Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon (LTTS) welcomed a flying visit from a 400,000 piece Lego 'Leap' Aircraft Engine, which was showcased to employees, family members and students from the local area today. An incredible piece of structural Lego engineering of intricate detail and accuracy, the fully working model weighs almost half a tonne and took six months to complete. Coming in at 60% of actual size and complete with its own security, the Lufthansa Lego Aircraft Engine is modelled on a Leap, a type of engine (CFM Leap-1B & -1A engines) used in the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320NEO aircraft. Making its Irish debut, the Lego model was the brainchild of a Lufthansa Technik employee in Germany. With Lego a multi-generational kit that appeals to people of all ages, Pat Foley, CEO of LTTS commented that its visit to Shannon provided an opportunity for young people from schools in the region to visit the LTTS site to understand the type of work undertaken by the company, offering them a chance to explore the opportunities that might be open to them in the future. "In Ireland we are expanding year-on-year and hope we can encourage some of these fantastic young people to be the next generation of apprentices, mechanics, engineers, maintenance and HR professionals at LTTS," he said. LTTS specialises in the repair of components for aircraft engine turbines and has been operating in the Shannon region for more than 30 years.

In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things across the 5G ecosystem, we review key 5G ecosystem developments including T-Mobile's $4.4 billion acquisition of UScellular's wireless operations, NVIDIA kicking P5G tires, AI-RAN Alliance considerations, and what Fortinet's cybersecurity portfolio brings to wireless/mobility environments. Our analytical review drilled down on: T-Mobile Acquires UScellular Wireless Operations: Good News for Rural Users. T-Mobile will pay approximately $4.4 billion for the assets being acquired from UScellular in the transaction that combines cash and up to $2.0 billion in debt to be assumed by T-Mobile. Upon closing, T-Mobile's 5G network will expand to serve UScellular customers, especially those in underserved rural areas, by moving from a roaming experience outside of the UScellular coverage areas to nationwide access. We explore why the additional capacity and coverage generated by the combination of T-Mobile/UScellular spectrum and wireless assets and capabilities can stimulate competition for wireless services across rural areas, particularly in relation to Verizon and AT&T service offerings as well as help reduce the digital divide.  Private 5G Momentum: NVIDIA Kicks Tires and AI Considerations. NVIDIA received approval from the FCC to build a private 5G SA network at its Santa Clara, CA HQ to test its implementation with unnamed O-RAN vendors. The move follows high-profile organizations such as Tesla, John Deere, Lufthansa Technik, and NEC elevating their respective private 5G (P5G) commitments as P5G installations worldwide have passed the 2K threshold. We delve into the recent progress in the P5G market and how NVIDIA's interest in P5G coincides with its 5G ecosystem initiatives including as a major backer of the AI-RAN Alliance and the development of the Grace Hopper chip to support new AI applications at the edge plus in RAN software.  Fortinet Brings Secure by Design Assurance to Wireless. Fortinet recently spotlighted its long-standing commitment to responsible radical transparency as an early signer of the Secure by Design pledge developed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). CISA's latest initiative strongly aligns to Fortinet's existing product development processes already based on Secure by Design and Secure by Default principles. Fortinet is committed to adhering to robust product security scrutiny at all stages of the product development lifecycle, helping to ensure that security is designed into each product from inception all the way through to end of life, which we view as an important differentiator. We examine how the Fortinet platform combines unified SASE, security operations, and secure networking that protect the entire attack surface alongside integration ease with existing infrastructure plus our key takeaways from Fortinet's Mobility Field Day 11 presentations.

This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to help manufacturers remove bottlenecks with smart suggestions. My guest is Rafi Wadan, Co-Founder and CEO Stargazr. Rafi started his career as a Financial Controller at Beiersdorf and Lufthansa Technik in Germany and US. He then finished his PhD Degree on the topic "Impact of Digitization and AI on Controlling and FP&A" In this period, he built a proven track record in turnaround situations. Rafi has a deep understanding of KPIs and how to cascade them throughout an organization. He's a strategic thinker who is able to see the big picture and develop creative solutions to complex problems. During his career, he experienced how hard it is to find accurate answers to financial controlling questions such as why the company is losing money, or what could be the year-end profit. Using Excel and heavy ERP tools was sometimes a nightmare. To provide timely and accurate information to stakeholders, he and his co-founder built themselves software that equipped management with the correct answers in real-time and the company made a turnaround. Stargazr was born. Stargazr is on a mission to help manufacturing companies' profitability by removing gut feelings and providing forward-looking insights and intelligent recommendations.  And this inspired me, and hence I invited Rafi to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way manufacturing companies make decisions. Rafi shares his lessons learned on creating predictable traction in the highly competitive category of FP&A. He tells stories about how niching down helped scale faster and help deliver remarkable results in a matter of 30 days. Last but not least, he elaborates on how they can constantly raise the bar and get ahead of the market.  Here's one of his quotes We like to call our tool a data-driven employee. That was always the way I was seeing Stargazer and trying to build it. However, I knew that the prescriptive part was a super complex approach. For us was clear we, first of all, need a framework for that. But we also use a customer advisory board to ensure that this whole model with the prescriptive analytics works. Our customers did a 30-day POC, and the result was awesome. We could see our tool was identifying and recommending solutions how to solve bottlenecks, which were in the six digits in terms of profit.  During this interview, you will learn four things: How verticalization will help to create traction and rapidly grow it What questions to ask in order to understand whether you are on to something with your startup idea How slicing implementation time can give you a major long-term sales advantage What to get right to drive a successful fundraising round For more information about the guest from this week: Rafi Wadan Website Stargazr Subscribe to The Daily SaaS Reflection Get my free, 1 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news. China is to speed up the drafting of the nuclear safety law and atomic energy law. The State Council Information Office has issued a white paper on the country's nuclear emergency preparedness. The document says that since China started to build its first nuclear power plant in 1985, the country has made fast progress in legislation connected with nuclear emergency response. China adopted a regulation on the emergency management of nuclear accidents in 1993, the first in this area, and then the law on prevention and control of radioactive pollution. The law on emergency response covered nuclear accidents. The state security law, revised in July, reinforced regulation on nuclear emergencies. Over the years, China has also set up a nuclear emergency management system with a clear division of duty among the central government, provincial governments and nuclear power plants. At the national level, the National Nuclear Accident Emergency Coordination Committee is made up of both civilian departments and the military and has a general office in charge of regular work. Accordingly, governments of provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities where nuclear power plants are located, set up nuclear emergency coordination departments and took charge of emergency response within their jurisdiction. The central government has drawn up a national contingency plan while provincial governments and all nuclear power plants issued their own plans. This is NEWS Plus Special English. One of China's poorest provinces is planning a poverty-alleviation campaign for 2016 that will include vocational training, developing better farmland, and relocating people from the most disadvantaged villages. How to lift more residents out of poverty was the hot topic at Southwest China's Guizhou Province's "two sessions", the meetings of the local legislature and political advisory body which were held recently. The province will invest 18 billion yuan, roughly 2.7 billion U.S. dollars, this year to relocate 300,000 people from 3,200 impoverished villages. The government will help 100,000 people develop more fertile farmland, offer vocational training to more than 300,000 young rural adults, and recruit 10,000 people skilled in traditional local crafts to promote art forms and ensure their survival. The provincial government also promised that it will construct or expand 200 village kindergartens and 200 rural boarding schools in 2016, recruit more teachers, offer subsidies to poor students, and expand medical coverage for serious diseases. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Lufthansa has signed a deal with Chinese drone manufacturer DJI as part of its plans to exploit the growing market for commercial drones for tasks including inspecting aircraft surfaces and monitoring wind farms. The German airline said that in this way, it plans to offer those interested in using drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, a "one-stop UAV-shop", from aircraft operation to data analysis, insurance and even pilot training. Lufthansa Aerial Services, part of the company's consulting division, says it will use China-based DJI's aerial platforms and develop applications and technology for potential customers. For example, it sees potential in operating drones equipped with thermal-imaging systems that can be used to inspect infrastructure including solar farms, railroad lines, crops and building sites. Lufthansa says it has already carried out a pilot project with a wind turbine manufacturer to inspect wind turbine blades using drones, while its sister company Lufthansa Technik has used drones to inspect the outer surfaces of aircraft for defects. Lufthansa runs maintenance and catering divisions alongside its traditional airline business. It said last year it wanted to use its experience in pilot training, flying and maintenance to enter the field of commercial drones. This is NEWS Plus Special English. (全文见周六微信。)
