Things may look bleak for the European Union in the depths of winter, with challenges across the board: the threat of a trade war with the US, weakened political figures in Germany and France, European farmers menacing protests about the Mercosur deal, an uncertain outcome for the conflict in Ukraine, plus budgets being tightened for households and governments across the bloc. But despite or perhaps because of those threats, Europeans' sentiment is on the up: 51 percent of Europeans tend to trust the EU, the highest level since 2007; while 44 percent have a positive image of the bloc, a figure that's stayed more or less constant since 2010. Those figures are according to a recent Eurobarometer poll.

Another edition of our EU election series, on individual countries and regions in the EU: The Republic of Ireland is considered to be one of the most pro-EU member states, and the Eurobarometer poll that came out this spring bears that out: 67 percent of respondents said that the EU conjures up a positive image. But being pro-European does not necessarily mean supporting the traditional pro-EU parties in Ireland. Indeed, this election campaign has seen increased support for independent candidates. Is that trend related to the big social challenges that Ireland is facing - housing, and the cost of living?

European elections represent a crucial moment: they give EU citizens a say in the political direction of the European Union. After declining ever since the first European direct elections in 1979, electoral turn out increased in the 2019 elections to reach 50.6 % largely due to youth participation (according to a post-election Eurobarometer survey). Echoing the 2019 motto 'This time I'm voting', the 2024 one might be: 'I did it again!' The 2024 European elections could be a turning point for youth engagement for several reasons. - Original publication on the EP Think Tank website - Subscription to our RSS feed in case your have your own RSS reader - Podcast available on Deezer, iTunes, TuneIn, Stitcher, YouTube Source: © European Union - EP

In Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, the Commission announced a revision of the 2014 Tobacco products directive which also includes provisions for restricting the advertising and promotion of electronic cigarettes and refill containers. However, around four in ten (39%) respondents in a Eurobarometer published in February 2021 said they have seen advertisements or promotions for e-cigarettes, liquids or refill cartridges. In particular, those aged 15 to 17 were more likely to be exposed to online promotion in social networks or blogs (60% compared to 33% of those aged 18-24), but less likely to mention sales points (19% compared with 40%). In a recent interview, Italian MEP Alessandra Moretti told EURACTIV it has been “amply demonstrated” that new tobacco products can act as a gateway for a new generation of smokers, and that “the US Food and Drugs Administration has officially declared the dramatic spread of these devices among the young and very young to be an ‘epidemic'”. “Unfortunately, they are the means of hooking the new generations into nicotine addiction, since the old cigarette is no longer attractive to young people,” she said adding that this worrying attractiveness for young people and non-smokers needs an update of both European and Italian legislation. In its report on the application of the directive, the Commission underlined that the application of the advertising restriction “continues to be challenging, especially in information society services and on social media where young people are particularly exposed/targeted'. Protecting minors from vaping was one of the priorities included in the latest version of a responsible marketing code for the electronic cigarette presented by the industry association Independent European Vape Alliance (IEVA) in October. The Code was established by IEVA and other national associations. “Youth protection is the main objective of this code,” IEVA's president, Dustin Dahlmann, explained in a webinar to present the code. In other words, advertising should never be aimed at minors. “E-cigarette marketing is focused exclusively on adult smokers, no child or teenager should ever use an electronic cigarette,” Dahlmann stressed. Protecting youth While at the moment the number of minors smoking electronic cigarettes is quite low, in recent months, international studies have shown the rise of vaping among young people, webinar participants warned. Dahlmann stressed a certain tendency to ‘talk' in the media about electronic cigarettes without alerting to the fact that young teenagers smoke them, and that this

Má ešte zmysel posielať celé triedy do karantény? A ako vníma hejt voči vedcom? The tiny island of Malta is an overachiever in curbing the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Politico. Before the end of August, the Maltese government announced that 90% of the population over 12 years of age is fully vaccinated. This meant that the first phase of the vaccination programme was largely complete before rolling out boosters to vulnerable populations from mid-September. But it's not enough to say that vaccinating the population was easy because Malta is so small. Data from Eurobarometer surveys and the WHO show that vaccine hesitancy was not that uncommon before the pandemic. In the Eurobarometer survey, over a third said they believed in the conspiracy that viruses were produced in government labs in order to control the population - that's above the EU average. So how did Malta manage such a successful vaccination campaign? To find out, Daiva talked to public health and infodemic expert Prof. Neville Calleja and the vaccination programme's coordinator Steve Agius. In this episode, Eva and Daiva discuss what they learned. Our reporting is supported by IJ4EU and Alfred Toepfer Stiftung. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week we note that the Swedish Skeptics' article from last week concerning Thomas Erikson's nonsense personality book “Surrounded by Idiots” has gotten some attention from other skeptics, among other things Pontus was a guest on the last episode of the Skeptic Zone podcast to talk about it. In history this week we talk about Desmond Morris and his role in the Aquatic Ape hypothesis and then Pontus Pokes the Pope about the fact that the two living popes are at odds regarding celibacy and also that the charity money from Peter's Pence goes straight into the coffers of the Vatican. In the news this week: Contrary to what you may have heard, Finland does not plan to go to a four-day working week, in Russia 800 science papers have been retracted and the Eurobarometer shows that EU citizens are concerned about climate change. Andrew Wakefield will screen the new film Vaxxed II at a public venue in Notting Hill, the Goop Lab will feature the Dutch “Iceman” Wim Hof, an Italian court has against scientific consensus ruled that mobile phones cause brain tumours and John Cook is publishing a comic book about climate change denial. We hope Skeptics will help translate it! We end by handing a Really Wrong Award to the UK Home Office and the Ministry of Justice for believing in lie detectors. Enjoy! Junker: The Good, The Bad and The FunInspired by Junker writing the Politico newsletter on his last day in office. He was being a bit retrospective so we thought it would be a good opportunity to fawn over/shit on himThe GoodJunker was elected with the Spitzenkandidaten - where he was the EPP's lead candidate. Which compared to Mr Goldman Sachs (Barroso) was an improvement. Also look at the shit load of infographics they produced to show how cool they were: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/sites/beta-political/files/key_figures_for_the_eu_2014-2019_en.pdf?utm_source=POLITICO.EU&utm_campaign=56ef0a5c3b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_11_29_05_42&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_10959edeb5-56ef0a5c3b-190266981 Some of that is fine/accurate... but certainly not all. Let's focus on the actual good stuff: Media accessibility: Junker did seem to actually want to engage with the public and make the EU more accessible. Come up a lot in the "fun section" but he made a lot of public appearances where he really tried to sell the EU as a good thing. The Euronews livestream thing was actually very watchable and earnest He did a reasonable job of selling the EU... while there are a lot of factors including the B word, it's notable that anti-EU sentiment from far right parties has lessened. Partly because it's been semi-not terrible under Junker. Mild independence from the national level government seems to have done it favours (they quote that Eurobarometer shows trust in the EU is generally higher than for national govs with some notable exceptions - UK, France, Greece) The FunThat handwritten tweet video he did https://twitter.com/QuickTake/status/1185073056148000768?s=20 The time he yelled at Channel 4 The little black book of enemieshttps://www.politico.eu/article/jean-claude-juncker-keeps-little-black-book-of-enemies/ That time he called Orban a dictator That time he held Tsipras' hand while walking out of the room That other time he held Orban's hand while walking out of the room All the slapping he did That hair thing he did https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSCarR0UjDQ The League of Arab States - EU summit where he took a phone call on stage, then made a "my wife" joke. The other time he did that when at a photoshoot with Robert Fico but then said it was his wife first, then that it was Merkel second. That time he stopped Sky News from having an interview with him at a summit by constantly interrupting them about how great Sky News is and that it's always on in his house. The BadIn January 2017, leaked diplomatic cables show Juncker, as Luxembourg's prime minister from 1995 until the end of 2013, blocked EU efforts to fight tax avoidance by multinational corporations. Luxembourg agreed to multinational businesses on an individualised deal basis, often at an effective rate of less than 1%Uphold Marxist-Leninist-Junckerist thoughtEuropean Forum Alpbach in Austria. That said, I do distinctly remember hanging up the phone after a lengthy conversation with my dear friend Bill Clinton, only to receive a phone call from Jacques Chirac a few moments later. Without a moment of pretense, Jacques asked me: “But why did you say that like that to Clinton, Jean-Claude?” Thanks for listening in, mon ami. Turns out, it’s not always the U.S. listening in on your phone calls."The BadThese are ones he acknowledges: Accession: promises were made, a country changed its name and Macron changed his mind Cyprus and the relationship with Turkey in generalThe FunJunker is an alcoholic if you believe his detractors. and by detractors I mean the British press. People may remember that David Cameron was very against Junker. His loss was part of the long saga of complaining for reforms and special treatment. Didn't do him any good inside his party for that whole leaving referendum thing https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/27/david-cameron-loses-jean-claude-juncker-vote-eu Maybe Junker is just a fun guy who knows how to party, David? Ever consider that? Why else would he have an Honorary Doctorate of the Miami University? https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-eu-juncker-schaeuble-idUKKBN0F647320140701 .. but also maybe not, there was also the "sciatica" thing at the Nato summit https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44812352The BadThat time he installed his chief of staff Martin Selmayer as secretary-general of the commission, an enormous promotion. Background: Life satisfaction is a cognitive and evaluative judgement of one’s outlook on life and an integral component of subjective wellbeing. There is a strong association between life satisfaction and mental and physical health, but it is currently unclear how environmental factors may influence life satisfaction. Our aim was to investigate the association between environmental factors and life satisfaction and to gain a better understanding of general life satisfaction statistics in the EU. Methods: We used a three-level mixed effects logistic regression model to examine the effects of sociodemographic, macroeconomic and environmental factors on life satisfaction using a large sample size from Eurobarometer surveys (n = 268,696) representative of 27 EU countries. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews between May 2014 and June 2015. Results: We found wide variation between countries, as well as between regions within the same country with regards to levels of life satisfaction. Having adjusted for individual sociodemographic factors, our analysis did not indicate statistically significant associations of mean temperature and precipitation with life satisfaction. However, there was a statistically significant association between environmental degradation and lower life satisfaction (OR = 0.98; 95% CI: 0.97–1.00). Consistent with existing literature, our results show statistically significant effects of sociodemographic factors such as sex, financial situation and employment on life satisfaction. Conclusions: Future research should extend analyses to a wider range of sociodemographic, macroeconomic and geographical variables to gain insight on all possible factors affecting life satisfaction to inform policy makers and ensure higher quality of life, and in turn better mental and physical health. European Parliament - EPRS Policy podcasts

Through its industrial policy, the European Union (EU) has been striving to create conditions conducive to increasing industry growth and competitiveness since 1992. European industry remains a cornerstone of the economy, providing one job out of five and is responsible for the bulk of EU exports and investment in research and innovation. Today, the aim of EU policy is to enable a successful transformation towards a digital, knowledge-based, decarbonised and more circular industry in Europe. To reach this goal, the EU supports, coordinates or supplements Member State level policies and actions, mainly in the areas of research and innovation, SMEs and digital technologies. In a recent Eurobarometer poll conducted for the European Parliament, more than half of EU citizens expressed support for increased EU action on industrial policy. Despite this, it is still the least understood policy area covered in the poll. Since 2014, efforts have been made in a number of areas, including investment (mainly through the European Fund for Strategic Investment, which supports industrial modernisation); digitalisation (for example setting up a number of research partnerships, or a growing network of digital innovation hubs); financing (making it easier for industry and SMEs to access public markets and attract venture funds); greener industry (for example through the revised 2030 emission targets, or measures on clean mobility); standardisation (bringing together relevant stakeholders to collectively develop and update European standards); and skills (mobilising key stakeholders to close the skills gap and providing an adequate workforce for modern industry). The European Parliament has called for ambitious policies in many of these areas. In the future, EU spending on key areas relevant to industrial policy is expected to rise moderately. The European Commission proposes to boost the share of EU spending on research, SMEs and key infrastructure, although not as much as Parliament has requested. In the coming years, policies are likely to focus on fairer global competition, stimulating innovation, building digital capacities and increasing the sustainability of European industry.https://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/en/document.html?reference=EPRS_BRI(2018)630309 Source: © European Union - EP

Since the early 1990s, immigration has been a more important source of population increase in the EU than the natural change due to births and deaths, while in recent years Europe is facing a large inflow of refugees. At the same time, Eurobarometer opinion surveys reveal that immigration tops the list of challenges that EU citizens are most concerned about and therefore effective policies toward immigration are more important now than ever. How serious are Europe’s immigration challenges? What are the best experiences in integrating immigrants? What hurdles complicate the financial inclusion of refugees? What’s the impact of immigration on European labour markets, the economy and public finances? How effective is Europe’s response to the large inflow of refugees and how to best address the challenges of immigration?
