Every once in a while we stumble upon a song that opens up a fascinating world that we have never before visited. Dan Hartman was not just the creator of a memorable guilt-free pleasure from 1984, but an accomplished singer-songwriter-producer who found success in rock with The Edgar Winter Group, in disco as a solo artist, and in soundtrack work throughout the 1980s. It was a thrill to not only dive into "I Can Dream About You," but also to find out how special Dan Hartman was. It's a crime that he's not discussed more in pop music history. RECAST: ( Episode #45) Elton John — “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”September, 1973Elton John's seventh studio release is considered his best by many. The double album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road contains many well known hits including the title track, the Marilyn Monroe-inspired “Candle in the Wind,” and the 11-minute epic “Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.” Elton John initially intended to record this album in Jamaica, but political instability and the upcoming Frazier/Foreman boxing match caused the production to be moved to Chateau d'Herouville in France.Friend of the Show John Lynch returns to help us showcase this monster rock album from 1973.All the Girls Love AliceThis deeper cut in a minor key deals with prostitution and lesbianism. Tempo changes between the verses and chorus with a groovy fuzzy guitar distortion give this track its distinctive sound. Liberty music was originally trying to get John and writer/partner Bernie Taupin to write songs for other artists, but they decided to write it for themselves.Saturday Night's Alright for FightingThis well-known track was inspired by Taupin's experience in local pubs as a lad — it was banned on a number of radio stations because of fears that it would inspire violence. At age 15, Elton John was actually playing in pubs.Goodbye Yellow Brick RoadThe title track hearkens to a simpler childhood time, removed from celebrity and high society. Reginald Kenneth Dwight would change his name to Elton John inspired by two blues players he liked.Grey SealAnother deeper track from the album is driven by piano riffs and interesting key and tempo changes. If you don't understand the lyrics to this song, you're in good company - Elton John doesn't understand the lyrics either!ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Super Friends Theme SongThis staple of Saturday morning cartoons featured DC superheroes...“Meanwhile, back in the Halls of Justice...”STAFF PICKS:Looking Glass - “Jimmy Love Mary-Anne” Wayne brings us the yacht rock this week. If you think this sounds like "Brandy," there's a reason for it. This is their follow-up top-40 hit. Story songs like this were popular in the early '70's.The Edgar Winter Group - “Free Ride” Bruce's staff pick brings the boogie from the debut album from The Edgar Winter Group. Ronnie Montrose and Rick Derringer were also on this album.Jim Croce - “Bad Bad Leroy Brown”Special Guest Host stepping in for Brian, John Lynch introduces another storytelling song with amazing lyrics like, "badder than old King Kong, and meaner than a junkyard dog." Unfortunately, Croce would die in a plane crash in this month.Chicago - “Just You 'n' Me”Rob takes the tempo down with a horn-driven hit. This was the second single released from "Chicago VI." The song was inspired by an argument that trombone player James Pankow had with his girlfriend - shortly thereafter his wife.LAUGH TRACK:Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt Kickers - “Monster Mash”Ahead of Halloween 1973, this song was moving up the charts. Originally released in 1962, the song was re-released in 1973.

What could the 1990 dance hit “Groove Is in the Heart” possibly have to do with video games? It’s kind of a weird story, involving the Sega series Space Channel 5 and — in the context of this episode — diversions into Herbie Hancock and the Edgar Winter Group. The fifth installment of my series on VGM and mainstream pop looks at how Sega imposed a major game over on the cult pulp icon Lady Miss Kier. ALBUM SPOTLIGHT: Elton John — Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” September, 1973 Elton John's seventh studio release is considered his best by many. The double album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road contains many well known hits including the title track, the Marilyn Monroe-inspired “Candle in the Wind,” and the 11-minute epic “Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.” Elton John initially intended to record this album in Jamaica, but political instability and the upcoming Frazier/Foreman boxing match caused the production to be moved to Chateau d'Herouville in France. Friend of the Show John Lynch returns to help us showcase this monster rock album from 1973. All the Girls Love Alice This deeper cut in a minor key deals with prostitution and lesbianism. Tempo changes between the verses and chorus with a groovy fuzzy guitar distortion give this track its distinctive sound. Liberty music was originally trying to get John and writer/partner Bernie Taupin to write songs for other artists, but they decided to write it for themselves. **Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting ** This well-known track was inspired by Taupin's experience in local pubs as a lad — it was banned on a number of radio stations because of fears that it would inspire violence. At age 15, Elton John was actually playing in pubs. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road The title track hearkens to a simpler childhood time, removed from celebrity and high society. Reginald Kenneth Dwight would change his name to Elton John inspired by two blues players he liked. Grey Seal Another deeper track from the album is driven by piano riffs and interesting key and tempo changes. If you don't understand the lyrics to this song, you're in good company - Elton John doesn't understand the lyrics either! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: **Super Friends Theme Song ** This staple of Saturday morning cartoons featured DC superheroes...“Meanwhile, back in the Halls of Justice...” STAFF PICKS: **Looking Glass - “Jimmy Love Mary-Anne” ** Wayne brings us the yacht rock this week. If you think this sounds like "Brandy," there's a reason for it. This is their follow-up top-40 hit. Story songs like this were popular in the early '70's. **The Edgar Winter Group - “Free Ride” ** Bruce's staff pick brings the boogie from the debut album from The Edgar Winter Group. Ronnie Montrose and Rick Derringer were also on this album. Jim Croce - Bad Bad Leroy Brown Special Guest Host stepping in for Brian, John Lynch introduces another storytelling song with amazing lyrics like, "badder than old King Kong, and meaner than a junkyard dog." Unfortunately, Croce would die in a plane crash in this month. Chicago - Just You 'n' Me Rob takes the tempo down with a horn-driven hit. This was the second single released from "Chicago VI." The song was inspired by an argument that trombone player James Pankow had with his girlfriend - shortly thereafter his wife. LAUGH TRACK: **Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt Kickers - Monster Mash ** Ahead of Halloween 1973, this song was moving up the charts. Originally released in 1962, the song was re-released in 1973.
In episode number 25 of The Classic Rock Album-By-Album Podcast, hosts Chris Karson and Lee Bowie go out past their usual court-ordered curfew to spin up a 1972 artifact from rock history. Can they get past the album art and listen to the whole album? And of course the boys are here to determine "Is It a Classic?". In this episode, The Edgar Winter Group's They Only Come Out At Night is put to the test. Do the rock freaks involved have any coherent ideas? Why does Dan Hartman play such a huge role? Will Donna Summer make an appearance? Find out this episode of The Classic Rock Album-By-Album Podcast!
MITCH PERRY has worked with everyone from The Edgar Winter Group, David Lee Roth, The Michael Schenker Group, Quiet Riot/Dubrow, and Talas to Alphonso Johnson, Steeler, Sam Kinison, and Cher. On this episode, Mitch plugs in his weathered, black P-90-loaded Les Paul and jams a lot with me at his home in Southern California. Mitch currently tours with The Sweet, and you can also catch him most Tuesday nights at Ultimate Jam Night (no cover!) at the famed Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. —JUDE GOLD, host, No Guitar Is Safe podcast.
In this episode the Director's Club takes a look at the films of James Whale (with the help of Fresh Perspective's Jeff Broitman). Whale's innovations in camera movement and special effects, set of quirky character actors in supporting roles, and appreciation of the outsiders in society was put to good use in musicals, war films, and courtroom dramas, but never better than when he was making some of the most iconic horror movies in history! 00:00 Pre-film history, "Journey's End" 11:21 "Waterloo Bridge", ("Under the Bridge", Red Hot Chili Peppers 21:18 "Frankenstein", "Impatient Maiden" ("Frankenstein", The Edgar Winter Group) 48:23 "The Old Dark House", "The Kiss Before the Mirror" ("Our House", Madness) 1:11:40 "The Invisible Man" ("I'm Not There", Bob Dylan) 1:29:38 "One More River" ("Find a River", R.E.M.) 1:39:04 "Bride of Frankenstein" ("Be My Wife", David Bowie) 2:09:09 "Remember Last Night?", "The Road Back" ("Dire Wolf" The Grateful Dead) 2:17:41 "Show Boat", "The Road Back" ("Old Man River", Paul Robeson)

Chris & Aaron return this week for a Vinnie Vincent Discussion. With the internet ablaze in excitement for the upcoming Atlanta KISS Expo that will feature the ankh warrior as special guest, the guys thought it would be fun to discuss Vinnie's history. In this long-form discussion your hosts talk about Vinnie's early years. Born into a musical family in Bridgeport, CT; Vincent John Cusano took to the guitar at a very early age. In this Vinnie Vincent Discussion, Chris and Aaron talk about Vinnie's early musical connections including work with Dan Hartman, The Edgar Winter Group, and Treasure. Vinnie's pre-KISS career is an interesting subject. After working with Treasure, Vinnie headed to Los Angeles, where he became a staff songwriter for the hit tv show 'Happy Days.' In this Vinnie Vincent Discussion, Chris and Aaron discuss his time working on the show as well as his work on the spinoff 'Joanie Loves Chachi.' [caption id="attachment_32393" align="alignright" width="300"] Vinnie Vincent Discussion [/caption] An interesting pre-KISS project took place next with Vinnie joining forces with ex-New England members Hirsh Gardner, Jimmy Waldo, and Gary Shea. The project was called Warrior and had Vinnie not only playing guitar but singing lead vocals. The guys discuss this short-lived, but awesome, project. You can get these tracks in CD form from Cherry Red Records HERE. The guys also discuss Vinnie's time in KISS, adding guitar work and songwriting to 1982's 'Creatures of the Night' as well as 1983's 'Lick it Up.' A lot has been written and speculated about this era of the band. Accounts vary depending on who you ask. In this episode, the guys discuss both sides of the issues. Upon Vinnie's exit from KISS, he got to work building the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. As per usual, this was also a sticky process with numerous differing accounts from members and former members. While the first album was amazing, it was fraught with drama before it was even released. Chris and Aaron discuss the first album, the lead singer situation, and the tracks. The sophomore album from the Invasion, All Systems Go, would be Mark Slaughter's first and the band's last. With a more commercial sound and a toned down look, it appeared the band was poised for breakthrough success. Unfortunately, the band was falling apart by the time the album was released. The guys discuss the greatness of this second album, the drama behind some of it, and give their take on why this band should have been much bigger. The ensuing years after the Invasion split were difficult for Vinnie Vincent. Through different struggles, some good did come from this period; highlighted by his brief songwriting reunion with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for 'Revenge'. These collaborations yielded some great results such as I Just Wanna, Heart of Chrome, and the amazing Unholy. The guys discuss this period of Vinnie's life and career and also touch on the Guitarmageddon/Guitars from Hell sessions that are still unreleased to this day. In the past couple months, a flury of Vinnie Vincent news has gotten fans incredibly excited. The announcement of his appearance at the upcoming Atlanta KISS Expo in January of 2018, has fans from across the globe very excited. Chris and Aaron share in this excitement and discuss what they think is going to happen at the expo as well as theories about what Vinnie may be up to going forward. There have also been a number of Vinnie fans that are Decibel Geek listeners that have asked if Chris and Aaron will be attending the expo. The guys will address that status as well as communications between Chris and the promoter in this episode. It's an exciting time to be a Vinnie Vincent fan. This episode we head to Disney California Adventure to experience Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! The guide map describes the attraction in the following manner: Join Rocket on a thrilling mission to rescue the Guardians of the Galaxy from The Collector’s fortress! Guests must be 40” or taller in order to ride this attraction and FastPasses are available. Before we head out on our rescue mission, here are five fast facts about Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission Breakout! 1. Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission Breakout! opened on May 27, 2017. The attraction is a, somewhat controversial, rethemeing of the park’s Twilight Zone Tower of Terror which opened on May 5, 2004 and closed January 3rd, 2017. Mission Breakout uses the same ride system as the previous attraction but the queue area and storyline of the ride has been completely changed. 2. Mission: Breakout is based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy and stars the original actors from the film. Though the attraction is somewhat linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the story and events of the attraction exist in their own, separate, universe called the Marvel Theme Park Universe. 3. Keeping with the original Tower of Terror, each ride on Mission: Breakout is unique thanks to computer randomization. Also, as guests experience the attraction, they will hear one of six random songs played from character Peter Quill’s walkman. The six song possibilities are "Give Up The Funk" by Parliament, "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf, "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar, “Free Ride" by the Edgar Winter Group and “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley. 4. Throughout the queue area of the attraction there are several Disney Easter Eggs hidden here and there. These include: an invoice from X-S Tech the company behind the old Alien Encounter attraction, a tribute to Gonzo from The Muppets, and Dolores the octopus from the Country Bear Vacation Hoedown. There are also those who say if you look at the Collector’s collection hard enough, you may just spot Figment from Walt Disney World’s EPCOT! 5. In August 2017, it was announced that Mission: Breakout! would receive a halloween themed overlay after sunset during the halloween season at California Adventure. The new overlay is called Guardians of the Galaxy - Monsters After Dark. The ride features a brand new song called Monsters After Dark written by Tyler Bates, who’s scored the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Now let’s help Rocket Raccoon free the rest of the Guardians team! The line was extra long this day so there will be some edits in the audio so you don’t have to wait in real time. After the ride audio I’ll give you my thoughts on the attraction as you’ll be hearing my review moments after riding for the first time. Also, this is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we ride Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout!. As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band’s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. With Mark Stein’s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert’s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell’s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus . Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drumme. In ’76, he joined Rod Stewart’s band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewart’s biggest hits, “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Young Turks.” He left Stewart to record his first solo album, Rockers, and tour Japan and North America with an allstar band. . In the early ‘80s, he toured with OZZY Osborne ,Ted Nugent . In the mid ‘80s, he formed King Kobra. Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record "Momentary Lapse of Reason and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnake’s John Sykes and The Firm’s Tony Franklin. In the early ‘90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group. As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). . In appreciation for his universal appeal, Los Angeles was one of four cities that have had “Carmine Appice Day.” In ’91, he was forever immortalized via his induction in cement to the Hollywood’s Rock Walk (next to his idols, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich).
Who needs lyrics? Not these great hits from the 70s! Discussions include Billy Preston's happy accident, the animated Chuck Mangione, the members of the Edgar Winter Group, and the weirdness of Focus. Join Billy G and Mikey T in the debut episode of The Lava Lamp Lounge!
This amalgamation of commercially successful rock (mainly classic rock) songs is a great mix at any time. For some, it will be a trip down memory lane, for the rest of you, sit back and enjoy. #MusicForAdults@IAMDJDMONEY ON ALL SOCIAL MEDIA.
Welp. That happened. We went to the Sabres game out on Long Island last week, we recorded dipshit #hottakes in the midst of our drunkenness, and then I took my sweet ass time editing it all into a nice little package for you. At least it's short, right guys? If you enjoy those moments when we're the most wretched versions of ourselves, you'll love this one. If you prefer us when we're serious sports analysts, go take a nap while reading Buffalo Wins. Music by the Jambrones, The Edgar Winter Group, The Doors and Eric Clapton.
We return like a giant reptilian monster to wreak vengeance on the statists who would attack our innocent neighbors! Welcome back to Liberty Conspiracy Audios! In this program, we offer you the third in our series of shows about the right to keep and bear arms, and those who set out to attack peaceful people and curtail that right. This time we get to look at the double-standard of pop media figures who strive for the elimination of the Second Amendment (and won't bother to try to amend the Constitution to do it), and we talk about how Wayne laPierre, of the NRA, and his sad but expected collapse on the right to keep and bear arms, and we'll note that there is something wrong with a judicial system that will release criminals into the public but still not trust them with firearms. The Second Amendment doesn't say that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, unless you're a felon who has done his time. If the state doesn't think you're safe enough to be in public with a firearm (and if you're inclined to do more crimes when you get out, you will likely get a firearm regardless of the law), then why is the state releasing you? You're clearly not safe to be in public anyway. That and music by the Blue Oyster Cult "Godzilla"!, The Edgar Winter Group "Frankenstein", The Damned "Thrill Kill", and Grinderman "Bellringer Blues" visit us at www.libertyconspiracy.com! Be Seeing You!
Ugh! I had to replace my "Black Legacy" playlist, originally meant for today's webcast (Sept. 3rd, 2011 2pm - 4pm @ www.killradio.org). Why? After the implosion of last week's CSC ("Beats, Breakbeats, Scratches and Bass"), I found the "Black Legacy" show to be as implosion-possible as the "BBSB" show was. Frakkin' heavy handed DJing if ya' ask me...and now I'm scared that I've lost my playlist-making powers. So fine, let's jump to my "Children's Show" with music that was a part of my youth as well as music made for children from the 40's - 70's. No way to misstep with kiddie music, right?!! Right?!! Answer ME!!! Many tracks played throughout today's show I was happy to find thanks to the magic of the Internet. Perfect examples are all the tracks by the Record Guild of America, Inc., that during the 1940's produced a number of children's music records on 45rpm. I was lucky enough to find them available in .mp3 format along with the original artwork. (Check out the link which proves I'm tellin' the truth). One of the tracks that I was practically raised on was "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group, as it was played (by my brother and I mostly) on my parents' jukebox growing up. Actually it was my Mom's jukebox, an anniversary present my Dad gave to her back in the early 70's. It looks just like the one linked and I just saw a similar one for sale at a vintage clothing store in Echo Park, although someone painted red paint all over what was originally silver metal and stained wood. Also Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Sheherezade was another track that I have my Mom to thank for. I can remember "The Young Prince and the Young Princess" being played while my family and I did housework and yardwork on the weekends. For that reason, this show is very much dedicated, with much love and affection, to my Mom and all the great music that she exposed me to growing up. 1. Al "Jazzbo" Collins - Jack and the Beanstalk 2. The Record Guild of America, Inc. - Old Chisolm Trail 3. Ernest Tomlinson - Domestic Fun (a) 4. Sun Ra and the Blues Project - The Bat Cave 5.
