148: Four-Star General of the U.S. Army George W. Casey Jr. | You're No Better Than Anyone and No One's Better Than You

General George W. Casey Jr. is a four-star general who served as the 36th Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Nominated by President George W. Bush, General Casey led what is possibly the world's largest, and most complex organization--more than one million service members with a $200 billion annual budget. As Chief Executive Officer of the Army, General Casey was a strong advocate for military families, wounded soldiers, and survivors of the fallen, and he also took on the tough issues of suicide and the stigma attached to combat stress. General Casey served 41-years as an American soldier, following graduation from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. In this episode we discuss the following: General Casey's grandpa taught him: You're no better than anyone. And no one's better than you. So, treat everyone with respect. But don't take any guff from anybody. General Casey's father taught him: Never be afraid to try to be the very best. Vince Lombardi taught General Casey: Insist on disciplined execution of the highest standards. The higher General Casey rose in the hierarchy, the more he realized he needed to influence the people outside his organization rather than just look down inside his own organization. The more experienced General Casey got, the more comfortable he got saying, “I don't know.” “Be a man or woman of your word. If you tell someone you're going to do something, you either do it or you tell them why you're not going to do it.” There are only two kinds of plans: those that might work and those that won't work. Family is everything.   Follow Me: X: https://twitter.com/nate_meikle LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natemeikle/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nate_meikle/

General Casey, Former Chief of Staff, U.S. Army joins Mike Shanley to discuss the role of the US military and USAID in US foreign policy. They discuss how organizations that work in peace building and high conflict settings can better understand the military, their perspectives, and how they can most effectively engage with countries that need aid. General Casey describes how he managed military relationships during the Iraq war and what he sees happening with the current wars in Gaza and Ukraine. He provides insight into the shift happening in the global power balance with China trying to take control. Towards the end, General Casey describes how he managed an organization as massive as the US Army. Tune in to hear more about General Casey's views and why the foreign aid budget is critical to maintain.    IN THIS EPISODE: [0:58] Mike shares General Casey's background. [3:07] General Casey explains what the quote “If you cut there, if you don't fully fund the State Department, you need to buy more ammunition” means. [5:13] General Casey shares his thoughts on the foreign aid budget. [7:42] How should defense, diplomacy, and development play roles together? [10:01] General Casey provides 2 examples of how to best coordinate with the military. [17:36] General Casey shares some lessons learned when overseeing reconstruction while conflict is happening and after the conflict has quieted.  [20:56] What is the best way for USAID/NGOs to communicate with the military?  [23:05] How can Gaza and Ukraine be supported now and in the future for reconstruction?  [28:10] General Casey discusses how to approach building trust and gaining insight into what the countries need.  [31:23] What will support mean in the short term and long term for Ukraine?  [37:18] What is General Casey's insight about the 5 senior members of the Russian military being reassigned or arrested?  [41:12] Is there a shift happening right now in the global power balance?  [51:15] How did General Casey manage an organization level as massive as the ones he managed?  [1:00:34] What would General Casey say to politicians that want to cut foreign aid?   QUOTES: [6:17] “And the farmer said that it allowed him to triple his output, and because he could triple his output, he could then afford to send his children to school. In the grand scheme of things, that might seem like a small thing, but it's a huge thing to the people that it impacts.” - General Casey [52:23] “I think that's the bane of every leader's existence today, things are changing so fast that if you try to just keep doing the same thing, it's not going to work and you're not going to get ahead.” - General Casey [59:39] “Vision, courage, character and offensive mindset. That's what I believe it takes to lead effectively in any organization, public or private sector today.” - General Casey   RESOURCES: Supporting Veterans After 50 Years of the All-Volunteer Force and 20 Years of War: Ideas Moving Forward-Book Aid Market Podcast Aid Market Podcast YouTube   BIOGRAPHIES:  General George W. The evening of May 10, 1970, found a young Watt M. Casey Jr. standing awestruck, only a few feet from Jimi Hendrix as the legendary guitarist tore into his unique arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner” on the stage of San Antonio's Hemisphere Arena during the Texas leg of his Cry of Love Tour. Bemoaning the fact that he had no camera to document the amazing experience or the visionary musicians creating it, Watt promised himself that he would make up for his oversight in the weeks and years to come. Little did he realize at the time that Hendrix had less than five  months to live.Casey made good on his resolution, and My Guitar Is a Camera provides the evidence. With a foreword by Steve Miller, this rich visual history of the vibrant live music scene in Austin and beyond during the 1970s and early 1980s allows Casey's lens to reveal both the stage, awash in spotlights and crowd noise, and the more intimate backstage moments, where entertainers hold forth to interviewers and friends. As Outlaw Country's cosmic cowboys mixed with East Coast rockers, Chicago bluesmen, and West Coast hippies, Watt Casey roamed at will, capturing the people, places, and happenings that blended to foster Austin's emerging reputation as “Live Music Capital of the World.”Be sure to follow us @lonestardrygoods and checkout our good friend and fellow Texan, Watt Casey Jr. @wattcaseyjr

http://www.attractionchecklist.com - I think we can, I think we can take a ride on Disneyland's Casey Jr. Circus Train.  Ride audio recorded on May 18, 2021.  Review recorded February 7, 2019 TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we visit Fantasyland in Disneyland to ride Casey Jr. Circus Train.  The Disneyland Resort website describes this attraction saying: Enjoy a whimsical tour through miniature versions of fairytale locales from classic Disney movies. There are no height requirements for this attraction and the Thrill Level describes the attraction as being a slow ride. Before we ride along in the monkey cage, here are five fast facts about Casey Jr Circus Train. 1. Casey Jr Circus Train was a Disneyland opening day attraction opening with the park on July 17, 1955.  However, the ride was closed the next day and remained closed through July 31st, 1955 for safety inspections. 2. Casey Jr. Circus Train takes guests on a tour of Storybook Land at a much quicker pace than the Storybook Land Canal Boats we covered back in episode 33.  Along the way you see several famous sites from Disney films such as Frozen, Peter Pan, Snow White and more. 3. Casey Jr is a two foot (610 mm) narrow gauge internal combustion powered railroad designed by Arrow Development. 4. The sleigh style train cars were part of the King Arthur Carrousel before that attraction was modified to be all horses. 5. Actor Ray Templin provides the voice of the Ringmaster on the attraction. Let's head off to ride the Casy Jr. Circus Train.  Suzie is joining me today and after we ride will give ou our thoughts on this Disneyland Classic.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we ride Disneyland's Casey Jr. Circus Train. It's a beautiful day here at Walt Disney World as we start the morning here in the Magic Kingdom. So much to check out in this podcast and video. We start in the parking lot looking at ongoing transportation issues (could Epcot monorails be returning?) and then on to entering the park using the new facial recognition system. In Town Square we check out changes that have been made to the fire house after Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom has come to an end (and yes, a new interactive experience is underway). Cinderella Castle continues to get layered with a treatment of bunting, spiraling ribbons and baubles of jewels for Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary. We check that out and head right into Fantasyland where touches of gold have also been added to the carousel. Moving on to Storybook Circus we see that Casey Jr. is getting spiffed up, but that's nothing compared to ongoing construction of the new Tron coaster. Additional surprises await as we see the Tomorrowland Peoplemover in motion in hopes (cross your fingers) of an opening within a few days or weeks. In Adventureland we talk about changes underway on the world-famous Jungle Cruise, and some thematic details you may have never noticed at Pirates of the Caribbean. The Rivers of America look tranquil as does Liberty Square but work is being done on Peter Pan's Flight and we take notice that Be Our Guest is not open for breakfast. We finish our tour of Main Street Cinema that has temporarily become the confectionary for Main Street while the corner shop gets a major refurbishment. All this and more on this podcast and YouTube video post. Join us!

DLWeekly Podcast - Disneyland News and Information

This week, Orange County is off the COVID watch list, why this isn’t good news, the lights have returned, Disneyland is ready to open, new mercandise has landed for Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos, we talk about Hollywood Studios, and more! News: The State of California moved Orange County, where Disneyland is located, off the COVID watch list last week. However, this isn’t as meaningful since shortly after, the state came out with a new set of guidelines which moved Orange County to the highest risk level of “widespread”. The new guidelines don’t mention theme parks at all, but the state is working on seperate guidelines for theme parks specifically. No word yet on when that will be released. – https://www.micechat.com/268822-disneyland-update-the-blueprint-for-reopening/ In a bit of a click-bait headline, Walt Disney World News Today posted that the lights are on once again at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, at least at the main entrances. The click bait part of the theadline stated that the parks were lit up in preperation for imminent reopening, which is not the case. It is, however, nice to see the train station and first part of Buena Vista Street lit up again and adds much needed atmosphere to the esplanade for those heading to Downtown Disney. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/08/disneyland-resort-lights-illuminate-anaheim-once-again/ Josh D’Amaro, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products Chairman appeared on “The Dow Report” last week and stated that Disney is “ready” to reopen the parks as soon as guidelines allow. Disneyland and California Adventure have both installed plexiglass safety shields at the entry turnstiles. D’Amaro also went on to talk about the procedures they ahve taken to make sure that the parks are safe and the trust that people have for Disney. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/08/josh-damaro-discusses-disney-parks-reopening-in-new-interview-says-were-ready-to-reopen-disneyland-resort-parks-when-guidelines-permit/ The Tokyo Disney Resort is entering the second stage of reopening this week, and with it may come some clues as to how the Disneyland Resort may handle some circumstances. For example, Tokyo will be running the first parade at any Disney park since COVID-19 started. They also have a new Beauty and the Beast dark ride that is opening, which could show how Avengers Campus might open like in these COVID times. It also gives us a hint at the timelines for nighttime fireworks and other shows coming back in stage 2. – https://www.ocregister.com/2020/09/01/what-tokyo-disney-changes-could-mean-for-disneyland/ The Disneyland Horticulture team is working hard on getting the areas around the resort ready for fall. Signs declaring “We will soon be rolling our the green carpet for our Disneyland guests” have been placed around where the new fall flowers and displays will be planted soon. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/08/photos-landscaping-team-ready-to-roll-out-the-green-carpet-for-fall-flower-displays-at-the-disneyland-resort/ Avengers Campus is chugging right along, and proof of that is from the Disney Auditions website that is looking for stunt performers for Captain America, Black Panther, and Black Widow. The posting is for a live action stunt show in the new land. – https://www.mouseplanet.com/12741/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_August_31__September_6_2020#news5 Disney stage shows and nighttime spectaculars are already some of the most technologically advanced performances anywhere in the world, but Disney is always working on new technology to push the envelope further. A new patent filed by Disney shows a use for drones to control show elements. The patent doesn’t just use the drone itself as an effect, but uses the downdraft from the propellers to make an entirely new effect. As a reminder, just because Disney files a patent for something doesn’t meant that we will see it soon, or ever. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/08/disney-enterprises-files-patent-for-further-use-of-drones-to-control-show-elements/ Even though it has been a couple months since Disneyland turned 65, there is still more new merchandise coming out that celebrates this milestone. A new 65th anniversary sipper featuring Sleeping Beauty Castle has arrived and looks like a snow globe that you can drink from! A special release of pins also arrived that show off some of the classic attractions from Disneyland. There are 13 pins in the collection, each limited to 2,000 and cost $17.99, limited to 2 per guest. The 13 designs are: King Arthur’s Carousel, Dumbo, Mr. Toad, Storybook Land, Peter Pan, Casey Jr., Mark Twain, Autopia, the Disneyland Railroad, Jungle Cruise, Mad Tea Party, Snow White, and the Main Street Cinema. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/08/photos-new-limited-edition-disneyland-resort-65th-anniversary-attraction-pins-featuring-mr-toads-wild-ride-snow-whites-scary-adventures-main-street-cinema-and-more-debut/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/08/photos-new-sleeping-beauty-castle-sipper-debuts-for-disneylands-65th-anniversary/ More new ear headbands have appeared in the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney this week. The new designs are a yellow set that is made of a soft, velvet like fabric, a emerald green set that is covered in sequins with a shiny bow. For Halloween, a Minnie Mouse Witch Ear Headband has been released. The band features black sequin ears, topped with a candy corn inspired witch hat and purple bow. Teresa already purchased this last set of ears that light up and feature Oogie Boogie on them. – https://www.micechat.com/268822-disneyland-update-the-blueprint-for-reopening/ Not only is Halloween coming up, but so is the Dia de los Muertos celebration. This means a whole lot of new Coco mercahndise is hitting the shelves. The crossbody purse that is in the shape and design of Ernesto de la Cruz’s guitar is one of the stand out items. There are also some plush items. We expect there to be more as the celebration nears. – https://www.micechat.com/268822-disneyland-update-the-blueprint-for-reopening/ The Disney Parks blog has posted a video on how to make your own Mickey tie-dye shirt! Stephen, a Walt Disney World Ambassador, had shown off his Mickey tie-dye shirt which is what sparked this how-to video. If you have some time, give it a try! – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/08/disneymagicmoments-how-to-make-a-popular-mickey-tie-dye-shirt-at-home/ With the Song of the South on the way out of the parks, specifically from Splash Mountain, the iconic Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah song has also disappeared from the music loops around the resort. Disney released a statement that “The removal of the song from Downtown Disney’s background music is part of a continuous process to deliver an environment that features stories that are relevant and inclusive.” – https://wdwnt.com/2020/08/disney-issues-statement-regarding-removal-of-splash-mountains-zip-a-dee-doo-dah-from-disneyland-resort-music-loops/ Some keen eyes over at DisneyPlusInformer.com have spotted programming code on Disney+ that points to the addition of a group watch feature that may be coming soon! This feature would allow a group of people to watch the same show or movie at the same time in sync with each other. It appears that the system will also have a chat feature. No word on when it will launch or what platforms outside of the browser that will be supported. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/08/disney-developing-new-group-watch-party-function-coming-soon/ Discussion: Hollywood Studios

The crews also added some artistic tricks to make the castle seem bigger. A painting technique was used that involves painting the lower parts of the 70-foot tall castle walls in darker and warmer hues of pink paint, gradually getting lighter and cooler as it goes up to the top in order to blend in with the atmosphere. My sound naturally makes things sader anyway, but I also knew that I couldn’t make this overtly sad, too! It’s needed to strike that ‘hopes and fears’ balance.”Over 1,000 voices are included in the final track, which he also credited in an Instagram post. (1993–2005)Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln (1965–1973): Theater presentation featuring an Audio-Animatronic Abraham Lincoln, and a replica of a similar attraction at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Elements of the original show were incorporated into later versions of the attraction from 1975–2004 and from 2009–present.The Walt Disney Story (1973–1975): Biographical film about Walt Disney, which originally appeared at Walt Disney World in 1972.The Walt Disney Story featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln (1975–2004: A combination of the two previous shows. Disneyland had been criticized for replacing the Lincoln tribute with a tribute to Walt Disney, and combined elements of the two shows in response. From 2001–2004 the Disney tribute was removed, and the entire show was given more of a focus on the American Civil War.Merlin's Magic Shop (1955–1983): The original magic shop in the park. A second one on Main Street, U.S.A. opened in 1957 and continues to this day. Mickey Mouse Club Theater (1955–1964): Walk-in theater continuously showing animated Disney films and shorts, similar to the Main Street Cinema. Renamed Fantasyland Theater (1964–1982; not to be confused with the present-day theater). Now the site of Pinocchio's Daring Journey.Circarama, U.S.A. (1955–1997), renamed Circle-Vision 360° in 1967: A film presentation showing scenes from around the United States and later China. Guests stood in a large circular room and watched a film projected on nine large, contiguous screens that surrounded them. During its run, the attraction was hosted by American Motors, Bell System, AT&T Corporation, Pacific Southwest Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. Shows were:A Tour of the West (1955–1959)America the Beautiful (1960–1984)"All Because Man Wanted to Fly" (lobby pre-show) (1984–1989)American Journeys (1984–1996)Wonders of China (1984–1996)America the Beautiful (1996–1997)In 1998, the theater became the queue for the short-lived Rocket Rods attraction. The building now houses Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.Skyway to Tomorrowland (1956–1994): This ride, a typical aerial lift ride seen in many parks, traveled from a chalet on the west side of Fantasyland, through the Matterhorn, to a station in Tomorrowland. Cabins hung from cables and ran constantly back and forth between the two lands. The Fantasyland station stood until 2016 – closed to public access – adjacent to the Casey Jr. Circus Train, and was concealed by trees. It was demolished for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge construction. Its support towers were removed and the holes in the Matterhorn through which the ride passed were filled in.Rainbow Caverns Mine Train (1956–1959): A 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge mine train attraction through the new Living Desert. After the scenery was again redone in 1960, it was also upgraded and became:Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland (1960–1977): The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction replaced this sedate train ride with a roller coaster version. The only element that remained in place from its scenic vistas was the mighty waterfall tumbling from Cascade Peak into the Rivers of America, visible only from various boat rides around the Rivers. The structure that formed Cascade Peak and its waterfalls was demolished in 1998 after it was found to be suffering structurally from the decades of water that had flowed over it. One of the four locomotives and two cars from the ride remained on a stretch of track where Cascade peak once stood, as a staged wreck scene. The train, however, was removed in early 2010 during the Rivers of America refurbishment. The cacti that were a part of the Living Desert section were mostly relocated to the Magic Kingdom version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Other remnants from Nature's Wonderland include the tunnel from Bear Country, the buttes from the Living Desert, the tunnel into Rainbow Caverns (though half-buried in concrete), and the jumping fish seen in Bear Country, all visible on Big Thunder Trail. The animals, however, were buried in concrete as the Imagineers didn't know where to place them. The Disney Gallery (1987–2007): A gallery of Disney-related art. The Disney Gallery was the only area listed on Disneyland maps as both an attraction and a retail location. The Gallery sometimes featured preliminary artwork and sketches from certain attractions or movies, sometimes (as in the 100 Mickeys exhibit) the displayed art was associated only with Disney and not with any specific attraction, film, or event. Often, prints from the exhibit were available for purchase via the print-on-demand system, and the Gallery always featured items such as books about Disney artwork. The Gallery used to sell prints of the ride posters featured in the tunnels leading to and from Main Street. The former gallery was replaced by the Disneyland Dream Suite. In October 2009 the gallery re-opened, but now it resides on Main Street, U.S.A..In the early 1960s as construction of New Orleans Square was proceeding, Walt Disney decided he needed a bigger entertaining facility for various VIPs that came to the park. He already had an apartment above the Fire Station on Main Street, U.S.A., but it was too small to host elaborate events. Walt decided to place the suite in New Orleans Square, set back from the hustle and bustle of the park.Disney brought in set designer Dorothea Redmond, famous for creating the sets in Gone with the Wind, to help him with the apartment layout. To furnish and decorate the area, he left his wife Lilly and Walt Disney Studio set decorator Emile Kuri to collaborate as they had on other projects (Club 33, the Firehouse Apartment, etc.). The project was christened The Royal Suite, inspired by its location off New Orleans Square's Royal Street. After Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, many projects at Walt Disney Productions were put on hold or abandoned. At the request of his brother Roy, who felt the family would not enjoy The Royal Suite with Walt gone, the project was quietly set aside. It was fairly close to completion at the time of Disney's death, including infrastructure and plumbing. From July 11, 1987, to August 7, 2007, the space housed the Disney Gallery. On October 1, 2007 the Walt Disney Company announced that the recently closed Disney Gallery would be remodeled and turned into the Disneyland Dream Suite. The remodeled suite would be the realization of Walt's dream to have a larger private apartment built at Disneyland, and would be made available to randomly selected guests of the park. The space underwent a whirlwind remodeling, with Disney Imagineers closely following the original design drawings from Dorothea Redmond. Located above the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, the Disneyland Dream Suite included a living room, open-air patio, two bedrooms and two bathrooms.“Our plan has been to use the renderings that Walt worked on with Dorothea Redmond and to replicate those as exactly as we can,” said Walt Disney Imagineering Art Director Kim Irvine. “Her illustrations were very specific, with a color and style for each room.“But to make it special for the guests, we want it to be more than just a beautiful suite. We want it to be filled with things that might have inspired Walt as he dreamed of Disneyland."One of the most distinctive characteristics of the Dream Suite was the private balcony, which overlooked the Rivers of America. From here guests had an unobstructed view of the nighttime spectacular Fantasmic! In addition to that night’s lodging in the Disneyland Dream Suite, each selected 2008 Disney Dreams Giveaway winner of the Disneyland Dream Suite would also be celebrated as the honorary grand marshal in that day’s Disneyland parade. The Suite was given out as a prize through various promotions. The original concept for Holidayland was that of a turn-of-the-century town park, with picnic areas, horseshoe pits, a baseball diamond, and perhaps an open field where a circus could come to perform. This original version would be located where the Matterhorn sits today. As Disneyland came together in 1954, it became apparent that there wasn't enough space within the park for Holidayland to become a reality, and the land (now sometimes called "Recreationland") became a picnic and recreation area, with minor seasonal holiday decorations. In November 1955, the Mickey Mouse Club Circus came to Disneyland, in the Fantasyland section of the park. This event only lasted until January 1956, and was themed to the celebration of Christmas, with promotional material referring to the circus as "Holidayland," including a November 25, 1955 Los Angeles Times article declaring "Holidayland was a roaring success. The kids consumed great amounts of popcorn, and Walt Disney enjoyed himself as much as anybody. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Husband and wife Richard T. Curry and Christine Curry of Pickerington are U.S. Army veterans who served in Iraq and Kuwait during the War on Terror. Richard Curry grew up in Cincinnati and attended Youngstown State University, New York University and the American Military University. He earned his master’s degree in military history in December from AMU. He enlisted in 1975 and retired as a colonel. Christine Curry grew up in Logan and Sciotoville, attended Shawnee State University and joined the Army National Guard in 1982. She retired as a sergeant first class. Richard Curry’s first tour to Iraq began in 2004 as commander of a unit in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. “It was a completeArmy Cavalry Regiment – tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles and Strykers,” he said. It also had artillery units, he said. “We were tasked originally to help out with the elections, and then we were told we were going to go into a major offensive,” he said. That offensive was at Tal Afar, launched in September 2005. Curry was to lead his unit and act as a forward-operating-base commander. Forward operating bases are used to support strategic goals and tactical objectives. The offensive was launched, he said, “because what had been happening at the Syrian border was basically a mess.” The plan was to “secure the border and secure Tal Afar, which is the small town near the border area and was being used as a major logistics-type base for the insurgents.” His unit “had a lot of activity in the area, meaning we had a lot of mortars against our base, a lot of rockets against our base. There were a lot of insurgents in the area.” When Tal Afar was secure, Curry received a visit from Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the Multi-National Force-Iraq commander. Curry said he thought the four-star general might share some “pearls of wisdom,” but Casey instead said he was placing Curry in charge of a former airfield his unit had occupied. “I want that airfield put back into operation,” he recalled Casey telling him. When Curry informed Casey that as a tank commander, he had no experience in running an airfield, Casey replied, “Well, now you’re an airfield commander also. You call my staff. They’ll help you get what you need to put it back in operation.” Before that job ended, Curry was commanding 5,000 military personnel, he said. At first, when pilots radioed that they were ready to land, Curry said he answered, “ ‘Well, you see the airfield. ... Godspeed.’ That’s about all I could say to them because I had no idea what I was doing.” Later, an aviation team arrived to provide air-traffic control, he said. Christine Curry’s first tour was with a unit handling casualty operations and statistics. The unit compiled detailed reports, including “an extensive description of the injuries” that was used when the U.S. Department of Defense notified the next of kin. Compiling that information, she said, was “a job not just anybody could do.” “What was hard for most people was ... the description of each and every injury (and) killed in action,” she said. “Very detailed. ... In our case, the more detailed the better because the family’s going to want to know, even though it sounds gory.” Not all families wanted details, she said, “but those that do, they want to know everything.” “It was rough because ... you try to make sense of rollovers or IEDs, improvised explosive devices, that hit a convoy,” Curry said. “There’s no rhyme or reason how the injuries happen or anything like that. And you go to bed at night and think, ‘Oh my God, that was my kid’s age. He was my kid’s age; she was my kid’s age. ... The realization like, ‘This is real. This isn’t a book I’m reading. This is really happening.” Members of the unit were required to take counseling, she said, “whether we thought we needed it or not.” “We were good about not taking a lot of it personal, but it does play on you after a while,” she said. Members of her unit turned to exercise as an outlet, Curry said, “and they all were powerlifting by the time we left.” Six months into her tour, she received a new assignment – scanning reports for trends, “how many snipers, how many IEDs, how many small-arms fire, how many rocket-propelled (grenades).” That’s when she noticed an alarming trend. Suicide bombers were luring U.S. troops into buildings with sniper fire. When Americans entered a building to silence the sniper, the insurgent would detonate the bomb “and take out a whole squad instead of one person. ... So I immediately went down and talked to my deputy chief of staff (saying), ‘Hey, we’ve got a serious trend here.’ ” Army intelligence officers didn’t notice the trend, she said, because they weren’t seeing casualty data. That happened, in part, she said, because of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 privacy laws. Within 48 hours of her report, she said, the Army in the entire theater of operations modified its response to such sniper attacks. “It was kind of like an afterthought by the time I got home that I actually probably saved lives there,” she said. At one point in Richard Curry’s Army career, he served with his daughter. Christine Curry served with her father and, later, Richard’s daughter. Then in their final tour, they served together. “At the time, I was a brigade commander. She was working in the admin shop,” Richard Curry said. Prior to that tour, they were at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, and began talking a lot, he said. They both remembered Richard’s reputation as a “cowboy.” “It was interesting at times,” Christine Curry said. Richard Curry said veterans learned to adapt to their environment in the military, and that’s good advice for returning to civilian life. “Respect what you accomplished,” he said. “But that’s not what you should be all about. ... Get involved in other things.” “Don’t be afraid to seek counseling,” Christine Curry said, “no matter how minute you think your problems are. ... Find a group where you have that commonality and talk about it ... with your fellow soldiers.” The couple are active in Whitehall Memorial VFW Post 8794, where Christine is commander and Richard is past commander. Richard Curry’s decorations include the Combat Action Badge, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (two), Meritorious Service Medal (three oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with silver oak leaf cluster), Army Achievement Medal (with two oak-leaf clusters) and Iraq Campaign Medal (with two combat campaign stars). He is a retired director of security and emergency services at Defense Supply Center Columbus. Christine Curry’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), Army Achievement Medal (with two oak leaf clusters) and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. She is a communication coordinator for Defense Finance and Accounting Services in Columbus. The past couple months have been amazing with so many great Veterans agreeing to be featured and doing interviews. Sometimes, when I get a stash of interviews recorded, I forget how good some of them are until I go back to edit them. That's the case with my interview with General George Casey (ret). We recorded the interview at Student Veterans of America's #NatCon2018 during a busy day of interviews with Student Veteran of the Year finalist interviews, and I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to the interview a couple weeks later. General George W. Casey, Jr. is one of the most accomplished soldiers in U.S. history and an authority on strategic leadership. As the 36th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from April 2007 to 2011, General Casey led what is arguably the world’s largest and most complex organization — 1.1 million people strong, with a $200+ billion annual budget — during one of the most extraordinary periods in military and global political history. He is widely credited with restoring balance to the war-weary U.S. Army, modernizing and leading the transformation necessary to defend our nation in the 21st Century, and ensuring the current force deployed in the war on terror was the best this country has ever fielded. Currently serving as a Distinguished Senior Lecturer of Leadership at the Samuel Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University and lecturing internationally on leadership to the leaders of national and multinational corporations (e.g., Coca-Cola, Caterpillar, Amazon, TDAmeritrade and General Electric) and at other business schools (e.g., Columbia, Yale and the Universities of Denver and North Carolina). He is also Chairman of USO Board of Governors and serving on Georgetown Board of Directors. George tells us about his 41 years in the Army, why he joined, his close friends in the service and his continued service to Veterans and students.

Fantasyland is a sort of love/hate thing for many people. It contains some of the most wonderful rides, and yet it is so packed all of the time.  Taren digs deep into this polarizing section of Disneyland, and brings us ... The History of Fantasyland In the land of princes and princesses, flying elephants and boat-guzzling whales, of mad tea parties and endless songs, we leave the familiar world that we know and understand and move into the wondrous mind of Walt Disney. Many have said that Fantasyland was Walt's favorite land. In his initial concept for Disneyland, Fantasyland was at the center of everything.  As is generally the case, Walt's attention to detail is part of what makes this land so special--from the fact that each horse on the King Arthur's Carousel is jumping (Walt didn't want stationary horses) to making sure that the Casey Jr. Train looked identical to the one in Dumbo (even when this caused extensive logistical problems), to plating the spires of the castle with 22 karat gold (much to Roy Disney's chagrin). The Fantasyland of 1955 was very different than what we see today--although, most would argue that what we see today is much closer to Walt's original vision. It didn't always have the beautiful European "Storybook" facades that we know and love, these only came after a major renovation in 1983, when the "New Fantasyland" opened, which also brought us a better layout of the land, new rides, new restaurants and important upgrades to the existing rides.      Come with us on a journey from the past to the future in the History of Fantasyland! And make sure to stay tuned for our Fact of the Show--you'll love keeping this one in your back pocket to impress your friends!
