JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, invite a revered British horror scholar to share the mic, and talk about a beloved era of horror cinema. MONSTER PARTY presents a special "across the pond" episode that we've playfully titled... LET'S SCARE KIM NEWMAN TO DEATH: HIDDEN HORROR GEMS OF THE 70S!!! If you're a monster kid and are not aware of KIM NEWMAN, this is the moment when your life gets back on track. Mr. Newman is an award-winning journalist, film critic, and author, whose works include the immensely popular ANNO DRACULA series of novels, the essential horror cinema book, NIGHTMARE MOVIES, and the upcoming yuletide novella, A CHRISTMAS GHOST STORY!  Kim has also worked as a film critic for EMPIRE, ROTTEN TOMATOES, VENUE, VIDEO WATCHDOG, and SIGHT AND SOUND, and has provided a slew of MONSTER PARTY endorsed commentaries for many of their favorite films.  Of course, we're barely scratching the surface of Kim Newman's accomplishments, so for more information about this MONSTER PARTY hero, check out THE KIM NEWMAN WEBSITE at johnnyalucard.com! Oh, and in case you're wondering how MONSTER PARTY came up with the provocative title for this episode, one of Kim's favorite horror films is the classic 70s vampire film, LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH. So what better way to honor our guest than with a Jessi-centric play on words? Aren't we clever? WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS HEARTFELT EXAMINATION OF HORROR FILMS FROM WHAT IS ARGUABLY THE GOLDEN AGE OF CINEMA. AND TO JESSICA'S LOVED ONES, WE OFFER OUR CONDOLENCES.

One of the things that was realized at some point after the creation of Famous Monsters magazine, was that there was this horror fandom, or fan base, of all these horror fans around the country, in a variety of ages, that realized that they were not alone in their love of horror. While there were more magazines to follow, at some point there was the birth of the fanzine, which was the low budget version of a professional magazine, but one that was created by nothing but passion. In the '90s, with home computers and then desktop publishing became something you had in your own home, more and more of these fanzines started. Each one wrote about the films they wanted to cover, whether it was mainstream, though mainly they were talking about more on the obscure side, but it was always through the excitement of hoping to get others to seek those films out. In this episode, we welcome Dave Kosanke, creator and genius behind the fanzine Liquid Cheese, which Dave created, wrote, and self-published for 25 years. Dave's knowledge of the horror genre and fanzines is a topic that he is more than well-versed in, which it shows within the first few minutes of chatting with him. Fanzines and magazines mentioned in this episode: Asian Trash Cinema, Blackest Heart, Creepy, Deep Red, Delirium, Demonique, Draculina, Dreadful Pleasures, Eerie, Echo Magazine, European Trash Cinema, Famous Monsters, Fangoria, Flesh & Blood, Gick!, Gore Creatures, Gore Gazette, Is It Uncut?, Late Night Snacks, Liquid Cheese, Little Shoppe of Horrors, Midnight Magazine, Midnight Marquee, Monster, Monster Bash, Monster, International, Monsterscene, Monsters from the Vault, Monster Times, Naked Screaming Terror, Psychotronic Video, Scary Monsters, Scream, Shock Video, Slime Time, Splatter Times, T.O.S.S., Trashfiend, We Belong Dead, Video Watchdog, Ultra Violent

Welcome to the Beehive!  It's the 100th and final episode ever of the Rock Under Fire podcast.  It's all about hot takes as Mike Derrico is joined by Marisa Baldassaro, Heather Drain and Michael Lee Nirenberg in over two hours of too many topics to list.  But we'll try...let's see...there's random takes on Chuck Berry, the early days of the Internet, Joy Division, Brian Eno, the Gun Club, Def Leppard, Michael Monroe, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, the Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Marisa's Vince Neil imitation, about a dozen different takes on Kiss, including the question..."is Kiss misogynistic," and a whole lot more.  It must have been in the stars, but we saved the most insane episode by far...for last.  Thanks to all our supporters over the years.  We had a small audience but we had a blast.  Thanks for listening. Peace. luv, rock and roll...   Rock Under Fire host, Mike Derrico is a freelance writer, pop cultural historian, and author of the books, AUTUMN AND EVERYTHING AFTER: The Murder of John Lennon, Evolution of Bruce Springsteen & the Birth of the Reagan Era (2020), THE LOCKER NOTES, a novel (2021), and the forthcoming ...AND THE CATHEDRAL FELL TO THE GROUND: The Lonesome Death of Rock and Roll (November 2023). Michael Lee Nirenberg, in his fourth time on the podcast, is a writer and director whose most celebrated recent works have been his 2014 documentary Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story, and his 2020 book Earth A.D. the Poisoning of the American Landscape and the Communities That Fought Back.   Heather Drain, in her second Rock Under Fire guest spot, is a writer who veers between the worlds of esoterica film, wild music, heart-born words, and prose that is dark, rich, quirky, and often undefinable. In the nonfiction realm, her work has appeared on the print and digital pages of Dangerous Minds, Diabolique, Video Watchdog, Art Decades, just to name a few. Her prose has appeared in both the Women in Horror Annual, as well as the 2020 anthology, The Blind Dead Ride Out of Hell: A Literary Tribute to the Amando de Ossorio. Marisa Baldassaro is a writer and fellow hater currently putting the finishing touches on her latest project, a Dory Previn zine, discussed earlier this season on Rock Under Fire (Ep. 79).  Marisa has also co-hosted several episodes of Rock Under Fire during Season 3.     Check out Heather's Patreon... https://www.patreon.com/mondoheather Follow Heather Drain on Twitter... https://twitter.com/mondoheather Follow Marisa Baldassaro on Twitter Marisa Baldassaro (@Nerdspringbreak) / Twitter Follow Mike Nirenberg on Twitter Michael Lee Nirenberg (@MLNirenberg) / Twitter Derrico Untitled https://derricountitled.com/  RUF Archives https://rockunderfire.libsyn.com/ Follow Mike on Twitter  https://twitter.com/Mike__Derrico Copyright free music provided by Lovers Squared by Letter Box 1973 by Bruno E Giorgio Di Campo for FreeSound Music

We unleash the dead on this episode! We discuss the cult classic Raiders Of The Living Dead, a 1986 horror movie by (sort of) Samuel M. Sherman. Three different versions of this movie exist, and we talk about every single one of 'em on this episode! It's a horror history course, and it's almost time for class! On today’s episode, the second part of an interview with Video Watchdog founder and publisher Tim Lucas, we talk about his book Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark, a 800,000 word volume beloved by filmmakers from Martin Scorsese and Guillermo del Toro, which Quentin Tarantino called “the best book on films ever written.” Also: the art of crafting “jam-ful, wall-to-wall” film commentaries, how the supplements of physical media Blu-rays are taking the place of film magazines, his screenplay The Man with the Kaleidoscope Eyes about the creation of Roger Corman’s The Trip for Joe Dante to direct, his subsequent adaptation of that screenplay into a novel, and his “disenchantment” with comics after Jack Kirby’s departure from Marvel alongside the current state of comic book films. Though Watchdog ceased physical publication in 2017, Tim still runs the Video Watchblog, alongside occasional posts for the New Beverly Blog, while also recording over 100 DVD and Blu-ray commentaries. Tim Lucas had been writing various columns reviewing home video releases — one of the first critics to actually review the presentation elements of the release along with the content — before he started Video Watchdog, a magazine that Quentin Tarantino once called “the only reliable film magazine in the world.” On today’s episode, part one of a longer interview, we talk writing reviews in his high school newspaper of X-rated films, an impactful first viewing of A Clockwork Orange that hit him with both on- and off-screen mortality, his long run writing at Cinefantastique magazine, creating Video Watchdog, and his uncredited drafts that laid foundation for David Cronenberg’s film adaptation of William S. Burrough’s Naked Lunch. Though Watchdog ceased physical publication in 2017, Tim still runs the Video Watchblog, alongside occasional posts for the New Beverly Blog, while also recording over 100 DVD and Blu-ray commentaries. Mark Maddox returns to the show to talk about one of the more overlooked of the Universal horror films of the 1930's - MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1932). This movie's lack of attention may be because it doesn't have one of the classic monster characters as a draw or, possibly, because it is one of the darkest, nastiest sixty-one minutes the studio ever released! Luckily, I don't think it will remain as underseen in the future as it has just gotten a tricked out new Blu-Ray release which gives the film the best visual presentation it's ever received on home video. The picture is so sharp that you can almost see the evil thoughts as they flicker in Bela Lugosi's eyes! We start the episode with a brief discussion of some of some of the projects Mark has coming out soon including some fun information about the genesis of his cover art for the upcoming Blu-Ray of Hammer's EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN. We then move into a rather scattered discussion of MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, jumping from one topic to another as we explore the qualities that make it a unique part of the decade's horror output. Lugosi's masterful acting is examined along with his bizarre uni-brow. That is one strange look! The not-so hidden strain of bestiality embedded in the story is touched on as well as the fears of a Darwinian view of the world that the script uses to terrify its audience. We disagree about the inserted chimp scenes but both of us find some generally held ideas about this movie to be a bit silly. We bring up the legendary first edit of the film along with Tim Lucas' Video Watchdog article (in issue #111) in which he proposed a way to re-edit the existing film to approximate the director's original version. It's a shame there wasn't an attempt to include such a variation for the new Blu. If you have any thoughts about this film or any other that we've discussed on the show, write to us at thebloodypit@gmail.com or over on the Facebook page. Mark will return in a few weeks to talk about another movie so you could even ask him some questions directly, if you wish. Thanks for listening!

This month we bring you a special episode of the show. If you've listened to many of our shows you will have heard us mention the magazine Video Watchdog in reference to something or some movie. Both Troy and I have been readers of the 'Perfectionist's Guide to Fantastic Video' for decades now and each issue brings new delights. The depth and breadth of the coverage in the pages of this digest sized joy is incredible. Several years ago we met duo behind the magazine and became great friends with them resulting in many fun evenings of movie (and music) discussion that often saw the sun rise before we called things to a halt. Call them publishers, editors, writers, film historians or just great folks Tim and Donna Lucas are two of the nicest people in the world and we're proud to bring you a chance to sit in on a conversation with each of them. First up, Donna takes the opportunity to explain the details of Video Watchdog's move to the digital world. Luckily this does not mean the end of the print version of VW (Thank the stars!) but the bells and whistles added to the online versions of each issue are astonishing. And proving just how nice a lady she is, Donna let's you in on an amazing deal - By using coupon code PODCAST at the Video Watchdog online store checkout you receive 50% off the Digital Archive (176 issues) until December 31, 2016. That's right! For the rest of this year you can grab the VW Digital Archive for half off the (already low) digital price! And did I mention that each new issue is online to read free for the first two months after it's published for FREE! Amazing. So go check out the latest issue inline and see what's going on! The current issue has tons of reviews and a huge article on Carmilla and the various screen adaptations of that classic female vampire tale. Longtime listeners will know that back in 2011 I got Tim Lucas to sit down for a couple of chats about Naschy's films resulting in some great discussion. I still think his defense of several aspects of BEAST AND THE MAGIC SWORD are eye opening and it is just such differing, knowledgeable opinions that I want when talking about genre film. Of course, Tim is one of the top genre film writers working today and his recent awards for his Mario Bava commentary tracks show that his skills translate from page to audio very well. Here we spend some time discussing several Jess Franco films and a few of their variations. Movies we touch on include THE OBSCENE MIRROR and it's non-porn Spanish language version THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR, FURY IN THE TROPICS, THE DIABOLICAL DOCTOR Z, THE EROTIC RITES OF FRANKENSTEIN and Franco's two Fu Manchu films. I think that in my excitement I may have babbled too much but just listen in for the pearls of insight and wisdom Tim brings to the table and it will all even out! I hope!
