When an employee unexpectedly quits, an investor backs out, or a big customer churns— fear of failure takes over. When you close a new round, land a big customer, or make a big hire— you feel pure excitement. Every founder is on a fear-excitement spectrum. There's no way to prevent yourself from feeling the two extremes. But I've seen great founders use several tactics to help themselves operate out of excitement more often than out of fear. Those founders also feel fear— but they use these tactics to spend more time closer to excitement. Because operating out of failure is playing not to lose—whereas operating out of excitement is playing to win. Here are 3 ways to do just that. Why you should listenHow to use multiple plans to operate more freely and objectivelyWhy runway and low burn are the keys to lower founder stressWhy working with the right investors is more important than raising big roundsWhat Tobi Lutke (founder of Shopify) did to change his employees' mindsets Keywordsfounders, fear, fear of failure, excitement, validation, runway, partners, mindset, expectationsSend me a message to let me know what you think!

Thought leaders often find themselves entangled in the webs of negativity, especially in our digitally interconnected age. In a conversation that's as illuminating as it is uplifting, Anthony Iannarino, author of "The Negativity Fast," joins Phil Gerbyshak to dissect the essence of negativity and offer potent solutions for personal growth. This podcast is a respite for anyone—speakers, trainers, coaches, consultants, facilitators, and authors—who is feeling stressed or overwhelmed by the surging tide of negativity.Key Takeaways:1. The Power of a 'Negativity Fast':Anthony Iannarino kicked off the conversation by stressing the importance of a "negativity fast." This essentially means stepping away from negative stimuli like news and politics to focus on personal growth. This was inspired by one of his less-than-pleasant life experiences—putting stucco on houses, which turned out to be one of the worst pieces of advice he'd ever received. Despite such challenges, he decided to use his trials as a platform to build positivity.2. Empathy as an Antidote to Negative Emotions:Reflecting on his background and development in comedy, Iannarino advocates the transformative power of empathy. By using his life experiences, he helps others navigate their challenges. The key takeaway here is that empathy is not just an emotional balm but a critical tool for thought leaders to connect with and guide others.3. Letting Go of the Need for External Validation:In a profound exchange with Phil, Iannarino discusses the reality that most people are not as concerned with us as we might think. This realization can be incredibly liberating, allowing us to focus more on our own growth and less on what others might think. He also stressed the importance of daily writing to maintain authenticity and to crystallize one's own thoughts and beliefs.4. Gratitude as a Lifestyle:Both speakers delved into the science-backed benefits of gratitude, which include lowered blood pressure and increased cognitive functioning. Iannarino also noted the mental wellness benefits of limiting social media exposure, which can be a significant source of negativity and stress. They advocate for teaching social media literacy to middle schoolers and stress the importance of face-to-face human interactions.5. Solving Instead of Complaining:The final leg of the podcast was a hard-hitting discussion on the dangers of complaining. From damaging personal relationships to promoting a negative mindset, complaining does more harm than good. Instead, Iannarino promotes a "solution-oriented" approach. This change in mindset not only eliminates negativity but also propels us towards creative problem-solving.Next steps and conclusion:In a world that is often overrun with negativity, the podcast offers a beacon of positivity and actionable advice. Whether it is the power of taking a "negativity fast," the freedom that comes from releasing the need for external validation, or the simple yet profound impact of saying "thank you," this podcast is a must-listen for any thought leader looking to make an impact in a meaningful way.So, if you're looking to reshape your perspective and reignite your passion, it might be time to hit that pre-order button for Anthony Iannarino's upcoming book, "The Negativity Fast" at The Sales Blog. Because let's face it, the world could use a bit more positivity, and so could you.  ★ Support this podcast ★ This is a public episode. How to Reduce Fear in Relation to Our Problems This week we are chatting about how to manage fear in relation to our problems. The first step is to explain the concept of Association and Disassociation as I use this in the technique I teach you later in the episode. When it comes to managing our emotions, one powerful tool we have at our disposal is the ability to disassociate or associate into the pictures we hold in our minds. Disassociation refers to the process of separating ourselves from the images in our heads that are causing us distress. By doing this, we can distance ourselves from the negative emotions associated with those pictures, which in turn can help to diminish the intensity of those feelings. For example, if you have a traumatic memory that continues to cause you anxiety or fear, disassociating from that memory by visualising yourself as a detached observer, rather than as the person experiencing the trauma, can help to reduce the emotional impact of the memory. On the other hand, association refers to the process of connecting ourselves to the thoughts, images, and memories that make us feel good. By doing this, we can strengthen the positive emotions associated with those pictures, which in turn can help to increase the intensity of those feelings. For example, if you have a happy memory that makes you feel good, associating with that memory by visualizing yourself as the person experiencing the happy event, rather than as a detached observer, can help to amplify the positive feelings associated with the memory. It is important to note that both disassociation and association are normal and natural processes that occur in the mind. However, when used intentionally and skilfully, they can be powerful tools for managing our emotions and improving our overall well-being. The "Problem, Not the Person" technique is a technique I developed that uses association and disassociation to help individuals separate their problems from their sense of self. The technique is based on the idea that when we have a problem, it can be easy to become absorbed in it and start to identify ourselves with it. This can lead to negative thoughts and emotions such as self-doubt, guilt, and shame. The "Problem, Not the Person" technique helps to separate the problem from the person by teaching individuals to disassociate from their problems as this reduces the fear related to the problem. Next the person can see that the size of the problem is smaller than they thought in relation to the vastness of space where their problem doesn't exist in. When we have achieved this we can search for solutions to the problem in that space outside the problem or ‘the not problem'. Solutions only exist outside the problem and in the history of mankind there have been thousands if not millions of people who have found solutions to your problem. As well as that we have access to so many answers by using the internet so there is a very high chance that we can all find solutions to most if not all of our problems. Knowing this further reduces the fear related to any problems. To use this technique, individuals are first asked to identify a problem that they are facing. Next, they are asked to think about the problem as if it were a separate entity from themselves and to move it out in front of them. Once the problem is imagined as separate from the self, the person is then disassociated from looking at the problem from a distance. As they do this, they can start to notice the problem's characteristics, such as its size, shape etc. By disassociating from the problem, they can start to see it as something that can be managed or solved, rather than something that defines who they are. After disassociating from the problem and the fear is reduced it is easier to then investigate where the solutions exist which is in the not problem. Then we recognise the solution and decide what action we are going to take to solve the problem. On this episode I am speaking about Fear and this is the first of four episodes relating to many aspects of fear and how to manage it. It is important have a definition of fear before we look at how to manage it and for the purposes of this podcast I am using the dictionary definition which is ‘fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or ham'. Fear is not all bad and it is good to acknowledge the benefits of fear in measured amounts when it is being used by us to warn us of danger whether that danger is physical or emotional. Fear is trigged in our bodies as a physical feeling and all of us are capable of feeling. It can be very debilitating when it is out of control and the good news is that we can control it. We experience fear when we are in danger or when there is a perceived threat. How that feeling gets created is when we perceive danger based on what we are seeing either in our environment or in our thoughts and we then have a chemical, hormonal and neurological response namely the Fight, Flight or Freeze response, all of which are uncomfortable but warn us and allow us to prepare physiologically to stay and fight, run or freeze or play dead. When we understand the mechanism of this we can see how the feeling of fear moves from one cell to another creating a sense of movement of the feeling in a particular direction. When we become aware of this, that's the first step in being able to manage or reduce the intensity of the fear. By intentionally imagining the fear feeling moving in the opposite direction, we are able to confuse the neural pathway which in turn reduces the fear feeling and I walk you through how to do that in the video or recording on this page. It is a good idea to measure the intensity of the feeling first so that you can measure the improvement in the reduction of the intensity of the fear feeling. Using this technique I have guided thousands of clients to reduce fears which were at an intensity of ten on a scale of one to ten, down to a zero. This is a little hack that you can have in your back pocket in times where you think you are going to feel fearful or anxious eg speaking at a meeting, interview, driving test, giving a presentation etc. I hope you take advantage of it and enjoy. “Release your ego from the outcome,” says Olympian Ben Askren.     This episode of the Spartan Up Combat Series is hosted by Joe De Sena and Colonel Nye, as they talk with Ben about reducing fear, the ego and how to live with no regrets. In this episode, you'll learn...   -The value of hard work: Ben only took off 7 days during his entire high school career -Ego and the impact on stress -How to become unstoppable by creating a niche -Planning vs following a plan and when to adhere to each -Three actions you can take to reduce performance-related fear   About Ben Ben Askren grew up in Hartland, Wisconson. He was introduced to wrestling age six by his father but didn't take the sport seriously until joining a wrestling club in fifth grade. From there, Ben's love for the sport and success within it hit new levels.   Ben reached high school and dominated his weight class at a state level.   In 2002, he joined the University of Missouri, a team that had just claimed it's first NCAA Big 12 title (thanks to future friend and fellow MMA fighter Tyron Woodley). Here Ben would help the program reach new levels. His NCAA career consisted of a 157-8 overall record. His final two years were dominant with an 87-0 record capped by back-to-back national championships (2006 & 2007). Ben was a four-time all-American, and two-time recipient of the Dan Hodge Trophy (the college wrestling equivalent of the Heisman).   His next big accomplishment was defeating the national runner-up Tyrone Lewis at the US Olympic Trials in Las Vegas to secure a spot on the 2008 US Olympic Team. In Beijing, Ben competed in the 74 kg. weight class, where he would open his first match with a win via pin. Ben was eliminated in the following round with a loss to Cuba's Ivan Fundora.   Follow Ben on Twitter, Instagram and his website -@BenAskren -BenAskren.Com SPONSOR This episode of Spartan Up! is brought to you by Eurofins.  Go to EmpowerDXLab.Com/Spartan and use the code ‘Spartan' for 15% savings.   This episode of Spartan Up! is brought to you by Orgain.  New subscribers save 30% at Orgain.Com/Pages/Spartan.  SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpShow YouTube: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpYT Google Play: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpPlay   FOLLOW US: Spartan Combat: https://www.instagram.com/spartancombat/ Spartan Up on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/spartanuppodcast/ Spartan Up on Twitter https://twitter.com/SpartanUpPod   Find out more at https://spartancombat.com/ © 2021 Spartan

Brian Mayer talks about fear and worry especially in our children in the wake of a crisis at home or in society.  In light of the virus that is spreading around the world and the resulting school cancellations, it can put uncertainty in the minds of our children.  Let's talk today about 5 ways that you can help them feel better in the midst of chaos.  We hope you enjoy today's message.  For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies The definition of fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that something is dangerous and is likely to cause pain.” The definition of worry is “allowing one's mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.”  The definition of panic is “sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behavior.”  At the time of this podcast publishing, there is a lot of fear, worry, and panic regarding a virus that is spreading around the world.  This virus is considered what they call “novel” or new.  This means that people have yet to build any kind of immune response to.  As a result it can take longer for the body to fight it off which means it has more time to spread.  Schools have been cancelling classes for 2 or more weeks.  Kids of course might love the idea of being out of school for a couple of weeks especially if they get that time around the week of spring break meaning they could be looking at 3 weeks off.  But the reason that they are out of school might scare them.  Especially with today's social media and internet information can spread like wildfire.  Some of it is true and some of it is not. Let's face it social media applications like Facebook has everyone talking right now about this virus and what to do about it.  It looks like a phrase called “social distancing” is become part of out language.  Social distancing means to limit interactions with others and stay a certain distance from others.    You might be scared about all of this, but chances are you may have one or several kids in the family that are very worried about getting really sick or even dying from this virus because it is being talked about so much.  So what in the world should we do to help our kids especially during this time?  I have 5 different ways you can help your bio kids or stepkids navigate this unknown to them a little easier.  Here are those 5 ways:  Normalize their feelings.  Normalize just means to help them understand that it is okay to feel scared and that lots of people do.  You can even tell them that from time to time you are scared about things too.  Of course you want to stay strong for them but help them know that they are not alone.  Pray with them.  We serve a powerful yet loving God.  It is my belief that this virus is not from him nor is he “allowing” this because he is unhappy in any way with us.  Let them know that there are a lot of things that are out of our control but that we should turn over our worry to the one that controls it all.  This is another way you can help them know they are not alone.  Read the Bible with them.  In particular, pick our passages that discuss fear and worry and what we should do instead.  Encourage them to memorize them and replace fearful thoughts with these truths.  Here are some of my favorites.  “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.  Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.  Consider the birds: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?  Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” Luke 12:22-26 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Phillipians 4:6-7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Reassure them.  Let them know that they will always have you to talk through their feelings and to know that what is going for them is important to you.  This can especially helpful for stepkids who can automatically feel like you really don't care nor are interested in them like your own bio kids.  Help Others.  Involve your kids in looking for people who are less fortunate or maybe even the elderly who have to be extremely careful about getting out during this time.  If you know of a neighbor in need ask your kids to help check in on them and even go to the grocery store to get them items they might need.  This can often take your child's mind off of their own worry and anxiety.  This time of great fear is certainly an opportunity for great learning and teaching, but also connecting and comfort to take place as well.  Please take care of yourself and each other during this time and let's pray that this valley we are in comes to end soon.  Resources: None Mentioned Thanks For Listening!
