Welcome back to Analyze Scripts, where a psychiatrist and a therapist analyze what Hollywood gets right and wrong about mental health. Today, we are super excited to analyze one of our new favorite shows “Beef” created by Korean-American director Lee Sung Jin for Netflix. This series swept the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards with individual awards going to Ali Wong and Steven Yeun for portraying the main characters Amy and Danny, and the show being chosen for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. We get the hype! In this episode, we explore road rage and the difference between anger and rage. We also explore why humans feel angry and which areas of the brain get activated and deactivated when we feel this emotion. We also discuss how to appropriately manage these intense feelings using anger management, grounding, mindfulness, and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) principles. We hope you learn how to manage your anger better than the characters on this show, and that you enjoy this episode!https://www.instagram.com/analyzescriptspodcast/ https://www.tiktok.com/@analyzescriptspodcasthttps://www.analyzescripts.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@AnalyzeScripts Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to Lunch Therapy! We start this brand new season with Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Netflix's hit show BEEF. I worked with Lee several years ago on the ABC sitcom The Real O'Neals and since then he's gone on to write for Dave, Tuca and Bertie, and now his breakout, runaway hit starring Steve Yeun and Ali Wong. In today's session, we talk all about Lee's name change (when I knew him, he was Sonny Lee), the road rage incident (and bathroom incident) that inspired the show, and the terrible eating habits that he has when he's on set. We also cover his favorite Korean dishes, why Ali Wong's picture isn't on the wall at Park's BBQ, the best Japanese restaurant in L.A., how you know when to stop rewriting, and the time that he ate a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts in the writer's room and raced to a Best Buy to use the bathroom. Beef premiered on Netflix this month to rave reviews and quickly became the top watched series on Netflix in the U.S. In Canada, it took the No. 2 spot.Beef is a dark comedy series created by Lee Sung Jin. It follows two L.A. strangers, courageously played by Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, who get into a road rage incident — and end up in an escalating feud. The show is a beautiful meditation on life and survival and highlights universal issues of alienation and loneliness as well as class and race and gender. Critics have praised Beef for its performances and also for its revolutionary representation of Asian Americans. But over the weekend, a Twitter storm erupted after a podcast episode featuring supporting actor David Choe resurfaced. In the 2014 podcast, Choe vividly relays a sexual assault story where he is the perpetrator. Choe has apologized since and has also said the story was made up.This week on Don't Call Me Resilient, we explore the advances Beef has made in television. As the controversy continues to swirl, we also explore the limits of those advancements and ask whether the brilliance of Beef will be overshadowed by Choe's controversial history.Joining us to discuss this is Michelle Cho, an assistant professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto, specializing in Korean film, media and popular culture. Also with us is Bianca Mabute-Louie, a PhD student in Sociology at Rice University in Houston with a background in Asian American studies and racial justice work.[Beef showcases] “a really compelling portrayal of Asian American women's experience of female rage and the nuances of living in a world, in a society that expects a certain type of docility and a placid surface” — Michelle Cho, assistant professor of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto

The Strange Harbors Podcast

Road rage comes to Netflix in Lee Sung Jin's dark comedy, Beef. Starring Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, Young Mazino, Joseph Lee, and David Choe, the ten-episode series revolves around a down-on-his-luck contractor and a wealthy entrepreneur whose traffic run-in escalates into dangerous obsession. We talk about the series' mostly Asian cast, the pitfalls of representation, and the harmful Netflix binge model.

[Spoiler Alert] Grace discusses the show Beef (Netflix, 2023) created by Lee Sung Jin starring Steve Yeun and Ali Wong. While Beef is a Netflix production made in Hollywood, Grace sees a lot of Korean influence on the show like how Danny tries to kill himself using hibachi grills similar to the way Koreans use charcoal briquettes, having a billionaire character, and the jang-nam (eldest Korean son) pressure that Danny puts on himself to buy his parents a house. What makes the show arguably a Korean American drama are the church scenes and an exploration of K-rage exhibited by characters like Danny, Issac (David Choe) and Edwin (Justin H. Min). Grace analyzes Ali Wong's former marriage to Justin Hakuta whose great uncle was world-renowned Korean artist Paik Nam-june, and how this backdrop creates Amy Lau's character. The best thing about Beef is that while it explores the lives of Asian American characters, it doesn't insist on being an Asian American show. It deals with compelling characters and their human complexities. Follow @KDramaSchool on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok. Visit https://www.kdramaschool.com/ to learn more.

“I was an economics major and I thought I was going to get into investment banking,” says Lee Sung Jin (who also goes by Sonny Lee). “Didn't feel right at any point of my entire college career,” jokes the screenwriter. “I was really flailing about, unemployed, temping a lot, and I had gotten into the NBC page program.” If you've ever seen 30 Rock, this is somewhat the same job Kenneth the Page had, giving studio tours for $10 an hour. “That was my first glimpse into the entertainment industry. I loved TV and movies, as we all do, and I thought, why not give it a go?” Lee taught himself screenwriting through reading books and blogs. “I started staying in most weekends. When you find your passion, you can't help but keep working at it. So, in my early twenties, I discovered this might be a career path.” Today, Lee has credits on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Outsourced, 2 Broke Girls, Silicon Valley, and Dave. Most recently, he's the Creator of the Netflix dramedy series, Beef, that stars Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, Maria Bello, Andrew Santino, and David Chow. The simple plot reads, “Two people let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their every thought and action.” Want more?
