Tom Bodrovics hosts both Bob Thompson from Raymond James and Larry McDonald, creator of the Bear Traps Report, for a discussion on inflation trends in the G7 economies. They emphasize the unprecedented $16 trillion debt increase since 2008 due to fiscal and monetary responses to crises, which has led to significant inflationary pressures, particularly in energy costs. They argue that the market's response is putting pressure on long-term bonds and the US currency, potentially requiring a hard asset tie for stability. They also discuss the implications of a strong US dollar for Trump's economic goals, with some factions favoring a weaker dollar. A strong dollar negatively affects U.S. manufacturing exports, hurts companies with sales outside the United States, and forces the Fed to buy bonds, potentially leading to inflation and an economy weakening. Central banks are increasing their gold purchases and shifting away from US treasuries due to sanctions and mistrust in the US government, which could negatively impact the dollar's strength. Gold stocks have underperformed the S&P 500, but may offer asymmetrical returns as interest rates remain low and inflation normalizes at a higher level. They discuss historical gold investing regimes and the transition back towards the one where real rates are favorable for gold. They emphasize the importance of recognizing trends, being ahead of the power curve, and investing accordingly. The possibility of the Federal Reserve's inflation target shifting towards 3% is discussed, which could benefit certain investment portfolios in sectors like industrial, metals, materials, oil, and gas. Utilize external resources for guidance on Secure 2.0 and retirement income planning.Offering a retirement income solution helps participants manage longevity risk, increase potential spending, reduce volatility, retain assets, and lower recordkeeping fees while providing a pension-like experience without the downsides of a defined benefit plan.Present retirement income solutions during plan proposals to win business and educate plan sponsors on guaranteed income options.Implement a repeatable, documented process to evaluate retirement income solutions efficiently, provide a framework for plan fiduciaries to prudently select appropriate options tailored to plan demographics, and document the analysis for fiduciary files.“Number one, you can hedge longevity risk. Number two, it can increase potential spending for a retiree so it gives them an extra layer of confidence as they approach and enter those retirement years. And then lastly, it reduces volatility, giving participants peace of mind as they near and enter retirement, to know what they have is going to be there.” - Kelby Meyers Connect with Kelby Meyers and Josh Anderson:Website: https://www.mynestimate.com/ Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information and content of this podcast is general in nature and is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. Middle-class finance, akin to checkers, involves straight forward moves focused on saving and long-term stock market appreciation with minimal debt, aiming for stability. Wealthy finance, akin to chess, entails strategic leveraging of investments for cash flow, utilizing debt and the stock market as reserves for loans. While the middle class plays a simpler game of accumulating assets for security, the wealthy play a strategic game, leveraging assets to generate active income streams and allowing for greater financial growth and risk management. Tom welcomes back Senior Portfolio Manager Bob Thompson to the program. Bob discusses the risks associated with the mining industry in light of a potential downturn. He explains that the lack of capital investment in mining, energy, and manufacturing means that the work done today won't result in supply for a decade, so any tapering of the Fed's policies will result in commodity price spikes due to the lack of available supply. Bob cautions that recession talk often hides underlying structural problems and affects commodities like oil that are heavily reliant on the economy, as well as gold which tends to do the best when the Fed reduces interest rates. Generalist funds have around zero percent of their money in gold, and there is potential for tens of billions of dollars to enter the sector as gold outperforms the S&P. Small sectors like metals and uranium are likely to benefit from increased capital, as exploration and development have been neglected. Bob believes that gold, silver, and uranium all have great opportunities ahead of them and that investors should look for companies with the lowest all-in sustaining cost, as their profits will increase with any rise in price. Tom welcomes a new guest, Bob Thompson, to the program. Bob is Senior Portfolio Manager at Thompson Investment Partners of Raymond James Ltd. Bob discusses the importance of having a good macro view on the mining sector. Resources are very cyclical, and the times when people are most positive is the time of maximum risk. He sees a tremendous similarity between now and markets of the late 90s. The S&P either needs to go down a lot or gold needs to rise significantly. It seems likely they will meet somewhere in the middle. Input costs squeeze most companies, and this is why resource companies do better for a period. Bull markets tend to end a speculative blow-off. Afterwards, there is usually a different sector that takes the lead. We seem to be at the beginning of a new run in commodities, and perhaps we will have a decade long-run. He doesn't believe that tightening by the Fed will curb inflation because the Fed can't raise rates to a meaningful level. Bob quotes Alexander Tytler, a Scottish Historian, "A democracy can't exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result that democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy." The west has been living beyond its means, and creating more money, this eventually stops working. The system can't support our wants indefinitely, even if everyone wants their promised piece of the unfunded liability pie. Bob outlines each hour of his 'The Mining Clock' which can determine where we are in the cycle. The access to credit is what makes the great discoveries possible. He likes to consider investing in any market that has moved down eighty percent. ESG is providing an opportunity for investors that understand how negatively it is affecting energy markets. It's denying of capital investment into the sector. Energy demand is fairly stable, but supply is shrinking. In assessments that show women to be less financially literate than men, is that gap due to a lack of knowledge or a lack of confidence? One recent study revealed that women tend to disproportionately respond “do not know” to questions measuring financial knowledge, but when this response is unavailable, the gap closes substantially. In this episode, Mark tells the story of Monique Currie—a highly successful basketball player in college and the WNBA. Despite all her talent and achievements, Currie has noted how women basketball players tend to be less confident than their male counterparts. Lacking confidence when it comes to complex tasks, such as investing in a diversified portfolio or mapping out a financial plan, can seem intimidating to anyone of any gender, but are there strategies that can help you overcome some forms of underconfidence? Mark speaks with Laura McDowell, a regional director at Schwab. Laura is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, a Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA), and an Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF). They discuss changing demographics, why some people suffer from impostor syndrome, and how to empower the next generation of women investors. You can read more about the study that shows women are often more knowledgeable in financial matters than they think in this working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research. It has certainly been a crazy start to the year when it comes to the market. In this episode of
In the real estate industry, we always need to be aware of leveling up our financial situation. In this episode, Rich Arzaga joins Monica to talk about all things financial wellness. Rich shares information about licensing, credentials, and how financial planners get paid, as well as some things to look out for when choosing a financial planner. They also discuss different investment platforms and insurance options. This episode is packed full of great information for any REALTOR®, whether you already have a financial plan or are just getting started. The title “financial advisor” is a broad term — not everyone you hear about being a financial advisor has the same license or credentials. If you are seeking out a financial planner for your financial situation, make sure you look for someone who is licensed and credentialed. These people are licensed in giving advice or offering different investment options. Rich shares some of the different license numbers, and what goes into being able to earn each license. To find the right financial planner for you, ask the questions about what licenses they have and what that means, as well as what credentials they hold. The CFP® (CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM Practitioner) designation is going to easily set financial planners apart from one another. Financial planners get paid in a few different ways. When you pay a fee for service, the financial planner is creating a plan for you, but not managing the money or offering insurance products. As you get to a higher level of need, many advisors fall off and you may need to find a different advisor who is certified to handle more advanced planning like taxes, stocks, investment real estate, etc. A more advanced advisor can help to mediate conversations between other professionals that handle specific aspects of financial planning. Beyond financial planning, there is asset management. These advisors get paid either on commission or a fee. In addition to license and area of expertise, some other things Rich recommends when trying to find the right financial advisor is chemistry — you want to be able to build trust and make a connection with them. If you're paying someone, you want to trust that you can follow the advice they give you, much like a trusted REALTOR®! Another thing to consider is the company; some companies are very formulaic. Because everyone's situation is different, it's hard to put people in a formula that is true to their intentions. If you're able to work with an independent advisor, that will give you a better shot at more individualized planning. A frustration for REALTORS® can be that some financial planners don't specialize in investment real estate, and aren't sure how to treat directly-held real estate. Rich became a financial advisor because he was passionate about real estate and now teaches financial planners how to help clients with their real estate questions. If you're looking for someone who can help with real estate, look for an advisor who specializes in cash-flow-based planning. Cash-flow-based planners can integrate directly-held real estate to be part of your financial plan. There are several independent investment opportunities as well. About 17% of the population are self-investors. Rich talks about some of the different platforms available for anyone who wants to dip their toe in the water of investment. Platforms like Robinhood, Schwab, TDAmeritrade, and Fidelity all offer something a little different for whatever level of investment you are at. It's never too early or too late to start investing, and we are fortunate to have many options! Rich shares some new information around health care that has come about from the American Rescue Act. Regarding life insurance, don't be afraid to explore this, especially if you have people depending on you. Term life insurance will do for most and there is more flexibility in companies, but if you are going to do cash value, do your research to make sure the company is strong. Some other insurance options are long-term care and disability insurance. As people get older, one of the biggest risks they face in the balance of their financial life is the need for long-term care and the expense that comes with that. Rich shares some calculations based on the trends for long-term care, the overview of the risk for the family. Disability insurance is quite pricey, but the question for every REALTOR® to ask themselves is if you became disabled today, would you be short in your financial plan or would you be okay? As you are shopping for disability insurance, get as long as your plan requires, or you need; if you can't afford that due to cost, give yourself at least two years to be able to get your situation under control. The NAR's Center for Financial Wellness is a great program and resource for financial literacy for REALTORS®. The nice thing about this resource is that it is industry-specific, not just general financial planning. It's also free! Tweetables: “You may grow out of your partner that you're with if you're growing your net worth and your situation is more complex. You're going to need someone with a little more depth.” — Rich “Finding somebody that you can trust is really very important, otherwise people who don't have that chemistry maybe don't take that advice.” — Rich “That's how you get the help. Find somebody that's a CFP®, who does financial planning, that uses cash-flow-based technology.” — Rich Guest Links: rich@cornerstonewmi.com view my website!
