The Power Pause: Rethinking Career Breaks After Kids with Neha Ruch

    Girlboss Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 1, 2026 38:29

Neha Ruch built her career in brand strategy—an MBA from Stanford, a fast climb on the corporate ladder, and a title she loved. Then she paused her career after her second child and spent the years since rebranding what a career pause actually looks like for ambitious women.  In her book, The Power Pause, Neha makes the case that stepping back from paid work isn't the opposite of ambition. It's a chapter of it. She also reframes the “stay-at-home mom” label, citing survey results showing outdated stereotypes (like apron-clad June Cleaver from Leave It to Beaver), and argues modern parenthood is more fluid with technology, networks, and involved partners.  Whether you're actively wondering, "Do I quit my job? Do I take a pause? What should I do?", or if family planning is somewhere on your radar for the next few years, or if kids aren't even part of the picture yet—this conversation is worth having early. Neha and Amanda get into how to come out the other side of a power pause with a stronger sense of self, a real community, and clarity on what's next, well before you're right in the thick of it. Key Takeaways A "power pause" is deliberately shifting time and energy toward family for a chapter, while still holding onto a sense of self and community. The most common image people associate with "stay-at-home mom" (June Cleaver) versus "working mom" (Michelle Obama, Sheryl Sandberg, Beyoncé) shows just how outdated and polarized our cultural narrative around motherhood still is. A good partner is someone who can have difficult conversations and makes you feel safe having conflict, not someone who avoids hard topics altogether. Career pauses don't have to mean fully leaving the workforce; they can look like part-time work, consulting, freelancing, or simply deprioritizing taking on demanding projects for a season. Tracking small wins during a pause can become a real, resume-worthy experience when you're ready to return to work. How to know when it's time to return to work and how to market your power pause on LinkedIn. Working moms, stay-at-home moms, and everyone on a power pause are part of the same ecosystem, not opposing sides, and supporting each other is what actually moves the conversation forward. FRIEND ZONED? 5 Easy Steps to Make Her See You as Boyfriend Material

In this shocking episode of The Unapologetic Man Podcast, host Mark Sing hands you the exact playbook to flip a "we're just friends" situation into something real, and it starts with doing the opposite of everything your instincts are telling you to do. Most guys try to win her affection through favors and gifts, hoping she'll eventually notice how great they are. Mark explains why that approach guarantees you stay her friend forever, and walks through the five steps that actually work instead, starting with something as simple as telling her outright that you're just friends. Key Takeaways: Why trying to win her over with gifts and favors backfires every time Why telling her "we're just friends" is the move that flips the script and gets her chasing you Why letting her see you dating other women pulls her in even harder When to finally let her know you're interested, and why timing is everything Key Timestamps: [00:00:00] – Episode Intro [00:00:56] – The friend-zone story that kicks it all off [00:02:20] – Step 1: Friend-zoning her first [00:04:08] – Step 2: Cutting off the favors and the chasing [00:10:23] – Step 3: Showing value without showing interest [00:12:29] – Step 4: Dating other women openly [00:14:46] – Client success stories [00:16:50] – Step 5: Letting her know you like her, at the right time [00:21:44] – Episode Outro  Connect With Mark: Apply for Mark's 3-Month Coaching Program: https://coachmarksing.com/coaching/ Check Out The Perks Program: https://coachmarksing.com/perks/ Email: CoachMarkSing@Gmail.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachmarksing/ Grab Mark's Free Program: The Approach Formula - https://www.CoachMarkSing.com/The-Approach-Formula   About The Unapologetic Man Podcast The Unapologetic Man Podcast is your resource for mastering dating, attraction, and relationships from a confident, masculine perspective. This week, the crew kicks things off with a new studio setup before Mason unleashes on one of his greatest enemies: cyclists taking over country roads. Are bicycles entitled to the road, or should spandex warriors be restricted to bike lanes and 25 MPH neighborhoods? Things escalate quickly. From there, the conversation gets even stranger. The guys revisit classic Colt 45 and St. Ides malt liquor commercials, including Billy Dee Williams' legendary "works every time" advertising and the absolutely insane era when rappers were selling malt liquor on TV. They also remember sneaking their first tastes of beer, liquor and black coffee as kids — and immediately wondering why adults willingly drank any of it. Then comes the smell nobody wants: Mike's encounter with a porta-potty cleaning operation and the dreaded "duty mist." Somehow, that leads to burning research monkeys, getting smuggled onto job sites without a badge, hiding in a car trunk for work, and more questionable employment stories. Mike also explains exactly why he does NOT want another dog, triggering a full debate about dogs in the house, pets on furniture, cats walking across kitchen counters, irresponsible pet ownership, Cane Corsos, piranhas and the enormous responsibility that comes with owning an animal. It's exactly what you've come to expect from the rickety ship: ridiculous stories, arguments, nostalgia, questionable opinions and three friends finding the funny side of life.

In part Two of this weeks episode of So Shameless, the crew gets into dating, gender roles, friendship boundaries and what actually counts as disrespect when you're in a relationship. Should men be expected to handle the traditionally masculine things while women handle the feminine things in a relationship—or are those expectations outdated? We also debate whether men ruin friendships with women by eventually wanting sex, and whether a woman planning AND paying for the third date is showing healthy interest or doing way too much, way too soon. Plus, do men take women who are constantly dating different people seriously when it comes time to choose a relationship? Paris opens up about her history of dating the “fun guys”—men who are into clubs, bars, cars, clothes and the lifestyle—and whether choosing excitement over stability may have been working against her. Then we get into social media relationship boundaries: Is a man liking other women's pictures on Instagram harmless, or is it disrespectful to his relationship? Finally, the crew reacts to Funky Dineva's controversial comments about parents bringing autistic children into public spaces where people have a “reasonable expectation of peace,” including restaurants and airplanes—and whether expecting that kind of “peace” in a shared public space is reasonable in the first place. Dating expectations. Gender roles. Friendship. Social media. Relationship boundaries. And another conversation where the cast of So Shameless and their guests probably aren't going to agree on anything. Enjoy!

Your 12-year-old announces they’re dating someone. There’s hand-holding, constant texting and plenty of “love you” messages. Do you shut it down, set rules or stay out of it? Justin and Kylie unpack early teenage romance and why keeping your child talking to you matters more than trying to monitor every interaction. They explain what “dating” often means at this age, how to protect friendships and school life, and how to set boundaries without pushing the relationship underground. KEY POINTS Romantic interest commonly ramps up around ages 11 to 12. Before reacting, ask your child what “dating” actually means to them. Open disclosure from your child is more valuable than trying to monitor everything they do. Watch whether the relationship starts replacing friendships, activities or school responsibilities. Trying to ban the relationship completely may simply push it underground. Talk about what respectful relationships look like, including helping the other person feel safe and strong. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “As long as you can have an open dialogue, then you have influence.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Developmental psychology research on early adolescent romantic relationships Research by Stattin and Kerr on parental monitoring and child disclosure Happy Families website and podcast question submission ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Get curious first. Ask what “dating” means to your child before deciding how worried you need to be. Keep them talking. Protect the relationship that makes your child comfortable telling you what’s happening. Set clear expectations. Explain your family’s boundaries around dating without turning the conversation into command and control. Watch the bigger picture. Notice changes in friendships, schoolwork, extracurricular activities and family life. Talk about respect. Teach your child what it means to make another person feel safe, respected and valued. Try side-by-side conversations. A walk, drive or other low-pressure moment can make sensitive conversations easier. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What happens when you finally stop people-pleasing and start trusting your own intuition? How can the confidence you build through dance and cheerleading transform the way you show up in your career, relationships, and even your relationship with your body? And is finding your voice and learning to use it the secret to opening yourself up to love again? In Episode 457 of The Charisma Quotient, "Bathroom Confessions of Former NFL Cheerleaders: Dating Real Talk Secrets," Kimmy is back with part two of her unexpected interview series recorded in the women's bathroom at the National Football Cheerleading Alumni Reunion in Miami. What started as an accidental interview location continues to deliver raw, hilarious, and surprisingly powerful conversations with former NFL cheerleaders about confidence, identity, relationships, and reinvention. One former Miami Dolphins cheerleader opens up about how dance became her joy, helping her navigate toxic environments and eventually recognize the importance of trusting her intuition, setting boundaries, and becoming a recovering people pleaser. She shares the realization that saying yes when you really mean no isn't actually being kind, and why learning that "no" can be a complete sentence changed the way she shows up in her life and relationships. But it doesn't end there. Kimmy sits down with Sarah Martin, who helped break the height barrier for Miami Dolphins cheerleaders after learning the team was finally opening auditions to women under 5'6". Sarah shares how her Filipino upbringing shaped her younger, more submissive self, why her father initially didn't want her to cheer, and how she walked into an audition with more than 500 women convinced she'd be home by lunchtime, only to make the team. She even gives Kimmy an impromptu Hawaiian dance lesson that reveals an unexpected connection between dance, sensuality, feminine energy, and flirting. Then Kimmy meets Terri Gayhardt, who went from an incredibly shy little girl who wouldn't even yell during cheers to becoming a professional Baltimore Colts cheerleader at just 16 years old. Terri shares the historic legacy of the Baltimore Colts cheerleaders, how cheerleading helped her find her voice and become a confident, empowered woman, and what happened when the fairytale of marrying the football player didn't turn out quite as planned. After raising five children and helping raise her grandchildren, Terri gets real about catfishing, matchmaking disappointments, dating later in life, and Kimmy gives her a challenge to start flexing those flirting muscles again. You'll Hear: Why learning to say no and letting go of your people pleasing tendencies can create healthier, more balanced relationships. How body acceptance changes with age and why loving yourself now matters more than waiting until you look different. A live lesson on the art (and empowerment) of hula dance, including its sensual, physical, and storytelling elements The surprising connection between dance, feminine energy, sensuality, body language, and flirting. How Terri Gayhardt went from painfully shy to becoming a professional Baltimore Colts cheerleader at just 16 and eventually finding her voice as a confident, empowered woman. Real talk about divorce, catfishing, matchmaking, dating later in life, and why flirting is a skill you can practice at any age. If you've been feeling disconnected from your confidence, your femininity, or the woman you see in the mirror, Kimmy has some things coming up that you'll want to join… If you're looking for a simple place to start, join her for her live co-ed Flirting Made Easy Workshop, at the end of the month where you'll learn and practice her proven formula to flirting in your 40s, 50s, and beyond!  Go to stophatingdating.com to register! This episode of Hustle Inspires Hustle features Alex Quin and Gina Ulmos, media personality, journalist, podcast host, and author of Mis 200 Citas. Gina reflects on her decades-long career across television, Univision, and radio, and how an unexpected career transition gave her the opportunity to reinvent herself as an author. She shares how nearly 200 real dating experiences after a 16-year marriage, combined with lessons from therapists, psychologists, love coaches, and her own interviews, ultimately inspired her book.Alex and Gina dive into modern dating, Bumble, first-date expectations, red flags, personal safety, scams, self-worth, and how social media has changed the way relationships begin. They also discuss Gina's experiences interviewing major figures like Cristiano Ronaldo, how her journalism background helps her read and vet people, and why cultural compatibility and life experience matter in relationships. Ultimately, the conversation goes beyond dating to explore reinvention, embracing uncomfortable change, and why it's never too late to start a new chapter in your career or personal life.Episode Outline:[00:00] Meet Gina Ulmos and the story behind Mis 200 Citas[04:25] Leaving radio and turning life experiences into a book[09:00] 200 dates, Bumble, rejection, and finding love online[13:30] First-date expectations, money, boundaries, and red flags[18:20] Dating safety and protecting yourself when meeting strangers[23:30] How Alex met his wife and Instagram vs. dating apps[28:25] Self-worth, childhood patterns, and choosing better partners[35:05] Interviewing Cristiano Ronaldo and using journalism skills in dating[39:00] Vetting dates, background checks, scams, and trusting your instincts[41:05] Cultural compatibility, travel, relationships, and Mexico[46:05] Career reinvention, losing your safety net, and embracing change[49:00] Why it's never too late to find love[50:52] Closing thoughts and outroWisdom Nuggets:Don't Ignore the Red Flags Because You Like the Person: Attraction can make people justify behavior they would immediately recognize as problematic in someone else. Pay attention to inconsistencies, pressure, dishonesty, and actions that don't match someone's words.Treat Dating Like an Interview: Gina learned from a love coach to think about dating similarly to filling an important position. Would you keep interviewing someone who consistently shows up late, lies, acts inconsistently, or doesn't share your values? Chemistry shouldn't eliminate standards.Self-Worth Changes Who You Choose: The relationships we pursue can reflect how we see ourselves. Understanding childhood experiences, emotional patterns, boundaries, and what you're actually searching for can help prevent repeating the same relationships with different people.Losing Your Safety Net Can Create Your Next Chapter: Leaving a stable media career was uncomfortable for Gina, but it also created the time and urgency that helped her finally write her book. Sometimes the change you didn't ask for becomes the push you needed. You Either Win or You Learn: Not every relationship, career move, or chapter will work out the way you expected. That doesn't automatically make it wasted time. Experiences can become lessons that prepare you to make better decisions moving forward. It's Never Too Late to Find Love: Gina's own family gives her a unique perspective on modern dating across generations. Her mother encouraged her to date, Gina found her favorite person through Bumble, and her daughter also found a relationship through the platform.Power Quotes“You're not gonna land a good job, a good relationship if you don't have self-worth.” - Alex Quin“Changes are good. Scholar M. David Litwa joins the podcast to explore the intersections of Gnosticism, Hermeticism, and ancient astrology. David is a historian of early Christianity and Greco-Roman religions who recently published a new translation of the Corpus Hermeticum. Together, we trace how these esoteric traditions developed and interacted in the ancient world, particularly in the cultural melting pot of Alexandria. We discuss the emergence of Hermeticism as a synthesis of Egyptian religion and Greek philosophy, and how early Christian Gnosticism subsequently adapted many of these cosmological frameworks. A major focal point is how ancient astrology, including the ascent and descent of the soul through the planetary spheres, was integrated into these religious movements. We contrast the Gnostic view of the planets as restrictive archons keeping the soul imprisoned with the more sympathetic Hermetic view of the visible cosmos as a second God and part of divine providence. We also take a close look at the Peratics, a unique Gnostic group that integrated technical Hellenistic astrology directly into their religion in order to map the soul's escape from the material realm. Finally, we unpack the historical tensions between fate, providence, and free will, examining how early Christians navigated astrological determinism before figures like Augustine firmly pushed back against the practice. This conversation highlights the profound impact that Hellenistic astrology had on the broader philosophical and religious landscape of the ancient world. It's always a great day when our friend comedian Dylan J. Palladino stops by to allow Michelle to lightly rub him with a sisterly love we know he adores.* (we hope!) Today, we unpack Dylan's solo man-moto journey to the beaches of the Jersey Shore, and also the importance of helmets despite looking like the biggest loser alive. Michelle has foots-on-the-ground reporting from her podiatrist's office, where shirtless men dominate the waiting room and her wikifeet is being updated live from the hallway. She rewarded herself by trying on jewelry she will likely never afford, which leads one to ask what IS the deal with men and their black "carbon" wedding bands? Talk us into it! Plus, remembering sweet angel Dolly Parton, Dylan has a sheets update, and why aren't actors getting ugly anymore?!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We spend so much time fearing getting older. What if it's actually the best part? In this episode of Superwomen, I sat down with the Real Housewives of New York City alum, Dorinda Medley to discuss why getting older means more self-acceptance, what dating and friendship look like in your later years, and how life changes after the end of a marriage. We're joined by another NYC icon: Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell. All together, we reminisce about the New York of the ‘90s and 2000s, why dating was way easier back then, and how close female friendships shaped that era. If there's one thing the three women in this conversation have in common, it's that we've each lived through a lot. Let this episode be your reminder that you've got so much more ahead.
