flame.… a lo mejor hay que hacer segunda parte.

Marina und Ewa sind Modedesignerinnen aus Berlin, die ihre Namen zu Modemarken gemacht haben. Marina Hoermanseder gehört zu den bekanntesten Designerinnen des Landes. Sie ist berühmt für ihre Lederteile und Schnallendetails. Man sieht Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj und Kylie Jenner darin, gleichzeitig kooperiert sie mit Hello Kitty, Rossmann, Buffalo und ist bei GNTM zu sehen. Marinas Schnalle ist überall. Bei ihrer Mode fällt mir zuerst das Wort “extravagant” ein. Ewa Herzog kreiert zeitgenössische Klassiker und luxuriöse Basics. Ewas Garderobe ist zeitlos. Sie designed Abend- und Sommerkleider, die leicht und fließend und sehr gegensätzlich zu Marina Hoermanseder sind. Ich habe Marina und Ewa allerdings nicht eingeladen, um vordergründig über ihre Mode zu sprechen, sondern über das, was sie seit Ende Februar, seit dem Kriegsbeginn in der Ukraine, geleistet haben. Über 1.000 Tonnen Nahrung und Kleidung haben sie gesammelt und auf 35 LKWs in die Ukraine transportieren lassen. Wir sprechen über diese letzten zwei Wochen an der Avus-Raststätte vor Berlin, über die Überforderung, aber auch die schönen Momente. Für mich stehen Marina und Ewa stellvertretend für die vielen Helferinnen und Helfer der letzten Wochen, die ihren Alltag liegen lassen haben, um zu helfen. So eben auch Ewa und Marina, die statt im warmen Atelier auf der kalten Raststätte standen. Warum haben sie das gemacht? Ewa kommt ursprünglich aus der Ukraine. Ich wollte wissen, wie sie auf die Ereignisse schaut. Wie sehr kann, sollte oder muss man sich für ein Land einsetzen? Es ist natürlich nicht einfach, auch für mich als Fragensteller war es das nicht. Wie fragt man? Was antwortet man? Es sind wackelige Zeiten, wir müssen erst Worte finden. Wir sprechen über Vorurteile gegenüber der Modewelt und Frauen mit langen manikürten Fingernägeln und Cartier-Armbändern. Ich habe einen kleinen Einblick in ihren normalen Modealltag und einen Ausblick für ihre gemeinnützige Arbeit bekommen. Denn die Avus war nur der Anfang. A short walk from Berlin's Bradenberg gate, sat a most bizarre and terrifying racing circuit-Avus. In its most extreme form, Avus stretched for twelve miles and consisted of two endless straights. Bookended by a curve at either side, this road going superspeedway lay in the shadows of a city ravaged by political anguish. Avus became one of the first roads on earth to be surfaced with asphalt and members of the public could take a lap for a modest ten Reichsmarks. Although racing began at the Berlin circuit in 1921, Avus gained its most notorious feature in 1936.    While the circuit hosted the 1936 Berlin Olympics cycle races, the enormous banked North Curve was erected, ready for racing to return in 1937. At a towering 43 degrees, the North Curve banking was soon dubbed ‘The Wall of Death'. Grand prix machines from Mercedes and Auto Union could swoop through the North Curve almost flat out. In 1937, Bernd Rosemeyer lapped the 11.98-mile circuit in his Auto Union at a staggering 171.74 miles per hour. Thirty-one years passed before Graham Hill matched this dizzying speed at the 1968 Indianapolis 500.

Geschwindigkeitsrausch, waghalsige Rennen und schwere Unfälle - die Avus war einst die schnellste und gefährlichste Rennstrecke der Welt. Heute rasen nur noch die BerlinerInnen die A115 entlang - mit Tempolimit. Jakob Rüger blickt zurück auf 100 Jahre Geschichte der Avus.

Im 19. Jahrhundert prägte die Zugfahrt durch ihre Geschwindigkeit ein Zeitalter, wurde aber, wie wir sehr schön dem heutigen Artikel aus dem Berliner Börsen-Courier vom 24. September 1921 entnehmen können, vom Automobil abgelöst. Der Autor Friedrich Otto besuchte die AVUS und raste in der Position des Technikers, der damals im Auto mitfuhr, um sofort, auf der Strecke, Schäden beheben zu können, in einem Rennwagen der Marke Nationale Automobil Gesellschaft, kurz NAG, mit. Seine akustischen, visuellen und körperlichen Eindrücke schildert für uns Frank Riede.

Um die rückständigen deutschen Automobile wettbewerbsfähiger zu machen, wird 1909 in Berlin die "Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungsstraße GmbH" (AVUS) gegründet. Fertiggestellt wird die Fahrbahn allerdings erst im September 1921 - und auch dann läuft noch nicht alles rund.

Zehn Kilometer lang, bis auf zwei gefährliche Kehren schnurgerade – die Rennstrecke Avus versprach den Berlinern vor allem eins: Spektakel. 1921 gebaut, wurde sie 1940 für alle Autos freigegeben. Der Berliner Senat hat die Entscheidung erstmal vertagt, ob 2G in der Gastronomie und bei Veranstaltungen in Berlin kommen soll oder nicht. In Hamburg gibt es die Regelung bereits - da können Veranstalter und Gastronomen selbst entscheiden, ob sie nur noch Geimpfte und Genesene reinlassen wollen.
