Political science is centrally concerned with understanding how politics works. It's a discipline of the present tense, and the bulk of our research focuses on gathering evidence in the here and now. But sometimes political scientists also dig into the past. From time to time, you'll even find one of us trawling through the records in a dusty archive. We are discussing one particular ongoing example of historical research in political science - at prisoner-of-war camps in the UK in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. We are joined by:Zeynep Bulutgil,Professor in International Relations. Title:  Beloved and Debated, French Bulldog Becomes  Top US BreedSource: US News and World Report (US News)https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/new-york/articles/2023-03-15/beloved-and-debated-french-bulldog-becomes-top-us-dog-breedDate: 03/15/2023Summary The French bulldog (FB) is the Top Breed in the United States. Situation:According to the AKC, the FB is now the favorite dog breed in the U.S.  Because they are the more prevalent purebred dog last year. The Labrador Retriever held the top spot for the last 31 yearsThe US News took an interesting angle in reporting this story. They wanted to frame it as an argument between pro-FB and con-FB people. (creating division)  Their actual first sentence is a run-on, but the first part says, “Adorable in some eyes, deplorable in others,(a bunch of adjectives) the FB became the nation's most prevalent purebred dog last year,”  They talk about why people like or dislike the breedLike Comical Funny LovingSmallDislike MedicalBreathingSpinal Eyes Skin conditions The article talks about countries that urge or forbid people from purchasing that breed. British Veterinary Association urges people not to buy “Flat-faced breeds. The Netherlands prohibits breeding very short-snouted dogs and the country's agriculture minister aims to outlaw owning those breeds.  ProblemThese dogs have problems.Owners need to research breeders and health testing and recognize that problems can be expensive to treatEven with genetic shortcomings, these dogs can be active. They can do agility, take hikes, play fetch, and play tug-a-war  They are a bully breedSometimes like conflict Not always good with other dogs- That is true about a lot of breeds, but these dogs seem to have a lower threshold for foolishness. They can bully peopleThey seem to like to charge at people's feet. They are, IMO hard to read.Facial features are difficult to read, and their faces are less expressive IMOBody language is different from most dogs due to structure and temperament. They are bred for looks, not for health. ActionThe AKC's popularity rankings cover about 200 breeds in the nation's oldest canine registry. The stats are based on nearly 716,500 puppies and other dogs newly registered last year — about 1 in every 7 of them a Frenchie. Registration is voluntary. The rankings don't count mixed breeds or, at least for now, Labradoodles, puggles, Morkies, and other popular “designer” hybrids. The AKC's top 10 were: French bulldogs, Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds, poodles, bulldogs, Rottweilers, beagles, dachshunds, and German shorthaired pointers.Last year, about 108,000 newly registered FB surpassed Labs by 21,000A lot of these problems can happen with any breed, and some other breeds have different problems that are rare with FBs. But any dog can get sickHip dysplasia Cancer The American Veterinary Medical Association is exploring ways to improve flat-faced breeds.Reseach what goes into owning any breed. Websites are not best for researching breeds. They  tend to harp on the good qualities while remaining silent about many of the bad qualities, including temperaments that may be more likely in a particular breed. IMO it is best to connect with someone that works with dogs. They see a lot of dogs and are more likely to articulate the drawbacks of many breeds. ResultPeople will continue to breed these dogs. They are popular, and the money is too good. Closing Where you can find us at https://www.facebook.com/peopleswolfpodhttps://www.instagram.com/thepeopleswolfpodcast/peopleswolfpod@gmail.comMusic Produced by: WaresdannyIG: @waresdanny, Website: https://waresdanny.bandzoogle.com/home

She is completing her Ph.D. at Southern Cross university evaluating the Aware Parenting approach, focusing on playful discipline. She has recently had the first part of her research published in the Journal of Child and Family Behaviour Therapy titled “Parents' Experiences of a Brief Online Parenting Program with Playful Discipline”. In the episode, Kate outlines this first research study on the effectiveness of the Aware Parenting approach and why she felt called to undertake research. She describes the contents of the training that was offered to parents as part of this study and her key findings. She explains how her research has found that short parent training programs on Playful Discipline are effective to support parents to be the parent they want to be, to understand that behaviour is a sign of unmet needs or unreleased feelings and to give parents effective strategies to respond to challenging behaviour in the form of special time, power-reversal games and loving limits. Kate describes the next stages of her Ph.D. and the need for additional evidence in the scientific literature to increase the mainstream acceptance of the Aware Parenting approach. She also talks about what she has learnt from parenting this way herself, including letting go of “perfect” in parenting and the importance of finding ways to meet our needs as mothers. To find out more about Kate, follow her on Instagram at Katesurfs or email her kate.baltrotsky@scu.edu.au Her research article can be found here https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07317107.2022.2084596 The free Facebook group we mention is accessible here https://www.facebook.com/groups/484995275036830

We live in a time where scientists now recognize the vital importance of intestinal health, not just for the gastrointestinal health but also how it affects many aspects of the entire body. There is a strong link between poor gut health and how it negatively affects brain health. This strong gut-brain connection has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. "Leaky gut has become a common term that tries to explain intestinal permeability that was never meant to allow toxins back into the body. Reseach has now shown that this leaking of toxins that were meant to be elimated by bowel movements can wreak havoc on the body if it recirculates into the blood stream. Many symptoms can now be contributed to leaky gut theory by the inflammation the body produces to fight off these unwanted toxins. We now know that poor digestive problems are not the only problems someone will suffer if they do not take care of their intestinal health, other problmes range from depresion, anxiety and even auto immune disorders to name just some of the consequences to not taking care of your gut health. Tune in to how you can make sure your childs gut health stays in top shape so they don't have to suffer.

Summary Motivational speakers encourage us to find our purpose in life - our why. But leaders are better off focusing on creating meaningful work.   Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 99 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we bring research to life in your leadership. This week we explore how to create meaningful work. Motivational speakers often encourage us to find our purpose in life - our why. If we know why we do what we do, then the things we do become more important and meaningful.  Thankfully, as leaders, we don’t need to help our people to uncover their purpose in life. We do, however, have a significant role to play in creating meaningful work. While meaningful work isn’t quite the same as a life purpose, it is still a significant part of a meaningful life for many. Reseach which I’ve included in the show notes demonstrates that meaningful work links strongly to work engagement, commitment and job satisfaction. In addition there are weaker links to life satisfaction, life meaning, general health and intentions to stay at a workplace. If I provide meaningful work, I’m providing significance. There’s an appreciation that the work really matters. Now, clearly, there are some parts of our work that aren’t wrapped up in deeper meaning. Thankfully research shows that our sense of meaning in work is made up of the various episodes and elements of our work. As humans, we effectively weigh up the various parts to determine, on balance, whether our work has meaning. In fact, the overall sense of meaning makes the meaningless activities tolerable. I will put up with the meaningless parts of my work if the meaning bank account balance is in credit. To build meaning we can help our people to answer these questions about their work: Why does it matter? What does it contribute to? How does it contribute?  Five whys is great technique to use to explore meaningful work. We covered it in more detail in episode 20. It helps us to take our focus further up the meaning chain. Let me share an example. I used to manage a team, and part of their role was packing boxes with materials that would be used on leadership programs - all the handouts, materials and everything else that would be needed on that program. They would then send the box to the venue. Now, that job sounds pretty boring and devoid of meaning. So it prompts me to ask five ‘why’ questions. Packing boxes with materials - why does that matter? Packing the boxes allows consultants to run leadership programs. That’s okay, but why does that matter? These leadership programs help increase leadership capability for thousands of leaders. Why does that matter? As those thousands of leaders improve their leadership, it also improves the work lives of tens of thousands of other people. And why does that matter? That increased satisfaction multiplies out to all of their connections, to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Okay - now maybe that was one step too far, and perhaps we didn’t need the full five whys. But hopefully you can see how using the five whys can help us to create meaningful work for our people. Try it out this week and let me know how you go. Thanks again to Lauren Staveley, our research assistant, who tracked down the research for today’s episode. As a reminder, we are still offering a free 30 day trial of our Leadership Today On-Demand service. It includes two online courses, together with recorded webinars, and quick hits on a range of leadership topics. Just go to the leadership.today website and follow the on-demand link. Summary Video conferencing has rapidly increased in popularity, but the cognitive and attentional load can make it exhausting. In this week’s Leadership Today podcast we look at five ways to stop Zoom killing your focus.    Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 92 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we tackle one of today’s biggest leadership challenges. This week we look at five ways to stop Zoom killing your focus.  Zoom and other video conferencing services have seen a rapid rise in popularity. People have flocked to video conferencing as the next best thing to a face-to-face meeting, particularly when trying to build social connection. During a global pandemic, video conferencing has proven to be a lifesaver for many people forced to work from home. It’s a testament to the quality of Zoom that the brand name is now synonymous with web-based video conferencing. We are becoming increasingly dependent on access to Zoom, as evidenced by a recent outage that disrupted millions of people including online schooling and businesses.  And Zoom isn’t just a back up for when we can’t be face-to-face. Research conducted last year showed Zoom was rated positively for qualitative data collection in health care interviews, coming in ahead of face-to-face, phone and other video conferencing options when they factored efficiency into the equation. Amidst all of that success and celebration there are recurring and largely anecdotal concerns emerging about the impact of video conferencing on our attention and energy levels. People report feeling drained and exhausted at the end of a full day of Zoom calls. It’s too early for there to be specific research about why this might be the case, but the field of attention research gives us some clues to why Zoom is killing our ability to focus. Let’s face it, weird things happen on Zoom calls that would never happen in a ‘real’ meeting. We see people fixing their hair as they stare at themselves. People keep looking away from the camera to a second screen so you end up having a conversation with their ear. People eating anything looks disgusting - seriously, stop eating while using Zoom. We see people talking but no words are coming out - you’re on mute! Surprise people and their pets appear out of nowhere. People keep trying to talk at the same time which leads to a flurry of “no, no, you go first”. As we look behind people it feels like we are in a dozen different rooms at once. And, while we’re talking backgrounds, why not include an even more distracting virtual background? Sure, you’re on a beach, or drifting through space. In a sign of just how confused we are, we even feel the need to wave goodbye at the end of a Zoom call. It’s exhausting. What are the challenges of Zoom calls, or indeed most other video conferencing tools? There are three main issues: Visual distractions. We are not used to seeing ourselves in action, and it’s easy to become fixated, or at least distracted, by how we look. It’s easy for the meeting to then feel like a performance. Simultaneously seeing multiple faces is also strange. We wouldn’t normally have people lined up in a grid like the start of the Brady Bunch, but rather be attending to one or two faces at any point in time. Reseach has repeatedly demonstrated that visual distractions significantly decrease our ability to focus and increase stress. Auditory distractions. The inability for everyone to speak at once is a real issue. The small delays and “loudest person wins” nature of Zoom make auditory processing a challenge. The audio itself is of a higher quality than a typical phone call, but it still feels more draining than a landline phone call due to these artefacts.  You can’t look into someone’s eyes. I might try to fake eye contact by staring at the camera, but then I can’t see you. Thankfully, research demonstrates that people are lousy at figuring out if we’re making eye contact in real life anyway. In fact researchers found that we can’t pick the difference between someone looking into our eyes versus looking predominantly at our mouth. But on Zoom, the distance between the camera and the person’s face is larger than a real human face - the effect of not making eye contact is more pronounced. All of this leads to an increased cognitive and attentional load. We end up suffering from what researchers call continuous partial attention. So Zoom - is it worth it? That largely depends on the work and what you’re trying to achieve. If you’re after interaction, trust and engagement, it’s hard to beat face-to-face. If face-to-face is not possible, Zoom is a great backup. We just need to recognise and manage the risks. In particularly we need to minimise visual distractions - research has show that this leads to a 16% boost in performance for time-sensitive, high focus work, while also reducing stress by 18%. Reducing auditory distractions will also help.  So how do we reduce distractions and the cognitive and attentional load of Zoom calls and meetings. Here are five suggestions: Hide the self view. Check that your video feed looks okay at the start of the call, then use the menu on your own image so you can no longer see yourself. Just keep in mind that others can still see you - there’s a reason webcams have little lights on them to show when you’re on. Search Zoom call fails on YouTube for some great examples. Use the speaker view. Rather than having everyone on screen at once in equal size boxes, shift to just being able to see the speaker. I’ve found this really helps me to focus on one person at a time, rather than trying to attend to a sea of faces. Mute when not speaking. Muting yourself reduces the audio distractions for others. We need to treat a Zoom call like it’s not fully duplex, particularly as group sizes increase. Despite any claims to the contrary, the experience of multiple people trying to speak at once is far more painful on Zoom than in real life.  Make it interactive. In the field of online learning there’s a popular myth that people can’t attend to any video that’s longer than 6 minutes. There doesn’t seem to be much concrete evidence to back that up and, in fact, research shows that you can increase beyond that easily by making the video more interactive. The same principle applies to Zoom calls. Use polls, chat, breakout rooms, annotations, reactions - anything to spice things up and make it less of a presentation. Reduce the length of your meetings. Recognise the cognitive and attentional load by making meetings shorter. As a rule of thumb I reduce the length of Zoom calls by a third to what I would expect people to engage in face-to-face. And if none of that works, hey, here’s a crazy idea - why not try a phone conference call instead? Use a bit of variety and gain ideas and input from your team about how to improve things. Now I’m sure a lot of these technical issues will become smoothed out over time. Someone will figure out how to mount a camera behind a screen to mimic face-to-face, and I’m sure the audio challenges will reduced. Perhaps people will listen back at this episode in 5 years and think - well, how quaint! However, keep in mind the broader principle that focus and distractions are enemies. Anything we can do to reduce visual and auditory distractions at work are going to make a difference, whether it’s online or in an office. What have been your Zoom experiences? Make contact via the Leadership.Today website and let me know. I love a good story. Have a great week.   References Archibald, M. M., Ambagtsheer, R. C., Casey, M. G., & Lawless, M. (2019). Having a mentor provides a wide range of benefits beyond development, including higher pay, more promotions and greater career satisfaction. But asking for a mentor isn’t always easy or the best approach.    Transcript Welcome to episode 18 of the Leadership Today podcast. Today we’re looking at finding a mentor, and why asking someone to be your mentor may not be the best approach. Let’s start by defining mentoring. In a mentoring relationship the focus is on development of the person being mentored in a particular set of skills or capabilities, by engaging with a mentor who has demonstrated experience and expertise in these areas. Sometimes the individuals arrange the mentoring directly with each other, and at other times organisations either support or drive these pairings. Reseach suggests that the benefits of having a mentor go beyond the individual’s development. When compared to those without mentors, those being mentored had higher remuneration, were offered more promotions, and they demonstrated greater career satisfaction and commitment. And mentoring also has benefits for the mentor as well. Mentors report feeling more positive about the organisation and their senior leadership. Mentors also experience greater levels of job satisfaction. Given mentoring is such a win win, why don’t we see more mentoring in the workplace? Here are some reasons: People are often afraid to ask for a mentor - plucking up the courage can be hard, particularly when we recognise it’s such a big commitment from the mentor Mentors are reluctant to commit time - the traditional model of mentoring often soaks up a lot of time, sometimes outliving its original usefulness Mentors may already have someone to mentor - they may therefore be reluctant to commit to a second or third person   So my advice - if you want a mentor, don’t ask for one - at least not straight away. Here’s a process I recommend: Identify the areas you want to develop - be really clear about what mentoring is going to address Identify a range of mentors that could help - it may be more than one person, and you can draw on your networks to suggest people Request brief meetings with the potential mentors of around 20 to 30 minutes each - be clear that you have an area you’re interested in developing, and would like a conversation about their advice and guidance in this area - being willing to use phone or video calls will broaden the potential range of mentors you can access Assuming they’re okay to meet up and the meeting goes well, ask if they would be open to another meeting in two months time Don’t waste their time - turn up prepared with questions, take notes and stop asking for more meetings once you’ve learned what you want to learn   Mentors are great. And, while it sounds counterintuitive, if you really want a mentor, don’t start by asking for one. As always, I’ve included the references used in this podcast in the episode notes.   References Allen TD1, Eby LT, Poteet ML, Lentz E, Lima L. There are two major mistakes businesses make: 1. failure to position correctly and 2. attempting to attract too broad of an audience. “Everyone” is not your audience. Kyle and Pritch break down how to avoid these pitfalls. Positioning is finding the best way for your business to compete with others in the market by finding and aligning your business strengths in a competitive scenario against the areas of weakness for your competition. This gives the advantage to you. Finding your position in the market is a lot of work, but well worth it. Failure to do this work often results in closing up shop. Audience is not defined as “everyone” but only as those most likely to engage your business. It’s not about being “better” it’s about being different. Set yourself apart via differentiation. Only attempt to draw an audience of those who want what you offer, the way you offer it. Be as distinct, direct and different as possible. Let the rest of the potential audience go. Never spend time, money or effort trying to attract the attention of anyone outside the very core of your best, highly targeted audience.
