He has aspired to become a philosopher since his days in high school. Since 1989, while specialising in Classical Western philosophy, with a special focus on Platonic philosophy, he has researched Adlerian psychology; he writes and lectures on the subject, and provides counselling for “youths” in psychiatric clinics as a certified counsellor and consultant for the Japanese Society of Adlerian Psychology. Fumitake Koga, an award-winning professional writer and author, was born in 1973. He has released numerous bestselling works of business-related and general non-fiction. He encountered Adlerian psychology in his late twenties, and was deeply affected by its conventional wisdom-defying ideas. Thereafter, Koga made numerous visits to Ichiro Kishimi in Kyoto, gleaned from him the essence of Adlerian psychology, and took down the notes for the classical “dialogue format” method of Greek philosophy that is used in this book Source: https://www.allenandunwin.com/browse/books/general-books/self-help-practical/The-Courage-to-be-Disliked-Ichiro-Kishimi-and-Fumitake-Koga-9781760630492 About the Book In this fable-style book, the core concepts of Adlerian psychology are explored and applied to everyday scenarios. It’s a huge bestseller in Asia, with over 3 million copies sold. The book is all about being the person you really want to be – by being less concerned with the opinions of others, your doubts or your past experiences. As more and more people seem to be paralysed in the limbo-land between their truest self and assumptions of others, this book provides refreshing alternative mindset and views. If you suffer with the need to please others, imposter syndrome, the joy-thief of comparison or a tendency to attribute your current situation to your previous experiences then this will provide a challenging and worthwhile perspective. This is the concept of denying trauma – even from awful life events – and recognising your have the choice on how to respond to it. For instance, just because something bad happened to you it doesn’t mean that your life will be bad as a result of it. We often see this in our own lives, or those around us today, but by denying the idea of determinism, we realize that our past does not determine our future. In some cases, we behave in a certain way to achieve a goal or live according to other people’s view. One of the biggest points shared in this book is that most of us lack the courage to be happy – because it requires change. This is why some people choose to live a miserable or unhappy life because being happy requires challenging changes. BIG IDEA 2 (6:24) – Own your tasks. Each one of us has our own tasks and we should not interfere with other people’s tasks. These three tasks are work, friendship and love. One of the most important ideas here is not looking for or seeking recognition from others – just focusing on your own tasks and our contribution to others/society. If we need other people to interfere with us, recognize us or celebrate our achievement, we are worried about what other people think about us and not who we truly want to be. This idea comes down to freedom, or the courage to be disliked. This is about not needing other people’s recognition, reward or validation to feel like we have contributed. Focus on your own tasks – work, love and friendships. BIG IDEA 3 (7:33) – All problems are all interpersonal relationship problems. Most interpersonal relationship problems (think comparison, jealousy, imposter syndrome, regret etc) are solved by first accepting yourself as you are. When we do not accept ourselves, sometimes this is used as an excuse to dislike or make assumptions about what others think. The great idea here is that you are the only who is worried about you! If we think about it, when we are only worried about ourselves, we can do more of what we really want to do. One great quote shared in the book is “We cannot alter objective facts but subjective interpretations can be altered as one likes.” Most of the things around us are purely subjective, so if someone does not like something, it’s their opinion and doesn’t matter. The book is very clear that it is not about doing things that would purposely hurt others, but that the subjective opinions of others aren’t as important and defining as we often make them out to be. REBROADCAST - over the December/January break I'm re-sharing two older episodes that are by far the most downloaded episodes of the podcast. If you missed them first time around, this is your perfect chance to catch up. Enjoy! Sign up to the bookmark newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/1119b1358a84/thebookmark About the Author Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston where she holds the Huffington Foundation – Brené Brown Endowed Chair at The Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy and is the author of five #1 New York Times bestsellers: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, Braving the Wilderness, and her latest book, Dare to Lead, which is the culmination of a seven-year study on courage and leadership. Brené’s TED talk – The Power of Vulnerability – is one of the top five most viewed TED talks in the world with over 35 million views. Brené lives in Houston, Texas with her husband, Steve, and their children, Ellen and Charlie. (Source: https://brenebrown.com/media-kit/) About the Book Dare to Lead is the fifth New York Times bestseller from Brene. In the book she digs into what it means to be human and how at work this fact is (too) often avoided. We regularly settle for comfort over courage and avoid the real conversations that make progress possible. She builds on her previous work on empathy vs sympathy, shame vs guilt and vulnerability vs oversharing to bring them into a leadership and workplace context. Brene shares multiple examples of ‘tough crowds’ she’s worked with from those in military uniforms to those in corporate suits and made the concepts real to them in their organisations. Because ultimately we’re all just people, people, people. You don’t have to have to experienced the same exact scenario to be empathetic with someone. Everyone of us has experience so many emotions in our life , whether we are aware of it or not, we’ve all experienced loss, grief, embarrassment, shame or guilt. Through curiosity we can connect with people. Brene also makes a point that empathy is the antidote of shame because when we become empathetic, we remove shame. BIG IDEA 2 (4:51) – Grounded confidence. This is not being ‘big headed’ but knowing what you are capable of, come back to that, reflect and move forward. It is also self compassion; knowing you are enough and taking away the judgement of yourself. When you have the confidence to know how you feel in a certain situation, then you’ll be able to move forward. Knowing and having confidence in your own values also helps you overcome challenging situations. It’s the awareness of these values that helps you decide how to react in certain situations. When teamed with curiosity and empathy, grounded confidence will help you have better conversations with those around you. BIG IDEA 3 (6:12) – Rumbling with vulnerability. This is about ’embracing the suck’ because there’s no courage without vulnerability. Brene’s work shows that vulnerability is not about gratuitous oversharing but about putting yourself out there in such a way the you may be subject to criticism or challenge. Which might suck. Opening yourself that allows you to be brave by showing courage; and courage creates more courage. The Faction Election War Won (3) (Audio) Overturning of the Battleground States Isaac Payne - 11/29/20 (David’s notes in red) In the dream Garrett Crawford and I were sitting on my bed watching television. Garrett's dad was sitting on the floor watching the television with us as well. We were watching the news and a huge story was unfolding that Pennsylvania just overturned in Trump's favor by a margin of like 500+ votes. Also states such as Michigan Georgia were also overturned by very small margins. As I was watching I Knew that the media was lying about the amount of votes that overturned the states. They were trying to do damage control because in actuality it was a landslide in every state in Trump's favor. I believe they were trying to instill anger in the left and prove that our election system isn't broken. As these states were overturned it was night time and a reporter was reporting of the current events and in the center of the crowd Trump stood very confidently and with a smirk on his face. When I saw this on the TV I jumped off the bed and pumped my fist with excitement. I said, "I knew it!" Garrett remained on the bed very calm the entire time just watching as everything unfolded. His dad looked up at me and said, “Does this make you happy?" I said, "Yes, I'm happy about the fulfillment that God showed us" All of a sudden, I transported in my dream to Virginia. There was a black lady standing in front of a crowd in the inner city. The crowd consisted of Antifa, BLM, and democrat citizens. I believe the city was Richmond. The Sword She said, "We will not comply with the overturning of our election and we will count every vote." There were 1.5 million votes cast in this city for Biden which I knew wasn't possible because they didn't have that many registered voters. Suddenly again, I was transported in the inner city.... ( I believe this was Richmond but i know that in my dream it represented cities across the nation) It was night time in the city and BLM and Antifa were burning the city down, overturning cars, and breaking into locally owned businesses and looting. Everything was on fire! Suddenly again I was translated to the front yard of some Courthouse in the country. There was a tall podium and there was a crowd of patriots around the podium watching. The crowd consisted of many different ethnicities and all were conservative. Standing on the podium was a tall slim congressman interrogating Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney was shrunken over and his back was crooked severely as if he was a hunchback. Mitt Romney was on the defense and the Congressman was very charismatic and proving to all the people all his deeds of corruption. The congressman was proving to the patriots watching that Romney was indeed part of the election interference. Romney was very scared trying to weasel his way out of trouble. Again, I was in my room all of a sudden saying to Garrett, "Look at the TV and see how crooked Romney's back is." The evil that is inside him is manifested outwardly. As we were watching, The congressman said to Romney, "You said you were pro-life but you clearly are not." I believe Mitt Romney said something along the line......I dont remember exactly , "I am, I voted for the abortion to be illegal after the 50th week." I didn't really know what that meant as that is past birth..... maybe time reference to an event that will take place? Pestilence I had another dream the same night. I prayed and asked God to show me things that are coming to pass just the day before. In this dream four kids were holding hands jumping up and down and singing a song. The song was Ring around Rosie. There were singing,"Ring around the Rosie, pockets full of Posies, ashes ashes we all fall down." That was the dream. It was very brief and to the point. That song was a song that was sang around the period of the Bubonic Plague aka the Black Death Biden Dies 12/1/20 In this dream I was driving a yellow Volkswagen beetle. I was in the hometown where I was raised in Maceo, KY. I was driving down a straight and narrow road that as I kid I often ran down training for Cross Country. In my passenger seat was a woman trying to seduce me. (The Harlot Church is seeking to seduce Christians) I believe she was older. As I continued driving she was distracting me and at the last intersection before the road ends A car pulled right out in front of me. They were in the wrong as this is not a four way stop. We crashed right into the drivers side of that vehicle. Inside, angry, and hurt was Joe Biden. He got out of the car mad and injured, but I knew that even though he was out of the car walking he was severely injured with blunt force trauma to the head. I felt that he had died. (This is about the third dream I have heard of him dying. The method may not be literal as a car represents our way, our m.o. and he is definitely in the wrong and putting himself forward in this election scheme. I believe he has outlived his usefulness to the DS and they wanted Kamila in anyway.) After waking up from the dream I pondered on what it all meant and I really believe that something may happen to Biden and also the old woman is the Harlot. Thinking more about the dream I thought about the road I was on, and the Lord brought to my attention the name of the road I used to train on. The name is Kelly Cemetery Rd. I used to live at North Chestnut Grove Road and my road intersected with Kelly Cemetery Road and I would often run to my friends house during training. Famine in the Land When they lose the race their revenge will come. Babylon, was a type of our DS. Both were and are the great Eagle. Babylon brought into captivity the people of God as in Lockdowns, shutting down Churches, etc. Babylon conquered them by sword, famine, pestilence, and fire. I said on our website and broadcasts on the foundation of these scriptures below and many dreams and visions 3 years ago that the DS leftists would use Antifa, BLM and the anarchists, to burn cities and Churches and kill people represented by the sword and they have. DS would spray pestilence from planes and they have. The DS also used DEW weapons to burn cities. I said one more thing that has not yet come to pass but will, famine. Jerusalem in these verses was the apostate [backslidden] leadership of Israel, representing the Church.) Jer 32:36 And now therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: Jer 21:7 And afterward, saith Jehovah, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah (Apostate leadership of Churches), and his servants, and the people, even such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy. Jer 21:10 For I have set my face upon this city for evil, and not for good, saith Jehovah: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. Jer 34:2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Go, and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah (Apostate leadership of Churches), and tell him, Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire: 2Ki 25:9 And he burnt the house of Jehovah (Churches), and the king's house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every greathouse, burnt he with fire. (They Burn the big churches) Jer 52:13 And he burned the house of Jehovah, and the king's house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every greathouse, burned he with fire. We need to get ready for the Famine, Sword, Pestilence and Fire Famine, Loss of housing, Fires? Sandy Shaw, 11/26/20 (Don and Merlene transcribed) (David’s notes in red) The way this dream starts there are women and children in our front yard. Then I see some pop-up tents already set up. There’s a line going to my front door. The living room looks different, there are no chairs. There are quite a few blankets from floor to ceiling, boxes that had supplies in them and pop-up tents. Sue G. was working at a table. She was writing down the names of children and their ages and then handing out supplies according to their age. Me, Merlene and Gaynold were in the kitchen making sack lunches. We put either an apple or an orange, and a sandwich and a juice-box in the bag. Then I started to hear some arguing and I went out the side door. There were two ladies arguing behind their kids. I walked up to the ladies and said, very firmly, “Hey, hey, we don’t act like that around here. Both of you need to stop or you will be asked to leave.” I asked the kids, “Could you behave yourself?” No one said anything. I said, “I asked you a question, can you behave yourself?” They answered, “Yes mam.” Then I said, “Good.” We are going to bring out some sack lunches in a few minutes. But if you don’t behave yourself, you will not get a meal and be asked to leave. (The Lord is saying some will not get fed because of their unforgiveness. The Women and their children could well represent the denominational groups.) So I then looked at the women. Is that understood? They said, “Yes Mam.” Christ would not want any of us acting this way. I told the kids, “Jesus would not have acted this way, so we won’t either.” Then I woke up. I asked for Verses by faith at random and got verse 13), Titus 2:11-15 For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world; 13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works. 15 These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise thee. God Brings the Leftist Predators Down Isaac Payne - 12/1/20 In my dream I was walking in the middle of a gravel road between two crop fields. The field on my right was soybean (Good food value for those on the right, the sheep) and the field on my left was corn (Very low food value for the leftists, goats, etc). The road was narrow and as long as the eye could see. The Fields were plentiful and the crops were growing healthy. In front of me about 50 yards were my chickens and they were walking single file on the road. As we continued to walk, we came upon a big Tree on the left side of the road before the crop of corn. (The tree of Babylon Daniel saw) (The tree wasn't in the left side cornfield, it was actually closer to the road, just on the left side of the road... not sure why.) (They want to turn those feeding on the low value corn from the road) The chickens darted single file to the cornfield on the left. I caught up to the chickens, because I didn't want them going into the cornfield. (There is no knowledge of truth where the leftists are) As they were standing on the edge of the corn field, I heard a rustling in the corn but couldnt see what it was. At this point we were all standing between the road and cornfield. Suddenly, out of the left cornfield came a raccoon (A thief with a mask). and tried to snatch one of my chickens. I scared it away and the raccoon retreated in the corn field. Then it popped out again to grab another chicken. However, the other chickens came to the aid of what seemed to be a younger chicken and I again scared the raccoon off. (Gaining knowledge of what is really going on between the left and right we are able to warn one another.) Then once more the raccoon came out amongst the corn and tried to snatch another chicken, but then I grabbed the raccoon and held it down so it could not move. I couldn't pick the raccoon up (Which can be dangerous), I could only restrain it. And so I held the Raccoon down to make it submit. Suddenly, I was transported to another segment of this dream. (not sure if it was a dream within a dream or just another segment) But in this dream I was in the back of a blue car, sedan type style. The sky was a deep Red and scattered dark red clouds. I was watching as I could only see the person's right arm turning the steering wheel wherever he wanted the car to go. The arms were that of a strong man. I knew That it was God driving the car. He had his left arm out of the window holding the raccoon by the scruff, the raccoon was totally submissive and didn't even bother trying to escape or resist. (God will take control of the leftist thieves with his left arm of judgment) The road that the arms "God" were driving me down was sorta curvy at the beginning but then became straight with rolling hills. (A coon is to chickens what a wolf is to sheep. The DS predators will lose. The crooked road where the leftist thieves were trying to take his flock was made straight. The leftist DS will be brought into line. ) Again, we were on a paved road this time between two crop fields. The crop field on the left was barren and parts of it were on fire. (Burning their own cities again?) You could see that the fire already ravaged the left side field and the remaining fire was only remnants scattered across the left side crop field. (As we have said from the beginning their curses will come on themselves.) There wasn't a single standing crop, literally zero fruit was available. (They will not prosper or be fed) I could see in the distance a Tornado was moving on top of one of the rolling hills in the left side of what used to be a crop field. The Tornado was dark and had much debris circulating in it. This Tornado was moving left to right. On the right side of the field it was still very plenteous and bearing much fruit. All seemed well in this field, but I could see the Tornado was ravaging through whatever was left in the field on the left. (The power of God is plundering the income and food of the leftists.) At this point the field was basically mud. I could see the Right arm "God" steering the car toward the Tornado. I wasn't even remotely worried. But, as I was being driven we were at the slope of the last hill where the tornado was on top. At this Slope there was a lake in the left side of the obliterated crop field. I saw the left arm still holding the raccoon by the scruff and the arm just sling with great authority the raccoon into this lake to drown it. At this point both of the arms were steering the wheel as we drove up the hill toward the dark Tornado as it made its way through left and was still traveling toward the direction of the right. (A demonstration of the fear of the Lord and His power to save to those on the right.) Pastor Dana Coverstone Dream of December & January A summary of the dream found here: https://z3news.com/w/pastor-dana-coverstone-december-january-dreams-ships-moving-goods-emergency-shelters-heat-lights-missing-peoples-homes-long-food-lines-flickering-lights-depression-signs-christmas/ No Ships Moving With Goods, Emergency Shelters, Heat & Lights Missing From People’s Homes, Long Food Lines, Flickering Lights, Depression, No Signs of Christmas Saw the calendar page for December & January, finger slowly underline as if pushing it. Pastor Dana Coverstone Saw: – Long food lines, people standing in lines, not in cars, waiting for hours throughout the nation– No ships moving between countries. Saw ships in port on both east & west coasts. No trade moving around the world– Headline “Baltic Dry Index is dead” – No signs of Christmas sales, no Christmas displays, no Christmas lights, no Santa Claus, no Christmas events going on– Great sadness over the land– People seemed very dazed & very confused – Christians that stood out because they had faith & hope in Jesus Christ– Appeared like burning charcoal– Were carrying their torches wherever they went– Did not back down on their faith– Told people, “You need Jesus now. You need Jesus now. You need Jesus now.” – What looked like shopping malls that had been converted to emergency shelters (like the football stadium after hurricane Katrina)– Businesses shuttered in the malls – Shuttered properties– People in coats in their homes with closed curtains looking out– Dirty, dingy & Gray snow on street – not pure white snow – Headline “Nationwide outages plague the Southwest”– Headline “Americans do not know who to blame for darkness” – Lights flickered.– Darkness in all states.– Looked like America was like a lightbulb flickering & about to go out – Fat vultures with rotting food hanging out of their mouths – A figure of depression with a face mask with a smile, choking people & pushing them down on the ground – The St. Louis Arch, people standing under it with very expensive suits– The men had what looked like nuclear suitcases & then an alarm went off.– The men all got into black SUVs & went east & west across the United States.– The men had a Wall Street journal newspaper under their arm & darkly tinted sunglasses. – Headline “Market crashes”– Headline “Sympathy for the swastika” – Tired people – people who had lost the resolve to fight – Group of Christians traveling around & reminding people, “Remember what Jesus said about needing to flee in the winter”. – Lights around the country. Churches were keeping warmth & hope in their communities. – White figure rose up & said, “Brace Yourself. Brace, Brace, Brace Yourself on the Word & my promises & do not rely on your own strength.” Dreams have had different caliber to them. This one left him more shaken. Three things that stuck out to him in this dream were the long food lines, the people in the emergency shelters & the Baltic Dry Index being dead. Get prepared with food, water, gun & ammunition. Laura McDowell If you look back on z3news. After praying and reading my Bible I had a dream that I posted long ago about seeing a shaking at a jiffy lube oil, a shaking at grocery stores then a dam breaking (Which we also have mentioned) and them placing the homeless in empty shopping malls. The first two parts of this dream have come to pass. The oil dropped below 0. The grocery stores had empty shelves. (And will again) Now a dam is going to break. The Holy Spirit also showed me a bomb dropping out of a plane onto a city and power being knocked out in the entire city. Next I was taken to the mountains and the power was on. It’s a select power outage. (Those in the heavenly places in Christ will be spared) The Beast Will Destroy the Wicked Marie Kelton - 11-30-20 During last night prayer meeting I saw a figure standing. I didn't know if it was an angel or the Lord because all I saw was the waist down. The figure had on a white linen robe on. As the meeting continued, Merlene asked to pray in tongues. As we were praying in tongues, I saw the white figure, He was wearing a black satchel, it rested on His right side. While, we were praying I heard a "writer's ink horn," I heard this multiple times. Then I heard "smite the capitals" Amos 9:1 I saw the Lord standing beside the altar: and he said, Smite the capitals, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape. (“Smite the Capitols" is emphasized here to speak of judgment on the apostate leadership and God’s people. Chapter 8 and then 9 begins with this judgment and progresses to “I will raise up the tabernacle of David” and then to “that they may possess the remnant of Edom") So I looked up a writer's ink horn: Eze 9:1-11 Then he cried in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause ye them that have charge over the city to draw near, every man with his destroying weapon in his hand. 2 And behold, six men came (6 is the number of the beast. The DS beast comes to destroy apostates in the capitol city representing the apostate leadership of the Church and the false bride.) from the way of the upper gate, which lieth toward the north, every man with his slaughter weapon in his hand; and one man in the midst of them clothed in linen, with a writer's inkhorn by his side. (To mark the righteous leadership with) And they went in, and stood beside the brazen altar. 3 And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon it was, to the threshold of the house: and he called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writer's inkhorn by his side. 4 And Jehovah said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry over all the abominations that are done in the midst thereof. 5 And to the others he said in my hearing, Go ye through the city after him, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity; 6 slay utterly the old man, the young man and the virgin, and little children and women; but come not near any man upon whom is the mark: and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the old men that were before the house. 7 And he said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and smote in the city. 8 And it came to pass, while they were smiting, and I was left, that I fell upon my face, and cried, and said, Ah Lord Jehovah! wilt thou destroy all the residue of Israel in thy pouring out of thy wrath upon Jerusalem? (Notice that the wicked under them in Israel, a type of the church are included.) 9 Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of wresting of judgment: for they say, Jehovah hath forsaken the land, and Jehovah seeth not. 10 And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will bring their way upon their head. 11 And behold, the man clothed in linen, who had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me. Bride Translates to Help the Suffering Eve Brast - 12/3/20 (David’s notes in red) I dreamt that I (Representing the larger Bride) was driving to David’s house (Representing the David Man-child body). But his house was my second husband Rodney’s house. (Rodney’s house is a play on words. Rev.12:5 And she was delivered of a son, a man child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and unto his throne.) As I was driving, a very tall, muscular man that I knew in the dream was an angel assigned to David, appeared in the passenger seat of my car. He told me that it was time for the Lord’s plans (for His people) to move forward. I was happy thinking, “It’s about time!” And the angel just smiled and let out a partial chuckle and shook his head a little. When I arrived at David’s house, it was located in Texas (Meaning “Friends”) where my mom and dad’s house is currently located on a cul-de-sac. The angel escorted me into the living room but remained by the front door guarding the entrance. There were other people standing over in the kitchen that I knew were from local UBM (The place of Friends). They were just waiting around and casually talking with one another. As I stood in the living taking in the scene, David came into the living room wearing a richly colored plush robe. (Kings wear robes and the righteous are given robes of righteousness which are the righteous acts of the saints.) In the dream, David looked just like Jean-Luc Picard from the “Star Treck the Next Generation” series. (I found this information concerning the name Jean-Luc when I was looking for the meaning of the name. 'Jean-Luc means one beautiful soul. He is dependable, loyal, so entertaining, and the best friend someone could ask for. He is complex, but worth the effort. He is a devoted, unselfish man. He is constantly giving, never thinking of himself. He deserves the world, and so much more. No one could ever not love him.' John means, “God is gracious “. David has often taught about the disciples of Jesus and all those that followed being the last generation. The 42nd generation.) As we were all waiting on the Lord in the living room and kitchen area, suddenly, David’s angel came towards us hurriedly and pointed with urgency towards the opened front door saying, “You need to leave now, because the Lord is sending you on assignment now.” (I understood in the dream that times had become desperate for the masses. Poverty and famine and desperate hunger had come upon the masses.) We followed the angel out the front door and into very bright light. It was so bright that we couldn’t see anything around us. As I went through the front door I was taken up with the angel into a warp tunnel of some sort. (Translation to places) He began explaining everything to me as we traveled. The angel was translating each of us simultaneously around to different assignments that the Lord had for us to do. And this all occurred above the earth. It was like everywhere we went was in a different realm above the physical earth. Like a whole other world that existed in the heavens and parallel to the earth below. (We are from above while dwelling in heavenlies while those who are from beneath dwell upon the earth. John 3:31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all. He went with me and took me to a hospital where I was assigned to a day surgery unit as a surgical technician. (This is what I’ve been trained to do for the last 30 years and it represents all the spiritual life training that we’ve received from the Lord over the years to serve His kingdom and His people in these last days. Jesus was prepared for 30 years before He was anointed to begin His ministry.) (We operate on souls with the sword of the Word) As I worked with my new co workers they were all very impressed with my skills and how quickly and efficiently I worked and for my knowledge and understanding of my trade. I was commended by the surgeons and staff and my supervisor. I was quickly promoted to the larger surgical department across the street that was associated with the day surgery unit and was assigned to the neurosurgical department and was helping to do brain surgery on many patients. (Representing giving people the true gospel which changes their minds and gives them the mind of Christ.) (Rom 12:2 And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.) I wasn’t sure where the angel took David and the others on their assignments, but as he was taking me on to the next assignment that the Lord had for me, he was telling me of all the hunger and unrest and misery of people that was going on in the world. Then I woke up. I asked Father for a few words for this dream and the first one I got, my finger was on, “Glorious things are spoken of you” in Psalms 87:3 (1-6 in context) 1 His foundation is in the holy mountains. 2 Jehovah loveth the gates of Zion More than all the dwellings of Jacob (Israel, the Church). 3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. (The Bride bears the glory of God) Selah 4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon as among them that know me: Behold, Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia: This one was born there. 5 Yea, of Zion it shall be said, This one and that one was born in her; And the Most High himself will establish her. 6 Jehovah will count, when he writeth up the peoples, This one was born there. (We must be born into the Bride, the city of God, by assimilating His Word in us.) I asked Father for another a word and my finger was on ‘it should not fail’ in Esther 9:27. (In context 23-28 23) And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them; 24 because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them; 25 but when the matter came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. 26 Wherefore they called these days Purim, after the name of Pur. Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come unto them, 27 the Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so that it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to the writing thereof, and according to the appointed time thereof, every year; 28 and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the remembrance of them perish from their seed. (Will these things occur during Purim 2021? (I dont know what will happen on the day but the parable of purim is being fulfilled and Haman and his murderous people are going down.) I asked for a third word and my finger was on ’there shall be a fulfillment’ in Luke 1:45 (41-45 in context) 41 And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; 42 and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? 44 For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And blessed is'she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. (Believe the true gospel and you will manifest the fruit of Jesus like Mary did.) Rev. 12:1-12, 1 And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman arrayed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 and she was with child; and she crieth out, travailing in birth, and in pain to be delivered. 3 And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his heads seven diadems. 4 And his tail draweth the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon standeth before the woman that is about to be delivered, that when she is delivered he may devour her child. 5 And she was delivered of a son, a man child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and unto his throne. 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that there they may nourish her a thousand two hundred and threescore days. 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels going forth to war with the dragon; and the dragon warred and his angels; 8 And they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him. 10 And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying, Now is come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accuseth them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony; and they loved not their life even unto death. 12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe for the earth and for the sea: because the devil is gone down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he hath but a short time.

People under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) program will get larger annuities and full cost of living adjustments (COLAs) to keep pace with inflation. But the majority who will this year and in the future are under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). They will have to live with smaller monthly annuities, diet COLAs, and depend on their Social Security and TSP investments for their retirement income. Long range planning isn’t just important, it is absolutely essential. Federal benefits expert Tammy Flanagan thinks this upcoming December-January may produce the tidal wave of retirements experts have incorrectly predicted for decades. But maybe this time it will happen. But whether you are going out this year, next summer or departure day is years away, plan ahead. Starting yesterday. But beginning now is better than nothing. A lot better. Tammy will be my guest today on our Your Turn. She is going to cover the waterfront and focus on the 7 things you should NOT do when mapping out your retirement. Her list is a long one, but trust me your retirement will seem a lot longer and leaner if you skip it.

There are dozens of advantages, but we're sharing five that really speak to us and will, hopefully, encourage others to see the benefits of working while traveling abroad. Our podcastation this week is in our new Edinburgh apartment situated on the Royal Mile (Canongate, for those familiar with Old Town Edinburgh). Our pandemic update is a step in the wrong direction, but one the government hopes will slow down the rapidly rising cases in Scotland's central belt, and we also talk about our what's-next plans -- Karen is fine with staying in Edinburgh and Jon wouldn't mind something a little warmer and lighter (Edinburgh only has 7 hours of sunlight during December-January). As for the list, here are the top 5 advantages of a work-from-anywhere travel lifestyle:No post-vacation letdown (it's real thing!)Always something to look forward toLess stuff to own and maintain (and need!)Gain a global perspective on cultures, politics, economies and the environmentNo more static office Follow us on Instagram: @SumplaceNewFollow us on Facebook: @SumplaceNewCredits:Intro/Outro Music: The World at Large by Daniel O'ConnorIntro VO: Laura Welsh

Check out the YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9SMwL3ZgCUsD-yIDU_Zsqg/ Call 1: Hi Meghan and Melisa, I am twenty-three. I am a Cancer, gross, I know. My boyfriend is a Sagittarius, we're in a pretty new relationship. We've only been together for four months. So everything's been pretty good so far, but there is one issue that I have. Um, so I'll give you some background. He works really long shifts like eleven, twelve hours. So usually when we hang out it's him getting off of work at 11, midnight, him coming over we watch a movie or something and go to sleep which I understand because of his work schedule. Um, he does get two days off during the week. And so my issue is that in the four months we've been dating, we've probably hung out during the day like when the sun is out like maybe four times. We've probably got on like to quote unquote dates and it didn't really bother me at first but I kind of been thinking about it and on his days off I try to make plans with him, but he's usually got something else going on and it usually involves hanging out with another girl. He has a lot of friends that are girls and that's something that I knew from the beginning and it didn't really bother me because I trust him, but like for example the other night he went and smoked with this girl and they kinda just got outside and like watched the sunset for like four hours and it kind of just honestly made me like jealous that he's making those plans, type of plans with other girl, but when I try to make plans like that with him, he's always busy and it's like every time he has a day off he's doing something like that, another example he went and got like coffee and sat in a park with a girl for like an entire afternoon, and I brought it up to him, and he always says that he's going to make more effort to hang out with me during the day, but he never really does and I don't know how else to bring it up to him or what else to say, or if I'm just being crazy. So any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. I love you guys. Bye. Call 2: Hi Meghan, Melisa, and anybody else who is listening, I am calling hoping to get an honest opinion on whether I am being unreasonable with my boyfriend. We're both 27 we've been together for five years, and we've been long distance for 4 and 1/2 of those years because his job requires him to be out of state, he needs experience that he can only get in certain places and I can't follow him or move with him, I have a steady job where we live and family to take care of here so me moving around with him has not been an option so we've just made it work long-distance. Lately because of the coronavirus, things have been kind of up in the air and he promised me in the beginning of this past year so the beginning of 2020 that he would for sure be home permanently by December / January of 2021 but then the virus happened and he didn't get the experience that he needed, couldn't get the experience that he needed, so now he's considering going back from January to May of 2021. I don't know if I'm being unreasonable by asking him not to do that I know that he made the promise not knowing obviously what would happen with coronavirus but I feel like I've put in my time you know being supportive of him, needing this experience and there's also no guarantee with the virus that he'll be able to get it then anyway so I just don't know if I'm being unreasonable he is very confident that he's going to get the experience and the money that he needs to start our life together, we talk about that all the time, we talk about how much fun we would have being married and raising kids and we agree on all of those fundamentals we want the same things but my timeline just looks a little bit different than his and I'm naturally an impatient person to begin with so ultimately I just want to hear somebody else's thoughts and feelings it has been a long road and I would hate to give up on a good guy but I also would hate to be waiting around forever so thank you so much in advance for any help that you can give I hope I gave enough detail but also a bonus points Meghan if you can guess my astrological sign and I promise I will call back and tell you if you were right and give you an update if I can get advice thank you so much! Call 3: Hi Meghan and Melisa. I'm twenty years old going into my sophomore year of college and I'm a Leo. I'm in a bit of a pickle right now because one of my best friends from high school, we we reconnected over this past summer is she has dated this past guy who I'm actually still friends with but I've been kind of juggling these two friendships at the same time not to mention they dated about two years ago for about almost a year and broke up about a year ago. So it's been kind of a really messed up situation because basically I have become interested in this guy. He showed an interest in me and I had kind of tried to make sure that I didn't have any feelings for him because I didn't want to mess with my friendship with this girl, but he showed an interest and now we've opened up these weird feelings for each other and he asked me whether or not I'd be interested in like a friend with benefits kind of situation and not knowing really what to do at all. I decided to reach out to my friend and ask her because I'm a really honest person. I'm a really honest communicator. She's a Taurus by the way. He is a Pisces if that matters at all and basically I just wanted to have open communication with her and talk through it because I didn't want to hurt our friendship. And so I laid it all out on the line and she gave me the green light to go but and then she started to kind of flip that story and get a little bit angry at me later with other friends kind of reaching out getting a little bit angry and where it stands now is essentially I have realized I have had feelings for this guy and he has feelings for me, but I still don't want to mess up my friendship with this girl. So, my consciousness is telling me not to go for it, but my feelings are involved and so it's making it really hard to kind of decide what to do here. If I should definitely not date him cuz I don't want to mess with my friendship with her or if it's really too far at this point, and I've already messed with my friendship with her if I should just explore this because I do have feelings. So any help would be really appreciated. Please. I need to get out of this pickle. Thank you. Call 4: Hello, Meghan, Melisa and potential guest. I'm needing some advice on how to handle a situation with my fiance. We've been together for three years and just the other - well, I guess it's been about three weeks now, he's been having symptoms of what I thought was a UTI but um, I guess it's not, he went to get tested for an STD and for UTI or whatever his results have come back that he doesn't have a UTI so his other results haven't come back yet, but he's pretty certain that it's going to be an STD. I have not been with anybody else in three years, he swears he hasn't either and I definitely believe it by the way he is acting towards me being accusatory that I've done something telling me that I'm going to take a polygraph test if it comes back positive for an STD and I've done a lot of research and I have seen where if you have had an STD before it could be lying dormant in your body and come back. I did have chlamydia before, my ex boyfriend gave it to me about four years ago and we went to get treatment but we never went to get back - we never went back to get retested. So is this a possibility that it could have came back and I could have now infected him? I had an ectopic pregnancy about two years ago. And I have through my research discovered that if you have pelvic inflammatory disease or you do have an STD that that could happen. So I'm obviously going to get tested as well go to the doctor and everything, but as far as reassuring my fiance that I haven't done anything and you know getting through this difficult time, what advice do you have for me? Because I don't want it to take a toll on our relationship. I don't want there to be any trust issues even though there is now. I just don't know what to do and then taking a polygraph test is crazy and I have anxiety. So I do worry about failing that even though I'm not guilty. I haven't done anything wrong. So I don't know. I just the only thing I can figure is that he I gave it to him. But because he did get tested two months after we were together though, and he was negative for STDs. So how could he get the negative after we slept together and then gotten it three years later and be positive. I just don't know. So any advice would be appreciated. Thank you so much. Don’t Blame Them: Hi, I'm calling for Don't Blame Them and this is in regards to the girl who, she currently works in the political office and she is interested in social media. However, she is considering a career in nursing and I just thought I can relate to this because I mean unlike her I don't have my bachelor's in political science or something in that range, but I did study political science for a year and I'm very interested in it. But I just realized my true passion was nursing and while nursing is a more stable job, everyone just assumes that nursing is just working at the bedside and working in a hospital all day every day, but that's not true, if she's looking for really great benefits and where I think that she can use her other degree in is public health. So public health nurses basically would go out into the community. And especially with her human and family development degree that she got I think that will really benefit and most of the public health departments. They work Monday to Friday nine-to-five and they have state benefits because it's actually a state job so that would get great insurance. So I don't encourage her that, you know, although it's not her passion. She can definitely find a way to make it passionate for her. She can also get into policy-making which if you study as a BSN, you will take a policy development class and kind of learn the steps to see if you're interested in that as well. And you know, that's just my life to go for it. If you want to go for go for it. If you don't it's totally fine. Just do what makes you happy, but just know that if you are going to be a nurse, you don't have to be stuck in the hospital all day. All right that's it, bye! We are back with another Tiny Dots, this time featuring my two best pals, Eason and Mikey. Please note this was recorded in December/January, pre COVID, so any plans mentioned either happened before COVID, or was cancelled due to it. I just don't want anyone thinking we here at Tiny Dots don't take this stuff seriously, wear a mask. Eason and Mikey are more than just my best friends, they are also accomplished hearthstone players, behind the scene wizards when it comes to theatrical performances, and just good people in general. Listen to us discuss the topic of: Games.
This week we will begin by briefly touching on an article detailing how, and I quote, “Subprime Canadian borrowers are weathering the crisis just fine.” How Joe Bidens tax plan could affect US markets. In our Your Stock, Our Take segment we take a look at three interesting companies. The first, Gatekeeper Systems Inc. (GSI:TSX-V), a provider of intelligent video solutions for public transport and smart cities. We have two “Stars” for listeners this week. The first, should be no stranger to KeyStone clients being the first Cannabis related stock we ever recommended just in December/January of the past year. The company, Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (TRUL:CNX), is a vertically integrated "seed-to-sale" company and is the first and largest fully licensed medical cannabis company in the State of Florida. Trulieve’s shares have surged 30% in the past week. Our Second star is, NexTech AR Solutions Corp. (NTAR:CSE), which develops and operates augmented reality solutions. The stock is up 70% in the past week. We let you know if it continues to be an opportunity or a potentially dangerous investment at present.
Crista Pisano was born and raised in northern New Jersey and began painting in oils in 1989 under the instruction of John Phillip Osborne at the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, NJ. Her career as a painter almost didn’t happen because as a young child she had her heart set on being a ballet dancer. At twelve years of age she nixed that idea and decided it wasn’t for her. Crista's mother suggested that she take a look at Bob Ross, you know, the painter on TV. Finding joy in painting, she pursued an education in fine art. Crista graduated from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in 2000, receiving a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts Painting, and in 2003, received a Masters Degree of Fine Arts Painting from the New York Academy Graduate School of Figurative Art. With that solid foundation under her belt, she now paints full time. Aside from participating in various plein air events throughout the year, she exhibits throughout New England and New York. She has received numerous awards and honors, including “Best in Show” at the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in both 2012 and 2014. Crista also won “Honorable Mention” at Plein Air Easton in 2015 and 2016. Plein Air Magazine had included Crista as one of their featured artists in their December/January 2016 issue. Crista paints landscapes – mostly plein air and also in her studio in Nyack, NY. Though she is known for painting on a small scale, she also paints larger works in her studio. In this delightful conversation, Crista shows that her adventures in painting in plein air goes beyond the brush. When she paints, the unexpected may also follows – whether it’s rescuing a baby in a runaway baby carriage or learning about owls from a scary looking biker. Crista takes it all in stride, adding these fantastical stories to her collection of experiences that could only be had from painting outdoors. If you were to chance upon her in the field painting, you would see Crista Pisano passionately capturing nature’s grandeur. Now you’re a Universal being with minimal earth attachments. So both negative and positive earth memories are fading. You’ve created a Universal superwoman/man entity because your personal earth structure crumbled just as is true for all earth structures. The difference is you’ve rebuilt yourself the past few days. Other structures will do so soon. You Have No Competitors is the title of last week’s Brenda’s Blog – her weekly channeled blog for LifeTapestryCreations.com. The overview of Brenda's January 31, Creation Energies channel: You've walked out of your prison cell. The majority of earth beings have done the same or are about to. So it is that the prison wardens - your current leaders - are using every fear trick possible to ensure you return to their directives - your prison cell. Despite the best attempts of those now in power to frighten you into capitulating to their outer-directed power desires, the worlds' majority is taking over. Welcome to our guest, Brianna Bernard, a Minneapolis-based Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach. We’re going to share 6 tips for a healthier holiday season. If you’re anything like us, we’re coming off of Halloween, and maybe realizing that our sweet tooth ruled our nutrition world (maybe more than we wanted it to). I love chocolate; self proclaimed chocoholic. I know many of us are looking forward to Thanksgiving and enjoying the family’s secret recipes and buffets; we wrap up in winter quite literally. We know January will come and we will make that New Year’s resolution to get fitter because it’s the right time. If you’re nodding your head because this describes you, but you also know that the New Year comes. In good intention, you set the goal, but by March you’ve forgotten about the goal and feel like swim suit season is around the corner and doesn’t excite you much, then we welcome you to try on some alternative ideas to move away from this cycle. We’re going to talk about trying on something different if this cycle doesn’t excite you. We’ll share 6 tips. First, let’s get to know our guest, Brianna Bernard, a little more. Meredith: What got you interested in fitness and healthy lifestyles? Brianna: First, thank you for having me on the podcast. What got me into fitness was gaining weight myself. Back in 2012, I became a mom to a sweet little boy named Ty. During my pregnancy, I gained 70 pounds. When he was born, I was 245 pounds. A year after he was born, I was still 240 pounds. It was a constant struggle. I tried different diets. I tried going to the gym. I tried doing DVDs in my living room like kettlebells and P90X. Nothing would stick for longer than a couple of weeks. I realized that I needed support and accountability, and I wasn’t going to be able to do it on my own. I hired a Personal Trainer. I started training 2-3 times/week. I started logging my food and overhauled my diet. I focused on drinking water and eating lean protein and vegetables. Within a month, I lost 12 pounds. In 3 months, I had lost 30 pounds. By the time I hit the 6 month mark, I was down 50 pounds. I thought, “this is going to work!” I was really consistent. By the one year mark, I was down 107 pounds. It changed my life in every way. While it changed me physically, the transformation that happened on the inside was far more profound. It inspired me to become a personal trainer and nutrition coach to help other people become healthier, stronger versions of themselves. Meredith: Congratulations! I knew you were a lifestyle transformer, but hearing the story makes it real. You share practical strategies and how other can do it to. It’s not just stage or a TV. As we dive into that, let’s go into a few tips that people can think about right now to avoid the holiday slope mindset. Starting with mindset, if we think about waiting until New Years or starting something now, what would you say? Brianna: So many people wait until Monday, or the first of the month, or the first of the year to start something new. We have this all-or-nothing mindset that if I can’t go 100% in on my nutrition or exercise, then I might as well not do it at all. This is a huge mistake we fall into. Instead of making little changes each week and implementing small healthy habits (even if we aren’t 100% consistent) we can do so much better over the holidays. Maybe we need to simply level set our expectations. Maybe the goal isn’t to lose weight over the holidays, but simply not to gain. Figuring out how you can still enjoy the holidays, but make healthy choices most of the time is a better choice going into the holiday season. Meredith: I like the idea of level set expectations because it helps us say “this is what I actually expect of myself,” and make the declaration on what we are trying to accomplish going into the holidays. I notice that you mention logging your food in My Fitness Pal. Why do you do that, or feel that it can help people at home? Brianna: I started logging my food at the beginning of my weight loss transformation. There wasn’t one thing that changed everything, but it helped keep me accountable to what I was putting in my body and how much I was eating. Many times we aren’t making unhealthy choices, but our portions can be out of control. Logging my food held me accountable to not over-indulging at a party, event, or eating dinner with my family. Meredith: Sometimes, I talk to people that are overwhelmed when they first look at My Fitness Pal. They know what they are eating, but they don’t know how much to put in for quantity. What’s a portion or serving? How do you describe that to your clients? Brianna: It is helpful to use the size of your hand as a measuring tool. A serving of protein is the size and thickness of your palm. For me that is 4 oz, which is what I need to consume in a meal. A serving of vegetables is about the size of a fist. A serving of carbohydrates (fruit, greens, beans) is about one cupped handful. A serving of healthy fats looks like the tip of your thumb. Using these tricks to estimate how much you are eating can make a huge difference. If I sit down to eat rice, I’m probably going to eat much more than a cupped handful, but if I know what a serving looks like then I’m not going to put 2-3 cups of rice on my plate. This is a great tool when you are eating out, or somewhere where you aren’t able to measure your portions. Meredith: So a pint of ice cream is probably not a serving? Speaking of that, people go to holiday events. If people are afraid they are going to eat the whole buffet because they know they do this every time, what advice would you share? Brianna: There are so many pieces of helpful advice that I give clients to do better over the holidays. I’m a believer that you should not completely deprive yourself of everything you love over the holidays. It’s OK to enjoy the things you love, but it doesn’t mean you have to eat them in copious amounts, or eat everything. Instead of eating one of every cookie, pick one that you really, really love and enjoy it and be done. One of the things I do is eat before I go to holiday parties. Not necessarily a full meal. Depending on where I’m going and who I’m going with, I know there aren’t going to be healthy options. I eat a healthy snack or small meal before I go, because if I go into that party starving, I’m going to over-indulge in things that are not great for me. Things like a protein shake or bar, handful of raw nuts, hardboiled egg, or vegetables are great small snacks you can eat on the way there so you don’t get to the party and feel famished. Meredith: Thank you for some practical tips here. Many times, these gatherings or parties occur after work or later in the day, so when clients wonder if they should skip breakfast and lunch to save up all their calories for the end of the day, how do you advise them? Brianna: I’m sure we’ve all heard this a thousand times, or we have the friend that says, “I made so much food; don’t eat before you come. I have to get rid of all of this.” One of the biggest mistakes people make going into the holidays is reserving all of those calories by not eating the whole day. You are setting yourself up for failure by going into the party starving. You will eat thousands of calories of unhealthy things, as opposed to eating healthy things during the day and then a few hundred less healthy ones at the end of the day. It’s always a good idea to eat before you go, and eat normally the way you would throughout a day before a party or event. Meredith: On the opposite side of that, I often hear that people go to events and tried way more things than they had planned. Maybe they ate 3000 calories of high sugar or high fat foods that weren’t the most ideal protein and vegetable choices. Then they want to go burn it off on the treadmill, or maybe stay on the sweet tooth trend. How do you help people navigate out of the situation of having a lot of treats and feeling bad about themselves the next day? Brianna: It’s so easy to get into that all-or-nothing mindset. I’m no different. The one thing that really clicked for me on my weight loss journey was that it is OK to have an unhealthy meal or snack and get back on track the next time I ate. I didn’t have to wait until Monday or the first of the month. I didn’t have to wait until after the holidays. I was the boss. I got to choose what I was going to eat next. It was super powerful to say “no, I’m not going to eat terrible the rest of the week just because I had one night of indulgence. I’m going to start fresh first thing in the morning. I’m not going to starve myself. I’m not going to feel bad about it. I’m just going to eat clean the next time I have a meal or snack.” That’s something that holds true for me even today. It’s OK to have some Halloween candy, then wake up and have a healthy breakfast again. Meredith: When you say, “eat clean,” I know that means different things to different people. How would you describe that? Brianna: Eating clean to me has always been about eating whole unprocessed foods. When I talk about eating clean, for me, that is eating lean protein, fruit, vegetables, healthy fats, and very minimal processed food. That has given me the most results and made me feel so much healthier. Not only do I look healthy, but all of my tests and everything is so perfect. My sleep is great. I can manage stress better. I’m a more patient parent. Everything falls into line when I’m eating clean whole foods. Meredith: Yes; I think of that as “would I put diesel fuel into my car, which is not designed for it?” Our car runs better, certainly, on different kinds of fuel. The body does too. We can see how your tips here on clean eating can really carver to the goal of just wanting to feel better too. Brianna: So true. Meredith: Would you ever advise clients to bring their own treats or ask the host about what they are preparing? This always gets tricky with family when maybe you have a focus on health, but the rest of the family doesn’t. Brianna: That is so true. I’ve certainly been in situations with family, co-workers, friends, where I’m trying to eat healthy and people say “come on! One cookie isn’t going to hurt you. One glass of wine isn’t going to kill you.” They are very threatened by the fact that I’m eating healthy because at the end of the day, they want to be making healthier choices also. Maybe they don’t have the motivation, or accountability, or a missing piece that they need to be successful right now in that area. People don’t want to suffer alone. If someone isn’t happy with oneself, it is easy for them to try to pull you down too. It is best not to rely on someone else to accommodate your dietary needs. I often bring my own healthy appetizer or side to parties so I know there will be at least one thing there that I know I will enjoy that is good for me. I also make it a goal to fill up my plate with vegetables first; then I will fill in the gaps with protein. Then, if I feel like I want some starches, I will fill in with those. Bringing a veggie tray with with hummus or a side that you can eat that you know will be good for you is huge. Meredith: Thank you for sharing that tip. So many of us go to events where we want to please the host by eating everything they have prepared, but we also realize that nothing there aligns with our goals either. Bringing a share gives us the best of both worlds. Brianna: Absolutely. We teach people how to treat us. If you walk into the party and say “thank you very much for making all of these things; I’m going to eat this.” If we’re very matter-of-fact about it, I’ve found that people learn that is just what you do. It’s not open for discussion or conversation. It’s just what you’re doing. When you feel pressure to eat certain things, it’s OK to take a stand and be matter-of-fact; “nope; this is what I’m eating; thank you though.” Usually that closes the conversation. Meredith: I appreciate your sharing that tip too. So many people feel awkward in those situations, and that is a very matter-of-fact way to say “this is what I do.” It’s kind of like if you play soccer, and your friend participates in dance, you might not want to go dance because you do soccer, not dance. Usually the friend is OK with that. Brianna: Right. It’s so silly that we let peer pressure, even as adults, guide us. It’s OK to set boundaries with people in our lives. We want them to make better choices, and we can lead by example too. Thank you very much to Brianna for sharing all of these tips with us today. An overview of my experience in the December/January 2019 fires on the South Coast of NSW.
Because I talk a lot about reflection and intention regularly throughout the year, when December/January come around and everyone else talks about it too, I find myself leaning forward to hear what they have to say. So here on the last day of the month, the last day of the year and the final day of the decade, I’m asking myself as I share these words with you: do I have anything to add? I've decided that I do. It’s a simple observation that I hope will encourage you to walk at your own pace in freedom. If you want a little no-shame companionship as you stand between the year you’ve just lived and the one you’re entering into, listen in. Discussing articles in the December/January edition of the Presbyterian Herald, editor Sarah Harding is joined by Council for Global Mission Secretary, Rev Uel Marrs and PCI's Discipleship Officer, Rick Hill.
Just a quick casual conversation with Rick. We talk a little about where everything's at, and where we're heading. Called it the End Of An Era podcast because college friends are starting to move away, a friend and the person who got me the gear to record this show recently passed away, and I'm taking a break for a couple months to recoup. I put this as episode 49, but really it was recorded as the last show of the series. I just put out episode 50 with Erica Hernandez for new listeners who give it a chance in the upcoming two months, so if they listen to the most recent episode they'll get a good idea of what the show is about. I hope to come back early February with better episodes and on a more consistent basis. I'm going to spend December & January improving the quality of the show and I look forward to putting out more episodes. Lots of love & take care everyone.

Some of them are already trending, some are on the tip of taking off and some we know very well, we just need to get better at! But before I get into all that, let’s do the discovery of the week. THIS WEEK’S DISCOVERY! This discovery is Google Easy PDF. What does Google Easy PDF do? It makes PDF documents writable – which means people can fill in forms or write answers etc on your PDF. I think it’s a frustration of many that we download these workbooks, lead magnets, books etc as PDFs and we need to print them just so we can write on them or fill out the answers. The second part to the frustration many of us feel, is that once we write the answers, we need to scan them back into our computer and send them back to the person via email. It’s an arduous job! Labour intensive and not a good use of our time. And in the spirit of this podcast – google easy PDF will make your life simpler! Now I have PDFs out there in the world and haven’t used Google Easy PDF. So, it’s one of my jobs, over my December January to get things like this done. How about you? Do you need to go back over some items in your business and make it easier for your client or customer? Give me a better experience? As always, just a little disclaimer, my discoveries are just that and I am in no way affiliated with any of them but promise to tell you if I ever am. I just love them and from the response of my listeners, you guys, you are loving them too! Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you’d like to share, please do so. Email me at jenn@jenndonovan.com.au or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple. I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! 2020 MARKETING PREDICTIONS – 6 essential marketing trends for 2020 My predictions for where we need to be spending time in our marketing in 2020. I’ve come up with these 6 predictions by watching trends, doing marketing myself and for my clients and watching what works, what doesn’t and what did and doesn’t anymore or vice versa. So, let’s get into it. Google my Business If you haven’t already set up your “google my business” page – then do so TODAY peeps! And start treating it like social media – post to it – put your best content on it. Why? Well what I’ve seen and experienced is that since the demise of Google + which shut down in about May 2019, Google has put a whole load of focus on Google My Business as it’s answer to a social media platform. It’s like an online directory for local business. Want to be found locally, then this is the place you need to be putting your time and energy into in 2020. Some of the most compelling reasons why you need a Google My Business presence It's Free. ... Helps Customers Find Your Physical Location. ... Better Search Visibility. ... Displays Useful Information. ... Another Communication Channel. ... Encourage and Actively Respond to Reviews I recently had a new prospect reach out to me and said “I just had to ring, every time I google X you keep coming up. I can no longer escape you, so I’ve picked up the phone and called!” So, priority number Uno (although I’m probably going to say that about all 6 points) is Google my Business. How do you start, just google, google my business! If you already have a Gmail account, you are halfway there! Voice Search This has already taken off, but I can absolutely guarantee you, these devices will be hot on the Christmas list for households without one this year! What am I talking about? Voice search devices, Google Home, Amazon Echo with Alexa and the one many of us have in our pockets Siri by Apple! We have one, every morning my children ask, Hey Google, what’s the weather going to be like today” or “Hey Google, can you set a timer for 5 minutes please” We are only going to see the rise and rise of voice search marketing. What does this mean for small businesses? Well frankly a lot and probably worth a whole podcast in itself. But voice searches like “Hey Google, what’s the best pizza in town X” are going to become more and more common. So, and this is going to be harsh, if you don’t have a website already, if your website does not have great content on it that is in the language of your customer that solves their problems, then you are behind the eight ball coming into 2020. If you don’t already have a website – get one. Building your brand, your business, just on social platforms that you don’t own the real estate of, not a good idea. All you might need is a fabulous one page website, with great content on it that is in the language of your customer that solves their problems. Voice search is not going away and if you’re honest and look at your own or your family’s habits, you’ll see that you or they are even starting to trend that way. Conversational Marketing I have been banging on about this for about 3 years now. So, it’s no surprise that it’s made it into my 2020 predictions. I will say it again, loud and proud, human to human, H2H, we need to be marketing to our prospects like they are human. Marketing is no longer about telling someone how good you are, how long you’ve been that good for and how they need you. It’s about having a conversation with them, telling some stories, letting them get to know you – yes YOU! And leading them down a funnel path that results in them not being able to resist you and/or your services because they know you and you alone, can solve their problems or delight them. If you wouldn’t say it to another human, in those exact words, then don’t write it as a content piece in your marketing. Get personal too. Do personal marketing. Maybe it’s a piece of direct marketing – direct marketing is where the marketing is 100% personalised to that person. A birthday card, a book sent to them you know they’d like, an personal invitation to attend an event that’s personal, a video sent when they join your world, a DM on Instagram saying, thanks for the follow, have a great day, a direct message on LinkedIn, saying, thanks for connecting or would you like to connect. Maybe send Christmas cards or Happy 2020 cards …. Personal marketing. One of our best pieces of marketing in my retail days, was something we sent in a bright pink envelope with a handwritten note. I have no doubt we had a 100% open rate, who gets snail mail or pink snail mail these days, but we also had a 95% take up rate of the offer because it was SO personal. The businesses who get this, will win more in 2020. Oh, and, yes, you really do have to keep showing your face and your team’s faces if you have one. If you’re afraid of the camera, I’ll say one thing, actually two, 1. Filters and 2. It’s not about you, it’s about your customers and how you can serve them. So, my prediction is basically, those who marketing conversationally, will win more business because humans interact with other humans. Video Sorry not sorry! Video is king and it has been for many years. Video intensives your ability to build authority as the go-to person in your industry and it also quickens the “know, like, love, trust” factors that people need to feel before they’ll do business with you or become a loyal customer or client and one of your best piece of marketing – the referrer! I’ve spoken about video many times on this podcast before. And I pretty sure I’ve shared this story, but I’ll do it again. About 18 months ago, I was at my mastermind complaining to my business bestie that I hate video. I hate myself on video, I hate the way I look, the way I sound, blah blah blah. His advice, swift and to the point (and a dagger to the heart), Jenn you look and sound the same to me on video as you do standing here complaining right now. It’s only you who thinks you look different or sound different. #truthbomb – boy did that one hurt. But it’s so so true and one of the best/worst pieces of advice I’ve ever had. So, if you are interacting with people face to face, whether it be 1 or 200, the way they see you, the way they hear you is the same if you put yourself on a video. I’ll pause for affect – let that sink in. I hope that little pep talk will get you doing more video from today onwards – don’t wait for 2020! Set yourself a goal – do a video every day from today for 30 days. Post them. If practice makes perfect, then you’ll smash out videos like bunnies soon enough. Insights Driven Marketing Businesses owns who use their analytics and insights to drive their marketing will win bigger and better and quicker in 2020. If you have google analytics, or you are on a social media platform you have access to insights and data that can really help you up level your marketing and build strategies you know will work. Therefore, making marketing easier, simpler, more strategic and, what we all want, have a better return on investment. If you look at your insights and see that you audience is more engaged on Friday nights, then heck post great content on Friday nights. If you can see from your Google Analytics that you have a big bounce rate on a particular page of your website, invest why that is? Is it load speed, is it not what they are expecting? If you see from your email marketing analytics that you have a bigger open rate when you use emojis in the subject line or when you send something out on a Sunday, then what are you doing sending an email out on Tuesday? Use all the tools at your exposure to marketing strategically. Those who do in 2020, those people will be the ones you are admiring their growth in business and wondering how they did it. Influencer Marketing Having someone else tell your audience just how amazing you are, or how amazing your product is, is worth it’s weight in gold if done right. Having someone else help build that know, like, (or love) and trust factors is almost priceless. In 2020, stop thinking about influencer marketing as paying a celeb to show your product, think of it as your customer who tagged you on Instagram when they took a photo of your product, think of it as the amazing staff member you have who always shares your stuff on their socials or to their friends, or that customer who is always referring you new business. 92 percent of people trust other consumer recommendations over business advertising. Paying for Influencers is a trend that will grow in 2020. However, they won’t be looking for celebs necessarily, they will be looking for people with seriously engaged, perhaps smallish, audience. But, we as small business owners, need to look at influencer marketing even more micro and look at who we have in our world doing it already or how we can encourage it – like how can you encourage your customers to tag and share what do you or what you sell more on their social platforms? Definitely a strategy to give weight to in 2020. So that’s it – 6 of my predictions for 2020 and what marketing will look like. Let’s recap Google my business page Voice activated marketing Conversational, human to human marketing Video Insights driven marketing Influencer marketing Got questions, comments, thoughts, ideas – well I’d love to hear them all. In this episode, Alex answers some questions her listeners had about the game itself and about the Crunch’s restricted free agent defensemen. She then continues her look back at the 2018-19 season for Syracuse, following up last week’s discussion of October/November with December/January. Alex picks out the Crunch’s continued identity struggles and surprise scoring problems as lows (among others). Before things got too depressing, she then reminds her listeners about a certain game in December against a fierce rival, the return of an old friend, and the beginning reign of one Eddie Pasquale.
Ken Lewis runs Apmex, one of the largest bullion dealers in the nation. Recently he's seen sales pick up and interest in the sector return. Production, along with demand, has been down, but that may be changing. While we saw the expected seasonal bump in December/January, it appears to have continued into February, with gold outpacing the stock market and holding steady over the psychologically important $1300 per oz. mark. This could be the start of another major move up in precious metals prices. Let's see what happens next. And Ken is giving out Sprott's Special Gold Report. Just click here...

This is one of my favorite podcasts that I have recorded. I hope you listen and are encouraged! The new year is always full of promise, resolutions, and plans. We have high hopes on THIS being the year that we will get it right. And very slowly as the months go by, we tend to fall back into old patterns and habits. And we begin the very same cycle next December/January to resolve again, to make THIS year the year we get it together. As Christians, we know that we will never have it fully together this side of heaven. We are on a journey, and while the plans and resolutions we make can be helpful, many times the focus is on US and what WE can do for a better year. Resolve this year to focus on Jesus. What can HE do through you in the new year? Better yet, what does HE want to do? Many times the plans look very different from yours, but they are always best.https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1kM
When the New Year rolls around, people start making resolutions to change their lives. More often than not these ventures end in failure, but it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s not a lack of willpower, motivation or hard work. It’s just the way we make resolutions isn’t always consistent with the science of behavior change. Jen, Annie and Lauren explore the three ways you can make better resolutions this year, or even decide whether you need to make resolutions at all. Resolve to join us and learn more! Transcript Annie: The New Year is upon us and with that comes optimistic feelings of a fresh start, a clean slate and a chance to reach our goals. Love them or hate them, it’s estimated that almost half of Americans make resolutions every year. Step into any gym the 1st week of January and it’s clear that fitness and weight loss goals are topics for most resolution makers. Resolutions are a dime a dozen. It’s sticking to them that can be difficult. Sadly, the reality is that most of us who vow to make changes in 2019 will drop them before January is even over. On this episode of Balance365 Life Radio Jen, Lauren and I dive into common reasons why New Year’s resolutions fall flat and changes you can make to help ensure you stick with your goals long after the New Year’s excitement fades. Enjoy! Lauren and Jen, welcome back! We are discussing New Year’s resolutions already, can you believe it? Lauren: No. Jen: I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone. Annie: No, I feel like I blinked and it was like the end of the year. Jen: I feel like I just saw you guys in San Francisco in February. Annie: I know, it was like a year ago. Jen: I know. Annie: That’s what happens when you see each other every day and talk to each other every day, all day. Besties. So we are talking about New Year’s resolutions because, I mean, it’s obviously a timely subject, we’re coming up on the end of the year and people are thinking about what they want to accomplish in the New Year, right? Which is ironic because we used to have a challenge, we did a challenge a couple years ago called the Screw Your Resolutions challenge and it was our alternative, our Balance 365 alternative to resolutions because so many of us have made resolutions and failed, right? Have you done that? Jen: Most people. Lauren: Yeah. Jen: In fact. Lauren: No, I’ve never done it. Jen: In fact, I keep my eye out for workout equipment around March and April because it all goes back for sale, you can get really good deals on treadmills around that time. Annie: Yes and workout clothes as well too, like they’ll go on, I mean, they’re not on sale right now necessarily but because it’s a popular time to be buying them. Jen: Yeah. Oh I mean second hand- Annie: Oh, OK. Jen: March, April, yeah people, they buy, they get the deals in December-January, they spend $2000.00 on a treadmill and then by March-April it’s back up for sale for like $400.00 So keep your eye out- Annie: Because that treadmill trend- Jen: on buy and sell websites. Yeah because you just hang laundry on it, really. This is what you do. I mean, I’ve been there as well. But I sold my treadmill when we moved last time and I really regret it because now I’m looking at getting another one. And but I’m going to wait I’m going to wait for the New Year’s resolution dropouts to put theirs up for sale- Annie: Yeah, she’s going to take advantage of you guys, listen. Jen: March-April. Annie: She’s going to prey on you. Lauren, what about you? Have you made a resolution and failed to keep it? Lauren: Yes, pretty much every year besides the last five. Yeah, it was always obviously diet exercise related too. But then I would add, like, other things so I would want to do all the things. Annie: Yep. Which we’ll talk about. Please don’t jump ahead of my outline. Lauren: I’m sorry. Annie: We’ve talked about this. Jen: I made a New Year’s resolution-ish. It was a couple years ago it was really big to choose a word, like choose a word for 2016 or 2017 whenever it was and I jumped on board that train and it was a success but we will talk about that later. I won’t skip us ahead. Annie: What was your word? Jen: It was respond. Annie: Oh, OK. Jen: Rather than react because I found myself, I was, like, you know, I could be quite reactive. Annie: No. Jen: So I really worked on that secondary, that response, when your inner B. F. F. comes in and it’s like “Whoa, chill out, girl.” Annie: Yeah, I dig that. Jen: What about this? Annie: Yeah. Jen: So then I would find, you know, I think it was 2016, I worked really hard on it and I’m much better at keeping my reactions under control and responding. Annie: Well, I’ll be interested, maybe a little bit later you can tell us about why that was so successful versus other attempts. But before we get any further, really, today we just want to discuss, I have 3 main reasons that we see resolutions kind of fall flat and I want to be clear that we are not anti resolutions, we’re not anti goals, we’re not anti action plans or whatever you want to tackle, resets, restarts, refreshes in the New Year because I’m totally one of those people that gets super excited about the idea of like a clean slate, like, that’s really, like, I love, like, a fresh start, going to start over. I get to do this. I’m going to do it right. It’s super exciting and super motivating but just the way in which people approach them and their expectations around resolutions are usually why they aren’t successful with them. Jen: Yeah we are pro, we want you to be successful. Annie: Yeah so we’re going to discuss 3 ways you can make your resolutions a little bit more successful because again, it’s not that there’s anything wrong with resolutions inherently, It’s more how we approach them and our expectations surrounding them. So let’s just dive right into it. The 1st one is that remember that you can set goals, create new habits, set intentions any time of the year, right? Like this is not something specific just to New Year’s Day or New Year’s Eve, you can do this February 1st, just the same as you can March 1st or May 15th, like whatever time you want to set new goals, you can make new goals and as I noted, I totally understand the excitement that comes when everyone else around you is doing the thing, right, and it’s contagious and I have severe FOMO, you know, fear of missing out so I feel this pressure like “Oh I want to do that, like, that’s really exciting, right?” Jen: Well, it can be like when you go shopping with your girlfriend and you only need one thing, like you need a pair of jeans and then you get in the store and your friends are like “I’m getting jeans. Oh, I also need earrings and look at this top, it’s so cute, and this coat” and then all of a sudden you’re like “Yeah, those things are so great. I should look at them too and I should get them too” and then all of a sudden you’re leaving the store with like 6 bags and you only want one pair of jeans, right? So during New Years, it’s just that you’re just surrounded by people changing all the things and you’re like “Well that is such a good idea, I need to address that in my life too. Oh and that would be great too and that too” and then all of a sudden you’ve got 10 New Year’s resolutions. Annie: And the power of suggestion, sorry, Lauren, go ahead. Lauren: I was going to say, well, even more than that for me is I would feel like I had to make a New Year’s resolution period, like even if I was not in a particular space in my life where I could handle a new goal or setting a New Year’s resolution, like, I had my daughter 5 years ago on December 1st and so it was like “Oh, I should make a New Year’s resolution” while I had an infant, you know, right, probably not the best time. Annie: Yes and I was just going to add to the power of suggestion is really, really strong around this year because Jen you’ve shared advertising budget numbers from the diet and the fitness industry, they spend a large percentage of their marketing budget this time of year. They are pushing, pushing, pushing- Jen: Yeah, the first few months of the year, the 1st quarter. I can’t remember what the numbers are, I’ve shared them on a past podcast but it’s like 65 percent of their marketing budget is spent in the 1st couple months of the year. Because yeah, so it’s everywhere. Annie: So you’re really, really, you’re likely seeing it in magazines and commercials and newspapers, in bookstores and anywhere you’re going, essentially, to buy this product, buy this program, purchase this service, purchase this membership- Jen: Yeah, people have no idea, like, how much thought goes into marketing and so even, you’ll see, I noticed in my local bookstore that throughout the year when you walk in there’s different tables set up featuring, you know, new books or this all these books on this topic. Well, in December or January the diet table comes to the very front of the store so when you walk in it’s right there. Because they know, they know that that’s the time to be selling these books, to put them right in front of you, get you thinking about it, it makes you buy them. We like to think we’re so in control of our choices but we really are not. Annie: I was just going to say that because I know, Annie 10 years ago would have walked into Barnes and Noble or whatever this bookstore, saw the diet book and “it’s like they knew what I wanted,” like, yeah, how did I, like, you know, how did they know but really? Jen: If you don’t even think about the change, it’s like, this must have always been here. Annie: Right, it’s like, like, you know, it’s like, it’s, now we have Amazon ads popping up on our feed, you know, like Lauren, you just talked about how you were, posted about your standing desk. Lauren: Oh my gosh, yes, I got this standing desk which is amazing, I got it from Costco, I don’t know if it’ll still be here when this airs but I got it from Costco and I posted about it on my story and I had never seen an ad for a standing desk before and after I posted it on my story I was started seeing Instagram ads for this other standing desk and it freaked me out. Jen: Oh. There’s so many conspiracy theories around what Facebook and Instagram listen to and of course they deny, deny, deny but that happens to me all the time. Sometimes I feel like I’m talking to a friend about something, like, in person- Lauren: Yes. Jen: Then I’ll start seeing those ads on my feed. Lauren: Yeah. Annie: There’s a meme that it’s like, of course, if I had a dollar for every time I started a sentence with “There’s a meme” on Instagram that says “Oh, oh, that’s weird how this showed up on my feed when I didn’t talk to anyone about it, I didn’t type it, I didn’t search it, like, it’s, like, there in your brains, you know- Jen: You thought it. Annie: Yes, but anyways, it is, you know, it’s kind of like when you go to Target and your kids don’t want goldfish until they see the goldfish and then you know and it’s like “Now I can’t live without the goldfish.” Jen: And you have to and there’s also food, food companies have to pay more to get their products on the shelf at eye level. Lauren: Yes. Jen: Do you know I mean because they know it leads to you choosing it more so they make a deal with, you know, whatever supermarket chain and they pay a fee to have their product at eye level, like, you really, if you know what I mean, like, it’s just there’s so much of this that goes on that consumers aren’t aware of. Annie: Right, which we kind of went off on a tangent there and I think that would make a really great podcast about how the the science and psychology behind marketing and how it works the way it does, especially when it comes to health and wellness but the point here is that you can set these goals any time of year, so even though the bookstores are pushing it or you might feel like you’re seeing these messages to get these really brand new fresh goals around your health and your wellness. It seems like it’s everywhere. Remember that you can set these 6 months from now, 3 months from now, any time a year. You don’t have to feel pressure to do it on New Year’s Day. Jen: Yes and now that we have told everybody about it, you will start noticing it and you can be more critical about it and this is called media literacy and media literacy has been found to be one of the greatest tools in preventing disordered eating and body image issues. So pass it on. Annie: Pass it on. Stay woke, right? Jen: Stay woke. Annie: OK. Number two, remember your why. Ask yourself “Does this really matter to you?” when you’re setting your New Year’s resolutions because along the same lines of getting caught up, this can tend to be following the leader, kind of like Jen said when you’re shopping with your girlfriend and in my experience, what’s personally happened to me before is one girlfriend dinner is like “Oh yeah, I’m going to join this gym, I’m going to start this program, I’m going to start this diet” and the rest of us are like “Oh yeah, like, I guess that sounds good,” like, “That sounds good to me, I’ll do that too” or like “Guess I hadn’t really given it that much thought but she’s done the research. And she seems to think it’s a good idea so I’ll do it too” and if you listen to our Stages of Change podcast with our Balance365 Coach Melissa Parker, you’ll know that skipping stages like contemplation, where you’re thinking about doing a thing and preparation, where you’re making plans to do the thing, are actually really vital to your success and this is one of the reasons people- Jen: Not skipping stages. Annie: Sorry, yes, not skipping stages. It’s really vital to your success and this is one of the reasons that people can fall flat on New Year’s resolution time is because they join the gym, they buy the meal plan, they sign up for the challenge or whatever it is they’re doing without really considering “Does this even matter to me? Is this a good time in my life to do this? Is this reasonable to think that I can do whatever is required to make this goal happen?” Just like Lauren said, like, she just felt this pressure to make a resolution and it’s like “Hey, I just had a baby. Maybe now isn’t the time to be all in on whatever it is I’m wanting to do” and if you give it some reflection and you come up with like “No, this isn’t OK. This isn’t the time, this isn’t the thing I want. That’s OK. It doesn’t mean that you’re stuck wherever, you’re out forever. It just means that maybe you need to re-evaluate and get some clarity on what your goal is and how you’re going to get there. Jen: Yeah, it often is related to, I think, feelings of guilt around holiday eating as well so, I mean, that’s why the advertising is so successful, right, because they know you’re feeling bad about all the eating and sitting around you’re doing over the holidays and that becomes your motivation, right, which is shame-based motivation, which we also know through research that shame-based motivation is not lasting. Lauren: Yeah, and I’ll add too on this that this is why we actually added a section in Balance365 it’s called The Story of You and it helps you to uncover what your values are and what your core values are and so not only does that help you when you are making changes because when you make a change if it connects with one of your core values you’re more likely to stick to it but it also can weed out this extra stuff so you can think back “Well does this really support any of my core values?” and if it doesn’t you can feel a lot better of saying like “Oh, this isn’t for me, like, it’s good for them, it’s not good for me.” Jen: Right. Annie: And circling back to what Jen said about shame-based marketing, you know, I think in the past when I have started a new diet or a new exercise routine on New Year’s Day it has usually been to combat those feelings of shame and guilt about eating too much, missing the gym because I’ve been busier than normal, the weather’s been crummy, not enough daylight, you know, whatever fill in the blank and they know this. Lauren: Yeah, that was always me, like it comes right after the holidays, right, where everyone’s crazy busy, there’s treats everywhere. And it’s just like, it’s kind of like a perfect storm, right, everyone’s doing it, you feel crappy, the advertising is being pushed to you, so it comes together on January 1st. Jen: Yeah and it’s just it’s all part of that roller coaster, though, you could start if you zoom out a bit and start identifying trends so most people wouldn’t binge over Christmas if they weren’t dieting before Christmas. Lauren: Right, yeah. Jen: And most people wouldn’t diet before Christmas if they were bingeing at Thanksgiving. Lauren: And then you wouldn’t feel crappy, right? And wouldn’t be like “I need to do something.” Jen: Right, so the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is also a very, very popular time to go on a diet so, you know, people go into the holiday, basically, diet to counteract their Thanksgiving bingeing and to prep themselves for Christmas. Someone just said the other day, told me a friend of theirs was working on losing 5 pounds in preparation for the holidays and I’m, you know, it’s funny kind of, but you’re also like, I just cringe and think, “Oh my gosh, like, you’re basically just announcing that you have an eating disorder and that you are starving yourself in preparation for being able to binge.” Lauren: Right and that just feeds right into the cycle. Jen: Yeah and then so you binge over Christmas and then you get back on that diet rollercoaster for January and then, you know, then you restrict, then you binge and then you’re restricting for your bikini season and then it’s just, it’s just wild. Annie: And most people are trying to stop that cycle in the binge, when they’re in the binge they want to pull all the way back to restriction which I totally get, like, that seems to be, like, “Well, duh, like, I, you know, I’m either all in or I’m all out, I’m on the wagon, I’m off the wagon,” like there’s just two extremes and our approach would be to just let that pendulum settle down in the middle like, don’t pull it so far back. Jen: Yeah, so Chastity, she’s in Balance365, she said the other day is that people want to stop bingeing but unfortunately they don’t want to stop restricting. However the solution to stop bingeing is to stop restricting as well. Lauren: Right. Jen: And people just really have a hard time wrapping their heads around that. Annie: Absolutely, I mean, it can be scary because it feels like you’re letting go of some of that control, especially if you’ve been dieting for years and that’s what you know, that a lot of women feel comfortable and in control when they’re dieting, even if they’re miserable, even if they’re white knuckling it. Lauren: I remember someone when we first started doing this had been dieting for years and years and she was terrified when we told her like stop counting your points, stop counting, like, just give yourself permission to eat and she was like “I will literally start eating and never stop.” Jen: I remember that too. Lauren: And like, spoiler, that didn’t happen and now she lives a free life and she doesn’t count and she’s happy with her progress but she was terrified, like there was a real fear for her. Jen: Right. Annie: So once again we went on a little tangent. Jen: As we do. Annie: I’m just looking at our outline, like “Remember your why” and now we’re talking about restriction and it’s all connected though, isn’t it? Jen: So remember your why. So remember that you don’t want to be on the diet roller coaster and that is your why for not jumping on board a new diet in January. Annie: Well and why am I doing this again, if I am being honest and years past it would have been to try to avoid or to remove some of those feelings of guilt and shame, so it’s like “OK, I’m just going to try to regain all of my control by doing all the things and doing them perfectly” and you know, again, it just, what that does is eventually perpetuates the cycle of this diet cycle. Jen: Yeah, an alternative to feeling guilty is to say “Wait a sec, I’m human and just like everybody else at Christmas, I indulge in the holiday foods and move along.” Annie: Yeah. Because the holiday foods are yummy. Jen: They are. Annie: They are yummy. And yeah and just cut yourself some slack, right? Lauren: Yeah. Annie: OK, so we covered the first two. A, you don’t have to make these New Year’s resolutions just this time of year, you can set goals or new intentions or create new habits any time of year, then you evaluate like “Does this really matter to me? Why am I doing this? What’s my purpose? What’s my mission behind this? What am I hoping to get out of this?” and then if you come to the conclusion that “I still want to move forward. I still want to make change” and your resolutions are around things like eating healthier, exercising more, drinking less, quitting smoking then we’re talking about changing habits which, shockingly, is something we’re pretty good at helping people do. Surprise! And Lauren you have some really good information about creating and changing habits, but essentially it boils down to you don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight because so often people go to bed on New Year’s Eve and they’re like, they set these plans and they’re going to wake up like a person with completely new habits on January 1st, like 12 hours later, new year, new me, right? Lauren: Right. That would be really nice. Annie: It would be great if it were just that simple, if all the change could happen. Jen: If worked, we would encourage it. Lauren: Yeah, right. Annie: Yeah, it’d be a heck of a lot quicker but will you share the statistics about why changing too many things at once isn’t likely to bode well for you? Lauren: Yes, so we share this all the time, actually but I find that it’s so eye-opening for people is that studies show that if you want to change a habit and you change one small thing and only that thing you have about an 80 percent chance of sticking with that change long term, which is actually really good for percentages. If you try and change too things at the same time your success rate of sticking with both of those things drops down to about 30 percent and then 3 or more changes at the same time your success rate drops to almost 0 sticking with all those changes and then the more things you add on, the less and less your success rate will be. Annie: That’s not very promising to change a lot of things at once is it. Lauren: No, so not only do you not have to, you shouldn’t if you care about sticking with it, right? Annie: Yes, so when you think about someone that wakes up New Year’s Day and is like I’m going to change all 3 of my meals, plus my snacks, plus my sleep habits, plus my water and alcohol consumption, now I’m also going to add going into the gym 5-6 times a week, that is so many behaviors that it takes to change, I mean we’re talking about, like, let’s take a look at a meal, like, what does it take to change a meal, like, it could change what you put on your plate, how you prepare your food, what kind of foods you’re buying at the grocery store, it might require, do you even go to the grocery store in the first place versus eating out, I mean, and those are the little steps that take to build a really great solid habit that so many people overlook. They just think “I’m just going to start eating a balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow, all the time, forever and ever amen.” Lauren: And our brains just don’t work like that. It’s just the way we’re wired and you know, we, like our brains, like consistency and constants and so it’s not going to bode well for you if you try and change everything all at the same time. Jen: I don’t even like going somewhere new in the grocery store, like a new aisle. Like when I when I’m looking at recipes and there’s just some whacko ingredient, you know, that either you can’t find in a regular supermarket or I’ve just never seen that before I’m like, “Next!” Like, I just really resist. Yeah. Annie: I think, yeah, I mean, obviously when it comes to cooking I’m the same way. I see it is a recipe with more than like four ingredients and I’m like “No, I’m out.” Lauren: Thank you, next. Jen: Yeah, I know as far as our plans on expanding our our recipe collection on our website and just looking at, like, when we had a woman making recipes for us this fall and the first couple she sent me I was like, “Listen, like chickpea flour is just not going to fly.” Lauren: I feel like we should have a test where like if Annie, Lauren and Jen can’t make it it doesn’t get put out there and we would be like, “Pizza. Quesadillas. Chicken.” Jen: Yeah yeah and so it’s like, I remember I would go all in like back in my dieting days on making things like cauliflower pizza crust. Lauren: Yes I would take so long to make meals and they would always taste like crap. Jen: Yeah and so but then it’s like, you know, five years later, we’re just having pizza, like just regular crust and it’s way better. Lauren: Like, it’s fine. Jen: It’s like all those steps, right, like all those steps to make, to just get in the habit of making these healthy pizza crusts and yeah just really makes no difference. Annie: And now, yeah, I feel good just throwing some veggies and some fruit and some extra protein on my Jack’s frozen pizza. Jen: Yeah, like, I’ll just have a side of cauliflower with my regular pizza. Instead of trying to work it into the crust. Annie: I really like how you say cauliflower. Lauren: Cauliflower. Annie: Anyways, yeah, but truly I think people really underestimate how much energy is required to change just one habit and it’s definitely a slower process but what we hear from women in our community that are working through our program is that it feels effortless, they’re not white knuckling through all these changes and just like, “Oh my gosh, I hope I can do this. I just need to do this for a little bit longer before it comes automatic.” They’re like, actually, they’re kind of like looking around like “Is this really all I’m doing? Like, this is all you want me to focus on?” and we’re like “Yeah, actually.” Jen: Just this one thing. Annie: That is. Jen: Yeah. Annie: And if you’re talking about changing existing habits, which that comes up a lot around New Years resolutions too is the best way to change an existing habit is to replace it with a new one and Lauren and I have a pretty good podcast, actually two podcasts on how habits are built, like Habits 101, and then how to change or break bad habits, so if you want more information on the science and the process behind habit building and breaking bad habits, I would highly encourage you to listen to those because, I mean, I think we give some pretty good tidbits. Lauren: It’s pretty good. Annie: I mean, it’s alright. And the other thing I want to add onto that too in terms of habit changing and going a little bit slower is to discuss the difference between outcome-based goals and behavior-based goals because so often, again, resolutions seem to be outcome-based goals. I want to lose 10 pounds. I want to run a 5K. I want to compete in this challenge or whatever and it doesn’t really address the behaviors, like, OK, how are you actually going to do that? What actions are you going to take to lose 10 pounds? Like I’m not poo-pooing weight loss as a resolution goal, your body, your choice. But how are you going to lose that 10 pounds? It might be I’m going to start exercising on Monday, Wednesday, Friday for 30 minutes or I’m going to replace, you know, X, Y, Z with vegetables on my plate or I’m going to increase protein or you know, whatever that looks like, we would encourage you to write your goals based off of your behaviors, not the outcome you want, because so often if you take care of the behaviors, which we have more control over, the outcome will just naturally be a byproduct of it and so often I see women doing all the right things and they don’t get the outcome they want and then they feel like a failure, you know, they’re making all these great changes. Especially when it comes to weight loss. We’ve seen women work their butts off to try to lose weight, you know, they’re maybe exercising more, they are addressing their self talk, they’re getting more sleep, they are cutting back on sugary drinks or alcoholic drinks or whatever that is they’re working on and they step on the scale and they’re down 3 pounds instead of the desired 10 pounds and all of a sudden they feel like they’ve failed. Lauren: Right. Jen: When they’ve actually succeeded in all these areas of life that a lot of people struggle to succeed in and it’s huge, it’s a huge big deal. Lauren: Yeah. Annie: Yeah, when really if you just zoom out and it’s like “Oh my gosh, look at all this great change I’ve made, I’m feeling better I’m taking better care of my body or you know, whatever it is, fill in the blank, that we just tend to lose sight of that when our goals are outcome based. Lauren: Also when they step on the scale and they see that, that they haven’t lost as much as they had hoped, they also a lot of times will be like “Well, what’s the point, right ?” and then they don’t continue doing those behaviors and it’s the continuation and consistency of those behaviors that’s going to lead to possibly them reaching their goal, right? Annie: Yeah, so the easiest way to turn your outcome based goal, if that’s what you were thinking about before listening to podcast, into a behavior based goal is to just ask yourself “How am I going to achieve that? How am I going to run a 5K? How am I going to run a marathon? How am I going to lose 10 pounds? How am I gonna?” Jen: Yeah. Annie: You know, like and then usually that how, that’s the behavior. Jen: Yeah and then realize that that outcome goal you have actually could be made up of a series of behavior changes that need to happen one at a time, therefore it may not happen as quickly as you like, which is OK. Life is long. Annie: Yeah, it’s the tortoise and the hare, right? Jen: It’s a journey. Annie: Yeah, as cheesy as that sounds, people are probably like, “Oh, come on.” Jen: It’s a journey. Lauren: Zen Jen over there. Jen: I know. Annie: Enjoy the process. Jen: Gandhi. Annie: We need one of those successory memes. You know, popular in the nineties. OK, well those are the three main points I wanted to discuss when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Is there anything you two would like to add? Lauren: I don’t think so. Annie: OK, let’s do a quick review. First of all, before you set your New Year’s resolutions remember that you can set these new goals, create new habits, set new intentions, you can have a clean slate any time of the year. I totally understand that it’s super enticing to have like new year, new me but you can do this on May 1st just as easily as you can January 1st. The second one is to remember your, why does this really matter to you? Are you just doing this because your girlfriends are doing this or because marketing is telling you to do this or is this something that you really desire and then on top of that are you willing to do what it takes to make that happen and sometimes the answer is no, like Lauren said, you know, she really maybe wanted some of the things she wanted after having Elliott but it just wasn’t, the timing wasn’t good and honoring that, and being like, “Hey, I can just put that on the back burner and wait a little bit to start that until I’m ready to make those changes and I’m able to make those changes and stick with them” is absolutely, that’s an OK answer. Jen: I know you always say, Annie, there is more than two options, it’s not always “yes” and “no”, there’s a third option which is “later.” Annie: I would love to take credit for that but that’s actually Lauren. Jen: Oh, I’m sorry, Lauren. Lauren: Yes. Annie: Yes. I was like, as soon as you said that I was like “Oh, I really wanted credit for it because it’s good, it’s good advice, but I’m going to be honest, that’s Lauren’s advice.” Yes, later is always an option which I think is, that’s goes back to your maturity about responding, Jen, versus reacting, you know, so many people can get reactive during New Year’s resolutions like they feel compelled to do something just because everyone else is doing them and it’s like, if you just have pause, like think like “Do I want this? Was I considering this before I heard Susan over here talking about her weight loss? Like. Jen: I always think of my inner BFF like she’s, she just like, she comes to me in that first second I react and then give it 20 seconds and my inner B.F.F. is sitting beside me like “Hey, girlfriend. Calm down.” Annie: That first voice in me though, she can be really kind of grumpy sometimes. Jen: She’s my naughty friend. She’s naughty. Annie: Let’s do it! Yeah! Is this is code for Annie and Lauren? Jen: There’s Annie and then there’s Lauren. Annie: Annie is like shoving you into the mosh pit at a concert, like “You can do it!” and Lauren’s like, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Jen: Let’s stay safe back here. Annie: Both are needed sometimes, OK? And the last point we just discussed today was that you don’t have to overhaul your life in one night, that to think that you’re going to go to bed on December 31st and wake up 8 hours later a completely different person doesn’t usually happen for people and that’s not, that’s not because you lack willpower or motivation or determination or discipline, that’s just the way behavior change works and it takes time and slowing down the process to focus one thing until that becomes automatic and then layering on brick by brick is usually the best place to start and we have a saying too that we stole from James Clear that “Rome wasn’t built in a day but they were laying bricks often” Lauren: We changed it to make it our own. What’s our new one? Beyonce wasn’t built in a day. Jen: Beyonce wasn’t built in a day. Annie: Beyonce also wasn’t built in a day. So if you could just lay a brick, you know, if you have these big goals 2019, 2020, 2021, start with a brick, really and lay your strong foundations, good solid habits, one by one and you’ll get there eventually and hopefully you’ll wake up one day and you’ll have this big beautiful Coliseum and you’ll be like “Oh, that was easy.” Jen: Exactly. Exactly. That really is how it happens. Annie: Yeah and I know that’s probably sounds a little bit ridiculous or a little bit too good to be true but you need to be able to play the long game for behavior change, you have to have big picture and patience which, I’m saying that to myself right now. I’m talking in a mirror. And yeah, hopefully this helps people build some better resolutions. I would love to hear what people are working on. So if you are working on something for the new year and you want to talk about it, please join our Facebook group, it’s, we’re Healthy Habits Happy Moms on Facebook. We have 40,000 women in our private Facebook group and if you need a place for safe support, reasonable advice and moderation, this is your place to go. Jen: I got a huge compliment yesterday. I was at a cookie exchange with 10 women and not many people know about my our company locally where I live and actually a couple women from my community just joined and the one woman said to me yesterday “Your group is the first place I’ve ever found that actually promotes you giving yourself grace.” Lauren: Aww. Annie: Can we like get a testimonial from her? Jen: I’ll ask her. She’s in Balance365 now. Annie: Oh that’s wonderful. Jen: She would be happy to. Anne: Yeah, I think it’s a pretty sweet place. We have amazing women, it’s really, it’s not it’s not us, it’s our community that’s made it such an amazing place to be, they provide support, applause and encouragement and tough love sometimes when it’s needed. It’s a great place to be, so find us on Facebook at Healthy Habits Happy moms You can also tag us on social media on Instagram and show us what you’re working on, show us your more reasonable New Year’s resolutions. Jen: Yes. Lauren: Yeah, I like that. Annie: Yeah, me too. OK, anything to add? Jen: No. Lauren: No. Annie: We’re good to go? Alright, well, we’ll talk soon, OK? Lauren: Bye. Jen: Bye. Welcome to episode 36 of ATG: The Podcast. We have a short episode this week, but still packed with lots of good stuff. First off, do you know a rising star in the library and information world? Would you like to see them recognized for their promising achievements? Look no further! ATG Media is thrilled to announce the first ever round of nominations for Up and Comers. Who exactly is an “Up and Comer”, you ask? They are librarians, library staff, vendors, publishers, MLIS students, instructors, consultants, and researchers who are new to their field or are in the early years of the profession. An Up and Comer can be someone you work with, someone you’ve presented with or shaken hands with at a conference, or someone whose accomplishments and potential you admire. Up and Comers are passionate about the future of libraries. They innovate, inspire, collaborate, and take risks. They are future library leaders and change makers. And they all have one thing in common: they deserve to be celebrated. The 2017 Up and Comers will be recognized in the December/January issue of Against the Grain, and 20 of these brilliant rising stars will be profiled in the same issue. In addition, they will be featured in a series of scheduled podcast interviews that will be posted on the ATGthePodcast.com website. Nominations for the inaugural round of Up and Comers is open through September 1. Don’t wait! Spread the good news, tell your friends and colleagues, and nominate your favorite Up and Comer at the link provided below. https://www.charlestonlibraryconference.com/up-comer-nominations-now-open/ There are several scholarships available for this year’s Charleston Conference. Springer Nature is proud to honor the legacy of Cynthia Graham Hurd by awarding a $1,500 travel grant to a librarian that has not had an opportunity to attend the Charleston Library Conference due to lack of institutional funding. To apply, librarians are asked to submit a project or initiative developed at their library to enhance diversity and inclusion. Topics can include diversity in selection of resources, providing services to support the research and learning needs of all segments of the academic community, improving educational outcomes, addressing issues including racial disparities, racial equity, income inequality, gender inequality and more. The application deadline is October 2. EBSCO is providing a scholarship of up to $1,000 for applicants who currently work as a librarian or para-professional. You can apply by sending one professional recommendation,, your CV, and a short essay on the following topic: A 2015 article in Entrepreneur declared that the One Certainty about the Future is the Pace of Change will Only Quicken. To be prepared for what the future holds, what are the top three juggernauts that librarians need to address to position libraries to succeed and to expand their position within their institutions? The application deadline has been extended to September 15. In an ongoing effort to help librarians grow professionally and increase their understanding of the changing state of knowledge resources, IGI Global is proud to continue the Academic Librarian Sponsorship Program, which sponsors librarians’ attendance of the industry’s most important events. 2017 application information will be posted the first week of September. We’d like to congratulate the scholarship winners who’ve already been announced for this year: Christian Burris from Smith Reynolds Library, Wake Forest University, won the Harrasowitz Charleston Conference Scholarship, and Molly J. Mulligan, an Electronic Resources Acquisitions Professional at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) Kraemer Family Library is the grand prize winner for the SAGE Publishing photo contest. Links to Christian’s winning essay and Molly’s winning photo are available on the Conference website at the link below. https://www.charlestonlibraryconference.com/scholarships/ Taylor & Francis have put together a great series of videos titled “Why Charleston?” showing clips of attendees from the 2016 conference that have been added to our YouTube channel. There are some shorter clips, each around a certain theme of the conference, and one full length video showing all of them together. Thank you to the team at Taylor & Francis for creating and sharing them with us. https://www.youtube.com/user/CharlestonConference/ A reminder that the Charleston Fast Pitch is still accepting proposals that pitch a winning idea to improve service at an academic or research library through September 15. The proposal should describe a project or venture that is innovative, useful and better or different than what has been done in the past or done currently. Selected proposers will have five minutes to pitch their idea before a Charleston Conference audience on Wednesday, November 8, and a panel of judges who will determine the finalists. The Goodall Family Charitable Foundation will sponsor two $2,500 awards for the finalists. Last year's winners were Syracuse University for their Blackstone LaunchPad for student entrepreneurship, and St. John Fisher College, for their Coordinated Collection Development API Project. A write up of the session is available on the conference blog, and an ATG Special Report on all the winners, runners up, and honorable mentions is available on the Against the Grain website. https://www.charlestonlibraryconference.com/fastpitch/ http://www.against-the-grain.com/2016/11/charleston-fast-pitch-competition/ http://www.against-the-grain.com/2017/01/atg-special-report-the-charleston-library-conference-fast-pitch-2016/ The program is coming together nicely, and we should have something to share with you in the next few weeks. Confirmed plenary speakers include Loretta Parham, CEO and Director of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library, Georgios Papadopoulos, Founder and CEO of Atypon, Jim O’Donnell of Arizona State University, and Brewster Kahle, Founder and Digital Librarian of the Internet Archive. We’re also excited to welcome back the “Long Arm of the Law” panel, organized and moderated by Ann Okerson, Senior Advisor to CRL. This year’s talk includes Charleston favorite William Hannay, Partner at Schiff Hardin LLP, and Ruth L. Okediji, Jeremiah Smith, Jr. Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. https://www.charlestonlibraryconference.com/speakers/ Now, Katina has some additions to her “If Rumors Were Horses” column in ATG. Thanks Katina! Hello everyone! The ATG and Charleston Conference teams are all fine in Charleston. We have heard from several of you after the shooting at Virginia’s Restaurant on King Street on Thursday, August 24. Thanks for everyone’s concern. The hard-working and focused Rolf Janke has recently moved to Raleigh, NC and he says it’s great to be back East again! Rolf has already had lunch with Beth Bernhardt in Greensboro. He is planning to drive to Charleston this November for the Conference. Rolf is founder and publisher of Mission Bell Media which publishes print and digital media for the library market with a focus on leadership.Titles from thePeak Series represent contemporary topics for academic librarian career development. http://www.missionbellmedia.com/ While we are talking about books, did you see the article in the Wall Street Journal about Sue Grafton (August 25, p. M3). Sue’s father was a novelist himself. Both parents were alcoholics though apparently her father was a successful lawyer and wrote detective fiction at night. Her mother was “vivacious, outgoing, pretty and friendly” when she was sober. Sue talks about being afraid of water in the basement of their huge house because of big rains and sitting at home with a butcher knife because she was afraid of “bad guys”. The stuff of fiction. Fascinating and wonderful article. Highly recommended. https://www.wsj.com/articles/author-sue-graftons-scary-childhood-home-1503413068 While we are talking about books, we have been spending a lot of time in our new place on Sullivan’s Island and my son Raymond, the real bookman, discovered sullivans-trade-a-book-mount-pleasant. It’s a delightful bookstore with wonderful inventory (we bought many new additions for our personal libraries). Between the Edgar Allan Poe Branch of the Charleston County Library on Sullivan’s and Trade a Book in Mt.Pleasant, I think we will have plenty to keep us reading! An aside, Poe was stationed on Sullivan’s as a private in the US Army in 1827 and 1828 and he used the island setting as the background of his story “The Gold Bug.” http://www.ccpl.org/content.asp?id=14637&action=detail& https://www.yelp.com/biz/sullivans-trade-a-book-mount-pleasant Was excited to learn that the great debater Alison Scott has been appointed associate university librarian for collection management and scholarly communication by the UCLA Library. She will assume her role on Oct. 2. “I am pleased to welcome Alison to the UCLA Library,” said Ginny Steel, Norman and Armena Powell University Librarian. “Her extensive, varied experience with collection development, licensing, budgetary constraints and statewide and national consortial initiatives will enable us to continue to build, preserve, and provide access to a rich, deep collection of physical and digital materials that support UCLA's fundamental mission of teaching, research and public service.” The associate university librarian has leadership, management, strategic policy and planning responsibilities for collection management functions and the library’s comprehensive scholarly communication program. The position oversees five major departments: cataloging and metadata, preservation, print acquisitions, scholarly communication and licensing and the Southern Regional Library Facility. Alison comes to UCLA from UC Riverside, where she has been associate university librarian for collections and scholarly communication since 2014. While there she has focused in particular on enhancing the library’s approach to collection development, crafting a curation strategy that views general and special collections materials as combined into distinctive collecting areas and incorporating faculty involvement into the review process. Prior to working at Riverside, Alison served as head of collection development at George Washington University and in a number of collection development roles at Harvard University’s Widener Library. She earned her doctorate in American and New England studies at Boston University, master’s degrees in library science and in religion from theUniversity of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Whitman College. I remember the Hyde Park Debate at the 2016 Charleston Conference between Alison Scott and Michael Levine-Clark on the topicResolved: APC-Funded Open Access is Antithetical to the Values of Librarianship In Favor: Alison Scott and Opposed: Michael Levine-Clark. The debate was conducted in general accordance with Oxford Union rules. All in the audience voted their opinion on the resolution before the debate began using text message voting, and the vote totals were recorded. Each speaker offered a formal opening statement, followed by a response to each other's statements, and then the floor was open for discussion. At the conclusion of the debate, another vote was taken. The winner of the debate was the one who caused the most audience members to change their votes. Members of the audience had an opportunity to make comments and pose questions as well. I remember voting for Alison because I thought she did a great debating job! No hard feelings please, Michael! Plus, I think I was once again against the grain of the group. www.against-the-grain.com www.charlestonlibraryconference.com Moving right along, we decided to take the debate online as a Webinar this year and we had a huge registration (363) on the debate topic of Resolved: The Journal Impact Factor does more harm than good. Debating were Ann Beynon (Clarivate Analytics) and Sara Rouhi(Altmetric). I have to give big kudos to Rick Anderson. The debates are his creation. Rick acts as the moderator for each debate. We are planning for more debates this year. Please send suggestions of possible resolutions! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=567UeNLKJx8 Several months ago, Tom Gilson and I were able to interview Andrea Michalek, Managing Director of Plum Analytics, to discuss its acquisition by Elsevier. Recently we learned that Elsevier is integrating PlumX Metrics into its leading products, expanding access to these tools to the wider academic community. We are updating the interview even as we speak. Watch for it on the ATG NewsChannel and in the print issues of ATG. Speaking of which, shocking us all, Elsevier has just acquired another US-based business, bepress. WOW! Here is some of the press release. -- Elsevier, today acquired bepress, a Berkeley, California-based business that helps academic libraries showcase and share their institutions’ research for maximum impact. Founded by three University of California, Berkeley professors in 1999, bepress allows institutions to collect, organize, preserve and disseminate their intellectual output, including pre-prints, working papers, journals or specific articles, dissertations, theses, conference proceedings and a wide variety of other data. “Academic institutions want to help researchers share their work, showcase their capabilities and measure how well they’re performing,” said Jean-Gabriel Bankier, bepress CEO. “Now with Elsevier we’ll be stronger and better by applying more technologies and data and analytics capabilities to help more institutions achieve their research goals.” The bepress model is unlimited, cloud-based, and fully hosted, and includes dedicated consulting and support. bepress offers Digital Commons, the leading hosted institutional repository software platform and a comprehensive showcase for everything produced on campus. It is also the only repository that seamlessly integrates with the Expert Gallery Suite, a solution for highlighting faculty and research expertise. The bepress CEO and employees will continue working with the company in Berkeley, California. The acquisition is effective immediately and terms of the agreement are not being disclosed. That’s it for this week! If you have comments or questions, you can click the “Contact” button on the podcast website, or you can email me directly at leah@charlestonlibraryconference.com. Thanks for listening, and I hope to hear from you soon!
Michael: Hello, everybody. Welcome to the January 2017 edition of the Option Seller Radio Show. This is Michael Gross of OptionSellers.com here with head trader, James Cordier, of OptionSellers.com. We’re starting off a new year here in the week of the Presidential Inauguration. James, it appears markets may be treading water here, kind of waiting to see how things play out after the Inauguration. What are your thoughts on the markets here as we start the new year? James: Well, Michael, welcome to 2017, as well. Really excited about the next 12 months, and we’ll see what the markets offer us as far as opportunities and looking at landscape as we go forward. The stock market certainly got a shot in the arm after the election, thinking that a Trump presidency is going to be very business friendly. The stock market certainly enjoyed that; however, over the last 3-4 weeks it is simply treading water going sideways, waiting for another idea. As far as “Will this actually help the economy? Will some of the Trump policies that are being tossed around actually be and do what we are hoping for the economy?”, the stock market is kind of going sideways waiting for a little bit more information. I think you’re right – right after the Inauguration I think people are going to get either the warm and fuzzies of the new president or possibly a little bit of a caution and then the stock market has some profit taking. The one thing that’s interesting right now is the put-call ration is the most bullish it has been in the stock market in years. Usually, that’s a bit of a caution flag for the market to have a correction. I guess we’ll find out in the next few weeks. Michael: Yeah, I saw Soros is one of the guys that took a beating on betting against the stock market with the Trump election. The big shooters aren’t always right. Of course, us here, we don’t trade the stock market but we do watch it closely, primarily because: one, a lot of our investors are in it and, two, because it can have an overall impact on a lot of other things going on in other markets. So, not a direct impact, but it’s something that we do keep an eye on. What we’re going to talk about here this month is obviously diversifying into commodities and we’re going to talk about a big advantage you have as a commodities investor. That big advantage is seasonal tendencies and commodities. January offers a plethora of seasonal tendencies that we can watch and take advantage of, and that’s what we’re going to talk about this month. James, why don’t we start out with some of our listeners that may not be familiar with seasonals. We do talk about them a lot, but maybe just start off by explaining exactly what a seasonal tendency is in a commodities market. James: Michael, that’s a really good point that you make about seasonals that do come up this time of year. For currency traders, they don’t know what a seasonality is. Trading silver, you probably don’t know what a seasonal is; however, trading corn and coffee and heating oil and crude oil is simply a propensity for a market to make a particular move during a particular time of the year based on supply and demand. New production that comes online certain times of the year, some of the biggest demand, certainly, for certain markets, comes at a particular time of the year. For example, heating oil and crude oil often starts getting large demand in the winter for heating oil and driving season for crude oil. The coffee market certainly gets a bump usually in December and January as demand for coffee, especially in the western hemisphere, does increase as temperatures cool. The propensity for the market to fall off starting March, April, and May, when temperatures in the United States and western Europe start to warm, people simply drink less coffee. That’s basically the ABC’s of seasonal trading. It seems incredibly simplistic but if you followed, and certainly we follow, the price of unleaded gasoline going into driving season, and the price of soybeans going into planting season, you become a true believer. Certainly, that is something how we like positioning portfolios using a portion of seasonality to diversify accounts, and January-February seem to be 2 months that offer the most trades like we’re describing. Michael: Now, we are going to talk about some of the more pronounced seasonal tendencies that do tend to happen in January and February, but, before we do that, we want to cover briefly here one of the mistakes people make, and maybe one of the misinterpretations people have about seasonal tendencies. A lot of people, when they first find seasonals, they look at them and it looks like they’ve found the Holy Grail of investing, the secret hand behind the markets. There are certain factions of truth to that, but the mistake most people make is they use them improperly. In other words, they may look at a seasonal chart and say, “Boy, this average looks like it falls every year on January 10th, and so I’ll sell it on January 10th and buy it back on January 31st because that’s when it looks like it goes up again.” What people don’t realize is that’s an average and trying to time that to the day is extremely difficult. A lot of people that try and do that end up losing and then they say, “Oh, well seasonals don’t work. They’re no good.” That is absolutely not the case; in fact, when you combine the strategy of selling options with a seasonal tendency, it can become a very powerful asset to your investment arsenal. James, can you maybe touch on or explain why that’s the case? James: Well, option selling, as the majority of our listeners know, is certainly putting odds in your favor. A lot of our clients and a lot of people that we speak to make it seem like you’re betting against the house. We are the ones selling the options, the people that come into the casino, if you will, are buying options. When you take the percentages of options expiring worthless and you combine that with seasonalities of when the market usually rallies or usually falls, you’re really putting the odds in your favor, but you have to keep your eyes open. Every single year you’re not going to have a seasonal tendency work the way it does on its 15 or 30 year average. You need to be aware of what the current conditions are in that particular market and see if it’s trading seasonally prior going into a sell or a buy for a particular market. Michael: One thing to mention there, too, is if you’re a futures trader or even some guys try to trade ETF’s with seasonals, which I do not recommend, but for futures traders, their timing has to be perfect. Option sellers, you don’t need perfect timing because you’re selling way above or way below the markets. So, if you miss the seasonal move that happens a couple weeks early or a couple weeks late, it doesn’t really make a big difference to you as an options seller, where if you’re a futures trader it can make a huge difference. So that’s one additional reason why combining option selling with seasonals can be such a powerful strategy. As far as the markets, I want to talk about one, James, you and I spoke about earlier that’s a little bit different this year. That’s the crude oil/unleaded gas market. We talked a lot in November about some possible big moves coming up in seasonal’s tendency in crude oil, the potential for prices to start moving higher, and we’ve had a little shift this year. Do you want to talk about that and what you’ve seen happening this year in the crude oil market seasonally? James: Michael, it’s interesting, crude oil and unleaded gas normally is extremely weak in the December-January time frame. Then, as you start approaching driving season, you normally see a large increase in price, albeit slow and steady, but it does go from its low in January to often its high in June and July. 2017 is certainly a different trade this year. With the first announced production cut by the largest world oil producers in the last dozen years, certainly it’s going to change the seasonality for this year. We were seeing crude oil pushing down into the low 40’s and then, lo and behold, Saudi Arabia and Russia and some of the other largest producers in the world decided we need to do something about balancing this market. They did come together and they did announce what seems to be production cuts that are sticking, to a certain extent, and the oil market, which normally rallies from January to June, made that entire rally the days and weeks after the announcement. So, like I was saying earlier as far as keeping your eyes open in reference to what’s happening on any particular year, 2017 is a perfect example of that. Michael: So, you think as far as a seasonal move goes, where the normal seasonal for crude or unleaded tends to start pulling prices up in January in anticipation of driving season, you think we’ve already seen the bulk of that move already? James: I really do. We will have stronger demand for products such as gasoline starting in March and April; however, we have oil pushing in the low-mid 50’s right now. A lot of the production cuts that apparently will take place at approximately 1 million barrels, it’s thought that those missing barrels can come back onto the market relatively soon. We’re expecting the seasonality this year of higher prices going into driving season muted quite a bit. Michael: So, in the near term, you’re not necessarily bearish prices, you’re just not as bullish as you normally would be, simply because the price has already moved up. What’s the strategy to trade it then? James: Well, the strategy is actually one of our favorites. The fact that we do have fewer barrels coming online from OPEC and non-OPEC nations should underpin the market. We should not see oil trade into the low 40’s, certainly not the high 30’s, going into driving season. That certainly is not going to happen, especially with the OPEC and non-OPEC production cuts. We would be really interested in selling puts in the low-mid 30’s for crude oil for later this year delivery. At the same time, the fact that the market has already done its seasonal rally and we expect the U.S. production to come online, we would not see oil go into the mid-upper 70’s. Practically ideal for the clients who follow along and the listeners that we hear today that know about what’s called a strangle, you would sell crude oil puts in the low 30’s and crude oil calls in the high 70’s. I think that is a really good opportunity as far as collecting premium on both sides of the market. There’s a lot of volatility and that’s when you get the luxury of being able to sell a strangle. I think, right now, the crude oil market is practically ideal for doing that right now. Michael: … and that’s what, close to a $40 strangle there? That’s a $40 window prices could move and both options still expire worthless? James: Well, that’s how we started out the conversation today with selling options far out-of-the-money. We’re strangling oil $40-$45 from the put to the call and we feel very confident that crude oil, which used to have large swings in the past, is not going to have a move like that, not in 2017. Oil is a great value in the mid 40’s. It’s quite a sale if it gets in the 60’s. Certainly, our strangle would be $10 above and below that. That’s the way we like to play it. Michael: All right. For those of you listening that want to learn more about seasonal tendencies, how they work, we did devote 2 full chapters to seasonals in The Complete Guide to Option Selling. If you do want to see some of our favorite there and some of the ones we recommend for individual investors you can find those in chapters 15 and 16. That’s in the new Third Edition. Of course, if you want to purchase a copy of that you can at www.optionsellers.com/book. You get it at a discount at Amazon or Barnes and Noble there. Let’s move on to talk about another seasonal tendency that does appear to be tracking closely this year, and that’s over in the grain markets. We have 2 markets there we’re watching very closely. Both the soybean and the wheat market have strong seasonal tendencies that tend to start in January. I’m going to talk about wheat here for just a second. As far as the tendency goes in wheat, wheat has a strong seasonal tendency to start declining in price in January. Unlike most of the grains, wheat is the only market that can grow in the winter. In fact, you may not know this, but, 75% of the wheat grown in the United States is winter wheat. Therefore, that gives it a different seasonal tendency than the other grains, from oats to corn to soybeans. Winter wheat sprouts in January, typically. Unlike the other commodities, it doesn’t have extreme heat to deal with. There are some weather factors, but typically once that wheat crop sprouts a lot of the anxiety comes out of the market and once that sprouts and it starts growing, a lot of traders will start selling wheat because the fear of the upcoming winter wheat crop tends to start to come out of the market. That’s why you often see wheat prices start to decline in winter and continue that weakness through spring. Obviously if your investor wants to take advantage of that, you may look at a call selling approach. We’ve taken that a step further and that involves a different market. That’s the soybean market, which has a different seasonal. James, you’re going to talk about soybeans here a little bit. James: Michael, that’s interesting. A lot of investors, whether they’re close to commodities or they simply keep one eye on them from time to time, would think that corn, wheat, and soybeans are always moving in the same direction. Soybeans have very different fundamentals and very different seasonality than the wheat market does. In the winter, January and February especially, demand for soybeans and soybean meal is at its greatest, as many U.S. producers and producers around the world are feeding livestock. Of course, that is when demand is the greatest for protein seed. At the same time, in South America, quite often you’ll have weather problems because it is grown in so many areas. Especially in Brazil and the surrounding southern countries of Brazil, they seem to be having, once again, some weather developments down there that are supporting prices. At the same time, the weather in the United States, for especially the Midwest, is always either too wet, too dry, too hot, or too cold. Sure enough, a weather premium starts getting built in the months of March, April, and May. For soybeans, January is usually quite a strong buy time as far as expecting prices to start moving up, just the opposite of the wheat. For those reasons, we like selling puts below the soybean market in the months of January and February. It’s almost a squeeze, if you will, by being short wheat and going long soybeans over the next 90-120 days. Certainly, that is something that we have followed closely in the past and, sure enough, looks like it’s setting up again for 2017. Michael: Yeah, we talk a lot about combining strategies to boost your odds, how the option strategies you can’t just view them in a vacuum when you’re trading them in a portfolio. You look at how one position offsets the other and a perfect example of that is one of the things we’ve talked about here. It’s called the Minnesota Squeeze. We’re not going to go into it here, but we are going to explain that in detail in your upcoming Option Seller Newsletter, which is slated to come out next week. We have a very special combined January/February seasonal issue and we are going to show you how you can combine these two seasonals to really boost your odds when it comes to getting those worthless expirations, selling the wheat into the growing season fade, and in buying the soybeans on the potential weather rallies in addition to winter being a high-demand season for soybeans. That will be in your upcoming special issue January/February newsletter. Look for that the week of January 23rd. In addition to that, in your upcoming newsletter, it is a special issue on seasonals so we’re going to talk in a little bit more detail in some things you can do to put these seasonal tendencies in your favor. It really is an advantage you have as a commodity options seller, as opposed to being in the stock market or bonds. It doesn’t really exist in any other asset class, so it’s something you can take advantage of in commodities. We’re also going to cover another subject that’s near and dear to our reader’s hearts and that’s staying properly diversified and how sometimes investor fear, even savvy high-net-worth investors, can let fear get in the way of getting properly diversified. There’s some good stuff in this month’s newsletter. I hope you enjoy it. James, before we go this month, let’s talk about one of your favorite markets, as we continue our coverage of big seasonal tendencies this month, that is the coffee market. We just published a special coffee article this week that is available on the blog at www.optionsellers.com/coffeejan. Let’s talk a little bit about coffee. We’ve got a strong seasonal tendency for weaker prices coming up here. Can you talk a little bit about that, James, and why that tends to occur? James: Michael, the coffee market looks like in 2017 it will be trading seasonally. Often, the winter time frame is when many of the producers in South America and Central America have to watch the weather quite closely. As long as those areas get ample rains, cherries then form on trees and, of course, those become green beans and later on roasted into the lovely mocha color that we all enjoy… most of us do each morning. Once the fear of the weather patterns in South America and Central America dissipate, and they usually do, that is normally short-lived and it looks like set-up is taking place again this year. At the same time, during the winter period is the strongest demand. So, we do have in western hemisphere areas the strongest and most consumption of coffee is in the winter and colder months. As we get into March, April, and May a lot of tendency does go to either soft drinks or flavored waters and I know that sounds kind of interesting to be talking about that, but when you multiply it by 300 million people in America, changing their drinks by just a slight amount really does make a large difference. Quite often in the winter, we have the most fear for any type of drought conditions in the coffee growing regions. That is now behind us. Coffee consumption in the United States will start to taper in February and March, and that is why we usually look to sell calls in coffee at the very beginning of each year when the seasonality and propensity seems to be setting up. 2017 looks like, yet, another year to be selling calls in this market. Coffee has been trading around $1.50 a pound on and off for the last quarter or two. The market did bump up here recently on what was expected to be a slightly smaller production in exports out of Vietnam. Then, earlier this week it was just announced that Vietnamese exports were up 25-30% from the previous year. Once again, knowing your fundamentals is really important. When you can combine that with the seasonalities and the odds of selling options, you can find out just by watching this for maybe 12 months why we do follow seasonalities and why it can combine with selling options to be really good for someone’s portfolio. Not every single time, like any other investment, but, on the averages, I like where we stand. Michael: Needless to say, as an option seller here in January/February, certainly no shortage of opportunities coming our way. If you’re a managed client, you have obviously seen the majority of these trades in your account thus far, and we certainly look forward to some more of those coming our way as we work through the first quarter. If you’re not yet an account, these are markets you can look at and maybe learn a little bit more how these trades work. We do have some availability for new account consultations in February. If you are interested in a managed account that is your first step. You can call Rosemary at our main office at 800-346-1949 to inquire about availability for those. If you’re one of our international listeners you can call at 813-472-5760 or you can also e-mail… that is office@optionseller.com. James, thank you so much for your insights this month. James: My pleasure, Michael. Always great chatting about what it is we do for our clients and our listeners. Beginning of this year looks like there might be some very good landscape and some very good opportunities. We’ll just have to wait and see. Michael: Well, perfect. Everybody, have a great month of option selling. It’s 2017- if you’re not diversified into alternative assets this is a great year to think about it. We wish you all a great month of option selling and we’ll talk to you next month.
While Renaissance Technologies makes most other hedge funds look foolish, even the independent trader can copy their discipline NFLX, PANW Long-time followers of mine in this bull market know that every quarter I go over the holdings of hedge fund Renaissance Technologies because they were one of the early quant houses that made algo trading so successful and popular. The founder, Jim Simons, was a mathematics professor in the 1970s who never thought about the markets much. He sort of stumbled into testing some theories on stocks, and the rest is history as he was pulled headlong into the markets and created a powerhouse with over $50 billion AUM (assets under management). And Simons made a point of not hiring MBAs, traders, or anyone with a background in finance. He only wanted physicists, engineers and other quantitative problem-solvers to come work for him and mine the data of markets to find unique correlations, patterns and new edges. What kind of data patterns and correlations are they after? Well, with 90 Ph.Ds. on staff, mostly math, science, and engineering types, we can only guess that they are sifting through mountains of fundamental, price, economic, weather, and consumer patterns, looking for those small anomalies between individual stocks and industries and other asset classes. Mining Data Others Ignore If it’s a popular, well-known correlation, they don't want anything to do with it. They hunt in the noise of tons of data for things that others can't see, or are not even looking for. This week, Matt Levine at Bloomberg View wrote briefly about Renaissance after colleague Katherine Burton published a full story on the company and its funds and practices for the December/January issue of Bloomberg Markets magazine. Here's how Levin opens his piece, quoting data from Burton's story... The big problem with Renaissance Technologies, the Long Island-based "pinnacle of quant investing" founded by Jim Simons, is that its Medallion fund makes too much money. Medallion was up 21 percent for the first six months of 2016. It was up 35.6 percent last year, 39.2 percent the year before, 46.9 percent the year before that. This keeps going. The last down year was 1989. The fund had a rough few days in August 2007, but ended the year up 85.9 percent. It has returned about 40 percent per year, on average, net of fees, since it started in 1988. Of course it can't keep compounding returns that way because of the size factor. What you can do well with a 5 billion dollars you can't necessarily as well, much less better, with 50 billion. And that's why they are forced to simply return profits to investors, who are primarily employees now since the fund was closed to new investors in 2005. Matt Levine's piece on Bloomberg View can be found here and the full Burton story is linked above. Can a Human Trader Copy Black Box Success? While the computer programs that work for Renaissance are still a big mystery -- like we don't know how many strategies just trade intra-day to make money -- it's safe to say that they create a lot of turnover in stocks, exploiting new patterns or "edges" in thousands of stocks. But doesn't that mean a lot of extra risk? What most people miss about the success of the algos and black box trading systems is that they run through markets with big size in thousands of stocks and instruments because the risk control is automated too. It’s not like you or I trading 100 stocks at once and going crazy trying to keep track of the risk and profits. They program the computer models to seek and destroy profit opportunities and to manage the risks in real-time too so that they are never destroyed. So speed and continuous, instant access make the difference too, especially if the model is wrong about an opportunity. In that way, they take human emotion completely out of the decision-making equation. With that I want to introduce you to our guest today, who is like David to the Goliath Renaissance. Jeremy Mullin is a colleague of mine at Zacks where he starts with a simple quant model built on earnings momentum – the Zacks Rank -- and then overlays his own suite of technical trading filters and what I will broadly call “behavioral analysis” because he pays attention to extreme moves in stocks that are often driven by algo trading that is exploiting investor fear and greed in the markets, which therefore sets up new opportunities for him. Jeremy has spent the last 13 years as an equity, futures and options trader. His main focus when trading stocks is high beta equities and earnings moves. He uses technical tools when entering and exiting trading setups, but also watches order flow to get a “feel” for market direction. Wear your knits. Tip: pick your hand knits first. Choose the rest of your outfit accordingly! Shoes should be comfy (and not new). Something you won't mind if they get covered in muck. Bag/purse- try not to make it too big. Camera- capture the fun. For me, iPhone is great. Pen + paper- in case you see a pattern you want to jot down name of etc. If you're a digital person you could take photos and jot them down later. Check out vendor list in advance. Make list of MUST go to vendors and where they are located. Make list of what you'd like to buy yarn for. Put list of what you need on phone/paper (something that doesn't require internet) cell service is getting better but can still be spotty. Bring snacks/water. Aim to eat at non-traditional times. Everyone wants to get lunch at 12 or 1. It's hard to do when you just want to shop and see and chat. I recommend setting timers on your phone if you're the type who can get lost in the day. Bing a mix of cash and card if possible. Food vendors sometimes only take cash Some booths line for cash and one for cards. if have both- you can pick shorter line. Don't pack too much knitting. Simple sock etc. bring extra sock needle or hat needle. You may want to cast on right away! Many things at the really packed booths at Rhinebeck DO SELL OUT. Some vendors bring stock for Sunday. Some don't. Many people like to do a loop before committing to things but if there's only a couple and you're going to majorly regret it if its gone later. Consider buying it on the first pass.
