Today we're talking about something that impacts all of us - our calling and how we can pursue meaningful work without burning out. I'm sitting down with Arianna Molloy, author of "Healthy Calling," to unpack what it really means to live out our purpose without getting crushed by pressure and expectations. We'll explore some critical questions: What does calling really look like? How do we recognize our unique gifts? And most importantly, how can we stay passionate about our work without losing ourselves in the process? Whether you're a pastor feeling overwhelmed, a professional struggling with workplace stress, or someone trying to figure out your next career move, this conversation offers practical wisdom about finding purpose and maintaining your energy. Arianna brings incredible insights from her research and personal journey that will help you reframe how you think about work, calling, and your own potential. So join us as we discover how we can live out our calling without burning out. Arianna is a Communication professor at Biola University, where she designs and teaches Organizational Communication courses. She has also partnered with Biola's Office of Faculty Advancement, leading the Pedagogy Development Consulting program. Her research focuses on meaningful work, work as a calling, and the link between humility and burnout, with publications in premier journals such as the International Journal of Business Communication and Communication Studies. One of her collaborations won “Article of the Year” in the Journal of Management, Spirituality, and Religion. She views her role as a professor through the lens of being a mentor who loves to learn. While she's been honored with awards like Biola's Provost Award for “Excellence in Teaching” and the “Faculty Excellence” award, her deepest joy comes from witnessing the transformation in her students' lives.Arianna's Book:Healthy CallingArianna's Recommendations:Liturgy of the OrdinaryPracticing the WaySubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. In this compelling conversation, Alan sits down with Dr. Arianna Anderson, author of the new book Healthy Calling: From Toxic Burnout to Sustainable Work. Arianna combines academic research, personal story, and spiritual wisdom to expose the surprising dark side of calling. Josh Luckens interviews Dr. Kevin Gannon, who shares how he finds spaces of possibility to question the status quo in higher education, working alongside his students to build a more just and sustainable future. He discusses ways to stop inequities from reproducing themselves in the classroom, how he has moved from focusing on the product to the process of learning, and why he leads with compassion as an educator, helping students discover their own unique pathways to meaningful and authentic learning.Dr. Gannon posits that the better we can answer the following questions, the better the teaching and learning experiences that we design will be:How do I give students permission to take risks and fall short, knowing that a “failure” isn't the end of the process, but a necessary step towards learning and mastery? How will I get students connected with one another and myself in relationships built on mutual trust and shared purpose? How can I not take things personally, but instead lead with curiosity and meet my students where they actually are?How is everyone in this teaching and learning space acknowledging and meeting everyone else as fully and authentically human? How do I remain committed to a better future and act every day from that place?Dr. Kevin Gannon is the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence and Professor of History at Queens University. When COVID-19 caused schools to keep students of all grades at home, those arguably most disadvantaged by this were musicians. Many barriers stood in the way of getting students back in the music room: aerosolization from instruments and voice, close proximity between students, secretions from brass instruments, and antiquated ventilation systems in thousands of school buildings. Early projections indicated that musicians would not get back in the room for 2 YEARS! Well, that didn't happen, and our guests are a huge reason why. Over the years, the United States has worked with many different international partners. Some of these partnerships have grown out of a shared sense of values and understanding of the world. Other partnerships have been merely for a narrow set of strategic goals, while ignoring the challenges these partners have posed. Turkey, particularly in the past ten or so years, has challenged the US's ability to balance these competing forces, as Erdogan has worked tirelessly to make as many people question their reliability as a partner, while doing just enough to remind people of their geopolitical importance. With their latest gambit to hold the NATO alliance hostage for their own gain, Turkey has raised objections to the expansion of the alliance to include Sweden and Finland. What is behind their stated concerns? Are they simply looking to leverage this crisis for their own personal gain? Can they be counted on as a reliable partner, or would it be better to cut them loose at this point? We explore these questions, and more, with Dr. Melinda Negron Gonzales, Chair of the Department of Security Studies at the University of New Hampshire Manchester and our resident Turkey expert. Dr. Negrón-Gonzales has taught at UNH since fall 2008 and teaches courses on global studies and comparative politics. She is the Chair of the Department of Security Studies and the Founding Program Director of the Global Conflict and Human Security master's program. Her research covers social movements and civil society, counter-terrorism and human rights, international norms that promote human security (especially the responsibility to protect/R2P), and Turkish and Middle East politics. Her latest research explores the tension between counter-terrorism and human rights and analyzes the ways civil society organizations in Turkey have attempted to promote human rights and hold state officials accountable for gross human rights violations during armed conflict.Dr. Negrón-Gonzales was a Fulbright Scholar (Turkey, 2006-7). When Mark Spede took over at Clemson in 2002, the Tigers' marching band consisted of 160 members. Now the number is 356, and the football team's six straight trips to the College Football Playoff (and two national titles) gave Spede a trove of stories to share from criss-crossing the country with his large traveling party. He remembers trying to control his emotions in January of 2017 in Tampa immediately after Hunter Renfrow cradled Deshaun Watson's pass in the end zone. It normally takes three seconds for the band to crank up Tiger Rag after a touchdown. This time it took 17 seconds for him to get himself and everyone else under control. As the president of the College Band Directors National Association, Spede found himself with no choice but to dive head-first into the science of a pandemic in March of 2020 after everything shut down and the entire performing-arts world faced existential questions. He helped spearhead the International Performing Arts Aerosol study, which ended up pioneering the path to marching bands at the college and high school level reconvening and playing safely. Spede's leadership and research drew so much attention in the early days of the pandemic that he was receiving 400 to 500 emails a day from not just the United States but abroad. And he said he answered every one of them. Dr. Spede is Professor, Director of Bands, Director of Tiger Band, and Conductor of the Symphonic Band at Clemson University, where he administrates the band program (symphonic, athletic, and jazz bands). He is the recipient of the Clemson University 2009 Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching (College of Architecture, Arts, and Humanities), and three Clemson University Board of Trustees Awards for Faculty Excellence (2008, 2009, and 2012). He teaches a number of courses, including two for the Calhoun Honors College: aesthetics of music and science of music. In 2012, he conducted the Clemson University Symphonic Band at venues in London, England, for the Summer Olympic Games. Also in 2012, he founded the Clemson Faculty Jazz Quintet, for which he plays drums. Spede earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan (1984), and Master of Music from Ball State University (1988), and a Doctor of Musical Arts from The University of Texas at Austin (1998).

Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Professor Timothy Zick, of William and Mary Law School, to discuss his recent book, The First Amendment in the Trump Era. Aaron and Tim are talking about Democracy, our Constitution, the Press, and the law of the First Amendment – what it is and what it isn’t.   Are facts still facts? Can we find truth in today’s world? Tim and Aaron address these concerns as they talk about the President’s dramatic, and unique, relationship with the press and his continuous attacks on the media. More than any other modern president, Trump has openly challenged fundamental First Amendment norms and principles relating to free speech and free press. Aaron and Tim break this down throughout the episode and Tim explains that this was one of his main motivations for writing the book. The two discuss Trump’s ability to control the news cycle, Nixon’s “Enemy List,” the pentagon papers, whistleblower protections, and delve deep into various other controversies, the “Twitter case,” alternative facts, as well as whether or not Trump is undermining the press and creating dangerous normalizations.   The First Amendment in the Trump Era catalogs and analyzes the various First Amendment conflicts that have occurred during the Trump presidency. It places these conflicts in historical context – as part of our current digitized and polarized era but also as part of a broader narrative concerning attacks on free speech and press. Tim argues that we must understand what is familiar about Trump’s presidency in terms of the First Amendment but also what is distinctive.     A graduate of Georgetown Law, Tim specializes in Constitutional Law, the 14th Amendment, the First Amendment and Federalism, with teaching interests in the First Amendment, Law and Religion, Constitutional Law, and Constitutional Theory. Following law school, Professor Zick was an associate with the law firms of Williams and Connolly in Washington, D.C., where he assisted in the defense of congressional term limits in the Supreme Court of the United States, and Foley Hoag in Boston. He served as a law clerk to the Honorable Levin H. Campbell of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and as a Trial Attorney in the Federal Programs Branch of the United States Department of Justice. While at the D.O.J., Professor Zick defended the constitutionality and legality of a variety of federal programs and statutes.   Professor Zick has been a frequent commentator in local, national, and international media regarding public protests and other First Amendment concerns. He testified before Congress on the Occupy Wall Street protests and rights of free speech, assembly, and petition and has been the recipient of the Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence in 2011, 2013 and 2017.   To learn more about Professor Timothy Zick, please visit his bio page here.
