Throughout the various ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, western news outlets have repeatedly blamed their failure on Hamas. This week, we hear a perspective that rarely features in the coverage - the group's own - on the negotiations and the media narratives that surround them. In April, 250 former Israeli intelligence officers signed their names to an open letter of protest asking Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to proceed with his plans to escalate the war on Gaza. One of them was Tamir Pardo, head of Mossad, Israel's equivalent of the CIA, from 2011 to 2016. Pardo, with his decades of experience fighting terrorism, explains his perspective on how the war unfolded and what Netanyahu's real motivations are behind continuing it. -- Get more from your favorite Atlantic voices when you subscribe. The Israeli government's push to transform the media landscape has been described by critics as a “hostile takeover” that poses a threat to press freedom. The Global Jigsaw takes a look at what people in Israel see about the war in Gaza on their TV screens. We examine the methods and the motives behind the prime minister's media squeeze, and ask what this means for the country priding itself on being "the only democracy" in the Middle East.
Zionists and their defenders frequently point to the indoctrination children in the West Bank and Gaza are subjected to as proof that Palestinians are raised from birth to hate Jews generally, and Israelis specifically. Yet if you watch a recent interview Benjamin Netanyahu gave to a young Israeli boy — and specifically how the Israeli Prime Minister described the conflict with Hamas -- it would be difficult to conclude anything other than that Netanyahu himself is engaging in rank propaganda and indoctrination. Guest hosts Russell Dobular and Keaton Weiss discuss with guest Dr. Gabor Maté what Netanyahu says to the child interviewer and why it's so difficult to break Jews away from this kind of programming. Plus segments on the recent Boulder, Colorado improvised flamethrower attack, Jon Stewart raking Jake Tapper over the coals for his crappy “journalism” and DNC official David Hogg caught on video calling out Nancy Pelosi's corruption. Also featuring Kurt Metzger and Mike MacRae. And a phone call from Andrew Cuomo!
Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman and reporter Ariela Karmel join host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. As hostage family members met with members of the Trump administration in the White House on Tuesday, Berman discusses the latest developments in the hostage negotiations, as Hamas continues to leverage the remaining living hostages for political gain while negotiators say Hamas must accept US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff's latest proposal. He also looks at Iran's rejection of the nuclear deal proposal, after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the US proposal for a nuclear agreement went against the country’s national interest of continuing to enrich uranium. Berman notes that Iran wants a deal of some kind, particularly one that will protect them against future Israeli attacks, and is continuing to negotiate, with another round slated for this weekend. Berman describes one of the aid sites in Gaza that was created by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, and the complications of funneling Gazans into the space to receive their aid packages. He notes that the aid centers are closed today to fine-tune the process and prepare safe access routes after the IDF opened fire toward Palestinians who had approached troops after straying off a pre-approved path for reaching a Rafah distribution site. Berman also looks at Spain and its decision to cancel another arms deal with Israel, spiking a $325 million system that would have been developed in Spain by Pap Tecnos, a subsidiary of Israel’s Rafael Advance Defense Systems. Berman discusses that Spain is a long-time critic of Israel’s policies toward Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, and that it may be following other European countries with this step. Karmel speaks about ongoing government settlement policies that incentivize Israelis to move to the West Bank due to rising housing costs inside Israel, and how that situation has been concretized by members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government. She also relates the launch of a book by released hostage Eli Sharabi, the first book by a former hostage, and his determination to keep living despite the personal tragedies he has experienced. Trump has been making some foreign policy moves I didn't entirely expect. He seems determined to get a nuclear deal with Iran. He's been public about his disagreements with Benjamin Netanyahu. He called Vladimir Putin “crazy.” And he keeps talking about wanting his legacy to be that of a peacemaker. So what, at this point, can we say about Trump's foreign policy? What is he trying to do, and how well is it working? If he succeeds, what might his legacy be? Emma Ashford is a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, a foreign policy think tank, and the author of the forthcoming book “First Among Equals.” She comes from a school of thought that's more sympathetic to the “America First” agenda than I typically am. But she's also cleareyed about what is and isn't working and the ways that Trump is an idiosyncratic foreign policy maker who isn't always following an “America First” agenda himself.

In Episode 11 of Geopolitics with Ghost, Ghost dives into a chaotic international landscape marked by power vacuums, realignment, and narrative collapse. He begins with the stunning visual of the American flag raised once again over Damascus, signaling potential diplomatic restoration between the U.S. and Syria. Ghost unpacks the implications of this move in the context of Arab League reintegration and shifting allegiances in the Middle East. The episode then turns to Israel, where Netanyahu's fragile coalition teeters amid pressure from both domestic unrest and international negotiations with Hamas. Ghost explores the realpolitik behind the hostage talks, the future of Israeli leadership, and whether the U.S. is quietly stepping back from unconditional support. In Asia, the conversation moves to Putin's multi-vector diplomacy, including outreach to North Korea and Central Asia, and how Trump's economic and military posture may be shaping new alliances. Tensions around Taiwan, U.S. base repositioning, and questions about Japan's sovereignty also make the docket. With his signature clarity and historical insight, Ghost weaves together Syria, Israel, Russia, and China to illustrate the broader dismantling of the unipolar world, and the unpredictable road to whatever comes next. A must-listen for those tracking the silent reordering of global power.

Using fake NGOs, the intelligence agencies of US and Israel are attempting to create a trojan horse to install concentration camps for starving Palestinians in Gaza, with the long-term objective of ethnically cleansing and exterminating what remains of the native Palestinian population. Friday Focus provides listeners with a focused, half-hour masterclass on the big issues, events and trends driving the news and current events. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. Rudyard and Janice begin today's show by unpacking last night's sold out Munk Debate where Ezra Klein and Ben Rhodes debated Kevin Roberts and Kellyanne Conway about whether America has entered its golden age. It was a surprising show of civility between the debaters, and both Rudyard and Janice agree that a debate of this kind could not have taken place in the U.S. In the second half of the show they turn to the Middle East where Israel is hinting at a willingness to strike Iran's nuclear facilities against the wishes of the U.S. How will this impact ongoing nuclear negotiations between America and Iran? What role is Saudi Arabia playing in trying to prevent a war between these two rivals? And will Netanyahu go against Trump's explicit wishes, alienating its most important ally? Early on, it was clear the Beinin-Atzili family was not a typical hostage family, filmmaker Brandon Kramer, director of the new award-winning documentary “Holding Liat” said on the Haaretz Podcast. After learning that his relatives, Liat and Aviv Atzili, had been kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7 and held hostage by Hamas, and that Liat’s father and son were traveling to Washington, D.C. several weeks later with other Israeli-American hostage families to lobby on behalf of their loved ones, Kramer knew he had to document the visit. As he began to film what would become “Holding Liat” – which won Best Documentary upon its debut at the Berlinale Film Festival and is about to make its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival – Kramer noticed that their family’s experience “didn't fit neatly into any box.” Yehuda Beinin, Liat’s father, was openly calling for peace and reconciliation, and opposing the forceful military response the Israeli government was planning - from the start. At the same time, Kramer explains, “His grandson Netta – who had barely survived the attacks and was traumatized and very angry – and his other daughter, Tal, didn’t want to speak about politics at all. So within this one family, we saw a microcosm of the debates and fractures, and we felt we had a responsibility to try to make sense of this moment through this one family's lens.” Also speaking on the podcast, one of the film’s producers, Libby Lenkinski, noted that the authenticity of “Holding Liat” held it apart from the slew of October 7 documentaries designed with a political agenda that comprise “hour-and-a-half long visual op-eds” focused on making either a pro-Israel or pro-Palestinian case. At the same time, Yehuda, the film’s focus, “is a really great example of something that we see often on the left – a person warning about what might be coming and initially being thought of as alarmist or paranoid, and it turning out to be true.” When Yehuda was filmed in the first months of the war, warning that Netanyahu would pursue a brutal and endless war to serve a far-right political agenda, “I don’t think any of us could have imagined the kind of devastation that we would be seeing in Gaza, the endless killing and destruction. I think so many Israelis wanted to believe that this was necessary to bring back the hostages, and now it's just so clear that that was never the point. …Yehuda called out Bibi's bluff early on, and it turned out to be truer than we ever would have wanted to believe.” Subscribe to Haaretz.com for up-to-the-minute news and analysis from Israel in English. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US military reporter Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. US special envoy to the Mideast Steve Witkoff says he has “some very good feelings” about the chances for reaching a temporary ceasefire that leads to a long-term resolution to the conflict in Gaza. Magid explains what could be on the table and why Witkoff is expressing optimism despite long-time Israeli and Hamas intransigence. The Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said Wednesday it had successfully opened its second aid distribution center in southern Gaza, after the launch of its first site a day earlier descended into chaos when crowds stormed the facility. International media is reporting shootings and deaths at the first aid center this week. Magid attempts to make order of the chaos. The United Arab Emirates rebuked Israel over this week’s Jerusalem Flag March, characterizing it as an “annual spectacle of unchecked violence and extremist provocation” and issuing a rare warning against Israel if Jerusalem doesn’t take “decisive steps” against the phenomenon. Magid explains why summoning of Israel's envoy -- only the second time the UAE has taken this measure -- is so significant even as several of Israel's allies are openly condemning the Jewish state. US President Donald Trump confirms that he asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a call last week not to take military action against Iran that could disrupt Washington’s ongoing nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Republic. Magid describes the differing accounts of the phone call. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Tara Servatius breaks down the high-stakes tension between Iran, Israel, and the United States in this fiery segment of The Tara Show. With Iran's nuclear ambitions back in the spotlight, Trump's alleged opposition to Netanyahu's proposed strike on Iranian nuclear facilities has raised eyebrows—especially after years of saber-rattling from both sides. Tara questions the logic of waiting on a deal with a regime that has repeatedly vowed to destroy Israel and assassinate Trump himself. She highlights the history of Democratic administrations enabling Iran through lifted sanctions and billions in funding, while Israel remains under constant threat from Iranian-backed proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah. From internal unrest in Iran to secret back-channel talks and the geopolitical powder keg brewing in the Middle East, Tara argues it's time to stop tying Israel's hands—and start asking why Democrats seem more aligned with the Ayatollahs than America's own allies.
The continued assault of the Israeli armed forces amid a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has drawn global criticism. Yet the question remains – who will intervene to end the conflict and restrain Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu? Donald Trump's recent trip to the Middle East saw the US President looking to broker deals in the region - including the potential for a new deal with Israel's rivals Iran. But is Trump also willing to take a new approach to intervene over Gaza? Today's Headlines: Tensions appear to be rising between Trump and Putin, with Trump acknowledging for the first time that Putin may not want peace in Ukraine. Trump warned that Putin is “playing with fire,” prompting a veiled threat from a top Russian official referencing World War III. Meanwhile, Trump reportedly warned Israeli PM Netanyahu not to sabotage U.S.–Iran nuclear talks, fearing unilateral action from Israel. In Canada, King Charles delivered a pointed speech defending democracy and international cooperation, widely interpreted as a jab at Trump. Trump later suggested Canada should become a U.S. state to benefit from his proposed (and likely fictional) “golden dome” missile shield. Trump also issued several controversial pardons, including for reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley and Florida nursing home exec Paul Walczak—whose mother donated $1M to Trump and attended a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser. In other news, HHS Secretary RFK Jr. announced that COVID vaccines will no longer be recommended for pregnant women and healthy children, despite no supporting data and warnings from medical experts. Lastly, the Trump administration suspended all international student visa processing, citing plans to expand social media screening—just days after trying to block international enrollment at Harvard. In this episode of the Bill Press Pod, our own foreign policy expert, Joe Cirincione, discussed several pressing foreign policy issues. Cirincione is a National Security Analyst with decades of experience in DC. They began by touching on King Charles' historic visit to Canada for the parliamentary opening—a gesture seen as supportive of Canada amid criticism from Donald Trump. They then shifted focus to Trump's peculiar interest in Greenland, interpreting it as a potential financial motivation rather than geopolitical strategy. The conversation moved towards the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where Russia launched its largest attacks in three years. Cirincione criticized Trump's lack of military support for Ukraine and highlighted the strategic miscalculations of both Trump and Putin, suggesting that Putin is manipulating Trump for his own benefit. They also talked about the leadership of Ukrainian President Zelensky, praising his resilience in the face of adversity, and provided insights into the situation in Gaza. Cirincione described the Israeli military strategy under Netanyahu as destructive, with plans to essentially depopulate Gaza. The discussion also touched on the U.S.'s dwindling support for its NATO allies, suggesting that Europe may need to step up and take independent action in global politics, particularly given Trump's erratic foreign policy.Today's Bill Press Pod is supported by The American Federation of Teachers.
