Horror history gets weird, reflective, and dangerously snackable this week as This Week in Horror History travels through June 8–14 with mischievous monsters, haunted hotels, supernatural comedy, demonic hauntings, creepy mirrors, and one killer dessert that may be eating America alive. This episode digs into a packed week of classic horror movies, cult horror sequels, supernatural blockbusters, 1980s horror, haunted-house horror, and strange consumer-satire body horror, including the release of Gremlins, the same-day arrival of Ghostbusters, the wider theatrical expansion of The Shining, the hit sequel The Conjuring 2, and the mirror-filled nightmare of Poltergeist III.Inside this episode:• Gremlins turns one cute little mogwai into small-town monster chaos and helps push Hollywood toward the PG-13 rating.• Ghostbusters brings haunted libraries, demonic possession, rooftop apocalypse, and paranormal exterminators into one of the biggest supernatural comedy franchises ever.• The Shining expands wider in U.S. theaters, pulling more audiences into Stanley Kubrick's cold, hypnotic nightmare inside the Overlook Hotel.• The Conjuring 2 sends Ed and Lorraine Warren to the Enfield haunting and introduces one of modern horror's most memorable demonic figures.• The Deep-Cut Spotlight goes to Poltergeist III, the strange 1988 sequel that traps Carol Anne inside a haunted Chicago high-rise full of mirrors, elevators, cold hallways, and unfinished supernatural business.Plus: a horror birthday roll featuring Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman, Jurgen Prochnow, and Adrienne Barbeau, a creepy look at how horror sneaks into family homes, hotels, corporate towers, grocery aisles, and blockbuster comedy, and a weekly recommendation for Larry Cohen's weird, gross, and sharply satirical cult classic The Stuff. From mogwai mayhem and ghost exterminators to haunted reflections, demonic forces, the Overlook Hotel, and a mysterious dessert that might be consuming its customers from the inside out, this week proves horror can invade almost anything: your home, your hotel room, your movie theater, your refrigerator, and your appetite.

Geekscapists! Let's talk COMICS! Our good friends David Booher and Winston Gambro arrive on the podcast this week to talk about their current indie comic 'Malloch the Damned'! Along the way, David talks about some of the other books he writes (like Ghostbusters, Dungeons & Dragons, Canto, and more!), and Winston discusses working on a million projects at once (including Geekscape's own books)! Obviously, while we're geeking out, we'll be discussing the video games we're playing, how good Spider-Man Noir is, what movies we're looking forward to this summer, and LOTS MORE! It's a classic Geekscape, so don't miss it! Support 'Malloch the Damned' 1 & 2 on Kickstarter! Who's hungry? Jess gives her take on Obsession (and Mickey forgets the name of the movie Milk + Serial), Mickey rants about his recent 4k buying craze, and they both talk the Canadian cannibal film Cannibal Girls from 1973 directed by future Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman.
They say there ain't no cure for the summertime blues, but we here at F2F disagree. So allow Trev & Chris to make a house-call, as we ring in a brand new series - "JUNE is What the Doctor Ordered," taking a look at three doctor-themed (sorta) movies. First up, the 1983 oddity Doctor Detroit, perhaps most remembered as SNL legend Dan Aykroyd's first (and last?) solo starring role in a movie. Aykroyd plays a nebbish college professor forced to pose as a tough-talking pimp in order to protect four beautiful sex workers from the wrath of an evil crime boss named "Mom." And if that premise already sounds pretty out-there to you, well, we haven't even said anything about the costuming, voice, and mannerism choices Aykroyd makes in regards to his "Doctor Detroit" persona. Why exactly did a movie starring a beloved comic icon, released so close to hits like Trading Places and Ghostbusters, not connect with audiences? We're here to diagnose what might have gone wrong. Brim and Mr. Greer are back at it again. Apart from all the usual shenanigans, the gang chats about everything in pop culture with all the trimmings including Universal Studios ditching the Lost Continent, Jaws and Ghostbusters potentially returning to Universal, and the underground Disney Props Black Market documentary. They discuss the indoor theme park being built in Atlanta, Georgia, Killer Klowns Monster High dolls coming soon, and Matthew Lillard tagged for Plastic Man. The crew also chats about where Luke Skywalker's lightsaber came from, the random and now iconic sound at the beginning of The Police's Roxanne, and how for a fee – you can stay overnight at the place where Harry Potter was filmed. The cast talks about Anthrax's new music, and the game Operation Epic Furious: Strait to Hell. They talk about Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano on Netflix, Undertaker being ranked as the best wrestler of all time, and Stephen Colbert's final week being the end of Late Night era of television. The crew chats about entertainment news, opinions and other cool stuff and things. Enjoy.Wherever you listen to podcasts & www.thegrindhouseradio.comhttps://linktr.ee/thegrindhouseradio
From Ghostbusters to Will & Grace, One Day at a Time to Jurassic Park, the past decade has seen Hollywood reach a new peak in its obsession with reboots, remakes, and revivals. Spearheaded by media giants like Disney and Netflix, these projects promise progress—more diverse casts, “timely” social commentary, and redemptive nostalgia—yet they often reproduce the very inequalities they claim to address.Rebooting Inequality: Critical Takes on Film and Television Remakes (NYU Press, 2026) brings together twelve concise, theoretically rich essays that interrogate how Hollywood's recycling of intellectual property sustains entrenched systems of racial, gender, and sexual inequality. Across genres and platforms, contributors explore how the industry's nostalgic return to familiar stories masks an ongoing reliance on white, patriarchal, and heteronormative frameworks of storytelling and production.Blending critical race, feminist, and media studies, the collection analyzes dozens of recent film and television revivals, remakes, and reboots from Roseanne to Charlie's Angels to ask what it means when entertainment markets strive for diversity while leaving the structures of inequality intact.Accessible yet deeply analytical, Rebooting Inequality exposes how nostalgia has become both a marketing strategy and a political tool, revealing how the “new” Hollywood continues to reanimate the past—profitably, repeatedly, and unequally. Craig Carton and Chris McMonigle spiral into an all-time movie debate on The Carton Show after talking Knicks, bats flying around houses during playoff games, and kids bringing Yankees hats to school. Craig unloads on legendary sequels like Ghostbusters 2, Jaws 2, Ace Ventura 2, Back to the Future 2, and even Die Hard With a Vengeance while the rest of the studio calls his movie opinions completely insane.

What happens when a video game stops playing by the rules? Doug and returning guest Noah (Gunchpot) go deep on the most creative, bizarre, and genuinely brilliant video game mechanics ever designed — from games that fake-crash your console to math games that secretly turn into space jail simulators. Games covered include Shenmue (the 1999 Dreamcast game that made boredom part of the experience by giving you an actual forklift job), Seaman (raise a fish with a human face that insults you, narrated by Leonard Nimoy), Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (the GameCube horror game that fake-deleted your save file and muted your TV on purpose), Metal Gear Solid (Psycho Mantis reads your memory card and comments on your other games), Facade (a 2005 AI couples therapy simulator where typing the word "melon" gets you thrown out of the apartment), Frog Fractions (a browser math game that secretly turns into a completely different game — then hid its sequel inside an entirely separate game for years), Doki Doki Literature Club (the anime dating sim that deletes characters from your hard drive as part of its horror), Disco Elysium (where your skills literally argue with you and you can fail a check just trying to get out of bed), and WarioWare (five-second micro games with one-word instructions and zero hand-holding). Plus: QWOP, Baby Steps, Superhot VR, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, I Am Bread, and more. Before all that: Noah is working through 800 of 1,000 movies on his Letterboxd watchlist, watched Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park for the first time this year, and is deep in the David Lynch rabbit hole. Doug's dog Bruno had a very eventful Mother's Day morning involving a rabbit, a shovel, and a crow. Then it's time for The Verdict — the Letterboxd review guessing game. This round covers The Mummy, Devil Wears Prada 2, Nosferatu, Longlegs, Conclave, Barbie, Glass Onion, and Andor. This week's recommendations: Noah: Casino Royale. One of the best action films ever made, full stop. Doug: Potion Seller's debut album Buzzard is out now. Go listen. Brainsynthesizer.com for merch and physical copies. We talk to Claire & Anthony Bueno - Filmmakers & Creators of 'Cleanin' Up The Town : Remembering Ghostbusters'. A behind the scenes deep dive and pure, true love letter to one of their generations greatest films. We chat about the passion and drive it took to tackle such a huge undertaking and the rewards such a project brings. Who was the mysterious Queen of the Lakes said to rule the waters of north Wales? How did one Pembrokeshire woman armed with only a pitchfork help defeat French invaders? And did Welsh folklore really tell of women strong enough to wrestle grown men, fight invading armies, and become giants? In this episode of the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast, we explore a trio of larger-than-life Welsh women whose stories tow a fine line between fact and fiction, history and folklore. There's Jemima Fawr, the legendary heroine of Fishguard, who reportedly captured French soldiers during the last invasion of mainland Britain. There's Megan Ferch Evan - hunter, fisherwoman, musician, boat builder, blacksmith, wrestler, and all-round local legend - whose reputation became so extraordinary she was remembered as the Queen of the Lakes. And then things become stranger still… Victorian writers also tell of a travelling Welsh giantess who vanished to Texas with her much smaller husband. Press play for the full story! Expect Welsh folklore, giants, warrior women, myths, invasions, and some truly *ahem* giant characters. Tune in now… if you dare!

Answer our 2026 Audience Census! "I wasn't an Imagineer because of the dollar. It's because I wanted to do something marvelous for people to enjoy." Captain Eo. Ghostbusters. Men in Black. Team America. Star Tours. The Muppet Movie. If you've ever fallen in love with puppeted characters that felt impossibly alive, there's a good chance Terri Hardin worked on them. A master puppeteer, creature builder, and performer, Terri has spent decades blurring the line between imagination and reality, helping bring some of the most iconic characters in film, television, and the Disney Parks to life. Thanks to the success and beloved characters of Jim Henson, puppets and fantastical characters were having a huge moment in the 80s and 90s. Studios depended on practical effects and humans to create and bring to life characters such as Stay Puft, the giant Marshmallow Man and Zuul, the Temple Dog in Ghostbusters, both of which Terri helped animate. Terri has such an impressive list of productions she's worked on that her bio below is a 22 page document full of references to beloved films and characters. We've also linked to some videos of her work below in the Resources section. Terri also worked as a sculptor and Imagineer at Walt Disney for many years. She is brimming with incredible stories about all the people she's worked with including Michael Jackson, Dan Aykroyd and Jim Henson, and Michael Eisner. Terri talks to us about how she prepared herself so that when any opportunity came, she was ready. I especially loved her story about how she created the Dragon's Lair attraction at Disneyland Paris. Terri is an absolutely remarkable character herself, and she had both me and David laughing through the entire interview. Beneath it all, Terry is a passionate artist who breathes life into all her creations. Whether you're a film buff, a Disney fan, a maker, or just someone who loves a good behind-the-scenes story, this conversation pulls back the curtain on puppetry as a craft. You'll never look at puppetry the same way again. In this episode, I chat with creature effects artist, puppeteer and digital pioneer Craig Caton-Largent about a career that arguably traces the entire arc of modern visual effects — from foam latex and animatronics to motion control, performance capture and full CG animation. Craig talks about growing up on a sheep and cattle ranch in Washington State, being captivated by the 1960s Batman TV show and then Planet of the Apes, and teaching himself prosthetics from Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook. After tracking down Dick Smith's address in Who's Who in America, he wrote a letter that led to a year of mentorship over cassette tapes and ultimately introductions to Rick Baker, Stan Winston and Tom Burman. We get into his first job on Charles Band's Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, working on the Olympic alien for the 1984 closing ceremonies, sculpting barnacles on Cocoon, building Spock's seamless silicone ears on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, undulating menacingly under shaving cream on Larry Cohen's The Stuff, and puppeteering Slimer's mouth on the original Ghostbusters. A big part of the conversation focuses on Jurassic Park, including the design evolution of the T-Rex, the helicopter convention moment that led to the McFadden motion base, the logistics of moving the full-size animatronic across the San Fernando Valley at night, and Craig's work as the Raptor puppeteer, including the now-legendary "head tilt" at the kitchen window that earned an on-set "It's like Alien, I love it" from Spielberg. We also talk about Craig's twenty-year stint as the caretaker, or "doctor", to the original ET puppet, including the time the LAPD turned up at his garage door thinking he was running a crack lab while he was actually repainting ET. Plus the story of how Stan Winston handing him a couple of SGI machines led, almost overnight, to him becoming one of the eight co-founders of Digital Domain alongside James Cameron and Scott Ross. Later in the conversation we move into Craig's animation career as a final layout artist and character TD at DreamWorks and Disney, with credits on Tangled, Rise of the Guardians, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Turbo, and stories from working with Guillermo del Toro at DreamWorks. We finish on Craig's current role as Creative Director of the 3D Animation and Visual Effects department at the New York Film Academy in Burbank. John and Craig welcome back Katie Dippold (Widow's Bay, Ghostbusters) to ask, what advice would you give to your younger self? They revisit the writers they used to be, offer specific guidance to each one, and demystify everything from "Why isn't a producer calling me back?" to "Should I join that sorority?" Most importantly, we look at how Katie turned her former writing sample into the hilarious and spooky new show, Widow's Bay. We also answer listener questions on calling out stolen ideas and how to pitch yourself when your past work doesn't line up with your voice. In our bonus segment for premium members, with the rise of AI, will there still be be movies and TV shows in ten or twenty years? Our best guesses lie just behind the paywall.
