Die Gegensätze beginnen gleich im Nachtzug von Bukarest nach Chișinău. Im zügigen Tempo durcheilt der Zug Rumänien auf dem Weg zur moldauischen Grenze. Im Bordbistro spielt der Barkeeper mit dem Schaffner ein Brettspiel, die Musik kommt aus einer neuen Bluetooth-Box. Im Abteil steckt das neue Ladegerät von unserem Reporter Valentin Beige in einer recht alten Steckdose. Nicht nur der Nachtzug steckt voller Gegensätze, auch das Land Moldau selbst ist voll von ihnen. Cafés, die von den Preisen und der Machart her auch in Budapest oder Berlin liegen könnten, treffen auf außergewöhnliche Kellerbars. Oder auch die Stadt Chișinău, die mit ihren beiden Gesichtern aufwartet: dem sowjetisch geprägten Teil und der historischen Altstadt mit kleinen Häusern und geschotterten Straßen. Und geschotterte Straßen führen auch quer durch das Land. Unter anderem auf dem Weg in die Region Orheiul Vechi, nach Alt-Orhei. Die Region ist seit der Steinzeit besiedelt und besticht mit beeindruckenden Felsenklöstern, wunderschönen Ausblicken und ganz viel Charme. Und um eines kommt kein Moldau-Besucher herum: Wein. In Moldau dreht sich vieles um Wein. Bis vor wenigen Jahren lieferte das Land viel Wein nach Russland. Seit einem Embargo ändert sich das und Moldau setzt jetzt auf Qualitätsweine. Doch ohne Exporte könnte die moldauische Weinbranche nicht überleben. Valentin Beige ist in den Nachtzug und nach Moldau gereist. Selbst die Grenzkontrollen nachts um drei haben ihn nicht abgehalten. Aber ein Tipp für alle Nachtzugliebhaber: auf der Fahrt von Chișinău nach Bukarest ist die Grenzkontrolle am Abend und danach winkt eine Runde Schlaf in diesem ganz besonderen Nachtzug. So besonders wie das gesamte Land Moldau.

In this episode, Guy talked with Peter Russell, an author, guide, and meditation teacher. He discussed his deep-seated interest in consciousness and the ways in which we can achieve a natural state of contentment. He emphasized the importance of letting go of societal-induced discontent and our attachments to material things. The conversation navigated through topics such as the ego, our emotional responses, and how simple mindfulness practices can transform our perspectives and lives. Peter also explained his motivations and findings in his latest book, 'Letting Go of Nothing,' and gave insights into his daily routines and thoughts on the rapidly changing world. About Peter: Peter Russell is on the faculty of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a fellow of The World Business Academy and The Findhorn Foundation, and an Honorary Member of The Club of Budapest. At Cambridge University (UK), he studied mathematics and theoretical physics. Then, as he became increasingly fascinated by the mysteries of the human mind, he changed to experimental psychology. Pursuing this interest, he traveled to India to study meditation and eastern philosophy, and on his return took up the first research post ever offered in Britain on the psychology of meditation. He also has a postgraduate degree in computer science, and conducted some of the early work on 3-dimensional displays, presaging by some twenty years the advent of virtual reality. In the 1970s, he was one of the first people to introduce human potential seminars into the corporate field, and for twenty years ran programs for senior management on creativity, stress management, personal development, and sustainable development. Clients have included IBM, Apple, Digital, American Express, Barclays Bank, Swedish Telecom, ICI, Shell Oil and British Petroleum. In 1982 he coined the term "Global Brain" with his 1980s bestseller of the same name in which he predicted the Internet and the impact it would have. His latest book, "Letting Go of Nothing: Relax Your Mind and Discover the Wonder of Your True Nature" was published on August 8, 2021. The Satmar Rav, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum, was rescued on the Kastner train. How did this great leader of Hungarian Orthodoxy and chassidic community, who was well known for his vocal opposition to Zionism, receive a place of rescue on the train which was organized by the secular Zionist Aid and Rescue Committee of Budapest? Insights into his inclusion broadens our understanding of how the rescue train story developed. Other famous individuals were rescued on the Kastner train as well. In conclusion it's worth summarizing the entire story of the negotiations with the SS and the rescue train's departure from Budapest, through its stay in Bergen-Belsen. El Telón de acero fue la barrera ideológica, política y física que dividió Europa durante desde el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta 1990. Era mucho más que una metáfora: se materializaba en kilómetros y kilómetros de fronteras fortificadas con alambradas, torres de vigilancia, campos minados y guardias armados. Se extendía desde el océano Ártico hasta el mar Mediterráneo, separando el bloque soviético del occidental. El término fue popularizado por Winston Churchill en un discurso que dio en 1946 en una universidad de Missouri, donde advirtió que un “telón de hierro" había descendido desde Stettin en el Báltico hasta Trieste en el Adriático, sometiendo al control soviético a capitales europeas como Varsovia, Praga y Budapest. Aunque el término ya se usaba antes para describir la frontera rusa tras la revolución de 1917, Churchill lo elevó a símbolo de la guerra fría. Churchill sabía bien de lo que hablaba porque había negociado con Stalin en Yalta y Potsdam, y era consciente de que quería dotarse de un colchón de repúblicas satélite en el este de Europa que sirviesen de primera línea de defensa y de proyección del poder soviético. Con los años el telón propiamente dicho no hizo más que perfeccionarse para evitar las huidas al oeste, que en Alemania llegó a convertirse en un problema de primera magnitud. Entre 1949 y 1961, tres millones de alemanes huyeron de la República Democrática a la República Federal. La frontera intra alemana tenía casi 1.400 kilómetros y a ella se sumaban los 155 kilómetros del muro de Berlín. El muro, levantado en 1961, era un telón de acero en miniatura que atravesaba el centro de la ciudad. Para que la capital se comunicase con el resto de Alemania se crearon corredores aéreos, ferroviarios y de carretera que conectaban Berlín Oeste con la RFA. Los tres estaban bajo estricta vigilancia para prevenir las fugas. Política, económica y socialmente el telón separaba dos mundos. Mientras el oeste prosperaba con democracias liberales y libre mercado, el este se sumía en la pobreza y la opresión. La cultura occidental era también más atractiva y eso erosionaba el control de las autoridades. La televisión y radio del oeste ofrecían información, entretenimiento y abrían una ventana a un mundo diferente que percibían como mucho mejor y más cómodo. Las televisiones alemanas se podían ver en los países fronterizos y EEUU financió una emisora de radio, Radio Europa Libre, que podía sintonizarse en todo el bloque del este. Estas emisiones sorteaban las alambradas, pero no los controles. Los gobiernos del este trataron de impedir que la población viese la televisión occidental, pero terminaron dejándolo por imposible. Cualquier infiltración de otra índole estaba muy vigilada por las agencias de seguridad, algunas muy temidas como la Stasi alemana, la Securitate rumana o el KGB soviético. Todo aquel sistema de control que simbolizaba el telón de acero se vino abajo a partir de 1985 cuando Mijail Gorbachov se hizo con el poder en la URSS. El telón en sí mismo empezó a desmantelarse cuatro años más tarde coincidiendo con la caída del muro de Berlín. En 1991 la Unión Soviética pasó a mejor vida y con ella cualquier rastro que pudiese quedar de esa frontera impenetrable que dividió Europa durante más de cuatro décadas. The team started with energy and enthusiasm, but within a month, something shifted. People stopped showing up for daily stand-ups. Cameras went dark during meetings. Engagement in retrospectives withered. This wasn't just about being distributed—plenty of teams work across time zones successfully. The problem ran deeper. The Scrum Master had a conflict of interest, serving dual roles as both facilitator and engineer. Team members were simultaneously juggling three or four other projects, treating this work as just another item on an impossibly long list. Steve spent a couple of months watching the deterioration before recognizing the root cause: there was no leadership sponsorship or buy-in. Stakeholders weren't invested. The team wasn't actually a team—they were individuals happening to work on the same project. Steve considers this a failure because he couldn't solve it. Sometimes, the absence of organizational support creates an unsolvable puzzle. Without leadership commitment, even the most skilled Scrum Master can't manufacture the conditions for team success.   In this episode, we refer to The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim, a book about organizational culture disguised as a DevOps novel.   Self-reflection Question: Is your team truly dedicated to one mission, or are they a collection of individuals spread across competing priorities? The tense negotiations proceeded over the course of April-June 1944 in Budapest, and went through several stages. Karl Bushby, the British man walking around the world, is almost home. The former paratrooper set off from Chile in 1998. He walked through the Americas, crossed the frozen ocean from Alaska to Russia, and last year became the first person to swim the Caspian Sea between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. These are all huge achievements in their own right but for Bushby they were just sections he had to complete to finish his epic journey. Originally scheduled to finish in 2006, Bushby is now 56 and still going. Geopolitics has played its part, with Russian and Iranian visa rejections some of the main causes of delay. He arrived in Budapest last month and with the English Channel being the only obvious remaining obstacle to navigate, he should be back in Humberside by this time next year. “One of the things we talk about on our team is if everyone is giving 51% or more and never taking more than 49%, your ecosystem is always going to be in balance. We just try to keep an environment where people are waiting for other people to go to the bathroom, giving each other rides, taking turns at the lead, doing the little things. My guest for today's episode is coach Dena Evans of the Peninsula Distance Club, one of the most experienced, influential, and quietly impactful leaders in American distance running. What happened at CIM just doesn't come out of nowhere. It was the product of more than 25 years of coaching spent moving between youth athletes, post-collegiates, pros, and learning how to build something that lasts.Along the way, Coach Evans has worn just about every different hat that this sport has to offer. She was the women's head coach for Team USA at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, she's served on nearly a dozen international team staffs over the past two decades, and she currently sits on the USATF Women's Long Distance Running Committee after years of leadership across track and across country.
